construction techniques Magda—a contemporary glamping chair—is constructed only using her structural elements. There are no fastening materials or tools needed, just your hands and gravity! Designed for use in small spaces or glamping, she can be carried weighing in at around 12lbs.

The materials used all interact in a way that show their function. Using a slotting method to attach the plywood pieces together make her structural stability visible. The insertion of the closet rod increases the stability, as well as the suspension of the transparent vinyl and attached luggage straps. All elements also contribute to her flat-packing.

material choices I used plywood I had left over from a previous project, it was pre-sanded and had a generally sophisticated look and color that was fitting for this project. The wooden dowel I purchased at a local hardware store, that matched the color of the wood and was extremely lightweight. The vinyl I chose was originally 20 gauge, which proved too heavy for its original use on the chair. I purchased a lower gauge vinyl (10 gauge) which was much thinner and easier to work with. The orange straps are from my suitcase. Originally added for a pop of color, they also serve as a support to the seat and a packaging element.

designed for small spaces & glamping The Magda can be quickly assembled sans tools on-site. Its practicality and compact storing method makes it ideal for tiny living or glamping. Equipped with a carrying handle, you can tote Magda to your glampsite with ease.

inspiration

my process For my piece I want to explore ‘Context’ and design some sort of compacting furniture. I’m not sure what direction I want to go towards as far as if it could be useful for tiny houses or camping/backpacking. The sketches I explored were incorporating woodworking (for its frame) and inflatable elements.
