2016-one for the books

Even though we are just into the New Year, 2016 has proven to be a year for the books. For our family, January started off with a funfilled trip to Disney World! All of us were so excited to escape the cold for a few days and soak in some Florida sun. To our surprise, Florida was having a bit of cooler temps, but I’ll take 63 over below 3 any day!! As our trip was coming to an end, my middle daughter Alex started showing symptoms that most kids on vacation have – she was tired, cranky, and exhausted from all the walking. What I thought were sheer “”vacation tired” symptoms proved different when we arrived to the airport to head home. All she wanted to do was sit – she slept for the two hours while we waited to board. And then I felt her head – she was burning up! I immediately thought, “Mother of the Year!” Here I thought she was just tired from all the fun but she actually had some sort of bug. And then come to think of it, I didn’t feel so well myself. The next day, Alex, started to feel a bit better but my youngest, Dani, and myself were not. We had high fevers, coughs, and I went back and forth between having the chills and sweating. As the day progressed, I realized that I wasn’t immune to getting sick and this mom was going to need a sick day – or two or three. Since it was a Sunday, I was able to go to bed while my husband held down the fort. I slept off and on the entire day and thought for sure I’d feel better in the morning. That wasn’t the case. Every single bone in my body was sore, I had a high fever, and I felt like I sprained a rib from all the non-stop coughing. I immediately knew this wasn’t a cold – it was the flu – like Influenza A, the thing I had no time to protect myself against! Now I was paying the ultimate price by literally not being able to move. I was disoriented, dizzy, and completely worthless. And the worst part – so was my baby Dani, and for her things just got work. She got so dehydrated we had to take her to the ER so she could get IV fluids. Fortunately the IV fluids, medicine and sleep did the trick and that night my baby girl was on the way to recovery. Now everyone is happy and healthy and my hope is that it stays this way for the remainder of 2016 for my family and yours. Take Care,

I remembering crying. The surgeon said it was time for surgery. I needed a valve replacement. At age 39 I was no longer just the nurse. I was the heart patient.” The day prior to surgery, Spence recalls family and friends calling to offer their prayers and support. She remembers kissing her kids good night as always but snuggled a little longer that night. “I knew I did not want my children there at the hospital during my time there. This was the first time I would be away from them for this long, but I had no doubt my surgery would be a success and I would see them soon,” Spence says. “My mother had told me that when I was 7 and diagnosed with this heart condition God made her a promise. He promised he would take care of me. I knew I was in good hands.” And she was in good hands. When Spence awoke from surgery, her mother, father and husband were sitting by her side – and they had the best news she had ever received. “The doctor was able

A woman dies of a heart attack every 8 minutes. These are alarming statistics. So what do we need to know? For starters, our lifestyle plays a huge role in developing heart disease - smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity and stress puts us at a further risk for having a heart attack. Other risk factors include: family history, being post-menopausal, varicose veins, diabetes and having a low functioning thyroid. How can we prevent heart disease? We need to stay on top of our health! Routine checkups to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are just a few ways to do this. We also need to get out and exercise. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week will improve your heart health and help reduce your risk of heart disease. You can even break it up into quick and manageable 10-minute sessions, three times a day. without it,” she says. “Now that my heart is fully functioning I have energy. I don’t need to stop what I am doing because my bra feels too tight causing me shortness of breath. Now I know it was not my bra at all, it was a result of a leaking valve.” Spence says the energy she has makes the day to day a lot easier. In fact, she often has to remind herself that she had surgery three months ago because she honestly forgets that it happened. “It seems so surreal but then one look at my scars and I am reminded,” she says. “But honestly, I am proud of those scars. I believe I approached surgery with a positive attitude and desire to move on with my life. God only gives you what you can handle.” Spence is determined to get back to normal, better than normal in fact. She says this heart “thing” will not hold her back. “I am a heart patient but it’s not a crutch, it’s a blessing.” Spence will continue to follow up with her cardiologist every 6 months. She will always need to have echocardiogram to assess the functioning of her heart valves. She may someday need to have it fixed again or possibly replaced. But until that day, she will live life to the fullest, loving her family and enjoying time with friends. “I enjoy being a nurse. I know now what it is like to be on that other side. And I know what it is like to have great nurses and doctors caring for you,” she says. “I hope people feel compassion from me when I am their nurse.” And what advice does Spence have for women who question their health? It’s simple - listen to your body and listen to your doctors. “You only get one chance on this earth, make it great. Life is a blessing.” - mtm
A healthy diet can also prevent heart disease. Pay attention to portion size. Incorporate vegetables and fruits in your diet. Vegetables and fruits are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables and fruits contain substances found in plants that may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Whole grains are good sources of fiber and can help regulate blood pressure and heart health. Another diet change is to limit unhealthy fats, trans-fat and saturated fat. My recommendation is to eat organic grassfed meat, increase the amount of salmon in our diet and AVOID fast foods, fried foods, artificial and processed food. Learn to manage your stress, yoga, exercise, cognitive behavioral exercises (deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation) and perhaps counseling. A decline in the natural hormone estrogen may be a factor in heart disease increase among post-menopausal women. Estrogen may have a positive effect on the vascular system. Lastly, if indicated by your health care provider, adding a daily baby aspirin after age 60 can help prevent cardiovascular disease. In September 2011, 19-year-old Amanda Bach of Portage was shot to death by her on again, off again boyfriend Dustin McCowan (then 18). On the night of September 15, Bach drove her car to McCowan’s Union Township home. What led to an altercation between the two is fuzzy; ultimately Bach was forced to railroad tracks near McCowan’s home where she was shot in the throat, the scene was staged to look like she had been assaulted and her car was abandoned at a nearby gas station. When she didn’t come home by her 1 a.m. curfew her parents called the police. As the horrific details unfolded, what became clear to officials and her family was that Bach and McCowan’s relationship had been tumultuous and abusive for some time. Nevertheless, given the facts, no one could have predicted that September evening. Two years later McCowan was sentenced to 60 years in prison. In the wake of her death, several Porter County community organizations gathered together to shed light on the issue of dating violence and seek hope in the midst of tragedy. The Amanda Forum, composed of both an adult task force and a youth task force, formed in 2013 and is hosted by The Caring Place in Valparaiso. Their mission: to raise awareness of youth dating violence through discussion, education and mentoring with a focus on developing the protective factors of pro-social relationship skills and resilience for both male and female teens.

Smile! February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA) to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. What is the secret to a healthy smile? Taking good care of your teeth, and as parents and grandparents, it’s our job to educate our children and help them develop good health habits at an early. Below are ways kids can keep their teeth healthy.
Kids can take charge of their teeth by taking these steps:
1. Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast and before bedtime. 2. Brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones. 3. Spend at least 2 or 3 minutes each time you brush. (Let the kids pick their favorite song to listen to so it will help pass the time.) 4. Use only toothbrushes with soft bristles. 5. Ask your dentist if an antibacterial mouth rinse is right for you. 6. Learn how to floss your teeth. 7. Brush your tongue to help keep your breath fresh.

By now, most of our readers have heard about the tragic passing of Elizabeth Scott of Porter, Ind. Scott was struck by an out of control vehicle while she was running on County Road 1200 North in Jackson Township, a road she’s ran on many times before. Scott was an avid runner – participating in everything from 5 and 10K’s to half marathons. Friends say she was in training for a marathon and was hoping to qualify for Boston. Scott loved running so much - she was even the coach of Discovery Charter School’s Cross Country team. Stacy Witt, 2nd grade teacher at Henry S Evans Elementary in Lake Station, Ind. met Scott about five years ago when Scott was an aide at her school. “Liz was one of the most kind and helpful people I’ve ever met. She was always there for not only our students, but our staff as well,” Witt said. “We could always count on her to help put a smile on our faces. She will be greatly missed.”

Book Reviews of Jojo Moyes’
“Me Before You”
February, the time to express how much you love your significant other, to celebrate feelings of: warmth, remembrance and joy. After reading “Me Before You”, by Jojo Moyes, I definitely held on a little tighter to my husband, because the emotions it brought out of me were immense. Moyes has written such a beautiful love story between a man and a woman, I flew threw the pages of this amazing story within a few days. The writing skills of Moyes gives you a full picture of each individual character and the surroundings they live in - I felt totally engrossed in the story and was emotionally invested until the end. Louisa Clark is a young woman who lives a simple life, never traveling far from home; she is still living with her parents, and has had the same job for the past six years. Unexpectedly, Louisa finds herself without a job and her family depends on her salary to survive. A job then becomes available to her - caregiver for a young man from a distinguished social background, Will Traynor. Louisa doesn’t know what to expect when she enters the annex she will be working at, and Will definitely doesn’t make it easy for her. Will has lived a huge life, filled with adventures, travel and a prosperous job. After an unfortunate accident, Will is now confined to a wheel chair and needs
twenty-four hour care. As soon as Louisa meets Will, he is acting up, making her job extremely difficult. He is grumpy, opinionated and nasty to Louisa, but she needs the job and gives it right back to Will, not letting him get away with anything. Eventually a common respect forms and matures into more. Louisa later finds out Will has some drastic plans that involve his future and she makes it her mission to change his mind. “Me Before You”, is a heart wrenchingly beautiful story, between two people who would have never met under normal circumstances. I do have to warn you it is a tear jerker but the story is so captivating it’s worth the tissue consumption. - mtm
