What is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. Facts About Breast Cancer In The US • One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. • Each year it is estimated that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year. • On average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes. • Over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today. A Global Burden According to the World Health Organization, in Merrillville. The event sold out six weeks before the event and Peters wasn’t surprised. “We have over 800 people come to our tea – it’s amazing,” she said. “And when I get up to the podium, I always ask the survivors that are with us to stand. It’s always an unreal feeling seeing all those women and knowing exactly how they feel.” And while Peters has thought about retiring and stepping down from Pink Ribbon Society, she knows in her heart she can’t leave this amazing organization she created. “There are days when I think I should stepdown and then I talk to someone who’s so grateful for the help they received and I realize I can’t leave this organization. It’s SO rewarding.” Pink Ribbon Society is located at 11011 Allendale Court in Crown Point. For more information, call 219-663-4990 or visit them on the web at pinkribbonsociety.org. - mtm

breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year and affecting countries at all levels of modernization. Good News About Breast Cancer Trends In recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatmentoptions.

According to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), young athletes who specialize in just one sport face an increased risk of overuse injuries from their highly focused training. Plus they’re more likely to experience stress and burnout from the singular focus and the pressure of performing. In the report published in the September 2016 Pediatrics, lead author Joel S. to ask before your child goes to a friend’s house for a playdate. This mother started out by mentioning she was always so focused on asking who would be in the home, what the children would be watching, playing and eating that it never occurred to her to ask about firearms. Unfortunately, her daughter was accidentally shot and killed by a gun that kids found in her friend’s home. EYE OPENING are the only two words that come to mind. Here I am confronted by a “worry milestone” that seems almost never ending. I am always so cautious about where my children go and what they are doing, but I had never considered asking a fellow

Did you know? Americans own almost 200 million guns. However, a gun in the home can be very dangerous, especially for children. Every year, nearly 1,500 children die from guns and many more are seriously injured. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes the best way to prevent gun-related injuries to children is to remove guns from the home. However, if you choose to keep a gun in the house, it is important that it is unloaded and locked, and the ammunition is stored and locked in a separate location. Gun-Related Injury Facts • More American homes have guns than dogs. • Most of the victims of unintentional shootings are boys. They are usually shot by a friend or relative, especially a brother. • Half of all unintentional shooting deaths among children occur at home, and almost half occur in the home of a friend or relative. Myths About Guns • Most parents with guns think their children do not know where they hide them. However, 8 in 10 first graders know where their parents’ guns are hidden. • Many parents think their children are not capable of firing a gun. However, children as young as 3 years are strong enough to pull the trigger of most American guns. • Parents believe their children know the difference between real guns and toy guns, but few children younger than 8 years can tell the difference. • Parents often believe their child would not touch a gun because “he knows better.” However, studies have found that most children will handle a gun if they find one, even if they have been taught not to. • Some parents consider non-powder guns, like BB, pellet, and paintball guns, to be toys. These guns, which can fire at the speed of traditional guns, lead to nearly 22,000 injuries each year, especially eye injuries. Gun Safety Tips • The best way to keep your children safe from guns is to remove all guns from the home. • If a gun is in the house, always keep it unloaded and locked. It should be out of reach and sight of children. • Keep ammunition and guns locked in separate locations, not together. • Safety devices, including gun locks, lock boxes and gun safes, should be used for every gun in the house. • Storage keys and lock combinations should be hidden from children. • Before visiting friends and relatives, ask if they have guns in their homes. If so, make sure they keep their guns unloaded and locked as well. • Never leave children unsupervised in a home with a gun.

Pie Crusts Pie crust was a very tricky thing for me. I’ve tried several recipes and this one I finally seem to be able to work with. For the hand pies I decreased the flour by ½ cup. I like it a bit more first when trying to maneuver it into a 9” pie plate versus working with a smaller 3” circle. I’m also a big fan of using my food processor to mix the crust. A store-bought double crust refrigerated pie dough would also work.

Ingredients

Directions

3 cups all-purpose flour (I used 2 ½ cups for the hand pies)

1 cup unsalted butter, very cold and cut into cubes (2 sticks)

Place flour sugar and salt into food processor and pulse a couple

2 Tbsp granulated sugar

½ cup ice cold water

times to mix. Add the cubed cold butter and pulse a few more water (keeping in mind you might not need all of it) until the dough becomes crumbly and mixes together. Split dough into 2 pieces and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or up to 3 days (may freeze for up to 3 months).

Pie Filling Ingredients

Directions

1 Tbsp butter

Peel and chop the apples. Melt the butter into large skillet. Stir in the apples.

2 large apples (3-4 if using smaller apples)

Sprinkle with salt and sugar (white and brown). Cook, stirring occasionally,

2 tsp lemon juice squeezed over chopped apples

and if the water is needed. Allow to cook additional 1-2 minutes. Cool the filling slightly before assembling the pies. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out chilled dough onto a well-floured surface and cut into desired shapes (I have a large 3” square and circle cookie cutter). Place about 1 Tbsp filling onto a piece of the dough and top with second piece of dough. Pinch the edges of the

dough to seal. Repeat with remaining dough. Brush with the egg/milk mixture.

1 egg and 2 tsp milk (to brush over pies)

Cut small vent into top of each pie. You can either sprinkle a coarse sugar over top or I had delicious juice remaining in the filling pan that had thickened and I spooned it over the pies. Transfer to parchment covered cookies sheets and bake for about 25-30 minutes. Cool and serve warm. Store leftovers (if there are any) in refrigerator.

Vanilla Ice Cream I have never felt the need for an ice cream maker. It would just be one more appliance to store and honestly, I probably shouldn’t really make a lot of ice cream because I would just eat it! This is a simple ice cream with a simple method. You could easily change the extract flavoring to your preference or needs. It’s delicious!

Ingredients 2 cups heavy cream (whipping cream) 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 tsp vanilla extract or scrape a vanilla bean

Directions Place bowl with cream in bowl of ice and mix with hand mixer on med-high speed until stiff peaks form (this will take a few minutes). On low speed or with a rubber spatula, mix in sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Pour into a loaf pan or freezer-safe container. Freeze until firm, about 6 hours.

Beef and Noodle Casserole We aren’t huge casserole people at my house, but lately I find myself making more and more because they are time-savers. Most can be made ahead and refrigerated for the day or frozen for a month to use as needed.

Ingredients

Directions

1- 12 oz bag egg noodles

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 casserole pan. Cook noodles accord-

ing to package for the least amount of time. You don’t want mush after it bakes. Drain and set aside. Brown ground beef, onion and garlic. Drain grease, if any, and set aside. Mix the two soups, milk, Worcestershire sauce and pepper. Add noodles and beef mixture to soup mixture and stir to coat. Pour into prepared pan and sprinkle with cheese. Bake for about 25 minutes or until hot and bubbly. If refrigerating, bake 30-45 minutes covered with foil. Remove foil and bake additional 10 minutes. Note: A simple substitute to replace canned mushroom, chicken and celery soup. Melt 2 Tbsp butter and mix with 3 Tbsp flour. Slowly whisk ½ cup chicken broth into flour mixture. Then add ½ milk and whisk to combine. Cook a few minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper. This makes the equivalent of a 10.75 ounce can of condensed soup.

non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

ask about our advertising specials

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children? Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is al-

ways adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle. Some chiropractors have additional degrees and certificates specializing in Pediatrics to care for the newborn and pregnant mom. How is a chiropractic adjustment performed? Chiropractic adjustments are performed as a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands--or an instrument--to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient’s pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment. Why’s there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted? The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved. What research shows: Today there is a lot of research to show just how effective Chiropractic Care is for a multitude of issues. To find out more simply go to acatoday.org/Patients/Why-Choose-Chiropractic/What-ResearchShows. If you have never been to a chiropractor before make October the month to try it out.
