FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL DR. DAVID PERKINSON Thanks to the generosity of our community through the Episcopal Collegiate Annual Fund, our biennial fundraising events—the Wild Game Dinner and the Parents’ Auxiliary Auction—and other giving opportunities like our Run Wild Campaign, we are able to provide an educational experience for our students that they couldn’t receive anywhere else. These are just a few examples of the many ways your support impacts both our day-to-day activities and overall mission. Thank you! David
ATHLETIC SPEAKER SERIES AND ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE Our record-breaking 2019 Wild Game Dinner raised over $100,000 for our Fine Arts and Athletics programs, enabling us to fund two years of programming to enhance the experience of our athletes and artists. These kinds of unique experiences make a significant difference in the ways our students see themselves and their potential and would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. This year, through our new Athletic Speaker Series, we will host two events featuring world-class athletes on campus—the first of whom will be announced to our community on Oct. 16. Your generosity has also made our new Artist-in-Residence program a reality across all divisions and disciplines in the arts. While we have often enjoyed bringing artists to campus over the years, this is the first time we have secured funding to make that possible on a consistent basis. Not only will the artists-in-residence share their art with us through performance, presentations, or display, they will also spend time with our students, providing workshops to help them hone their craft. 6 | Episcopal Collegiate School

YOUR SUPPORT IN ACTION FACULTY DEVELOPMENT The Annual Fund and the Parents’ Auxiliary Auction allow us to provide a wide array of professional growth opportunities for faculty each year, including national and regional conferences and workshops designed to keep them tuned in to the best practices in their fields. Your donations also allow us to support faculty pursuing advanced coursework, additional degrees, and specialized certifications. Because of the fundraising efforts of our Parents’ Auxiliary as well as the Annual Fund, we’ve been able to bring nationallyacclaimed educators to campus to conduct summer workshops for our faculty in their own classrooms. These workshops have led to campus-wide innovation using Google Suite, a deepened understanding of the power projectbased learning has on our students, enhanced teaching of reading through multi-sensory methods, and explored approaches for making student-thinking more visible.
A focus on faculty development facilitates enriched experiences for our students. Three years ago, we sent a group of teachers to the Student Teaching and Learning Conference in St. Louis. One of our teachers was so energized and interested by a presentation by Ron Ritchhart, author of Making Thinking Visible, that she read his book and shared her impressions with her division head. When the time came for summer presenters, we were able to invite and secure Ron Ritchhart for a three-day faculty workshop. Over 20 faculty members attended the workshop on thinking routines— structures that help students organize their thoughts on an issue, idea, or problem— and now that approach is a staple strategy used in classes across our campus, today. This is just one example of the ways your support to both the Annual Fund and Parents’ Auxiliary Auction allows us to provide our faculty with unique opportunities that translate into more creative teaching and deepen student learning.

DESIGN CURRICULUM Have you ever seen a three-year old programming a robot? As hard as it is to believe, our students in PK3, working with our Discovery Lab teacher, begin to learn the basics of programming through games and tools designed just for them. Discovery Lab is our hands-on, science and technology program for our youngest students. By integrating science and technology from PK3 to second grade, the foundation is laid for our students to understand the world where they will use technology to solve problems. Our children learn that they can make a difference in the world through work like the Monarch Butterfly project which raises and releases these important pollinators. Students in third through fifth grades continue the experiences with Design Lab and Science courses where the sophistication of their tools increases, as do the problems they attempt to solve and the concepts they come to understand. However, the handson, interactive approach does not change. From competition robots to hydroponic lettuce, our students’ interest in science, engineering, design, and coding are cultivated and expanded. The progression does not end there. Our Middle and Upper School students continue to hone their skills in our Exploratory Design classes where they create solutions to realworld problems. Those might include hightech solutions like 3D printing, low-tech ones made of cardboard, or soft-tech solutions like apps for phones and tablets. The PK3-12 grade design curriculum is capped off by courses in 3D modeling, coding, and design in the Upper School. This kind of robust and comprehensive curriculum is not common for PK3-12 schools, but your generous support makes it not only possible, but familiar for our students.

THE EPISCOPAL DIFFERENCE INVESTING IN OUR CLASSROOMS In the last three years, we have made substantial investments in two curricular areas: CKLA—the elementary language arts program—and the Singapore Math curriculum that will be implemented through seventh grade. Implementing these changes effectively took investments of time, human capital, and financial resources that are simply not possible in every school. Before adopting these programs, we sent faculty to receive training and observe schools where these curricula were being used. We piloted Singapore Math materials in the classroom and brought a consultant to campus multiple times over the last year as teachers prepared to implement the curriculum. Our consultant worked with our teachers, parents, administrators, and math specialists during her visits. To complement their work with students in the CKLA program, this past summer, 18 of our Lower School faculty participated in a fiveday, multi-sensory reading workshop. The thorough plan for training teachers and the success we have already witnessed would not have been possible without a significant investment. The ability to see the curriculum in action, to be trained by experts in the program, and to be supported through the initial years of implementation are not experiences typically afforded to teachers as they adopt and implement new curricula. However, they are essential if we are to maximize the benefit for our students. These investments would not have been possible at Episcopal without your support of the Episcopal Collegiate Annual Fund.

2018-19 SUMMARY OF GIVING Tuition, which covers 71 percent of our operating budget, plays the largest role in our ability to serve our mission. Philanthropic support plays a crucial role in augmenting tuition revenue to help fund exceptional opportunities and experiences for Episcopal Collegiate students.

2018-19 ANNUAL FUND - $614,112 RAISED Due to the generous support of our community, the 2018-19 Annual Fund was our largest to date. With more than 500 donations, we raised more than $614,000. This includes 100% participation from both our faculty and the Board of Trustees. Every dollar raised impacted each student, faculty member, program, and facility that makes Episcopal Collegiate the exciting place it is. FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT, MATT RADTKE The 2018-19 school year was yet another tremendous year for Episcopal Collegiate. I am grateful and proud to be a part of a community that continually demonstrates our collective commitment to our students and our school. I am fortunate to have the distinct privilege of interacting with the students and teachers everyday who directly benefit from your gifts of time, talent, and resources. I am literally writing this right before I head to Chapel, my favorite moment of the day, where we will gather as a community in celebration, in fellowship, and in support of each other. I am pleased to share with you that through the outpouring of support from parents, trustees, faculty, alumni, past parents, grandparents and friends of the School, the Episcopal Collegiate Annual Fund raised more than $614,000. The Annual Fund is an essential source of support for the school which ensures all students have the quality learning experience and sense of community we have come to know as Episcopal Collegiate School. Highlights of the 2018-19 Episcopal Collegiate Annual Fund, chaired by Katie and Clay Hunter: • 100% Faculty & Staff participation totaling over $42,000. • 100% participation by the Board of Trustees. • Record parent participation at 62%. For comparison, the Southern Association of Independent Schools is 59%. Additionally, I would like to extend a big Wildcat thank you to the Wild Game Dinner Co-Chairs Mary and Ryan Allen and Kathryn and Scott Irby. Their leadership and vision was instrumental in raising over $100,000, dedicated specifically for the arts and athletic programs! Finally, what stands out to me is the spirit in which people support Episcopal. It’s not merely transactional. Instead, you sense the magic of an Episcopal education and the impact it has on the lives of our students and the world—for that I say thank you! RUN WILD CAMPAIGN In August, we celebrated the official launch of our Run Wild Campaign, a $3.5 million fundraising initiative to enhance our athletic facilities. Our team enjoyed visiting with parents and students about the project and its impact on our campus community. The facility enhancements will include a first-class track and field complex, significant improvements to our stadium, and upgraded locker rooms in the Championship Gym for both boys and girls. The track and synthetic turf field will be available to every member of our student body through participation in physical education classes and athletic teams, our emerging strength and conditioning program, running clubs, and individual fitness efforts. Together we can create something that will be transformational for our students, our programs, and our future.
