Discovery Day Camp: STEAM2 Students entering grades Pre-K4 through 5th

Discovery Day Camp is fun and friends from beginning to end! This all-day camp is packed full of enriching and fun learning experiences. Students will be engaged in activities that focus on careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Activities are based on daily themes and incorporate science, math, reading, writing, art, cooking, and physical activity. Each Friday, students will conduct a field study at a location around town (Ferncliff Camp, IMAX Theater, Museum of Discovery, Spirited Art, Millennium Bowl) to observe and speak to professionals working in STEAM careers, and to receive hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, art, and math professions. A schedule of activities is provided on our school’s homepage (www.episcopalcollegiate.com) via the Summer Daze link. The camp consists of five one-week sessions. Session I: Science will be held May 31 – June 3; Session II: Technology will be held June 6 – June 10; Session III: Engineering will be held June 13 – June 17; Session IV: Art will be held June 20 – June 24; Session V: Math will be held from June 27 – July 1. Camp activities will be held from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The cost of each session is as follows (includes the cost of field trips and DDC t-shirt): • Session I: Science - $200 • Session II: Technology - $225 • Session III: Engineering - $225 • Session IV: Art - $225 • Session V: Math - $225 Pre-K students will need to bring a cover sheet and a blanket for rest time (mats will be provided), and a change of clothes (shirt, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes are recommended). Please label all articles with your child’s name so that we can ensure their return. Students must bring a sack lunch and drink each day they attend camp; a morning and afternoon snack will be provided. There will be a $1.00 per minute charge for any child not picked up by 6:00 p.m. Session fees will be prorated only for students attending another class on campus; no other exceptions for partial attendance will be allowed.

Health

Lauren-Blair Marshall June 6 – July 1 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. $350 Upper School Library

Upper School Health is an in-depth look at the total wellbeing of one’s mind, body, and spirit. Students will learn the many aspects of health, including self-esteem, decision making, goals, fitness, nutrition, social skills, dealing with loss and grief, managing stress, mental illnesses and other diseases, awareness and effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, demonstration of CPR and rescue breathing skills, and the risks associated with sexual behaviors, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy. Teaching methods will include PowerPoint, lecture, discussion, videos, group and individual projects, vocabulary, worksheets, and tests. This is a blended course that counts for graduation credit in health. The majority of the coursework will be done online with Haiku. However, we will meet face-to-face two days each week for 3 hours each day. A class schedule will be provided upon registration.

Speech

Upper School Speech examines various types of speech communication including interpersonal, intrapersonal, and public speaking. The course emphasizes vocal production, poise, self-confidence, and organizing one’s thoughts into a cohesive speech. Teaching materials include PowerPoint, lecture, discussion, group and individual projects, vocabulary, worksheets, and tests.

Non-Credit Courses

Non-credit courses are open to new and returning Episcopal Collegiate students, as well as non-Episcopal Collegiate students.

This isn’t your typical math class! We will embark on several math projects that will offer students an opportunity to practice skills learned in 5th grade, as well as help them prepare for 6th grade math.


Athletics Football Camp

Students entering grades 1st through 9th. Instructor: Coach Richie Marsh Schedule: June 6 – June 10 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Location: Football Field

In this camp, participants will learn basic and advanced fundamentals of youth football. The camp focuses on playing football the Wildcat way through attention to detail, and playing smart, safe, and fun. Participants will be grouped by age, and will receive position-specific instruction, but will also learn the basics of all positions, including kicking and punting. All equipment will be provided.

Volleyball Camp

Girls entering grades 6th through 12th. Instructor: Molly McNulty Schedule: June 13 – June 17 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Location: Erwin Hall Performance Center and Gymnasium (LS) This high-energy camp is perfect for female athletes looking to learn the fundamentals of volleyball. Participants will build and develop basic skills including serving, hitting, passing, and setting; and will have the opportunity to use these skills in game situations. The drills used in this camp are designed to prepare athletes for competitive play, and to help them strive in a team atmosphere.

Cheer Camp

Students entering Kindergarten through 5th. Instructor: Molly Thicksten Schedule: August 1 – August 5 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $150 Location: Erwin Hall Performance Center and Gymnasium During this camp, participants will learn all aspects of cheerleading such as jumps, stunts, tumbling, motions, cheers, and dance. This camp is a great way to build selfesteem and team-building skills. Throughout the week, participants will work on an awesome group routine and perform for family and friends on the last day of camp.

This camp will focus on individual skills improvement through our morning skill stations and afternoon 3-on-3 leagues. Each participant will also play in one 5-on-5 game and participate in our Living by Numbers contests each day. This camp provides a perfect opportunity to prepare for your school, recreational, or AAU season.

All NIKE® basketball camps maintain a player-to-coach ratio of 8:1 and are staffed by high school and collegiate coaches and players. Each camp is limited to the first 96 participants that register. Lunch will not be provided, but a concession stand will be available with pizza, snacks, and drinks. Each player will receive a NIKE® t-shirt, yearbook, camp certificate, and a hand-written evaluation from the coaching staff. *Camp will end at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17; Friday, June 24; and Friday, July 15. This two-week course offers an introduction to digital photography through the use of a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera with a focus on functions of the camera, Adobe Photoshop and photography composition. During the first week, students will develop their technical and aesthetic skills; the second week will be geared towards learning the alternative photography process and cyanotypes. The class will conclude with a photographic art show including a print from from each student. Each student must provide their own DSLR camera, SD card, and flash drive. In this two-week class, students will write a story, sketch it, extrude it with clay sculpting, and build it in 3Ds Max animation software. Students will spend the second week working CGI in the engineering building at UALR, and will be able to walk inside their creations in CAVE (Computer Assisted Virtual Environment). This class is an incredible experience that offers great career potential.

Alternative Process Photography Students entering grades 4th through 12th.

Students will use all types of cameras to learn the basics of composition, Adobe Photoshop, editing, and the process of cyanotypes. Students will work with photograms and digital negatives to create different types of cyanotypes. The class will conclude with a photographic art show including a print from each student. Wee Little Arts: Adventures in Africa

Staffed by current varsity Wildcats and former college players, the Episcopal Collegiate Future Stars Baseball Camp focuses on developing skills and fundamentals for all players and positions. The camp will utilize the school’s brand new on-campus indoor batting facility. Drills include defensive work for all positions, pitching, catching, proper throwing/batting mechanics, and base-running. Camp includes end-ofcamp drill competitions and prizes.


Bugology

Minecraft Edu

Students entering grades 3rd through 6th Instructor: Christian Rogers July 11 – July 22 | 12:00 p.m. –1:30p.m. Schedule: $150 Cost: LS Computer Lab Location: MinecraftEdu is an educational platform developed by Carnegie Mellon, that uses the popular game to teach math, science, English, foreign language, and social studies. During this two-week session, students will select a topic of interest, submit building contracts, and develop an interactive world to teach their topic to their teachers and peers.

Sweet Science

In this interactive class, young scientists will learn about matter and the changes that take place with matter while doing kid-friendly science experiments and projects with candy and fruit. Our confectionary concoctions will encourage the student’s natural curiosity while helping to lay a good foundation for early science learning.

Have you ever wished that you could be a fashion designer? Then this is the class is for you! Bring an old pair of jeans (or jean skirt) and we will create an entire outfit – from shoes to jewels and everything in between. On Friday, we will have a fashion show to show off our creations. You could be the next big designer!


FIRST LEGO® League

Students aged 9 to 14 years Instructor: Christian Rogers Schedule: July 11 – July 22 | 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Cost: $150 Location: LS Computer Lab In this class, students will learn about the FIRST program, build with LEGOs®, and program a NXT robotic brick. Machine design and function is a primary goal of this course where students will work with levers, tension, gear ratio, torque and pulleys, and will apply the laws of physics and mathematics to LEGO®competitions.

Students will also learn embroidery techniques to embellish their creations.

Students will select from several projects – round, square, market, etc. – and will have the opportunity to create at least three items.

Students will start the week learning about the evolution of skyscrapers – from classic to modern structures – and the methods architects and engineers use to ensure structures strong enough to withstand earthquakes, high winds, and severe changes in temperature. As the week progresses, students will draft a “blueprint” of their design, and use it to construct their own high-rise building with Art Straws and corrugated plastic panels. This class is a young architect’s dream!

During the week, students will build ramps and roadways and can bring their remote control vehicles to navigate our custom-built course. Students will bring shirts, pants, bags, hats, shoes, gloves, bottles, notebooks, candles, and even canvas and we will provide the instruction and art supplies to craft some unique creations.

Students entering grades 4th through 7th Instructor: Kristyn Watts Schedule: July 18 – July 22 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $150 Location: LS203 This class is an exploratory into the science of bath and beauty products. Through chemistry experiments, students will make their own soap, lip gloss, bath bombs, and bath crayons, and will also learn how to add their own unique styles and scents.

Spirited Art: Monograms Students entering grades 4th through 6th Instructor: Jenny Ross, Spirited Art Schedule: July 18 – July 22 | 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $150 Location: LS 212

Students will use a variety of high-quality art materials to design and craft signature art pieces using their monogram. This is an open studio-style class, in which participants can select from several projects, and will receive specific instruction on completing their projects. This class is open to students of all skill levels.


Beginning Summer Violin Class

Pet Care Camp

Students entering grades Kindergarten through 2nd Instructor: David Kendrick Schedule: July 25 – July 29 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Location: LS144 In this class, students will learn about the responsibility of providing proper care for their pet dog, cat, rabbit, bird, or fish. Activities will focus on how to feed, provide water, exercises, bathing, enclosure cleaning techniques, and petting. We will also make nutritious pet treats and snacks to sell and give the proceeds to Humane Society of Pulaski County.

Each day we will work on individual projects like constructing creatures, cars, dinosaurs, and more! We will also spend a little time each day working on a big group project. This class is designed to encourage independence, to nurture an interest in cooking, develop skills, and have fun! Come hungry! Kids take home extra tastes, recipes, and a cooking utensil.

Students may bring small household items such as picture frames, plates, candlesticks, jars, lamps, shades, glass bottles, cookie sheets, and stools, and we will provide the instruction and art materials to turn your something old into something new! We will help you flip your find into a keepsake you’ll cherish for many years to come.


Fairy Tale Science

The activities in this class will encourage the student’s natural curiosity about scientific events from classic stories such as Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, and Hansel and Gretel, while helping to lay a good foundation for early science learning through real science experiments.

Big Kids Cook!

This course uses the best online course available so student will be expected to practice in class and at home. To receive Typing Master Certification, students must finish this course having completed all 13 Touch Typing Course Lessons and be able to demonstrate they can type without looking at their hands.

Sweet Tees

Students entering grades 1st through 3rd Instructor: Tonya Thomas Schedule: July 25 – July 29 | 9:00 a –12:00p $150 Cost: LS146 Location: In this fun interactive class, students will design and cut stencils, then use freezer paper to transfer their images into t-shirts to make their very own unique creative designs. White t- shirts and art supplies will be provided; students may bring colored shirts or tanks if they wish.

Ready Jet Go!

Students entering grades Kindergarten through 2nd Instructor: Tonya Thomas Schedule: July 25 – July 29 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Location: LS146 Blast off and come explore the galaxy! The activities in this class provide an introduction to space, earth science, and technology, presented in an entertaining and engaging way that will inspire a life-long interest in outer space. During the week, our explorers will have the opportunity to make jetpacks, moon sand, and constellation viewers. On the last day of class, we will launch a rocket! Students entering grades Kindergarten through 2nd Instructor: David Kendrick August 1 – August 5 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Schedule: $150 Cost: LS146 Location: Food is the one thing that connects people globally. Although we may not speak the same language throughout the world, we all eat. In this class, students will learn about other cultures throughout the world by preparing, cooking, and enjoying kid-friendly international recipes. Students will also learn interesting facts about the country, world food facts, and learn a phrase or two in the native language. Bon appetit!

Students entering grades 1st through 3rd Instructor: TBA Schedule: July 25 – July 29 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Location: LS144 This is not your typical brush-to-canvas art class! Young artists will have the opportunity to create works of art on canvas using a variety of creative materials and techniques such as tossing paint-filled eggs, painting with toy cars, and using solar-melted crayons. At the end of the week, we will host an art show for family and friends.

Students entering grades Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 Instructor: Lorie Clay Schedule: August 1 – August 5 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Cost: $125 Location: LS 122/Playground Join Mrs. Clay for mornings of wet and watery play! We will explore water and bubble sciences, play with water balloons, build and race sailboats, go on “fishing” trips, build a waterway, and lots more! Students are encouraged to wear swimwear and sunscreen under their clothes, and should bring dry clothes to change into after class.

Sew Accessorize Camp Summer Science: From Kites to Campsites Students entering grades 1st through 3rd Instructor: Sophie Hussey, Sew Creative Studio Schedule: August 1 – August 5 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $175 Location: LS146 Accessorize your closet while learning to sew! Make handy accessory projects including a book bag, sunglass case, and flower headband. Learn to use a sewing machine, and explore your creative side by embellishing your projects with cute buttons, ribbon, and lace. This camp is designed for beginners, but novice sewers are welcome too! Bring your own machine or use one of ours.

That’s a Novel Idea!

Students entering grades 3rd through 6th Instructor: David Kendrick Schedule: August 1 – August 5 | 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $125 Braunfisch – Stella Boyle Smith Library (LS) Location: This is the perfect class for budding novelist and creative thinkers! Students will create a book or short novel based on stories they have read or their own creative writings. Writing projects will focus on creativity, concept development, individuality, and paragraph construction. At the end of the week, students will take home a “published” copy of their book.

Students entering grades 1st through 3rd Instructor: Tonya Thomas Schedule: August 1 – August 5 | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Cost: $150 Location: LS144 If you love summer, science, and art, this is the perfect class for you. In this hands-on and interactive class, we will learn some of the scientific reasons why summer is so cool! During the week, students will have the opportunity to make and use solar ovens, design and fly a kite, study the life cycle of a bee, and much more!

Registration can be completed using our online registration form at www.episcopalcollegiate.org. Complete one registration form per participant.

Payment

Episcopal Collegiate students: The student’s FACTS account will be billed after the conclusion of the class for which he/she is registered. For students not enrolled at Episcopal Collegiate: After completion of the online registration form, send a check payment (payable to Episcopal Collegiate School) to the following address: Episcopal Collegiate School c/o Summer Daze 1701 Cantrell Road Little Rock AR 72201 A receipt will be e-mailed to you once your payment has been processed; this receipt serves as your registration confirmation. Registrations will not be accepted if not accompanied by a check payment or FACTS account authorization.

Class Enrollment

Enrollment is processed in the order by which registration forms and payments are received. Please note that many classes have a maximum capacity and may fill quickly. Registration forms will be processed up until the start of each class as long as the class has not met its maximum capacity.

Class Withdrawals

Students can cancel and/or change classes until May 27, 2016. Requests to withdraw a student from a class will not be honored after this time, with the exception of unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical or family emergency. Payments will not be refunded and the student’s FACTS account will be billed whether or not they attend the class.

Part-time Attendance

Class fees will not be prorated to accommodate partial attendance for any class.

Cancellations

Classes with insufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation with a full refund. If payment has been made by check, refund checks will be mailed to the address listed on the registration form.

Discontinuances

Participants are expected to adhere to the policies of Episcopal Collegiate School. We reserve the right to dismiss from the program, without refund, any student whose behavior becomes inappropriate, disruptive, or is inconsistent with school policies.

Before-care/After-care

Before-care is available at the Lower School from 7:00 a.m. until the start of the participant’s morning class. After-care is available at the Lower School until 6:00 p.m. Before-care and After-care are offered at no additional charge. However, participants must be registered for at least a morning or afternoon class to attend Before-care or After-care.


Lunches

Lunch is not provided. Students who are registered for a morning and afternoon class at the Lower School may participate in a supervised lunch period at no additional charge. Students must bring a sack lunch and drink.

Teacher Substitution

Episcopal Collegiate School reserves the right to substitute teachers for any class, if a teacher is unable to teach his or her class as scheduled or for any reason deemed appropriate.
