INTRODUCTION ABOUT ME: Hi! My name is David Thrift. I reside in Southeast Alabama, and have been a resident of Alabama for most of my life. I have had hobbies throughout my entire life, and have been a collector of various trinkets for many years. I am happy to welcome you to my Hobbies & Collections photo journal ebook. I created this ebook for three main reasons. The 1st reason is that I wanted to have, and keep a photo journal about my hobbies and collections that I can maintain and publish for online use, but not published to my website. Meaning all of the content for this project will be restricted to this publication, and the publication will be available for viewing on my Issuu publisher's page, and may be available for download on my website or available for purchase in my Gumroad ebook store. This way I can have everything in one place to keep on my laptop and my tablet for offline viewing when I need or want to.

The 2nd reason is to be able to provide this publication to anyone who may be interested to see what my hobbies are, to see my collections, and to keep up with my creative adventures. Also maybe by keeping this journal, and sharing it with others, I may inspire someone to start a new hobby for themselves. The 3rd reason is that by keeping this journal, I hope that it will help to keep me motivated to spending more time staying involved in the activities that bring me joy in being creative and building cool collections to cherish. Because this is a continuously updated project, I'm going to make a new edition each month, but each update, and each edition is going to carry over content from each publishing. I know that may sound confusing. I'll break it down like this. The first edition was started in June 2022, and each update during that month went into the first edition. In the next month, I will create the 2nd edition, and continue adding content, and so on.

ART OF RANDOMNESS I love to create art with the act of randomness. This is the process of randomly choosing colors or objects, and putting them in place. The results of the random placement becomes the art. My favorite form of this art is by stringing beads, but I also like to play around with short pieces of yarn. More info to come.

MUSIC MIX TAPES AND OTHER MUSIC COLLECTIONS I've been making mix tapes since around the mid 80's when I acquired my first tape deck am/fm radio that had a recording function. Who didn't record music off the radio back then? I have also been a music collector since the mid 80's when cassette tapes were the mainstream source for buying albums. Then along came cd's, and then along came the digital streaming and buying era in the early 2000's, which still exists today. In this chapter, I will be listing my digital mp3 mix tapes that I have created for myself and my music collection from mp3 files that I've been collecting since the early 2000's. My music collection consists of many different genres of music.

ROCK HOUNDING I am setting Monday, June 20th, 2022 as the first official day that I started rock hounding. I had been collecting rocks prior to this date though. This date is significant however because it marks the date in my rock collecting and tumbling hobby that I brought home my biggest rock haul up to that date. In this chapter are photos of my rock hauls since Monday, June 20 th, 2022. I should note that my knowledge of rocks and the types they are is little to none as I'm starting this from the date listed above. I simply enjoy picking up rocks that look interesting and bringing them home to wait for their turn in a tumbler.

Haul 001 - This is a batch of rocks I collected in Salem, AL plus a few in my front yard on Monday, June 20th, 2022. I counted 110 rocks. These range in size from about golf ball size to smaller, and I think they all may be some form of quartz. This photo was taken on Monday, June 20th, 2022 @ 7:00 AM CST.

ROCK TUMBLING For around 6 months or so prior to getting my rock tumblers, I had been collecting some rocks, and knew that I wanted to get a rock tumbler. I just didn't know when. Then on Thursday, June 2 nd, 2022, I found a National Geographic brand, Hobby Edition rock tumbler on sale at Walmart for just $10 that was previously $58. Then on Tuesday, June 7th, 2022, just 5 days later, I found another one at the same store on sale at the same price. These were purchases I couldn't pass up, and HOBBIES & COLLECTIONS 001 – WWW.DDAVIDD.COM

I think I was extremely lucky to find them at the prices I got them for. If it hadn't been for that, who knows how long it would have been before I ever bought a rock tumbler, or actually ever bought one at all. I must note, that these are not the first rock tumblers I've owned. Many years ago, maybe around 2012 or so, I had another tumbler made by another brand. I don't remember the brand that it was, but it had a plastic barrel, and I didn't get along with the noise very well. Needless to say, I gave up rock tumbling at that point, and I don't even think I finished all of the stages of the rock tumbling process. These new tumblers I have now are much quieter since they have rubber barrels. So they are hardly a nuisance as far as noise is concerned. I just have something else running now to increase my power bill lol.

Batch 1, Stage 1 - On Monday, June 13th, 2022, my first batch stage 1 was finished. This photo shows what the rocks looked like after rinsing them off. From the first stage they have a smooth appearance and feel. I'm pretty sure my favorite rocks are the dalmation jasper ones (the ones that have spots like a dalmation). back in the tumbler for stage 2. Some of the bigger brown rocks had spots that didn't smooth out in the first stage very well. They might get held back for another stage 1 with the other batch of rocks that came with my tumblers. 2022-06-20-MON @ 7:54 PM CST – Just noting that stage 2 ran over by about 50 minutes before the tumbler shut off. I started thinking that my tumbler might have become defective since I've read comments online from others that have used the National Geographic Hobby Edition rock tumbler, but it finally stopped tumbling.

Batch 1, Stage 2 finished – On Monday, June 20th, 2022 @ around 7:54 PM CST, my tumbler stopped running for stage 2. This is the result so far. I've placed a quarter in the photo for size comparison. There were a few pieces of rock that dwindled down to tiny pieces that are not pictured. I kept those out so that they wouldn't get any smaller. These went back in the tumbler at 9:11 PM CST for stage 3 which is the prepolish stage. During stage 2, I ordered some Polly Plastics brand grit and ceramic tumbling media supplies. When I started stage 3 for this batch, I used the stage 3 pack of grit that came with my rock tumbler, but I also put a spoon full of the stage 3 grit that I got with the Polly Plastics supplies. I'm not sure if this is over-doing it, but this first batch is a complete expirement anyway since I'm starting out, so I will see HOBBIES & COLLECTIONS 001 – WWW.DDAVIDD.COM

what happens next week on June 27th, 2022... although it may actually be on Tuesday the 28th that I actually check this stage since I started them so late in the evening. I don't want to go out in my yard to wash these rocks in the dark. 2022-06-23-THU @ 12:10 PM CST – Today I'm having issues with the rock tumbler for this batch. This is the first rock tumbler I recently purchased. I've researched online and have discovered that Nat Geo had a run of bad units with a possible bad motherboard, or motor, or both. I've really had my nerves wracked a bit today trying to figure out what was causing the tumbler to stop. I thought it might be a bad belt, so I changed the belt. I thought the barrel might be too heavy, so I took some rocks and ceramic out. Nothing I did helped. The rock tumbler just continues to stop with flashing lights. I've read that Nat Geo has good customer service on this issue (that is if you can get in contact with them). I have checked their natgeotoys.com website, and I'm not finding any contact info there. I did see an email address someone posted on Reddit, so I'm going to give that a try to see what happens. I was already warned by others in a rock hounding group I follow and participate in on Facebook that these rock tumblers may fail. So I'm not surprised much. I feel fortunate however that I only paid $10 for both of my current rock tumblers. I will see what I can do about trying to get this one replaced that failed today, or I will shop around for a better one.

ROCK TUMBLING BATCH 002 On Tuesday, June 14th, 2022, I started my 2nd batch of rocks to tumble using the 2nd tumbler I purchased this month. Shown above are some of the rocks in the barrel for my 2nd batch. These rocks mostly came from West Point Lake I think. This is the first batch of rocks I've tumbled that I found and collected myself.
