Welcome to the inaugural edition of SASA Magazine. “SASA” is a Swahili word meaning “NOW” can also mean “Hi” or Hello (slang). My name is Frennie Seier- the Director for the publication. For some time now it has been my vision to create an urban magazine within the region as it was evidently lacking and much needed.

With this endeavor, the team and I aim to keep you abreast with the latest news, views and reviews on a diverse range of topics, be it John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Rihanna landing a historic Dior campaign, where to dine or what cars are currently turning heads - we will be right there to tell you about it. In this, our dummy issue SASA is opening the doors to show you a sleek, modern, cutting edge publication that will keep you entertained on each of its glossy informative pages. Enjoy the magazine and once again - Welcome to SASA - We keep it Urban!

LEBRITY

The Consummate Professional

Smartwater Idris Elba Campaign

Simply put, Idris Elba is a consummate professional. A brilliant actor, his filmography is impressive with appearances in block buster’s such as Pacific Rim, Thor and Mandela while his Television Credits are equally commendable. And yet, even with all this acclaim, he remains calm , virtually under the radar celebrity who doesn’t starve sporadically for the spot light like so many of his peers. For many years the rumor mill has been churning with whispers below baited breath of him potentially becoming the next James Bond (which would be brilliant by the way) but judging from his Twitter response it seems this won`t become a reality mainly due to the fact that he isn`t typically what Ian Fleming was aiming for when he created the character (i.e – White and Scottish) and two owing the fact that Edris himself does would not want to be typecast as the “black James Bond.” Having said all this since the fact that Daniel Craig still has one more Bond movie to do according to his contract (the Upcoming ‘Spectre’ movie set for November 2015 release) all this talk is pretty premature to say the least.

12

So now let`s move on to what WILL become reality and that is Idris Elba’s’ triumphant return as John Luther in the Television series ‘Luther’. This is indeed great news as it is one of my favorite British series... period. Set to be a two part continuation shot in and around London they have tentatively announced the shooting period to begin in March. It seems the suspense of finding out what happened to Luther since he was last seen on Southwark Bridge will now be answered. But the story doesn’t end there. Apparently the all clear has been given for a US adaptation of the series with the first port of call being a full length pilot. Idris has been confirmed in an Executive Producer capacity but it is not known as yet if he will actually act in it. What is known is that if the series is picked up he could be looking at a handsome six-figure payout per season. I really hope it does – as long as it doesn`t get too much of the “Hollywood glitz” treatment I see no reason why it shouldn’t do extremely well stateside.

Good Luck Idris - we are rooting for you.

MOVIE INSIDER

BLACKISH

Black-ish, created by Kenya Barris follows Dre Johnson (played by Anthony Anderson,) a successful African American dwelling in a predominantly white upper-middle class neighborhood. He begins to question the levels of his cultural assimilation when given a promotion that causes him to delve into elements of his culture that, until then, he never needed to. He decided to take it upon himself to bring more cultural awareness to him and his family by trying to re-connect with his true cultural heritage, albeit one hilarious step at a time. The show deals with such a heavy topic with a deft touch. The cast is excellent and full of seasoned professionals. The show is truly funny - well paced and subtly gets the messages it intends to get across in just the right doses. It doesn’t try and over-preach and from its’ initial poorly received pilot the episodes have gone from strength to strength. Well worth a watch. The first season is still ongoing.

THE FLASH

The flash - When I heard that this would be an actual series I wasn’t doing back flips or moonwalks to be honest (Its’ inception was actually triggered from an episode of the Arrow.) However, when I saw the pilot I was pleasantly surprised as the show was actually pretty good and this viewpoint grew as the episodes progressed. The overview of the flash (played by Grant Gustin) follows Barry Alan, a Crime Scene investigator who had witnessed his mothers’ death when he was 11 which saw his father wrongfully going to prison.

EMPIRE IZOMBIE

This is a brand spanking new show on the CW about an ambitious, career driven medical resident Liv Moore ( good grief, even the name has hidden meaning huh) who is attacked at a boat party and through the scratches becomes a Zombie.

This is a new semi-musical series called based on Lucious Lyon, a Hip Hop mogul who is the CEO of a musical empire, Empire Entertainment. He learns that he has an illness that will render him incapacitated in approximately 3 years, forcing him to ponder on which of his 3 sons will take over the business and continue his legacy. As you would expect all three sons have totally different strengths and weaknesses - one is an astute businessman but does not have any real “swag” to speak of, the other is an embarrassment while the other is talented but craves for the fame with no hint of business acumen.

Z - NATION

Unlike 99% of other Zombie series she does not become a mindless walking monstrosity but instead not only keeps her intellect but actually gets enhanced abilities. The downside is she craves human brains and in order to best achieve this she takes a huge career change and joins a Coroner’s Office.

Z Nation - I know that Zombie movies and Series are the “In thing” these days but I have to say Z-nation is a breath of fresh air in the genre for a few reasons. If I was to describe it is it like The Walking Dead on fast forward since its’ story line moves so quickly you really do need to watch every episode to get to grips with it. Set as usual in a Zombie apocalypse it features a band of survivors but this group has a purpose.

Her appearance also changes as does her demeanor and she calls off her engagement and becomes extremely distant. It is when she realizes that by consuming the deads’ brains she is also able to tap into their final memories that she begins to assist a newly appointed detective (Clive Babineaux) in his investigations that things get interesting.

One of the group has had an experimental drug injected into him and through this he actually managed to survive a zombie attack without turning into one. The groups’ aim is to escort him to Washington where the waiting scientists will attempt to formulate a cure from what is in his blood. A very simple storyline to be honest but what I like is how realistic the actual story is.

But I won`t reveal the full plot. Overall this show has a lot of promise and has a unique comic like way of transitioning through its key parts - as if broken into chapters. The cast is not star packed but they competently deliver the needed punch to make this refreshing series take its’ first steps. Now some episodes in and it is still holding its appeal while developing its plot in a well paced manner. We will be watching. 38

Luscious has his favorite and to add to the agonizing decision his exwife is released from prison hell bent on getting her dues for being an escape goat for their drug running past. Without her sacrifice the empire would possibly never have gone on to prosper as it did and so it seems only fitting in her eyes that she gets what she deserves . The series is dynamic and never dull with Timberland delivering a brilliant musical score as the musical producer for the series. The cast is extremely talented and solid in their performances making it no surprise that the fox series was soaring over the 14.5 million viewership mark at the time of its’ finale which aired recently.

Jump to present and a new ground breaking invention named the “Particle Accelerator” goes terribly wrong during testing and causes an unusual storm that strikes many people, including Barry, giving them special abilities. These are then labelled as “Meta-Humans.” Barry`s ability is Super Speed, and he uses this ability to protect the innocent while tracking down others like him who have decided to use their abilities for the wrong reasons – usually crime. He is also looking to find the person who killed his mother and exonerate his father in the process. Every week has a worthy adversary (i.e - Meta-Human) and now as the season draws to a close very deep plot twists are making the series take on a whole new direction. We watch with baited breath.

Unlike many other such series that give you a chance to follow a character week in week out and grow to like, hate or relate to them, Z-nation does not follow suit. They have no issues killing off what we think are main characters making it a lot more convincing. The skeleton core cast are pretty decent and interesting to watch. The first season wound up a short while ago so you have time to buy the DVD set and catch up before the new season starts in September 2015 (to be confirmed).

FLAVOR

An Invitation to do a Dubai brunch at the Pullman Hotel Deira City Centre One of the most sort after brunches that Dubai has to offer. Little Suzie restaurant welcomes the avid brunch goers to an enormous spread of delicious foods. Signature meals that can be found is our house favorites - the new spin on American Diner Classics done in Gourmet Style but for everyone else there is plenty more on offer. For every taste bud around, the scrumptious array will certainly provide a jolly cure to your cravings.

I wouldn’t say I have the worst diet but there is always room for improvement. Always opting for the quick and convenient foods, has left me feeling a bit sluggish. How did you find out about BooTea? : Whilst researching for an assignment on the ‘Boom of the Health and Wellness Sector’, I noticed the latest craze of teatoxing on many social media sites. So I decided to further my research to get my body beach-ready for the upcoming summer.

Let’s Do Tea Like Queens! A high tea experience with a picturesque view Why do we love it? : A high tea at the Boulevard Kitchen is one of Dubai’s royal favorites that captivates you with its uniqueness made extra special because of it’s signature contemporary Middle Eastern twist, where guests can experience the Arabic interpretation of the British teatime tradition.

After researching, I decided on BOOTEA, because I like the play on words (for the name of the product), the packaging, the language used on the website and most importantly, it is more convenient for me to purchase with my lifestyle so starting immediately looked very appealing. However, I did have some reservations about the laxative effect and whether or not I could give up eating meat for the next 14days. What do you think so far ? : Now, I am 10 days into my teatox and BOOTEA does everything it says on the box. The little chiffon bags are so pretty, the flavours and aromas of the teas are of excellent quality. Though, if you have never drunk green tea, the taste might not be as enjoyable for you. Not eating meat thus far has been ok and the laxative effect is not as persistent for me as I thought it would be. My energy levels are up and the quick-and-easyto-prepare meal plan has been a great inspiration at meal times. I have not checked the scales yet, which I am leaving till the end of my 14 days, as a little surprise, because my purpose for doing this teatox, was to feel better on the inside and weight loss will be an added bonus.

Experience the taste : Indulge in the Arab infused spread with Emirati desserts such as Karak Bomboloni and the Gahwa Bomboloni. For savories try the menu’s Middle Eastern take on the classic cucumber sandwich- the cucumber and halloumi pita sandwich.

Boulevard Kitchen Terrace Located at Manzil Downtown Dubai Afternoon tea is served on the terrace from 2-6 pm Price: AED 174 for 2 people For reservations: 04 888 3 444 or dine@vida-hotels.com
