About Dr.Mui Dr. Karson Mui graduated top of his class from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida and continues to pursue learning additional therapies to expand his capabilities. He is well versed in providing treatment for physical rehabilitation as well as pain management. Whiplash, brain injury and scoliosis are other areas of his expertise. Dr. Mui is also a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician who specializes in working with athletes and sports rehabilitation. Incidentally, Dr. Mui’s experience with sports is what led him to chiropractic medicine. His experience as a wrestler in high school caused lasting injuries including jammed fingers, a dislocated left elbow, and other injuries to his neck and lower back. After years of suffering from these issues, he decided to visit a chiropractor. After his first adjustment, Dr. Mui was pain free. Inspired by that moment, he decided that being a chiropractor and providing natural care and pain relief was his calling. With a background in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development, Dr. Mui integrates scientific theory into his practice and merges it with a philosophy of natural healing. He

enjoys explaining the science behind what he is doing for his patients. However, his favorite aspect of his job is being able to implement his knowledge by working with his hands to help those in need and truly make a difference in his patients’ lives. Dr. Mui’s most memorable experience in chiropractic was during a mission trip to Vietnam as a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida. He was part of a team that saw hundreds patients within a four day clinic rotation. One of his patients was a three year old girl who had an undiagnosed dislocated shoulder. By utilizing his training, and with some direction from his supervising clinician, Dr. Mui was able to set her shoulder. The child’s mother cried as her daughter was able to reach out to grab a lollipop from Dr. Mui’s hands. These experiences are what drives Dr. Mui to continue to develop his skills in natural care practices, provide the highest quality care to his patients, and work towards his personal mission of helping as many people in his lifetime as possible.

Sports Medicine with an emphasis on chiropractic

care is an important focus of Mui Chiropractic and Sports Medicine. Chiropractic care is the backbone to rehabilitation, after an injury, and during maintenance while training and the off-season. When undergoing a combination of muscularskeletal treatments, athletes have left our clinic being able to perform at a higher level than before they started their treatment program. As an avid sports enthusiast, one of Dr. Mui’s priorities is to help and support athletes, regardless of their sport, on improving and increasing their level of performance. He has volunteered in many sports events to care for the needs of the participating athletes.

What makes Dr. Mui different?

In addition, Dr. Mui is a member of numerous sports councils across the Northeast region, with the hopes of educating others on the techniques and benefits of chiropractic care. He is also the founder of New England Sports Medicine Council, which represents highly skilled sports physicians teaching fellow practitioners how to advance the standards of care for athletes. The council’s objective is to provide education to fellow sports medicine practitioners and to create a resource of clinicians to provide care at a variety of local sports venues. Dr. Mui recently volunteered at the Dew Actions Sports Tour, commonly known as the Dew Tours 2012, in Ocean City, Maryland. The event is a major, multi-sports action tour that has been held across the United States since its founding in 2005. Sports on the tour include BMX cycling, skateboarding, freestyle motocross and surfing. Dr. Mui served as a medical volunteer to attend to the country’s top athletes in the action sports community. Dr. Mui is also currently working towards his certification for the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.

Techniques F.A.K.T.R Functional & Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation was developed to help speed recovery from chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes and has also been shown to work extremely well on acute musculoskeletal and fascial conditions. Chronic pain results from dysfunction of the sensorimotor system, which is manifested in soft tissue and fascia. This new treatment approach to soft tissue dysfunction combines instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization with proprioceptive techniques to reduce pain and return function. In our clinical experience, combining manual treatment of soft tissue with proprioceptive exercises produces faster results than conventional treatment methods. This form of manual treatment is provided by chiropractors, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, medical doctors, occupational therapists, podiatrists and dentists. This technique was developed by Tom Hyde D.C., Greg Doerr D.C., and Vince DeBono D.C. in 2002.

Chiropractic Care Common knowledge associates chiropractic care

solely with the spine or with diseases or disorders involving the spine. In reality, chiropractic care treats disorders throughout the body that may or may notoriginate at the spine. Issues that do not seem associated with the spine, such as migraine or pinched nerve, can actually be relieved with a manipulation or adjustment of the spine. The purpose of an adjustment is to reincorporate movement to your spine enabling it to return closer to its natural state, resulting in better movement and better health. In our everyday lives, we overuse or misuse our muscles or we suffer from unnatural impact on our body. This can lead to inflammation, discomfort, pain and diminished mobility which can further manifest into more severe disorders if not treated properly. At our clinic, we relieve these issues with a hands-on approach to restore movement to your spine and other areas of the body. Treatments or adjustments include spinal and cervical manipulation and flexion-distraction. These forms of treatment work to restore the restricted movement in your spine and neck that are the source of your pain and discomfort.

Spinal manipulations are the most common form of a chiropractic adjustment. Being a key part of our central nervous system, spinal manipulations can alleviate pain and discomfort caused by irritation from spinal restrictions. In addition, manipulations encourage movement allowing nutrients to travel to our joints. Our joints cannot receive nutrients without proper movement and blood flow. Flexion-distraction is a procedure that relieves neck and back pain. It is performed on a table specifically designed for this treatment. The flexing, extending and bending pieces allow the chiropractor to make adjustments that relieve lower back, leg, and arm and neck pain, caused by disc herniations as well as neuropathic pain (pinched nerve).

Graston Technique Graston Technique is form of soft tissue manipulation that utilizes stainless steel instruments. By using this toolkit of instruments, the doctor can precisely release and lengthen tightened tissue at a deeper level than just using hands. Scar tissue is broken down and reabsorbed into the body.

Soft tissue is the tissue that surrounds your organs and connects your non-bone structures. These include ligaments, tendons, fat, fibrous tissues, and other connective tissues. Soft tissue is essential to communication between layers of muscles and the proper functioning of those muscles. Graston Technique is often a compliment to a chiropractic treatment plan as well as physical therapy. It is also advantageous tWo receive treatment before, during, and after a sports event. This enables your muscles to warm up properly to enhance performance and recover efficiently to return to training. It is beneficial for all level athletes of any sport. NFL players can often be seen receiving it on the sidelines at games.

Before Treatment You will undergo a consultation

with the doctor to understand your specific concerns and needs. Graston Technique will be added to your treatment plan if the doctor feels you will benefit from it.

During Treatment While being treated, you may experience

increased skin temperature from the increased rate of blood flow to and from the area. You may also feel some discomfort as the doctor uses the instruments to manually manipulate your tissues.

After Treatment You may have redness, soreness and/

or bruising from the treatment since it works your tissues on a very deep level. A treatment plan usually lasts for 4-5 weeks with two treatments per week. Most patients have a positive response by the third to fourth treatment.

Vibration Therapy is a supplemental form of therapy

Vibration Therapy

that compliments well with chiropractic treatment and physical therapy. It is based on using a vibration plate or machine to stimulate the muscles and tendons. A vibration plate uses minute and rapid up-and-down and right-and-left vibrations to strengthen muscles and tendons. At Mui Chiropractic and Sports Medicine, vibration therapy is used to reprogram and rebuild muscular imbalances. It is an effective therapy during physical rehabilitation from accidents or injuries, including those incurred during car accidents and sports, and can strengthen the weakened muscles and help decrease recovery time. Our clinic currently uses the vibeplate. Its benefits include improving sports performance, medical rehabililition, and health and fitness.

Testimonials

It really took me alot to make a decision about a chiropractor seeing as the last one i went to didn’t go so well. I looked on yelp and see some of the reviews and throught to give Dr. Mui a try. From the start Dr. Mui made me feel really comfortable with his politeness, especially reassuring me that he was only here to help me. Me being a basketball player he focused more on the strengthening of my back and knees. Before I came to Dr. Mui i could hardly walk straight, my lower and mid-back were in constant pain. He really did well with adjusting and finding exactly where the problem was. He also gave me stretches and techniques to help me throughout my day since i sit at a desk everyday. It only took about 6 visits for me to be able to get back on the court seeing as thats major conparing to the 12 I used with the last chiropractor without any results. I DEFINITELY recommend Dr. Mui if you want fast and instant results on alot of different injuries and pains, not just the back. I HIGHLY recommend him to sports players or ex-sports players who are playing or trying to get back into it like myself. I am now back on the court with almost no pain, running jumping and playing basketball again. The changes made to my body by Dr. Mui were amazing.

Both my wife and I have been going to Dr. Mui for a couple months now for a variety of issues (clicking knee, shoulder tension, tendinitis) and he has been great. Really listens to us and produces results. My wife can hold our baby in her arms again without shooting pains and that's huge for us. He used Graston on both of us and he clearly has a mastery of it. He also walks us through in detail the source of our issues so we can better understand how to improve them. I can't recommend Dr. Mui enough, give him a chance and you won't regret it. He truly wants to help

I am impressed with the way Dr Mui goes about providing care. He is focused on treating the root cause of a problem,

people and it comes through in every session.

and releasing the patience from his care. During my first visit we discussed my concern, I had a tight back that I felt needed cracking, and wanted to be loose to improve my golf swing. After analyzing how my body moved during a golf swing he stated that he wanted to think over night about the best way to get the results I wanted. The next visit we began with heating pad and then the Graston Technique of massage on my hamstrings and pecks. I am amazed at the results after the first treatment. I gained significant range of motion in my upper body, improved my posture, and my hamstrings are free of knots and smooth. We repeated this process and also included exercises to improve coordination on a vibration plate. I have visited Dr Mui 5 times and I now have a stretching routine and exercises to maintain my flexibility. I recently had my golf swing speed measured at 105 mph and hit a ball 295 yards on an indoor simulator. This is very promising as I have not swung a club for three months.

I recently became a patient of Dr Mui after a friend referred me. I was desperate. It was a week before the Boston Marathon, I was out on my last training run and my right knee gave out 13 miles into a 17 mile run. I was in so much pain I had to call for a ride home, which I had never done before. Ever! I have had knee issues in the past. In college I ran cross-country and waitressed, which was a lot on my knees. The doctors told me it was just overuse and to stay off them. A runner doesn’t isn’t happy with that answer! It was a week before the Boston Marathon (one of my life time aspirations) and I was out of commission, desperate and depressed. I called Dr Mui and explained the situation, expecting him to say there wasn’t much he could do. But instead he gave me an appointment and said he would do his best to get me through the marathon. I went to see Dr Mui 3 times that week. Dr Mui used the Graston technique/F.A.K.T.R and tools to work on my knees. He also noticed I had a leg discrepancy. My left femur is slightly longer than my right. He gave me an inexpensive heel lift to fix the problem. How come no one noticed that before! I had been to a couple doctors in the past who had over looked it. When Dr Mui pointed it out it was easily noticed. I am happy to report that I finished the Boston Marathon in 5:06:17 pain free (in my knees of course, marathons hurt). Even after beating on them for 26.2 miles! They still did not hurt the next day. I feel so lucky to have found Dr Mui and the Graston technique. I want to tell everyone what amazing

work he does!!

Results Comparison

Mike Spinnato Mike visited Mui Chiropractic and Sports Medicine two months before running the 114th annual Boston Marathon. Five months prior to the Boston Marathon, Mike ran the Chicago Marathon with an impressive qualifying time of 3:02:12. Looking to continue to improve his time, Mike strenuously trained for the Boston race. While doing so, Mike experienced signs of wear and tear. He came to our clinic with hip pain (bilateral Iliotibial band syndrome), pain in his shin splints (bilateral medial tibial stress syndrome), and a collection of minor issues caused from the stress of training. Mike received a series of treatments to address his pain. His plan included chiropractic manipulation, Graston technique as well as a stretching and strengthening program for him to perform out of our clinic. Our chiropractic care enabled Mike to train without pain. Coupling his treatments with his hard work, Mike was able to cut an impressive 15 minutes from his total time which is an 8% improvement in only 5 months time.
