Program Notes Journey Through the Void (2013)

Tim Fisher

Journey Through the Void has two connotations for me. The first is space, with a crew about to embark on a Star Trek-eque voyage of discovery. The second connotation is of going caving. In both instances, the journey begins with a sense of trepidation. You are faced with brooding darkness. What lies beyond, hidden in that darkness? Then you begin and trepidation is overtaken by excitement. The unknown is now a thrilling, exhilarating voyage of discovery. You press ever onwards towards your destination. But what will the journey’s end bring- triumph or disaster? (Program notes by Tim Fischer) The 7th graders used the composer’s vision and compared it to areas of their life where they were in similar situations. Whether it was going zip lining, starting middle school, or overcoming personal obstacles, it became evident that each and every 7th grader found a way to relate the power of this piece to their own lives. As an educator, it was extraordinary to see how their performance matured after they made their own personal connections. Minka’s Sleigh Ride (2007)

arr. Pierre La Plant (b. 1943)

“Minka” is an old Ukrainian/Cossack folk song that has survived the test of time and even found favor with classical composers the likes of Weber, Hummel, and Beethoven. Beethoven arranged many folk songs for voice, including “Schone Minka,” as it is often referred to, and wrote a set of Variations for Flute or Violin and Piano (Op. 107, No. 7). Free translated, a few lines of “Schone Minka” reads: Lovely Minka, I must leave. Oh, don’t you feel the anguish… On the mountain, in the groves, I call for you… (Program notes by Pierre La Plante)

Still, Still, Still (2011)

arr. Randall D. Standridge (b. 1976)

Christmas carols are some of the most beloved music of all time. During my years of teaching, it has saddened me to realize that many of my students don’t know a wide array of carols. Still, Still, Still is a gorgeous German carol that I felt would make an excellent addition to the concert repertoire and serve as a great teaching tool, both musically and culturally, for my students. The carol describes a peaceful, snowing evening during the nativity. This setting was written to be accessible for younger bands while providing enough depth to be used by more advanced bands as well. (Program notes by Randall D. Standridge) Caprice (1989)

William Himes (b. 1943)

A caprice (often called by its Italian translation, capriccio) is a light and fanciful work. As a musical form, it first appeared in early Italian baroque music, serving as a precursor to its more serious cousin, the fugue. Spirited and often humorous, caprices appear in the works of such composers as Bach, Schumann, Stravinski, Paganini, and Rachmaninoff. Caprice is a bright and effervescent composition, true to the spirit of its title. The ostinato eighth note pattern at the beginning is retained throughout the opening A section of the piece, darting mischievously between the sections of the band. The melodic material is carried primarily by the trumpets and upper woodwinds; nevertheless, section solis abound, especially during the piece’s contemplative B section. Based loosely upon an earlier motif, it features the trumpets and clarinets over a rich countermelody played by the saxophones and horns. (Program notes by William Himes) The Adventures of Kid Cam, the Rocketman! (2013)

David R. Holsinger (b. 1945)

Part of my life’s journey as a composer has included the “Children’s Dances,” and now, in the past several years, it has become necessary that I move on to the next generation. In 2005 I wrote “Kaylen Dreaming” for my first granddaughter, and now it’s time for several more movements to be added to the “Grandkid Suite.” (program notes continued on next page)

Niles & Lindsay’s son, Cameron Rex, is ALL BOY. He is the apple of his mother’s eye “pay-back” for his father! He is like every other youngster exploring the world , but his biggest obsession is ANYTHING that flies - Be it airplane, helicopter, or … super hero! So it seemed appropriate, at least in this juncture in life, to give the boy his own Theme Music. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s KID CAM, THE ROCKETMAN! (And now you know who was one of my heroes growing up … ) (Program notes by David R. Holsinger)

The Machine Awakes (2013) for wind band & electronic accompaniment

Steven Bryant (b. 1972)

The Machine Awakes is the sound of something not human (but of human hands) - something not entirely organic, but most definitely alive - waking for the first time. From the opening swirling textures, we sense the first hesitant sparks of thought, attempting to find form and coherence. This new machine sentient, aware - comes fully awake, possessed of emphatic self-determination and unfathomable purpose. (Program notes by Steven Bryant) Black Rainbow (2013) for percussionists & symphonic band

Nathan Daughtrey (b. 1975)

Commissioned by the Coventry High School Band (Ned F. Smith, director), Black Rainbow explores the elusive and mystical moonbow – a rainbow produced by light reflected off the surface of the moon. Because it is dark when a moonbow appears, the human eye cannot detect the full spectrum of colors that are present, making the moonbow appear to lack color, thus the name black rainbow. Using the spectrum of 7 colors found in all rainbows – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet or R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. – I derived a pitch set that is used as the thematic material throughout: B-flat, G, F, C-flat, G-flat, D-flat, D-natural. Additionally, the work divides into seven sections, traveling through the colors, each with its own unique energy. (program notes continued on next page)

Red: activity, energy, passion Orange: creativity, playfulness, equilibrium Yellow: wisdom, clarity of thought, orderliness Green: harmony, sympathy, growth, expansion Blue: peace & understanding, calm, relaxation Indigo: infinity, bridge between the finite & the infinite Violet: combination of red and blue energies; viewed as both an ending and a beginning (Program notes by Nathan Daughtrey) Arabesque (2009)

Samuel R. Hazo (b. 1966)

Arabesque was commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association and written for the 2008 Indiana All-State Band. Arabesque is based on the mystical sounds of Middle Eastern music and it is composed in three parts, “taqasim” (tah’-zeem), “dabka” (dupp-keh), and “chorale.” The opening flute cadenza, although written out in notes, is meant to sound like an Arabic taqasim or improvisation. Much the same as in jazz improvisation, the soloist is to play freely in the scales and modes of the genre. In this case, the flute plays in bitonal harmonic minor scales, and even bends one note to capture the microtonality (quarter-tones) of the music from this part of the world. However, opposite to jazz, taqasim has very little change to the chordal or bass line accompaniment. It is almost always at the entrance to a piece of music and is meant to set the musical and emotional tone. The second section, a dabka, is a traditional Arabic line dance performed at celebrations, most often at weddings. It’s drumbeat, played by a dumbek or durbake hand drum, is unmistakable. Even though rhythmically simple, it is infectious in its ability to capture the toe-tapping attention of the listener. The final section, the chorale, is a recapitulation of previous mystical themes in the composition, interwoven with grandeur of a sparkling ending. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated to the United States; my mother’s parents were Lebanese, my father’s mother was Lebanese and his father was Assyrian. Sometimes in composition, the song comes from the heart, sometimes from the mind, and sometimes (as in this case) it’s in your blood. The Indiana Bandmasters Association asked for a piece that was unique. I had not heard any full-out Arabic pieces for wind orchestra, and I knew of this culture’s deep and rich musical properties... so I figured that one might as well come from me. (Plus, my mom asked if I was ever going to write one.) I hope you enjoy Arabesque. (Program notes by Samuel R. Hazo)
