Program Notes Alpha Bravo Niner (2011)

Drew Morris

The title Alpha Bravo Niner is a reference to the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, a set of words used to stand for the letters of an alphabet in oral communication. A spelling alphabet is used to spell parts of a message containing letters and numbers to avoid the confusion of similar sounding numbers and letters. For example, the sounds of "n" and "m" or "f" and “s" can be easily misinterpreted; confusion increases if static or other interference is present. The message "proceed to map grid DH98" could be transmitted as "proceed to map grid Delta-Hotel-Niner-Ait". Using "Delta" instead of "D" avoids confusion between "DH98" and "BH98" or "TH98". The unusual pronunciation of certain numbers was designed to reduce confusion as well. The piece begins sparsely - a musical ‘morse code’ if you will. Soon after the timpani and keyboards layer in, setting the tone for a covert operation. The tension rises as the operation gets underway and our operatives have a couple of close calls. However, the mission is a success with only rapidly-beating hearts as evidence of the near-failure - musically represented by the return of the opening theme combined with the drumming from the climactic moments. (Program notes by Rick Schadt) Frogs (2018)

Randall D. Standridge (b. 1976)

Frogs ignites the imagination of young musicians while introducing them to unusual and sophisticated compositional techniques. Randall D. Standridge represents the sounds of abundant swamp life with small melodic leaps to bring jumping frogs to mind; low brass melodies to imitate bullfrogs croaking; and trills to simulate flies, gnats and other insects buzzing about. This concert work is a nod to the innovative music of Percy Aldridge Grainger. Chromaticism, unresolved moments, surprising harmonic shifts, folk dance charm and other “Graingerisms” abound in this delightful and artful composition. (Program notes by VanderCook College of Music Symphonic Band)

Shipwrecked (2010)

Ryan Nowlin (b. 1977)

The high seas have always held a sense of mystery and attraction for those with an adventurous spirit. Its unexplainable lure and the promise of foreign lands have enticed the likes of explorers such as Magellan and Christopher Columbus, immigrants seeking a new life and new opportunities, and even pirates and treasure hunters. But the sea seemingly has a will of its own, and has claimed the lives and ships of countless travelers. This piece exists only in the moment of tragedy and fright. Performed with a sense of urgency, the setting of this story is up to the students’ imaginative interpretation. The piece begins in the open sea when tragedy has struck. The peal of the chimes sounds the alarm while suspended cymbal and finger snapping depict the waves and the rain. The ominous entires of the different sized drums create a sense of panic. By ms. 9, the occupants of the ill-fated ship must now make split-second decisions to save their lives. (Program notes by Ryan Nowlin) Shackelford Banks (Tale of Wild Mustangs) (2003)

Jay Bocook (b. 1953)

Wild Horses have been found on the barrier islands of Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia since the early explorers first visited the continent. Some of the horses swam to shore as a result of shipwrecks. Others perhaps got free from, or were abandoned by early settlers moving inward. These hardy souls have withstood storm and tempest, and in a few cases they have survived the incursion of modern man. In 1998, the horses on Shackelford Bands, an uninhabited island in the outer banks of North Carolina, were going to be moved elsewhere. However, many people gathered up enough support for the horses to stay and be protected. These Mustangs proudly remain and flourish to this day. (Program notes by Jay Bocook)

March of the Trolls (2013) from Lyric Suite, Op. 54

Edvard Grieg 1843-1907

Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, shorttempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. (Program notes by Brian Beck) John Williams: Movie Adventures (1999)

John Williams (b. 1932)

In a career spanning five decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all eight Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone, and The Book Thief. His 40-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, and Lincoln. (Program notes by The San Antonio Symphony) John Williams: Movie Adventures is a medley that captures the excitement of several of Williams’ biggest hits, including “Star Wars” (Main Theme), “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Theme from “Jurassic Park”, and Theme from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. (Program notes by Hal Leonard Corporation)
