Program Notes March to Castle Rock (1998)

Steve Hodges (b. 1950)

March to Castle Rock is a lively march in the minor mode. Set in a "Marziale" style, this piece begins and ends forcefully, with a flowing middle section to provide an effective contrast. Abounding with rhythmic vitality and aggressive dynamics, this march is guaranteed to get the band fully energized! (Program notes by Steve Hodges) Lullaby for PJ (2016)

Nathan Daughtrey (b. 1975)

Lullaby for PJ is dedicated to my beautiful baby daughter, born on May 9, 2016. Originally written as a duet for bells and vibraphone in the collection “Duology: 10 Duets for Young Percussionists,” the piece has been expanded to include more accessory instruments, providing young percussion ensembles to join in the fun. Unlike most pieces for young percussion ensemble, Lullaby for PJ exposes students to playing delicately at a fairly slow tempo. (Program notes by Nathan Daughtrey) Begin Transmission (2016)

John Herndon (b. 1985)

Begin Transmission is intended to be an exciting first adventure into the world of percussion ensemble music for groups with approximately one year of experience. It provides opportunities for students to apply skills and concepts which they have been developing by working out of method books in a percussion ensemble setting. Most players get to experiment with different timbres by either playing on the rim of their drum or by switching instruments. This begins preparing them for more advanced literature and provides some diversity to the composition. (Program notes by Tapspace Publishing Company)

Remember Me (from “Coco”) (2017)

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (b. 1972 & b. 1975)

Pixar Studios struck box office gold again with the imaginative and original animated film "Coco." The fascinating story is built around Mexican folklore and features characteristic music that's included in this wonderful setting of the main song, Remember Me. Opening in an entrancing ballad style, it shifts to a faster upbeat tempo highlighted with a spirited mariachi flavor. (Program notes by Hal Leonard Publishing Company) Jungle Dance (2011)

Brian Balmages (b. 1975)

Jungle Dance is a new type of piece for me. It depicts a celebration in the middle of a jungle. It is not specific to people -- it actually represents the celebration of all living things -- animals, plants, and people-- all coming together in a high energy celebration of life and nature. The melody itself is quite infectious and is treated as a passacaglia... The melody repeats constantly while the textures, rhythms and harmonies around it change and develop. (Program notes by Brian Balmages) The Irish Baker (2016)

Traditional arr. Robert Longfield (b. 1947)

Two fiddle traditionals are combined in this lively setting for concert band. The American bluegrass favorite Angelina the Baker is creatively arranged in the style of a Celtic dance tune. After a flowing, lyric opening statement, the drones and rhythms of an Irish jig take the band and the audience on an exuberant romp! (Program notes by Hal Leonard Publishing Company)

Lullabye (Waltz for Band) (2009)

Randall D. Standridge (b. 1976)

Lullabye is a waltz for concert band. The melody, to me, suggests the comforting and wandering qualities inherent in most bedtime songs, along with an almost melancholy, bitter-sweet sentiment. Nearly all sections of the band get to perform the singing melody in this heartfelt waltz for concert band. Beautiful in its simplicity, this is one of the most gorgeous tunes yet from the pen of a young writer much noted for the lyricism of his melodies. It unfolds from a unison, unaccompanied clarinet melody, through a series of key changes, to an expansive moment of tutti high drama that is breathtaking in its beauty, and finally going to sleep with a melancholy statement from the percussion and a whispered "shhh" from the wind players. Gorgeous! (Program notes by Randall D. Standridge) Fable (2017)

Erik Morales (b. 1966)

Designed to play out like a fairy tale, Fable was inspired by ancient collections of children’s stories such as Aesop’s Fables and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Mostly, these stories were created to instill values of making right and good decisions. However, many of these stories often resolved in dark ways. This was especially true of the stories created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Many of their stories were edited in later editions. (Program notes by Erik Morales)
