Program Notes Begin Transmission (2016)
John Herndon (b. 1985)
Begin Transmission is intended to be an exciting first adventure into the world of percussion ensemble music for groups with approximately one year of experience. It provides opportunities for students to apply skills and concepts which they have been developing by working out of method books in a percussion ensemble setting. Most players get to experiment with different timbres by either playing on the rim of their drum or by switching instruments. This begins preparing them for more advanced literature and provides some diversity to the composition. (Program notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) Tentacles (2016)
John Willmarth (b. 1974)
A composition for young percussionists, Tentacles depicts the flexible appendages found on some of the ocean’s most mysterious & elusive creatures. Flowing, yet powerful , the work explores the different facets of tentacles. (Program notes by John Willmarth) Black Rainbow (2013)
Nathan Daughtrey (b. 1975)
Commissioned by the Coventry High School Band (Ned F. Smith, director), Black Rainbow explores the elusive and mystical moonbow – a rainbow produced by light reflected off the surface of the moon. Because it is dark when a moonbow appears, the human eye cannot detect the full spectrum of colors that are present, making the moonbow appear to lack color, thus the name black rainbow. Using the spectrum of 7 colors found in all rainbows – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet or R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. – I derived a pitch set that is used as the thematic material throughout: B-flat, G, F, C-flat, G-flat, D-flat, D-natural. Additionally, the work divides into seven sections, traveling through the colors, each with its own unique energy. (program notes continued on next page)
Red: activity, energy, passion Orange: creativity, playfulness, equilibrium Yellow: wisdom, clarity of thought, orderliness Green: harmony, sympathy, growth, expansion Blue: peace & understanding, calm, relaxation Indigo: infinity, bridge between the finite & the infinite Violet: combination of red and blue energies; viewed as both an ending and a beginning (Program notes by Nathan Daughtrey)
Cricket (2018)
Brian Slawson (b. 1956)
Inspired by an energetic, percussion-playing niece of the same nickname, Cricket is a playful work for xylophone with a fun piano accompaniment. (Program notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) Toboggan (2015)
John Herndon (b. 1985)
Toboggan depicts a short, fast ride on a small sled. The piece starts by capturing excitement of finding new-fallen snow. The descent swishes and jingles at high speed through sudden direction changes, patches of rough snow, and gentle rising and falling of fresh powder. Toboggan ends, as sled rides often do, with a playful crash into a snowdrift. (Program notes by John Herndon) Etudes de Lux (1994)
Siegfried Fink 1928-2006
Etudes de Lux is from “7 Stucke for Marimba”, a fantastic collection of works by a dynamic range of composers. The solos were all composed for the 3rd International Percussion Competition in Luxembourg. Siegfried Fink was a renowned German percussionist & composer, and received the Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the Percussive Arts Society of the US. (Program notes by Zimmermann-Frankfurt Publishing Company)
Alpha Bravo Niner (2011)
Drew Morris (b. 1984)
The title Alpha Bravo Niner is a reference to the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, a set of words used to stand for the letters of an alphabet in oral communication. A spelling alphabet is used to spell parts of a message containing letters and numbers to avoid the confusion of similar sounding numbers and letters. For example, the sounds of "n" and "m" or "f" and “s" can be easily misinterpreted; confusion increases if static or other interference is present. The message "proceed to map grid DH98" could be transmitted as "proceed to map grid Delta-Hotel-Niner-Ait". Using "Delta" instead of "D" avoids confusion between "DH98" and "BH98" or "TH98". The unusual pronunciation of certain numbers was designed to reduce confusion as well. (Program notes by Rick Schadt) Moon (2018)
Adam Tan (b. 1985)
Moon is an intermediate solo for 4.3 octave marimba, based on the Chinese mythological mid-autumn festival story of Chang'e and her husband Houyi. The story of Chang’e is the most widely accepted tale regarding the moon and the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is said that in ancient times, ten suns existed and the extreme heat made people's lives very difficult. It was the hero Houyi, who, owing to his great strength, shot down nine of the ten suns. On hearing of this amazing feat and the hero who performed it, people came from far and wide to learn from him. Peng Meng was among these people. Later, Houyi married a beautiful and kind-hearted woman named Chang’e and lived a happy life. One day, Houyi came upon Wangmu (the queen of heaven) on the way to meet his old friend. Wangmu presented him an elixir which, if took, would cause him to ascend immediately to heaven and become a god/goddess. Instead of drinking the potion himself, Houyi took it home and presented it to Chang’e to keep. Unfortunately, Peng Meng secretly saw Houyi give the potion to his wife and three days later, while Houyi was out hunting, Peng Meng rushed into the backyard and demanded that Chang’e hand over the elixir. Knowing that she could not win, she took out the elixir and swallowed it immediately. The moment she drank it, she flew out of the window and up into the sky. (program notes continued on next page)
Chang’e's great love for her husband drew her towards the Moon, which is the nearest place to the earth on the heaven. On realizing what happened to his wife, Houyi was so grieved that he shouted Chang’e’s name to the sky. He was amazed to see a figure which looked just like his wife appeared in the Moon. He took the food liked by Chang’e to an altar and offered it as a sacrifice for her. After hearing that Chang’e became a goddess, folk people also offered sacrifices to Chang’e to pray for peace and good luck. Since then, the custom of sacrificing to the moon has been spread among the folklore. (Program notes by Adam Tan & TravelChinaGuide.com) Sofapilla (2018)
Chuck Ricotta (b. 1978)
Sofapilla (pronounced Soh-fah-pee-uh) is a Latin inspired, groove-oriented piece for 10-14 players. Because of the rhythmic variety within individual parts, players must be aware of how their rhythms fit into their fellow performer’s rhythms so that the overall groove is solid. It was written for and premiered by the Winston Churchill High School Percussion Ensemble of Livonia, Michigan. (Program notes by Tapspace Publishing Company)

About Our Cause What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. The disease causes the body to produce thick and sticky mucus. This clogs the lungs & pancreas making it hard for patients to breathe and absorb nutrients from the food they eat. For more information on Cystic Fibrosis, visit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website: https://www.cff.org/What-is-CF/About-Cystic-Fibrosis/ What is Rock CF? The Rock CF Foundation is a 501(C)3 Nonprofit Corporation. Founded and led by Emily Schaller, The Rock CF Foundation is dedicated to increasing the quality of life for people with Cystic Fibrosis. Rock CF is heightening awareness and making sure that an illness that often goes unseen, doesn’t get forgotten. In 2004 Emily got the idea to bring awareness to Cystic Fibrosis by throwing a rock show for her friends, a few years later in 2007 Rock CF was born. What began as one woman on a mission to educate her peers through some banging drums and guitar licks has now, a decade later, evolved into a multi faceted organization inspiring people living with CF to lead more healthy lifestyles and bringing awareness about CF to the metro Detroit community at large. Rock CF is empowering individuals with CF to live healthy lifestyles, through their Kicks Back Program, race sponsorships, and nutrition coaching. Their annual Half Marathon in Detroit, and apparel line has helped to fund research through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. More ways to make a difference About ‘Great Strides’ Milwaukee For more than 30 years, Great Strides – the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event – has supported the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and raise awareness for this rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that makes it difficult to breathe and shortens lives. Registration is free, but walkers are encouraged to raise funds. Your support will help accelerate innovative research and drug development, as well as advance care and advocacy. Nearly every CF drug was made possible by the Foundation and because of funds raised from Great Strides, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives and pursuing their dreams. We are working every day to build on this incredible momentum, and we won’t stop until there is a cure for all people living with CF. The time is now. Together, we can cross the finish line.
Support our Blue2 Family - Join ‘Team Brosto’ This years show “Breathe” was insipred by and dedicated to our very own percussion technician, Adam Brostowitz. He has lived with CF for his entire life.
