Program Notes Acclaim (2018)

Rob Grice b. 1964

Acclaim is an exciting contemporary work that is suitable for festival performances or ceremonial events. Carefully scored, this work provides teaching material that will bring out the best qualities of younger bands. With energetic rhythms and uplifting themes, it celebrates the journey that music students and their teachers take to create inspiring performances. While in pursuit of the ‘perfect’ performance, remember to take time and celebrate each step of achievement along the way. (Program Notes by Wingert-Jones Publications ) Dreidl Adventure (1727)

Traditional Israeli arr. Scott Watson b. 1982

Playing with a dreidl at Hanukkah can be more than a game, in the mind of a child it can be an adventure. Strategy is plotted, risks are taken and the battle ensues. This fanciful premise inspired this spirited setting with intense rhythmic drive of the beloved melody S'Vivon (The Dreidl), all within the ability level of younger players. (Program Notes by JW Pepper) A Festive Finale (2019)

Brian Balmages b. 1975

A Festive Finale was written after numerous directors contacted me regarding my earlier work, A Festive Fanfare. While it had not occurred to me at the time, conductors were interested in the idea of bookending their concerts with two related pieces. After two years, I decided to dive in and see what the finale would look like. The opening of the finale mirrors the opening notes of the fanfare to bring everything full circle. From there, the music takes it’s own distinct personality and includes options for audience participation. (Notes continued on next page)

As with A Festive Fanfare, I did not intend for this piece to sound like a holiday medley. Rather, I wanted it to sound like a symphonic work that happens to touch on various holiday tunes throughout while incorporating a bit of original material as well. I am thrilled with the result and and hope bands will enjoy playing it as much as I did writing it. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages) Through Courageous Eyes (2003)

Brian Balmages b. 1975

This piece is written in memory of Matt Rhodes, a student at John T. Baker Middle School who passed away while fighting spina bifida. He was an extremely spirited individual; friends at his school said that he was the least handicapped person they had ever known. Despite his confinement to a wheelchair, he always entered a room with a smile. This piece is a tribute to his life. It is not a mournful piece, even in its slow and tranquil beginning. Rather, it celebrates his courage and determination to live as positively as possible. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages) On the Kerry Shore (2017)

Jack Wilds b. 1986

On the Kerry Shore is a tribute to a beautiful harbor town in Ireland named Dingle. The piece begins with a steady percussion texture, meant to represent placid seas with a cool morning breeze blowing in. Small snippets of the melody represent the gentle rise and fall of the surf on the shore. A subtle combination of ocean drum and ship’s bell complete the nautical picture. (Program Notes by Jack Wilds) Fantasia on ‘Christmas Comes Anew’ (2019)

Traditional French Carol arr. Michael Story b. 1956

"Christmas Comes Anew," also known as "Noel Nouvelet" and "Sing We Now of Christmas," is a popular French carol written in the early 1500s. Michael Story's fantasia setting will be sure to bring a holiday smile to the faces of all! (Program Notes by Alfred Music)

MHS Band Auditions Auditions for the MHS Band Program are just around the corner! Parents, please encourage your 8th grade student to audition. MHS Band Audition Frequently Asked Questions Does my student have to audition to be in band at MHS? No, but we strongly encourage all students to take an audition. This allows instructors to see your student’s musical skills and ensure that they are placed in an ensemble that will help them best develop and grow as a musician. If a student does not audition they are placed in Concert Winds or Concert Percussion (see the next page for more information). How do I know if my student is good enough to audition? All students should take an audition regardless of their ability level. This helps us get to know your student musician and ensures that they are in an ensemble that best fits their musical skills and goals. How does my student audition/what are the requirements? A detailed informational handout including a link to our online audition sign up will be emailed out to families after this concert. Audition excerpts along with hard copies of the informational handout are available in the PVMS and MHS Band Rooms. When are auditions? Auditions take place in late January - see the informational handout and link to the online sign up for more information.

MHS Band Course Offerings Concert Winds & Concert Percussion Open to 9th-12th grade students, Concert Winds and Concert Percussion is designed as an introductory ensemble that prepares students with an interest in music for the rigors of high school band. This is a non-auditioned ensemble and all students who do not audition will be placed in this course. To provide students with the very best instruction, winds (woodwinds and brass) and percussion rehearse as two separate courses - just like our 7th grade band. All curricular requirements (concerts, pep bands, etc.) apply to this ensemble. Similar to: Non-honors classes, JV2 Teams Symphonic Band Open to 9th-12th grade students, Symphonic Band is our mid-level ensemble that serves those students with a high interest in performance and in the development of their musical skills. This is an auditioned band, although students can be placed in this ensemble, if needed, to fill out instrumentation. Students in this ensemble are expected to practice outside of class. Winds and Percussion rehearse together in this course. All curricular requirements (concerts, pep bands, etc.) apply to this ensemble. Similar to: Honors classes (ie. Honors Freshman English), JV1 Teams Wind Ensemble Open to 9th-12th grade students, Wind Ensemble performs at the highest level. Students in this course are passionate about music and have both exceptional musical skills and a dedicated work ethic. This is an auditioned band and students are only accepted through this process. Daily practice and additional work outside of class is an expectation of this ensemble. Winds and Percussion rehearse together in this course. All curricular requirements (concerts, pep bands, etc.) apply to this ensemble. Similar to: AP courses, Varsity Teams
