Program Notes Southampton March (2017)
Robert Sheldon b. 1954
When one thinks of the march genre, the pieces that come to one’s mind are the many works of John Philip Sousa (including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “The Liberty Bell”). However, while most marches are pieces of music with a strong regular rhythm that were frequently performed by military bands, you might be surprised to learn that there are actually dozens of sub-genres with influences from many countries around the world. Southampton March carries many of the characteristics common of a British-style march such as a more moderate, stately pace, a wide range of dynamics (including some very delicate sections), and intricate countermelodies. (Program Notes by Rick Schadt)
Music from “Brave” (2012)
Scott Doyle b. 1953 arr. Michael Sweeney
“Brave” was a Disney-Pixar film produced in 2012. The soundtrack was composed by Patrick Doyle and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, making this is the first (and as of now, only) Pixar film to not be scored in Los Angeles. The soundtrack features Doyle's musical score and features two original songs performed by Scottish singer Julie Fowlis (written by Alex Mandel and Mark Andrews, produced by Jim Sutherland), and one original song performed by Birdy and Mumford & Sons. Brave was the first Disney film to feature music lyrics in Scottish Gaelic. The lullaby duet between the characters Merida and Queen Elinor entitled "A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal (Noble Maiden Fair)” (music by Patrick Doyle, lyrics by Patrick Neil Doyle) appears on three occasions in different variations within the fabric of the score, and uniquely includes Gaelic vocals by Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker. (Program Notes from Wikipedia.org)
Avalanche Lake (2018)
Patrick Speranza b. 1991
Avalanche Lake was inspired by a trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. The lake sits at the base of Bearhat Mountain and Little Matterhorn and is accessible by a five-mile hike through forested mountains. The gorgeous view is enhanced by several long waterfalls that can be seen plunging down the side of the mountains. The piece begins in a way that reflects on the quiet beauty of this scene before becoming more energetic and ultimately reflecting exuberance and joy. (Program Notes by Patrick Speranza)
Russian Sailor’s Dance (1927 / 1998)
Reinhold Gliere (1875 - 1956) arr. Mark Williams
The ballet “The Red Poppy” was written in 1927 (revised 1949). It deals with an uprising on board Chinese ship and the successful intervention of Russian sailors. The Russian Sailor’s Dance is the best-known excerpt from the ballet, and is founded on the popular Russian folk tune title Yablochka (little apple). The dance takes the form of a series of variations on this striking song. Interestingly enough, this folk tune was used both as a revolutionary and counter-revolutionary song throughout Russian history. (Program Notes from Program Notes for Band)
Egyptique (2010)
William Owens b. 1963
The civilization of ancient Egypt spans over 3,000 years, with its earliest people settling in the Nile Valley around 7000 B.C. Egyptique gives a glimpse of this wondrous time, bringing forth images of notable monuments like the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza. With rich harmonies and driving rhythms, this piece offers a brief musical encounter with all things ancient Egypt. (Program Notes by William Owens)
The Bonsai Tree (“Sandai-Shogun no Matsu”) (2010)
Julie Giroux b. 1961
Sandai-Shogun no Matsu, a five-needle pine bonsai (Pinus pentaphylla var. negishi) is considered one of Japan’s national treasures. The tree is at least 500 years old and is considered to be one of the oldest known living bonsai trees. It is documented as having been cared for by Tokugawa Iemitsu (August 12, 1604 - June 8, 1651) who was the third shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. SandaiShogun no Matsu is housed in the Tokyo Imperial Palace. "Although the center of this famous tree’s trunk is now totally hollow, it has been carefully nurtured for generations, and gazing at its gnarled form today, a sense of awe is felt at the forceful destiny that has allowed such a small piece of life to survive for so many centuries.” (Program Notes by Julie Giroux)
Great American Frontier (2004)
Erik Morales b. 1966
Ideas for this work were inspired by the many cowboy movies of the late 1960s. Use of percussion instruments and rhythms help to paint a clear and vivid portrait of the old American West. This work is dedicated to my father Peter I (1940-2000) who spent much of his free time reading and collecting books on the great American West. (Program Notes by Erik Morales)
Arabian Dances (2008)
Roland Barrett b. 1955
After a long day’s journey, the nomads set up camp for the evening. As the sun casts its final searing rays on the desert landscape, a campfire roars to life and the celebration begins. As the sky darkens, the festivities grow wilder and wilder until eventually, threee groups of revelers take turns dancing at the edge of the fire, each trying to outdo the other. Finally, the entire tribe joins, dancing wildly for hours until the campfire dims and morning grows near. (Program Notes by Roland Barrett)
