Program Notes

Arctic Wars: Rise of the Penguin Army (2020)

Brian Balmages b. 1975

I decided I wanted to write a piece for my son’s band to play at their Spring concert. Their mascot is PJ the Penguin. I decided to ask the students to all write a short description of their thoughts on the subject matter of the piece. A lot of responses included elements on war and battles, some included thoughts about looking back on their years in elementary school, and of course some included thoughts on a food fight (my own son failed me when he wrote about “hot dog versus pizza”). In reading all of the ideas, it struck me that I was able to combine several concepts into one. Thus, Arctic Wars was born. The title implies power, strength, and might. What particularly strikes me though is the subtitle. The way I view it, every student that graduates from Pinewood Elementary becomes part of an ever increasing penguin army. These are the students that some day will take on the world. They will be innovators, entrepreneurs, artists, leaders, doctors, and more. This is the best type of growing army I can possibly imagine, and is exactly what I want these kids to consider as they graduate. There will certainly be many battles ahead, but with an incredible education and involvement in the arts, nothing is insurmountable for our students as they look to the future. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages)

Midnight Mission (2005)

Brian Balmages b. 1975

Midnight Mission is designed to reflect a late-night adventure in which people are sneaking around in search of their mission objective. These midnight spies encounter various obstacles during their search, some more comical sounding than others, though the entire piece has a lighthearted effect, as it is meant to symbolize the childhood games many of us played as kids. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages)

Alarm (2019)

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976

According to dictionary.com, the definition reads: noun 1) A sudden fear or distressing suspense caused by an awareness of danger; apprehension; fright. 2) Any sound, outcry, or information intended to warn of approaching danger. 3) An automatic device that serves to call attention, to rouse from sleep, or warn of fire, smoke, an intruder, etc. 4) A warning sound; signal for attention. verb 1) To make fearful or apprehensive; distress 2) To warn of danger; rouse to vigilance and swift measures for safety I think that about covers it, don’t you? (Program Notes by Randall D. Standridge) High Voltage (2017)

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976

We live in an electric world. Our homes, our television, our games, our music, and our lives are all tied to this source of energy. It has the power to create and to destroy. It is truly one of the most awesome forces in our universe. High Voltage attempts to convey the energy and excitement of electricity racing across the sky, across wires, and across the world. When conceiving this piece, I knew that I wanted to incorporate electronic effects to enhance the meaning and programatic nature of the work. This work uses both a synthesizer and a set of sound effects to help create the aural experience for both the audience and the player. The work may be successfully performed without either of these effects, but it will definitely lose some of its, if you will, pardon the pun, “spark”. (Program Notes by Randall D. Standridge)

Down by the Salley Gardens (2019)

Irish Folk Melody arr. Michael Sweeney b. 1952

Down by the Salley Gardens was a poem written by William Butler Yeats, first published in 1889 as "An Old Song Re-Sung, an attempt to reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo, who often sings them to herself.” The haunting melody of this traditional Irish folk song is treated here in a warm and colorful setting. The instrumentation is varied and a wealth of musical elements are provided through creative harmonizations and carefully placed key changes. (Program notes by the Cy-Fair High School Band) The Bicycle (2020)

Ryan Ross b. 1983

Whether in a global crisis or in normal times, there are ensembles around the world the do not have access to all of the instruments in traditional wind band music. The SpectraFlex series is the perfect remedy. Each piece is built around only five to six parts. Each part has been has been transposed and octavedisplaced for multiple instruments that are generally in the same range spectrum. Originally for string orchestra, The Bicycle is a fun and energetic piece using staccato technique in the winds and a triangle and ratchet to imitate the sounds of your favorite bicycle. (Program notes by A. Alan Publications) River Poem (2019)

Tyler S. Grant b. 1995

River Poem was commissioned by the Muir Middle School Bands of Milford, Michigan. When their director, Kristin Blanchard, approached me about writing a work for her ensemble, she had the idea of surveying the students to generate inspiration and identify potential subject matter for the piece. (program notes continued on next page)

Upon reading their many responses, I found two ideas to be common. First, the students felt proud of the diversity within their ensemble and school community. Second, they felt that they were each on a journey- a journey that is individualized yet ultimately influenced by the people around them. I found these ideas to be quite compelling and inspiring. As I continued to think about how this might manifest into a single metaphor, I thought about the many water systems within and around the midwestern states. In addition to the great lakes, many river systems connect regions of the states that lead to larger masses of water. This seemed to be the perfect metaphor to describe the ecosystem that the students have created within their band program- a community with many differences, yet depends on one another in a journey to a bigger and brighter future. It is my hope that this work would encourage performers and audiences to consider how we interact with one another and how our own “journeys” have been positively shaped by those around us. (Program notes by Tyler S. Grant) Such Small Things (2017)

Ryan Ross b. 1975

My favorite moment every morning comes when my 4-month-old daughter, Penelope, wakes up full of smiles and optimism. The title, Such Small Things comes from a StoryPeople print that hangs in her nursery. Brian Andreas's words perfectly capture the anticipation of her arrival into this world. SUCH SMALL THINGS by BRIAN ANDREAS For a long time, there were only your footprints & laughter in our dreams & even from such small things, we knew we could not wait to love you forever. (Program notes by Nathan Daughtrey)
