Program Notes Winterland (2020)

Brian Slawson b. 1956

Winterland, an ensemble piece for young percussionists, is a cheerful and festive musical offering that will get any listener into the holiday spirit. In addition to standard instruments like glockenspiel, chimes, marimba, and timpani, the piece features a myriad of fun, toy-like instruments that all players are required to switch to midway through the piece. Fun instruments like slapstick, bell tree, castanets, a train whistle, and sleigh bells not only engage the players but help capture the spirit of the season. (Program Notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) Colliding Visions (2010)

Brian Balmages b. 1975

This might possibly be the most ironic piece I have ever written in my life. It began when a music program received a grant to commission a new work. The work was to be the highlight of the year for the students. But before starting the piece, I received notice from Rick Palese, band director at Prairie Hill Elementary in Cary, Illinois, that the district had a budget shortfall. The grant itself was not affected, but one fo the mandated cuts was the band program, grades 5-8. So began the process of writing a world premiere for a band that would no longer exist after its performance. Even more ironic is that it was written as the final piece for their concert. It would not be the last work the band would ever play. The title, Colliding Visions, focuses on the important issue facing the arts everywhere. This piece serves as an important reminder that we must all share our passion for music with others. When people look to cut funds, we should state with a firm and unified voice that it should not be from the arts. The arts are crucial to our culture and to our own well-being. Further, this adaptable arrangement comes in response to COVID-19, a time when music programs once again are fighting to remain in schools. If ever there was a time when students needed music in their lives, that time is now. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages)

Begin Transmission (2016)

John Herndon b. 1985

Begin Transmission is intended to be an exciting first adventure into the world of percussion ensemble music for groups with approximately one year of experience. It provides opportunities for students to apply skills and concepts which they have been developing by working out of method books in a percussion ensemble setting. Most players get to experiment with different timbres by either playing on the rim of their drum or by switching instruments. This begins preparing them for more advanced literature and provides some diversity to the composition. (Program Notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) Lion’s Gate (2019)

Robert Sheldon b. 1954

The grandeur and vibrancy of Vancouver's harbor is reflected in this vibrant programmatic piece for developing bands. Take a picturesque musical voyage under Lion's Gate Bridge and into the Pacific Ocean while being treated to a musical view of the majestic mountains and incredible scenery. (Program Notes by Robert Sheldon) Garden of the Black Rose (2001)

Robert Sheldon b. 1954

Garden of the Black Rose evokes images of medieval times. Dark moods and colorful orchestration encourage even young players to perform with great expression and intensity. The meditative opening yields to a fast-paced theme featuring rhythmic ostinato and melodic layering. Great fun to play and a refreshing selection for concert or contest. (Program Notes by Robert Sheldon)
