Program Notes A Festive Fanfare (2017)
Brian Balmages b. 1975
Written as a celebratory overture to a winter holiday program, this fanfare infuses driving original material with holiday favorites. This piece includes several well-know carols, through they are not approached as a medley. Rather, they are treated as small excerpts that appear throughout the fanfare without artificial transitions connecting them together. Carols include O Come, All Ye Faithful; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; Deck the Hall; Good King Wenceslas; Jingle Bells; and Joy to the World (Program Notes by Brian Balmages) Sledding (2014)
Greg Danner b. 1958
Sledding captures all of the innocence and excitement one experiences when playing in the snow. With its festive sleigh bells, clever harmonies, and hummable melodies, This piece is the perfect addition to a winter concert. (Program Notes by C. Alan Publications) Old Fashioned Sleigh Ride (2012)
Scott Watson b. 1962
Old-Fashioned Sleigh Ride paints a warm, nostalgic musical portrait of a onehorse, open-sleigh ride like those depicted in a "picture print by Currier & Ives." Woven into an easy-going theme are the clip-clop of horse's hooves (temple blocks), the regular ringing of bells on bobtails (sleigh bells), and the occasional whip (slap stick) and horse's whinny (trumpet). (Program Notes by Randall D. Standridge)
A Rollicking Hanukkah (2018)
Traditional Hanukkah Songs arr. Randall D. Standridge b. 1976
The annual observance of Hanukkah (or the Festival of Lights) is a special time of the year for the Jewish faith. Like many holidays, it is a time of celebration, family, remembrance, and song. A Rollicking Hanukkah is a whimsical work for concert band, intended to paint a picture of a person or persons galloping by horse across a snowy plain to a Hanukkah celebration. The songs Hanukkah, Oh Hannukkah, The Dreidel Song, and Sevivon, Sov, Sov, Sov are heard as the celebrants draw closer and closer to their destination. I hope you, your students, and your audience enjoy this setting of these well-loved melodies. (Program notes by Randall D. Standridge) Snow Angels (2017)
Randall D. Standridge b. 1976
Snow Angels was commissioned by the 2013-2014 Century Middle School Band of Lakeville, MN and their Conductor, Mr. Christopher Bolson. It is dedicated to the memory of Alyssa Ettl, a Lakeville student who tragically passed away in a car accident in December 2013. This piece is a musical meditation on the fragile nature of life and how people enter our lives and leave an impression - much like a child making an angel in the snow. Metallic colors evoke the image of a clear winter landscape, and a gentle mood is maintained for much of the work. The work culminates with a thundering climax, signifying the majesty of snow-covered mountains shining brightly in the sun. (Program notes by Randall D. Standridge) Christmas Declaration (2009)
Robert W. Smith b. 1958
Christmas Declaration, based on the traditional carols Hark The Herald Angels Sing and Angels We Have Heard on High, is our musical statement signaling the start of our holiday season. Beginning with a bold and majestic fanfare, the piece continues with a flourish based upon the traditional melodies. The fanfare returns to bring our Christmas Declaration to a powerful conclusion. Happy Holidays to all! (Program notes by Robert W. Smith)
