Program Notes Sic Semper Draconis (2019)
John Herndon b. 1985
Sic Semper Draconis is dragon-slaying music! Its title is a Latin phrase which means “thus always to dragons”. I first encountered phrase in The Ashtown Burials, a series of books by N.D. Wilson, and then a blog post by S.D. Smith. In that post S.D. Smith included a quotation by author G.K. Chesterton from Tremendous Trifles about the importance of stories: “Fairy tales, then, are not responsible for producing in children fear, or any shapes of fear; fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already, because he is in the world already… …The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he has had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” (Program Notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) March Zuma (2000)
John O'Reilly b. 1940
March Zuma is an outstanding march for beginners that sounds big and full with limited technical demands. Set in C minor, the march will reinforce a variety of sixteenth-note patterns. The low brass section is featured on the melody in the trio section, and snare drummers get to show off their rolls. (Program Notes by Alfred Publishing Company) Kilauea (2005)
Brian Balmages b. 1975
Kilauea conveys all the awesome power of an active volcano! A peaceful opening section gradually builds into a cacophony of sound through the use of interesting musical effects and percussion. Brief aleatoric passages engage the students' creativity as they "choose a note" to depict various stages of a volcanic eruption. Energetic and forceful, this piece is sure to be an audience pleaser. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages)
Night of the Dark Horse (2016)
John Herndon b. 1985
The term "dark horse" originated in horse racing describing an unknown entry, but also carries the connotation of an unknown underdog in politics or sports. Composed in a lively 6/8 time and using a single brisk tempo throughout, it take the listener on an energetic musical journey dedicated to the efforts of unlikely winners everywhere. (Program Notes by Hal Leonard Publishing Company) Simple Dreams (2016)
Rob Romeyn b. 1961
Beautiful and expressive, this piece begins softly as a memorable melody is introduced. The melody is then developed amid varied textures leading to a dramatic crescendo and a soaring full ensemble. The music then subsides, ending as it began with just a whisper and a touching spell of a dream no one will want to break. (Program Notes by Rob Romeyn) Panthera Pardus (2017)
Chad Heiny b. 1980
Panthera Pardus (the leopard) is a work for young percussion ensembles that, through musical energy and orchestration, attempts to represent the many traits of the animal. As the leopard is noted for its strength, speed, and cunning, the composition uses three distinct sections and moods to musically portray this magnificent animal. (Program Notes by Chad Heiny) Thrill Ride (2019)
Brian Balmages b. 1975
Fear, anxiety, adrenaline, and a sheer rush of excitement all take center stage in this musical roller-coaster ride. Percussion simulates the sound of the lift hill before the ride takes off in an action-packed series of drops, turns, and loops. Eventually the riders get their hands up in the air, reveling in unabashed joy before the car coasts to a stop. (Program Notes by Brian Balmages)
