PROGRAM NOTES Afterburn (2009)
Randall D. Standridge b. 1976
Afterburn seeks to capture the emotions of flight in a supercharged jet plane: excitement at takeoff; awe at the beauty of the earth; and an adrenaline burst of joy when the afterburners kick in. An exciting musical ride for bands that is not to be missed! (Program Notes by JW Pepper Sheet Music Company) Alpha Bravo Niner (2011)
Drew Morris b. 1984
Alpha Bravo Niner is a reference to the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, a set of words used to stand for the letters of an alphabet in oral communication. A spelling alphabet is used to spell parts of a message containing letters and numbers to avoid the confusion of similar sounding numbers and letters. For example, the sounds of "n" and "m" or "f" and “s" can be easily misinterpreted; confusion increases if static or other interference is present. The message "proceed to map grid DH98" could be transmitted as "proceed to map grid Delta-Hotel-Niner-Ait". Using "Delta" instead of "D" avoids confusion between "DH98" and "BH98" or "TH98". The unusual pronunciation of certain numbers was designed to reduce confusion as well. (Program notes by Rick Schadt) Shadows Unleashed (2013)
Brian Balmages b. 1975
The dark and mischievous world of shadows is painted in a vivid musical picture. The flutes ominously introduce the shadow theme, which develops into a ritualistic dance. Erupting out of the darkness, the driving music continues feeding on itself as it moves to a dramatic finish. (Program Notes by JW Pepper Sheet Music Company)
Jungle Dance (2011)
Brian Balmages b. 1975
Jungle Dance is a new type of piece for me. It depicts a celebration in the middle of a jungle. It is not specific to people -- it actually represents the celebration of all living things -- animals, plants, and people-- all coming together in a high energy celebration of life and nature. The melody itself is quite infectious and is treated as a passacaglia... The melody repeats constantly while the textures, rhythms and harmonies around it change and develop. (Program notes by Brian Balmages) Gotham 1940 (2020)
Clif Walker b. 1973
Gotham 1940 is written to depict the mysterious and dangerous city, Gotham, in which the superhero Batman existed. A slow, steady, and sullen piece, the music gradually builds to a climax of triplet, march-like rhythms and dissonant harmonies. Walker also includes a host of auxiliary percussion instruments like brake drums, granite blocks, a flexatone, a bell tree, and a bevy of cymbals, which reflect the hard, crime-ridden, and industrial nature of Gotham City. (Program Notes by Clif Walker) Creed (1988)
William Himes b. 1943
A creed is a statement of belief. This piece, while not literally programmatic, seeks to convey a sense of affirmation and trust - those ideals considered to be the basis of humanity. The result is music which is descriptive and atmospheric, conjuring a variety of moods ranging from reflection to exultation. (Program Notes by William Himes)
