Program Notes Begin Transmission (2016)
John Herndon (b. 1985)
Begin Transmission is intended to be an exciting first adventure into the world of percussion ensemble music for groups with approximately one year of experience. It provides opportunities for students to apply skills and concepts which they have been developing by working out of method books in a percussion ensemble setting. Most players get to experiment with different timbres by either playing on the rim of their drum or by switching instruments. This begins preparing them for more advanced literature and provides some diversity to the composition. (Program notes by Tapspace Publishing Company) Disguised (2020)
Clif Walker (b. 1973)
Things are not always what they seem. Disguised is a study in manipulating the listener’s perception of where meter and time fall, while also an exercise in masking the conventional sounds of common percussion instruments to create new colors. For example, the marimba players use mutes over the bars to “disguise’’ the sound of the marimba, and the vibraphones are sometimes played with finger cymbals rather than mallets. The piece also utilizes an electronic audio soundscape that not only provides a supporting sonic backdrop but interjects with additional manipulated sounds. (Program notes by Clif Walker) Winterland (2020)
Brian Slawson (b. 1956)
Winterland, an ensemble piece for young percussionists, is a cheerful and festive musical offering that will get any listener into the holiday spirit. In addition to standard instruments like glockenspiel, chimes, marimba, and timpani, the piece features a myriad of fun, toy-like instruments that all players are required to switch to midway through the piece. Fun instruments like slapstick, bell tree, castanets, a train whistle, and sleigh bells not only engage the players but help capture the spirit of the season. (Program Notes by Tapspace Publishing Company)
Orchestrations of the Underground (2015/2017)
Toby Fox b. 1991 arr. Kirk J. Gay
Undertale is a role-playing video game created by indie developer Toby Fox. Outside of some artwork, Fox developed the entirety of the game by himself, including the script and music. The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large, secluded region under the surface of the Earth, separated by a magic barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface. Some monsters might engage the player in a fight. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. These choices affect the game, with the dialogue, characters, and story changing based on outcomes. This arrangement for percussion ensemble includes themes from “His Theme”, “Spear of Justice”, and “Meglovania”. (Program Notes by Kirk J. Gay & Wikipedia) Imminent Launch (2020)
Matt Moore (b. 1985)
Commissioned by the Hawaii Youth Percussion Ensemble, Imminent Launch is a creates the excitement and tension that build in the moments leading up to a space mission rocket launch. Its cinematic action paired with constant groove make for a thrilling experience for both performers and audience. (Program notes by C. Alan Publications & Rick Schadt)
Panthera Pardus (2017)
Chad Heiny b. 1980
Panthera Pardus (the leopard) is a work for young percussion ensembles that, through musical energy and orchestration, attempts to represent the many traits of the animal. As the leopard is noted for its strength, speed, and cunning, the composition uses three distinct sections and moods to musically portray this magnificent animal. (Program Notes by Chad Heiny)
Cygnus X (2020)
Etienne Houben (b. 1982)
In this 10-1/2 minute work for 16 percussionists, the composer was inspired by the fantasies he had as as child when he looked up at the stars in awe. What secrets are hidden behind the night sky? He linked this to the symbol of the commissioning ensemble, ‘Cecilia,’ which is the Swan, a particularly intriguing galaxy. The Galaxy Swan, Cygnus in Latin, is best known for Cygnus X-1 – a black hole. Cygnus X-1 was the first proof that black holes exist. This phenomenon is one of the greatest forces in the universe. Even light cannot escape this cosmic primal force. The piece takes the listener on a cosmic journey to the black hole through the eyes of a child. The piece divides into the following sections: Glancing at the stars Magnificent Cosmos Interstellar Journey The Black Hole beckons Bending gravity and light The Void: time and reality broken down Falling from Infinity back to reality Magnificent Cosmos: creator of the universe The Enigma remains (Program notes by Etienne Houben) Sic Semper Draconis (2019)
John Herdon (b. 1985)
Sic Semper Draconis is dragon-slaying music! Its title is a Latin phrase which means “thus always to dragons”. I first encountered phrase in The Ashtown Burials, a series of books by N.D. Wilson, and then a blog post by S.D. Smith. In that post S.D. Smith included a quotation by author G.K. Chesterton from Tremendous Trifles about the importance of stories: “Fairy tales, then, are not responsible for producing in children fear, or any shapes of fear; fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already, because he is in the world already... ...The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he has had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” (Program Notes by Tapspace Publishing Company)
On Thin Air (2020)
John Willmarth b. 1974
Composed during the COVID-19 period of quarantine, On Thin Air depicts what I imagine it would be like to fly. The music evokes a sense of gliding, breathtaking views, and soaring above the clouds. I hope the listener experiences a sense of freedom, hopefulness, and wonder. (Program Notes by John Willmarth) Max Power (2017)
Daniel Montoya Jr. (b. 1978)
On The Simpsons episode entitled “Homer to the Max,” Homer changes his name to Max Power and adopts a new, impulsive, go-getter attitude. My piece, Max Power, imagines a world in which Power is a James Bond-type character immersed in intrigue, adventure, drama, and danger. As is a staple in my Simpsons-inspired pieces, the iconic tritone melody from The Simpsons theme song is prevalent throughout the piece signaling that at the very core, Power is still Homer Simpson. (Program notes by Daniel Montoya Jr.) Episode AABF09 – “Homer to the Max” Original Air Date: February 7, 1999 Marge: You changed your name without consulting me? Homer: That’s the way Max Power is, Marge… decisive, uncompromising, and rude! Homer: Kids, there’s three ways to do things. The right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way! Bart: Isn’t that the wrong way? Homer: Yeah, but faster! Homer (singing): Max Power… He’s the man, whose name you’d love to touch. But you mustn’t touch. His name sounds good in your ear. But when you say it you mustn’t fear. Cuz his name can be said by anyone! (Excerpts from “Homer to the Max” written by John Swartzwelder)

About Our Cause The Mukwonago Food Pantry’s Mission The Mukwonago Food Pantry's mission is to provide food and support to individuals and their families and to facilitate their development. We maintain that all individuals and families should have adequate food for their needs and that no one in the communities we serve should be allowed to sacrifice nutrition regardless of their circumstances. We are a resource providing direct on site programs that focus on helping recipients to overcome the obstacles that led them to seek help. Services and resources offered by other agencies that will aid our clients are offered on an as needed basis. How it all began… Mukwonago Food Pantry was founded by Dorothy Stanke, Debra Hoppe and Cynthia Eggleston who saw a need in our community and found a way to address it. The doors opened on August 1, 1989 in the basement of Clara Martin’s house on South Rochester Street. We soon outgrew the Martin’s home and moved temporarily to Washington Avenue School. From there we moved to 110 Main, on the village square, where again, ever-growing community support forced us to find a larger “home”. This time the former library building at 219 Grand Avenue would be our last stop before moving into our own building. Ground was broken in February 2002, for our beautiful facility at 325 Eagle Lake Avenue. Overwhelming support from professionals, contractors, groups, organizations, and individuals made it possible to open the doors of our new home on August 1, 2002. What started out as a way to provide temporary assistance to people who often were choosing between keeping warm and keeping a roof over their heads or putting food on their tables has become what the Hunger Task Force refers to as “a model food pantry”. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has made this possible through donations of food, household items, money, time, and talents. None of this would have been, or could continue to be possible, without your support.
