Program Notes Passage to Infinity (2018)

Ray Flores (b. 1978)

Intriguing and thinly scored, Passage to Infinity offers well-crafted texture and an atmosphere perfectly reflective of the title. It is driven by a woodblock ostinato resembling a ticking clock that combines perfectly with the crisp timbres of the melody and accompanying unpitched percussion. (program notes from JW Pepper ) Jungle Shadows (2016)

Brian Bailey

With grooves and melodies that will excite intermediate percussion ensembles, Jungle Shadows gets dark and primal. This one puts your players and audience in the thick of it, and they won't want to leave! (program notes from JW Pepper ) Air Force One (2011)

Chris M. Bernotas b. 1969

Air Force One evokes the proud spirit that is symbolized by the Presidential aircraft. With its rhythmic drive and uplifting melody, this will quickly become a favorite of your students and audience alike. Every section of the band will keep busy as they take flight in this piece. (program notes by the composer) Drive (2008)

Mark Williams (1955-2008)

The title tells you all you need to know about this selection! Rhythmic energy motivates this piece and blues-influenced harmonies just scream with excitement! The feelings of forward motion created by repeated ostinato patterns and powerful open fifth chords all contribute to the unique strength of this selection. (program notes from JW Pepper)

Where Worlds End… (2019)

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976

Sometimes, music is not “about” anything. It exists solely for the beautiful sounds it creates and the emotions derived from that aesthetic experience.Where Words End… falls firmly into this category of music. This expressive piece makes creative use of the ranges and colors available for young bands to create a truly remarkable new work for students and directors alike. “Where words end, music begins…” (program notes by the composer) John Williams: Movie Adventures (1999)

John Williams b. 1932 arr. Michael Sweeney

In a career spanning five decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all eight Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone, and The Book Thief. His 40-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, and Lincoln. (Program notes by The San Antonio Symphony) John Williams: Movie Adventures is a medley that captures the excitement of several of Williams’ biggest hits, including “Star Wars” (Main Theme), “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Theme from “Jurassic Park”, and Theme from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. (Program notes by Hal Leonard Corporation)
