Program Notes Winter Winds (2021)

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976

Winter Winds is a secular winter piece that paints a portrait of a snowy landscape, with the hissing of the wind heard from the wind players. The joyful mood celebrates the arrival of winter season. This work utilizes the first six notes that are taught to beginning band students, with two optional endings…the “long version” includes one accidental (so, 7 notes technically), but the “short” ending sticks to the original six, making this work flexible enough for beginners of any situation. (Program Notes by Randall D. Standridge) The Lost Tomb (2010)

Sean O’Loughlin b. 1972

Young performers will feel like they're leading the audience on a dangerous adventure, searching for treasure in an ancient, newly discovered tomb. Beginning with an air of mystery, the music shifts into an aggressive up-tempo theme with a foreboding sound. The thick chords and bold percussion statements maintain the menacing feeling from beginning to end. (Program Notes from J.W. Pepper) Multitasker (2011)

Ralph Hicks b. 1976

Multitasking is a skill we all need in this day and age. How else can we simultaneously watch the burgers and dogs on the grill, toast the buns in the oven, slice up the fixin’s on the cutting board AND keep an eye on the game? There will be a time when a percussionist is asked to multitask - in other words, to play more than one instrument at once. This is commonly known as a “multiple percussion part”, (or simply a “multi” part). Multitasker introduces this concept, giving all performers the the chance to play two instruments at once. (Program Notes by Ralph Hicks)

Santa the Barbarian (2021)

Randall D. Standridge b. 1976

As I have stated before, I often suffer from an overactive imagination. This is not precisely true, as I don’t really suffer…I enjoy all of the strange ideas that my mind comes up with. And I have the perfect ace in the hole, too, as any time someone asks me to explain myself, I simply say, “I’m artistic.” But, I digress… During my career as a composer, I have written a multitude of Christmas works. These are always quite challenging, as you have two factors working against from the outset. One, you are dealing with a very limited amount of recognizable material, as you can only use works that are in the public domain, and two, you are writing in an over-populated genre in which almost every conceivable combination of holiday tunes has been plumbed to death. The challenge, then, is to find a new angle that puts a different spin on well loved holiday classics. Enter Santa the Barbarian. In this work, I have reimagined the jolly old elf as a warrior of the winter wastes. The familiar tunes of Up on the Housetop and Jingle Bells are transformed into a war cry for this incarnation of Santa, as he navigates the snowy desert with his eight mighty reign-deer: Basher, Danger, Lancer, Victim, Bomb-it, Brutis, Runner, and Blitz-Them. On Christmas night, he fights his way across the unforgiving terrain in time to bring toys to all the good children, leaving a path of destruction and candy cane carnage in his wake. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from me to you and yours!! (Program Notes by Randall D. Standridge) Journey Through the Void (2013)

Tim Fischer

Journey Through the Void has two connotations for me. The fi rst is space, with a crew about to embark on a Star Trek-eque voyage of discovery. The second connotation is of going caving. In both instances, the journey begins with a sense of trepidation. You are faced with brooding darkness. What lies beyond, hidden in that darkness? Then you begin and trepidation is overtaken by excitement. The unknown is now a thrilling, exhilarating voyage of discovery. You press ever onwards towards your destination. But what will the journey’s end bring- triumph or disaster? (Program notes by Tim Fischer)

Minka’s Sleigh Ride (2007)

Pierre La Plante b. 1943

“Minka” is an old Ukrainian/Cossack folk song that has survived the test of time and even found favor with classical composers the likes of Weber, Hummel, and Beethoven. Beethoven arranged many folk songs for voice, including “Schone Minka,” as it is often referred to, and wrote a set of Variations for Flute or Violin and Piano (Op. 107, No. 7). Free translated, a few lines of “Schone Minka” reads: Lovely Minka, I must leave. Oh, don’t you feel the anguish... On the mountain, in the groves, I call for you... (Program notes by Pierre La Plante) Follow Suit (2011)

Ralph Hicks b. 1976

Percussion literature is constantly yielding new and exciting combinations of instruments, styles, and sounds. Who knew scratching the cap from a can of spray paint across a tam-tam would sound so cool? Who came up with lowering a single crotale into a bowl of water? Gone are the days when there was only one way to play each instrument. Follow Suit is a high-energy piece aimed at introducing “out of the box” playing techniques beyond those taught on pad or keyboard. By focusing on dampening techniques and the use of the hands to achieve different sounds (either by themselves or on the instruments), the piece should help open your students eyes (and ears) to the endless realm of sonic possibilities that exist! (Program Notes by Ralph Hicks)

Selections from The Polar Express (2004)

Glen Ballard (b. 1953) & Alan Silvestri (b. 1950) arr. Michael Story

The Polar Express is a 2004 American computer-animated Christmas musical fantasy film co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the 1985 children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. It tells the story of a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, sees a mysterious train bound for the North Pole stop outside his window and is invited aboard by its conductor. The boy joins several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas. The favorite titles included in this winter medley include: "The Polar Express," "When Christmas Comes to Town," "Hot Chocolate," "Believe" and "Spirit of the Season." MHS Band Auditions Auditions for the MHS Band Program are just around the corner! Parents, please encourage your students to audition. MHS Band Audition Frequently Asked Questions Does my student have to audition to be in band at MHS? No, but we strongly encourage all students to take an audition. This allows instructors to see your student’s musical skills and ensure that they are placed in an ensemble that will help them best develop and grow as a musician. If a student does not audition they are placed in Concert Winds or Concert Percussion. How do I know if my student is good enough to audition? All students should take an audition regardless of their ability level. This helps us get to know your student musician and ensures that they are in an ensemble that best fits their musical skills and goals. How does my student audition/what are the requirements? A detailed informational handout including a link to our online audition sign up will be emailed out to families after this concert. Audition excerpts along with hard copies of the informational handout are available in the PVMS and MHS Band Rooms. When are auditions? Auditions will take place on January 21st & 24th - see the informational handout and link to the online sign up for more information. MHS Band Classes • Concert Winds/Concert Percussion - open ensemble. No audition required. Compare workload/rigor to normal academic classes/JV2 athletic teams. • Symphonic Band - mid-level ensemble.
