Sammy Nestico is one of the most famous jazz composers and arrangers. He wrote for the world famous Count Basie Orchestra and the U.S. Air Force’s Airmen of Note and has collaborated on recording projects with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn and others. Front Burner is one of Nestico’s more accessible charts for young jazz performers but the dynamic contrast layered over a steady shuffle groove gives it a classic Nestico feel. In this piece we worked on: playing in the shuffle style and with good intonation during unison and harmony moments. All the Things You Are comes from the famous writing duo Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern—best known for their musicals “Show Boat”, “Sweet Adeline” and “Music in the Air”. The lyrics to the song are: You are the promised kiss of springtime That makes the lonely winter seem long You are the breathless hush of evening That trembles on the brink of a lovely song You are the angel glow that lights a star The dearest things I know are what you are Some day my happy arms will hold you And some day Ill know that moment divine When all the things you are, are mine Sweeney’s arrangement changes this classic swing tune to a mix of Latin and swing providing a challenge for younger players. In this piece we worked on: performing Latin styles of jazz and changing between swing and Latin within one piece.

Program Notes Blues in the Closet was originally written by jazz pianist Bud Powell in 1958. In Taylor’s arrangement the melody is given to the trombones and tenor saxophones—two instruments that aren’t always featured in high school jazz charts. Later on, the whole saxophone section is featured in a finger flying soli that is sure to get you up out of your seat.

In this piece we worked on: dynamic balance and contrast, entering on upbeats, and crisp articulations. Bendetta is perhaps the most challenging piece this group has played yet. It is a piece that is full of contrasts: duets vs. full ensemble playing and simple melodic ideas vs. complex rhythmic patterns. But it is all united by an ostinato (repeated melodic/rhythmic pattern) in the bass guitar and piano that we come back to throughout the piece.

Special Thanks MASD Board of Education Shawn McNulty, MASD Superintendent Mary Koski, Curriculum and Instruction Darren Clark, Director of Business Affairs Nick Reichhoff, Director of Employee & Instructional Services Jim Darin, Principal Lou Pawella, Mark Blodgett, Ron Schlicht, Assistant Principals Andy Trudell, Activities Director Dean Kovnesky, Head Custodian Charlotte Kolby, MHS Choir Director

In this piece we worked on: performing complex sixteenth note rhythms, phrasing simple melodies, and creating balance between harmonic and melodic voices.

Roxanne Carloni and Dale Wimer, MHS Orchestra Directors Jenny Peterson, PVMS Band Director Nyla Clements, Ben Warrichariet, Angela Hudy,

Basie Straight Ahead is quintessential Nestico. Featuring a swinging saxophone soli, piano licks that could have been improvised by the Count himself, and the full on big band swing that dominated the 50s, this piece has it all. Get ready to get your toes tapping as this fast swing kicks off the last set of our concert!

and Marie Van Maastricht, MES Band Directors JoAnn Barkley, District Printing Mukwonago Band Boosters and MFAB

Rick Schadt

In this piece we worked on: upper range in the brass, maintaining a swing style even at very fast tempos, and creating a full big band sound. Due to copyright and privacy laws: You may not publicly display or post recordings (YouTube, etc.) of any part of this program.

MFAB Thank You

Program Notes

MFAB would like to thank all of its members for their contributions to the Fine Arts programs within the MASD.

Oclupaca was written by Duke Ellington, a contemporary of Count Basie, who was instrumental in the formation of big band music and jazz as we know it today. Oculpaca is a part of Duke’s Latin American Suite. Most commonly today the woodwind section of the jazz ensemble is a combination of alto, tenor, and bari saxophones. However in earlier jazz and in this piece, the clarinet is featured as a jazz instrument. This additional timbre (pronounced tam-ber) adds a new sound to the section and creates a mysterious feeling. This piece transitions to an out and out swing before returning to the original Latin style.

In this piece we worked on: extreme contrasts in dynamics, transitioning between Latin and swing styles, and creating balance in the rhythm section. Got Blues is a fun shuffle chart with a deceptively simple melody that will stick in your ear all the way home. Although not specifically featured, the bari saxophone part mirrors that of the bass guitar, providing a challenge for this player in addition to a bass line that dominates the piece. In this piece we worked on: triplet rhythms and playing with a full sound throughout musical phrases.

Sister Sadie was originally composed by famous jazz pianist, Horace Silver and is a standard in jazz repertoire today. Kidd’s arrangement features the saxophones throughout the piece from a “kick down the door” opening to a fast moving soli section that demonstrates the full range of the instrument. In between are short licks by the brass section featuring the trumpets on plunger mutes. In this piece we worked on: “ghosted” notes, performing an up tempo swing, and playing with a full sound.
