PROGRAM NOTES Festive Prelude is a fanfare-style piece that works great as a concert opener. Written in the ABA style, the melody is first presented by the trumpets and then played as a round between the high and low brass. In middle, or B section, of the piece the flutes and clarinets take over with a second theme, equally lyrical but more legato and fluid in sound. The end of the piece features a rich harmonic texture and the final statement of our initial melody.

In this piece, the Symphonic Band worked on performing tempo changes, playing with a full and supported sound, and exaggerating their dynamics. _________________________________________________________ Carrickfergus, was arranged by Patrick Roszell in honor of his grandmother, Annie Laura (Robertson) Hazel. He had this to write about the piece: “Carrickfergus” is an Irish folksong named after the town of Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland. The origins of the song are unclear, but it has been traced back to an old Gaelic son, “There was a Noblewoman,” circa 1745. The Irish lyrics were about a man in a bawdy and humorous ditty. By contrast the English lyrics are nostalgic. Historians suggest “Carrickfergus” may have evolved from these two separate songs, which would explain why it doesn’t have a consistent narrative. In this piece, the Symphonic Band worked on performing off beat eighth notes, creating blend and balance, playing fast sixteenth notes and supporting their sound and tone even when playing at a quiet dynamic. _________________________________________________________ Fanfare for the Common Man was originally written by Aaron Copland, the famous 20th century composer. The piece was originally written for four French horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, tam-tam (gong), and bass drum. Longfield has re-orchestrated the piece for concert band, however we have tried to stay true to Copland’s sparse instrumentation by performing this work as a chamber ensemble. In this piece, this chamber ensemble worked on intonation, independence in performance, and chamber style playing.

PROGRAM NOTES Blue and Green Music was composed by Samuel Hazo and he wrote this about the piece:

MFAB Membership Application Name: ___________________________________ Address: _________________________________ _________________________________

“Blue and Green Music” is based on artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s 1921 painting of the same name. As O’Keeffe explained, [Blue and Green Music] is painted upon ‘the idea that music could be translated into something for the eye’. My job would be to translate it back into something for the ear. The entire piece is based on one theme that is varied into numerous alternate treatments. Although I tried to make certain parts of the music tie to specific aspects in the painting, I do not want the ‘observer/listener’ to be influenced by my decision. In fact, the more I go over the composition, the more I can see many different match-ups of musical and visual textures.” In this piece, the Wind Ensemble worked on musical phrasing, balance and blend, and communication in performance. ____________________________________________________ Dances with Winds is our second chamber piece of the evening and a true challenge for the musicians on stage. Although it is a three movement work, we chose to focus on the two most contrasting movements in the piece. The second movement, “The Irish Star” is based on “Star of the Country Down”, a well-known folk song. The third movement, “Serbian Dance” is a “kolo” or very fast folk dance. In both cases, the woodwind parts are incredibly technically challenging while the brass alternate between accompaniment and melody. In this piece, this chamber ensemble worked on reading and playing music of a collegiate level, chamber ensemble performance, and musicality.

Sunburst was a piece I found in late December and although I knew I didn’t have room for it on the March concert, I knew we had to perform it before the year was out. It features a gorgeous melody introduced by the low brass and beautiful countermelodies in the saxes and French horns. As the piece transitions from its brilliant opening to its more lyrical middle section to the final return of the melody, it truly feels as if Morales has captured the experience of the sun bursting through the clouds at the end of the storm. In this piece, the Wind Ensemble worked on syncopated rhythms, intonation, consistent articulation, phrasing. ____________________________________________________

Danse Bohemian is a rousing piece inspired by the styles of can-cans, gallops, and quick-steps. The piece features the xylophone player and allows us to showcase the talents of one of our senior members. We had a fun time gradually getting the piece all the way up to tempo. It’s one of the fastest pieces on our concert and we hope you enjoy it as much as we had. In this piece, the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band worked on performing music at very fast tempi, consistent articulations, and ensemble balance.
