Please don’t wear our clothes... we’ll pay you

First look: Alexa Chung for Madewell

Britain’s most famous it-girl previously tweeted that her second line for the hip clothing brand would be a mix of 1970s and 1990s influences, and now fans can see for themselves in the just-released ad campaign. In the three visuals released so far, the model and TV presenter wears a blouse printed with palm trees, a long-sleeved lace top with denim hot pants, and a woolen sweater, all set against an Americana roadtrip background. According to People magazine, the collection was “inspired by girls in bands,” staying true to Chung’s often festival-esque looks. The range will become available in stores and online on September 22. madewell.com

Abercrombie & Fitch has offered to pay Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino, a character in hit reality show “Jersey Shore,” to stop wearing its clothes, fearing its image is being tarnished. The offer includes other members of the MTV show’s brash, foul-mouthed, spray-tanned Italian-American cast, and A&F is “urgently waiting a response,” the US fashion retailer said in a statement. The weight-lifting, tight-abbed Sorrentino could have walked straight out of one of A&F’s racy ads, which often feature well–toned young models, but the company wants nothing to do with him. “We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino’s association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image,” an A&F spokesman said in the statement, titled “A Win-Win Situation.” “We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans. “We have therefore offered a substantial payment to Michael ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and the producers of MTV’s The Jersey Shore to have the character wear an alternate brand. We have also extended this offer to other members of the cast, and are urgently waiting a response.” “Jersey Shore” first aired in 2009 and follows the adventures of eight young Italian-Americans on the Atlantic coast of the US state of New Jersey as they party all night, fight and drink themselves silly. Sorrentino, a 29-year-old former model, often lifts his shirt to show off his six-pack in the show, flashing his underwear’s A&F logo. The fourth season of “Jersey Shore” is currently being filmed in Florence, Italy with the first episode earlier this month pulling in a record 8.8 million viewers. The show recently spawned a spin-off in Britain set in and around the northeastern city of Newcastle and entitled “Geordie Shore” after the nickname given to the people of the region.

Marc Jacobs to Dior, Phoebe Philo to Vuitton?

Much has been speculated since Dior’s creative head John Galliano fell from grace due to an anti-Semitism scandal five months ago, and everyone from Azzedine Alaia to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci has been named as a potential replacement in the process. But when respected trade publication Women’s Wear Daily adds water to the rumor mill, it is usually an entirely diffrent story in terms of credibility: Monday’s paper reads that according to an anonymous source, Marc Jacobs is entering negotiations with the house this week. In addition to designing his namesake collections, Jacobs has been the head designer at Dior’s fellow LVMH brand Louis Vuitton since 1997 – a spot that would be filled by Phoebe Philo, credited for reinventing Celine, another LVMH label, according to WWD. Who ends up where after the designer shuffle will be decided by LVMH head Bernard Arnault, who in 2003 stated that: “Had I hired Marc Jacobs for Dior and John Galliano for Louis Vuitton, it would not have worked as well for both brands, even though both designers are geniuses of their own.” Dior will show its spring/summer collection during Paris fashion week in October. &) $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Galliano: Kate Moss wedding dress was ‘rehab’

John Galliano, the flamboyant fashion designer who fell from grace after an anti-Semitic outburst in Paris, has said making supermodel Kate Moss’ wedding gown this summer was his “creative rehab. Galliano, long a favorite of arguably the most sought-after model in the world, has been an outcast since a rant in a Paris bar led to him being sacked in February as Christian Dior’s creative director and put on trial. He also was dismissed from his eponymous label, majority owned by Dior. In the September issue of Vogue US, Galliano says that dressing Moss reawakened his creative powers, following treatment for addiction to drink, valium and sleeping pills in the United States and Switzerland. “She dared me to be John Galliano again, the Gibraltar-born and London-bred designer was quoted as saying in his first post-trial comments. “I couldn’t pick up a pencil. It’s been my creative rehab. Moss said she commissioned her old friend to create the dress for her July wedding to rocker Jamie Hince in England because his outfits made her happy. The white dress combined an understated classic look with a slightly translucent skirt. When I put the dress on, I’m really happy. I forget everything, Moss said. At the party, Moss’ father Peter thanked Galliano for the “beautiful dress and every guest stood to applaud, Vogue’s reporter said. “John’s eyes well up, the blow-by-blow report noted. Widely regarded as one of the finest fashion designers of his generation, Galliano faces a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a fine $32,000 if convicted of making anti-Semitic insults, which are illegal in France. Sentencing is on September 8.

Fred Perry to follow through with Amy Winehouse collection

The British clothing brand has announced it will release the two ranges that the late singer designed prior to her death. Having said earlier that it would only go ahead after consulting with Winehouse’s family, Fred Perry issued a statement saying that next year’s spring and fall collections would both be made available. Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse, stated: “When Fred Perry came to us to ask what we would like to do with the new collection it was natural to continue...Amy loved working on both collections, and would want them to be made available. All the money we make and the donation that Fred Perry will give will go straight into to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which we are setting up to help children and young people in her name. The collections are expected to again carry the singer’s signature 1950s–inspired rockabilly vibe. “Amy was passionate and dedicated to the collaboration, and her signature style is clearly stamped across each piece, Fred Perry said. fredperry.com

London overtakes New York as top fashion capital

According to a new survey by internet tracking company, the Global Language Monitor, the British capital takes the reign thanks to fashion’s most prominent pairing in years: Princess Kate and Alexander McQueen. Based on a ranking that tracks mentions on the internet, New York had ruled supreme in past years, but 2011 seems to be the end of the “Sex and the City era, making room for the Duchess of Cambridge’s royal style, which first came to the world’s attention thanks to her McQueen wedding dress. “We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars, Princess Kate and Alexander McQueen can have upon a global ranking. Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York, said Bekka Payack, the Manhattan-based fashion correspondent of the Global Language Monitor. “ London and New York are followed by Paris, Milan, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong. Barcelona, Singapore, Tokyo and Berlin are also featured in the top ten. For the full ranking: visit languagemonitor.com. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ &*

William and Kate debut as wedding dolls Prince William and his bride Catherine reappeared in their wedding outfits Thursday as miniature dolls of the royal couple hit the shop shelves in London. William, now also the Duke of Cambridge, is dressed in his scarlet Irish Guards colonel uniform, while his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, is in her white wedding dress as they were on their April 29 wedding day. The dolls, made by British firm Arklu, went on sale at Hamleys toy emporium in central London. The miniature replicas are “instantly recognisable and, some might say, delightfully kitsch, Arklu said. They might be “a touch eccentric, but such quirkiness is also a great British tradition! The Catherine doll includes her earrings, tiara, engagement and wedding rings, bridal bouquet, shoes, and “something blue knickers, which bear the designer’s “signature ribbons and attention to detail in “a sweet and lovely child-like version. William has his cap under his right arm and has been given some black and shocking pink socks, while his shoes have a W stamped in them, following reports that William marked his shoes to avoid mixing them up with his brother Prince Harry’s. The boxed set of both dolls costs $160, while single Catherine dolls cost $80. There are no separate William dolls. A one-pound donation goes to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The couple launched a lifeboat near their home on Anglesey, northwest Wales, in their first official joint engagement.

Terry Richardson to publish new book of Lady Gaga ‘as never seen before’

When Madonna was photographed by Steven Meisel for 1992’s Sex, the book sold more than half a million copies and became an instant classic despite its provocative nature. Chances are that a new tome by Gaga-who is often compared to Madonna–and Richardson will at least parallel that success. Hitting stores on November 22, Lady Gaga (Grand Central Books) will feature more than 350 never-seen-before photos of the megastar – a selection from around 100,000 images taken by the controversial photographer who followed Gaga’s every step for ten months. A release by the publisher says that Richardson accompanied the singer everywhere from the Lollapalooza Festival last August to her infamous arrival in an egg at this year’s Grammy Awards and the final shows of her “Monster Ball tour. “It will be one of the most stunning, provocative and coveted books of the 2011 holiday season, Grand Central writes, ...nothing was off limits. The book can be pre-ordered for $35.46 on amazon.com.

Shoe-per Star Sergio Rossi in Qatar Be seduced by Sergio Rossi’s beautiful shoes at the new boutique located in Parcel 1 at the Pearl Qatar. Seen on the feet of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, women around the globe turn to Sergio Rossi to make them feel sexy and powerful. Sergio Rossi began creating shoes with his father in the 1950s, and quickly caught the attention of Versace and the rest of the fashion world who appreciated his creations for their shapes and detail. Today, creative director Francesco Russo brings his interpretation of the modern seductress to Sergio Rossi. Designed in line with their stores across the world, the Qatar store is elegant yet exciting, with cages alongside plush sofas, exuding the combination of old-world Italian artistry with inspiring creativity behind every pair of shoes. With shoes on gold platforms, and cascading from the walls, every creation is perfectly highlighted. With a wide selection of signature pieces, day and evening collections, the store caters to women who appreciate sensuous luxury regardless of age, and we found some stand-out pieces from their signature, day and evening collections that we had to share with you! Our animal instinct took us straight to the high heels, wedges, flats, bags and boots in pony hair with a tiger print. The combination of the luxurious texture of pony hair with an animal print was unexpected, and we were spoilt for choice with the range of silhouettes. Renowned for their stunning evening collection, the ‘Sirena’ booties finished with crystal details reflects every one of the minimum 120 steps taken to create a pair of Sergio Rossi shoes. The iconic Sergio Rossi butterfly adorns a bag and ankle tie-up heels, in a classic combination of gold and black. The butterfly motif is reinvented by Sergio Rossi every season, and this shoe is one of the region’s favourites. We managed to get a sneak peek into the collection coming into stores this September, and Sergio Rossi outdoes itself once again with a collection inspired by Venetian carnivals, so be sure to visit this store for the most unique array of accessories. Pretty floral prints were huge for Spring/Summer and the good news is that the trend continues. Flowers were seen at Lanvin, Kenzo and Louis Vuitton, but gone were the pop colours and neons of summer, and in their place shades of black, burgundy and green hues.

Merchandising Manager at Mathaf: Arab museum of Modern Art I’m investing in a pair of luxury brown leather boots because they look fabulous with skirts, dresses, pants and leggings. They can be dressed up or down and the colour is a great alternative to black.

Fashion Designer and Co-Founder of Nomad* (nomadstyle.tumblr.com) I’ll be buying something with a colour block, maybe a dress with bold colours, kind of like an updated Yves Saint Laurent “Mondrian” dress. I love colour!

Manal Zeidan

Rebecca Parker

Communication Manager at Leo Burnett I’m definitely getting an aviator jacket in black or dark red; very in this season, stylish, simple and can be worn with anything. Let’s just hope it gets cold enough in Doha to wear it!

International Beauty Lecturer, Tajmeel, Qatar International Beauty Academy The trend I’m following this A/W is pleats, from sheer pleated maxi to midi skirts. Seen on the Chloe and Lanvin catwalks in spring, they remain a statement piece which can be dressed up or down and feel romantic or edgy.

The city’s fashion addicts reveal what trends they’ll be investing in for A/W

Yousra Samir Writer and Creator of Under Your Abaya (underyourabaya.blogspot.com) I’ll be opting for the sophisticated glamour of Studio 54 as seen in the Gucci F/W 2011 collection, because it’s a more polished and grown up version of the seventies comeback trend we saw last season. I’ll be teaming pussy bow blouses in jewel colours with high waisted trousers.

Roxana Ghiassi Student This Winter I’ll be investing in the bohemian/ tailored trend of the wide leg pant and straight maxi skirt in dark rich colours like teal, rust and burgundy, together with tailored jackets with faux-fur edging focusing on loose tailored cuts.

Lauren Wheeler Sales Manager at GAC I’m all about the accessories, so this season I’ll be stocking up on statement necklaces and chunky cuffs. Throw in a couple of cute clutch bags and I’ll be pretty much set to easily transform my outfit from office chic to evening glam.

maryam al–subaiey Marketing and Coporate Communication Officer, QFCA Abaya trends change so quickly, however you can always create your own style. This winter I will upgrade my collection with new cuts and accessories. I might look for something that looks more like Jallabia with belts or ropes in the middle. I also think the abayas which come with leggings will be popular. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ (*

5:/; 4/;3 5/;3 eing catapulted into the glitzy world of fame not only brings coveted couture wardrobes, front-row seats at fashion week and adoring fans. It also brings with it media attention – possibly the most difficult aspect of fame to deal with. If it’s bad enough waking up to the occasional spot on your face, imagine having pictures of it plastered across gossip sites and tabloids, resulting in nasty comments and people making fun of you which can’t be good for anyone’s confidence, no matter how big a star. It might seem ridiculous to blame the media and celebrities on anyone developing a negative body image. Surely seeing those flawless pictures of attractive women shouldn’t make us feel bad about ourselves. Unfortunately, it does. Through television and magazines we are constantly faced with images of attractive people in positions of power and success. We start to believe that if we are not physically

perfect we will never be able to achieve a life fulfilled with success, happiness and love. The pressure of trying to live up to expectations of being physically perfect affects people in different ways, from the now confident, self loving America Ferrera to the self abusive Lindsay Lohan. For some, the negative media attention empowers then to develop strong characters but with others it forces them to cope through drug taking and self harm. Teenagers are particularly affected as during the developmental years they face many changes as well as peer pressure to fit in. They may not realise how heavily airbrushed, styled and tweaked images are. A flick through teen magazines provides page after page of slim, shiny haired models with flawless complexions. We only have to look around to see people of all types of different looks and sizes leading happy, healthy fulfilled life without looking like the latest cover girl.

HOW TO COPE

If you don’t have a strong personality, create one! Beyoncè has been dealing with fame from a very early age. Signing her first record deal at 14 she has a wealth of advice on how to cope with the media and the spotlight. For Beyoncè, keeping her public and personal personas separate really helped keep her grounded. Sasha Firece, her alter ego is very different to Beyoncè. The singer created this alter ego in an effort to overcome her shy personality and give herself the courage to take to the stage and be confident while performing. Remember that when the media launches an attack, it is not against you as they don’t know the real you at all. It is against your public image that they created in the first place, so just brush it off and focus on the words of those who really count – your friends and family.

H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ (,

Know who you are! Dakota Fanning grew up in front of the camera and has coped surprisingly well, unlike Drew Barrymore who was sadly an addict by her early teens. On her life and fame Dakota says: “I recognise that it is different from most other people. I can only live my life in this way. I don’t think I would be living it a different way if I wasn’t acting.” It’s important to maintain your own sense of identity and find an appreciation for who you really are. Develop your own sense of style in what you wear or what hairstyle you chose. Everybody has different ideas of what constitutes ‘attractive’ so always strive to be unique, not perfect.

Stay in touch with family and friends! The pressure of touring, long filming hours and public duty means that it will be very hard for you to remain geographically close to those who are closest to you. Make sure that you stay in touch via skype, phone calls and messenger services so that you are able to share the happenings in your daily life. Rihanna frequently travels home to Barbados where she partakes in local festivals and spend time with her childhood friends and family. (- $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Control the media, don’t let the media control you!

TRAGIC STARS

Paparazzi make a living out of catching you in compromising positions. Living under the public’s glare means that while in public, you will have cameras and eyes focused on you at all times, especially when you least expect it. Try to protect your privacy and avoid places where the paparazzi will be hovering such as famous nightclubs or celebrity hotspot restaurants. If you do run into them try to handle approaches by reporters and photographers calmly and politely.

The following celebrities tragically passed away UNDER similar circumstances, all aged 27.

Kurt Cobain The lead singer of Nirvana shot himself after years of cocaine addiction that he claimed was to medicate a stomach condition he had.

Amy Winehouse Sadly, last month the world lost a great talent when singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment. Hopefully people will remember her for her fantastic song writing and beautiful music, and not her troubled life. Many say that Amy’s death was a result of being subject to the pressures of fame without being properly prepared for it.

Heath Ledger In 2008 Ledger was found dead in an apartment in Manhattan, due to an overdose. He left behind a daughter Matilda Rose and a legacy of critically acclaimed roles including the Joker in Batman and Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ (.

id you have any preconceived notions about Qatar that were broken when you played here? I never have preconceived ideas before visiting a country. Qatar has such a rich culture, very nice people and great food. I really enjoyed it there. How would you describe your sense of style, on and off court? When I play tennis I wear no make-up, pull back my hair, and opt for well cut and trendy Nike Tennis dresses. To go out at night, I make sure I remove all sunscreen left from the day and wear a little bit of make-up. I tend to focus more on what I am wearing (good cuts and right pick for the occasion) than on my hair and make-up. I feel extremely lucky to have a stylist to pick some outfits and propose options they know will look good on me. Which designers’ outfits always make you feel glam? Some examples of my wardrobe staples are a casual pair of Rick Owens pants, a couple of Stella McCartney outfits and my Nike dress that I wore at the U.S. Open final in 2006. I’m currently making more and more room for vintage clothing too. You’re always ahead of the fashion game, how does it feel to be a trend setter? I feel honored that some people may see me as a trend setter. This is not the focus in my life as I rather concentrate on my tennis during the season. I just wear and design what I like, and after that, if people like it then that’s great, but it’s definitely not my obsession! What other interests do you have? I enjoy reading, designing, sketching and spending time with my friends and family, just like any other girl my age I think. However, most of my time off the courts is spent doing physical training. Your skin always looks flawless, what’re your beauty secrets? From a very young age I’ve always been very consistent in protecting my skin with sunscreen – Kanebo is a good one. As I’m blonde, I’m tempted to use hair sunscreen, but most of the time I tie my hair back and wear a cap to train. I don’t have a special beauty secret. I love spa treatments. I especially enjoy the Four Seasons Spa at Papagayo in Costa Rica, but if I am in California, I enjoy the Bacara Spa in Santa )' $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Barbara – less remote yet extremely relaxing. Who is your fashion icon? My true fashion icon is Audrey Hepburn for her classy and sophisticated style, even when dressed casually. I also admired Princess Diana for her amazing sense of style. Aside from tennis, you’re also a brand ambassador for Tag Heuer and have been involved in the process of product design, tell us about the collaboration... I’ve built very strong links with Tag Heuer over

the last six years we’ve been together. They have given me the opportunity to design watches and sunglasses, and I’ve learnt so much from these experiences because design has to be practical, feasible, and sellable. Khaleeji women care a lot about accessories, do you take a different design approach for this clientele? I’ve never really thought about it that way. I work on designs that appeal to women in general, no matter where they live or what culture they are from. I think women around the world share a

lot of basic grounds – maybe more than men. There is some sort of ‘sisterhood’ that crosses boundaries. What significant changes have been introduced to your life after a decade of professional tennis? It’s really made me who I am today and I’m so thankful for every bit of it. It’s given me the chance to travel worldwide, experience different cultures, meet fantastic people, and most importantly, it has brought me the most loyal fans I could ever dream of. @[]MeM /X BTMZU She chose fashion designing quite by accident; She isn’t a fan of shopping, and visits stores only when she absolutely must; And she shies away from fashion shows because she does not like the attention. Yet, she is one of Qatar’s brightest young designing talents. Meet Roqaya Al Thani, the designer most sought after by Doha’s fashionistas. A tètè-a-tètè with GLAM’s Sonali Raman... How did it all start? Why did you choose fashion? I started with painting at a young age. Art or design is a therapy for me. Whenever I practise any form of art, it releases all the stress and I feel happy. I moved to photography, then graphic design and fashion. I did a double major in graphic and fashion design. Graphic design has helped me a lot with making flats, working with colours and learning to combine the two. I do my own photography, my own branding and posters. It helps me to make patterns for embellishments. Actually, I didn’t want to take up fashion. When I entered VCUQ, during my freshman year I used to see Ms. Sandy (Sandra Wilkins, Chair of Fashion department, VCUQ) walking around and was very attracted by her personality. I learnt she was the head of the fashion department and thought it was her connection to fashion design that made her so fine and welcoming. I knew I wanted to be around her and that’s why I chose to study fashion and then I began to enjoy it. )) $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Before Wilkins, was there any fashion influence in your life? Before I entered VCUQ – I did a course at the Academic Bridge Program and one of the stories I read about women in business was on Coco Chanel. I really enjoyed reading her story and how she started her career with one item – hats. She started with one item and reached her goals and that was an inspiration for me. How did you launch your line? After the graduation fashion show – some girls came to me as they liked my collection and wanted me to make some pieces for them. So I started right from the fashion show! I created my page on facebook and put some images – only three or four and one of them was my ‘best–seller’ pants (she points to a pair of purple printed harem pants with large embroidered orange cuffs on her rack). I sold many pieces of those pants! Like Chanel I focussed on one item in the beginning – the ‘pants’. That’s how it all began.

Tell me a little about how you work and the creative design process you follow, what inspires you... I work backwards – I get the fabric and drape it sometimes. I don’t sketch – I like to drape. Sometimes I like to get inspirational images and put them on a mood board and then I do some draping. When an object – like in this Ramadan Collection’s Moroccan theme – inspires me, I do flats because then you see the object, and its shape – then I sketch. Who is your muse? My muse for sure is my mum. I always like to open her wardrobe and look at the vintage pieces that she has. She’s also a great support for me and I like to take her feedback on my ideas. I also like to collect vintage and costume pieces and jewellery from my culture and sometimes I use them as inspiration. I get my inspiration more from architecture and objects, not so much from fashion. I did a tailored collection inspired by the architecture of Sharq

Your favourite colour? Royal Blue and Purple Your favourite designer? I don’t have any favourite designers. Oscar De La Renta and Donna Karan perhaps because their style is simple and yet complex in their designs. Your favourite food? Italian One piece of favourite clothing in your closet? This one – what I am wearing (a beautiful white linen Jelabiya with gold trimming). I had one in knee length too, which was one of my best sellers last Ramadan. Do you have a shoe or handbag fetish? No. I like vintage jewellery – costume jewellery. Your favourite restaurant (here or internationally)? Dalloyau at the Pearl Qatar. Your favourite shopping destination? I like to go to Souq Wakif for inspirations for my designs. I don’t shop so much personally as I like to design my own clothes.

Village and Spa – the linear geometric shapes, the colour of the walls, the fabrics they used, and the sea. It inspired me to use the colour blue and the geometric pattern of the fabric. How would you describe your style? My style is more casual and comfortable. It has to have a casual look and comfy feeling. I try to combine the traditional and western cuts. I focus more on the patterns; motifs and finishing that are traditional and combine it with western cuts – to be trendier. You sell from home right now through the social networking site: Facebook. What are your plans for the future, do you plan to have your own store one day? My target clients are mostly on Facebook as I design for the young. So it’s easy to reach them. I really want to focus on design and get more experience. When I sell at other boutiques – it will be easier for me to see the reaction and improve myself. I will then look at starting

my own studio. I will be selling soon from the Impression Boutique at The Pearl Qatar. How do you see yourself driving fashion trends here in Doha? I design because I enjoy it. I don’t really think about having an effect on someone or changing anything. Maybe it has an effect on trends here, but I don’t think about it, I just enjoy what I design and do. Do you dream about showing on an international platform? I don’t really dream that far – I want to focus on design and improve myself and have a strong base and then I will think of the next step. If you see my work from when I started to now – my skills have improved, my design, the embroidery, and embellishment. I like to think about the moment! (laughs) Everything happens without me really thinking too much about it; like how fashion designing happened. I feel if you plan too much, maybe

Your favourite holiday destination? Morocco! One thing you never leave home without? My lip–gloss. A fashion faux pas you see around you? When people try to combine more than one style. Your style icon? I don’t have one. I like to see different people. But I always get my inspiration from my mother and her closet as she has vintage pieces like from Dior and other designers. Your favourite brand or store? I like to look at everything and don’t like to limit myself to one. I like to follow Oscar De La Renta. I prefer to look online.

it won’t happen. Go with the flow and grab the right opportunity at the right moment! Now I want to focus on Qatar and then in the region, and perhaps later internationally. Tell us about your new Ramadan Collection. I love Morocco –especially the blue colour they use in some of their homes. I saw some photos and researched the cities in Morocco and decided to call my collection “Marrakesh as I was inspired by the ceramics and the souq in that city. The souq there is full of colours and the embroidery motifs are inspired by some of the images I found. I have tried to blend in the Qatari style by adding gold and silver into the embroideries. All these cultures are connected and similar and you can’t tell the difference really. I haven’t travelled to Morocco yet and want to go! All the pieces in this collection are Jelabiyas, as they are to be worn during Ramadan and summer and it should be light and comfortable. It’s too )+ $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

hot now. I have used chiffon mostly to keep the look and feel light. Do you think people in Doha are up to date with international trends and are fashionable? The Qatari people are updated with trends. But we don’t have too many opportunities like in Dubai for many designers to create our own trends. People are inspired by the western trends and are fashionable. Many people buy online so it’s easy to keep up with the trends. Tips: Just keep it simple! What are the new trends for Fall/Winter? Now you can’t tell that there will be a particular trend for a season, as you will see many trends at a time in one season. It’s difficult to predict any one trend that will be big for Fall. Last season lace and bright colours were big. I think lace will continue to be important for winter and velvet too.

Bloggers and designers across the globe share how they interpret their national dress through modern wardrobes or collections – and what representing their culture through fashion means to them. India Worn by influential Indian women from Aishwarya Rai to Sonia Gandhi, the 5000 year old Indian national dress – the saree is still a popular fashion choice for the modern Indian woman. Draped in a different way depending on each region and made from materials as varied as the pure cotton of the Keralan kasavu saree to the silk that Hermes will use in their limited edition collection of sarees this fall, the saree is a showcase of the celebrated craftsmanship of India as well as its love for the feminine form. Whilst most Indian women now save their best sarees for religious or cultural occasions, they bring into their Western wardrobes the materials of the saree and a love for hand-stitched detail. The influence of India can be seen in the designs of Doha-based designer Selina Farooqui, winner of the ‘Best Fashion Student Award’ at VCUQ , who says: “My first collection, which really jumpstarted my career as a fashion designer was a collection inspired by India. I had purchased fabrics from there – the shapes and silhouettes of the garments were inspired by India and translated into ready-to-wear. As a designer, showcasing her culture to the world is more important than just choosing what she wears everyday, “I think it’s important to be proud of where you are from, embrace your culture, and really share it with others, because what may be traditional to you, could be unique and the next new thing to another. Seen on the runaways of Paris and New York, the saree has been interpreted for Western weather in the form of the ‘surya skirt’ by Christian Dior who was inspired by the materials he saw in saree boutiques on a trip to India. Selina agrees that India’s fabrics and designs can be adapted to the present, “Although my designs are contemporary ready to wear including jackets, skirts, dresses etc, there is always a subtle ethnic touch that I think doesn’t always have to be obvious, but can even be as simple as adding an intricate button or a small hand-made embellishment.

ne of the first questions that come to mind when introduced to someone new is where they are from. An accent or name may give it away, but it is their fashion choices that instantly tell a story of their background. Whether you wear your culture on your sleeve or prefer to just wear a small personal accessory, ultimately cultural identity shapes peoples’ sartorial choices.

United Arab Emirates Today, the U.A.E’s national dress, the abaya, is a reflection of the wearer’s individual style and has certainly moved away from the plain black of the past. Never shying away from embellishment, the modern abaya is an extension of bold Khaleeji style. Creator of myfashdiary.com, London based fashion student and Dubai resident Tala Samman agrees, “Due to the love of extravagance, the Gulf has a great number of designers who crystallize and add modern touches to abayas.” The abaya inspires women like Hessa Juma, the creator behind hessjuma.blogspot.com and upand-coming designer, to create trousers and blouses using luxurious materials that exude the abaya’s elegance and like the abaya she says, “Fabrics can beautify the design when it’s well picked.” With the abaya allowing for a peek of their shoes, wrists and earrings, accessories are equally important where more-is-more is followed tastefully and gracefully. Tala says: “In the Middle East, we are inspired by colours and extravagance so I’m inspired by choosing pieces with rich colours, as well as statement accessories and jewellery that stand out.” Tala showcases her taste for statement pieces on her popular blog, featuring many up-and-coming designers reflecting the support that Middle Eastern women give to artisans around the world. Many modern Middle Eastern women have turned towards their own culture for inspiration and the influence of Arabian calligraphy can be seen in patterns on sleeves of modern abayas, as well as on accessories that celebrate this art in the form of earrings, rings or necklaces made from calligraphy designs. As some of the top customers of designers around the world, Middle Eastern women today have given personality to their all black canvas with their impeccable sense of style.

Morocco A must-have in any resort wear collection of designers like Diane Von Furstenburg and Gucci is the kaftan, and it is incorporated daily into the wardrobes of many modern Moroccan women. While the kaftan was originally made of thick fabrics, today the fashion is fitted in a modern silhouette with light materials. Ateliers in Morocco spend hours finishing kaftans with delicate gold threading or understated embroidery, producing pieces unique to each woman. Maryam Montague, a blogger (morrocanmaryam. com), writer, photographer and hotelier in Morocco incorporates the kaftan into her daily wardrobe with this same spirit of customization. “I love to re-cut vintage Moroccan kaftans so that the sleeves are narrower and bodice more slim fitting. I wear them open over long white or black jeans and with strappy jewelled sandals for drinks and dinner in the evening, she says. With traditional kaftans using fabrics from across the world, in Morocco today, this love for exotic fabrics is far from dying out. Maryam adds, “I can also be found wearing vintage clothing from elsewhere in the region. Modern interpretations of the kaftan also allow Moroccan women to stylishly follow religious beliefs in this predominantly Muslim country. Soukaina Rachidi, a Moroccan student living in the USA agrees, “Moroccan style shows me that hijabi style can be just as creative as it is modest. They are not qualities that are mutually exclusive, she shares.

Multi-layer, made-to-order, hand-made – words used to describe couture on the runaways of Paris equally describe the Japanese national dress, the kimono. This intricate multi-piece garment is meant to mimic nature in its pleats. Made from fine silks, the average kimono would set you back thousands of dollars and is now mainly reserved for formal occasions in Japan. The delicate nature of the kimono has inspired the bohemian ‘kimono jacket’, a favourite of Hollywood celebrities like Nicole Ritchie and has had a direct impact on modern Japanese style. “Layering is a very important aspect of Japanese fashion, especially street fashion. This is undoubtedly influenced by kimono, which is traditionally worn in layers. says Kjeld Duits, editor-in-chief of Japanese Streets (japanasestreets. com) the first English language fashion blog documenting Japanese street fashion. “Layering is so pervasive in Japan, that young men have now started to wear leggings below shorts. This was originally seen as feminine, but has been completely accepted by young men during the past few years. Popular stores like MUJI even sell sets of shorts and leggings in their men’s fashion section. Even few Japanese realise that this form of layering is inherited from the kimono, a garment specifically designed for women. Japanese street style is often characterised by bold fashion choices featuring unexpected clashes, revealing the influence of the kimono, explains Kjeld, “Another subtle, but important influence, is the unique Japanese way of combining colors and textures that to the eyes of people from other cultures often do not appear in balance. This is again a heritage from kimono where disparate colors and textures are combined in an extremely adventurous manner.

Philippines Featuring exaggerated shoulders long before it became fashionable, the terno, a long Filipino dress with butterfly sleeves that highlight the shoulders, is one of the most figure flattering national dresses. The terno, a relatively new creation compared to other national dresses, modernised modest Spanish influenced costumes creating sleek, figure flattering shapes. In the designs of Doha based Carla Mallari, behind ‘Cala Mari’ and the style blog Nomad* (nomadstyle.tumblr. com) shoulders are often played up using different fabrics for sleeves or the butterfly sleeve is seen in an unusual way. She uses her Filipino background for inspiration as well as to feel connected to her culture saying, “I’m inspired by my culture’s national costumes because I felt the need to get back in touch with my Filipino roots. Growing up in a very multicultural environment is great, and you learn about your friends’ different cultures, but somehow you lose your own. Several Filipino designers share this love for their country, and recently created glamourous, modern interpretations of the terno to showcase their culture and talent. The terno has even been represented internationally by Chanel, who took its butterfly sleeves and slender body and combined it with their Parisian materials. While the terno is today saved for formal occasions in the Philippines, its look has inspired Filipino women to make a statement with butterfly sleeved blouses balanced with modern tailoring in the form of short dresses or trousers. Strong shoulders are edgy, yet feminine making it so easy for Filipina women to take the terno into their wardrobes, and we think even Lady Gaga has been inspired!

Iraq Iraqi womens’ love affair with gold may have started with necessity, gold acted as insurance in case their husbands died in war, but grew to a passion they carried onto their clothes. The Arabian jalebeyah or kaftan is traditionally embroidered with delicate gold threading and accessorised with heavy gold pieces that display Iraq’s rich history. Iraq may not be the first place you think of as fashionable but its women and diaspora dress up grandly at every social occasion and wouldn’t think of leaving the house without a piece of their beloved gold. Leafing through photos of Iraqi weddings, where the husband customarily presents his wife with a set of gold, you will be amazed at how they use so much gold without appearing garish. Zubaida, creator of the popular blog, Butterhotshoes.com, recollects that her love of the glamour of this precious metal came from her grandmother and how she finds it in the high fashion that she loves today, “Gold coins incorporated in bracelets and necklaces, for example, is something my grandmother loved to wear, and now we see things like that in designers’ collections like Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana.” Zubaida effortlessly pairs her mother’s traditional Iraqi kaftans with gold accessories from Christian Louboutin and Temperley, and says, “Gold gives a very nice glamorous look to any outfit whether it is Arabian or European.” In a place where their ancient ancestors, the Sumerians, used gold even for their head dresses, gold prices are religiously monitored and investments planned ahead. But modern Iraqis no longer just rely on heavy gold ornaments to display their love, like Zubaida, they have found that they can work in their favorite Chanel, Louboutin or Temperley and still stay faithful.

South Africa In the land of the safari, there is no uniform. Instead, countless tribes and ethnicities add subtle touches that are uniquely South African to the wardrobes of these diverse women. O, The Oprah Magazine Fashion Editor and blogger Robyn Cooke explains, “With fashion influences coming from both the traditional dress of a myriad tribes as well as European settlers and American television, there is no one national dress in this amazing country.” Bright animal or tribal prints are frequently mixed with more European neutrals and Robyn tells us how they incorporate Africa into their wardrobes with “patterns, prints, bead work, feathers, shell and silhouettes that hint at Africa.” With an up-and-coming fashion week, South Africa’s young designers certainly haven’t forgotten their native prints and styles. Karen, behind Lunar Life, a designer from South African agrees, telling us that she finds that it subtly influences the way she works with fabrics and colours in her collections. “The colours of national dress play an enormous part in my reference to colour and the endless ways of putting it together. This season in particular because of the shift globally to bright happy blocks of flat colour”, she says. Native dress of the tribals in South Africa is flamboyant and creative, and young South African women have no fear of experimentation, combining flea market finds with high-end international designers. While we might think twice before pairing tribal print leggings with leopard print, South African women wear it and manage to pull it off! More inspiring than their courage in pairing prints, is the soul that they carry with whatever they’re wearing, and as Robyn so perfectly told us, “It is not the cut or the feather appliqué that makes it South African. It is the heart of the African that crafted it.” *% $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Ghana Legend says that the origin of the traditional kente cloth that is used in the national dress of Ghana came from two friends admiring the weaving of a spider’s web. Traditionally worn by royalty, kente cloth is hand woven carefully, with artisans creating one-of-a-kind pieces for every wearer using a handloom. Every colour or pattern chosen in creating kente cloth has symbolic value and named by phrases from proverbs and nature, reflecting how important this cloth is to Ghanaian women. Today, kente cloth is iconic as a symbol of the African tradition of weaving and used by designers to create colourful texture. Modern Ghanaian women like designer Adjeo Osei highlight the intricate nature of the weave by including it on simple garments like t-shirts or skirts. Adjeo is proud of her culture, and determined to introduce this versatile cloth into every woman’s wardrobe, and she tells us, “I came up with Adapt – the name of the collection because there is more than one way to wear African print. I wanted to make African print more accessible and give it the focus and spotlight that it deserves. I therefore started brainstorming around how it could be used in a way that didn’t require a ‘top to toe’ look – taking African print away from just special occasions and introducing into our weeks and weekends. For the Adapt collection, I was interested in enhancing everyday pieces with African print creating pieces that could be slipped straight into your wardrobe. This brand is aimed at anyone who appreciates well placed accents of colour and detail without compromising on their simple, clean lined staples.

Mexico A country with fashion as bold as its cuisine, in Mexico the traditional Mayan embroidery has blended with the Spanish colonial influence to make up one of the most colourful national costumes of our feature. These folklorica costumes, made up of a loose blouse and flared skirt, are heavily embroidered and use fabrics of contrasting colours and prints, reflecting the contrasting ethnicities that make up the country. From the blog covering Mexican street style, Mess this dress (messthisdress.blogspot.com), Omarov Aguilar tells us that in Mexico, “there’s such a great heritage of culture and we love to exaggerate colors or flavours. On his blog, you find how on the streets of Mexico, Mayan embroidery dresses up otherwise plain chiffon dresses or how young Mexicans interpret the colour-blocking trend using their favourite bright yellows and oranges. They even take thick materials from old ponchos and rework them into tailored blazers to dress up all black outfits. This love for culture is translating into a move towards appreciating local designers, Omarov finds that young Mexicans are starting to “wear more national brands of great emerging designers who are able to give them the colour they love every season.

s the saying goes, age is only a number, but when images of 10-year-old model Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau looking older then her years spread across the globe, it sparked absolute uproar among parents and politicians demonising the exploitation of children. The media circus that ensued eventually led Blondeau’s mother to shut down her daughter’s Facebook page to protect her from negative press. The shocking images that appeared in French Vogue showed Blondeau dressed in a rather daring outfit for a youngster, and something a model twice her age would probably be seen in. One of the shots featured her lying on a bed among leopard cushions wearing a gold revealing neckline dress with big hair and loud make-up. Blondeau started her modelling career when she was just four years old, and in her native France has been compared to a young Brigitte Bardot. There’s no denying that she is exceptionally beautiful when photographed in a childlike manner, however, with excessive make-up, scantily-clad clothes, sprawled seductively across a bed proves to be more than a little surreal.

First there was Dakota Fanning looking far beyond her years in that Marc Jacobs Lola perfume campaign, which caused many to bemoan the sexualisation of children. More recently, Dakota’s 13-year-old sister Elle jumped on the bandwagon, and modelled

Questions have been raised as to why such young girls have been chosen for shoots, and there has been widespread belief that a male-dominated fashion industry has played a contributing factor as they continually seek out girls with boyish frames, tiny

waistlines and flat chests. If you think about it, androgynous models are one of the biggest crazes and menswear for women is one of the season’s biggest trends! A7H3 B/5A( he other day I was at a popular high street fashion store and picked a pair of slim fit trousers to try in my regular size 6. Once in the fitting room I was amazed that it didn’t fit! My weighing scales couldn’t have lied to me that morning – could it? The most helpful sales assistant at the store suggested I should try the next size – “8”. “No way” I said to her – I could not possibly have grown a whole size fatter since the morning! I flatly refuse even when she tries to explain to me the difference in fitting as the style is a different cut and therefore I should perhaps try a bigger size. I then got annoyed with her and told her that I was very well aware of what size I am and that I always fit into the size 6 in that store and others. Saving face by saying that anyway I was no longer interested in that particular trouser, I flounced out of the fitting room and the store in a huff! All the way home I was making mental plans to go on a strict diet, throw my weighing scales out and get a new one and up my workout routine – not exactly in that order... How often has it happened to you? Come on – admit it! It happens all the time to all of us – does it not? It’s amazing how the size on a tag can change a person’s outlook on life and one’s attitude. You begin to blame yourself and your body for these irregularities in sizing when actually it’s the manufacturers’ inconsistency. Confusion Reigns Some stores can throw you completely off gear by trying to give you corresponding American, European and UK sizes on the tag. Believe me – this does not make it any easier on the shopper out there. At H&M I once observed a well built tall American woman pick a blouse off the rack +% $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

5:/; 075 7AAC3

By Sonali Raman

after checking the tag for her American size. On trying it she apparently faced the same problem of it not fitting. Then came a little altercation between the shop girl and the American. Stores like H&M match the sizes based on a theoretical table, which is not real. H&M being a European store makes their fits and cuts to correspond to European bodies which are much slimmer and smaller built than British or American ones. So the poor young American was not wrong when she picked a blouse with the tag saying American size 10, except that the style and cut were actually made to fit an American size 8 or even 6! A European size 36 is meant to correspond to an American 6 and UK 8, but at stores like H&M you would be better advised to take one size bigger or even two just to ensure it fits your body type correctly – if you don’t happen to be European. Don’t go crying yourself into a blue funk – this does not mean you have put on weight! Most retailers get their stocks from different manufacturers in different countries. Each of the manufacturers follow different size charts and sizing, therefore the difference. Sometimes within a store itself you would find yourself fitting into size 6 pants, size 8 blouse and perhaps a size 4 skirt! Of course it varies from one store to the next as well. America vs the Rest of the World Here’s a typical scenario: An American and a British girl go shopping together, walk into a quintessentially British store like Marks & Spencers. The American girl picks a great pair of chinos in size 6 only to find it’s a tight squeeze! She finds she needs a size 8 or even 10 in that store, leaving her in a state of panic that she has grown fatter from her “Gap size 6! Then they go to Banana Republic and the British girl pulls

a beautiful skirt off the rack in size 12. Once in the fitting room – she finds it so loose and large that she has to try other sizes and finally is so thrilled that she actually fits into the skirt two sizes smaller! This does not mean that they have both suddenly put on or lost weight, but its just a matter of body shapes and types being different across the continent and therefore the difference in sizing on the tags. Down Sizing A lot of women buy only one size, no matter if it fits or not. A lot of women believe they are a smaller size than they actually are. But this is not real – who cares if the tag says you are the biggest size sold in the store or the smallest? The media and fashion industry doesn’t help – consider Victoria Beckham – a size minus zero with a waist of 23.5 inches! A size 10 model is considered “Plus–Size by the industry. Even Crystal Renn, the “plus–size model, who was a curvy size 12 or 14, has succumbed to pressure and come down to a size 10! Since when was size 12 and 10 considered fat or as “Plus–Size? Marilyn Monroe was an American size 12! Some women’s magazines are featuring more real looking women alongside the size–zero ones, but they are still looked at as a curiosity. I would love for them to be considered normal models. Here’s where ‘vanity sizing’ comes into play. I was in a store the other day and was waiting outside the fitting room when I saw a teenage girl come out wearing a pair of tiny shorts, to show her mother. She said they were a Size Zero, but seemed a little tight. Her mother suggested she should try a size up, to be comfortable, but the teenager rolled her eyes and promptly refused! Miss Size Zero stubbornly dismissed comfort and did not want to wear a size up! Her mother rolled her eyes too and judiciously left it at that,

smiled at me shaking her head, while the sales girl was smirking on the side. If you need to try a size up, you feel like you are being told you have put on weight. A common scenario amongst not only the young, but older women too, has many retailers today starting to label larger clothes with smaller size tags. This ‘vanity sizing’ entices the customer to buy a garment because they feel flattered they fitted into a smaller size. The happy shopper leaves the store armed with the new lower size label and marches into the little cafè opposite to wolf down macaroons sans guilt! The retailer with dollar signs eagerly awaits the return of the said shopper! It is now accepted that what used to be a size 14 in terms of measurements is now a size 12 on the tag. It does have an impact on one’s self-esteem – if you can fit into a dress in the same size you did a few years back. Win-Win So in a way a size tag does make a difference. That said – no one can see the size on your clothes except you and perhaps the person that does your laundry. The size tag doesn’t determine the look of an item of clothing or how you feel in it. It’s based on how it fits and flatters your figure. I used to also get upset with the size on the tag, but now I care more about how my clothes fit me and the style and shape. Most women would on an average range between 2–3 sizes, which would vary based on type of clothing, and the store it is from. You know what – if the size tag really bothers you, cut it and throw it away once you take it home, that way you’ll have erased it from your memory cells for ever! We need to learn to love our bodies, be fit and healthy and feel good. We need to stop the ‘fat talk’ and tell our friends and ourselves how beautiful we are! H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ +&

5:/; A>=B :756B Why did you want to become a fashion designer? I’ve been passionate about clothes and accessories ever since I can remember. My mom always tells me funny stories about how I used to choose my own clothes never letting anyone else dress me; I’d throw aside clothes she’d select for me preferring to stay in my underwear! When did you realise you have a passion for fashion? I can’t tell exactly when but I’m known to be the stylish and go-to person in the family for fashion advice. They annoy me to the extent that when Eid comes, I won’t answer my family’s phone calls because they ask where I should get this and that... My passion comes naturally and that’s why I’m not sure when my love for it grew. Other than being a fashion designer, you’re also a Policy Analyst at the Supreme Council of Family Affairs, is it hard tackling both jobs? I just started my job at the Supreme Council of Family Affairs so there’s not too much pressure but it’s time consuming. It’s a lot of work juggling two things but I’m surrounded by amazing people who help me. The week before my first fashion show I was all over the place, crying as I felt like I couldn’t get it done because I did all the embellishments by hand. However, my friends and family noticed I was going crazy and helped me out. Everything went perfectly on the day because of their help. How long have you been into fashion designing? I started five years ago. I was designing my own abayas when I got into college. People started asking me where I got my abayas from and I would say I did it myself. Word got around and so I started doing abayas for friends and family. However, tackling both my studies and designing was quite difficult as fashion designing is a full time job. During college I sketched the designs for people from the descriptions they gave me; it was good for a while but was neither steady nor practical because people wanted to see the actual design in front of them. Right after I graduated I travelled for a bit and as soon as I got back felt like it was time to start my own line where people can come, touch, see and try the abayas. What word best describes your collection? Simplicity. Not too crowded nor too many colours. Do you try to keep up with trends or do you create your own? I keep up with trends because that’s what the market wants but everything has my own touch,

Unique Touch: 6WVnVh XdbZ l^i] Wdl WZaih Vaadl^c\ XjhidbZgh i]Z dei^dc id lZVg l^i] dg l^i]dji# like the idea featuring a bow belt. All my abayas come with bows and you have the choice to wear it with the bow or without. I personally love bows! I feel like you can take a simple abaya and make it look stylish by just adding a bow belt. Are you open to any kind of designing, or only specific things? Yes, I do whatever the client desires. Some want a collection of jackets, others a wedding dress or something stylish and traditional, it differs from client to client. How do your designs differ from other designers? They’re not fussy, and are comfy, easy-to-wear and not too ‘cultured’. What type of woman do you see wearing your designs? At the fashion show I made it my mission not to have just skinny girls. I had full figured, short, slim, curvy and so on. I want my abayas to be worn by women of different sizes. All the abayas looked gorgeous on the girls and it didn’t matter what size they were. I don’t care which part of society wears the abayas as long as they have a passion for style.

What is the best perk in being a designer? Having all your work recognised and supported by people you don’t know, it makes you humble. If you could be a famous designer for one day, who would it be? Valentino. He’s amazing! I go to the store just to look at how his designs are sewed. Hopefully in 50 years I’ll be where he is. How do you define Doha’s fashion? Qatari women know how to dress. We have our own sense of style that is a fusion of western and Arabic which is very unique. How would you define your personal style? I love clothes that flow. Anything that’s pretty really and not too tight. I especially love belts, I wear them with anything and everything; I’ll take a simple dress, put a belt on it and it will look amazing. I wore this green shanton belt that I made with my dress for my sister’s wedding and later I wore it with everything in my closet. What advice do you give to other women who want to follow their dreams? Go for it. Have faith in yourself even if there are bumps in the road. Never give up. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ +(

Style goddess Victoria Beckham is rumored to own a collection of well over 100 models of the Birkin alone! The House of Hermes literally bagged a winner with the exquisite leather, timeless elegance, refined details of the highly sought after large carryall. Back in the day, Jane Birkin sat next to Jean–Louis Dumas on an airplane and complained to him that her old tapestry bag was in its final days, over spilling with all her personal items. He consequently offered to create a bag for her that would be big enough to transport 'her house' and hence the birth of the Birkin. The Birkin is available in a variety of different materials including Fjord cowhide, Togo calfskin, natural cowhide, ostrich and crocodile. And depending on the size, a Birkin can take up to 25 hours of intricate craftsmanship to master! (Hermes is available at Villaggio Mall) ++ $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

The Newcomer: Brigitte Bardot from Lancel The latest addition to the circuit of celebrity inspired cult bags is the Brigitte Bardot bag from French House Lancel. The chic collection is inspired by French actress, model, singer and activist Brigitte Bardot, who collaborated with Italian mastermind Leonello Borghi on the design of the bag. We’re predicting it’s the collaborative coup that is set to spark jealousy, as since its arrival, it has been causing quite the stir and quickly cemented its reputation as a must-have bag. Every design aspect has been carefully thought out to reflect the timeless beauty that is Brigitte Bardot. The shape of the bag resembles her hour glass figure; the handle symbolises the braid of her favourite hair style; while the boho-style guitar strap is a tribute to band The Gipsy Kings, who she used to travel around with dressed in a wig so as not to be spotted, so she could dance with her favourite band. The bag is available in different materials and colours, and the new A/W collection is packed with vibrant hues that’ll surely have style savvy ladies burning a whole in their wallets! Dana Al-khatib tells how she garnered a cultural understanding of Qatar through style.

As a student based in the United States, I’d always wanted to explore fashion trends around the world, and when a summer management position was offered to me by Maisa Taha, Managing Partner of La Vedette, Fashion and Image Consulting, I immediately accepted. Throughout my time here I’ve learned so much about fashion, more importantly about the vast differences between women’s fashion in Qatar and in the U.S. Coming here, I had some perceptions of what to expect but they were altered upon beginning work at La Vedette. Here, I got a fascinating insight into the culture and the lifestyle of Qatari ladies. I was most interested at how women in the gulf express themselves through their fashion. There is this preconceived notion by many that women in Qatar do not have any personalisation in their wardrobe. Although I didn’t believe this notion, I wanted to see first hand how their identity is truly revealed through the clothes they wear. Working with La Vedette and dealing with different clients, I realised that even though the same designers are offered in both Qatar and the U.S., there is a difference in the way that Qatari women style themselves and what they consider their most important statement pieces. I noticed that most women place a huge emphasis on their handbag. You can tell what type of women is through her handbag and this will completely set her look. In the U.S. it is common that a handbag is the last piece a woman chooses when putting an outfit together. However, in Qatar, the handbag is the most crucial article of clothing. The handbag is seen before the women, which is why many of the clients I met want to seek out the most exclusive and unique pieces. Women walk in a way that allows their bags to lead them! I was really surprised at the abundance of luxurious events here. I came with the interest in styling and putting together looks, yet had no idea that most of these looks consist of luxurious gowns and glamorous make-up. I was intrigued by how many clients led such lavish lifestyles. Our clients had weekly events to attend that required them to be dressed to the nines. Even if it was a wedding and the clients weren’t close to either bride or groom, the women still went all out! It was fascinating and really broke my perception of the mundane life I expected here. I really enjoyed seeing how the looks came together for each individual woman. The styling process would start with choosing the best silhouette for their body and from there a gown is chosen. After the gown, the look comes together with shoes, hair, make up, and nails. Overall, my time in Qatar and experience at La Vedette has opened my eyes to so much about a culture through fashion, and how the main driving force behind Qatari style is all about the luxury. ,% $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

MUSEUM VAN LOON

The scene is set – 05:00 wake up call for a 07:30 shoot start on. Weather – temperate, blue skies – not a cloud in sight, we all meet at Muldooneys HQ promptly at 07:00 for croissants and coffee before heading off to the Museum van Loon. Our faithful green bus all packed and ready with Couture gowns from Atelier LeonLeon, the charming and effervescent Sterre Sparreboom and the beautiful Muldooneys London SS/ Fall 2012/2013 Collection made its way along the cobbled stone canals of the Keizersgracht. Eventually we arrived at the Museum van Loon, a magnificent private residence built in 1672 by the architect Adriaen Dortsman for the Van Loon Family, co founders of the Dutch East India Company in 1602 by Willem van Loon. We were met at the souterrain by Diederick von Bogenhausen, who graciously had refreshments prepared and walked us through the house, opening the enormous shutters and lights as Tuesdays the home is closed to the public. We were by all accounts not the only film crew present as the grand French House Hermes was

HERENGRACHT

also on site. We started out in the gardens with the Coach house has backdrop for the Black Zaffiano Line, the clean lines, ceramic stairs and black doors blending in with the matt of black leather. Moving then into the light blue garden room with its impressive chandeliers and 18th century chair which proved to be the perfect seating spot for the jacinth blue Blythe and Mabel Bags. The sumptuous dining room, all bathed in orange, the warm hues of the red room, bedroom and library with all its golden age splendor and art done by one of Rembrandts pupils – Ferdinand Bol, provided the perfect locations for the Asian bronzes and metallic coppers, black and the warm zesty tangerine. Sterre was in her element, every request, suggestion taken and interpretated in the most feline of poses. As we were later to see, her presence and body language is second to none. After nearly four hours of shooting, we ventured to the canals of the Herengracht. Pristine blue

skies and a warm summery day ensured the canals were alive with tourists, bikers and just ordinary Amsterdammers – who love a little bit of theatre. Tourists stopped as the crew set up shop, snapping photos, while cars and bikers made way. The atmosphere was of happy heady summer days! On the bridge separating the beautiful Browersgracht from the stately Herengracht was where the Hayley bag in ostrich rifle green came alive with the pashminas from CosmoQueen. The green of the backdrop blending in subtly with sunshine through the foliage. Two more photos at the Herengracht 89a, and we had the inside of our back cover, with Couture from Atelier Leonleon, who I am told will be in Kuwait this November! As dusk fell, the old tree trunk and water fountain at the Weteringschans Park was set alight with bulbs and cameras as the brown lizard Amelia, Leah Hobo and Romy tote created a small nest amongst the dried bark and twigs. CHIQUE CORNELIS SCHUYSTRAAT

The chique Cornelis Schuystraat in Amsterdam, Old South. The sun was yet to emerge and we took the opportunity to quickly set up cameras and lights before the street gained life. Sterre emerged in stylish, elegant clothing with the Tatum bag in chocolate brown croc and the Davina Tote in Zaffiano Black – at times, cheekily waving to the small crowd that was now starting to appear. As the sun rose we set out for the Troepen Institute to meet with Willemijn who had arranged open passes to the entire institute. ,) $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

TROEPEN INSTITUTE

Built in 1910 by the Dutch architect J.J. van Nieukerken in a neo-renaissance style using one color for the bricks and one type of natural stone for the imposing octagonal Marble Hall was a fantastic location for the grand theater of the Bronze collection. The Erin, Betsy and Gerda clutch, with the luxurious pashmina from Cosmoqueen in this seasons key color Apple sage came alive in the most unlikely of likely settings – that of the Royal Cloakroom – the beautiful Moorish mosaics in blue, greens and dulcet yellows

blending in splendidly with the trio. A quick lunch at Spargo and we ventured forth towards final stage of the shoot location, Café Americain, the Grand dame of Art Décor Cafes in Amsterdam, part of the The Eden Amsterdam American Hotel built in 1900. With its stainedglass windows and art deco touches, the scene had been set to transport us back to the roaring twenties. It was here where we would convincingly get our cover shot with the Thera Tote on the terrace. It was a perfect finale to a theatrical performance.

In 1981, Leon Klaasens Bos started his quest to form the perfect gown, after spending years growing up creating fairytale ballgowns. Amsterdam led to Paris where he was met Katoucha, the model and muse of Yves Saint Laurent who wanted to set up her own fashion house. She led him to the house of Yves who Leon apprenticed with. “The things I saw there gave me that extra that you otherwise won’t discover. The quality, standard, construction, and most of all, the deceiving simplicity of the height of fashion, Leon revealed. And his time there set the stage for Atelier LeonLeon in ready to wear.

Muldooneys 2012/2013 epitomises all the key colours trends from jacinth blues, apple sage, coppers and bronze, tangerines in clean lines and every now and then small fussy details, which gives the collection the Glam factor. The collection has been inspired by travel, a bit of mellow drama and exotic locations. Our capsule Collection – Crackled Bronze Snake was inspired by the rich city of Doha, blending the mystique of the East meeting West.

Affiliated with the foundation The King Hussein Foundation in Jordan with Queen Noor and the Jordan River Foundation with Queen Rania. CosmoQueen empowers impoverished woman by teaching them skills which help them create beautiful handmade pashminas in silk and other exotic materials.

Marlene Naicker is Founder and Creative Director of Muldooneys – London. The brand Muldooneys is renowned for its luxury leather accessories, notably handbags, designed for sophisticated, independent, fashion concious women. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ ,*

The Brits are famous for many things – bad weather, cucumber sandwiches, William Shakespeare and the Spice Girls. But when it comes to fashion, they have made a more substantial contribution to the world – the trench coat, the mini skirt, tartan, Alexander McQueen and Kate Moss. If you are into fashion history, you will find that Britain has always been a trend-setting country, stretching as far back as the Dark Ages when women would wear long pointed headdresses and it was fashionable to wear gowns with billowing sleeves and tight lacing for a figure-hugging look (the body con dress of the day).

Is this what your body is screaming after a period of indulging, feasting and late nights? If you've decided it's time to listen to your body, HERE IS NICOLE VAN HATTEM'S guide to easy detox for mental clarity, boosted energy and weight loss. Hit the pillow A regular sleep pattern of 6-8 hrs of good quality sleep allows the body and mind time to rejuvenate. Aim to be in bed no later than 10pm at night to allow your adrenal glands to work their magic – these powerful little endocrine glands manufacture and secrete hormones that are essential for life, health and vitality, and are functioning at their peak between 10pm and 1am.

Go green I'm not talking about the environment here, I'm referring to the colour of your food. Boost your nutrition levels by adding greens to your diet. Eat lots of raw leafy green salads, lightly steam your green vegetables, make green smoothies (add a couple of handfuls of baby spinach and a cup of water to your favourite fruit, blend and drink!), try green powders (such as powder barley grass). If you make no other dietary changes but this one, you will feel the benefits. -% $ H:EI:B7:G '%&&

Move The word 'exercise' conjures up images of smelly sweaty gyms, spandex, pain, effort and boredom. Look at your body – it was designed to move! Arms swing, lift, pull, push. Legs walk, run, dance, kick. Use your body to move in ways that circulate your blood, massage your organs, stretch and strengthen your muscles, get oxygen in and out and make you feel good. Don't limit yourself by thinking of movement as exercise – think of it as a fun, get creative.

Portion sizes Give your body a rest from excess. How much is too much? There are plenty of guides available that can tell you how much of what foods to eat for your age, size and activity levels. Take an honest look at your plate. Slow down your pace of eating. Chew chew chew every mouthful. Start eating your meal by eating the vegetables and fruits first. Stop when your hunger is satiated NOT when you are full and teach yourself to know the difference.

Usual suspects

Water – take stock

I'm sure you've heard it all before but here's a reminder anyway. Stop drinking the sodas, eating highly processed and chemicalised foods, and buying low quality takeaways. They are toxic products packaged and marketed to convince you to hand over your hard earned cash for a temporary taste or hunger fix. These are foods that create illness and ageing – not health and vitality, and they certainly don't belong on a celebration buffet.

How much clean filtered water do you really drink in a day? Two litres or 8 glasses is generally considered the minimum that the body needs for normal body functions. This is of course if you are already healthy, not moving a great deal, not sitting in air conditioning or artificially heated environments, eating a healthy diet, and living in a moderate climate. If you eat highly processed foods, live in a hot or cold climate, are physically active or not at the peak of health, you may need more. Keep a water diary for one day to check if you really are drinking enough water.

Breathe If you've been doing a lot of sitting, sleeping and eating and not a lot else, it's a good idea to do some active breathing. Move, meditate, or simply do 10 deep breathes in a row every hour to help flush your cells with life giving oxygen.

In Rise of the Planet of Apes, James Franco stars as Will Rodman, a scientist developing a cure for Alzheimer’s. Tested on apes, the drug begins to reveal its side effects causing the apes to develop intelligence that leads to disastrous consequences for humans. While the trial is quickly abandoned and Will is told to kill all the apes, he saves baby Caesar who eventually steals the serum to empower the apes, brought to life with CG animation from the makers of Avatar, against the humans.

Fall/Winter trends: go dark with your makeup

Fall’s colours are always a few shades darker than summer’s, but this year you have permission to go all the way, experimenting with more modern takes on goth and grunge looks. During the Fall/Winter shows, many designers were inspired by the 1990s, pairing their outfits with dark, even black lips, (Lela Rose, Ashley Isham), bold eyebrows (Frankie Morello, Nicholas K), and dark, metallic eye makeup (Gaspard Yurkievich). This season’s evening looks will seem even more modern when combined with a bit of creative eyeliner: fashion-forward designers such as Jeremy Scott or Kinder Aggugini showed expressive winged styles and can serve as inspiration for your own interpretation. Fall’s traditional makeup colors, such as gold, copper, brown, and red, remain popular this year, as seen at Jill Stuart and many other runways.

Dolce & Gabbana launch foundation and lipstick Following in the footsteps of fellow fashion brands like Tom Ford and Burberry that have also extended their beauty ranges recently, the Italian designers are readying more products for their offering this fall, reports Women’s Wear Daily. In addition to their Animalier face bronzer, which launched earlier this year, fans of the brand will be able to shop Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation (15 shades, $55 each) and Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick (20 shades, $34). “A woman who applies makeup is doing a very sensual act that captures the attention,” Domenico Dolce told WWD. “So the quality is important, but also its image, its packaging.... Everything in our products is designed to have women feeling sensual, and extremely feminine while using it.” The new products will become available in September. www.dolcegabbana.com

Chanel to launch new nail polish line during Fashion’s Night Out While September’s global shopping event is mainly about fashion launches, designer meet-and-greets, and other sartorial treats, beauty fans will also get their money’s worth. Set for an international launch during Fashion’s Night Out on September 8, Chanel’s new and sure-to-be-sold-out lacquer collection Les Jeans will be denim-inspired, coming in three different shades of blue named Blue Rebel, Coco Blue and Blue Boy. While fans of the brand know that its polishes tend to go within the blink of an eye, there will be some extra motivation to get shopping fast as this range will only be available through the end of September. Get them during Fashion’s Night Out or afterwards in Chanel stores and at chanel.com. www.chanel.com

Kate Winslet launches make-up range with LancOme Following her modeling gigs for the beauty brand’s L’Absolu Rouge lipstick and Tresor fragrance, the Hollywood actress is putting her relationship with Lancome to a charitable use. In aid of her charity, the Golden Hat Foundation, which helps improve the lives of autistic children, Winslet is readying a small collection, including L’Absolu Rouge, Mini Le Vernis Nail Polish, and a makeup palette for a holiday season launch. Lancome has said it will be donating at least 150,000 euros from the collection’s sales to The Golden Hat Foundation, whose logo will be embossed in gold onto the products and packaging. In related news, Winslet announced this week that she had set up the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League along with personal friends and fellow actresses Emma Thompson and Rachel Weisz to support natural beauty in Hollywood. www.lancome.com

Can tanning be addictive? New research says yes, and that those who regularly use tanning beds may experience changes in their brain activity similar to those triggered by drug addiction. Meaning, despite the risks for skin cancer and premature aging, they keep going back for more. Scientists have long suspected that frequent exposure to UV radiation can become addictive, but new research announced last week is the first to “peer inside the brains of people as they lay in tanning beds, reported The New York Times. The findings, which appear online in the journal Addiction Biology, revealed that brain activity and corresponding blood flow in those using tanning beds is similar to that seen in people addicted to drugs or alcohol, suggesting its addictive quality. The research follows another cited by The New York Times that in 2005 found that many sunbathers “met the psychiatric definition of a substance abuse disorder, based on answers to a test. Past research has shown that indoor tanning increases the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75 percent. Talk to your dermatologist about your UV exposure risks, wear sunscreen, and avoid tanning beds. If you enjoy being bronze, try a UV-free tanner, available in creams or sprays. If you want to find a safer, environmentally friendly sunless tanner, look to the Environmental Working Goup’s (EWG) cosmetic safety database Skin Deep.

MAC COLLABORATES WITH CINDY SHERMAN FOR ARTsy limited edition Owning a Sherman just got a whole lot cheaper: the conceptual photographer and filmmaker will release an artistic collection with the make-up brand come September. Sherman’s Untitled #96 might be the most expensive photo print ever purchased (it sold for $3.89 million at a Christie’s auction), but her products for the cult beauty brand can be yours from $14.50 for a lipstick to $38 for an eyeshadow palette. MAC has released three visuals to tease the range, depicting the artist in exaggerated looks (one is very literally clownish) meant to demonstrate the “power of transformation: she embodies an “offkilter Hitchcock heroine, a “fresh corpse, a “Caravaggio Portrait, and a “Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Maven. While these personae, who again question women’s role in society and the media, the leitmotif of Sherman’s work inspired three different collections, each coming with lipsticks, eyeliners, and eyeshadows, it is up to you whether to combine them for a more avant-garde or classic look. The limited-edition collection becomes available on September 29. www.maccosmetics.com All content from Relax News – afprelaxnews.com H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ -,

Bobbi Brown

This season, Bobbi Brown is celebrating 20 years of wearable makeup, what have you got planned? It starts with the Tortoise Shell Collection which not only gives women beautiful neutrals for a naturally nude face, but also gives them everything they need to get the sought after stand out eye. And because the holiday season is all about parties and a little glitz and glamour, there’s the party fragrance and sparkly colors that will make any woman shine.

The Trends...

Bobbi Brown and her team of makeup artist were backstage at New York Fashion Week, creating beautifully wearable looks that incorporated the most modern trends.

CLASSIC LIPS Looks from the 1920’s and 1940’s were cited as inspiration, bold beautiful lips in timeless deep reds were on display. Create a modern and sophisticated look that packs a punch by pairing bold lips and dramatic eyes – perfectly complementing the rich jewel-toned fabrics of fall/winter. The fresh, natural quality of the skin gives this look a modern, timeless twist.

EARTHY TONES This season, to create the look of a world traveller, Bobbi has designed a beautifully rustic makeup look which – like much of the color palette on display during Fashion Week – was heavily influenced by the natural world. Shimmer and matte textures are paired together to create a sophisticated yet earthy look. Bobbi describes the look as ‘a beautiful collection of gold, bronze and khaki that sparkles across the eyes – perfect for a pretty powerful woman.’ How can girls’ best maintain make-up in the humid Qatari heat? Choose lightweight, less emollient lotion and gel skincare formulas to hydrate and protect your skin without getting in the way of your makeup. Formulas that are dense and contain a high level of emollients can leave skin feeling slippery, making it hard for makeup to stay on. Allow for your skin to fully absorb the moisturiser or sunscreen before continuing with the rest of your beauty routine. Also, stick

to lightweight makeup formulas – like tinted moisturizer, powder eye shadow and blush – and long-wear options including Long-Wear Cream Shadow, Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner and No Smudge Mascara. Can you recommend a specific cleansing process that will leave skin feeling soft and refreshed? Skin care specifics really depend on the person – some women have oily skin and

BOYISH CHARM Minimal beauty is the major trend of the season, with perfectly fresh skin, defined cheekbones, strong brows and natural lips taking center stage. A fresh, simple look that subtly enhances features. Brows are full and unapologetic, the skin is flawless, and eyes and lips are perfectly natural. The look is casual, chic, and incredibly cool.

SEVENTIES ROMANCE Even amongst the refined autumn trends, there are snippets of breezy, relaxed beauty still lingering from summer. Nude tones and the occasional pop of pink create a low-key romantic vibe. The look is kept sophisticated and modern with blush applied low on the cheekbones and eyeliner drawn inside the lid. Pair the slinky silhouettes of 1970’s clothing with ‘a five-minute party face’ – flawlessly dewy skin, defined brows, black eye liner, and soft pink lips. want to reduce shine, while some need extra moisture for dry skin. If your skin is dry, try using a cream cleanser and thick moisturizer – you might even want to invest in a good face oil. For oily skin, a gel cleanser and oil-free moisturizer are best for controlling shine. But no matter what skin type you have, using SPF is the most important thing you can use to keep yourself healthy and vibrant looking. It is essential to protecting skin from the harmful effects of sun damage. H:EI:B7:G '%&& $ .&

Metallic & Shimmer

By ORNA BALLOUT

Metallic and shimmering nail varnish are mega trends of the season. Yes those lively, shiny and sparkling hues that were popular in the 80s made an appearance on many A/W runways. We adore the collection from fashion and beauty experts Chanel. Inspired by materials including feathers and cut stone, it produces exciting polishes featuring shimmering and metallic reflections which almost feel like an extension of a couture garment!

A/W nail trends

Quartz: bronze and pink combined produces a sophisticated hue

Graphite: silver, gold and platinum, fuse in a unique effect

Peridot: gold and green immerse themselves in the glow of a moire effect

Trend Alert: OPI Super Power Polishes OPI has developed a popular concept with their Axxium Soak-Off Gels. The new ‘permanent’ polishes promise chip-resistant nails with a soft gel coating that will last weeks longer than regular polishes. The concept, similar to acrylic nails, requires a UV light to set the gel; however the result looks more natural, and according to Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, co-founder of OPI, “they can actually help some women grow their nails, by providing a protective cover. The new Axxium Soak-Off gel collection is available in some of the brand’s most popular colours including Russian Navy and Strawberry Margarita. The best news is that the service is available in Qatar at Glow Salon and Pour Elle – hooray!

Natural shades of polish are the perfect picks to achieve subtle and sophisticated beauty. To get the look, think pale pinks, greige (cross between gray, brown and beige) and matte colours. We recommend the Pearly White and Soft Lilac Pink shades from the new 10 day enamel collection from Bourjois. With an exclusive fortifying formula and angles touch up brush, getting your nails catwalk ready has just got a whole lot easier! Thanks to the new formula, nails are twice as strong and chip-resistant for up to 10 days with a luminous pearly finish.

Crazy Stupid Love Crazy, Stupid, Love follows Cal (Steve Carrell) as he tries to get over his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) after she leaves him for her co-worker (Kevin Bacon), using the help of womaniser and wingman Jacob (Ryan Gosling). As Cal learns from Jacob’s tricks of the trade, Hannah (Emma Stone) changes the game for Jacob with her quick wit and antics, forcing Jacob to rethink his player ways. Cal’s 13 year old son adds additional humour by lusting after a 17 year old ‘older’ woman. A complex plot, this movie is woven together by a hilarious ensemble cast that don’t fail to deliver a movie that stands out this summer as a refreshing and light-hearted take on love and finding your soul mate.

In this hard to put down book by Jennifer Close, you will cry as Isabella does when she realizes how unhappy she is in her job, laugh at Mary pining for her boss and blush as you remember the man you should not have been attracted to just like Lauren.

Cowboys and Aliens

Friends with Benefits

From the director of Iron Man, this month Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford come together in an exciting mash-up of the classic genres of western and alien in Cowboys and Aliens. This larger than life summer blockbuster promises an onscreen battle with guns, horses and spaceships delivered using the latest technology. Daniel Craig plays outlaw Jake Lonergan who joins forces with cattle baron Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford) against the invading aliens. The visual effects in this movie keep you thoroughly entertained and the strong cast ensures that this strange combination of genres works, so head to this movie for some big budget entertainment.

Friends with Benefits is a fast paced and quick witted take on the problem of physical relationships between friends. Starring Mila Kunis as Jamie and Justin Timberlake as Dylan, the two make a vow to keep their relationship just physical after coming out of difficult long term relationships. The compatibility between these two attractive leads convinces the audience with such casual ease that they really are these characters, with hilariously sharp dialogue and a perfect supporting cast. Being called one of the best romantic comedies of the year, this movie is the infectious, modern take that the cliched romantic comedy genre desperately needed.
