A MESSAGE FROM OUR
ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Mulgrave Donors, This report is filled with stories that illustrate the strength and unity of our community. We are so very fortunate to be on this journey together, aligned in our values and our desire to see our children strive to fulfil their dreams and be inspired to reach their personal best. We are so incredibly grateful for your philanthropic contributions to the Mulgrave community. You have modelled the values of social responsibility and commitment that our school stands for, and whether you have donated your money or your time, we are deeply appreciative. Despite the challenging circumstances in which we find ourselves, we are immensely proud of the milestones that our community has been able to achieve. You have made a real and immediate impact. You provided financial relief to families affected by COVID-19, funded scholarships, improved student learning spaces, and supported teachers in their professional development. In this Donor and Giving Report, you will discover the myriad ways you have embodied our community values and made a difference at our school. We are pleased to steward your funds with transparency and accountability. Because of your generosity, we are nurturing a scientist who finds the next big cure, inspiring an athlete to uplift those around them, encouraging a writer to change the world with their words, and creating a generation of true world citizens who embody humility, inclusion, and excellence. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your contribution. Warmly,
Elizabeth Calderon Assistant Head of School, Development

You made this possible! These are just some of the ways your giving is transforming the Mulgrave community.
THE IMPACT OF DONATIONS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE A student body that encompasses a range of socioeconomic backgrounds creates a wellrounded environment and contributes to diversity of perspectives, ideas, and creativity. Thanks to our donors, 19 students received financial assistance through entrance scholarships to attend Mulgrave for the 2020-2021 school year.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS Throughout the year, teachers engaged in workshops and conferences to support students’ social and emotional wellbeing and to develop innovative teaching practices in education. Notably, curriculum coordinators participated in valuable team leadership training from the Principals’ Training Centre, a leading Professional Development organisation for international school educators. Ann Straub, an International Advisor for the Council of International Schools (CIS), also led a faculty-wide virtual workshop in the spring on intercultural skills.
HEAD’S PRIORITY The Head’s Priority fund allocates donations to where need is greatest. Some specific examples of where gifts made a difference include the following: Early Years Playground Our youngest learners now have a play structure of their very own! The ability for these little ones to discover the world around them while developing their gross motor, communication, and relationship skills is a critical part of their growth. Enhancements to their special outdoor space encourage exploration within a safe and nurturing environment. Upper School Makerspace This studio now has several new tools, including a 45-watt laser cutter which has already inspired students to combine traditional art techniques with digital design and leading-edge technology. A wide range of students are able to access these tools for creative projects, from those in the Junior School who are just beginning to learn about the design process to accomplished artists in Grade 12 who put their learnings into practice as part of their Diploma Programme portfolio and final exhibition. Junior School French and Mandarin Rooms This language arts space has been enhanced with new media and technology to modernise student learning. To help develop reading, writing, and listening skills, large screen televisions have been installed. These classrooms of tomorrow, when supplemented with their many posters, signs, and books, make for an immersive second language environment where instruction is highly engaging.

“Our son had a wonderful year at Mulgrave School. As a new student, he and other new students are the beneficiaries of current families’ contributions to the school, and we’re delighted to ‘pay it forward’. We’re supporting the Head’s Priority Fund to keep the community ‘Momentum’ going. We also supported the Scholarship Fund because we would like diverse students with exceptional academic and personal achievements to have a wonderful Mulgrave experience, just as our son has. We hope our story can inspire more families to support the school.”

“We have four children who have all attended Mulgrave. We love the school for all that it has to offer: an IB education, knowledgeable and caring teachers, unique opportunities, and a great community. When the pandemic hit and we heard that some families were struggling due to lost jobs or wage decreases, we wanted to donate to help our community. We understood the desire for their children to be able to continue their education at Mulgrave.”

THE SHEVCHENKO-MITT FAMILY Alex and Kate both grew up in former Soviet Union countries, Ukraine and Kazakhstan respectively, and moved to Canada in their early twenties. Together, they spent over ten years in Toronto and five years in San Francisco before deciding to call Vancouver home with their two children, Stella and Evan. When they landed in Vancouver in 2018, they started looking for a preschool that would have a structured environment, yet allowed plenty of room for natural development, play, and artistic exploration. “Obviously, Mulgrave checked all the boxes,” Kate explains. “Just a few months into the term, we fell in love with the school and realised that this is the place we want our children to call a second home for the next 12 years of their lives.” Alex and Kate aren’t the only ones who are fond of Mulgrave. “When our son, Evan, got in the car after the first day of school this year, he said, ‘Mama, today was the best day of my life!’ This says it all!” Beyond the first day of school, there have already been many memorable moments particularly the community events. “Our favourite was the Junior School Terry Fox Run last year when parents were invited to participate. The event had such a positive spirit, and the kids keep asking when we are going to have the next one.” The Shevchenko-Mitt family is inspired to give to Mulgrave as they are strong believers that education has a high impact and the ability to unlock children’s potential. “It’s incredibly humbling to contribute to kids’ formative stages when they develop skills and values that will guide them through their lives.” For families who are thinking about making a gift to Mulgrave, Alex says, “It is the best investment in the future of your children you can make.”

MULGRAVE’S ANNUAL GALA 2019 GALAXY OF WONDERS
12
Our highly anticipated black-tie gala, Galaxy of Wonders, was held at the Parq on Saturday, October 19, 2019. More than 300 guests gathered to celebrate our community and raise funds for the school. The night was filled with laughter, games, dancing, and an exciting live auction. An incredible $375,000 was raised that evening, and of the total amount raised, $128,000 was directed to scholarships. Another $125,000 came from a generous matching donation, which has been endowed to provide sustainable support for our scholarship programme. The remainder of the money raised was allocated to Momentum. This evening would have not been possible without all of our guests, the Gala Committee, event volunteers, and sponsors who generously gave their support. A special thank you goes out to our tireless Gala Chair, Shima Fasihi, for all of her work to make the event such a stellar experience for us all.

THE MULGRAVE MULGRAVE ENDOWMENT THE ENDOWMENT 2024 2019 2007 The Mulgrave Endowment Fund was established through the generosity of 6 Mulgrave families.
With $1.2M and 4 named funds, the initial gifts continue to grow while supporting deserving students.
Our goal is to raise an additional $3M in the coming years to bring our Endowment to $4M, allowing us to expand our financial aid programme.
2044 Through wise investment practices, the Endowment will reach $6M* in the next 25 years, ensuring that even more students will enjoy the benefits of a Mulgrave education.
What is an Endowment Fund? It’s a fund where the original gift... is invested & will grow over time... with only the income (interest) from % the fund spent on causes you love (our school!) ...
that will support our community forever. * Estimated growth rate of 6% for future years and annual distribution of 4%.
14
SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWMENT Diversity is a vital part of our school’s ethos; the diversity of thought, ideas, experience, culture, and backgrounds that exist at Mulgrave contribute to a critical and compassionate understanding of the world around us. Through our scholarship programme, students with diverse backgrounds who have the potential to truly thrive at Mulgrave, are given the opportunity to study here regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. In 2019-2020, we raised $280,000 and grew our endowment total to $1.48 million. For the 2020-2021 school year, 19 students will receive financial assistance thanks to the generosity of our donors. This includes six students from Afghanistan who have been awarded full scholarships. The Mulgrave Foundation supports the school in achieving its mission to ‘Inspire Excellence in Education and Life’ and plays an essential role by overseeing the endowment fund for our scholarship programme. The Mulgrave Foundation is a BCregistered, not-for-profit society with charitable status. It is managed by a Board of Directors who are parents and alumni parents of the school. Their focus is on growing the endowment to establish a sustainable model for tuition not tied to the economy or the school’s annual revenue. The fund will help meet families’ needs, both locally and globally, through a financial relief model where eligibility is determined by an independent third party.

OUR COMMUNITY
HELAINE SHEPARD Alumni Parent of Taylor, ‘08 and Kate, ‘12 Supporter of Imagine, MPower, and Momentum campaigns
“It is my pleasure to be an active member of the Mulgrave community. Even though our youngest daughter graduated eight years ago, the school’s core values transcend well beyond graduation and into the various phases of all our lives. I am honoured to serve as a member of the Mulgrave School Board of Directors, Alumni Advisory Board, Governance Committee, and the Nominations Committee. I thoroughly enjoy working alongside like-minded people who share the same values and vision; their unwavering dedication to serving this outstanding school is inspiring. This community is truly the heart and soul of Mulgrave - it is where friendships begin, grow, and flourish.”
TRACEY DIXON Staff and Alumni Parent of Hannah, ‘18 and Zoe-Rae, ‘16 Supporter of Momentum Community Relief Fund, MPower, and Imagine campaigns
“Mulgrave is my home away from home. The sense of community here is immense, and the opportunity to grow and learn permeates into the walls. You feel the energy when you walk in the building, which creates the excitement to be here every day. Mulgrave has done so much for me and my daughters, and continues to be an extremely important part of our lives. Giving shows the appreciation I feel for Mulgrave School and is a way for me to say ‘thank you’ for all that the school has done and continues to do for families.”
18
For many of us, Mulgrave is a second home. Parents, students, faculty, and staff all work with each other, both in and outside the school, to create a community that allows for individuals to thrive while tending to the bonds that create unity. This community places an emphasis on the value of giving back, and the result is a shared sense of partnership and togetherness as we all work towards a common vision for the future of our school.
ROSA YIP Teacher, Mandarin Junior School Supporter of MPower and Imagine campaigns
“It is my tenth year working at Mulgrave and having my own dedicated Mandarin classroom has always been my dream. Mulgrave donors brought this dream into the real world. Our small class sizes allow for more active learning, while having a language arts room specifically for Mandarin enables students to be surrounded and inspired by Chinese culture. Moreover, in the past year, the Mandarin programme has integrated new media and technology into student learning, creating a sense of engagement and interconnectedness.”
RHONDA BEAUPRE Teacher, French Middle School Supporter of MPower campaign
“Mulgrave is a supportive and close-knit community that keeps students at the heart of all decisions that are made. The school is always thinking forward and encouraging growth, and it is in large part because of donors that we are able to actualise these ideals. Over the last year, our department received several resources which allowed students to interact authentically in French. Mulgrave’s culture of giving directly improved choice amongst our learners, enabled us to provide individualised support, and allowed teachers to plan ahead and grow as professionals.”

COMMUNITY GIVING Through their generous giving, these individuals truly take to heart the notion that it takes a village to raise a child. Our community members recognise the importance of Mulgrave’s mission and believe in the power of education to change the world for the better. The following list includes corporations, staff, grandparents, alumni, and friends of Mulgrave who gave during the school year of 2019-2020.
Please note that due to COVID-19, the staff appeal traditionally carried out in March was cancelled. We anticipate a higher participation rate for 2020-2021.

“Each of our three granddaughters appreciate Mulgrave’s culture of respect, encouragement, and inclusiveness which makes them feel safe and happy. We donated to Mulgrave for many reasons but primarily to assist the school in building a truly world-class education facility. Investing in children is essential to maximise their ability to contribute their skills, leadership, and values to society in the future. We have benefited greatly from the investments made by prior generations, and now it is our turn to give back.”

VOLUNTEERING AT MULGRAVE
“Mulgrave’s strong sense of community first attracted our family to the school in 2017 when our three boys began in Grades 4, 7, and 8. Since then, I have volunteered as a Class Parent, as a member of the Advancement Committee, on the Circulation Desk at the Library, on the MVP Executive, and have baked dozens of cookies (along with so many of our Mulgrave families) for the annual MVP Baking Buffet. It is a privilege to engage with and serve the broader Mulgrave community, and I feel even more connected to each of my children and their respective journeys through the Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools.”

Running the M Store, volunteering in the cafeteria or library, or acting as a Class Parent these are just some of the many ways that parents get involved and give back to Mulgrave. All parents are part of our Mulgrave Volunteer Parent Association (MVP), and an elected executive of representatives works together each year to enhance and support student life.

CURRENT FAMILY LIFETIME GIVING Our school was founded with incredible community spirit and the generosity of families who shared their time, expertise, and funds. Over the past 26 years, we have continued to build a strong culture of giving; your commitment to our school and this culture demonstrates a shared investment in the Mulgrave’s mission. Ongoing support from our community allows our school to make transformative changes year over year, creates financial sustainability, and helps us plan for the future with confidence. Your thoughtfulness creates amazing opportunities for our students! Since Mulgrave was founded, we have raised over $42 million, and over 500 current families have contributed to our campaigns. The following list represents those who have given generously to make Mulgrave the school it is today. ATHLETICS AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Over the past several years, Mulgrave has expanded its co-curricular options for all of our students, from the Junior School to Grade 12. Interest has grown in team sports such as basketball and soccer, and participation in our choir, band, dance, and drama programmes has steadily increased. To further enhance our holistic provision and school life, we are building a facility that will give students the opportunity to play, move, and perform, as well as build character and leadership skills. The Athletics and Performing Arts Centre is a timely addition to our campus and is slated for completion in summer 2021. This 32,000 square foot space will include the following amenities: • NBA-sized basketball court with viewing gallery • Multi-purpose space/gymnasium • Dance space and yoga studio • Choral and performance spaces and rehearsal rooms • Team rooms • Field-level locker rooms • Fitness Centre While the leadership of our Board of Directors has enabled the project to be underwritten by long-term bank borrowing, we will equip and develop the space through the generous gifts of Mulgrave families. Thank you to our initial donors who have already helped bring our vision to reality. This next step in the evolution of our campus will improve capacity and accommodate the expansion of instructional, recreational, and intramural programmes for all students.
“I am so grateful for all the support the Athletics department has given me throughout my journey here at Mulgrave. Participating in sports has made me a well-rounded student and has been a positive influence in my life in many ways. The new Centre will encourage students to be more active and participate in athletics. It will be an amazing new addition to the school!”
ISAAC MANJI, G12 student 28
LOOKING AHEAD As the second year of Momentum begins, the Mulgrave leadership will focus on two areas for annual giving:
HEAD’S PRIORITY Donations towards this fund support the school’s most urgent initiatives. Unrestricted funding gives our school the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances as they arise. Examples of the 2020-2021 priority areas include student social and emotional well-being, learning resources, and professional development for teachers.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Mulgrave offers a financial needs-based programme that supports a diverse range of students in their pursuit of an exemplary education, regardless of their financial circumstances. Scholarships are awarded to incoming students and are guaranteed for the time they remain at the school, while financial assistance offers temporary support for current students in need.
LET’S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING!
