LANDSCAPE DESIGN
2.2.4 Master Plan Phase III - Pedestrian Network
01 GC PHASE III EXPANSION
The exterior hardscape and softscape designs of the GC Phase III Expansion are intended to create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces, with the specific goal in preserving the natural topography. Built elements are planned to sit ‘lightly’ on the land. The selection of trees responds to both the local climate and the master planning of the GC Phase III Expansion with tree types playing a key role in the creation of ‘shaded spaces’, private pavilions and communal areas.
The landscape strategy reflects the landscape character, including the green corridors and parks, in the adjoining Green Community development. The hard scape is formed of a network of footpaths similar to the existing network, and providing the residents with direct links to the recreation facility and beyond. The soft scape incorporates screen planting along boundaries, feature planting at nodes of interest, and provide natural shading. Centrally located tots lots (children’s play areas) also provide a node of activity for all residents.

SPATIAL AND TERRITORIAL ANALYSIS
LANDSCAPE SENSORY PERCEPTION
THE FIRST STEP THAT WAS TAKEN DURING THE INITIAL STAGES OF THIS PROJECT WAS THE REGIONAL ANALYSIS. IN ORDER TO HAVE THE BEST UNDERSTANDING POSSIBLE FOR THE CASCINA, WE STARTED THE ANALYSIS AT A TERRITORIAL SCALE IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY THE CASCINA’S LOCATION WITHIN THE REGION AND IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH A CIRCULATION AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM BETWEEN OUR CASCINA AND ALL THE OTHER MAJOR CITIES AND CASCINA’S AROUND IT.
AFTER WE ANALYIZED THE CASCINA’S REGIONAL SCALE WE DELVED FURTHER INTO RESEARCHING THE CASCINA ON A SMALLER SCALE. WE STUDIED NUMEROUS ASPECTS OF THE CACSINA. TWO OF THE MAIN ASPECTS THAT HELPED US DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT WERE THE LANDSCAPE AND SENSORY ANALYSIS. A THOROUGH ANALYSIS ON THE LANDSCAPE TYPOLOGY AS WELL AS THE SENSORY PERCEPTION OF THE USERS AT EACH POINT OF THE CASCINA.

DESIGN ALTERNATIVES AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, A SERIES OF STUDIES WERE EXECUTED ON THE CASCINA IN ORDER TO FIND THE MOST IDEAL PLACEMENT OF EACH OF THE SPACES IN ACCORDANCE TO THEIR FUNCTIONS AND THEIR HISTORICAL VALUE. SEVERAL DESIGN ALTERNATIVES WERE DEVELOPED BEFORE REACHING THE FINAL RESULT WHICH IS SHOWN IN THE DIAGRAMS PROVIDED. THE DIAGRAMS ALSO EXPLAIN THE DISTRIBUTIVE SOLUTION THAT WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE CASCINA IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FINAL DESIGN ALTERNATIVE THAT IS PROPOSED.

Cascina Fornace is a historic farm that is located on the outskirts of Milano. The project revolved around the regeneration of the historical dairy farm in order to help the city’s economic and environmental initiatives and efficiency. The project aimed to maintain the old farm’s rich history by proposing smart and sustainable solutions that were designed to regenerate the farm’s production system meanwhile maintaining connectivity and homogeneity with its urban context.

While the city scale studied the cities general layout and disadvantages and helped to improve them, the urban scale aimed to propose more specific solutions and help to provide the city with a new code of urban design for the future. The architectural scale tackled general issues of architecture and design in order to help bring forth sustainable and smart solutions to the city’s future construction projects. This research conisisted of over 200 pages. Responsibilities: - Architectural Design Development - Concept & Schematic Report Preperation - Urban Planning Development - Working Drawings (Plans, Sections, etc) - Presentation Drawings (Photoshop) - Site Analysis, Research and Diagramming

The project derives its inspiration from the architectural shapes and fluid forms that can be found in smoke. The project started with researching these forms in an in depth manner, tackling the forms under different obstacles and conditions in order to understand the aerodynamics of gas, smoke and air using physics, scripting and physical and digital aerodynamics simulations.
