9th February 2018 – Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand’s leading hotel operator, yesterday signed an agreement with TreePay Co., Ltd., a specialised payment facilitator, to develop a system to allow Chinese customers to use their mobile phones to pay for accommodations and services at Centara properties. KILLER IN PATTAYA
Continued from page 1 Pattaya People Television has invited world music star Jerry Carlson, better known at “The Killer”, to Pattaya to feature in a special TV program produced by Barry Upton and recorded during the month of March.
Jerry Carlson is a music artist from Sweden. He plays piano and sings rock ‘n’ roll, countryrock, new country, blues, boogie woogie etc. Jerry is considered one of the top piano players and artists in this music area in Europe. Jerry started playing piano when he was 10 years old and for the past 15 years it´s been his full time occupation. He went to Memphis, USA for the first time in 1992 where he played at serveral places and also did some radio. Jerry stayed in Memphis for 10 weeks and made useful contacts in the music business that would turn out to be very important for the future. In 1993 he returned to USA and played with the sister of Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis Linda Gail Lewis in Jerry Lee Lewis Nightclub. With the help from Linda he was sent to England and where he was going to perform in a musical at West End. The

These contained other artist such as The Bellamy Brothers. This year went Jerry back to Nashville and Memphis and was lucky to record with “the king of rockabilly” Billy Lee Riley (he had a big hit with “Red Hot” in the 50´s). Other artists on the session was “Billy Swan and Barbara Pittman”. This was a live recording at Sun Studio in Memphis. It was broadcasted in the UK on the BBC. During this trip Jerry also meet Jerry Lee Lewis in his home in Nesbit, MS. During 1997 Jerry got many good quotes from the business. For example from Sam Phillips, who said he really enjoyed Jerry’s last demos and the songs from this first CD. Further from the writer of “Rock Around The Clock”; James E. Myers and many more. This year an African tour took place with shows in in the hot Sinai desert.. In April 1998 Jerry returned from the USA after a month stay. Dur-
ation. The song he played was “Great Balls Of Fire” and it rocked very well! Just about after this his first CD “Burning 88 keys” came out. It
ing a three day session Jerry recorded parts of his second CD “Honky Tonk Fool” along with great musicians such as Elvis Presley’s studio guitar player
year after that, he was back in the United States again. But this time he travelled with another artist Danny Boy Squire from Canada. 1994 was also the year when Jerry made his first recordings in Nashville. In 1996 Jerry Carlson made his
toured through Sweden during the end of 2001. The show contained exclusive impersonations of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. It became so popular that 2002 was filled with tour dates. The show toured frequently and still does. Jerry completed three albums with totally 50 songs during sessions in Austin Texas in 2003, 2005 and 2007 for Swedish country singer Bo-Göran Svensson. Jerry played with famous country-pickers such as Bobby Flores, Tommy Detamore etc. You can also hear Jerry’s piano on previous Bo-Göran Svensson releases. Early 2007 Jerry´s MySpace became official. In May 2007 year Jerry went in the studio recording 17 songs for the new album “Rewind”. 15 of these songs were released in the summer of 2008. Late 2007 Jerry produced the show “Så minns vi Elvis” (remembering Elvis) starring Henrik
Åberg. This is a tribute show telling the story of Elvis life. The show was very succesful and had 40 sold of shows in a row. Jerry continued producing “The Story of Johnny Cash” with the great Swedish actor Ted Åström the years that followed including a “The Roy Orbison Story” in 2010. In April 2008 Jerry’s fan club was formed by Justin Ryan (South Africa) and Johan Johansson (Sweden). Link to fan club: Jerry Carlson Club. Jerry Carlson and his Legends show has been touring in Europe ever since, but this year is special because of the release of an album called “Paradiso” with self composed songs. During the recording of the Special TV Feature about Jerry Carlson here in Pattaya we will organize performances at various music places to be part of the TV feature, and as such the many fans of him can enjoy some “free concerts”.
“Reggie Young” and “Robby Turner” (steel guitar player on Jerry Lee´s latest album and on “The Maverics” album “Trampoline”). Jerry also recorded his piano- playing in Sam Philips Studio in Memphis engineered by “Roland James”. “Honky Tonk Fool” gained a lot of good reviews and reactions not only in Sweden. Thanks to this he has been lucky to travel to different countries performing, in Italy for example. He has performed regularly to sold out concerts at a large Nightclub in Milano. Early in 2000 Jerry began recording his first album. 13 tracks were re- corded - two of them were live. The album got many good reviews through- out Europe. This was the biggest project ever and a total of 17 musicians. Half of the songs were written by Jerry. Many shows followed and 2000 was fully booked and 2001 as well. In September 2001 Jerry formed along with his friend Johnny Duvert a im-personator show along with Henrik Åberg. It was called “The Legends” and

AU BON COIN RESTAURANT
Au Bon Coin is a veritable institution in Pattaya, run by the mercurial José from France’s volcanic ‘Massif Central’ for a quarter of a century now On my first visit I had been warned that it would be hard to find, but I still drove past it twice in broad daylight. Hidden amongst the Pratumnak high rise condos, there it was – a faded blue handpainted sign that wouldn’t have been out of place in a mediaeval French village. You walk in through an oasis of tropical
greenery until you get to the restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored old Thai building, much of the carpentry and renovation done by Jose himself. The dining area is a work of art in itself. Fascinating paintings and artefacts adorn walls and fill display cabinets, floor to ceiling windows add to the spacious and airy feel. And how rare is it to find a restaurant where you could fit an extra table between yourself and neighbouring diners. The kind of place designed to make you feel at ease. If you are there early, there is no pressure to relinquish your table for later bookings. It’s your table for the night. So relax we did, firstly over Jose’s preferred tipple, a kir (chilled white wine and Cassis liqueur), then progressively as each dish arrived, with a carafe of very drinkable French pinot noir, followed by Calvados, Cognac(s)… Opening the door you are greeted by the unmistakable nutty aroma of browned butter, quickly followed by Jose, imposing in both girth and character. After the meal I dared to mention that I had heard a couple of uncomplimentary comments
6 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA
about the restaurant and its creator. With a Gallic shrug came the retort “if zey are not appy we take zem by ze trouzair, et ouf!….”. No word of a lie, some diners have actually seen it happen! Which may partly explain why Au Bon Coin is currently floundering at a lowly but totally unmerited and ridiculous #85 rating on TripAdvisor. Jose flies in the face of recognised good business practice in today’s tough commercial environment. He makes little if any effort to market his restaurant. TripAdvisor? He’s barely aware it exists. Facebook, food groups? Reply unprintable. On this visit Jose was feeling particularly amenable. No one present was ‘frogmarched’ out of the restaurant. Quiet when we arrived, as usual it soon filled up. As it does most of the time in both high and low season. Reputation and word of mouth has brought Jose success. TripAdvisor, buttering up customers, who needs it! We both started by sharing a dish of snails. These are usually carefully arranged in shells, but Jose prefers to serve half a dozen chunky mollusks minus shells swimming in a delicious garlic but-
ter sauce. My dining partner wondered if anyone would notice if he licked the plate clean. I chose a salad to follow, the endive (chicory) salad, just because this is one of my favourite, typical and simple ‘grandma’s’ dishes, served up at home all around France. It was superb. The shavings of quality blue cheese together with the walnut and cured ham, added the perfect finishing touch. We even shared a third entree, a slab of duck pate, as flavoursome as any I have tasted. While my dining partner went for the veal on the bone (stunning flavour and so tender), I chose the slow cooked lamb casserole served with haricot beans; also melt-in-your-mouth tender, and a
that good “the more you eat the hungrier you get”. The rest of the evening was increasingly hazy, as snifters of Calvados were followed by several ballons of Cognac. I nearly forgot – of course there were tasty amuse-bouche nibbles before, and delicious if rather alcoholic petit-fours after the meal, on the house. Truly a great night’s wining and dining, with excellent traditional French cooking at reasonable prices. Only the excessive alcohol consumption greatly inflated the bill to well over 6000 baht for the two of us. With just a small carafe of house wine, the bill would have been around 1500 baht each, extremely good value for that kind of quality. But no re-
very large serving too. Love the curt wording on the menu for the apple pie – “20 minutes wait”. Reheating a previously cooked pie or tart is a big ‘Non Non’ chez Jose. The pie is freshly cooked to order. And it was well worth the delay. The unmistakable aroma of nutmeg and cinnamon arrived before the plate was placed on the table. Topped with a scoop of apple sorbet, with the bottle of Calvados left so I could pour it on myself. Can’t remember the last time I saw that, if ever. While waiting we overindulged in chocolate profiteroles, full of quality ice cream, topped with almonds, oozing with freshly whipped cream. How did we have room for all that? The French have an expression for it, “l’appé t it vient en mangeant”. Roughly translated as when it’s
grets, and Au Bon Coin remains firmly in the top three of my favourite quality fine dining restaurants in and around Pattaya. Au Bon Coin is on soi 9 ‘Romanasia’ between Pratumnak soi 5 and 6. Best to enter from Soi 6 (Family Mart on corner), as Soi 9 is clearly marked on that side. There is also a big sign for the Romanasia restaurant on the right as you head down soi 6. Look for the little wooden Au Bon Coin sign on the ground leaning against the gate, or you’ll miss it. In high season it closes on Tuesday and Wednesday, as does its small delicatessen shop in front of the restaurant. Always book first by calling Jose on 038-364542. And best to reserve a table at least a day or two in advance. I’ve been turned down on more than one occasion when leaving it to the last minute to book!

EL-CABLES GOING UNDERGROUND HONEST PEOPLE
Every visitor to Pattaya has been puzzled by the “spaghetti electric cables” and how that on earth is able to function, well it has for many years, and the truth is that most of the cables are not carrying any electricity, but has just been left on the posts instead of being removed. Now the Pattaya City administration is taking action to gradually bring the electric cables underground. Starting in North Pattaya (near Pattaya City Hall) on North Pattaya Road from the Dolphin round about and 200 meters up to road towards Sukhumvit Road, will be the first phase for the underground el-cables construction, after that phase is fin-
ished another 200 meters will be implemented and so on. A notice has been placed on the site of this construction and it gives information about the project. It explains that during the construction near the phases traffic will be reduced to one lane in both direction, it talks about the 200 meter phases, it explains that the period of the construction will be from 19. February until 30. June this year, work will take place 24 hours a day, parking will be prohibited near the phases, and the notice ends with a polite apology from Pattaya City Hall for any inconveniences for our residents and visitors.
A speed boat company employee has impressed Chinese tourists with her honesty by handing back a bag full of cash and personal documents. Khun Arun Matayaryat age 46, who is working for the NPE Speed Boat Company found a lost bag on the beach of Koh Larn. Checking the content of the bag a passport belonging to 21 year old Chinese Ms. Zhang Xue, also inside the bag was 5,000
Thai baht and 3,500 Chinese Yuan. Khun Arun explained that she always follow the company policy to give back any lost items of tourists. As this story has ben shared massively on social media it has helped underline the image of Thai people being honest and trustworthy, and will no doubt help the expansion of Chinese tourism to Thailand. Well done Khun Arun.

HOW’S YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE?
Many people work on the principle that they would rather not know about any underlying or sinister medical conditions they may have. After all, we are all going to die one day, aren’t we? I have always said that despite all advances in medical science, the death rate will always be the same – one per person! But wouldn’t you rather have pleasant final years than ones with poor health, infirmity and aches and pains? And since by the time you are into the final straight and looking for the finish line, it would also be better if your partner was also in good health, surely. The guiding principle behind check-ups is to find deviations from normal health patterns at an early stage. Early enough that the
trend can be reversed, before damage has occurred. Examples of this include Blood Pressure (BP), as high BP can affect many organs in the body, not just the heart. But an elevated BP generally gives no warning symptoms. Another example is blood sugar. Again, it requires sky-high sugar levels before the person begins to feel that something might be wrong. And by then the sugar levels have affected vision, the vascular system and many other systems, all of which can decrease your future Quality of Life. • Amputation of a limb is a common result of unchecked blood sugar levels. • Cardiac conditions and abnormalities, be that in anatomy or function, can also very ad-
versely affect your Quality of Life, but are very easily found during a routine check-up. • Various blood tests and an EKG can show just how well the cardiac pump is functioning, and also how well it will continue to function in the future. The inability to walk more than 50 meters certainly takes the fun out of shopping, yet this can be predicted – if you have some serial records! • Another of the silent killers can be discovered in your lipid profile, with Cholesterol and its fractions HDL and LDL, being intimately connected with your cardiac status. Let me give you an example A younger man who was obviously overweight, but played golf

three times a week and had no apparent problems. He enjoyed his golf, and the beers at the 19th hole. Just like his other overweight golfing mates. This chap’s blood tests were not so good, and his diabetic tendency was now more than just a tendency. Despite the fact that he was not having chest pains, he decided to have the 128-Slice CT of the Coronary Arteries carried out. This showed three blockages. Three corrective stents later he could return to the golf course, but with urgent recommendations to get his weight down and get his blood sugar and cholesterol under control. There are actually so many conditions that can affect your enjoyment of the future that can be discovered early. Renal (kidney) function and liver function can be monitored through an annual check-up, as can prostate size (indicated by the PSA blood test) or breast tumors (by mammogram). Hopefully you are now thinking about an annual check-up. And not just thinking about a check-up for yourself, but for your partner as well. Catch anything early and you have given yourself the chance to correct it – and get a better Quality of Life in the forthcoming years.
defibrillator and emergency medicines, etc. Our rescue team of doctors and nurses will give primary treatment to the patients as if they were in the hospital’s emergency room. Problems at sea are covered by the fully equipped Hydrolance taking only 15 minutes from Koh Larn to Bali Hai Pier. Air transport is directed to our approved Helipad on the roof of E Building. The patient transfer service via helicopter is available 24 hours a day. The Trauma Center is the hub for emergency transport and treatment. We hope you never need us, but if you do, we are here and we are ready.

YOUR PASSPORT Over the years I have seen many clients who approach me about a case wherein the police have taken and are withholding their passport. One such case was with a US man who had been in a relationship with a local girl who
was abusive and controlling; whenever the US man wanted to leave her she would hurt herself in some way and then put the blame on him. This happened a few times with her later admit-
ISSUE 599 ď Ź MARCH 2018
ting that she lied to the man and her family, but the latest incident involved her going to the police. At the police station she claimed that the US man had physically abused and threatened to kill her during an argument. After hear-
ing this, the police acted and arrested the man taking him to the police station for questioning. During this process the US man’s passport was confiscated until the case was resolved as a guaran-
tee that he would not run away from the case. What the US man did not know was that the police have no legal right to take his passport from him. A passport is the property of its respective issuing country
and when abroad it is taken care of by the embassy and the only authority high enough to order its confiscation is the Thai Provincial Court. Even when a passport is confiscated in court normally you
will be able to reclaim it on bail, for example; if you are in the middle of a case and you need to leave the country the court will allow you to bail out your passport for a fee which is returned when you come back to the Kingdom. With regards to the US man, before his case goes to court and the judge orders him to turn in his passport he has every right to keep his passport in his possession, as such after contacting the embassy we were able to re-
trieve it from the police and return it to him fairly quickly. OUR COMMENT: When you are in a foreign country and are not sure of its laws, it is worth a little time to do some research or look for some advice. Do what you can to protect yourself by getting some legal advice or contacting your embassy, your status as a foreigner does not mean you are treated unfairly. Your passport is your ticket around the world and it is an important document that
you must have on you at all times when travelling abroad, do not hand it over to anyone who does not have the right to keep it. If you are unsure of anything, wait and request legal aide who then should be able to guide you through the proper process. If you have any questions or inquiries please feel free to contact us at any time.To contact the Lawyer please call: 08-9911-1199 or email: info@pattayapeople.com

Pattaya is very lucky to have people like Ankhana and Reinar to bring a positive attitude to our community.
Grafitti is a vandalizing pest around the works, and we can only hope that police and public authority in Thailand will prevent it becoming a similar menace here in this country. The dolphin sculptures on top of the Central Pattaya tunnel underpass on Sukhumvit Road is indeed a beautiful entrance to Pattaya for visitors to our city. Now teenagers had sprayed the dolphins with paint in what these
hooligans consider “graffiti art”, The Department of Rural Roads who is the authority responsible for the tunnel area has deemed it damage to government property and a criminal act. Local people has informed that a group of teenagers has done the damage in the middle of the night when traffic was at its lowest, however CCTV cameras might identify the perpetrators.

THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA 17
NEXT WEEK FOR ARIES: (Born between 21st March & 20th April) With four planets now in your spiritual sector, this is the time of year when the cosmos encourages you to kick back and take time out for yourself. You might find that you’re more deeply connected with your feelings, particularly those that have been bubbling beneath the surface for a while. Dreams could also be important and may even contain valuable guidance. The weekend could see you assessing your beliefs and perhaps considering using the services of a life coach to help you live to your fullest potential. NEXT WEEK FOR TAURUS: (Born between 21st April & 20th May) Feisty Mars continues its journey through your sector of change and transformation, and this could stir up issues that may have been holding you back. Taking the time to process through these could be very helpful in clearing away blockages and allowing you to be more productive. A powerful focus on your social sector hints that your friendships and love life could sparkle. However, as chatty Mercury aligns with ethereal Neptune over the weekend, it would be wise to remember that all that glitters isn’t necessarily gold. NEXT WEEK FOR GEMINI: (Born between 21st May & 20th June) As lovely Venus combines with nebulous Neptune midweek in your career sector, it might be just as well to firm up your boundaries. This blend of energies could see you giving away too much in terms of time, money, or other resources. Thankfully, chatty Mercury and its tie with sobering Saturn can encourage a more realistic perspective, enabling you to do whatever is in your best interests. Over the weekend, an encounter suggests you may be eager to get to know someone better even if their ideas differ from yours. NEXT WEEK FOR CANCER: (Born between 21st June & 22nd July There is a powerful focus on your sector of far horizons and travel this week, which could see you indulging in escapist tendencies. However, romantic options show up, too, suggesting that if you’re traveling you could meet someone special and form a close romantic bond. There’s also an emphasis on study and self-improvement. Indeed, as both inquisitive Mercury and the sun align with cautious Saturn over this week, a desire to study could lead to promising opportunities in the future. NEXT WEEK FOR LEO: (Born between 23rd July & 22nd August) The idea of change could appeal to you, but nothing will happen unless you do something about it. With a major focus on a sensitive area of your chart, you might connect with feelings that have been buried for some time, and this can encourage you to process through them. Don’t be in too much of a hurry, though, as a gentle approach may work best. On another note, with lovely Venus angling toward feisty Mars, a desire to hasten a romantic relationship may not be helpful. It might be better to go with the flow. NEXT WEEK FOR VIRGO: (Born between 23rd August & 22nd September) Other people could have a very strong influence on your life at this time, and this might be due to having four planets in your sector of relating. There are times over this week when you may find it difficult to understand others’ motives. If so, chatty Mercury’s tie with sobering Saturn encourages you to ask for clarification. It may help them to define what they want, and it will certainly help you. You may not see eye to eye with a family member over the weekend, but a compromise is possible.
ROTARY VISITORS
The Rotary Club of Pattaya had a visit of Rotarians from 3 Italian clubs, they were Cornelia Henkel, Martin Nimbach and Dr, Wolfgang Schwertner. The visitors presented their club ban-
ners to club president Premprecha Dibbayawan. There are 5 Rotary clubs in Pattaya, and the Pattaya club is the “mother club” established in 1972.

the year of the Dog and dragons dance performance was organized throughout the hotel to wish hotel guests good health, good luck and prosperity for the New Year.
18 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA
NEXT WEEK FOR LIBRA: (Born between 23rd September & 22nd October) The temptation could be to give until you feel overwhelmed. The focus on the sign of Pisces and your sector of work and service suggests that you feel it’s your duty to help others regardless of your own needs. This isn’t sustainable. And with both lively Mercury and the sun aligning with cautious Saturn this week, the cosmos is encouraging you to set healthier boundaries. You’ll have to give back to yourself at some point, and this might be the time to do so. NEXT WEEK FOR SCORPIO: (Born between 23rd October & 21st November) Your sector of leisure and romance sparkles this week, with a full lineup encouraging you to indulge in your favorite hobbies or spend time with that special person. And with lovely Venus linking to dreamy Neptune midweek, this can be the perfect opportunity for a special date. However, a quarter moon in Gemini on Friday could encourage you to celebrate the first milestone of a new relationship, perhaps by taking things further. Trust your instincts. If it feels right, seriously consider it. NEXT WEEK FOR SAGITTARIUS: (Born between 22nd November & 21st December) A very homey focus could see you stepping back from life and viewing it from a fresh perspective. With a major focus on your family zone, the cosmos is encouraging you to take the time to nurture yourself with good food, plenty of sleep, and a chance to completely unwind. Although you might have a busy life, scheduling such activities into your week can help you feel refreshed and be more productive. The weekend could bring a difference of opinion, but you admire people who remain true to themselves. NEXT WEEK FOR CAPRICORN: (Born between 22nd December & 19th January) Communication can be the key to success this week, although clarity is essential, too. If someone has something important to tell you, you might need to read between the lines to understand what’s really being said. However, with sobering Saturn involved in the mix, you could find that understanding begins to dawn, especially if you ask the right questions. With lovely Venus aligning with feisty Mars, you might be drawn to someone you sense is on the same wavelength even if it isn’t obvious. NEXT WEEK FOR AQUARIUS: (Born between 20th January & 18th February) Although the focus is on money matters, the emphasis is also on the sign of Pisces, which suggests that spiritual values could play a part in your finances. This week, the cosmos encourages you to draw a line, because there could be a tendency to be a little bit too generous to various charities. Consider whether you can afford it, and if not, you might have to change your approach. The sun’s link with cautious Saturn may help you find a way to give without depleting your resources. NEXT WEEK FOR PISCES: (Born between 19th February & 20th March) You’ll be truly in your element this week with the sun, chatty Mercury, lovely Venus, and ethereal Neptune all in your sign. Your imagination could be very much to the fore, and this can be excellent for creative activities and romance as well. However, with ties to cautious Saturn, the cosmos is encouraging you to think about the practicalities of a project or new relationship. If it fits harmoniously into your life, it could turn out very well for you.
YOUNG GIRL GANG RAPED
Miss Jenn age 22 contacted our reporter and told him that she had been raped by two men, who came to her room and was dressed as a police officer and a police volunteer. She explained that she was waiting for her friend to come and visit her when the two men brought her friend to her room, locked him into the bathroom and told her that her friend had drugs on him and they wanted 30,000 baht from her to cancel the case. Miss Jenn said to them that she did not have such an amount of money, all she had was 2,700 baht which they took from her, but kept on asking for the 30,000 baht, after some time one of the men took her friend with him out of her room, and told her that she needed
to have sex with him instead of paying the money, she was so frightened that she accepted his demand, then the other man came into her room again and also demanded sex from her. When
the two police dressed men left her room they said that they would be back as they knew her room now. Miss Jenn went to see the reporter as she was worried that the police would not take her ac-
cusations serious, however now the local police is investigating the case and has been looking at CCTV camera footage, but could so far not identify to rapists. The case continues.
SAMARITANS HELPS OLD LADY
A small group of good Samaritans came to visit an old lady who had been living on a hut behind the Banglamung Hospital. The Samaritans were Khun Worachach Empej also known as “Chet Smiling Buffalo” a Thai ex-rock band member, Khun Jaroonsak Tungkumdee also known as “Lung Tung” a local historian, German Mr. Reinar Abele and his Thai wife Angkana Abele. When they met the old lady Khun Boonruang who is 69 years old, she was smiling and greeted them politely, she explained that she had been living in a hut behind the
Banglamung Hospital together with her son and made a living of selling food items, however when her son died 4 months ago she left the hut as she was afraid of young gang and drug users who would come to her hut and steal her belongings. The good hearted visitors gave the old lade some money and dried food and would now look for a place for her to stay so she can carry on make a living for herself. We are lucky to have good people like this in our Pattaya community.

VIHARN SIEN - ANEK KUSALA SALA
One of a kind collection of Chinese artifacts and antiques The Viharn Sien is a beautiful Chinese temple South of Pattaya now in use as a museum. The museum houses a unique collection, which is believed to be one of a kind outside of China. It is made up of a three story central building and a number of pavilion halls. The Viharn Sien is built in elegant Chinese style, but the real attraction lies inside the building. This museum is one of the best places in Asia outside of China itself to see some priceless and rare Chinese artifacts and antiques. The Viharn Sien is also called Viharnra Sien, which means House of the Gods, and was built in 1987 for the current King of Thailand’s 60th birthday, King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty. One of the best Chinese art collections in Thailand Set in a well kept area of almost 3 acres, the museum sits next to a beautiful lake on the Wat Yansangwararam temple complex. The museum, which is also known as Wihan Sian or Anek
Kuson Sala houses one of the best Chinese art collections in Thailand. Before entering the building you can see a number of Chinese mythological figures and two enormous stone Peking lions. Inside the museum there is a collection of fine Chinese pottery from several dynasties, one of them the Shang dynasty, making this pottery at least 3,000 years old. Also on display are the statues of 18 Shaolin monks, all displaying a martial art form for which the 15 centuries old Shaolin Monastery in China is famous. Inside the central building are the hand made terracotta figures of 8 arhats, who are the followers of the Buddha that have reached a high stage of Enlightenment. A great number of precious antiques, paintings, statues and artwork are displayed here, some of which were a gift from the Chinese government. Terracotta Army Some very unique items like a number of figures of terracotta warriors and horses, chariots
from the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi as well as a golden throne can be viewed. This is one of the very few places where a terracotta army like this can be seen, especially outside of China. Apart from that the museum houses a large number of other items, such as granite carvings, old paintings, bronze and earthenware, sculptures of Chinese Gods, Buddha statues and a jade statue of Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Some items are from the famous Chinese Ming dynasty. One section of the Viharn Sien is dedicated to Thai art and history. Here you can see a number of paintings showing the history of some of Thailand’s great Kings, such as King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and King Taksin, under whose rule Siam was freed from Burmese occupation. Apart from a museum, the Anek Kuson Sala, the Thai name for Viharn Sien, is also a place for worshipping Chinese Gods. Food and drinks are available outside the museum. A trip to Viharn Sien can be ideally com-
A 60 years well dressed Thai man has been questioned by Pattaya Police after a local hotel reported a theft from the hotel of 34,000 baht in various currencies. The man denied the charges of theft, but the police found out looking into his criminal history that he was wanted on an arrest warrant from Surathani province in the South of Thailand. The police let the man know that he will be charged in this case. It also came
to light that a Russian man had been stealing from the same ho-
bined with Yansangwararam temple and Buddha Hill (Khao Cheejan) or Nong Nooch tropical gardens, which are all close to the museum. How to get to Viharn Sien Viharn Sien is located on the same grounds as Yansangwararam temple complex off Sukhumvit road on the kilometer 160 exit. It is almost 20 kilometers from Pattaya city. Best way to get there is by private taxi; most hotels will be able to book one for you. Make sure you agree on the price before leaving. An alternative would be by songthaew, that can be chartered as a taxi, in which case you can give your bargaining skills a try to get a good price. Admission & opening hours Viharn Sien is open daily from 8 am until 5 pm. Admission is 50 Thai Baht per person. Please dress appropriately. DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:Risks of Sitting Too Much Don’t let long hours on the sofa wreck your health. Here are some important reasons to get up and stretch your legs- Dr.Kamaljit Singh. 1. It Hurts Your Heart: - Scientists first noticed something was up in study that compared two similar groups: transit drivers, who sit most of the day, and conductors or guards who don’t. Though their diets and lifestyles were a lot alike, those that sat were about twice as likely to get heart disease as those that stood. 2. It Can Shorten Your Life: You’re more likely to die earlier from any cause if you sit for long stretches at a time. It doesn’t help if you exercise every day or not.
Of course that’s no excuse to skip the gym. If you do that, your time may be even shorter. 3. Dementia Is More Likely: If you sit too much, your brain could look just like that of some with dementia. Sitting also raises your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, which all play a role in the condition. Moving throughout the day can help even more than exercise to lower your risk of all these health problems. 4. You’ll Undo All That Exercise: - The effects of too much sitting are hard to counter with exercise. Even if you work out 7 hours a week- far more than the suggested 2-3 hours- you can’t
reverse the effects of sitting 7 hours at a time. Don’t throw away all that hard work at gym by hitting the couch for the rest of the day. Keep moving! 5. Your Odds of Diabetes Rise: - Yup, you’re more likely to have it, too, if you sit all day. And it isn’t only because you burn fewer calories. It’s the actual sitting that seems to do it. It isn’t clear why, but doctors think sitting may change the way your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that helps it burn sugar and carbs for energy. 6. You Could Get DVT: - Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot form in your leg, often because you sit still for too long. It can be serious if the clot breaks free and
lodges in your lung. You might notice swelling and pain, but some people have no symptoms. That’s why it’s a good idea to break up long sitting sessions. 7. You’ll Gain Weight:- Watch a lot of TV? Surf the web for hours on end? You’re more likely to be overweight or obese. If you exercise every day, that’s good, but it won’t make a huge dent in extra weight you gain as a result of too much screen time. 8. Your Anxiety Might Spike: - It could be that you’re often by yourself and engaged in a screen based activity. If this disrupts your sleep, you can get even more anxious. Plus too much alone time can make you withdraw from friends and loved ones, which is linked to social anxiety. Scientists are still trying to figure out the exact cause. 9. It Wrecks Your Back: - The seated position puts huge stress on your back muscles, neck and spine. It’s even worse if you slouch. Look for an ergonomic chair—that means it’ll be the right height and support your back in
the proper spots. But remember: no matter how comfortable you get, your back still won’t like a long sitting sessions. Get up and move around a minute or two every half hour to keep your spine in line. 10. It Leads to Varicose Veins: - Sit for too long and blood can pool in your legs. This puts added pressure in your veins. They could swell, twist or bulge— what doctors call varicose veins. You may also see spider veins, bundles of broken blood vessels nearby. They usually aren’t serious, but they can ache. Your doctor can tell you about treatment options if you need them. 11. If You Don’t Move it, You Could Lose it:- Older adults who aren’t active may more likely to get osteoporosis (weakened bones) and could slowly become unable to perform basic tasks of everyday life, like taking a bath or using the toilet. While moderate exercise won’t prevent it. You don’t have to go out and run a marathon or take up farming to stay mobile in your golden years. Just don’t plant yourself on the
couch for hours at a time. 12. Your Cancer Risk Goes Up: - you may be more likely to get colon, endometrial or lung cancer. The more you sit, the higher the odds. Older women have higher odds of breast cancer. That doesn’t change if you’re super active. What matters is how much you sit. 13. How to Take a Stand:Work more movements into your day: Stand up and stretch every half hour or so. Touch your toes. Take a stroll around the office. Stand at your desk for part of the day. Get a desk that raises or make your own; Set your computer on top of a box. Talk to your boss about a treadmill desk. All these things can help stop negative effects of uninterrupted sitting and keep you on the road to Good Health. For More Details Contact: Dr.Kamaljit Singh M.D., PhD Chief Consultant.
JERRY CARLSON – NEW MATERIAL – EXCLUSIVE
The ever popular ‘Jerry Lee Lewis’ style tribute act known as Jerry Carlson is coming back to Pattaya. However, there is more to the native of Sweden than just copying those evergreen Rock & Roll classics. Recently he has been writing and recording new material which he hopes to be able to showcase on his trip to Pattaya in March. I, Barry Upton, caught up recently with my good friend Jerry in Swe-

den. Barry: Where are you performing at the moment? Jerry: Actually, I’m on a duty free merchandise boat that goes between Sweden and Finland doing three shows a day but I’m able to spend a couple of hours in Stockholm each time I return to Sweden. Barry: Are you excited to be returning to Pattaya? Jerry: Yes, and particularly because I’m able to play different
songs that the people there know well but that Scandinavian audiences are not so familiar with plus I’m bringing my drummer over as well which opens up my repertoire. Barry: Another exciting thing for you is your new album? Jerry: Actually it’s a six track E.P. with songs I’ve recorded over the last two years. The full album will come out later this year. One of the songs has Jerry Lee Lewis’s legendary guitarist playing fiddle on a very sad song called ‘Graveyard Of Love’. Barry: So are they all original songs? Jerry: Yes, all original and the title of the E.P. is Pariso which is a kinda Spanish for heaven above. I wont get into details about the title song but you will get a picture when I perform it. It has a Cuban style. Barry: Aha, cos you love that Latin piano sound? Jerry: Yes, trumpets playing, palm trees swaying, that’s the closest thing to heaven. Most of the songs are inspired by my trip to Cuba such as ‘San Fuegos’ which means a hundred flames in English. I started getting influ-
ences from Cuban music in 2011 when I went there. Barry: The Latino style suits a warm climate like Pattaya but how does it fare in Sweden? Jerry: I havn’t approached Swedish audiences with it yet but will do at some point. I think they’ll like it because no one records this style in Sweden….not that I know of. Maybe it’s the next step after Country and Rock & Roll because it’s a bit more emotional. Barry: So maybe people should come to your gigs wearing Havana style hats. Jerry: Ha ha…yeh, and maybe smoking a Cohiba cigar. I smoked them for four days in Cuba and had to stop after too much coughing. Now I just smoke a wooden one. Barry: So, we are looking forward to seeing you play in Pattaya again? Jerry: Thanks, I’m really looking forward to seeing all my friends again there. Catch Jerry on his run of shows here in Pattaya mid March. Listen to 96FM Pattaya People Radio and the TV Events and Gig Guide for updates.

ISSUE 599 MARCH 2018
However, BP stressed that this scenario is one of six possibilities forecasted. Although, all scenarios see a decrease in oil demand within the next 10 years. The news comes despite increased drilling and oil expansion in the US, which is offsetting an OPEC-led deal to curb production to boost prices and prevent a global glut. Furthermore, BP’s predictions are not universally accepted in the industry, with Saudi energy minister Khalid al-Falih stating that oil demand would increase by as much as 120 million bpd over the next two to three decades.
an “alternative” to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, rather than a “rival.” ”No one is saying China should not build infrastructure”, the official was quoted as saying. “China might build a port which, on its own is not economically viable. We could make it economically viable by building a road or rail line linking that port”.
US-led group seeks ‘alternatives’ to China’s Belt Road
World’s oil demand to peak in late 2030s, BP says BP predicts oil consumption to peak within the next decade, rising 10% before levelling off as demand for more renewable sources of energy - such as self-driving electric vehicles - continues to grow. The world currently consumes around 100 million barrels per day, with peak demand expected to hit 110.3 million bpd by 2035 before plateauing and falling in the run up to 2040. BP’s annual ‘Energy Outlook’ predicts that renewable energy will account for 40% of the overall increase in energy demand by 2040, as the number of electric vehicles in the road increases from three million today to over 320 million. On the other hand, BP’s group chief economist Spencer Dale says that “oil, gas, coal and non-fossil fuels” will each account for a “quarter of the world’s energy” by 2040. This is according to BP’s Evolving Transition scenario and assumes that government pledges to reduce carbon emissions are adhered whilst technology continues to accelerate at the rate it has been doing in the recent past. “What we expect to see in the 2030s is a huge growth in shared mobility autonomous cars ... Once you don’t have to pay for a driver, the cost of taking one of those share mobility fleets services will fall by about 40 or 50 percent,” Dale went on to say. Still BP forecasts that personal vehicles and industrial trucks to be dominated by oil,” with demand for the fuel comprising around 85% of total transport fuel demand in 2040. In fact, despite the increase in renewable sources, the amount of oil used by cars is projected to remain virtually unchanged in 2040 from the 18.7m barrels a day in 2016. This is because a decrease in consumption and increase fuel efficiency would be offset by a growing demand for car travel, the Financial Times report. “The suggestion that rapid growth in electric cars will cause oil demand to collapse just isn’t supported by the basic numbers — even with really rapid growth,” said Mr Dale, former chief economist at the Bank of England. At a news conference on Tuesday, BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley said: “The outlook here shows that the world is going to need all forms of energy. Gas has to be part of the transition, if not a destination fuel” for lowering carbon emissions.

In an apparent attempt to put the brakes on Beijing’s growing influence, the US, Australia, Japan and India are contemplating the establishment of a joint regional infrastructure scheme that would act as an “alternative” to China’s ambitious One Belt One Road initiative. First announced by China’s leader Xi Jinping in 2013, Beijing’s $900bn belt road project is inspired from ancient silk road trading routes and aims to kick start “a new era of globalisation”, covering more than 60 countries across three continents - or roughly 40% of the global GDP (as of 2017). The project aims to boost trade connect Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa with a series of of interconnecting transport networks, using roads ports, railway tracks, pipelines, airports, transnational electric grids and even fibre optic lines, thus covering land and sea. China hails the initiative as a move towards greater economic cooperation, stimulating growth and efficient trade but there are those who question as to who the real beneficiaries of such a project would be and something which will undoubtedly boost trade.
Some view it as an excuse for China to assert its global and economic dominance, with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pitching last year for greater cooperation with nations such as India as a way to counter China’s plans. Now, according to a senior US official, the Trump administration are in talks with Australia, India and Japan could join forces India to seek out alternatives for China’s Belt. However, as reported on Reuters, the unnamed source said that the plan involving the quartet of nation was still “nascent” and “won’t be ripe enough to be formally announced” just yet. Although, Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull is expected to discuss the plan in private with President Donald Trump during his visit to the White House later this week. The source added that the preferred terminology was to call the plan

Elsewhere, Australia reversed earlier losses to finish the session 37.6 points higher from its last closing. That’s a rise of 0.64% to 5,941.6 points. Having recovered over 40% of losses from late January to last week’s low, MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5% on Monday. The rebound comes after a global sell off that was first triggers by a US jobs report which sparked fears of rising inflation and higher interest rates. Last week the MSCI’s index of stock markets across the globe gained 4.3 percent last week as markets began to stage a recovery. However, stubborn US inflation data mid-week had kept some investors on edge although Monday’s figures are a clear that any lingering anxiety has subsided further as investor sentiment for global equities grows. “Its’s kind of a relief rally”, Taakashi Hiroko, chief strategist at Monex Securities in Tokyo. Chief strategist at Mizuho Securities, Nobuhiko Kuramochi said: “The stocks’ valuation has become cheaper to levels that are on par with the assumption that long-term U.S. bond yields will shoot up to 3.153.20 percent”. Last week saw US 10-year Treasuries yield rise to a four-year high, whilst the two-year US yield hit its highest level since 2008, Reuters report, as investors bet the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its next policy meeting in March. “What’s been told less about rising U.S. yields is the fact that this could reflect the impact of the Fed’s balance sheet reduction and the likely increase in U.S. debt issues following Trump’s tax cuts and infrastructure spending”, said Hiroaki Hayashi, director of Fukokushinrai Life Insurance. “The 10-year U.S. Treasuries could test the 3 percent level”, he added.

PATTAYA CRICKET CLUB
Pattaya Cricket Club was established in January 2010 by a group of cricketing enthusiasts who’s aim was to make the beautiful game of cricket available in Pattaya to all ages and abilities. The club is located at the famous Thai Polo Ground and offers 1st XI cricket in the Bangkok Cricket
League, a Thoroughbred XI (over 45’s) that play social cricket and a junior XI. PCC have an open door policy and everyone is welcome to come and play or support. Thailand National Women XI make it difficult for Pattaya Cricket Club
Pattaya Cricket Club, affiliated with Pattaya Sports Club, entertained the recently crowned ACC Women’s Premier 2014 champions the Thailand National Women at the Thai Polo Ground on Saturday in a league fixture that was always going to be a hard assignment. In the absence of the club captain Simon Philbrook due to injury his able deputy Salman managed to lose the toss and PCC were asked to bowl first on a bright but very warm afternoon. In the opening exchanges and against such stiff opposition Hamza’s length proved uncomfortable for the diminutive openers Fon and Jean and Jean (9), a reluctant hooker, soon succumbed as she was caught at mid wicket by David Callick fending off a ball from under her chin. Despite the
early probing of Thomas and Hamza the PCC bowlers failed to penetrate any more of the top order. Fon, after the initial testing examination, got her head down to hold up an end and was joined by the Thailand captain Noy who had shunned the use of a helmet. Soon the runs began to flow as they both punished anything short. At drinks (13overs) the score had reached 48/1 and the ladies were well positioned for a second half onslaught. After the break both Booby Young and Richard Harvey lengths were much more to the liking of the ladies and they duly capitalized with an array of stunning strokes all round the wicket. Lord Harvey did finally slip one past Noy’s bat to end an enjoyable innings of 39. But Fon (41no) continued with an immaculate technique and ably supported by
Yui (14no) the ladies posted an accomplished 121/2 from their 25 overs. Needing to be firm in the opening overs it was decided Andy Emery should be promoted to open the innings with John G. But sadly for Andy there was no happy ending when after a rush of blood to his head he dragged a wide ball onto his stumps for 6. John G, the diminutive Aussie feeling like a giant surrounded by Thai women cricketers, was in an altogether more dominant mood. Despite being let off early in his innings when he was dropped at short extra cover, he hit an aggressive 56 before being bowled by the wily spin of Aami. Salman contributed 23 before popping one down the throat of an expectant Pizzy at mid wicket when attempting to pull Aami and Dave C (18)
missed a straight one tossed up by Noy. When Thomas was run out (6), it was eventually left to Dan Nicholson (3no) and John ‘The Anchor’ Spiers (2no) to guide PCC limply over the line with 2 overs in hand. PCC stay top of the league with three fixtures remaining. After the game Simon, the PCC chairman, congratulated the Thai National Women on their recent success in the ACC Women’s Premier championship and presented Noy with the player of the match award. PCC would like to thank their sponsors the Pattaya Sports Club for all their support and anyone wishing to get involved with the club are encouraged to visit the website www.pattayacricketclub or the club Facebook page.
Parker starting to show some consistency again took third with thirty-nine points while Keith Norman took fourth place from Neil Jones both on thirty-nine points. Near pins went to Keith Hemmings Geoff Parker and John Oatway. Golfers are reminded of our bi-monthly trip to Kabinburi on the twenty-seventh and twenty-eight of the month. Wednesday 14th February Pleasant Valley and Soi Dao. An unusual day of golf today, eleven of our members stayed on home turf and played the Pleasant Valley course while eight others made their way up to Chantaburi to play the magnificent Soi Dao course. Pleasant Valley was in its usual good condition and the caddies made a special effort to mark Chinese New Year by wearing red and white outfits. The winner on the day with a very good score of thirty-nine points
was Ian Rattray, followed in second place by Colin Greig with thirty-seven and a full five strokes back in third was Alan Harris. Near pins went to Ian Rattray, Mike Larsen and two to Alan Harris. At Soi Dao, we played two rounds, a team comp on the first and individual on the second. The individual winner with thirty-six points was Michael Brett followed in second by Keith Norman with thirtythree. The Soi Dao course is quite magnificent, arguably one of the best in Thailand. Every hole was different and challenging, the greens were very fast with subtle undulations and not easy to read and all around the scenery was breathtaking. For anyone in Pattaya who hasn’t yet played this course its time to put on your todo list. Friday 16th February Pattavia
1st Richard Baldotto (19) 42 points 2nd Les Cobban (10) 40 points 3rd Neil Carter (13) 39 points 4th Keith Norman (16) 36 points 5th Richard Mohns (14) 35 points Near Pins Gerry Cooney, Peter Kelly, and Les Cobban X 2. A field of twenty-one played the last round of the week at the Pattavia course. As always the course was in excellent condition and a slight breeze kept play comfortable, however, the speed of play was was less than optimal taking four and a half hours to complete the round. Despite that the standard of scoring was excellent and a number of very good cards were returned. Richard Baldotto of the many swings fame has finally hit on one that seems to work consistently and despite being cut two strokes on his Monday score managed to top the list with his second forty-two points for the week, and is well on his
way to a second try for golfer of the month. Remarkably for Les Cobban, forty points was only good enough for second place on this difficult course. Third went to Neil Carter on thirty-nine with Keith Norman and Richard Mohns filling the minor placings. Near pins went to Peter Kelly, Gerry Cooney, and two to Les Cobban. At the presentation, we heard some bad news that one of our members, Eddie Kelly was struck down with a serious illness while visiting Pattaya and had to be shipped back to the Emerald Isle for treatment. We are advised that he is now on the mend and everyone at the Bunker Boys wished Eddie a speedy and full recovery, and look forward to seeing him back on the golf course again soon. Two- time winner Richard Baldotto

3rd Geoff Parker ((15) 41 points 4th Keith Norman ((16) 39 points 5th Neil Jones ((22) 39 points Near Pins Keith Hemmings, Geoff Parker, John Oatway. Twenty-two golfers made their way up highway seven for the first game of the week at the Bangpakong course. This course is always in pristine condition, well maintained and watered, so no excuses for poor play. Most obviously liked the conditions with more than half the field returning cards of thirty-five points or better. Top of the heap with fortytwo points was Richard Baldotto looking to make amends for his capitulation in last months golfer of the month competition. Mike Lloyd making a quick return to golf having abandoned the game last week due to poor form may reasonably have expected to win today but was beaten into second place on countback. Geoff

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday The 16th February 2018: Pattavia ( Stableford) I quite looked forward to this day as I personally had not been to this Course for some time. The feed back told me that the Course had been really improved and it was well worth the visit. A big group turned up early in the morning at BJ’s and were soon onto transport and off to the Course. I went on the Minibus for a change and as we neared the Course the driver took us down many of the side roads I had not been down and for the last 15 or so minutes or on the way there we travelled with very few cars to be seen. Really peaceful and we were there in plenty of time. Some of the mini bus drivers are really good. The Course is out in the ‘Country’ and seems peacefull, but last time I went I remember it being in poor condition so had no made any effort to go, however first impres-
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT On Tuesday 30st January we went to Crystal Bay and played the B & C course. It was a nice day, not too warm in the morning, but later on became it hot. The course was in good condition with nice fairways and good greens. The conditions were good for good results. It was indeed a thrilling game at the end with small differences. Jonathan Pratt was the best in control and won with 38b Stable ford points. Second was Willem Lasonder with 37 stable ford points, third Paddy Devereux with 36 stable ford points and fourth Sam Gettinby

sions were that this seemed like a much improved and organised Course. Onto the first we were away on time and it soon became obvious that this was a place to play if you want a good relaxed day. The first thing I noticed was that the bunkers had been raked and were in good condition. Then that the fairways were in good condition and could be played from and the rough was looked after but was punishing. Lastly, and it is worth discussion , the greens were a bit wicked. I chipped onto the 1st green and it seemed to be going to the pin, then turned 90 degrees and went off the green. You really have to remember where you are and need to play here several times before you understand how to play them, I thought they were nearly unplayable. However talking to some of the other players they were pleased that the greens, although difficult, were reasonable
with 34 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Willem Lasonder, Bob Edwards and Jonathan Pratt. Plutaluang should be our venue for Thursday 1st February. We drove the way to Sattahip under a grey sky and we start playing the North & West Course. After the front nine the rain poured down more & more. Unfortunately we had to cancel the competition after 13 holes. The course was too full of water. Siam Country Resort Accommodation - Restaurant - Bar Siam Country Road, Soi Polo 1, 39 Moo 9 Pong, Banglamung. The location is just off Siam
on the day. I have to say with the concealed slopes they will always be difficult, but what a test. The pace of play was quite good, despite having to wait at times and the groups behind were close behind, so after a quick bite to eat it was into the transport and back to BJ’s at a reasonable time for a change, and into the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, we had a three way countback on 18 points, the winner was Mashi Kaneta with Landis Brooks in second and Richard Kubicki in third. In the B Flight, 19 to 26, the Winner was Torsten Bischoff with 39 points ahead of Graham Buckingham in second with Joe Sparwith in third with 34 points. In the C Flight, 27 up, the Winner with the best score of the day was Carole Kubicki with 42 points ahead of Karen Brown in second with 38 points and Brian Cooper in third with 32 points on countback over Daryl Evans. Best front nine , non winning, was
John Davis with 21 points and back nine was Rob Brown with 19 points. Finished early it was time for a couple of cold ones before departing into the sunset. T.T.F.N. Pic Mashi left, Carole centre and Torsten right. Tuesday The 20th February 2018: Bangpakong Riverside ( Stableford) This is a Course where the start list is always full and so it was on this day with 8 groups lining up at BJ’s to get away. Whilst it is quite a way away, it is nearly all on the motorways so it is a straight forward drive there and back and can be completed in about and hour so, not that bad. The drive up there was uneventful but the topic of conversation was the weather forecast that said to expect rain in Bangkok for the next several days. When we go to this Course we often get rain, but out of the windows of the cat it looked a fine morning, but who knows. We were soon away and the first
thing I noticed was that the rough was quite long, but at least I was over the water at the first, then the fairways seemed to be in good condition if a little long, and the ground seemed soft, so there was not much run. The greens seemed firm though and they putted very well and true so all in all the Course seemed in excellent condition, as long as it did not rain. So we moved on with not a care in the world, until as usual we came up to the groups in front when things slowed down. The day continued under blue skies and we finally finished this fine Course and a cooling shower was on the order. The facilities here are excellent, and they have also put a sort of café outside so you can sit in a quiet area and not have to go to the restaurants upstairs if you wish. The food is simple but good and a drink is also reasonable. And no rain thankfully. So soon into transport and back to BJ’s. It was soon into the results and
we had quite few countbacks. In the A Flight, 0 to 21, the winner was Landis Brooks with 43 points ahead of Rip McLachlan with 40 points and Rob Brown in third with 39 points. We then had a four way countback on 36 points that saw Walter Baechli in fourth, Rick Robshaw in fifth and Paul Weatherly and Brian Parish losing out. In the B Flight, 22 up, the winner with a fine 44 points was Henry Wong ahead of Joe Sparwith in second with 41 points and Daryl Evans in third with 40 points. We then had a countback on 36 points that saw Poland Raeber in fourth and Barry Oates in fifth. The Non Winner Front best score was won by Richard Kubicki with 19 points on countback over Brian Parish and Paul Weatherly and the back nine by Brian Gabe with 20 points. There being nothing better to do we had a bite to eat and tested the quality of the cold beer. T.T.F.N.

Call 089 253 5440 (Willem Lasonder) for scheduling or enquiries. On Tuesday 13th February we went with 3 groups to Pattaya Country Club. It was a beautiful sunny day with a nice upcoming breeze, what it made not too hot. The course was in good condition, but putting was not easy. We had a nice a day with good results. Dave Smith was in very good
form today and won with 43 stable ford points. It was a battle between Bob Edwards and Willem Lasonder who would become second. On the last hole fell the decision. Willem beat Bob on the count back with 40 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Jonathan Pratt, Allan Wilson and Dave Smith twice. Crystal Bay was our venue for Thursday 15th February. We went there with 4 groups and played the C & B course. Again we had a bright sunny day, but not to warm and a breeze. The course was in quite good shape with some wet spots on the fairways. Notable was the difference in the greens
on the front and back nine. The greens on the B-course were much faster. We had not the same high scores as Tuesday, but many very close to each other. Bob Edwards showed Tuesday already a good and he stayed consistent for a win of the day with 38 stable ford points. Second was Paul Davies with 37 stable ford points. There after we had 5 players with 35 stable ford points. Third was Sam Gettinby, beating Jonathan Pratt on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Neil Harvey, Alex Everden, Steve Shiner and Sam Gettinby.

GROWLING SWAN WANGJUNTR – 15TH Feb, 2018. Peter Grey. (No Ghost writers) Buffalo, Field of Dreams and His Holiness are all winners today! That sadistic deranged Shane Young was the golfer to suggest WANGJUNTR it will be a long time before I listen to his suggestions again. For all of you that went thru the pain and suffering that I did, or part thereof, thank The Jock! (Only Joking) It was 33 starters that were committed to today’s outing an hour and twenty minutes and we were at The House of Pain. This is a course that we do not get an opportunity to play all that often and the numbers show that it is a popular destination! Albeit the curiosity factor does come into play! Well we set out to take on the famous Jungle Course from the front Tees (White @ 6127m) The staff were quite happy to send us off in 2 groups, groups 1 to 4 from the
LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Caven Contented at Khao Kheow The week began for the Pattaya Links Golf Society with a trip to Khao Kheow to play a stableford competition on the C and A nines which were in their usual good condition. Another large field of 45 golfers saw three flights set with the cuts coming at 11 and 18, a measure of the quality of the golfers in the field. The top flight saw scratch golfer Brendan McGovern record an equal day’s best gross with his 74 giving him 34 points for third place. The top two places were subject to a countback with Masa Takano on 38 points just nosing out the second best gross of the day, Mike Allidi’s 38 points. In the second flight scores were more diverse with Irishman John Kelly taking third place with 34 points, and Stu Thompson making the frame in second for the first time in a long while with 35
1st Tee and 5 to 8 from the 10th Tee. Ensuring that we had a reasonably early finish given the drive back! The Course was in excellent condition which begs the question Why no carts on course when carts are compulsory? It was hard work for people like me that has trouble walking at the best of times. I have to say aiming my ball at the cart paths did improve my golf as the ball went down the center, and nowhere near the path. Today’s numbers gave us 3 Divisions, Div. A was 0 to 16, Div. B was 17 to 23 and Div. C 24 plus. Div. A saw Buffalo Bill Steinmann and Nat Rukkid return with the best scores of the day 36 points each but it was Bill that got the nod by way of the count back system. Unlucky Nat a great score! Third went to The Judge only one shot in areas. Div. B went to Alex Field his score
points. The flight winner was the ever consistent Tony Browne with 38 points. The third flight was even more diverse with 31 points making third place and putting a smile on Harry Lankoff’s face. In second was Larry Slattery with 32 points on his final round before some R & R in Vietnam. The flight winner was Niall Caven and he also was awarded his first Green Jacket for his best score on the day, 39 points. Another contented customer. The same could almost be said of Tommy Marshall who donned the ‘wig’ for the first time after his card was adjudged the worthy winner. Consolation prizes went to Rod Stevens (best front nine, 21 points) and Kevin From (best back nine, 18 points). Near pins went to Andrew Purdie (C3), Phil Davies (C8), Kevin From

MOUNTAIN SHADOW GC – 12th Feb 2018 P.Grey. Casa & The Viper climb The Mountain first!! Twenty three golfers were loaded into buses as we departed the Growling Swan heading out to Mountain Shadow G.C. to take on a course that has become a favorite to The Growlers over a long
period of time. The weather was on our side with no sign of rain and a bit of a breeze made conditions fine. There were not too many players at the course other than our group of golfers. Playing from the Blue Tees it would normally suit our players, but the scores told us differently! The course was in top condition and the greens slow as per the normal and the fairways were in good nick. We were playing 2 divisions 0 to 18 and 19 plus. It was predicted by this scribe that Stuart Rifkin would win on his next outing, well if you had have seen his card at the completion of play you would have thought that I did not have a clue as to what I was talking about. Well 33 points got Casa the chocolates! We then had a log jam for the last 2 positions on the podium. Taking second position via the count back system was Bill Wilkinson, then we had Mashi Kaneta taking the third and final spot. The Judge (Eric Black) was the unlucky golfer in that count back mix. Division 2 saw The Viper spring into attack 34 points saw him hotter than a sausage on Bucket’s BBQ on a Wednesday night. JC Lhoste was to take out second, one could say that our French friend is having what we would call A Real Purple Patch! Again the count back system came into play with Colm Mullen getting the nod from the unfortunate Gordon Clegg. Results for Mountain Shadow.

petition on the C and D combination, disappointing those who had hoped that A and B would be the choice. Although in quite good condition the fairways are poorer than the prime combination, the rough is much more punitive and the greens are a little inconsistent, the back nine (D) being slower and more “grainy”. The large field of 38 players was divided into three flights, cut at 13 and 22 and all three saw some excellent golf and tight scoring. In the third flight John Mason’s 32 points took third place on his return round and Richard Dobson took second with 33 points. The flight winner was the old campaigner Vic Barton for whom age and arthritis have been generous with his handicap. His 35 point return showed he had lost none of his skill in the five years he has been absent from the group. Welcome back Vic! In the top flight Kevin Rogers took third with 34 points a couple behind runner-up Andy Kelleher with 36. The flight winner was Tommy Marshall and he set the record straight after his “wigging” on the previous outing with an impressive 38 points this time. In the second flight Harry Lankoff managed another solid round with 36 points giving him third place, losing on countback to Soren Hansen. The winner was visitor Rob Knight who set the
best score of the day with 39 points and was thus awarded with his first Green Jacket. Near pins went to Wayne Peppernell (C8), Alan Walker (D2) and Len Jones (D8) with Mike Firkin and Andrew Roberts inseparable on C4. HANS COLLETT COLLECTS “A FLIGHT” TOP PRIZE
CAFÉ KRONBORG AT PLUTALUANG 19th FEB 2018 Cafe Kronborg played at Plutaluang Navy Course on Monday 19th February, with the North and West courses being the challenge for the day. The practice green gave a clue as to the high speed of the greens today, ignoring this would be costly. The nonbelievers had many three putts and the slow pace of the South and East greens was yearned for by many in our group. All in all the course was in pretty good condition, although muddy in places, with the North greens proving to be the more challenging, or maybe by the second nine the pace had been dialled in by the players. Back in the clubhouse the cards
showed the difficulty of the task today, with only 2 people beating their handicap and only 2 more matching theirs. There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 20 and the B flight 21 and above. The A Flight winner was Hans Collett with a sterling 39 points, the score of the day. Hans joining us for the first time this season and immediately taking the spoils. Second and Third place was decided on countback with 2 players having 36 points. Richard Kubicki was second with a massive 24 points on the back, only dropping 2 shots to par on the back 9, shame about the 12 points on the front! Peter Bygballe took fourth spot with 35 points and a countback of 20 points, relegating Rob Brown to the also rans due to 2 three putts on the last 2 holes resulting in a 17 point countback for Rob. In the B Flight Torben Sorensen had another good day and took 1st place with 37 points, the only other player to beat their handicap. Second place was taken by Kai Aabling with a solid 35 points, another regular in the winners’ enclosure. Third and fourth spot were decided on countback with 2 players having 33 points. CAFÉ KRONBORG AT SILKY OAK THURSDAY 15th FEB 2018 Cafe Kronborg had its first scramble competition of the year at Silky Oak on Thursday 15th Feb. This took on the now standard format of a blind draw de-
rating the 7 groups. No team managed to break net 60 and the 3 winning teams all had a gross 71, the placings being decided by application of the handicaps. The three balls faired best this time taking 1st and 2nd place, al-
though only half a shot separated the 3 winning groups. The winners were Henning Olsen, Kenneth Madsen and Fred Tam with a net 60.7. Second were Ronnie Ratte, Kjeld Jorgensen and Birgit Jorgensen with a net 61.0. In third place were Brian Gabe, Carole Kubicki, Torben Sorensen and Karen Brown with a net 61.2. WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE? ence that I want to keep happy and if that means a certain amount of compromise, then so be it. Positive audience reaction is a very healthy drug which as suggested, is addictive and applause or kind comments about what you do are one of life’s joys. I have even recently witn e s s e d bands
If you are creating a masterpiece of pop, rock, country, R&B, or in fact anything that might entertain someone else other than yourself, then it’s a wise idea to determine who that person viewing or hearing the piece of ‘art’ that you’ve spent hours, days, weeks even, sweating to perfect,…is! Yes, it’s possible to leave it to chance and hope that there might be someone out there who can get what it is you are trying to convey to them. However, in the commercial world, that big word ‘compromise’ rears it’s ugly head once more. Some people see it as an affront to their creativity to have to compromise themselves in any shape or form and cannot understand why they should. I have compromised myself all through my career from joining a successful multi hit ‘middle of the road’ band who were not one of my favourites (but my mum liked them so I had no choice really), to a recent project which has been seen on TV screens all over the world involving the world’s first international Ladyboy band (pictured). I am an entertainer and a crowd pleaser so therefor it is my audi-

w i t h fabulous equipment and being technically great musicians playing a shocking selection of music that only they will get enjoyment from. Why not compromise and play material which yourself and the audience can feel
an affinity with be it as either something to listen to or, indeed, dance to. I get a great deal of satisfaction if I can fill a dance floor with my first and second offerings when playing at a function. This means the audience is looking like they are
having a good time and then so can I with the knowledge that the right atmosphere has been created. The same way of thinking applies to musical output commercially. When creating a new act or song. I have always had the strategy of working backwards….and it works as has been proved time and time again. This means thinking about who it is who will be the end receiver of your product be it a song, album or simply a piece of entertainment on TV or stage. Many times I’ve been asked to talk to young aspiring musicians who are writing their own material. My first question on hearing their output is ‘who is your audience?’ ‘How are you going to make any money from this?’. Usually, around 9 times out of 10, they don’t know or hadn’t thought about it. ‘My friends like it’ they reply. ‘Ah, but then your friends also know how to download for free and steal your hard work’. My big piece of advice to anyone wishing to have their intellectual property enjoyed and paid for is to produce something which ‘emotionally’ connects with your audi-
will like our Abba style harmonies. So we compromised and did cover albums which were TV advertised. They worked a treat and our live gigs maintained price and momentum. With my dance music in the late 80s, I became part of Tony Prince’s ‘DMC’ DJ led organization with his labels first single release (pictured),mix albums and a designated DJ magazine to convey my material and build a name for myself. When I turned to Country Rock music for my writing and production in the early nineties, I courted ‘Country Music Television’ and ‘Line Dance’ albums to reach a Europe wide audience with my pseudo
USA style. Then in 1996, I wrote a line dance anthem called 5,6,7,8 but needed a ‘vehicle’, once again to convey it to the masses. That’s why those loveable million selling popsters
STEPS (pictured) were formed and the rest of that project is history. Here is good evidence of how the ‘audience’ was the main priority and everything that happened with the writing and creation of the act came directly from knowing who our audience could and should be. So, as you can probably derive from my little guide to being a ‘crowd pleaser’, there is much more to the entertainment business than just showing up. Big thought has to go into the material, presentation and most of all, the connecting with an audience.
ence. Then they are, not only likely to want the material together with the packaging, but will be willing to spend money on merchandise connected with it, not least paying to see it in a live situation. However, it’s no good producing something that no one is going to see or hear, it has to fit radio or TV formats, has to be worthwhile fodder for magazine features or be highly newsworthy. I learnt many years ago that for your songs or musical output to be successful, you need a ‘vehicle’. This means something that is going to convey your ‘art’ to an unsuspecting public. With ‘Brotherhood Of Man’ (pictured), this meant getting ourselves on TV and being visible in the hope that someone out there

BURAPA BIKERS FESTIVAL 2018 The 21st annual week long bikers festival always culminates with a two day extravaganza at the Chaiyapruk Stadium. Thousands of visitors experienced the wonderful array of shops, food and drink stalls, cowboys and Indians, etc., plus two nights of live music on the two big stages. This festival is in the top five bikers festivals of the world but is unique in it’s self policing policy with never a hint of trouble and is generally regarded as the nearest you get to the 1969 ‘Woodstock’ experience in terms of peace and love.
Incredible looking motor bikes, old and new, abound around the arena with horses and other side shows making a treat for all the family. The range of music performed increased this year from the classic Rock & Roll tunes played by Greek rock star George Gakis to a Beach Boys and 60s review by Endless Summer, lead by Barry Upton, then onto some hard rock from festival favourites Goober Gun and female rocksters Syteria. Many more Thai and international acts pounded out their music on the Rock Stage and the Kings

AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church.
