CRYPTO CURRENCY COMING TO PATTAYA rency system collectively, at a rate which is defined when the system is created and which is publicly known. In centralized banking and economic systems such as the Federal Reserve System, corporate boards or governments control the supply of currency by printing units of fiat money or demanding additions to digital banking ledgers. In case of decentralized crypto currency, companies or governments cannot produce new units, and have not so far provided backing for other firms, banks or corporate entities which hold asset value measured in it.

Continued from page 1 In the middle of April a group of 15 people met at Casa Pascal gourmet restaurant to enjoy the now famous brunch buffet, but also to talk about their common interest in Crypto Currencies. Some of these people have made substantial profits speculating in this new exciting phenomenon of the international financial world. After a brainstorm the group decided to formalize its activities to meet every week and keep the group open to anyone who would like to join, and this way gain more knowledge about anything and everything about all the Crypto Currencies in the world.

A big seminar with expert speakers is planned to be held in Pattaya at one of the leading hotels during the month of June this year. If anyone is interested to join the group please contact this email address: ralfwklein@gmail.com What is Crypto Currency? A crypto currency is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses cryptography to secure its transactions, to control the creation of additional units, and to verify the transfer of assets. Cryptocurrencies are a type of digital currencies, alternative currencies and virtual currencies.

The number of crypto currencies available over the internet as of 10. April 2018 is over 1565 and growing, most are similar to and derive from the first fully implemented decentralized crypto currency, Bitcoin. Within crypto currency systems the safety, integrity and balance of ledgers is maintained by a community of mutually distrustful parties referred to as miners: members of the general public using their computers to help validate and timestamp transactions, adding them to the ledger in accordance with a particular time stamping

scheme. Miners have a financial incentive to maintain the security of a crypto currency ledger. Most crypto currencies are designed to gradually decrease production of currency, placing an ultimate cap on the total amount of currency that will ever be in circulation, mimicking precious metals. Compared with ordinary currencies held by financial institutions or kept as cash on hand, crypto currencies can be more difficult for seizure by law enforcement. This difficulty is derived from leveraging cryptographic technologies.

Cryptocurrencies use decentralized control as opposed to centralized electronic money and central banking systems. The decentralized control of each cryptocurrency works through a blockchain, which is a public transaction database, functioning as a distributed ledger. Bitcoin, created in 2009, was the first decentralized cryptocurrency. Since then, numerous other cryptocurrencies have been created. These are frequently called altcoins, as a blend of alternative coin. Overview Decentralized crypto currency is produced by the entire crypto cur-

Community active people have voiced the concern about the area on the Phratamnak mountain where many people exercise every day. The area has a lot of stray dogs and some wild monkeys, and people are worries about the risk of some of these animals having rabies. Another concern is the drug dealers who apparently like to do their business in this area, also many homeless people seem to adopt the place as their “home”. If the area is unsafe for residents and tourists it will give a bad name to Pattaya.

A group of reporters representing various media in Pattaya came with public officials to inspect the huge area and found it to have many of the problems stipulated

COMPUTER CRIMES

Quite recently I have noticed a rise in computer related crime, whether it is a singular crime or an act committed in a larger crime. Such as the case of a married couple who were in the midst of court proceedings for a divorce, the husband had accessed his wife’s e-mail account on the home computer. As it was their home computer the wife had always saved the password for easy use, this resulted in the husband for-

ISSUE 601  MAY 2018

warding case sensitive files to his own e-mail account for use in court. This is of course illegal and was the wrong course of action taken by the husband, which jeopardized the divorce case as well as bringing about a new criminal case. Thailand’s Criminal Crime Act is fairly new having only been established in 2007 and it covers a broad range of computer related offences. The most common in-

clude violating computer protection or illegal access to a computer system or computer data, for example accessing a computer system with protection which is not yours can be subject to six months imprisonment and/or a ten thousand baht fine. Illegally accessing computer data such as files or e-mails not belonging to you also carries a punishment of two years imprisonment and/or a fine of forty thousand baht. This act also covers the sending of any malicious computer data either through electronic mail or by other means, this includes forward mails, transfer of viruses and the like. As digital data transfer can include a variety of information the punishment for violating this law is a jail sentence of no

longer than ten years and/or a fine not more than two hundred thousand baht. This can affect businesses as a company will be held responsible if it in any ways consents to a violation committed on a company owned computer system and will be subject to the same penalty as the perpetrator. The computer crime act also covers cyber defamation; where any person who makes

publicly accessible computer data wherein a third parties picture appears edited in a way that can cause damage to that party’s reputation is subject to no longer than three years imprisonment and/or a fine of not more than sixty thousand baht. The Computer Crime Act is a new act which is very broad and not well defined, by knowing what is and isn’t punishable by law you

can ensure your daily computer activities are not putting you at risk. Be careful when interacting with computer data of which you don’t know the source of and always stay on your guard. DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:Acupressure for- Enlarged Prostate: A simple treatment using Acupressure Point Acupressure to treat enlarged prostate can be very effective. An enlarged prostate causes urination problems. 40% of men over age 50 are troubled by this condition, by the age of 70, 90% man are affected. At early stages, the symptom of an enlarged prostate is frequent urination, especially at night. Later on, urination becomes difficult; eventually, this can lead to urinary retention and inability to urinate. Prostate Enlargement Symptoms The continuous decrease in size of the urethra due to increment in size of prostate gland can cause trouble while urinating. Some men experience pin in bladder or a

burning sense while urinating, blood in the urine. Men with BPH have symptoms of the disease. The symptoms may be listed as follows: * A weak urine stream * Difficulty starting urinating * Dribbling at the end of urinating * Needing to urinate two or more times per night * Inability to urinate * Incomplete emptying of your bladder * Incontinence * Pain with urination * Blood in urine * Slowed or delayed start of the urinary stream * Straining to urinate * Strong and sudden urge to uri-

nate * Prostate Enlargement Causes The actual cause behind prostate enlargement is not known. Factors like changes in the cells of the testicles and aging are responsible for growth of the prostate gland. The likelihood of development of an enlarged prostate increase with age. The exception to the problem of prostate enlargement are the men who had their testicles removed at a young age (may be because of testicular cancer). There is another condition in which the prostate gland may shrink in size instead of enlargement. This happens when the testicles are removed after a man develops

BPH. As the number of cells increases, the prostate grows larger. However, it is unknown about the precise reason for this increase. During the early stage of prostate enlargement, the muscles of the bladder become thicker and urine is forced through the narrowed tube of urethra. This results in in-

creased sensitivity of the bladder muscle, thus causing a need to urinate more frequently. As the size of the prostate increases and the urethra gets squeezed, resulting into the bladder getting problem in becoming completely empty. Prostate Enlargement Treatment

The treatment of the problem will be based on how bad the symptoms are. Your doctor will also consider other medical problems you may have. If the prostate enlargement condition worsens and symptoms like blood in the urine are present, consult a doctor immediately. Read more on page 21

ber to try not to drink anything at least 2 hours before bedtime. * Spicy foods * Curries, chili, hot sauces can make tasty meals but men with an enlarged prostate need to be wary of spicy foods like these, as they can irritate the bladder and prostate, causing urinary symptoms associated with BPH. * Dairy * A low fat diet is a recommended way to help relieve BPH symptoms. Dairy is typically high in saturated fats as well as inflammatory chemicals which can worsen your symptoms. Reducing your dairy intake or switching to soya alternatives are a good idea. Worried about the suspected estrogenic effects of soya? * Alcohol * Avoiding alcohol is recommended as it acts as an irritant in the bladder and prostate, resulting in the need to urinate frequently. There is, however, some evidence that moderate alcohol consumption can help reduce the risk of BPH, but the key word here is moderation! * So watch what you eat and drink, look out for foods which aggravate your BPH symptoms or

Continued from page 20 Men over 50 years of age should have their prostate gland checked annually by a physician even if they have no symptoms. This procedure allows your doctor to roughly estimate the size and consistency of the prostate. You can have your urine check for blood or any signs of infection. Your blood may be tested for kidney problems or sent for a screening test for prostate cancer. After the diagnosis process is over, you may be recommended immediate treatment if the symptoms are mild. And then, one or more exams may be conducted per year to ensure that prostate enlargement is not creating any problem. One should not completely rely on these medical treatments, taking some precautions can also help in avoiding the complications of prostate enlargement, like: * One should not delay urination once an urge is experienced. * You should go and urinate as soon as you feel the urge, and empty the bladder completely * Also, go to the bathroom regularly, even if you don’t feel a need to urinate. * Avoid caffeinated drinks and al-

cohol, especially after dinner. * Avoid drinking a lot of fluid all at once. * Don’t drink any fluid before 2 hours of bedtime. * Cold weather and lack of physical activity may worsen the condition. * Keep yourself warm and exercise regularly. Foods to avoid: * Red Meat * You may love your steak but the problem with meat is that it elevates levels of arachidonic acid in your body, and that, in turn, increases inflammation, the very thing your enlarged prostate does not need. Choosing alternatives such as lean meat and fish is a better option for men needing to reduce inflammation of the prostate. * Eggs & Poultry * A study published in the January 2006 issue of Urology which explored the connection between food and the increased occurrence of BPH symptoms, found that eating eggs and poultry appeared to increase symptoms, so these too should be avoided if possible. Egg yolks also have high levels of arachidonic acid, which, as men-

drinks that make you need the toilet more and try to avoid them if possible or at least eat and drink them less often. Acupressure: Disease related to kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and prostate enlarged gland can easily be treated by applying acupressure twice daily on the points of hand and feet as shown in the pictures below. tioned earlier, increases inflammation. Try eating only the egg white, as this is a good source of protein. * Processed foods & sugar * Highly processed food (which tends to include junk food and take-aways) and refined sugar all increase inflammation in your system. Cut them down or out to reduce the pressure on your prostate. * Caffeine * Avoiding or limiting your caffeine intake including coffee, tea and fizzy drinks can make a big difference to your urinary health. Caffeine has a diuretic effect, which means it increases your urge to go to the toilet. Because it can be difficult for men with an enlarged prostate to empty their bladders completely, drinking these beverages, especially late at night, can irritate the bladder and increase the need to go to the toilet. * Instead, try drinking chamomile tea which has anti-inflammatory properties, green tea which has antioxidant benefits or caffeinefree coffee alternatives such as Bambu. Another important drink for your prostate is water. It’s vital to stay well hydrated, but remem-

ROYAL PLOUGHING CEREMONY DAY - On May 10, 2018 The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient tradition observed in Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand to mark the traditional beginning of the rice growing season. The tradition has Hindu and Buddhist origins and is intended to honour farmers and bless the plants and ceremonial start to the new growing season. Spike in deal-making positive for U.S. stock market

China Q1 growth up by 6.8%

500 profits forecast to increase to around 20 per cent in 2018. Another factor why this economic climate is different is the U.S. tax law that was recently brought in, slashing the corporate tax rate to 21 per cent from 35 per cent, including a tax break for multi-national firms to return profits stored abroad. “I just view this increase in M&A more so related to the increased levels of cash that tax reform is producing,” said Lindsey Bell, investment strategist at CFRA Research in New York. Whilst this spike in deal-making can mean too much euphoria in the market, the lack of other indicators pointing towards over-confidence implies M&A could be an outlier in this respect, according to the managing director at Wedbush Securities in San Francisco, Stephen Massocca. “M&A is more positive than negative right now. If everything was over-euphoric, and people were more and more positive, then I would think it is a more dangerous indicator than it is today.”

Keep BoE committees separate – or risk failings

The Chinese economy grew by 6.8 per cent in the first three months of this year, official data shows, which is above the government’s target of 6.5 per cent. The world’s second largest economy seems to have shrugged off escalating trade tensions with the U.S., the world’s largest economy, and forecasts that growth was going to slow significantly after an unexpectedly strong trade surplus bolstered last year’s figure. However, the 2018 headwinds this year remain as previously forecasted, and include the possibility of a trade war, and also the government’s efforts to restrain excessive debt growth and soaring real estate prices. The latest data illustrates that exports to the U.S. are growing much more quickly than China’s purchases of American goods. This could, say some experts, trigger more action from President Trump, who had threatened to impose $150 billion in tariffs on Chinese products. The trade figures show a mixed picture of how such tariffs could hit China. In general terms, trade is not as important to the Chinese economy as it was a decade ago, suggesting the country could better weather a trade fight. However, the numbers also underscore that China’s exports to the United States, specifically, have become more valuable to China’s economy as it increasingly makes most of the parts that go inside what it exports. Last year, China’s surplus on goods with America was $375 billion, according to Washington, or $276 billion, according to Beijing. The U.S. includes Chinese goods exported through Hong Kong, while Beijing’s statistics do not factor these in. But under any measure, China’s surplus has been increasing. President Trump is pushing for China’s annual trade surplus to shrink by $100 billion — which could, should it happen, cut China’s entire economic output by nearly a full percentage point. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for China’s statistics office denied that China has a trade surplus with the rest of the world and noted that it was narrowing overall. He also dismissed the idea that trade frictions with the United State could cap his country’s economic growth. ”Sino-American trade frictions cannot cause a slowdown in the Chinese economy, nor change the good momentum in China’s economic

Calls for the Bank of England (BoE) to combine its financial and monetary policy committees – often suggested by politicians - should be resisted, according to a top official at the Bank. This, says Banking Supervision deputy governor Ben Broadbent, is because the decision-making processes could potentially become too complicated, which could result in some serious and difficult issues going unverified. He argued in a speech at a conference in Australia that amalgamating the two committees would have the effect of putting too much emphasis on monetary policy targets on growth and inflation. ”Perhaps we collectively fell foul of this trap, in some ways, ahead of the crisis…The risk of a rare event is not an easy thing to judge and, having gone so long without a serious problem in the financial system, our attention was distracted by the more easily monitored task of stabilising the economic cycle,” he said in the address to Australia’s central bank. Since the financial policy committee was set-up in 2010, the possibility of joining the two committees has been mooted several times by MPs, financial commentators and analysts. The main argument that they insist on is that the actions of the monetary policy committee have a considerable impact on financial stability, and vice versa. The UK government afforded the BoE enhanced powers over Britain’s large financial services sector after the banking industry was hit hard by the 2007-08 global financial crisis, pushing the country’s economy into a recession.

Investors are confident that a pick-up in corporate acquisitions will bolster the volatile U.S. stock market and does not represent a concerning cyclical sign. It’s been the strongest year to date for global mergers and acquisitions, according to statistics from Thomson Reuters Deals Intelligence. The $1.23 trillion in first-quarter global deal-making was just below the $1.31 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2015, which on a quarterly basis marked a multi-year high. That said, increased deal-making could be an ominous sign, if it means companies are desperate to find growth as the economic expansion slows down, or on the other hand, if it represents a euphoria among stock investors. However, market watchers told Reuters they believe there are other reasons for this latest increase in mergers and acquisitions, such as U.S. tax reform incentives and wanting to make the most of relatively low interest rates. Chief global investment strategist at Charles Schwab in Boston, Jeffrey Kleintop said: “It’s a sign we’re late in the cycle and it eventually gets worrisome. But in the near term it’s probably a plus in that you get deal premiums and more money employed in taking equity out.” During a time in which Wall Street worry stocks are trading at costly valuation levels, investors said companies’ willingness to make purchases is promising. Rick Meckler, president of investment firm LibertyView Capital Management in Jersey City, New Jersey stated: “To the extent you can get cash deals done, it provides a lot of support for the market. “It takes out equities, where holders are likely to reinvest in other stocks, and helps re-establish that the prices that stocks are trading at are not too high.” In the second quarter of 2007, global quarterly deal-making reached a record $1.42 trillion. Months later, the S&P 500 started a descent that led to the benchmark index being cut by over half, as the U.S. economy fell into one of the worst recessions in decades. Chief investment strategist at Baker Avenue Asset Management in San Francisco, King Lip remembers the M&A spree of 2007 was fuelled by debt, and at that time, there were other pointers the economic expansion cycle was coming to an end, unlike now. Mr Lip said: “I just think we are not at that point in the cycle. I still think we are mid-cycle in terms of this recovery.” Investors point to strength in the economy, overall, including S&P

PATTAYA UTD. - FAN OF THE MONTH

Bernd Zimmerman, originally from Stuttgard in Germany is our ‘fan of the month’. Not only does he attend every Pattaya Utd. fixture, home and away, but has got to know the players personally and has a deep affection for the club. Here he is pictured brandishing his trademark yellow and red cards which get shown to the ref-

eree during each match when he feels one should be shown to an opposing player. His humour during each game is a delight for the fans that sit near him and his passion for the game, infectious. He is well known for standing up and shouting ‘Hollywood’ whenever a player tries to play up or overact to a foul. Bernd, we salute you.

Results in April were mixed for the club with two away defeats to Changrai Utd. And Nakhon Rachasima, one home win against Chonburi with only the one goal from Chayawat Srinawong in the second minute, and a 3-3 draw at home to Ubon UMT FC. This recent Ubon game at the Dolphins stadium should have

been wrapped up in the first half but Pattaya only managed one first half goal against a club at the bottom of the Thai Premier league. The second half saw the scoreline swaying one way and then another with the away team at one point winning 3-2. The final 3-3 result only gave Pattaya Utd one point rather than the expected three and the team’s seemingly lack of enthusiasm to feed the ball to star striker Lukian was the main reason the club has dropped to just below mid table. Coming up on May 20th, Pattaya Utd will be hosting the top team in the Thai Premier League, champions Buriram Utd. A big crowd is expected for this so get your tickets as early as possible. KHAOYAI GOLF CLUB SPECIAL OFFER FOR PSC MEMBERS !!

Khaoyai Golf Club is a championship golf course located within Khao Yai National Park, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. This place is the masterpiece of Jack Nicklos, an iron legend, which comes with challenging layout, designed accordingly to the beauty of natural, mountainous, fresh climate of Khao Yai on over 720,000 square meters area. Coming here in November or during winter will surely give you unforgettable memory in your lifetime.

BUNKER BOYS Monday, April 9th Greenwood 1st Michael Brett (16) 35 points 2nd Colin Greig (8) 35 points 3rd Les Cobban (8) 35 points Near pins Andy Brady, Jimmy Carr, Frank Quinlan. A new weeks golf got off to a flying start with our monthly rainbow round played at the Greenwood course. We were allocated A and C nines as the B course is undergoing routine maintenance and will be out of play for a further two months. That said the C nine is also having work done with some of the greens cored and sanded recently bit still playing nicely. It didn’t seem to matter too much which tee was chosen today as compared to Parichat where it was crucial to choose the most appropriate tee on each hole. Some played all six blues straight away and still man-

Khaoyai Golf Club is located in Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Within a few-hour-drive along Mitraphap Road, you’ll get to experience a stunning golf course and nature at this place. Moreover, after your drive, you can visit Khao Yai National Park and other popular destinations like Palio Khao Yai and Primo Piazza. We recommend coming here in November, especially in the morning, as you’ll be able to truly indulge in an em-

aged to score well. Even though a nice cool breeze blew all day it didn’t keep the pesky fruit flies away so they were a major distraction, in your eyes and ears, and up your nose. It is unusual for all the placed players to end up on the exact same number of points and so it was today. Michael Brett took first on thirty-five points with nineteen on the back nine. Second, went to Colin Greig with thirteen on the last six while Les Cobban too third with twelve on the last six. Near pins went to Frank Quinlan, Jimmy Carr, and Andy Brady who is currently leading the race for golfer of the month. Stanley X 3 Our midweek game was played at the ever popular Bangpra course where eleven players took part. The weather was not as hot as recently and a cool breeze kept things relatively comfortable. The course was in very good condition but the greens although quicker than last time we played there were slow by Bangpra standard. There were very few people on the course so the round was played at a good pace. Scoring was a bit on the low side but to be expected on this difficult course. Jimmy Carr took the chocolates today with a score of thirty-five points. Geoff Parker who is starting to appear regularly in the winner’s circle lately took second on thirty-three points whilst Michael Brett brought up the rear with thirty-two points. Near pins went to Geoff Parker and Mark Stanley who in the past has taken all four got three today. Friday, April 13th Emerald 1st Colin Greig (8) Net 68 2nd Michael Brett (16) Net 71 3rd Mark Stanley (11) Net 74. Near Pins Steve Durey, Dave Ashman, and two to Les Cobban No room for superstition at the bunker as we played our second medal round of the month on Friday 13th at the Emerald course. For some reason, we have four medal rounds this month instead of the usual two. A quiet day at the course saw us finish again within three and a half hours which is how golf should be played. Another hot and humid day with little or no wind meant playing conditions were a bit un-

comfortable. The medal format sometimes brings out the best game in some people and so it was today with Colin Greig having an outstanding round with a net sixty-eight off a handicap of eight, perhaps another cut is imminent. Second went to Michael Brett on seventyone with a mixed bag which included two birdies, one on the difficult index three sixth hole. Continuing his good recent form Mark Stanley took third with a net seventy-four. Near pins went to Steve Durey, Dave Ashman, and two to Les Cobban. Winner at Bangpra Jimmy Carr. Monday, April 16th Royal Ratchaburi 1st Geoff Parker (13) 35 points 2nd Michael Brett (16) 34 points 3rd Lee Butler (21) 33 points Near Pins Les Cobban, Neil Hurst, Paul Smith, Michael Brett In order to avoid the madness, that is Pattaya during Songkran the Bunker Boys undertook a road trip to Kanchanaburi for some relaxation and hopefully some good golf. The first stop along the way was the beautiful Royal Ratchaburi course which was in pristine condition, as usual, The greens were a lot slower than they looked and it took a while to get used to the speed. The weather was very hot and humid and while a slight breeze blew it did little to help and those that walked the course were quite fatigued by the end of play. The pace of play was fine for the lead group as they were allowed to play through a local group on the tenth, however, those following groups were not so lucky and it was a slow round for them par-

ticularly the back nine. Scoring was average on this difficult course with Geoff Parker mastering the conditions best to take first place with a well compiled thirty-five. Second place went to Michael Brett while struggling with the putter on the back nine returned a score of thirtyfour. Lee Butler took the final place a point further back on thirtythree. Near pins went to Les Cobban, Neil Hirst, Paul Smith, and Michael Brett. Tuesday, April 17th. Grand Prix 1st Colin Greig (8) 32 points 2nd Les Cobban (8) 31 points 3rd John Pegrum (14) 31 points Near Pins Paul Smith, Allan Sullivan, Geoff Parker X 2 Second day of our Kanchanaburi trip had us play the magnificent Grand Prix course. As always the course was beautifully presented. As we teed off thunder and lightning could be heard and seen in the distance and with the wind direction we thought it would blow away from us but this was an optimistic view and by the time we reached the sixth hole we were in the middle of a storm requiring us to take shelter for about twenty minutes. When the rain stopped the wind continued to blow and increase in intensity making play very difficult for a few holes before it blew itself out. Scoring reflected the difficult conditions with one of our members who shall remain nameless having the rare distinction or not scoring a single point on any hole. Colin Greig came first with a lowly thirty-two points. Les Cobban took second place on thirty-one points ousting out one of our guests John

Pegrum on countback. Paul Smith and Les Cobban had a near pin each whilst Geoff Parker had two. Thursday, April 19th Blue Saphire 1st Les Cobban Net 72 2nd Paul Smith Net 72 3rd Jim Carr Net 73 Due to a unique set of circumstances which should never again be repeated our numbers for today’s round at Blue Saphire were down on what was expected. A tough course with medal format made for a challenging round. The course would benefit greatly from some T L C. and plenty water. Warm humid conditions were once again the order of the day. The winner on the day was Les Cobban with a stylish net seventy-two beating Paul Smith into second place on countback. Friday 20th Evergreen Hills 1st Paul Smith 40 points 2nd Alan Sullivan 38 points 3rd Les Cobban 36 points A very nice course at reasonable rates, Evergreen Hills was the venue for Fridays round. Similiar weather, hot and humid had little effect on those in the winner’s circle with the winners scoring well. First on the day was the ever consistent Paul Smith who returned a card of forty points of a very low handicap, a very creditable round. Second place went to Alan Sullivan who also scored well with a round of thirty-eight. Third went to Les Cobban with thirty-six. The most consistent players of the tour were Paul Smith and Les Cobban. Geoff Parker winner at Royal Ratchaburi.

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Thursday April 05, Pattavia – St John and Dave Top Pattavia Scorefest This Thursday, Friday our normal day being a Holiday, eighteen golfers met at BJ’s Lodge to try their luck at Pattavia. The number would be higher but many were in Georgia hoping to get their last minute invitation to play in The Masters. Such a surprise none of them got called. The rest took the drive out to Pattavia, which is not such an arduous journey as it used to be. The course could be listed in good-to-very good condition. There were no complaints about the fairways, and the usually ultra-slick greens were a little more manageable, though still difficult. The only universal complaint was condition of the bunkers, with

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Beautiful Soi Dao We went on Monday and Tuesday to Soi Dao. It is always a sensation to be there. coarse gravelly sand making them quite difficult. The other comment is ‘it’s that time of the year’, where endless buzzing fruit flies can make one want to scream at times. Pattavia is usually a scoring course and this day was no exception. If you didn’t at least match your handicap you were part of the audience, not part of the show. A-Flight (0-19): John Davis (c/ h 15) continued his long run, this time taking first place on countback over Alan Sullivan (17) with 38 points. Mashi Kaneta (16) rounded out his flight with 36 points. B-Flight (20+): Dave Cooper (27) had the high score of the day with a most excellent 39 points. Awesome Dave! Graham Buckingham (22) had a fine 37 points, followed by Jim Ferris (25) with 36. Good scores all.

Best Nine (non winner): Karen Brown and Gordon Clegg had best non-winning 9-hole scores. Tuesday the 10th April 2018 : Bangpra ( Stableford) I like this time of the year as the ‘High Season’ sort of winds down and the ‘Low Season’ wends its way in. Multiple reasons why the ‘Low Season’ is by far my preference, mainly of course is the fact that the Golf Courses are much quieter and also much more financially viable to play. Or cheaper. Whilst we all love to see those who visit once a year the smaller numbers playing this time of the year tends to make the day much sweeter and go somehow much easier, while to organize much simpler. Whilst not all agree with this position, after many years I look forward to April and know not only will the golfing day be shorter and cheaper, but I will not

warm sunny day. The course was in very good condition, but the greens were difficult to play. The Songkran promotion was a pleasant surprise. It was an enjoyable day. It was the last game of George Gamble before returning to Europe and he showed a motivating ambition. He won today with 36 stable ford points. Second was Neil Harvey with 34 stable ford points and third Sam

arrive in the morning to multiple calls of people with upset tummies, or stuck in bed with hangovers. As if golfers would!!!. So here we are all ready to nip up the road to Bangpra, tee off at 1000 hrs., with 4 Groups, and with a really good Greenfee, when in the ‘High Season’ we teed off at 1140 with 9 Groups and drove back up Sukhumwit in the dark as Route 7 was blocked with traffic. Plus then a much bigger Greenfee. Happy Days. Quick book in and off to the start where we were able to get off nice and early as the group in front were on the green of the first hole. So off we go and what a lovely day. The fairway was well grassed and a nice breeze blew that just cooled you down nicely. The green at the first was at a nice speed and those who have played this Course know it can be

so fast to be close to unplayable. In fact as we played the Course the greens were slow for them, but really good for the average player. We also found that all the fairways were well grassed and slower than normal and were a bit soft underfoot. This is a mature Course so the wildlife is abundant and you are likely to see many surprising animals. With great weather and a Course that was really good to play we were soon around, but not without several visits from out monkey friends. You had to be awake to keep them away from the carts and they did get into the carts a couple of times. Still, A great day was had by all. The roads were quiet on the way back and we were soon back at BJ’s. Early into the results we only had a single flight. The Winner with

36 points was Dave Cooper ahead of Rita Zoebeli with 34 points in second and Andre Van Dyk in third with 33 points. We then had a countback on 32 points that saw John Davis in fourth and Dick Warberg in fifth. The Non Winners, best front nine was Nigel Perry and back nine was Bob Britton. So what next?, well it seems to be a two weeks off from Golf as nearly all the Players depart Town to get away from getting drowned for the next several days. The ‘Fun Shift’ will move in. This getting drowned for a couple of days can be quite fun, once or twice, but for the length of time we have to be wary of late, most depart. I shall be dodging out now and again to eat, so to all have a good couple of weeks and do not wake me up for a fortnight or so. T.T.F.N.

Gettinby with 33 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for George Gamble and Stan Rees.

Patrick Devereux on fire at Treasure Hill On Tuesday 17th Aril we went to Pleasant Valley. It was a cloudy day with a black sky, but we were lucky to have only one short shower. The course was in good condition and the weather was good and not too hot. We had an enjoyable game. We just finished on time before the rain. As soon we were in the clubhouse it was pouring down. Dave Smith was the most consistent and won with 34 stable ford points. Sam Gettinby became second with 32 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Dave Smith, Paul Davies and Neil Harvey twice.

Treasure Hill was our venue on Thursday 19th April. It was a warm sunny and cloudy day. During our game the weather changed and the black sky came again. But again were we lucky and had no rain during our game. The course was in perfect condition. Many of us had problems with all the trees in the fairways. Today Paddy Devereux showed his good form. He played very strong and won with 42 stable ford points. He made a beautiful birdie on the second hole par 3. Second was again Sam Gettinby with 32 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Paddy Devereux, Brian Chapman and Sam Gettinby.

GROWLING SWAN EASTERN STAR – GC – 5th APRIL 2018 PRH Grey. Steele steals the show, yet again! “All golfers Please when putting your name down for Golf read the DEPARTURE TIME” It was not what you would call a large gathering to take on Eastern Star Golf Club, but two late Pull Outs made the numbers a little shy. The Course was, from all reports, in very good nick. We choose to play lift clean and place as there had been some rain over the last few days. We played from the Yellow tees and the weather was quite warm with a cool breeze affording some welcome relief on the front 9 but a little later there was no breeze at all and conditions became. S/ford Vallance Beats the Water and Khao Kheow With Songkran water splashing all around, 9 hardy golfers turned out for the trip to the beautiful Khao Kheow golf course. Pattaya has been experiencing very hot and wearing conditions of late, and today was more of the same. However, this course was once again presented in wonderful condition. Shooting a good score here can be difficult, but today, on his return, Gordon Vallance flew out of the blocks to pile on a great 41 points. This set him head and shoulders above the minor placegetters. On another day golfers would be

It was never wrong it’s just that I could not understand the prices being as low as they were. It was 17 that set out’ unfortunately a couple of late pull outs that left us with the 17. It ended up around B1000 (all in) sharing a cart. I personally believe at that price playing that course it’s a great offer, and given the response (by the golfers) we will play that more of-

with 22 points, but then a gigantic form crash saw him manage just 9 points for the second nine for a total of 31 points. We will check the records but think 31 points is the highest score ever to win the “wig”. All back safe albeit a little damp to see Gordon trying on the Green Jacket. Fairways were in good nick, but I have to say the greens could do with a bit of work. Bunkers were raked although I noticed my caddy was not keen on doing this, maybe it had to do with the amount of times I visited the bunkers. My playing partner, Tommy Gress showed me that if you hit the ball hard enough it can bounce out of or through the bunker! It has been dually noted, with the management from King Naga being in contact with The Growling Swan. “Carts are not dodgem cars and should not be treated in that fashion”, Troy Pickford. Well it was Alex Fields day with 7 Pars and 2 Bogeys on the front nine, rumor has it that alcohol may have put an end to that great start. S/ford John Coetzee Blitz’s Pleasant Valley Songkran finished, everyone dried out, and some tired out, and golf was on again. Thirteen golfers saddled up for a trip to Pleasant Valley to see what awaits us at this course that can be very good or a little shabby. Unfortunately, the majority opinion was that it is the latter, and the price of 1850 bht all in is too high for a course that needs some TLC. Fairways were quite ok, but the greens varied in pace from hole to hole, so maybe that can be fixed soon. Weather was, of course, hot. However a short, welcome shower of rain cooled things for a while. But a couple of play-

ers found conditions just fine. Within hours of setting foot on Thailand soil, John Coetzee blitzed the field with a magnificent round of 43 points. Obviously no jet lag from Perth (Australia). Tip Briney has had an interesting week. On Wednesday he set a new record for the highest score to win the “wig” with 31 points. He scored only 9 points on the back nine. Today he has taken second place with a terrific 37 points. No crashing this time. CAFE KRONBORG JON “PATTAYA CC” DEAN EXCELS ON HIS COURSE CAFÉ KRONBORG AT PATTAYA COUNTRY CLUB 29th MAR 2018 Cafe Kronborg played Pattaya Country Club Thursday 29th March for their final round of the season, with many people returning to whence they came to enjoy spring in colder but hopefully less wet climes. The recent rains had given the

course a good soaking and playing off the front nine fairways was like hitting the ball off a water filled sponge. Bizarrely the back nine were their usual dry and hard self. The pins were mainly placed on the front of the greens in an attempt to counter the lack of any roll on the fairways, especially on the front nine, which meant overall the course was a reasonable challenge. Back in the clubhouse the cards

showed that scores were pretty good, no-one in the A flight making less than 30 points and the B flight not far behind. There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 20 and the B flight 21 and above. The A Flight winner was Pattaya Country Club specialist Jon Dean who had a superb 41 points, which I guess was pretty exceptional even for him as he took a picture of his card for future ad-

miration. A disappointed Kenneth Madsen was second with a rock solid 39 points, Kenneth recovering in style from a bad day on Monday. Third was Richard

Kubicki with 37 points, things starting to get a bit tougher for Richard with his new lower 12 handicap. In B Flight Gordon Clegg had a sterling 39 points to take first place, his recent excellent scores point towards another impending handicap reduction which will make things a bit harder. Second and third place was decided on countback with 2 players having a solid 35 points. The same two players who had the countback battle for first and second place on Monday battled it out once more. Karen Brown again finished the stronger of the 2 with an 18 point countback to take second place, Jan Lovgreen took third place with a countback of 17 points, a difference of only one shot on the countback again. Well done Karen and bad luck Jan. As the high season comes to a close we would like to thank Bjarne & Kran & their staff at Cafe

SANDY STUVIK CLAIMS POINTS IN OPENING ROUND

Sandy’s second season of GT3 racing in the hotly contested Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia last weekend with Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik piloting his new Porsche 911 GT3 R alongside Shae Davies, an Australian racing driver who is also competing in the Australian Supercars support series. The Thai driver was eager to start his second season in the series with one of the

most famous Asian-International racing teams – Craft Bamboo Racing. The Blancpain GT Series Asia is quickly establishing itself as the ‘place to be’ in GT racing in Asia with a field of 29 cars. Wednesday and Thursday were days of testing and free practice where Sandy got the chance to acclimatize himself to the Porsche. Saturday morning consisted of two frantic qualifying sessions of fifteen minutes each, which saw

38 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

Shae Davies driving in Q1, a session which was ultimately cut short, meaning Shae Davies only got 1 flying lap and finished the session in 12th place overall, 8th in class. Sandy took over for Q2 which saw the Thai driver improve slightly on pace, however, against stiffer competition Sandy qualified in 15th place overall, 7th in class. Shae Davies took the start for Race 1 and made a good start, steadily picking up positions. The pit window opened and Craft Bamboo Racing called Shae Davies in to hand over to Sandy. When the pit window closed and the race settled down the Thai racer found himself in 10th place. His pace

during his stint meant he was able to maintain his position, and bring the car home to retrieve 1 point for 10th position. Sandy started Race 2, and managed to overtake a few cars until an exuberant maneuver by a Ferrari forced Sandy to take evasive action to avoid impact. The Thai driver handed over to his Australian teammate in the middle of the race. The #911 Porsche started to make it’s way up the field and would eventually finish in 12th position. “I feel that we truly got the maximum performance from the car and the team, we made no mistakes in any of the pit-stops or in

the race, but in the end we have to accept that the BOP (Balance of Performance) is suiting some other cars much more favorably than ours. The team and mechanics have been excellent all weekend and my teammate and I are working very well together. I hope that for the next round in Buriram we will get the chance to fight for higher positions”, explains Sandy after the race. Sandy Stuvik is honored to be supported by The Pizza Company,

GRABBING OPPORTUNITIES

The Hollies, Paul McCartney, etc.. I grew to love being with a top class act and enjoyed every moment. Working with top engineers and learning my production skills as I went, turned out to be a godsend for my future life and songwriting with people who had already had a host

Seizing the moment and living in it is one of Buddhas’ finest suggestions on how to live life. To take full advantage of life’s opportunities whenever and wherever they present themselves and to live a music biz life to your full potential. When I look back over my highly enjoyable career in the music business, the one element that holds true in every success is the fact that I grabbed an opportunity to do something when it would have been much easier to say ‘no’. Being a ‘yes’ man has led me down paths to hit records and fun filled projects which were totally unforseeable at the time. One door leads to another …and so on. When I was asked to become a frontline member of the already chart topping Brotherhood of Man, initially my heart sank because they were not exactly my preferred style of band at that time. ‘Why does it have to be them’ I asked myself. However, my mother was a big fan so I gave it a go. In no time at all, not only did my status as a musician rise abruptly to ‘top of the bill’, but I was creating new ‘masterpieces’ in some of the best studios in London whilst rubbing shoulders with some of my pop idols such as Kate Bush, The Who,

ISSUE 601  MAY 2018

of hits, taught me so much. Opportunities kept coming my way and included producing acts that I had previously bought records from. Many requests for my productions were from former pop stars or bands that had probably passed their sell by dates and probably wouldn’t resurface as serious chart contenders. However, there were instances when I said ‘yes’ which opened doors to success with others. For instance, Brian Poole, who introduced me to his daughters whom I subsequently recorded and they became a regular chart act ‘Alishas Attic’. Producing a new version in 1989 of ‘Im In The Mood For Dancing’ with ‘The Nolans’ might have seemed futile to some, but that became a hit internationally in Japan and other opportunities came in to me as a result including meeting ‘Simon Cowell’ who bought me my first studio with a label deal. Million selling chart popsters ‘STEPS’, were born out of a stream of unconnected occurrences, including musically directing a new version of ‘Bucks Fizz’, that finally led me to try to write a pop line dancing anthem for a boy/girl band which was very unhip at that time. With every stage of forming this outfit, there were many times when saying ‘no, this isn’t going

to work’ would have been a money and time saver but 20 years on, they’re still going strong with a big arena tour just completed to celebrate the anniversary of their first song release ‘5678’…. what I wrote. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone is a way of seizing an opportunity and at least, having a try. This is a crucial element to progressing and getting led down paths that were seemingly impossible or invisible. That happened recently when I played 2 nd guitar to Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, formerly of ‘Guns & Roses’ and one of the best rock guitar players in the world, at the biggest bikers festival in S. E. Asia. When asked to do it I initially thought that, as a well known ‘cheesemeister’ and ‘middle of the road’ pop artist, it would be too much of a massive leap to big stage rock, especially when there are so many much better rock guitarists around than me. However, I nervously said yes and successfully did the job as professionally as I could, subsequently being asked to do it a second time the following year. I remember standing on that stage, both years, in complete amazement that I could ‘pull off’ such a task that was so far out of my usual remit and completely thankful that I had grabbed such a big opportunity with both hands. In recent years, many opportunities have come my way in TV presenting and production plus hosting a morning FM radio program for many years here in Pattaya. I started presenting radio with the ‘AND Magazine Show’ in Southampton U.K., on Radio Hampshire a few years back when I was invited to co-host with someone who was not technically minded and didn’t know how to work the knobs. I did it for free but the experience I gained led to my presenting at 96FM when I moved to Thailand. So, be a ‘yes’ man and grab every opportunity as you never know where it’s gonna lead.

Finally, here are some brilliant quotes that can help you to seize the moment. - If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade. - In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks. - As long as you are going to be thinking anyway, think big. - It’s through curiosity and looking at opportunities in new ways that we’ve always mapped our path. - Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. - Pursuing your passions makes you more interesting, and interesting people are enchanting. - Decide what you want, and then act as if it were impossible to fail. - Every moment wasted looking back, keeps us from moving forward.

- To stay ahead, you must have your next idea waiting in the wings. - A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. - A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.

- If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. - Most people miss opportunity because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them.

A BEAUTIFUL VISIT lunch served by a real life beauty queen. Not only is Melissa a wife and mother of two young sons, and not only does she travel around the world in her role as Mrs. International, but she also finds time to work for the family business in Texas and run her own charitable organization, Brave Little Voices, which raises awareness of neglected and abused children. While in Pattaya the native of

The current Mrs. International 2017, Melissa Pocza from the United States, recently visited Pattaya and during her time in our city she visited several projects managed by the Father Ray Foundation. ENJOY 96FM, Pattaya People Radio.

Filtering out the correct tracks for a fun pop radio station like Pattaya People Radio 96FM has to be brought down to a kind of science. Barry Upton has his own formula for providing an output that can please nearly everyone, most of the time. There will be those who prefer more ‘R&B’, ‘Dance’ music or other such genres but, when surveyed, by far, the Ex Pat population of Pattaya prefer a variety of easy listening fun music which hopefully excites or stirs up great memo-
