UPDATED SERVICES: WILLS & VISA

As with my experience regarding will administration cases I have run into many obstacles and delays, even when a will is written correctly and clearly states who is to receive what. I have found that if a family member, spouse or distant relative is not happy with what is stated on a will they can seek to delay the execution of the will by underhanded means, such as stating that the will itself is fake or that it is not valid as the signature is not real. Even though claiming these things cannot get the will disregarded it can delay proceedings for up to three to four years before the true beneficiaries can receive what is rightfully theirs. Also in countries abroad such as

the US it is necessary to submit more evidence than just a written will. As was the case regarding an American man who had married a Thai woman but passed away whilst back in the States, the American courts did not accept only the written will along with a marriage certificate that was submitted. They needed more proof in the form of the marriage ceremony photos along with photos of friends who knew the widow and lived in Thailand along with an affidavit from each of those friends. In trying to ease the process of executing a will here or abroad I have started offering clients the option of making a video will, which is a first for Thailand. A

video will is a very strong piece of evidence in court as it shows undeniable proof that your will is real as it shows you physically signing the will, stating the date & time and also that you are of sound mind and are not being coerced into making the will in any way. You can also give your reasons on why you choose to give what to whom and why you would skip someone entirely, which is not possible with just a written will. Giving your beneficiaries the chance to actually hear and see you stating your last wishes and the reasons behind them enabling you to pass on personal messages. A video will can be stored on disc which will last up to thirty years along with a

backup ensuring the protection of your final actions. The second service we are now offering is travel visas for Thai girlfriends, wives and fiancees to travel abroad to your home country whether it is the US, UK, Australia or even Scandinavia just as examples. There are a lot of agencies that provide this service but they charge a very hefty fee which is usually paid upfront regardless of whether it is a success or not. We can provide this service at a cheaper rate with

only a fifty percent payment upfront with the rest to be paid after we are successful of obtaining a visa. We can provide this service because we have experienced personnel who have been in the business for over twenty years, they will even know what color background you need to have on your portrait photos, as if it is the wrong color then the embassy will not accept your submission. In knowing all the little details like this we can ease the arduous process of obtaining a

foreign travel visa enabling you and your partner to enjoy a trip abroad with fewer hassles. If you have your own case, any questions regarding law in Thailand or any questions regarding our services please feel free to write in to us and we will answer any questions or concerns. DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:-

players. Because you’re naturally strong and lose and gain weight easily, your body type is wellsuited to muscle-building activities like bodybuilding.

tors don’t rely on body shape alone to know how healthy you are. They use a few tools to measure how much body fat you have, and BMI is one of them. It’s a number calculated from your height and weight. A score of 25 or more suggests you’re overweight; 30 or more points to obesity. But it doesn’t measure body fat directly or tell you where in your body the fat tends to live. Waist Size: -This is a simple way to measure how much fat you have around your belly, which can tell you your odds for health problems, like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. To check yours, line

the problem got worse as thighs got thinner. However, the study didn’t track whether the people’s thighs were larger because of fat, muscle, or both, so it’s hard to tell why they were better off. Arm Yourself: -When doctors kept track of 4,000 men between ages 60 and 79 to figure out their body composition, they found that along with slimmer waists, bigger arms seemed to predict longer life and better health. Those who had larger mid-arm muscle measurements lived longer. It may simply be that muscular arms reflect a healthier lifestyle, but the muscle itself may also help.

Pear Shape: -It combines a slimmer “ectomorph” upper body with an “endomorph” lower body. People with this shape have extra fat in the hip and thigh area. It’s more common among women, and it may be part of the reason they often live longer than men. That could be because belly fat, more common in men, is linked to more health problems than lowerbody fat. One study found that in some cases fat in the hips and thighs was linked to lower odds for some diseases. Apple Shape: -Also called a “beer belly,” it means you have more fat stored around your stomach, while your lower body stays thin. It’s more common in men, and it’s worse for your health than the pear shape. That’s because belly fat is often a sign that you have more fat deeper inside, around your internal organs, as opposed to just beneath the skin. That kind is more closely linked to heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol. Body Mass Index (BMI): -Doc-

up a measuring tape with your belly button and wind it once around. (Don’t suck in your stomach when you measure.) In women, 35 inches or more is a sign of too much belly fat. In men, it’s 40 inches. These numbers may vary slightly if you have a very large body size. Waist-to-Hip Ratio: -It’s another way to gauge the fat around your midsection. Measure your waist just above your belly button and divide that by the measure of your hips at their widest point. Anything greater than 0.85 for women or 0.9 for men puts you in the danger zone for health problems. Is it a better measure than just your waist size? The research isn’t clear. But many studies suggest that both do a good job of predicting health risks. Bigger Thighs, Better Health: -Scientists studied about 3,000 adults for more than 12 years and found those whose thighs measured less than 24 1/2 inches were more likely to have heart disease and other health problems. And

Exercise to Stay in Shape: Often, your body shape is something you’re born with. But no matter what you look like, there are lots of things you can do to be healthy. Exercise can help you get rid of deeper fat and build muscle, even if your weight stays the same. And if you lose weight, regular workouts can help you keep it off. Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. Building muscle with weights or yoga can also help. Eat for a Healthy Body Shape: -Tran’s fats and sweetened foods and drinks seem to boost belly fat. Eat a diet focused on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. And look for lean protein like skinless chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and low-fat dairy. For More Information- Visit/contact:Dr.Kamaljit Singh M.D. (A.M), PhD. What Your Body Shape Says about Your Health Your body shape can say quite a bit about your health. But it’s important to remember that it’s just one factor. People of all shapes and sizes can be healthy — or at risk for problems like heart disease or diabetes. You should see your doctor for regular checkups to test your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other measures of your health. Ectomorph:-One system separates body shapes into “somatotypes.” The ectomorph type has a narrower frame, thinner bones,

and smaller joints, and may be flatter in the chest and butt. Think of the typical build of a distance runner, fashion model, or ballerina. Though you may look skinny and find it hard to put on weight, you can have more body fat than you think, especially as you age. That’s because your body often processes food quickly, which makes it harder to build muscle. Endomorph: -This somatotype usually has more body fat and muscle, smaller shoulders, shorter

20 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

limbs, and larger bone structure. Think of football linemen, shot put throwers, or curvier women. You may gain weight easily, especially in your lower belly and hips, and find it harder to lose. This may be in part because your body is more likely to store “high carb” foods as fat instead of burning them. Mesomorph:-This somatotype has an athletic, strong build with wide shoulders, a narrow waist, and low body fat. Think of the typical build of sprinters or soccer

MISTAKES THAT CAN AFFECT YOUR CHOLESTEROLS Don’t skip getting your cholesterol checked-unhealthy numbers typically don’t cause symptoms. See how many other no-no’s you might be guilty of. ·Your Numbers: - Your Cholesterol levels tell your doctor about the fats in your blood. Unhealthy levels are linked to hardening of the arteries which can cause heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. Your number include “bad” (LDL) and “good” (HDL) cho-

week will do the trick. If you’re short of time, you can break it into 10 minute increments throughout the day. Resistance trainingpushups, pull-ups, weights—my help too. ·You Park Yourself: - Sitting too long can be linked to obesity, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It lowers “good Cholesterol, which helps get rid of the bad stuff, and raises triglyceride levels. This is true even if you

pork, lamb and full fat dairy like butter, cream, milk, cheese and yoghurt as well as tropical oils like palm and coconut. All those things can rise your LDL, or “bad Cholesterol.” It can help to trim visible fat from meats and go with skim milk and low fat yoghurt. If your LDL is high, you shouldn’t get than 6% of your calories from the saturated fat. ·You Eat a Lot of Trans Fat: Sometimes called “partially hy-

exercise regularly. If you work at desk, try to get up and move around every 30 minutes, or think about using a standing desk. ·You Smoke: - It lowers your “good” cholesterol levels, which means you keep more of the bad stuff. And it’s linked to high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Quitting can make your cholesterol levels better and help protect your arteries. If you don’t smoke, do your best to stay away from second hand smoke. ·You Ignore Your Weight: Carrying too many pounds, especially around your belly, can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) and Lower good kind (HDL). But loose just 10% of your weight and you could really help your numbers. Talk to your doctor about the best diet and exercise program to help you lose weight. ·You Eat a Lot of Saturated Fat: - This comes from beef,

drogenated “fats or oils, you find them in fried foods, pastries, pizza dough, doughnuts, muffins, cookies, crackers, and many prepackaged foods. They raise your bad cholesterol levels and lower the good stuff, Check food labels to limit trans fats, eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grain, low fat dairy, poultry, fish and nuts. ·You cut Out all Fats:- They’re not all bad. Replace saturated and Trans fats with healthier polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. You’ll find those fats in trout, salmon, herring, avocados, olives, walnuts and lipid vegetable oil like safflower, canola, and olive oil. But make sure no more than 30% of your daily calories come from any kind of fat. · You Forget About Fiber:These are 2 types; soluble, which dissolves in water and insoluble, which doesn’t. Both are good for

lesterol, and triglycerides, a common fat in your body. If you understand where your numbers are and what may affect them, you can do some things to help manage them ·You Don’t Get Tested:- Unhealthy cholesterols numbers don’t typically cause any symptoms, so it’s important to get them checked. If you find out there’s a problem, diet, life style changes and medication can help. After 20, your doctor will want to do a simple blood test every 4 to 6 years to make sure they’re in healthy range, If your levels are off, your doctor will keep a close eye on them to see if you need treatment. ·You Skip Your Workouts: Regular exercise is one of the best way to control your cholesterol. You don’t have to run a marathon40 minutes of walking, swimming, cycling or dancing 3 to 4 times a

your heart health. But soluble fiber in particular helps lower your LDL levels. Add it to your diet with a bowl of oatmeal in the morning or with oat bran, fruits, beans, lentils or vegetables. ·You Drink Too Much: - overdoing it with alcohol can cause unhealthy cholesterol numbers. In particular, it can raise the level of fats in your blood. Men should have no more than two drinks per day, and women one. If you keep that, you also might boost your HDL or good cholesterol numbers. ·You ignore other Conditions: - It’s important to understand and treat any medical issues linked to bad cholesterol numbers like high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease and hypothyroidism. If you have one of those conditions and manage it well, you may help your numbers, too. · You Skip Your Medication Sometimes: - Follow your doctor’s directions about any prescriptions. If you do forget to take your medicine, don’t try to “make up” doses by taking more the next

time. It may not work the way it’s supposed to, or it may make you dizzy or sick. Make sure to tell your doctor about any drug you already take. Some drugs can cause problems if they’re taken at the same time as other meds. For more Details contact:

THAT WAS 2017. THIS IS 2018. THAI ECONOMY The Thai economy improved over the course of 2017, recording yearon-year growth of 3.3% in the first quarter, 3.8% in the second quarter and 4.3% between July and September, the largest quarterly jump since 2013 Rising overseas demand for goods

national sales underpinned growth as 2017 went on, with the value of exports in US dollar terms rising by 6.8% y-o-y in the first quarter, before expanding by 7.9% and 12.5% in the second and third quarter, respectively. Of this, agricultural exports

and services pushed Thailand’s GDP towards five-year highs in 2017, with business-friendly fiscal policies and planned spending on infrastructure expected to support further expansion in 2018. The Thai economy improved over the course of 2017, recording yearon-year growth of 3.3% in the first quarter, 3.8% in the second quarter and 4.3% between July and September, the largest quarterly jump since 2013, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB). The board cited a rise in exports, consumption and private investment, coupled with improved returns from agriculture and manufacturing, as key contributors to growth. The positive results prompted the NESDB to narrow its forecast for full-year growth to 3.9%, at the upper end of the 3.5-4% predicted by the NESDB, and slightly above the 3.8% projected by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) and the IMF. The board had earlier given a broader forecast for GDP expansion of between 3.6% and 4.6%. Strong performance from exports Significantly higher levels of inter-

jumped by 20.5% between January and March, 19.2% in the second quarter and 28.4% during the July-September period – with the latter period seeing the highest growth recorded in two years. Manufacturing products also performed well, expanding by 5.9%, 12.5% and 9.6%, respectively, on

been on hold at 25 basis points above its all-time low since April 2015. In notes released following a review in late November, the bank’s monetary policy committee appeared to rule out any short-term increases, as well as any further reductions in the rate. “Recent below-target inflation was mainly due to supply-side and structural factors; further monetary policy accommodation therefore would not be appropriate and could result in the build-up of vulnerability in the financial system,” it concluded. The bank is expected to maintain its accommodative benchmark rate well into 2018 on the back of muted inflation, given the prospect of interest rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve, according to Chavinda Hanratanakool, CEO of Krungthai Asset Management. “The cost of business will surge if interest rates go up,” she told OBG. “Even with the gap closing for 1.5%, the policy rate may remain the same.”

the back of more favourable global economic conditions. Full-year export growth is slated to reach 8.6% in 2017, following 0.1% growth in 2016 and three consecutive years of negative growth before that. Interest rates and inflation remain steady Despite the faster pace of growth, the BOT left its benchmark oneday repurchase rate at 1.5% throughout 2017. The rate has

Indeed, inflation also closed out 2017 below the BOT’s targeted range of 1-4%. The consumer price index rose 0.7% on average over the year, below the BOT’s band. Major infrastructure plans to help drive new growth The government’s Thailand 4.0 programme, which aims to shift the economic focus away from production and towards services, is set to be a major driver of new

Competitiveness will be boosted through an acceleration of transport projects in 2018, with ground to be broken on three rapid transit lines in the capital. In addition, the government has budgeted BT745bn ($22.8bn) for more than 100 transport projects in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, the minister of transport. “The idea is to develop the infrastructure for air and sea, and make the travelling time between the capital and the EEC shorter by building the Bangkok-Rayong high-

speed rail,” he told OBG. Household debt a cause for concern Domestic consumption is expected to rise into 2018, following the implementation of tax breaks on year-end shopping after the yearlong period of mourning for His Late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej ended on October 27. According to the NESDB, private consumption expanded by 3.1% in the third quarter, up from 3% and 3.2% in the preceding two quarters. Any further increases in consumer spending, then, should have a positive impact across several sectors, including manufacturing, retail and tourism. However, high levels of household debt could moderate expenditure. The ratio of household debt to GDP stood at around 77% in mid-November, according to BOT data, down slightly from a high of 80% in 2015, but still weighing on purchasing power, according to the bank. Spending could also be affected by higher fuel inflation in 2018 if oil prices move upward.

growth in 2018. Increased spending on supporting infrastructure, research and development, technology and valueadded manufacturing, combined with incentives that include tax holidays and exemptions on import duties for many industrial inputs, are likely to spur private sector investment. Thailand 4.0 is also expected to improve the country’s regional competitiveness, with the aim of halting enterprise relocation to more labour-intensive manufacturing bases such as Vietnam and Cambodia.

students ranging from KG through to 4th year university level were given the money to cover the costs of their uniforms and books for the year. In addition to this they will continue to receive 750 baht per month to assist with transport costs and purchasing food for breakfast. A big thanks to the Mercure and Barquda hotels who provided a lunch of fried rice, sausage, egg, water, juice and a yummy brownie. They also personally decorated a note book for each of the students which were a wonderful surprise. Thanks to everyone who gave to our stationary appeal in April, as we had enough supplies to ensure

that every student received a large pack of back to school supplies. Last year our first student graduated from university after completing her course in forensic medicine. She now has a job and she is able to support her whole family who now no longer live in the slum. If you would like information on how to sponsor a child please email the Hand to hand Foundation at handtohandpattaya@yahoo.com or phone Margie on 0890936067. FATHER RAY FOUNDATION

On behalf of the children here at the Father Ray Foundation I would like to thank you all at Pattaya Realty for your sponsorship of the new soccer kits.

I can’t tell you just how pleased, and proud, the boys were when Lionel handed each boy his new kit: the boys who received the new kit are those who play and

train with Lionel at the Soccer Samba Academy and also our young boys from the Father Ray Children’s Home and Father Ray Children’s Village.

Lionel visits the boys from the Home and Village every Sunday afternoon for two hours of intense training, and while they may have

lost yesterdays matches they always play with enthusiasm. Once again thank you very very much for your sponsorship and I

PSC RECREATIONAL SOFTBALL participate. With the field set up and both teams warmed up and ready to go, the heavens opened up drenching the field and sending the players to cover. It was soon obvious the field would be unplayable for a least a couple of

Pattaya Softball Revived!! After several years absence from the local sports scene and a couple months of planning, sourcing equipment, and locating a field, it all came together for an “Opening Day” on Sunday, 6th of May. With a threat of rain, 18 eager players split into two teams and the game was on! This was a great turnout and the field location and condition made for an excellent venue. Underway it was obvious the team dubbed the “Dark-Side Taco House Bandidos” were fired up and ready to get after it, may be

due to the long wait since the last softball game in Pattaya. Over the first few innings they rack up runs against the PSC side and were leading 7 -1 after 3. At that point PSC pulled their defense together and the Bandidos were putting down Donuts instead of Tacos. By the bottom of the 7th and final inning, PSC had pulled back to within 2 when newcomers from Houston, Robert and Kira reached base and another newcomer, Gregg from Cleveland, drove the runs home to tie it up at 7! At that point the new and improved Dirk, all 6’-6" and re-

PATTAYA UNITED SLIP INTO THE DROP ZONE

After a mixed run of results in May, Pattaya United have slipped into the relegation area of the Thai Premier League. A 3-0 win at home against Sukhothai saw the team in a comfortable mid table position but following a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to Ratchburi FC and a home loss against league leaders Buriram Utd ending up 24, our local team have slipped into

the bottom five. As five teams will go down this year, a lot of work now needs to be done to avoid the drop. The visit of the biggest team in Thailand, Buriram, saw an almost capacity crowd of 5,500 pack the Dolphin stadium and the atmosphere was electric. The match itself was a high class, keenly fought contest and, al-

though the home side tried their hardest, Buriram showed too much class and were 2-0 up by half time. Pattayas’ good build up play was too many times thwarted by a poor final ball into the box although their first goal was a pin point accurate through ball which was excellently dispatched into the goal by Picha. More movement off the ball and especially in the box is required for the Pattaya team to be more effective in front of goal, essential for the home match against Muang Thong Utd.. All of Burirams four goals, including a hat trick from tall centre forward Edgar, were of a class that could grace the English Premier League and some of the skills from Diogo, who scored the fourth, were a delight to see. The endeavor of both sides cannot be faulted and despite the loss, Pattaya Utds’ fans had to admit they had been entertained and were fairly beaten by a better side. The same can not be said about the last match of May against a strong and skillful Muang Thong Utd side who, after going down to 10 men in the thirteenth minute, after a five minute deliberation by the referee who consulted VAR before sending off Adisorn Promak for violent tackles on Pattaya Utds’ Lukian, then proceeded to put four

goals past the home teams’ weak defence. The constant tactic of swinging hopeful long balls into the Muang Thong box was thwarted by their defenders at every opportunity and it was surprising the Pattaya coach never spotted it despite over 3,000 home fans see-

164th PSC MEMBERS TOURNAMENT

Tuesday 8th May 2018 Silky Oaks Golf Course, The May 2018 PSC Members Tournament was held at the Silky Oaks Golf Course with 49 players turning up to participate in the competition, Apart from the torrential rain storm I am sure all the players that turned up enjoyed the day as the course was in good condition. Due to the low number of players the competition format was changed with only two flights, A flight 0 to 19

BUNKER BOYS Monday, May 7th Khao Kheow 1st Mark Stanley (11) 41 points 2nd Geoff Parker (15) 39 points 3rd Les Humphrey (28) 34 points Near pins Stuart Tinkler X 3 Once again the weather gods smiled benevolently on the Bunker Boys for today’s round at the Khao Kheow course. Despite threatening skies all around and thunder in the air, the round was completed dry. The course was generally in very good condition with only a few soft spots on some fairways due to recent rain, and the greens were superb, probably the best we have seen recently. The round did throw a bit of a conundrum though. Mark Stanley who has recently decided to forgo

they gave us. Ron Gale with the assistance of Dick Warburg carried out the presentations and before announcing the winner’s thanked all the players for playing in this event, thanked the golf committee members consisting of Sandy McKay, Nigel Cannon, Ingkarat Chaimongkon and Dick Warburg for their assistance in presenting the tournament and also the Pattaya Sports Club Staff who

the curse of the working class (drink) and take up yoga shot a superb forty-one points with a gross minus one on the back nine to take first place. In doing so made a very good case for a healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, Geoff Parker who enjoys the occasional tipple, has a bunger every five minutes and does not practice yoga also had an excellent round of thirty-nine points, so the debate over lifestyle choices rages on. Les Humphrey came third with a score of thirty-four edging out Stuart Tinkler on countback. Stuart had the consolation of winning three near pins. 3rd Geoff Parker (14) 37 points Near pins Stuart Tinkler, Stuart Brown, Peter Allen, and Mark Stanley. Yet another day where rain threatened but didn’t eventuate, the Bunker Boys took advantage of sports day pricing to play a course we never play in high season i.e. Burapha. We were allocated the A and B nines and elected to play off the white tees as the fairways were soft with no run. The greens were excellent but the bunkers were a different matter with wet sand and many balls plugged and difficult to play Today was Steve Dureys time to shine with an unbelievable score of forty-four points off a twentyone handicap, no doubt an adjustment is forthcoming. A three-way tie for second, third and fourth was decided on countback with Stuart Tinkler second, Geoff Parker third and Les Hall the unlucky one to miss out. After some very poor scores last week it was nice to see the standard raised considerably this week. Near pins went to Stuart Tinkler, Stuart Brown, Peter Allen, and Mark Stanley. Friday, May 11th Emerald 1st Geoff Parker (14) 42 points 2nd Les Hall (25) 40 points 3rd Mark Stanley (10) 40 points 4th Geoff Cox (37) Near pins Dave Ashman, Jimmy Carr, Bruno Facenda, and Steve Durey Third time lucky for the Buner Boys as another day where weather threatened to intervene, fortunately, the rain stayed away and the round was completed dry. fer as mowers have to stay off the course so fairways were in need of a cut and greens were super slow for the same reason. Despite this, the quality of scoring didn’t suffer with once again some super scores being returned This time Geoff Parker turned the tables on Mark Stanley so the lifestyle choice conundrum is still unresolved, Geoff returned a superb forty-two points to take first place. Les Hall on forty points took second edging out Mark Stanley on countback, whilst Geoff Cox took fourth with a very respectable thirty-seven points. Near Pins went to Dave Ashman, Jimmy Carr, Steve Durey and Bruno Facenda. Regular winner Stuart Tinkler

liant display of controlled golf, Stuart Tinkler took the honors today with a magnificent forty-four points twenty-two on each nine, which included three birdies. He also had two further birdie attempts lip out, so it was no surprise that he felt the cut of the handicapper’s scalpel back at the Bunker. Second place went to Les Hall with a very respectable thirtyseven. Les had his card marked by Trevor and was virtually indecipherable so a little censure was in order for both. Third place was filled by Jimmy Carr on thirty-five points. Near pins went to Les Cobban, Neil Carter, Trevor Priestly, and Michael Brett. As a matter of courtesy and to facilitate the compilation of results all cards should be marked in the prescribed manner. Wednesday, May 16th Pattana Country Club 1st Neil Carter (13) 33 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (17) 31 points 3rd Geoff Parker (14) (30) points Near pins Mark Stanley, Les Cobban, Nei Carter X 2 It seems all good things come to an end and so it was today for the Bunker Boys. First, the weather which had been very kind to us in recent weeks took revenge in spades. On the twelfth fairway, the rain which had been threatening for a while hit suddenly with torrential rain and very scary lightening forcing everybody to abandon play and run for cover. After about forty minutes play resumed under “pick, clean, and place” rules. The brilliant scores of recent weeks seemed a distant memory as scoring was mediocre at best. Neil Carter took first place with thirty-three points, second

went to Jimmy Carr on thirty-one points, and Geoff Parker rounded out the scoring in third place on thirty. Near pins went to Mark Stanley, Les Cobban, and two to Neil Carter. Today marked the welcome return of Tony Robbins to the golf course after a lengthy lay-off after shoulder surgery, he played remarkably well after such a long time out of the game. The weather forecast for monsoon season predicts double the normal rainfall so it seems we are going to have to get used to playing in the wet. Friday, May 18th Crystal Bay 1st Michael Brett (16) Net 69 2nd Mike Lloyd (19) Net 69 3rd Neil Carter (13) Net 72 Near Pins Neil Carter, Takeshi Hakozaki, Mike Lloyd, Michael Brett The second medal round of the month was played at the Crystal Bay course under grey skies with rain once again interupting play but only for a short time with a passing shower. Once again we were lucky as the weather seemed much worse no too far away with thunder and lightening just over the mountains.Today saw a welcome return to better scoring after Wednesdays debacle. Both Michael Brett and Mike Lloyd returned net scores of sixty-nine only separated by countback. Neil Carter took third place with a net seventy-two. Takeshi Hakozaki was cruising to victory but collapsed on the final hole with a nine to fall out of contention. Near pins went to Takeshi Hakozaki, a small consolation, Neil Carter, Mike Lloyd and Michael Brett. Michael Brett winner at Crystal Bay

Another day when the weather gods smiled on the Bunker Boys, well most of them anyway. Our last group suffered the consequences of slow play by being rained upon on the eighteenth tee all the way to the green, everybody else from our group was already inside enjoying a cold beer. The Pattavia course was in excellent condition, however, the heat was oppressive, the humidity stifling, and the fruit flies irritating in the extreme. It was impossible to settle over a shot without tiny black flies all over your face and hands. It seems last weeks extraordinary results were not a flash in the pan as today’s results show. were not bothered. You could go to the desk and get soft drinks brought. Nice and peacefull. I suppose they had food but it seemed a pity to disturb them. All in all this was a really enjoyable day out. I suspect we were something different, but we were treated well and all were full of compliments at the way we were looked after. I suspect we will return one day. After all at 900 Baht for Greenfee and Caddyfee, and allowed to share a cart you cannot go wrong. Back at BJ’s, two hours later, we were soon into the results. TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday The 15th May : Sunrise Lagoon ( Stableford) Where?, you will be asking, as was I, when Dick asked did I think a trip there would be worth it. It just so happened that one of out group had heard of it and talking nicely to him he ‘volunteered’ to take a trip there and have a look around. The reply was positive so we thought we would give it a go. And why not!!. So where is it, well go to Bangpakong Riverside and keep going for half an hour or so and there it is. Well not quite as easy as a couple of accidents slowed us down but give or take a few minutes and couple of hours and allowed many a couple of hours ‘shut eye’ in the bus till we got there. The entrance is different, reminds me of many of the Courses in Pattaya many years ago as they had been laid out but were trying

to mature and find their feet. The booking in was also different, you paid, got a score card and were told to change go outside and sort of get on with it. Outside was a Lady who asked what you had paid and then either put you in a buggy or had a caddy and a trolley. Never seen it before. Suspect they had no receipts for the players but it was different and sort of worked. It was apparent not many groups had visited. The day was roasting hot and as I suspect there were not many on the Course we were soon off. Only to find the Course very wet but the buggies went everywhere. Takes me back. The Course itself was very flat and an easy walk, so I am told, but it has much promise as practically every hole has water on it. There was even a tent, somewhere, that sold water and some things to eat. The place is built around rivers and ponds and

playing over water or indeed alongside it is a constant in this round. The greens were slow and most were flat with little deviation, just enough to miss the hole. But the wet grass and the longish grass on the fairway made the Course seem very long. All in all the Course needs to mature, but the constant of water on practically every hole makes it a tough Course to score on. Many greens are over water with the odd island green. However with an empty Course we scooted around. Then back to the changing room. Talking of the changing room, the keys were in the locks and you chose your own locker. Mind the keys did not lock the doors on most, but with a little basic engineering you could get a locker that worked. Happy days as the room was nice and clean. The room we sat in was nice and peaceful, just a room and you

On Tuesday 15th May we went to Greenwood. Driving on the 331 let us think about the period of 2 years ago with all the road works. It seems there is a new big road project which will give us some delay. The reward was a beautiful course. The weather was hot today, but we enjoyed the game. It is always good to see a well maintained course. Despite the good conditions, we didn’t have

good results. The winner was Neil Harvey with 32 stable ford points. Second was Jonathan Pratt with 31 stable ford points, beating Stan Rees on the count back. We had problems to find the way to the par 3"s. Only 1 today for Neil Harvey. Eastern Star was our venue on Thursday 17th May. We left Siam Resort in sunshine, but the sky became black when we arrived at Eastern Star. And before we were on the tee the rain was pouring down. After waiting 20 minutes the sky cleared up and we had a nice day on a perfect course. Jonathan Pratt showed his good

and the snow bunnies headed back home. For the die-hards though, bookings must be made and the outings organized. We missed an outing to Treasure Hill in April due to the reduced number of golf days so it was nice to see this tough but usually well presented course back in the rotation. The only apprehension in the minds of most centered on whether the rainy season thundershowers that seem to plague this particular area would give us a break this day. Fueled up with BJ’s breakfast and cups of caffeine, off we headed under fairly clear skies with only a hint in the forecast for showers. The drive up is now fairly easy and we were greeted at the course by essentially an empty parking lot. With a quick check in, all opting for the fine 1250 baht “All-In” deal, we were soon off the 1st, playing the Yellow Tees. No “Lift, Clean, &

Place” today as carts were allowed in fairways and there was no evidence of recent rains having drenched the course. This proved to be an acceptable decision and other than a light, on and off, shower over the last couple of holes, the weather had little influence and the course was in great condition. With all four groups finished in 4 hours, all were on the road back to Pattaya and an earlier than usual snack and presentation. Playing off “Course Handicap” and with one flight the results of the day were: 1st: Dick Warberg (22) - 36 pts 2nd: Brian Gabe (18) - 35pts 3rd: Graham Buckingham (23)34pts 4th: Mashi Kaneta (16) - 33pts Best 9’s(non-winners): Andre Van Dyk and Barry Elphick.

between Martin Hayes and Jonathan Pratt. Martin won with 30 stable ford points, beating Jonathan on the count back. Plutaluang was our venue on Thursday 10th May. It was again a clouded day with a little bit sun, dark clouds and showers. The course was after all the rain in the night before in good condition. Although the conditions were not perfect, we had to players with excellent results. Jonathan Pratt and Neil Harvey scored both 41 stable ford points. This time Jonathan won on the count back. Third was Willem Lasonder with 34 stable ford points.

Harvey and Pratt on fire at Plutaluang On Tuesday 8th May we went to The Emerald. We had just one group, because another group played in the PSC Monthly tournament. The course was in good condition and was very quiet. The weather was clouded with big dark clouds, but we were lucky and the rain didn’t come. We had no spectacular results today, but it was a close finish

form of the last weeks and won with 39 stable ford points. Dave Smith followed with a good 37 stable ford points and was second. Alex Everden became third with 32 stable ford points, beating Neil

are well grassed and should you get into the rough, you are not severely punished. The greens are always the talking point here. Today we found they had recently been cored and sanded, but pretty much settled now. The lightning speed we became scared of is now more sedate and absolutely playable. A field of 16 players arrived in two mini buses and a car on a, once again, hot steamy morning. Some relief came late in the round as the dark clouds began to assemble overhead and create a wisp of breeze. Luckily we stayed dry as the round was completed in just on four hours. We played from the White Tees and invoked “Lift, Clean and Place” as carts were not allowed on the course with the water that was about. This writer believes that if a course is to not allow carts on course golf societies should be notified so the players that have trouble walking can make the decision to play or not play. I would like somebody at PSC to address this and advise what can be done! Out of the Blocks were two golfers that at the half way mark both shared 18 points. As they were in the same 4 ball all looked set for a good old fashion shoot out! Alas the petrol tank of one golfer went into the red earlier than expected, the other soldiered on and went on to win the day. They of course were Rudy and Jockey, well done guys and in particular to Jock who has not hit a ball since he left us a couple of months ago. Goldsworthy Gets it Right Clear skies heralded the dawn of a new golfing week on Monday, 21st May as the Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Pattana to play a stableford round on the B and C nines. However when the first group teed off on the “peninsula” hole, B1, the clouds were building up and the stoic golfers in the group anticipated yet another rain punctuated round. From the seventh hole signs were not good as lightning flashed nearby but amazingly the storm only brushed the course with a flurry of fine drops. That was it! Thank you Buddha! The course was in fine condition, though a little soft, but the greens on C are obviously next in line for repair and they were patchy and slower than the excellent front nine ones. Scores were more than respectable as John Mason beat Colin Service on countback for fourth place with 34 points. One point and one place better was Mashi Kaneta with 35 points

PATTAYA DESTROYERS CAPTURE GULF OF SIAM CLASSIC first victory in the tourney and Michael Azipnikov lead the way with five goals with James Cox minding the twine for the Hitmen in the victory. Tuomas Kylama has two goals for Jellonas in a losing cause, who lost their starting goalie Jason Cotsmire to injury early in the tourney and had to borrow Pattaya’s back-up goalies to complete the tourney. The championship game was up next and started much the same way as the final round-robin game with Bangkok taking an early 1-0

The Pattaya Destroyers won the second annual Gulf of Siam Ice Hockey Classic, staged this past weekend at The Rink, on the 5th floor of the Harbor Mall on Pattaya Klang Road. The 4-on-4 competition proved to be a thrilling format for fans and players alike. Four teams competed in the tournament: the hometown Pattaya Destroyers; Jellonas, a team filled with predominately Finnish expats; a joint Phuket/Hong Kong squad; and the Bangkok Flying Farangs featuring organizers

Scott Whitcomb and Adrian Meyers from Jogsports. Pattaya stormed out of the gate winning their first two games on Friday by big scores of 10-2 over Jellonas and 15-2 over the Phuket-Hong Kong Hitmen. It looked they would cruise to the championship. But late on Saturday afternoon, they met a very determined Bangkok squad, who because of their round-robin overtime loss to Jellonas, had to beat Pattaya to advance to the final and that they did so with a 5-

2 triumph over the Destroyers. That set up a rematch for the championship game between the Flying Farangs and the Pattaya squad. The Destroyers, led by captain Michael Nakvachara, regrouped in their dressing room determined to make up for its mistakes in the final round robin game. Before that rematch, the consolation final was held with the Phuket-Hong Kong Hitmen defeating Jellonas 10-6 to take third place overall. It was the Hitmen’s

lead on a goal by Mike Wilson. But then the tide turned, and Pattaya scored four unanswered goals with John McHugh netting two markers and Sebastien Verdy and Aaron Vuorma adding singles. The final was 4-1 for Pattaya and the tourney MVP was young Finnish goalie Samuel Pekkala who was outstanding in the final game turning aside 20 of the 21 saves he faced, including four penalty shots. In this tournament, if players drew penalties, instead of their team going shorthanded for

two minutes, the opposing team was immediately awarded a penalty shot. The Bangkok squad featured Scott Whitcomb, Adrian Meyers, and Scott Murray from last year’s Jogsports Jerseys winning squad. They also had Siam Hockey League (SHL) captains Brad Wilson (the Sukhumvit Spitfires) and Mike Wilson (Expedia), so they were a force to be reckoned with. But all credit to the Pattaya Destroyers for coming back and winning their hometown tourney. The Destroyers had Oleg Kabokov in their lineup; he played in the KHL with former NHL star Jaromir Jagr. The tournament was organized by Asia Ice Events, with co-sponsors Jogsports and SWOT. The Pattaya team practices every Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 8:45-10:15pm at the Rink, Harbor Mall.

GOOD SONGS LIVE FOREVER

Being a child of the 60s, I grew up with a plethora of great pop and rock songs, most with excellent writing. Over the years with the advent of technology, the standard has decreased somewhat and experimentation has all but disappeared. There will always be exceptions and recently there have been a few examples of songs that will stand the test of time with them likely to be played for years to come. So, what makes a good song? A memorable tune (sometimes that you can give the whistle test to) and well written, identifiable lyrics are always a great starting point. The shaped sound of the production is also very important. However, the most important ingredient to my mind is the feeling a song evokes. How many times does a track pop up on the radio and suddenly memories come flooding back or an emo-

tion is triggered? Maybe a feeling of elation is experienced that makes you want to move your body and get in sync with the music, however good or poor your dancing may be. There is no better accolade, apart from the royalties of course, for any songwriter to witness their song still being popular years, maybe decades, after it was first conceived, and especially if it’s been recorded in different ways by different artists. Also, good songs live on, even if they’ve not been released and can still be popular when the right time arrives for the, sometimes, fickle public to embrace them. Your very own bi monthly columnist ‘pop cheesemeister’ has experienced all of this very recently. Firstly, my STEPS song 5,6,7,8 (certainly not my best musically or lyrically) has been successfully earning me money now for over twenty years and the recent anniversary arena tour by my loveable five piece all singing, all dancing ensemble creation has enhanced its’ earning potential and popularity further. Also, three previously unreleased songs that I recorded at my studio around fifteen years ago with late eighties multi hit pop singer SONIA, are now about to surface because of fan demand. In 1991, I had a top ten success

with SONIA called ‘Only Fools (Never Fall In Love)’ masterminded at top record label BMG by our dear friend Simon Cowell, who had previously awarded me a nice sum of money with a publishing deal and advised that I spend it all on creating my own studio. I had co-written the song

song with her plus two more that I’d co-written with a successful writer in L.A., one of which that had found its’ way into the double Oscar winning film ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. Unfortunately, Sonias’ Greatest Hits album never materialised and so these tracks have been laying

with my ex ‘Brotherhood Of Man’ manager Tony Hiller and after the success of the Motown style hit, we wrote a follow up in the same fashion called ‘If You Come Back To Me’. Unfortunately Simon decided with his infinite wisdom to get Sonia to record covers of older material which didn’t do her any favours (see, he doesn’t always get it right). Years later she called me to see if she could record the song we’d written especially for her as she was about to release a Greatest Hits album and needed some fresh material for it. I actually recorded that

around gathering dust. Recently, however, some of her ardent fans, of which I’ve been staggered by how many there are, especially in Brazil of all places, have con-

tacted me on discovering that these unreleased tracks exist and were desperate to hear them. So I put together a sampler of the three songs, uploaded to YouTube and hey presto, the feedback was big love so fan power is now forcing us to finally release the songs for worldwide digital distribution. Sonia’s army are very excited. This brings deep joy to me, not only because finally these songs will generate some income, but that the creativity that went into making the tracks will now bring happiness and sunshine to many around the world. That feeling is almost the best one….ha. Writing songs comes easy for me. However writing a good song that may last forever is a lot more difficult, plus you never know which songs are going to be the ones that will touch a nerve with the public. An amazing example of this is the song ‘Without You’ written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, two members of the brilliant early 70s band ‘Badfinger’. Their original version

was a mere final track on side one their album and was never a single release until the Harry Nilsson version came out which went on to be a massive hit. Unfortunately the two writers passed away and never saw how big their song really turned out to be. The song has now been recorded by over 180 artists including the likes of Mariah Carey. Paul McCartney once described the ballad as ‘the killer song of all time’. So, the answer is to write a lot, sometimes formularically, sometimes from the heart, sometimes from complete craziness. It’s very nearly impossible to know which of your creations is going strike a chord (see what I did there?) with the world at large although sometimes you can get an inkling, especially if your latest composition is keeping you awake at night because you can’t get the damn tune out of your head. The satisfying thing as a songwriter is the knowledge that your good songs will live forever.

A CHEFS’ JOURNEY The Chaine des Rotisseurs event for May at the Dusit Thani, Pattaya went down as one of the best Chaine events on the Eastern Seaboard, ever! The food, wine, service and comradery was everything the Chaine stands for. Talented young Chef Pathma had devised a culinary treat for the guests by taking them on a culnary journey around the world, mixing up flavours and styles.

For instance, the starter was Maldivian and Bruneian with further courses offering Samoan and Fijian (also called Oka or Kokoda) tuna in coconut. Then there was Mongolian broth lamb with dumplings and a main course of a mix of East and West being Asian spiced broth complimenting Australian beef fillet with Spanish onion prefaced by a plum sorbet with a touch of Chinese wine.

Finally a duo of Omani and Australian Chocolate um Ali with traditional Pavlova and assorted berries rounded off an amazing dinner. In true Pattaya style the guests mingled jovially and had great fun with each other, the boisterous ladies especially enjoying the fine Italian wines which complimented each course. It was really good to see some new young faces at the event and the Chaine does encourage all ages to participate. The next event is on Friday the 8th of June at Silverlake which promises to be an Italian themed dinner with luxury food and wine, all put together by well known top Italian chef Alberto.
