PATTAYANI’S GREEK FOOD ADVENTURE

Finding the new place was remarkably easy. There was great signage at top of soi 2 in Pratamnak. Fortunately, coming down the hill there is another big blue (traditional Greek color) Pattayanis sign on the left. Yanis shows up with a very nice OUZO as an appetizer And so it begins. We start with a traditional Greek salad. Greek salad is a cut above an Italian mixed salad due to the feta cheese and olives. I am happy because the feta is excellent.

Next, bring out BBQ cheese. It is called haloumi and it is delicious! That disappears pretty quickly. Next we try another cooked cheese I think it is called saganaki. Next we tried a Tiku (sp?) #6 on menu.. Kind of like a skinny Panini, vegan, very delicious it has water removed cucumber as a base. Delicious. Now comes Santorini, it is a baked tomato and cheese dish with bread. Kind of like a hot Italian bruschetta but 100 times better! Try this you will never order bruschetta again.

6 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

Of course there is a traditional Tzatzaki as yet another appetizer. So nowwhat do we want for dinner? A couple that has joined us order Mosaka and a calamari salad..reminds me greek calamari is the best! Another orders a baked lamb. I know it is slow roasted and will be so tender it can be eaten with a spoon. Of course Nils is happy with his second vegan sandwich. Now the problem what do I want? Yanis says he will pick for me. Yanis come back from the kitchen and NOT to my surprise he is carrying a Bouzouki. (Greek guitar) When you go to a Greek restaurant you should be prepared for inevitable bouzouki music and singing! So a little Greek music and singing and the Lamb arrives. Pooki invites me to taste, very very tender. It falls off the bone. Not bad considering I don’t eat lamb. So I take TWO bites.. Last but not least Yanis shows up with a custom made plate for me. I am truly stunned. It has a small

portion of calamari (greeks know how to do this exceptionally) with one spiced beef meat ball and one spiced pork meat ball (Kefte). In addition just one skewer of his greek threesome, which is a taste of chicken beef and pork on a skewer. Pooki takes

her turn on the calamari and says wow, delicious!. It was VERY tender. I tell Yanis I am very happy and think he should make this a Pete’s special on the menu. Dinner is winding down. BUT, I know in my heart something with honey in it is coming. Sure enough we get a delightful Baklava for desert and a little wine and everyone has a taste. I trust I have conveyed it was a delightful evening.

CREDIT CARD GANG CAUGHT PSC DARTS TEAM A serious crime has been uncovered by the local police. Millions of baht in cash and products has been scammed using Chinese credit cards by a gang of at least five people from China and Myanmar. At a joint press conference of Pattaya Police, Chonburi Immigration, Pattaya Tourist Police and Crime Suppression Division, the five people was presented to the press, together with evidence of this case 40,000 baht in cash, and 121 Debit Union Pay Cards of Bank of China, 19 SIM cards and mobile phones. police explained that they had received information that a foreign woman had been using a Chinese credit card to buy goods from Central Festival Pattaya Beach Shopping Mall, and that the staff at the shop found it suspicious that she came to the shop to purchase goods many times using different credit cards and signing the credit card slips using different names. Looking at CCTV footage the police discovered what some of the gang members

TERMINAL21 HAS LANDED

A huge new shopping mall is under construction in Pattaya and it is to be called Terminal21 Pattaya. If you lift an eyebrow to the name and remark that it sounds familiar then you would be right, as there is a Terminal21 shopping complex in Bangkok that is still relatively new. It was completed not that long ago in October 2011. Bangkok’s Terminal21 is a masterpiece of design. It is located very close to Asok Junction and is connected to the BTS Sky train by a walkway which links the station to two entrance doors on the second floor. It takes up the corner plot from Soi 19 to Asok Road and fronts the main Sukhumvit Road. Next to Terminal21 in Bangkokis the Westin Grand hotel and the well-established Robinsons Mall.

It covers 9 stories and has, as it centerpiece, a huge escalator than takes you from the main floor to the 3rd floor in one go. On the 4th and 5th floors are many eateries and they are not limited only

to these areas. Coffee shops and variousother foodie outlets are still dotted around other floors where fashion shops are more prevalent. Each floor in the shopping centre is themed based on different world cities and has models and artifacts from around the world. You can browse shops in San Francisco and cross the San Francisco bridge and the next minute you can be in Istanbul or London making a call in a traditional red British phone box. In Pattaya a similar international theme to the shopping mall is likely to be adopted. The building will be 6 stories high, but it will have some distinct features of its own and won’t be an exact replica of the Bangkok Terminal21. Expect to see the trademark in-

ternational theme. Some early artist impressions even show a full size jet aircraft sitting on the grounds outside, so who knows, maybe that will be part of the plan and will be an extra draw.

8 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

The location is on Pattaya North Road with the intersection of Pattaya Second Road. A large plot of land has been boarded up for some time and piling work has already been completed by the

main contractor. The developer of the project is Land and Houses and the cost of the mall is expected to be around 7.5 billion baht. Next to the new shopping mall will

also be the 18 storey Grande Centre Point Pattaya with 396 luxury guest rooms. (The Bangkok Terminal21 property also features a 20-storey hotel and residence called the Grande Centre Point Terminal21). Of course new super sized shopping malls don’t come to Pattaya that often. Even though the city has seen its fair share of development including Central Festival Pattaya and Hilton Hotel, in the northern part of the city, save from additional hotels and restaurants, there has not been so much in terms of new retail development.

Central Marina in North Pattaya – originally the Big C Central Center before undergoing a major revamp – is a great place but with plenty of new hotels having been built around Soi 2 and Soi 4 there is probably now the need for a retail development of this size in the area. The new Terminal21 Pattaya is already reaching for the sky and completion is expected to be in October 2018. It is expected to provide a real boost to Pattaya’s local economy and to provide a boost to the value of residential projects located in the immediate vicinity.

ORBITUARY Brother Denis Gervais 9th June 1945 – 8th June 2018 Brother Denis Gervais C.Ss.R., Vice President and Treasurer of the Father Ray Foundation, has died at the age of 72 following a long battle with cancer. Denis Gervais was born in 1945, the youngest of four children in the town of Louiseville in Quebec, Canada. He spent his early years living with his family but upon reaching school age he entered a boarding school run by an order of catholic nuns, of which an aunt was Mother Superiour. The

young boys from poor and dysfunctional families. He also coached baseball and ice-hockey, two sports that he followed all his life. Denis first came to Thailand in 1983 to teach a course at IBM’s office in Bangkok and it was on this visit that he traveled to Pattaya to play golf, on one of only four courses available at that time. He continued to visit each year and it was during his visit in 1991 that he had a chance meeting with the late Father Ray Brennan that would change his life forever. It was a year later in early 1992

that Denis arrived back in Pattaya for a ten week holiday. He planned to play golf and relax, but Father Ray asked if he could help with a small problem with his computer. During that ten week holiday he spent every day with Father Ray, not only sorting out that one problem Father Ray initially had, but also designing and creating new systems for accounting and sponsorships that would make life easier for the user and which are still in use today: Denis decided to take early retirement in 1992 and moved to Pattaya permanently,

working full time for Father Ray. In 2002 he took his religious vows and was ordained a Redemptorist Brother at St. Nikolaus Church in Pattaya, with his close friend Father Ray Brennan looking on. He became Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation, as well as the Treasurer in charge of the Accounts Department. Denis leaves behind one brother and several nieces and nephews in Canada, as well as several hundred children here in Pattaya who will miss him dearly.

PURCHASE OR LOAN

Some time ago I came upon a case regarding a loan agreement between two Thai individuals and a foreign man, the deal in question was a scam where the two Thai people, in this case a man and a woman were trying to cheat the foreigner by lying about the agreement. The details were that the two Thais would borrow one million baht and put a land and house up as collateral, but unbeknownst to the foreign man the contract stated that it was a sale and purchase agreement not a

loan as originally agreed. The way they did this was to provide the contract with no English translation and to deceive the foreigner and his interpreter who was present at the time. Knowing that his interpreter was not skilled in English and that the foreigner did not know more than a few words in Thai they convinced his interpreter that the foreign man had agreed to purchase the land and house in question. The interpreter wanting to speed up proceedings pointed to the blank

space for the man to sign and that was that, nothing out of the ordinary had happened and a deal was made, it was only later that the foreign man came to realize the consequences of putting pen to paper that day. On a normal sales and purchase agreement you would have a deposit amount, a percentage based on the overall price and then you would pay the rest after the property transfer is complete. The contract that the man signed had it as a one off payment up front with no deposit and with a thirty thousand baht interest to be paid to him monthly which in a real sale and purchase agreement there is no such thing. They had tried to swindle the foreign man of his money but he would not notice until the Thai man involved in the deal was murdered and the woman did not make the interest payments stated in the contract. Thus the case was submitted to court only then did the foreign man know the depth of his problem, when finally briefed on the details by his attorney. In court the case is taking a long time and a sentence is still pending, the

HOUSEWARMING

woman is fighting the case by using the contract that the foreign man had signed against him. Stating that it is a sales and purchase agreement and that the he had paid was correct and that she did nothing wrong, also as she only signed the agreement as a witness she is trying to get out of any wrongdoing even though she received and spent the money. The piece of property in question was never transferred to the foreign man and it was later found out that neither one of the two

Thais who made the agreement even legally owned it. Our Comment: The root of this problem stems from the start in which the foreign man brought an interpreter who was not fluent in English with him to the meeting and who only told him where to sign and not what the document was all about. So when you sign anything please make sure that you have a lawyer that is both proficient in Thai and English present so you are sure to protect yourself and know exactly

what it is that you are signing, or even better get a translation made for yourself to look over. Nowadays a loan agreement and some other contracts can even be made in English with zero hassles. If you have your own case or any questions regarding law in Thailand please feel free to write in to us and we will answer any questions or concerns in this column. To contact the Lawyer please call: 08-9911-1199 or email: info@pattayapeople.com

YOU’RE ADHD RELATIONSHIP SURVIVAL GUIDEADHD can harm your relationship, the condition can strain even strongest bonds. See how you and your partner can nip potential conflict before they flare up-Dr.Kamaljit Singh.

Hyper focus: This is the flip side of distraction. You may be so engrossed in something it’s hard to shift your attention away. You can’t drag yourself away from that new best seller or look up from your

You, Me, and ADHD: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can send our most important relationship off the rails. Distraction, procrastination, and other ADHD symptoms can stir anger, frustration, and hurt feelings for both the person with ADHD and the partner. But your marriage or relationship can thrive with proper treatment and tactics to ward off misunderstandings. Distraction: This is the main symptom of ADHD. Your ADHD partner doesn’t seem to listen when you talk or fails to follow through on promises. You feel unheard, ignored, and unwanted. In reality, they may love you very much but are too distracted by the TV, the phone, or their own thoughts to show it. Distraction Strategies: First, calmly tell your ADHD partner how you feel. Bottled-up feelings can lead to resentment and anger. If conversations are a big problem, set a time to talk to your partner face-to-face, away from distractions. It may help to touch your partner while you talk. If you’re the one with ADHD and start to zone out, fess up. Ask your partner to repeat what they said. If the conversation goes on too long and your mind wanders, it’s harder to reconnect.

smartphone. Hyper focus can be a gift for productivity. But unchecked, it can make your loved one feel less important than whatever has grabbed your attention. Hyper focus Strategies: If you’re prone to hyper focus during certain activities, like online games or crossword puzzles, avoid them close to mealtimes or whenever you need to engage with your partner. Set alarms and track the time you spend on doing one thing. Get up or move to break your preoccupation when you realize you’re hyper focusing. If you’re the partner or the spouse, try not to take it personally. Forgetfulness: You blanked out on your dinner date and left your husband stranded at the restaurant. Maybe your power got shut off because you forgot to pay your electric bill. Your partner feels they can’t trust you with even basic tasks. You feel like a failure. Anger builds on both sides. Forgetfulness Strategies: Forgetfulness and other ADHD symptoms aren’t character flaws. Avoid lectures and don’t label the behavior as rude or uncaring. Don’t take over for your partner, either. That can leave you both resentful. Instead, work with your partner to help them remember. Use a day planner or reminders on a

ISSUE 604  AUGUST 2018

smartphone or a laptop. Disorganization: The partner with ADHD may skip chores or leave jobs unfinished. Or constantly misplace the car keys or lose important papers. Disorganization can cause stress and wasted time and money. It also can lead to nagging and leave the other person feeling controlled. Disorganization Strategies: Calm down and talk about the issues. Then look for fixes. Maybe the partner with ADHD can take charge of cooking and laundry instead of paying bills or organizing carpools. Play to each of your strengths to avoid the chore wars. Respect the ADHD partner’s need to keep items in certain spots — it may be their way of staying organized. Impulsivity: People who have the hyperactive type of ADHD also tend to be impulsive. They often act before thinking. One common problem is impulsive spending. You may blow money on things you don’t need or max out the credit cards. Some people may have risky sex or drive dangerously. Or they may blurt out inappropriate comments at parties. Impulsivity Strategies: Selfcontrol can be learned. You can help your partner role-play how to act in social situations. Or how to wait their turn. If you’re apt to overspend, bring cash and stick to your shopping list. Cut out temptations. Toss catalogues and unsubscribe from retailers’ emails. If impulsive behaviors are out of hand, you may need help from a therapist with expertise in ADHD. Procrastination: We all put off boring or hard tasks from time to time. But for some people with ADHD, procrastination is a giant hurdle. You might not know how to get started, or feel overwhelmed by a project. You may need last-minute deadlines as motivation. That’s a recipe for a chaotic lifestyle that’s hard on you and your partner. Procrastination Strategies: It’s easier to tackle a project when you break it into small chunks. Focus on only the first part — don’t think about the rest of it until you finish step one. If you’re the partner, see if you can share a part of the task to offer company. But take

care not to take over their responsibility. Most importantly, don’t think of procrastination as a personal defect, but as a trait that can be managed. Mood Swings: People with ADHD often have trouble controlling emotions. You might lash out in anger or have sudden or wide mood swings. That’s because you feel anxiety and frustration — as well as joy and happiness — more intensely than some others. That can leave your partner on edge. Mood Swing Strategies: A healthy diet, good sleep, and regu-

PATTAYA WHEELCHAIR MARATHON 2018 In past years the annual Pattaya Marathon included a full wheelchair race, 42kms in length, and each year it drew an impressive array of athletes from around the world. Recently the full wheelchair marathon has been replaced with a 3.7km fun race, and this year thirty nine athletes took part. The length of the race may not seem far, but for most of those who took part it was their first time they were racing. They raced down Beach Road, and then up towards Dolphin Roundabout; which may not seem steep but try wheeling yourself up there and it’s not as easy as you may think.

Then along Second Road, turning left on Pattaya Klang and over the finish line back on Beach Road in front of the Hard Rock Hotel. Waiting at the finish line to welcome them back was Mayor of Pattaya, Pol. Maj. Gen. Anan Charoenchasri, who congratulated them on completing the race. The majority are students at the Pattaya Redemptorist Technological College for People with Disabilities, with the exception of the winner of the race, Sungkeek Sripraram from Bangkok, who took away the first prize of 8,000 Baht. PATTAYA UTD – CLIMB OUT OF THE RELEGATION ZONE general ball play have been made. However, the team could still need a creative midfielder who can link up regularly with maestro Brazilian Lukian, always the most likely to score. There’s only one game in August because of the mid year break, Chonburi away on Saturday August 4th. After that the next home match is on Wednesday September 5 th at home to Nakhon Rachasima FC. Dolphins are going to need all the support they can get for the rest of the season to ensure they are not one of the five teams that will get relegated this season.

Dolphin Stadium is situated behind the temple at the far end of Soi Neurnplubwan from Sirkumvit. Entrance price is 150 baht 0r 200 baht for a VIP seat in the main stand. Come on…support your local team.

After winning an amazing three away Thai Premier League ties in July against Air Force Central 32, Bangkok Utd. 2-1 and Suphanburi FC. 2-1, Pattaya Utd. added to those wins with a well fought 1-1 draw at home to Bangkok Glass. This all means that the team have climbed out of the drop zone and are currently mid table. Generally the team are looking stronger and it seems someone may have been passing on our last two months comments regarding some of the tactics employed by the current coach as improvements to the

166TH PSC MEMBER’S TOURNAMENT RESULTS FRIDAY 20TH JULY AT PATTAYA COUNTRY CLUB Recently elected Golf Chairman Sandy Mackay selected PCC for his second monthly tournament. Some 48 members took part – some had not played the course for a while. The general feeling

was the course was satisfactory despite the sanding of the first 4 holes for general maintenance and that the greens were very true. The weather was dry and windy. The competition was divided into 2 Flights – ‘A’ playing stroke and ‘B’ playing Stableford both from the white tees other than Ladies and Seniors. Shortly after the last group came

BUNKER BOYS Monday, July 2nd Kings Naga 1st Peter Allen (32) 37 points 2nd Stuart Mann (23) 36 points 3rd Les Cobban (9) 35 points Near pins Frank Quinlan, Takeshi Hakozaki, Geoff Parker, Les Hall. A new month of golf kicked off at the Kings Naga course where a field of eleven participated. The weather was fine and the course in good condition with the exception of the greens which had recently been cored and sanded and provided a real challenge with variable speeds and very bumpy surface. The sand had not been brushed in properly and some areas were covered totally by sand while others received none. The speed of play was just about right with no delays and the round completed in under four hours. Peter Allen took top spot with a round of thirty-seven points, Peter is starting to regularly return some excellent scored so a cut in handicap may be imminent. Second place went to Stuart Mann one shot adrift while the ever-re-

in and the results had been calculated it was time for the presentation in the restaurant. Nigel Cannon called order and introduced Sandy who expressed his appreciation for the members who took part today also the helpers, Steve, Gerd, Tim, Nigel and

Ing and the PSC office staff for their preparation work. Results Low Gross – Both Steve Truelove (8) and Bob Newell (8) came in with a net 79 with Steve getting the nod over Bob with a better back 6! ‘A’ Flight – Duangdon Galer (15) 68 net winning on countback. Martin Cooke (15) 68 net – Wayne Cotterall (16) 69 net.

liable Les Cobban took third on thirty-five points. Near pins went to Takeshi Hakozaki, Frank Quinlan, Geoff Parker, Les Hall Wednesday, July 4th Khao Kheow. 1st Neil Carter (12) 38 points 2nd Kob Glover (31) 36 points 3rd Alan Sullivan (14) 35 points Near pins Jimmy Carr, Geoff Parker, Chris Della-Mare X 2 On America’s national day it seemed odd that we didn’t have a single American amongst our ranks today. A field of twelve made their way to Khao Khoew Country club for our midweek round. Conditions for golf were almost perfect with moderate temperatures, bright skies, and a pleasant cool breeze blowing. Play was not as fast as it might have been as a few slow groups were out before us, so a little waite here and there, nevertheless the round was completed within four hours which was acceptable. We were allocated the B and C nines where the course was in excellent order except for the tee boxes which were a bit ragged

ISSUE 604  AUGUST 2018

There were also a number of ‘lucky draw prizes’ Sandy closed the day with a reminder that the next tournament will be at Laem Chabang on Mon-

day 10th September and he advised members to sign up early as it will be popular with a restricted number of players.

dition, the weather pleasant but once again the wind which was strong at times played a part in the results. Geoff Cox rose to the challenge returning a card of thirty-eight points obviously unaffected by the soccer result. Jimmy Carr also had a fine round but had to settle for second on countback whilst Tony Robbins announced his return from yet another overseas jaunt by taking third one stroke adrift. Near pins went to Peter Allen and three to Chris Della-Mare who seems to be a bit of a dab hand with near pins. Friday, July 13th Eastern Star 1st Jimmy Carr (17) 34 points 2nd Geoff Cox ((19) 30 points 3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 30 points Near pins Geoff Parker, Geoff Cox, Chris Della-Mare X 2 The week’s golf concluded with a round at the Eastern Star course. As seems to be the case more often than not this is a very difficult course on which to put together a decent score and so it was again today with results moderate at best. Danger lurks everywhere on the course with many fairways having o.b, on one side and water on the other. This coupled with a breeze meant that if you were not straight then you were in trouble. Jimmy Carr was top of the podium today with a modest thirty-four points. Second, went to Geoff Cox on thirty points edging out Takeshi Hakozaki on countback. Once again Chris Della-Mare figured in the near pins taking two while Geoff Parker and Geoff Cox took the remaining two.

‘B’ Flight – Ian Corica (31) 40 points winning on countback. Willem Lasonder (25) 40 points Don Lehmer (27) 39 points. Near Pins Keith Allen (2), Phil

Waite, Wayne Cotterall, Yurie Murakam, Stephen Ford, Micheal Anderson, John Aylott. Long Drive Paul Bray Long Put – Ian Corica

and could do with some attention. Neil Carter took first place today with a score of thirty-eight points an excellent score by any measure on this challenging layout. Our only lady member Kob Glover took second place with a fine thirty-six, Kob is relatively new to golf and already showing signs she will be a force in the future with a free-flowing swing and an ideal temperament for golf. Alan Sullivan who had an excellent back nine took third with thirtyfive points beating Robbie Watts on countback. Newcomer Chris Della-Mare made a fine contribution to the delinquent fund by taking two near pins and not showing up for the presentation, Jimmy Carr and Geoff Parker took the other two and despite a lot of encouragement did not contribute to this worthy cause. Friday, July 6th Pattavia 1st Neil Carter (12) 38 points 2nd Les Hall (23) 37 points 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 36 points Near pins Stuart Mann, Takeshi Hakozaki, Les Cobban X 2. Despite a few notable absentees, today’s role up of fourteen was an excellent low season turn out for a round at the popular Pattavia course. As always the course was in fine condition, the greens are now back to the speed for which this course became renowned. Coupled with not so subtle undulations putting was going to be a challenge and a few golfers suffered McIlroy syndrome on the greens. When someone is on their game it doesn’t seem to matter what the conditions are as was the case today with our winning group. Neil Carter took top

position with an excellent round of thirty-eight points for the second time in two days. Second, went to Les Hall who is now starting to appear in the winner’s circle with monotonous regularity on a score of thirty-seven points whilst Jimmy Carr rounded out the winner’s circle in third on thirtysix points. Near pins went to Stuart Mann, Les Hall, and two to Les Cobban. Double winner Neil Carter

blew all day which helped keep temperatures down. With everything in favor of low scores, the boys didn’t disappoint with the low handicappers dominating. Robbie Watts was again to the fore with an excellent round of net sixty-seven and could have been a few strokes better except for some wayward putts. Hot on his tail was Les Cobban a stroke back whilst Neil Carter brought up the rear with sixty-nine points net.

Monday, July 9th Bangpakong Riverside 1st Robbie Watts (10) Net 67 2nd Les Cobban (9) Net 68 3rd Neil Carter (11) Net 69 Near pins Gary Bright, Jimmy Carr, Les Cobban A reasonable field of 11 participated in the first medal round of the month at the Bangpakong Riverside Course. This is a course that elicits very polar opinions, some claims it is like playing in a large field, while others really like the course. What is not in any doubt is the condition of the course which is always presented in excellent condition. Coupled with very pleasant weather conditions could not be better for golf except that a fairly stiff breeze

Near pins went to Gary Bright, Jimmy Carr, and Les Cobban. Wednesday, July 11th Pattana Sports and Country Club 1st Geoff Cox (19) 38 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (17) 38 points 3rd Tony Robbins (22) 37 points Near pins Peter Allen, Chris DellaMare X 3 Due to the late finish of the World Cup semi-final coupled with a bit of disappointment for English fans numbers were lower than expected for today’s round at Pattana Sports and Country Club. This is a quality and challenging course and one we rarely play only in the low season due to uncompetitive pricing in high season. The course was in fine con-

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday July 13, Pattana B/C – St, Gerd and Don “Lucky” on Friday the 13th at Pattana It’s the Friday before the British Open Championship (is everyone happy?) and the Tropical Golfers were getting in their last practice rounds while waiting for their last minute invitation. While Pattana is not quite so tough as Carnoustie, to the group today it’s the most important course in the world, and it was Friday the 13th after all. Twenty hopefuls signed up and headed out to the non-links style course. There were conflicting reports as to which 9’s we were to play, and finally the B and C courses were on the agenda. The course was in the usual very good to excellent

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Holiday week On Tuesday 3rd July we went to King’s Naga with only 1 group. Many players of our society have holiday in Europe or elsewhere. Were we a few months ago enthusiastic about the improvements of the course, this changed today completely. The course was in poor condition and the greens even very bad. Let’s hope they can improve again. Paul Davies was back from holiday and he showed us that he had a good relaxing time and played a steady round. He won with 34 stable ford points. Paddy

condition. Searching for a criticism, some complained a few bunkers were not well filled, but that’s why it’s called a Hazard. Others complained the water was too wet. Playing from the Yellow tees, which this day would have been 50% the same as playing White, the course length is manageable. Scores showed this to be the case and there would be no “low winner” surprises today. A-Flight (0-17): Gerd Riedler (c/ h 10) was firing on all cylinders, err clubs, and shot the best score with a very impressive 40 points off his enviable handicap. Great Gerd! Andre Van Dyk (17) was a couple steps behind with 38 points, followed by newcomer Mark Erickson (14) with 36. Well done.

Devereux was second with 29 stable ford points. Plutaluang was our venue on Thursday 5th July. The course was as always in very good condition. We had nice weather partly clouded and sometimes sun with a nice breeze. We decided to play a match play today. Jonathan Pratt beat Willem Lasonder on the last hole. Dave Smith beat Paddy Devereux with 2 up. Next time the winners will meet each other. Siam Country Resort Accommodation - Restaurant - Bar Siam Country Road, Soi Polo 1, 39 Moo 9 Pong, Banglamung. B-Flight (18+): Don Carmody (30) edged out his flight with a most excellent 39 points, followed by Daryl Evans (25) over Mick Coghlan (24) on count-back at the 38 point level. Good scores all around! Best 9 (non winning) scores went to Alex Rousselis with 20 points and Mashi Kaneta 17.

very difficult to predict here, and we have been many a time when it was raining and I cannot remember not playing. The only times we have been rained off is when we go there in good weather and the heavens open. Really weird and I am not saying I prefer it when it rains as I know we will play. So off we went and as I filled up the car at the top of Pattaya Nua, I noticed that the rain landing on the car was very dirty indeed. I have never seen a car turn black so quick and wondered what it was doing to my lungs. However back in the car and talking to my friends I told them I was quite happy to have a white car and hoped the drive would wash the dirty rain off. This day was also the culmination of The Bangpra Eclectic Ladder, this is the best score on each hole over the last three rounds there and the finish was still in doubt.

There were several players very close and the winner could be one of several. The Course itself was as expected still wet, but essentially as buggies were allowed on the fairways the Course was firm underneath. The mowers were still in use as we teed off, but what a fine day and to top it all off the rain kept the monkeys at home. Just like most sane people when it is rainy you stop in and stoke the fire up and keep dry, and the only monkey we saw as we were sat in the Restaurant and one prowled in front of the window trying to get in. As said the grass was wet and a bit long with the greens slower than normal, but normal here is still nippy fast and the greens putted well and were true. Get into the rough however and it was still hard work trying to get the ball on its way. The rain was ‘spitty’ most

Tuesday The 17th July 2018: Bangpra ( Stableford) It was raining as I drove around to BJ’s, quite hard infract, and of course on arriving I was bombarded with the normal question, ‘ It’s raining are we going to play? ‘. Hard courses This week we saw coming back a few regular players, Phillip Waite and Stephen Ford and we had guest player Ewing. On Tuesday 10th July we went to Eastern Star. The course was in very good condition and the greens were also very good. We had nice weather a little bit cloudy and a good breeze. It was an exciting round between Jonathan Pratt and Willem Lasonder. Jonathan had the best nerves on the last hole and won with 37 stable ford points. Willem was second with 36 stable ford points, beating Paul Davies on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Neil Harvey and Willem Lasonder. Mountain Shadow was our venue on Thursday 12th July. The course

was as always in very good condition. But the course is not easy with all the trees. We had nice

of the time but as one golfer said it was just right to keep the temperature at an optimal. With no one ahead we fairly rattled around and after a most enjoyable round we were soon into the showers. The changing room here is a fine one and the Restaurant where we went next is very good with a fine view and also our one monkey of the day parading up and down. The drive back was good, although I missed the entry to the motorway again and ended up coming in past the International School on the 36 and back along Sukhumwit. This is twice I have missed the Route 7 on the way back, but I will get it on the way back next time after sage advice from Dick and Mashi. You would not think I have been driving this road for over 20 years, but getting back on is not easy, for me, seemingly. Soon into the results we had a fine winner when Steve Truelove came in with 40 points, and I thought the Course tough. We then had a countback on 37 points that saw Walter Baechli in second and Bob Stokes in third. Another countback, this time on 36 points, saw Mashi in fourth and Don Carmody in fifth. Then the Eclectic and that ‘Old’ warrior Dick Warberg won with a net 60.67 ahead of Don Carmody and Derek Brook in joint second with net 62’s. this was a fine day out and most of the golfers left early to ensure they got a good nights sleep !!!. T.T.F.N. Pic Steve Truelove outside entrance to Bangpra. weather partly clouded and sometimes sun with a nice breeze. Winner today was Stephen Ford with 34 stable ford points. Second was Daniel Oshiro with 33 stable ford points. Third was Dave Smith with 32 stable ford points, b e a t i n g Jonathan Pratt on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Dave Smith, Jonathan Pratt and Phill Waite.

GROWLING SWAN STABLEFORD, PLEASANT VALLEY GOLF CLUB – MONDAY 9th JULY, 2018. RUDY BRINGS HOME the BACON! Not a large field that chose to venture out but one could say it was an enthusiastic group of golfers. Today’s trip was to Pleasant Valley, one bus and 3 cars did the job of getting all punters to the course! Despite the fact that we were delayed, with one golfer forgetting his voucher for the day, we arrived with plenty of time to have a coffee or beer as the case may be and the first group teed off from the Blue tees on time. The course was in fine nick, fairways were clean and freshly mowed, the rough had been trimmed and it appeared that the greens were playing true. Conditions were perfect with no sign of rain the sun was shining and a

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY GREEN VALLEY…Mon..Jul.9….. S/ford Imagine Scores If the Greens Were Fine The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Green Valley on a beautifully fine day on Monday, 9th July. The course was in excellent condition but was let down badly by some wooly, rough-cut greens which were patchy and inconsistent. Fairways were fully covered and bunkers were well prepared. Thirty two golfers filled the booking sheet and managed to get away on time. It soon became obvious that high scores would be the order of the day as, at the turn, a quarter of the field had collected scores of par or better. The field was divided into two flights, cut at eighteen and under and ultimately a third of the golfers broke par or better. In the top flight Wayne Peppernell’s crafty 39 points took

gentle breeze offered us some relief. Golf in Pattaya at present is suffering and the numbers that we see or don’t see tells us this. Our numbers may be down but at the very least we are putting golfers out to play. With our numbers today we were to play one Division with three placings, all novelties are in play. Well it was That Wild South African Rudy Regenass that took the days honors, Rudy returned to scales with an excellent 40 points. Finishing second was Takeshi Hakozaki only one point behind our leader. Third past the post is that man that has found the fountain of youth Gordon Clegg. PLEASANT VALLEY WINNERS. third place, with Paul Bray recording 40 points for second, on his return to the group. The flight winner was Phil Davies who is currently in top form at the moment, this time adding another forty-one point score to his already impressive CV with the group since his return from Wales a month or so ago. In the second flight Ian Corica recorded 39 points for third place, with Steve Baker’s flattering 41 points in second place. Leading the field off and back in the clubhouse was Mick Coghlan whose 42 points was enough to blow the field away in style. Consolation prizes went to Toby Glass for his best front nine of 20 points and Lachlan Gotz for his similar score on the back nine. Near pins were won by Phil Davies (5), Paul Bray (8) and Dave Arataki (13) with the sixteenth retaining its modesty throughout.

It was “MASHI” and the “JOCK” that regin supreme. It was twenty golfers that lined up today to have a crack at Eastern Star Golf Course. Mixed reports have filtered back to us over the last month or so, as to how the course is, no better way to find out than to get there and try it out. So here we are! Well they are doing a “Reno Job” on the club house, a little inconvenient but at the end of the day we are there to play golf and the rest is insurmountable. Back to the golf, our 4 groups teed off earlier than

Fairways were great, bunkers were raked (I noticed that in our 4 the caddies were right on to raking the bunkers) something that does not happen at every course. The Greens were true but deadly, a lot of discussion after the game was the amount of 3 and 4 putts that were used. Two Flights today the numbers are up so, A-Flight was 0 to 25 B-Flight was 26+. A-Flight saw the ever reliable and consistent Mashi Kaneta take first place on the podium with 35 points. Second past the post was

the scheduled 10 am. Did not see any other golfers on the course till very late in our game. We attacked from the yellow tees and invoked Lift, Clean & Place. The reason for that was rain was threatening, fortunate for us was that it did not arrive. The course was in tip top shape there was nothing that you could ask for everything was cherry ripe.

It had been a fine day at Green Valley but imagine what scores may have been if the greens matched the quality of the rest of the course. One day we’ll be there and everything will be grand, we’re sure!

BANGPAKONG.....Wed. July 11….S/ford Super Steve Slays ‘Em Bangpakong Riverside has lived up to it’s reputation of a high (stableford) scoring course, with nineteen of the twenty one starters having 30 points or more on a golf course presented in very good condition. But the most exhilarating display came from Big Steve Truelove with a fantastic 46 points to leave daylight between him and the next two places. Playing off handicap 9 makes it even more impressive, with a gross of 71. Great stuff. We had to go back through the records for this calendar year to see if this was the highest. Only Derek Phillips’ 47 at Phoenix was better, but Steve joins Colin Service on the second rung on 46 points. Then the next two were no less impressive with 40 points each, which needed a countback between Colm O’Donovan (h/c 20) and Paul Smith (h/c 2) with Colm having the better back nine, to take second. Paul Smith himself is no slouch around a golf course, and his score meant a gross 70, the best for the day, and he came third!! Bob Britton, in a rare appearance at Links ( he lives up the road aways), came in with a very handy 39 points to fill the final place on the podium.

Once again one “near pin’ went begging as no-one got onto the fourth green in regulation, but the other three were won by: Jim Galendez (7), John Pierrel (13), Bob Britton (16) Winner…….Steve Truelove (9)…… ....46 pts 2nd Place……Colm O’Donovan (20) ……..40 pts c/back

RESILIENT KAPUR READY TO BOUNCE BACK FROM INJURY turns to Thailand for the US$500,000 event. “I started feeling a sharp pain in my left foot and found out that I have a bone spur in my left foot and tendinitis in my right wrist. I tried playing through the pain but it became too frustrating so I decided to take two weeks off to get treated,” said Kapur. The father of one will draw inspiration from his winning memories from last December when he won the Royal Cup for his fourth Asian Tour victory. In doing so, Kapur also became the only player to win three titles in the 2017 season on the region’s premier Tour.

22 July 2018: India’s Shiv Kapur will be looking to put his injury woes behind when he bids for a successful title defence at the Royal Cup, which gets underway at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club from July 26 to 29. “With our line of work, it is so hard to take long breaks. I had physiotherapy and laser therapy but I knew the best way to get treated

was to take a break. Now I am at a 70%, I am trying not to play more than two weeks in a row and hoping I will peak at the right time. “I expected myself to perform at the same level following the win but I had a bit of a letdown this year with the injuries,” added Kapur, who had closed with a fourunder-par 67 to win by one shot over Prom Meesawat of Thailand. After claiming his breakthrough in Thailand in 2005, Kapur endured a long 12-year wait before securing his second title in Chinese Taipei last April. He went on to win the Panasonic Open India on home soil in November before capping off a dream season with a third

win at the Royal Cup. “After I won my first tournament in 2017, my goal was to become a multiple winner. To win three times in the season is like a dream season for me. Especially winning in front of my daughter and my wife, who came out to watch me. It was very special. I had a few lean years before last year so the wins just gave me the boost I needed,” said Kapur. Kapur will be joined by compatriot Gaganjeet Bhullar, Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat and Prom Meesawat, as well as American John Catlin, the first player to win twice on the Asian Tour this season, in the Thai showpiece. Held in honour of King Rama X, the 2018 Royal Cup will take place in conjunction with the 66th birthday celebration of His Majesty, which falls on July 28, Saturday. The Royal Cup marks the Tour’s fourth stop in Thailand this season following the Qualifying School in January, the Thailand Open in May and the Queen’s Cup last month, where Jazz Janewattananond surmounted a strong back-nine charge to claim his second Asian Tour title.

NUMBER ONE IN THE U.K. CHART.

At the ripe old age of 64, I could never have imagined that I could have my first U.K. official singles chart number one. However this piece of success has just happened and no one is more ‘gob-smacked’ than me. I previously have had two top ten singles successes with many other chart entries in the U.K. plus chart

hits around the world including a number one in Australia, either as a songwriter, producer, artist or a combination of these. SO, how did it it happen? Three previously unreleased songs that I recorded at my studio in Southampton, U.K. around fifteen years ago with late eighties multi hit pop singer SONIA, because of fan demand are now being released one at a time. In 1991, I had a top ten success with SONIA called ‘Only Fools (Never Fall In Love)’ masterminded at top record label BMG by my dear friend Simon Cowell, who had previously awarded me a nice sum of money with a publishing deal and advised that I spend it all on creating my own studio, which I did. I had co-writ-

ten the song with my ex ‘Brotherhood Of Man’ manager Tony Hiller and after the top ten success of the Motown style hit, we wrote a follow up in the same musical fashion called ‘If You Come Back To Me’. Unfortunately Simon decided with his infinite wisdom to

Hits album never materialised and so these tracks have been laying around gathering dust. Recently, however, some of her ardent fans, of which I’ve been staggered by how many there are, especially in Brazil of all places, have contacted me on discovering that these unreleased tracks exist and were desperate to hear them. So I put together a sampler of the three songs, uploaded to Yo u Tu b e and hey presto, the feedback was big love so fan power has now forced us to finally re-

lease the songs for worldwide digital distribution. Sonia’s army are very excited. On top of all that she is co starring in a U.K. TV series which is always the best promotion for any music release. ‘Dancing In The Driver’s Seat’ was rush released through Nova Distribution in the middle of July to co-incide with the TV series and immediately went to number 2 which made my girlfriend KayJay howl with laught when she saw the chart realizing that we were above superstars ‘Maroon 5’. Then, the next day, England got knocked out of the World Cup Finals and so the England song

‘Three Lions’ dropped off the top of the chart allowing our song to replace it at Number One. This time number two was the superb Jony Mitchell, whom I’ve always been a big fan of, so it was now me who was filled with amusement that I could write and produce a song that could climb over her. This all brings deep joy to me, not only because finally these songs will generate some income, but that the creativity that went into making the tracks will now bring happiness and sunshine to many around the world. That feeling is almost the best one….ha.

get Sonia to record covers of older material which didn’t do her any favours (see, he doesn’t always get it right). Years later SONIA called me to see if she could record the song we’d written especially for her as she was about to release a Greatest Hits album and needed some fresh material for it. I actually recorded that song with her plus two more that I’d co-written with a successful writer in L.A., Gordon Pogoda, one of which that had found its’ way into the double Oscar winning film ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. Unfortunately, Sonia’s Greatest
