POLICE ARREST DRUG DEALER
A dramatic chase and subsequent arrest of an alleged drug dealer took place in front of many local people, who witnesses this panic scene, some thought it was a recording of a movie, near the Tukcom computer and IT center in South Pattaya. Prior to the this action the Pattaya police had arrested
from Sod outside the Tukcom center. Arrangements was agreed between Sod and the undercover agent, and when Sod came back with the drug on his motor bike the police was waiting to make the arrest. Sod however would not give in to the police and left his motor bike and tried to escape on food,
a young man who had urine tested positive for the Ya-Ice drug. He explained that he had bought the drug from a Mr. Sod. The local police then set up an undercover action to buy the same kind of drug for 500 baht
during the chase Sod took off his jacket to deceive the chasing police officers. All his efforts was good for nothing as he eventually was caught by the “long arm of the law”.
PATTAYA BEACH RECLAMATION Pattaya Beach is the “Face of Pattaya” and various negatives related to the beach area sometime make us feel that we are “loosing our face”. The beach itself has been shrinking over the years, as about 60 years ago it was about 35 meters deep now only about 5 meters. The nearly 3 kilometers long beach will soon be back its former standard as an extensive beach reclamation is taking place. Pattaya Mayor Anan Charoenchasri informed that the first phase of 400 meters is about to be completed and after that section by section will be done until final completion, but additional sand fill will take place over the next five years aswell. The
sand that is used for the reclamation comes from Koh Rang about 10 kilometers south of Koh Larn island. The project was stopped due to complains about the color of the sand used was not matching the original sand color of Pattaya beach, but the matter was resolved with an explanation that the dark sand used would eventually because of the sunlight change color to white sand. So now we all look forward to see a beautiful rejuvenated Pattaya beach and hope that the authorities also will look after the cleanliness on the beach area, especially the promenade between the road and the beach.

DELEGATION VISITS KO LAN ISLAND A group of people representing various tourism related organizations and officials of Pattaya City Hall administration went to Ko Larn to meet with business people of the island and to brainstorm various serious matters now challenging Ko Larn, including waste management, wastewater treatment, environmental issues, traffic safety and general tourism development. The University of London is working on a plan to install a waste incinerator near the current location of the islands garbage and waste dump. An issue that is under serious in-
vestigation is the damage to coral reefs done by water scooters and other water activities, this is just one of many environmental matters that was discussed with the local people. The roads on Ko Larn are difficult to navigate for tourists that are not skilled in driving motorbikes, also because the roads are paved with concrete blocks and hills are steep that makes driving even more difficult. It has been decided to promote traffic safety and the challenges of the island roads to tourists to reduce the present rather large number of accidents.
THE MEANING OF THE BEACH FLAGS The rainy season normally brings heavy storms and rain to Pattaya and that means that swimming and boating off the beaches can be dangerous. Therefore there is a warning system in place. It consist of 3 colored flags: GREEN FLAG means that it is safe to play and swim in the waters of the beach. YELLOW FLAG means that people are asked to be careful playing and swimming of the beach. RED FLAG means that it is dangerous to play in the waters and swim or do boating of the beach. Disregarding these warning flags can result in drowning accidents. Some beaches do not have the warning flags
ISSUE 605 SEPTEMBER 2018
but have billboards on display warning tourists, however some of the merchants who rent out beach chairs and sell food and beverage, has been seen to cover the warning billboards because they think that the signs make people scared and as such hurt their business. So please be careful and look up for the warning flags or the warning billboards when you want to spend time on the beach.

OVERSTAY
After one of our clients who sued another person here in the Kingdom on civil and criminal charges for cheating and defamation, the criminal charge was finished as the defendant did not come to court and the court issued a warrant of arrest against him. When he received the warrant he went to see the police, and asked the police to issue a warrant of arrest for the defendant. At this time the police asked our client to show his passport, after which the police noticed that our client was on overstay by 8 days. The police at this point placed our client under
arrest for overstay and sent him to the Immigration Office in Jomtien. The client had to pay a fine of 4,000 baht, after that they sent him back to Immigration jail for 11 days. Then they brought our client to Immigration in Bangkok and are waiting for his deportation back to his own country. The other client we have came to our office with overstay of 8 months. His excuse for this is that he was very ill and could not leave his house to go to Immigration, but in this time he had not gone to a hospital nor had he been to
see a doctor so he had no proof or letter from a hospital to provide to Immigration. This client has been staying in Thailand for the last 17 years, he is married to a Thai but never applied for a marriage visa; instead he was on a tourist visa with in and out every 3 months. I recommended to the client that he leave the Kingdom quickly as the Immigration laws were just about to change and the new laws go into effect. I told the client he would have to pay the maximum 20,000 baht overstay at the airport and that when he comes back on a tourist visa that we would have to apply for him to get the retirement visa. We had booked him a trip to go to Laos, we sent him out after the new and strict enforced Immigration laws came into effect. I sent one of my staff to go pick up the client at the airport in Bangkok. When the client called my staff he was just at the Immigration counter. Immigration had taken the client’s passport and then they took the client into a
room and they told the client that he had a previous overstay as well as many in and out visa runs and border runs and that it was unacceptable and that they were going to arrest and deport him. At this point my staff got on the phone with the Immigration people in the airport and explained that our client had been sick before and that is why he was on overstay and this is why we had arranged for our client to leave the country and pay the overstay. We also told him to
have us arrange the retirement visa for him when he came back also that the client is married to a Thai and has a Thai marriage certificate. Once my staff talked with Immigration after about an hour they let our client in with a very strong warning that he had 30 days to get the retirement visa or face deportation. Lawyer Comment: The law has changed especially with the Immigration laws and visas. Thailand wants to change its im-

REMEMBERED EVERY DAY
Fifteen years ago, on the morning of the 16th August 2003, Father Ray Brennan, founder of several social projects here in Pattaya, took his last breath. For the previous twenty nine years he had lived in Pattaya, and during that time he had opened residential homes for children who were orphaned, neglected and abandoned. He gave a home to
him. Today, a decade and a half after he died, the Father Ray Foundation is continuing his work. The projects that Father Ray started are still open, and the Foundation has opened several new projects, including the Father Ray Day Care Center, Father Ray Children’s Village, Father Ray School for Children with Special
runaways, street kids and children who were from poverty. Not only did he provide a safe place to live for children, but he also opened several schools; a pre-school for deaf toddlers, another for school age blind and visually impaired children as well as a vocational training center for young adults living with a disability. Fifteen years ago not many people thought the work he started would continue after his death. Two years, maybe three at the most, that is how long people thought the Farther Ray Foundation would survive with out

Needs, as well as a Drop-In Center and a Technological College in the city of Nong Khai. Of all those living at the Children’s Home only a few older residents remember him. None of the residents from the Children’s Village were born when Father Ray died, but everyone knows Father Ray. Each location where the children live or the students with disabilities study there is a life size statue of him, where many of the children wai before leaving for school. Before each meal the children say a prayer, and they say a special thanks to Father Ray. At six o’clock on the morning of the anniversary of his death, and again thirteen hours later the children and students of the Father Ray Foundation gathered to remember Father Ray. As the sun was rising they gath-
ered to present alms to nine Buddhist monks from a nearby temple, making merit for Father Ray. That evening they attended a Memorial Mass for him at St. Nikolaus Church, the church where he was once parish priest and where he is buried. As the Mass came to an end, and once the final note of the final hymn was sung, the priests led a procession to Father Ray’s final resting place. As each person, young and old, stood in front of the grave they laid down a single red rose. While Thais placed their hands together and performed a wai, others bowed their heads and paid respect to Father Ray, the man whose work changed the lives of thousands and whose legacy continues here in Pattaya. HOMESTAY IN PATTAYA A new income opportunity is now available for people owning a house in Pattaya. Pattaya City Hall explained at a meeting that the
Thai Government policy is to encourage home owners with 1-4 rooms available to give overnight stays or Homestay accommoda-

12 VITAMINS YOU NEED IN YOUR 40S AND BEYOND……
You probably already know that calcium can help prevent osteoporosis, but do you know why aging bodies needs B12, magnesium and Zinc? ~ Dr.Kamaljit Singh. ·Calcium: With age, you can start to lose more of this mineral than you absorb. That can make your bones break easily (Osteoporosis), especially for women after menopause. Calcium helps your muscles, nerves, cells and blood vessels work right. You get most of it from your bones which get it from food. Women over 50 and men over 70 should get about 20% more than other adults. Milk, yoghurt and cheese are good sources. · Vitamin B12: It helps make blood and nerve cells. You get it naturally only from animal foods like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. Most Americans eat enough B12, but this might change as you age. As many as 30% people over 50s have a condition called atrophic gastritis that makes it harder for your body to absorb it from foods. You can still get this vitamin from “B12 fortified” foods like breakfast cereal, or from pills or shots. ·Vitamin D: Your body needs it to absorb calcium. So take them in tandem to help prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin D also helps your muscles, nerves and immune system work right. Most people get some vitamin D from sunlight. But your body is less able to convert Sun’s rays to Vitamin D as you age. It’s harder to get this vitamin from foods, but fatty fish like salmon is a good source. ·Vitamin B6: Your body uses it to fight germs and to make energy. It also helps babies’ brain growth. You need more B6 as you get older. Some studies have found
links between high B6 blood levels in seniors and better memory. But the vitamin doesn’t seem to improve mental abilities in people with dementia. Chickpeas are an easy and inexpensive source. So are liver and fatty fish. ·Magnesium: It helps your body make protein and bone, and keeps your blood sugar stable. You can get it from nuts, seeds, leafy greens. But older people tend to eat less of it. You are also more likely to have health conditions like digestive problems or to take medications that keep your body from absorbing magnesium easily. · Probiotics: “These friendly” bacteria are good for your gut. You get them from fermented foods like yoghurt or sauerkraut or from supplements. They can help with digestive issues like diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome, and may even protect against allergies. Probiotics are likely safe if you’re healthy. But talk to your doctor first if you have any medical issue or a weekend immune system. ·Omega 3s: These fatty acids are called “essential” because your body can’t make them. They are important for your eyes, brain and sperm cells. They also could help protect against age- related disease like Alzheimer’s, arthritis and muscular degeneration, which can cause blindness. Unless your doctor says otherwise, it’s best to get your omega-3s from food like fatty fish, walnuts, canola oil or flaxseed. · Zinc: Many American seniors don’t get enough of this underappreciated micronutrient. It helps your sense of smell and taste, and fight with infections and inflammation- all important jobs in older bodies. Zinc also protect your
ISSUE 605 SEPTEMBER 2018
vision. Oysters are far and away the best source of this mineral. Otherwise, you can get it from beef, crab, and fortified breakfast cereals. ·Selenium: It protects your cells from damage and infection, and keeps your thyroid working properly. Selenium also can keep muscles strong and may help prevent age- linked illness like dementia, some types of cancer and thyroid disease. Just 1 or 2 Brazil nuts a day should be enough. Don’t overdo it. Too much Selenium can make your hair fall out and turn your nails brittle. ·Potassium: Potassium plays a part in almost everything inside your body, including your heart, kidneys, muscles and nerves. It also may help protect against stroke, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Many people do not get enough. Dried apricots, bananas, spinach, milk, and yoghurt are good sources. Ask your doctor before you take supplements. They can interfere with medications for high blood pressure, migraine and other conditions. ·Folate: This natural form of Vitamin B9 is in leafy greens, nuts, beans and other foods. Pregnant women take a lab-made form of vitamin B9 called folic acid to help prevent birth defects. Folate helps with cell growth and may protect against stroke and certain cancers. Folate found in foods is safe. But too much folic acid from supplements or fortified foods can raise your odds for colon cancer or nerve damage. ·Fibers: You probably know fiber is good for you. But did you know it’s even more important as you age? Fiber helps protect against Strokes, helps you poop more regularly and lower your cholesterol and blood sugar-big benefits in older bodies. Women over 50 should get at least 21 grams a day while men needs 30 grams, but most people do not get that much. That’s equal to about 6-8 servings of whole grains or 8-10 servings of vegetables. ·Where to Get Them: Whether its vitamins, minerals or fiber, it’s a best to get them from foods in-
stead of pills. But that can be a challenge for some older people especially if you do not eat a balanced diet. You’re most likely lack of vitamin D, Potassium, Calcium or dietary fiber. If you think you need more you can get from foods, talk to your doctor about the supplements that will be safe with your meds, diet and health. ·Multivitamin: There’s little if any proof that multivitamins benefit seniors who are otherwise healthy. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against daily multivitamins to ward

CHINA FACES PROBLEM IN GETTING ITS BANKS TO LEND MORE MONEY The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) is tackling a problem it rarely had to worry about until recently - persuading banks to lend the money they have. Thanks to the central bank turning on the liquidity taps, the cost for banks to borrow from one another is now lower than the
surance Regulatory Commission over the weekend. Still, that only covers the credit extended by banks, and doesn’t include financing from the equity and bond markets or the shadow banking sector. Whether liquidity offered by the central bank can be utilised de-
creased scrutiny of state firms’ borrowing, a clean up of publicprivate partnership infrastructure projects, property curbs and a shadow banking contraction. But that success has come with costs. “Declining risk appetite in markets, as well as inactive officials and people at financial institutions,
lowest level in nearly four years. Regulatory requirements and policy uncertainty for the future make financial institutions hesitant to offer credit, according to Lu Ting, chief China economist at Nomura International in Hong Kong. He suggests policy makers better clarify the recent change in stance to dispel banks’ con-
cerns over any future blowback from what they’re asked to do now. Further monetary easing wouldn’t likely have any effect in lifting the economy, ANZ’s Qu said, suggesting instead that China turns to more targeted fiscal policies to improve risk appetite. “With transmission remaining
clogged, the urgency of another reserve-ratio cut any time soon drops as it won’t have much effect,” said Ding Shuang, chief economist for Greater China and North Asia at Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong. “It’s likely to take a year until demand eventually recovers in the economy.” Bloomberg

cost to borrow from the PBOC, but a large chunk of those funds is sitting idle. That money isn’t feeding into the wider economy, especially not to cash- strapped smaller firms, as lenders are unwilling to make loans or buy risky bonds. With China in a worsening trade war with the US and also trying to control already large debts, ensuring funds get to needy companies is vital to sustain growth. Since the start of August, the central bank has begun softening rules to encourage lending, and a top-level meeting chaired by Vice Premier Liu He called for more efforts in “unclogging” the transmission mechanism, underlining the government’s sense of urgency. Their efforts have had some initial success - China’s new yuan loans rose more than expected to 1.45 trillion yuan ($288 billion) in July, according to preliminary data released by the Banking and In-
pends on the “willingness and capacity” of both the supply and demand sides, the PBOC said in its quarterly report last week. Joint action from monetary, fiscal and regulatory authorities is needed to ensure better transmission, it said. “Banks still don’t have enough confidence - they’re still concerned about the rising credit risks amid a slower China economy, a return of the deleveraging campaign and the worsening trade war,” said David Qu, a Shanghai-based economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group.
Subdued demand
While transmission wasn’t much of an issue when banks were working at full speed to turn base money into loans, the demand for and supply of loans is more subdued now. That’s partly due to the success of President Xi Jinping’s campaign to cut financial risk, with in-

gest member of FTSE’s EM index, reported the first drop in profits for at least a decade, sending its US-listed shares down by 6.7 per cent — the biggest one-day drop in five months — to the lowest level in a year. Baidu and Alibaba’s US stocks managed to bounce from their lows but ended Wednesday down 1.3 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively. The Bats slide came as broader pressures rose in China, the biggest and most influential developing economy. The CSI300 index of Shanghai and Shenzhen shares is down 18 per cent this year, as investors have grown increasingly concerned over slowing growth and a trade dispute with the US. “China has had this huge overhang all year, and this [the tech sell-off] is the latest chapter in a story that has been building for months,” said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist atInvesco. In a sign of the worries about China, the country’s offshore renminbi, which trades in major hubs outside of China, also took a fresh hit. Wednesday’s low of Rmb6.9487 was the weakest level since January 2017. Capital Economics highlighted that Chinese economic data have weakened lately, and argued that this was at least as big a threat as the heightened trade tensions. “These headwinds mean that China’s economy will continue to slow over the rest of this year. And this is a key reason why we think that EM assets will generally con-

tinue to struggle, regardless of what happens in Turkey,” the research house wrote on Wednesday. EM currencies and bonds also suffered further hits. While the Turkish lira jumped more than 7 per cent against the dollar, as the government moved to curtail investors’ ability to bet against the country’s currency, most other major EM currency drooped against the greenback on Wednesday. Commodity markets, where emerging economies are the major source of demand, also weakened sharply on Wednesday. Copper, widely seen as a barometer of economic growth due to its use in construction, wiring and consumer goods, dropped 1.8 per cent to $US6,044 a tonne, its lowest level in more than a year. The slide on Wednesday pushed the metal also into bear market territory, having fallen from $US7,348 in June. Oil was also affected, with Brent crude oil falling 2.4 per cent to $US70.76 a barrel, its lowest level in four months. With the EM turbulence denting developed markets as well, investors bought up safer assets such as US Treasuries. The 10-year note yield was down 4 basis points at 2.86 per cent by the end of the New York trading day, at one point flattening the” yield curve” — the difference between short and long-term bond yields — to a 11-year low of 23.4bp.

impacts heavily on medium- and small-sized companies and private firms,” said Ma Jun, a central-bank adviser. The key to avoiding a dramatic shift in risk appetite and improving transmission is for the government’s policies to curb debt to be done at a controlled pace, Ma said, adding that this is “delicate, technical work.” Non-banking funding channels aren’t a better source of money. Yield for low-rated bonds, usually sold by smaller companies, were at the highest since late 2014, and only recovered after the PBOC signal that they could be used for loan collateral.
New York/London I Emerging markets tumbled by the most in six months on Wednesday and remained weak on Thursday, slumping into a bear market as investors were spooked by a commodity price rout, currency turmoil and disappointing results from one of China’s technology giants. In spite of a recovery in the Turkish lira after the country cracked down on short selling of the currency, the FTSE Emerging Index of stocks in the developing world fell as much as 2.3 per cent on Wednesday. That took the benchmark’s decline since its January 26 peak to more than 20 per cent — the usual definition of a bear market. The gauge ended the day down 2.1 per cent, for a 19.7 per cent slump since January’s high. Stocks in Asia continued to fall on Thursday. Emerging markets have faced mounting pressure over the past few months. Concerns over trade wars have weighed heavily, while rising US interest rates and the US dollar’s renaissance have dented the lustre of emerging markets, and contributed to crises in more vulnerable countries which are dependent on capital inflows, such as Argentina and Turkey. The latest slump was exacerbated by dismal results from Tencent, one of the three Chinese tech behemoths dubbed “Bats” — Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent — which depressed Asian markets and infected the US technology sector. Tencent, which is the single big-

in warm weather is through sweat. As sweat evaporates, it cools the tissues beneath. Lots of sweating reduces the body’s water level, and this loss of fluid affects normal bodily functions. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, to avoid dehydration, active people should drink at least 16- 20 ounces of fluid one to two hours before an outdoor activity. After that, you should consume 6 to 12 ounces of fluid every 10 to 15 minutes that you are outside. When you are finished with the activity, you should drink more. How much more? To replace what you have lost: at least another 16 to 24 ounces (2- 3 cups).
Warm weather brings with it thoughts of cool ocean breezes, napping in a hammock, and sipping a tall glass of lemonade. Now hold on to the mental image of that lemonade because summer is also a time to be wary of dehydration: the lack of sufficient water in the body. Water is important to the body at all times, but especially in warm weather. It keeps the body from overheating. When you exercise, your muscles generate heat. To keep from burning up, your body needs to get rid of that heat. The main way the body discards heat

PLANET FOOTBALL Planet Football is a multi-sport facility based in Pattaya, which is the home of FC Planet Football Team. The place was founded by English Martin Kinsella who had the vision to create a safe environment for local children to play football, with addition of top class coaching. Our future is in the hands of the young, but moulded by experienced minds. They teach their managers and coaches to start the day with one idea in mind, that they have a great opportunity to mould a child’s life through sport. So the child can one day become future leader in sport in the community,
region, and even Thailand. They are extremely passionate about nurturing and developing the children in our community to be the best of their ability, and we feel at Planet Football we are build-
ing a solid foundation. Thy believe that the best way to become a better athlete is to enjoy the game you are playing, and that sport is the best way to bring people of all ages together. Pattaya People Television made an interview with the Manager of Planet Football English John Ungi, who gave a detailed information about the activities and many sports opportunities the place offer more than football, being Floorball, Basketball and Gymnastics. Planet Football is located on this address: Soi Siam Country Club 55/15 Moo 2, Pattaya. Phone.: 038-248-212, 08-90944305, 085-157-5186.
BEACH FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
On the back of the super successful “Pattaya Beach Football Cup” over 13 years, that is dominated by both foreign players and foreign spectators, the Thai community staged a similar sports event on the same location as the “Farang Beach Football” on Jomtien Beach Road on the sea side opposite the big marked. Eight teams participated, they were: “Community of Wat Bunyan Kanjanaram”, “The Salt Team”, “Mini Siam Team”, “Chaiyapruk 55”, “Team Umbola”, “The Home Team”, “VIP Team Nong Prue” and “Jomtien Beach Operators”.
Pattaya City Hall was the organizers of the event. We hope that this tournament will create interest in
Beach Football and bring more Thais to watch the exciting “International” tournament next year
SAMBASOCCER PLAYER INVITED FOR TRIALS IN FRANCE emy based just off South Pattaya Road at the Starsoccer fields. We have 3 sections to the Academy. 1) Multi Activity Coaching which developes the strength, co–ordination, speed and agility of children as well as coaching them in Football. The main priority is that the children have fun while getting exercise, meeting new friends and learning how to play Football Brazilian style. We have a professional exercise program and a sports diet no matter the ability as we believe this improves all aspects of a childs life. I have one player who when he arrived ran twice around the field, now 10 months later he runs 30 times around the field. A monthly assessment is done on each acad-
One of the first players that was coached by Lionel Izaaks, owner of Sambasoccer Thailand, has been invited to attend trials in France with Stade Boujelais, French National Under 17 Team and the Regional Under 17 Team. James Autaa15 years old is presently in France undergoing trials for a place in the Regional or National Under 17 Team. James was privately coached at Sambasoccer last year and then moved to France to play in Bordeaux. I played James here in senior matches where he showed me just how good he was. I knew then that he had a good chance of
making it in the professional world of football, so after discussions with his father it was decided that he play in Bordeaux for a year and we go from there. All of us at Sambasoccer wish James best of luck. Sambasoccer is also getting a visit in September from Robert Hughes the CEO of Armourflex. Armourflex Manufacture the strongest and lightest shin pads and ankle guards. Robert will be talking to the boys about protection of legs in football. He will also be featured on Pattaya People Television Channel. Sambasoccer is a Football Acad-

emy member by means of speed tests, endurance tests and strength tests. We teach the children to use and experiment as much of their given talent as pos-
sible and to become creative on the field. Once again this must all be fun. Matches are arranged for weekends and all children play no matter their ability.
3) Private coaching. This is available and will only be done after the player has been assessed. This year Sambasoccer will be involved in many new ventures. We coach the boys and now one girl from Father Ray Childrens Home and I am happy to say we now have 24 boys attending training and matches are arranged for them in conjunction with the Academy players. Sambasoccer has now been appointed as the Sole Representative of MGC Sports of London. We represent players and coaches from most countries in the world. Any players between the ages of 6 and 14 are welcome to come down and join us for a training session on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 5 PM and 7 PM. PATTAYA UTD – UNBEATEN IN SIX
After winning an amazing three away Thai Premier League ties in July against Air Force Central 3-2, Bangkok Utd. 2-1 and Suphanburi FC. 2-1, Pattaya Utd. added yet another away win at the beginning of August beating local rivals Chonburi 2-1. The winner was scored by Lukian with the last kick of the match in time added on and, together with two home draws, means that the Dolphins are now unbeaten in the last six games. This has placed them a respectable 7th in the Thai
Premier League on 38 points going into the month long break until the next match, a home game against Nakhon Ratchisma FC on September 5th at 7pm. However, this is no time to be complacent as the drop zone is still only 8 points away so United must keep up this glorious run until the end of the season with an upcoming busy months schedule. Upcoming home games in September are: Nakhon Ratchisma FC on

ISSUE 605 SEPTEMBER 2018
BUNKER BOYS Monday, August 6th, Pattavia 1st Les Hall (25) 35 points 2nd Geoff Parker (14) 35 points 3rd Peter Allen (28) 33 points Near pins Tony Robbins, Alan Sullivan, Robbie Watts. Another good low season number of thirteen golfers for the first game of the week at Pattavia. Play got underway on time and in some of the most pleasant conditions for golf with no wind, very mild temperatures, and most importantly at this course no fruit flies. We had a couple of light showers throughout the round but not heavy enough to stop play. In what is becoming too regular an occurrence our last group lost touch with the rest of the field and finished at least a half hour after everyone else. This would be an intolerable situation in high season, but today didn’t inconvenience anyone. One of our members who shall remain nameless received a severe censure for uncharacteristic and unbecoming behavior on the last green, no more to be said. Today’s winner was Les Hall who returned a card of thirty-five points. Second place went to Geoff Parker on countback. Despite losing four points off his handicap recently Peter Allen still figures in the winners circle taking third place on thirty-three points. Only three of the four near pins were taken, one each to Tony Robbins, Alan Sullivan, and Robbie Watts. Wednesday, August 8th
Pleasant Valley 1st Robbie Watts (9) 40 points 2nd Michael Brett (14) 37 points 3rd Alan Sullivan (12) 34 points Near pins Jimmy Carr, Raleigh Gosney, and Michael Brett X 2. Pleasant Valley was the venue for a pleasant round of golf for the Bunker Boys today. The course was uncrowded so play proceeded at a good pace. As this is a wet course with poor drainage it was decided to apply the pick, clean, and place rule, however as it turned out it wasn’t necessary except in a very few areas. There wasn’t much run on the fairways and with the blue tees set well back, the course played longer than normal. As there are a few holes with long carries off the tees a few of our shorter hitters sat out today’s round. Robbie Watts put in a sizzling round of forty-points which included five birdies to take first place. Second, went to Michael Brett who could have outdone Robbie except for two big mistakes resulting in wipes and some indifferent putting. Third place went to Alan Sullivan who despite an additional handicap today returned a score of thirty-four points. Near pins went to Raleigh Gosney, Jimmy Carr and two to Michael Brett. Robbie claimed one of the near pins but forgot to put his name on the flag, tough luck. Friday, August 10th Crystal Bay 1st Geoff Cox (19) Net 70 2nd Michael Brett (14) Net 76 3rd Les Hall (25) Net 77 Near pins Robbie Watts X 2,
ISSUE 605 SEPTEMBER 2018
Michael Brett X 2. The golfing week ended on a sad note with the untimely passing of thirty-six-year-old Australian Jarrod Lyle who succumb to a third attack of an aggressive cancer. During his short life, Jarrod displayed a pleasant nature, a ready smile and an indomitable fighting spirit, coupled with solid golfing ability. His passing may give cause for reflection to many of Pattaya’s older golfers who winge and complain for the slightest reason when they should be celebrating the fact that they have reached a mature age and can still play this wonderful if sometimes frustrating game. Crystal Bay was the venue for the last game of the week, a course on which scoring is usually high. Today this was not the case and even though a strong wing made play tricky it still doesn’t explain the low scores. Geoff Cox was the only one to register a decent score with a net seventy. Michael Brett took second with seventysix and Les Hall rounded out the scoring with a net seventy-seven. Only two near pins were taken so two each to Robbie Watts and Michael Brett. As the round was medal format there are usually one or two high numbers on cards, today the highest recorded was a ten from Robbie Watts, one feels a serious lapse in concentration. Winner at Crystal Bay, Geoff Cox. Monday, August 13th, Mountain Shadow 1st Michael Brett (14) 35 points 2nd Raleigh Gosney (20) 31 points 3rd Peter Allen (28) 30 points. Near pins Les Cobban X 2, Michael Brett X 2 The golfing week got off to a difficult start with a round at the challenging Mountain Shadow course. Scoring is always difficult at this course, today an extremely strong gusty wind at times made the course virtually unplayable and as a result, scores were in the low to very low range. Even our big guns such as Geoff Parker, Les Cobban, Robbie Watts and Jimmy Carr failed to register thirty points, it’s unusual for all to fail at the same time. Peter Allen continues to make it into the winner’s circle and took third place with thirty points. Peter has lost four strokes off his
handicap in recent times, could be he needs to lose a few more. Raleigh Gosney came in second a stroke ahead of Peter on thirtyone points whilst Michael Brett scrambled well and took first with thirty-five points. Only two near pins were registered so two each to Les Cobban and Michael Brett. Off the course, the Bunker Boys recently ran a competition to pick the winner of The Open and the PGA and remarkably the winner on both occasions was Tony Robbin’s dog, who wouldn’t like a dog like that. Wednesday, 15th August Treasure Hill 1st Geoff Parker (14) 27 points 2nd Jack Penny (18) 27 points 3rd Tony Robbins (24) 27 points Near pins Peter Allen, and Frank Quinlan X 2.
Today the days of forty-four points being the winning score seemed a very distant memory. There is no way to sugar coat today’s results, four golfers were locked together on twenty-seven points and separated on countback. This is the lowest winning score anyone can remember for a long time, with no particular reason for the low scores. Geoff Parker took first place, Kiwi Jack Penny second and Tony Robbins third, the one to miss out was Peter Allen also on twentyseven, however, Peter did win a near pin and Frank Quinlan got two. After such a disastrous day one can only hope for better results on Friday. Today Jimmy Carr should have won except that he incurred a two-shot penalty not once but twice by playing the
wrong ball, even with his own distinctive ball markings, Alzheimer’s strikes again. Friday, August 17th Kings Naga 1st Trevor Priestley (22) 33 points 2nd Geoff Cox (18) 33 points 3rd Frank Quinlan (36) 29 points Near pins Les Cobban X 2, Les Hall X 2. Another good low season number of thirteen for the last game of the week at the Kings Naga course. The condition of the course could best be described as shabby, fairways were in need of mowing, greens slow and bumpy. Overall the course would benefit from a bit of TLC but at the green fee price of three hundred baht that might be a bit much to expect. The game was punctuated by intermittent showers, but never heavy enough to halt play. Once again the issue of how to mark a golf card correctly raised its head and a mathematical effort by one of our members added to the confusion. After much checking and cross-checking, Trevor Priestley was declared the winner on countback from Geoff Cox who has had a good run of form in the last two weeks. Third went to Frank Quinlan who returned to the winner’s circle after a long absence. Only two near pins were claimed so two each to Les Cobban and Les Hall. Winner at Treasure Hill Geoff Parker

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday August 14, Greenwood – St, John Davis Takes 1st at Greenwood Low season, the organizers easy time of the year, the ever popular Greenwood on the schedule, and a good chance of decent weather, does it get better? With regulars scattered around Thailand and indeed the world on personal trips, a small but enthusiastic group headed out for Greenwood after their “Golfer’s Breakfast” and complementary coffee or tea at BJ’s. The weather looked promising with the chance of some wind and possible rain showers, but nothing severe showing up on the local weather radars. On arrival after the relatively easy
drive to the course, we had an easy check-in, including a new special “Tuesday All-In” rate making it especially attractive for those taking carts, and were soon gathered on A-1 to begin our journey around the “A” & “C” nines. There seemed to be quite a few golfers at the course however the starter had effectively started other groups off C-1 and we all ended up having clear sailing all the way around. The course was in excellent condition, good grass under the ball and the greens running smoothly at a reasonable speed. The only problem mentioned was inconsistency of bunkers with some packed and firm and some loose and fluffy, but hey, not suppose to be there anyway. They are called hazards for a rea-
son. Greenwood is usually a course that players score well on and with the weather fully cooperating this day, how would the Tropical Golfers fair, would they beat the course or would Greenwood A/C come out on top? Round over, cards collected, and the group assembled back at BJ’s, some eating a late lunch, all were ready to learn the results of the day and so without further delay; 1st Place: John Davis (c/h 12) 35 pts on c/b over, 2nd Place: Frank Xin (31) 35 pts 3rd Place: John Pierrel (14) 34 pts 4th Place: Brian Parish (13) 32 pts on c/b over Dick Warberg and Mashi Kaneta We therefore have to concede that on this day Greenwood A/C held its own with no Tropical Golfer meeting, let alone beating, their handicap. However, rest assured The Tropical Golfers will return to renew the battle. The Tropical Golf Group, a PSC affiliated group, generally play every Tuesday and Friday, meeting at “The BJ Holiday Lodge” located just off Pattaya Beach Rd on Soi 3. Stop by and check our bulletin board located in the restaurant. All levels of golfing ability are welcome for our friendly competitions. Tuesday, August 21, Bangpakong Riverside – St Steady John Davis Tops the Field Middle of the month and once again we are scheduled to test
our golfing skills against a fine venue in Bangpakong Riverside Country Club (BRCC). With the motorway making the hour long trip less of a hassle, the course seemingly always in very good condition, and a reasonable walking rate on offer, BRCC is a favorite for the Tropical Golfers. On our July visit there was still some work going on with tree additions, new waste areas and bunkers, and changes to internal OB’s. Just what would we find today? After a quick check-in and hardly time for a practice putt, the starter had us rounded up and the first group headed down the first hole. The organizers had decided to test the group this day by playing from the longer Blue tees and, with very cloudy conditions in the area, al-
affiliated venue we welcome all golfers. Call 089 253 5440 (Willem Lasonder) for scheduling or enquiries. Paddy Devereux on fire at the Emerald Tuesday 14th August we went to the Emerald. It was a nice day with overcast and sometimes a sunbeam. There was a nice breeze to make the conditions complete. The course was in good condition and inviting for good scores. SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Good courses Tuesday 7th August we went to Pattavia. We had a beautiful day with very nice weather. It was clouded and we had a nice breeze and not too much sun. The course was in perfect condition. This course gives you really value for money. It is not an easy course and the greens are always challenges. But we had quite good scores. The winning scores were close together. Winner was Neil Harvey with 38 stable ford points. Second Paddy Devereux with 37 stable ford points, beating Phil Waite on the count back.
The nears to the pin were for Neil Harvey and Phil Waite. Mountain Shadow was our venue for Thursday 9th August. Today we welcomed 2 guest players from another group. Also today we were very happy with the conditions. It is almost boring, but we always avoid the rain. The course was also in very good condition. So we had another enjoyable day playing golf. Our hole-in-1 man, Stanley Rees, showed a good form and won with 36 stable ford points, beating Dave Smith on the count back. Third was Neil Harvey with 32 stable ford points. low “Ball-in-Hand” through the green. Generally the group plays BRCC from the White tees at 6319 yds so how would they do with an additional 360 yds to contend with. We do also play off Course Handicaps so theoretically it should all balance out. We must report that it seems all the major work is done and the course ready for the coming high season. The only comment would be that the new areas of sand, some with trees or grass within, need to be so identified to avoid confusion over whether that sandy area is a bunker or a waste area. The fairways are in great condition, the greens running at a reasonable place and true. In addition the weather stayed cloudy, with a bit of breeze so the
temperature was very good for golf and no rain fell. Lift, clean, and place was welcome especially around the greens due to soft ground conditions due to irrigation. Round finished in a little over 4 hours, showered and a bit of time relaxing on the terrace with a coffee or soft drink, we were all headed back by 3:00 p.m. to gather at BJ’s for the presentation and see how all faired off the Blues. With 40 points, John Davis (c/h 12) topped the group. John has been playing excellent golf recently as his Handicap Index steadily drops. Following John were Brian Perish (12), 38 pts, Don Carmody (29), 36 pts, and Gordon Clegg (28) with a great back 9, edging out Dick Warberg (22) on 35 pts for the final spot. To round out the accolades, Warberg took the Best Front 9 score while Steve Truelove recorded the Best Back 9 score. Well done to all and it seems playing from the Blue tees had little impact on the play either for lower or higher handicappers. Last month off the Whites, the top 4 all had 38 or 39 points playing off similar handicap levels. It is after all, all about course management and playing the course laid out to the best of one’s ability whatever their handicap level. Now if the courses would get their “Indexing” of holes based on actual difficulty instead of, par 3’s are easy and par 5’s are difficult!

we welcomed our regular player Martin Hayes gain. The weather was about the same as Tuesday, but the breeze was stronger. The condition of the course was a little bit disappointing. The fairways need better mowing and the sanding was also not well done. Nevertheless we had another enjoyable day playing golf. The scores were not of the same level as Tuesday, only Jonathan Pratt had a good result and won with 39 stable ford points. Second was Willem Lasonder with 33 stable ford points, beating Dave Smith on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Phill Waite, Daniel Oshiro, Paddy Devereux and Willem Lasonder.

GROWLING SWAN STABLEFORD. CRYSTAL BAY G.C. – 16th August, 2018. “It’s that man Riley again, when will this stop.” Playing one of our favorite courses today, a course that is very popular with our golfers. We had a 10 am tee time and all golfers had arrived well in advance. Two buses left well in front of our allotted time for departure! As popular as this course generally is, we could only muster eighteen golfers for this days event, a bit of a disappointment but that’s how it goes.. As per usual The Course was in great nick, we saddled up to play Courses B & A and played them in that order teeing off in front of our allotted time. Still not a lot of golfers on courses. All good no complaints regarding the condition of the course but then again we rarely

After going through a rough patch with his golf ( don’t most of us?), and wearing the “wig” at least once, he has burst out of it with a fine 40 points. Well done.. Paul Smith, handicap 2, has to almost par the course to get a win. But gross 74 is pretty good, and he took second on a countback over Peter Henshaw, both on 36 points. Bernie Stafford and Peter Wilson fought out the minor placings on 35 points. Khao Kheow is not known for producing high stableford scores, so these five and the next four places have done very well. This course is going through “low season” maintenance and upgrade. The greens were done first and are in excellent condition and, even though there had been some rain about recently, had some good pace.

Eighteen players gave us the one division only with three placing’s and we had all novelties in play! It was Frank Riley again, “Like a fine bottle of Red Wine he is getting better with age.” Thirty eight points put him ahead of the pack for the second time in a week. Great stuff “Sir Francis”, let’s hope that there are a few more wins under your belt. Second placing went to the count back, thirty seven points saw Rocky Lawson (who is going well this trip) all tied up with newcomer Jack Penny after 18 holes. PATTAVIA G.C. – 20th August, 2018. “Steve Younger returns to the Top of the Podium.” In starting this report this morning I have rec some very sad news, Mike Winfield had lost his battle and has passed away. Mike was a Café Kronberg Golfer that turned out for us on the odd occasion, he leaves behind his loving wife Ann and family, he was also a great mate and walking/eating buddy of Stuart Rifkin’s. R.I.P. MIKE WINFIELD. I am sorry to say that this report may be missing some information, I am embarrassed to announce that my run sheet went missing so some info will be correct and the rest I will make up as I go! If I have missed something or someone I do apologize. With 10 am tee time and all golfers arriving well in advance we headed off. It was only the one bus that left heading for “The Old Plantation Course” Sad to say that only fifteen chanced their arm today as I believe that is a better course than some and deserves a better turn out than this! As per usual The Course was in

We did play Lift clean and place as there was some water lying in certain places on the fairway. With fifteen golfers we played the one division only with three placing’s and we had all novelties in play! It was Steve Younger that returned to the winning circle after a bad run of injuries, getting knocked over by a “Rampaging Elephant” was the one injury that I thought that he would not survive. Tee boxes are almost there, and the fairways are looking very good. Some on the “A” course almost look as if the grass has been painted on they are so good. Particularly A2. Most importantly, the fairways are nicely mown and provide good lies. The weather today started beautifully with a nice breeze and overcast conditions. Carts were on path only due to recent rains. By the second nine the sun was peeping through and things became a little more steamy. The fairways had some mud in places but otherwise quite firm. S/ford Davies Serves up Another Treat The Pattaya Links Golf Society celebrated its one hundredth club competition this year with another
visit to the sumptuous Laem Chabang Country Club to play a stableford round on the B and C nines which were in excellent condition despite some heavy rain just 24 hours before. Carts were limited to paths only and so preferred lies on the fairways applied, though in truth, hardly any golfer felt the need to apply the local rule. Fairways were a little soft but still afforded some run and the greens were splendid, running with a lot of pace. So it was that the eight groups set off on time in overcast conditions but thankfully the rain stayed away, except for the slightest misty spattering at the end of the front nine. Two flights were set today with the cut at eighteen. Playing the C nine second always gives golfers a torrid time as the nine holes are so demanding. It’s a hard slog with long par fours, long lateral bunkers and the natural loss of energy that the previous holes have drained, but today we could have been proved wrong. In the top flight Phil Davies, suffering a recent loss of confidence, found his game again and played the back nine to par “off the sticks” in a winning performance which gave him 40 points off his recently increased handicap of nine. Just how good is that? Maybe ask runner-up Toby Glass who managed to tie the winning score, losing on countback to
Phil’s memorable back nine. Kevin LaBar was third with a very solid 37 points whilst Peter McDonald took fourth with 34 points. In the second flight Frank Riley was fourth with 33 points, one behind third placed John Coetzee. The runner-up was Japanese newbie Naka Kazu whose length defied his moderate handicap and he finished with 39 points, leaving the winner Brian Wilkinson with forty-one. SPORTING ACHIEVERS
The annual two day sporting competition recently took place at the Pattaya Redemptorist Technological College for People with Disabilities, with more than one hundred and fifty students taking part. As in previous years the students were divided into four coloured teams, and points were competed for in a variety of sports: athletics, field (shot, javelin and discus), swimming, boccia, wheelchair fencing, petanque,
wheelchair basketball and two types of volleyball, standing and sitting. The team sport heats and finals had taken place over several weeks so the two day competitions were taken up with mostly the athletics, swimming and field events. As there are many categories of disability, so there are many races for each competition. In the 100m race for men there is the race for

wheelchair users with upper body strength and one for those with a weak upper body. There is a 100m running race for amputees, lower and upper limbs, upper body weakness and for those with cerebral palsy. And after the 100m race there is also the 200m, 400m, 800m and the 1500m races with all the various categories. It’s been said many times that taking part in a sport is not all about winning, but for the athlete who trains and works hard everyday then crossing the finish line first and winning points for your team is the one and only goal. But there are some athletes who, due to the severity of their disability, may have no chance of ever winning a race; but they take part because even coming last in a race earns your team at least one point. The eventual winners were the Green Team, and if you were in Pattaya and listening quietly at 4p.m. on the afternoon of the 26th of July, you may just have heard them cheering and screaming in delight; they were so loud and excited. Over the years the school has produced many athletes who have gone on to represent the school and province at national level. A few have gone on to participate in the S.E. Asia Games, Asian Games and the Paralympics, bring back to Pattaya their medals and their influence. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@frray.org

CREATING A NEW POP SENSATION – GURLZ?
After creating the hit pop band STEPS in 1997 and then trying to do it again a few years later with various line ups who hadn’t the required talent, enthusiasm or ambition required to see the job through, I decided to try and stop making further attempts at inflicting my special brand of pop cheesiness on to an unsuspecting public. That was until a couple of years ago when I happened to befriend a bar owner in this fun city of Pattaya, Thailand who had become famous all over the UK, Australia and various other countries, as the star of a UK TV series called …. ‘Ladyboys’. After Scott had appeared on my 96FM radio show,
Morning Glory, talking about his relationship with his long term ladyboy partner, one evening, whilst having an orange juice or three at Scott’s bar, ‘Sensations’, which is frequented mainly by…. Ladyboys, their male friends and tourists who had witnessed the bar on TV and wanted to see it in reality, I suddenly had a ‘light bulb moment’. Being around a bunch of covorting Ladyboys, I couldn’t help
at the idea and flew over to Pattaya to meet us. The result was a three part TV ‘fly on the wall’ documentary style series where I, your humble music biz guru, set about putting together a pop band …with a difference. They’re not a girl band, not a boy band, but a Ladyboy band. Yes, a line up similar to the Spice Girls, but with ‘balls’. I wrote what I think are a few ‘tongue in cheek’ hits, auditioned and produced an X Factor style final in front of a live audience at
but notice how entertaining they all were. I suddenly saw a gap in the current music market. A Ladyboy pop band, with a little ‘extra’, in the syle of ‘Girls Aloud’ or ‘The Pussycat Dolls’. I put the idea to Scott who immediately contacted Redback Productions, the makers of the highly successful ‘Laydyboys’ series. They went ‘bananas’
the Colloseum Theatre in Theppasit Road which the TV series producers labelled ‘water cooler TV’, recorded the singers in my studio and successfully got the final line up to perform on one of Thailand’s top rated national TV programs ‘The Woody Show’ (you really can’t make his stuff up)…..and was all filmed….in 6 weeks! the look of the final band until it has been premiered on Sky Living in the UK. The series was premiered in the
ISSUE 605 SEPTEMBER 2018
U.K and then was shown in Australia, all over Europe, the Phillipines and elsewhere. An international Ladyboy band (called GURLZ?) singing in English and in a contemporary pop style is history in the making and was a complete success. However, during the time it took me to make a full album and for the producers to edit and complete the TV series, various key members of the band suddenly dissapeard from Pattaya and so a proposed tour of the U.K. and other countries was postponed. There was much interest in this third series called ‘Ladyboys…The Band’ as there had been in the first two and I’m sure a few macho guys out there were secretly questioning their preferred tastes…if you know what I mean. I had many a sleepless night (make up your own jokes) but a lot of fun making this ‘drama’ or ‘reality show’ and it turned out as entertaining for viewers around the world as it was for us all making it. The CD album is pressed and avail-
able with interest in the whole project now coming from the internationally famous show ‘The Ladyboys Of Bangkok’ which performs all over the world. I’m also in talks with a marketeering specialist who has
already come up with the idea of replica band dolls….and you know what that means? The album GURLZ? is available now at DISCOGS www.discogs.com/Gurlz-Gurlz/ release/12046861
