SEAFOOD BONANZA
So getting invited to check out this huge buffet out was an exciting proposition as I had no doubt Centara would do it first class. First let me say there is no better place to take the kids. They
are truly set up to keep them entertained! Balloon animal maker clown, stag shows of magic and sing alongs, birthday parties, even a cotton candy station. Numerous clowns and cartoon characters in costumes. I never

understand why anyone would have mango and sticky rice in such a place, but the kids do. Alternatively, you can just retreat to a romantic quiet corner. This was an incredibly complete buffet. Very nice Antipasti station, variety of cheeses hard and soft (inc. blue) and all the Italian meats and breads. Small serving for me, but quality cheeses are so rare in Thailand. Nice salad bar, the shrimp tacos were fantastic! Even though it is advertised as a sea food buffet, first stop was a meat carving station of a perfectly cooked medium rare prime rib. YUM! And I cannot eat this without a touch of mashed potatoes and gravy! There was even dim sum here, but I couldn’t dare waste any space in my belly before getting to the sea food. So at the sea food BBQ, there were tiger prawns and lobster tails. I hurt myself a little here. Moving on to the shellfish table, very fresh, two types of oysters, clams, mussels crab legs and huge steamed shrimps.. All very fresh! The cooked main course buffet had many dishes, but I only tried what appeared to be a beef bourginone, but it was spicy. Ok elsewhere, but more lobster tails were calling my name. A huge desert bar with far too many choices to try, lots of fruits, marshmallow candies for the kids, but the mango mousse was delicious! All in all a delightful meal, and an early to bed follow up..

CONFLICTING LAWS
In the year 1938 the Thai court issued the conflict law act regarding the regulations of two different kingdoms (or another country) including itself, detailing what rules it should use when the two entities have conflicting laws. The following examples should give you an idea and help you understand how the conflict laws act works here in Thailand. The first example is that of a UK man, after having married his UK wife
wrote his last will and testament giving a part of his estate to her. Later the couple split and got a divorce, the UK man later married again, this time with a Thai wife. When the UK man passed away, by UK law the last will and testament that was written cannot be used as they had divorced. But by Thai law the will would still be in effect if the domicile (place of death) is in Thailand and is thus still legal under Thai law.
ISSUE 607 ď Ź NOVEMBER 2018
The second example is if a foreign person is disabled and incapable of caring for themselves, then a legal guardian is required to fulfill their needs and care for them. If you want to apply for legal guardianship then there are two things to consider; first the Thai courts need to make sure that by Thai law it is possible, making sure guardianship can be granted outside of the home country of the afflicted person. The second is to check with the laws of the foreigner’s country as to whether a Thai or another foreign person is eligible to be their guardian outside of their home country. It is necessary to show these laws along with their translations in a Thai court before a
guardianship case is allowed to pass. The third example is if you are foreigner and marry a Thai or foreign man/woman abroad and want to divorce here in Thailand, firstly you must submit the case to the Thai courts, even if you plan to or have already compromised as you will have to compromise in court so the proceedings can be checked. But in the case that the two parties are fighting, then you will have to show the Thai court if there are any clauses of divorce in the laws from the country where you were married and if the same clauses exist here in Thailand. For example here in Thailand if you leave your wedded partner you must wait three years before you can sue for a divorce but if you are the one that left then you must only wait one year, this is not the same in different countries. You have to do research, find these clauses and translate them before submitting them to
a Thai court. With matching laws you will have to follow the law with the longer period of time, using the above example; say in the US you have to wait 5 years if you are left and 2 years if you yourself leave before the other can sue for divorce then the Thai courts will uphold the US time period. OUR COMMENT: In the situations where you need to use conflicting laws you need a solicitor who will take care of your case and
who understands and has the knowledge to use it to your advantage. If not your case will be terminated easily and you will waste a lot of your time and money. If you have your own case or any questions regarding law in Thailand please feel free to write in to us and we will answer any questions or concerns in this column. PILC COFFEE MORNING Thirty eight ladies attended the September coffee morning which was held at La Baguette on Thappraya Road. It was nice seeing you all. Food included mini spinach and bacon quiches, fresh fruit, chicken samosas with plum sauce or sweet chilli sauce, mini smoked salmon on focaccia bread, almond croissants, mini blueberry cheese and, of course, tea and coffee.
The food was daintily displayed and the staff replenished it frequently. Sue did a great job with the various announcements as we were spread in two rooms. This is not the ideal set up for so many ladies but La Baguette is such a lovely venue, it was worth the slight inconvenience. Thanks to Louise for bringing her guests from her building. The door prize was won by Deidre.

BURAPA: BIKERS OF THE EAST This is an upcoming documentary film that is half way through production. It focuses heavily on all the biker groups that call Thailand home and the good that has come from them being a part of the community. The name BURAPA is both the name of a 1% Thai motorcycle club and the name of the most outlandish, secretive and intriguing festival in the world. Held in Pattaya, Thailand’s ‘Sin City’. It’s a story about the world’s most notorious Motorcycle Clubs (MCs) coming together in the name of peace and charity. These are clubs are at war with each other, in other parts of world, but as we find out things are different in Thailand. Most motorcycle documentaries don’t have access to current MC members, and they rely heavily on scare tactics & shock value to draw the viewer in. BURAPA: Bik-

to complete the film and need the publics help in doing so. They have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the final stages of
Kickstarter and you don’t need to sign up. As little as 100 Baht will help us complete the film. We have some great perks/rewards
production. You can find the documentary on Kickstarter if you search Burapa. It’s a very simple click through as a guest on

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:-
THESE FOODS CAN KEEP YOU AWAKE It’s no surprise that coffee can keep you up at night, but did you know these other foods can disrupt your sleep, too? ·What You Eat Affects How You Sleep: -If you could pick the right foods to help you get the best sleep possible, wouldn’t you? And if you knew which foods would hinder your restful slumber, wouldn’t you avoid them? Now’s your chance to learn which
foods to eat, and which to steer clear of for a good night’s sleep. ·Reach for Tryptophan-Rich Foods: -We’ve all heard of warm milk’s ability to send us off to dreamland. Do you know why it’s true? Dairy foods contain tryptophan, which is a sleep-promot-
20 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA
ing substance. Other good sources include nuts and seeds, bananas, honey, and eggs. · Indulge Your Craving for Carbs (A Little Bit): - Carbohydrate-rich foods help boost tryptophan in the blood. So a few good late-night snacks might include a bowl of cereal and milk, nuts and crackers, or bread and cheese. ·Have a Snack before Bedtime: - If you have insomnia, a little food in your stomach may help you sleep. But keep the snack small. A heavy meal will tax your digestive system, making you uncomfortable and unable to get
your ZZZs. ·Limit High-Fat Foods: -Research shows that people who often eat these foods gain weight and their sleep cycles tend to get disrupted. Why? A heavy meal activates digestion, which can lead to nighttime trips to the bathroom. ·Beware of Hidden Caffeine: -It’s no surprise that an evening cup of coffee might disrupt your sleep. Even moderate caffeine can cause sleep disturbances. But don’t forget about less obvious caffeine sources, like chocolate, cola, and tea. Even decaf coffee has a trace of it — but not enough
to be a problem. For better sleep, cut all caffeine from your diet 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. · Medications May Contain Caffeine: -Over-the-counter and prescription drugs that may have caffeine in them include pain relievers, weight loss pills, diuretics, and cold medicines. These and other medications may have as much or even more caffeine than a cup of coffee. Check the label of nonprescription drugs or the prescription drug information sheet to see if your medicine interferes with sleep or can cause insomnia. · Skip the Nightcap: -Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but you might not sleep well, waking up often, tossing and turning, and even having headaches, night sweats and nightmares. It can help to down a glass of water for each alcoholic drink, to dilute the alcohol’s effects. But for a good night’s sleep, it’s better to avoid alcohol 4 to 6 hours before bedtime.
· Beware of Heavy, Spicy Foods: -Lying down with a full belly can make you uncomfortable, since the digestive system slows down when you sleep. It can also lead to heartburn, as can spicy cuisine. If you indulge in a heavy meal, finish it at least 4 hours before bedtime. ·Minimize Protein at Bedtime: Protein is great during the day. But not so much when you’re ready for bed. It’s harder to digest and contains the amino acid tyrosine, which promotes brain activity. So skip the high-protein snack before bedtime and opt for a small piece of cheese and some sleep-friendly carbs, like crackers. ·Cut the Fluids by 8 P.M.: Staying hydrated throughout the day is great for your body, but cut it off before bed. You don’t want to have to keep getting up to go to the bathroom after you turn in. ·Don’t Smoke to Relax: -Even if it’s one of your favorite ways to unwind, smoking isn’t a good idea — night or day. Nicotine is a stimulant, with effects similar to caffeine. Avoid smoking before bedtime or if you wake up in the middle of the night. Keep trying to quit — it’s hard, but it’s worth it. The Trader is Pattaya’s premium monthly magazine for advertising targeted at both consumers and commercial interests. Many PEC members know ‘Pattaya Trader’ as the earliest and best loved of the expat magazines established over 18 years ago and still a free magazine with over a hundred distribution points around town. Gloria has welcomed the opportunity to come and talk to PEC to advise of the improvements made so far and her plans for the future. She also welcomes feedback and ideas from the club as it is precisely the views of Expats in Pattaya that she is keen to reflect. After all the magazine’s by line has been and will continue to be “The Pattaya Trader Connecting Pattaya”. About the Speaker Gloria Jones has lived in Pattaya for some years now, having come from the UK with her family where she was a full time menswear buyer. Prior to that career in London’s West End she had been a writer and editor for a local Fanzine and Music paper so welcomed the opportunity when it came along of writing articles for the ‘Pattaya Trader’. She has now been with the magazine over 3
years having been promoted to Associate Editor, and Customer Services Manager. From the beginning of this year she further increased her responsibilities to in her own words become “Head Cook and Bottle Washer” for the magazine because in her editing role there were various changes and improvements she longed to put in place. VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL
In Thailand, this festival is called thetsakan kin che, the Vegetarian Festival. It is celebrated throughout the entire country. It attracts crowds of spectators because of many of the unusual religious rituals that are performed. During a period of nine days, those who are participating in the festival dress all in white and ghin jeh, which has come to be translated as abstinence from eating meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products. Vendors and proprietors of restaurants indicate that jeh food is for sale at their establishments by putting a yellow flag out with the word (jeh) written on it in red. In Pattaya many restaurants and hotels have special menus with Vegetarian food and supermarkets sell various vegetarian food.
The Sawang Boriboon Foundation (also by foreigners called the Chinese Temple) in Naklua organize religious ceremonies and the streets around the center have many food stalls all selling a variety of vegetarian dishes. Pattaya People visited the area and show here photos from the festival.

TERMINAL 21 – WOW!
Many were scepitcal about the need for yet another shopping mall in Pattaya but the newly opened ‘Terminal 21’ is a fabulous addition to Pattaya’s attractions and from the reactions of the thousands of shoppers who frequented the first day of opening, it will be a huge success. Mostly mirroring the sister mall at Asok in Bangkok, the airport theme has been extended here in Pattaya to include two actual planes on the runway forecourt.
The total building area is 180,000 sqare metres with parking for 1,500 cars. Included is a 24 hour Foodland supermarket and a state of the art 7 screen SFX Cinema City. You an do a virtual world tour as you travel from floor to floor starting at Paris, then onwards to London, Tokyo, Venice and ending up in San Francisco, all without the need for passports or visas. Of course, you will need a credit card as the choice of designer goods
is vast. Barry Upton talked to an international array of first day shoppers for a Pattaya People TV feature and all expressed their pure joy at the happiest shopping mall they’d ever encountered. With something there for everyone, you would have to be a total killjoy not to enjoy what’s on offer. There is no doubt that ‘Terminal 21’ has the WOW factor and is a superb addition to Pattaya.
A VERY UNIQUE GUITAR
An SOS fundraising group of exarmed forces servicemen based here in Pattaya are raffling a ‘one off’ unique guitar that has been specially made to commemorate 100 years of the British Royal Air Force for the armed forces charity SSAFA . Designed and built here in Thailand by a non-guitar player, former British army veteran, Stephen Brown, the SOS team visited Classroom Music Lounge in Pattaya to ask Barry Upton to attempt to play it in a live situation for the very first time so they could

film it actually being played and hear how it sounded. Barry, indeed, not only played it for a couple of songs, but a whole set as he was so impressed with the comfort factor, sound and playability. The RAF style look of the instrument is complimented by the signature of world famous guitar super-
star Jeff Beck on the back, the combination of Jeff and Barry now making it a highly valuable commodity. (Barry Upton’s little joke there) Contact Arthur Campbell on Facebook page ‘SOS Club & Friends Thailand’ for raffle tickets or see him personally at Classroom Music Lounge every Thursday evening. BUNKER BOYS Monday, October 8th Bangpakong Riverside Golf and Country Club 1st Steve Mahoney (18) 37 points 2nd Michael Brett (14) 37 points 3rd Colin Lane (9) 36 points Near pins Arne Jorgensen, Takeshi Hakozaki, and Les Hall Despite a number of our regulars being on overseas jaunts or out injured a very good low season field of fourteen golfers made their way to Bangpakong for the first round of the week. The course as always was in very nice condition although the fairways were a bit damp in places, not enough to warrant the pick, clean, and place rule. The greens were probably the best of any on our playing roster and a joy on which to put. Today we played from the blue tees and with no run, the course played very long, in particular, the par threes all of which were high index holes were over two hundred yards and presented a real challenge. The weather was hot and humid with no wind and once again no rain. For the second day in a row, Steve Mahoney and Michael Brett were locked together on thirty-seven points with Steve taking first place again with a superior back nine. One stroke adrift Colin Lane took third place, also edging out Takeshi Hakozaki on countback. A number of players were locked on thirty-five points, one, in particular, Les Hall was very disappointed as he four-putted the last hole to miss out on a place The par threes were so difficult it seemed all one had to was be on the green to win, Arne Jorgensen, Les Hall, and Takeshi Hakozaki took one each. Wednesday, October 10th A & C, Khao Kheow Country Club 1st Michael Brett (14) 37 points
2nd Neil Carter (11) 35 points 3rd Geoff Parker (14) points Near pins Neil Carter, Michael Brett, and Stuart Brown X 2. We are now seeing the start of high season numbers with a group of fourteen participating in the midweek match at Khao Kheow. The course was very damp so pick, clean, and place rule was applied. We played from the yellow tees today, some of which had been moved forward to the whites making the course less than our normal six-thousand five hundred yards, but this had little effect as there was zero run on the fairways. Luck ran out for our last two groups who got a serious drenching on the closing holes, the second last group finished in torrential rain and wind whilst the last group abandoned play altogether. Without Steve Mahoney to worry about Michael Brett finally managed a first place with thirty-seven points, a curious round that included three wipes and three birdies. Neil Carter took second place with thirty-five points having lit up the course on the front nine with a series of pars and a birdie only to fade on the back. Geoff Parker who has been in the doldrums lately found some of his best form to take third place on thirty-four points. Near pins were taken by Neil Carter, Michael Brett, and two to Stuart Brown. The beautiful Singha black and silver grey golf bag and other goodies for a hole in one on A 3 remains unclaimed although it looked like it might go off today. Friday, October 12th Emerald 1st Jimmy Carr (15) 36 points 2nd Michael Brett (14) 36 points 3rd Neil Carter (11) 34 points Near pins Geoff Parker X 2 The Emerald course was in rela-

tively good condition despite recent heavy rain but once again the pick, clean, and place rule was applied. Conditions were hot and steamy until our first group reached the eighteenth green when the rain came down. The course was virtually empty so a very speedy round was had especially by our lead group of three who finished in just over three hours. The much improved Peter Allen had a round to forget today, his upcoming trip to Japan must have been on his mind. Overall scoring was acceptable. For the third time in his last four rounds Michael Brett lost first place on countback, this time to Jimmy Carr, both on thirty-six with Jimmy having a superior back nine. Neil Carter took third place with thirtyfour. The par threes were a real challenge with only Geoff Parker having any success managing to snag two. The Bunker Boys second annual golf challenge will be held on November 26th and 27th at the magnificent Kabinburi course. For an entry fee of five thousand five hundred baht participants receive two days of golf including green and caddie fee, two nights accommodation at the beautiful Serenity Hotel and Spa including two buffet breakfasts, and two buffet dinners, and a very stylish golf shirt free. First day of competition is a two ball better ball format, whilst the second day is a singles stableford format. Those wishing to enter a team should contact Neil Carter at the MClub or on 084 758 9907. Michael Brett had a good week with a win and two second places.
humid and once again we managed to avoid any rain. The standard of play was very variable from quite good to mediocre at best. Golf lessons are already paying dividends for Les Hall who took first place with a fine score of net seventy, we should now start to see his generous
what we got, our lead group were finished within three hours. The course was in good condition but the greens, recently cored and sanded were the worst we have encountered this year. Course maintenance is unavoidable and necessary but it’s going to take some time for these greens to re-
handicap come down quite a bit. Second place went to Neil Carter who is leading the way in the quest for golfer of the month, whilst Geoff Parker took third place. Near pins went to Les Hall, Geoff Parker and Paul Lanzetta.
cover, they were extremely slow and bumpy and made an already difficult course almost impossible on which to accumulate a decent score as was reflected in the results. One of our groups had the added challenge of dealing with a caddie who experienced an epileptic seizure. Despite the difficulty of the course scores were very close with four golfers locked together on thirtyone points and a further two on thirty points. First place went to Geoff Parker, second to Geoff Cox and Neil Carter took third. Geoff Parker also managed to snag a near pin with Michael Brett taking the other three.
Wednesday, October 17th. Treasure Hill 1st Geoff Parker (15) 31 points 2nd Geoff Cox (16) 31 points 3rd Neil Carter (12) 31 points Near Pins Geoff Parker, Michael Brett X 3. On arrival at Treasure Hill, we found an empty car park so we were confident of a quick round and as it turned out that’s exactly
Friday, October 19th Greenwood C & A 1st Ken Davidson (23) 41 points 2nd Neil Carter (12) 36 points 3rd Myke Thomas (19) 35 points Near pins Myke Thomas, Michael Brett X 2. Forty kilometers away from the rain of Pattaya the Greenwood course was bathe in sunshine, well at least no rain. The course was in beautiful condition with smooth fast greens making Wednesday’s horror a distant memory. There was little or no wind and at times the day was hot and humid. Reigning club champion Ken Davidson was having an average round until the seventh hole when he exploded into form with eleven points on the closing three holes giving him a twenty-one total on the front nine. He continued on his way with twenty on the back to take first place with forty-one points. Ken recently made a bold prediction that he intends to go back to back in the club championship. Confidence is an essential element of good sporting performance and if he continues in this vein of form who could doubt him?.. Neil Carter continues to perform well and took second place with thirty-six points, two seconds and a third place keeps Neil well in the race for golfer of the month. Myke Thomas in his last round before returning to Oz got into the winners circle for the first time with thirty-five points beating Michael Brett on count back. Myke also took a near pin while Michael Brett took two.
Monday, October 15th Crystal Bay 1st Les Hall (25) Net 70 2nd Neil Carter (12) Net 73 3rd Geoff Parker (15) Net 76 Near Pins Les Hall, Geoff Parker, Paul Lanzetta. Crystal Bay was the venue for today’s medal round. As we drove into the course via the back entrance the course looked extremely busy, some tees had two groups waiting so it looked like a slow days play was in store. Fortunately, this turned out not to be the case as we encountered no delays from start to finish. The condition of the course was ok as we have come to expect, not brilliant but generally reasonably good. The weather was hot and

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday, October 16, Pattana A/B – St AVD Tops the Field at Pattana! Middle of the month and we find ourselves off for our monthly encounter at one of the more challenging and scenic layouts in the area. There is plenty of water and bunkers to avoid while attacking 18 holes where the design differs adequately to create many different options to play each hole. And, at this point, still a reasonable low season green fee rate although the caddy and cart fees have gone up since our September visit, a possible sign of things to come as the transition to high season occurs. Assigned to play the “A” & “B” nines, the longest of the possible combinations, and told that carts were restricted to the cart paths due to the daily afternoon/ evening showers, it was once again “Lift, Clean, & Place” through the green, which has become the
norm rather than the exception. However as those who walked will attest to, many areas were extremely soggy making the walk a bit more tiring than normal and for those renting carts and not keeping the ball near the cart path some long walks to and from the ball. With those conditions, while the pace of moved steadily, it was slower than normal and not helped by several balls not found due to the soggy ground in relatively high rough. However there was no rain this day and the breeze did pick up a bit providing a little lowering of the perceived temperature and all the group finished and were gathered in the fine restaurant to enjoy the complementary glass of beer currently offered with every green fee. So with the scorecards collected and sorted, it was a relaxed and rested group that made their way back to Pattaya and BJ’s for the presentation. Due to the smaller group of play-
ers this day there were no technical or “Best 9‘s” awards so it was straight to the 5 best stableford scores. Atop the podium with an excellent 39 points stood Andre Van Dyk (c/h 17) , four points clear of Derek Brook (29) with his fine 35 point effort. Then it was into a count-back on 34 points for 3rd taken by John Davis (11) over Mashi Kaneta (15) and a further count-back on 33 points saw Don Carmody (30) edge out Dick Warberg and John Anderson for the fifth and final spot. Well played by all under the warm, humid and soggy conditions. Let’s hope the rainy season is about over and we can play it as it lies soon! What’s there left to say about Pattana? A first class operation all around. With the cheerful greeting on arrival, the green fee vouchers from PSC, and then the free drink coupon from the course on check-in, let’s get there and get out on the lush fairways.
Assigned to play “C” then “A” this day we were off under blue skies with scattered clouds. With the course wet under foot and possible rain showers in the forecast it was lift, clean and place through the green, as seems to be the norm of late. The course was in great condition, excellent grass under the ball in the fairways and greens running at a reasonable pace and true. With the course not crowded our groups played at a pace that suited them and, round over, all enjoyed the complimentary drink in the restaurant overlooking the course while the scorecards were sorted. With the small numbers it was direct to the presentation at the course this day. As has now seemingly become the routine at Pattana, and for the second time this week on top of that, the top step of the podium was claimed by Don Carmody (c/ h 28) with 36 points. Coming here once a month, this is Don’s third win in a row at this long and challenging course! Will have to see if he can continue his streak as the venue is already on the schedule for next month. Congratulations to Don. Joining Don on the podium were Bob Britton (13), 35 points and Graham Buckingham (23), 33 points. Well played everyone and with that it was into the cars and back to BJ’s for a couple hours of celebration or consolation. Friday, October 19, 2018, Mountain Shadow – St The Mountain Tops this Day! The last group visit to Mt. Shadow was way back in March just as the high season was winding down
and it was, as usual for this track, a tough outing with no one meeting their handicap. Why such a long time between visits one asks? Well, as said, it’s a tough track, and although the fairways and greens are average to above average and definitely playable, the unkempt condition of the area in general is definitely a drawback, what with such a large number of courses in the area to choose from. With the extremely high and dense growth at the entrance, between
ing along the dense undergrowth was good. The only other comment was with regard to caddies. It is that time of the year when the courses are filling out their caddy ranks after the low season and ramping up for the high season, an excellent chance of being assigned a new caddy. With a relatively small group this day how would the players deal with the challenges the course had to offer? Leading the way was Dick Warberg (c/h 23) with a 30 point effort followed by John Davis (11)
fairways and along the property boundaries it almost seems as if the course was just recently carved out of a dense jungle. Shots hit into these areas were lost balls no question. No need to even bother trying to look. Therefore the challenge of the day and the round was to keep it generally straight and in the short grass. The course was not crowded and the pace of play, considering some extra time look-
and Bob Britton (13) both with hard earned 27 points. With those results the answer has to be “Not Well” and we must say Mt. Shadow definitely won the day. GROWLING SWAN PATTAVIA – THURSDAY 11TH October 18. STABLEFORD. Bernie “Ma Horse McCart” plays the round of the day! Only one bus required, and a couple of cars ferrying all 13 golfers to this lovely course. The trip itself was uneventful other than dodging the craters on the road leading from the highway to the course proper. We had had plenty of rain leaving punters worried that carts would not be allowed on the course but despite a heavy ground, they were. Thus playing conditions were in our favor! Maybe, in hindsight LC&P (Lift, Clean & Place) could have been introduced! We played from the white tees and as per normal this course was is terrific condition, other than the Greens. Now these were in great condition (as always) but on the first nine, by god if you are not on with your putting it could
LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Peppernell’s Winning Adieu Friday, October 19, 2018 The Pattaya Links Golf Society ended the week with a welcome visit to Eastern Star to play a stableford competition on the course which was relatively unaffected by the seasonal downpours, except there was little run on the fairways and bunkers were soft. The greens however were very consistent and running at a fair pace. Overhead clouds were building but the threatening storm chose Pattaya as its venue instead leaving the residue to fall in Ban Chang for about fifteen minutes. Nineteen golfers were kept in a single flight and as always good scores were at a premium on the testing course. The upside was that the white tees were well forward on most of the tee boxes.

Bernie McCart had the score that nobody could beat, returning with 37 very good points, putting four in front of the field. Running in to second was Buffalo Bill Steinmann, with Brendan Devlin taking the last spot on the podium. A close encounter showed Len Jones taking fourth place with 33 points on countback from Tony Browne and Dave Arataki in third with 34. Mike Firkin again bullied the course with a bruising 35 points for second place, missing out on the closing holes with some unforced errors and bad luck. The winner was Wayne Peppernell with an excellent 36 points on his swansong round before returning to Australia. Tony Browne’s diligence on the Links golf simulator paid dividends as he took the best front nine award with 21 points whilst Masa Takano took the best back nine award for his 16 points, an indication of the toughness of the course. Near pins: Wayne Peppernell (3), Derek Phillips (6), Dave Stockman (13) and Maurice Roberts (17). Ah! the dreaded wig. Jeff Hunt

STABLEFORD. KHAO KHEOW G.C. – 18th October, 2018. “With nerves of STEELE Denis hits the right note” It was fifteen Golfers that had decided to head out for today’s game at Khao Kheow GC. With a Green Fee cost of B800 it does make it hard to resist this hard but good course. Weather was in our favor even, if anything a little on the warm side. Playing from the Yellow tees we attacked B & C. The course was in good nic and when you consider the rain we have had (in this region) it was on for a good day’s golf. only playable when they offer the low rates, other than that as of next month prices go thru the roof and we do not consider. It’s unfortunate that I have to report an incident that occurred on the 10th hole. Bill Steinmann had just completed 9 holes with a very good score of 20 points, what I am reporting now is a little hard to believe but very true. He was subsequently attacked by a band of ISIS raiders, Bill was held hostage and tortured for a long period of time. Word has it that they were threatening to take a limb from him. Anyways I guess they discovered that they had the wrong infidel and set Bill free. Well I am not sure how but for Buffalo to continue on was a remarkable feat, the pressure he must have been under would have been enormous. His 7 points on the last nine holes says it all! Our thoughts are with you Buffalo we do hope you get over this and soon! I think that maybe you should have a talk to Casa Rifkin as he dealt with him ordeal and got over it. He is still yet to venture out on the Golf Course but maybe the two of you together may help each other thru this!!!!!!! Well it was Denis Steele that set the crowd alight, returning to scale with a massive and one would say excellent 41 points. Well done Mr. Steele. has come back strongly with 35 points at Eastern Star on Friday, and today outdid himself with an excellent winning score of 40 points to top the “B” flight and claim the Green Jacket. Tony Browne has made it a point of never again wearing the “wig’ and put in another impressive round to take second place with 37 points, while Dave Arataki has been in good form and took third with 35 points. Mike Swaps Wig For Green Jacket Monday, October 22, 2018 There has been plenty of rain in Pattaya and surrounds of late, so it was with some trepidation that 28 adventurous golfers set out in three buses and some cars to tackle Pattavia Century Golf Course. This course has gained an admirable reputation of almost always presenting in excellent condition, and that’s the way we found it today. Recent rains have enabled the fairways to be well grassed and with some run. We played lift, clean and place, but there were few muddy spots to worry about. Good news, the marshall gave us a two tee start. The greens, having now been through the low season maintenance, have come back to their quick and tricky best. A week ago Mike Firkin had a round to forget, but since then he

Barny had been coming to Pattaya frequently since 2006 but sadly for the last 4 years he had suffered severe health problems

with many hospital visits. However, in between bouts of treatment he made his way to the Eastern Seaboard to see his friends and play golf, being looked after by the lovely Nui. After just 6 months from the formation of the Transplantees Divison within the Thailand Lawn Bowls Association and two residential training camps at Cocos Bowls Pattaya a squad was sent to the Australian Games from September 28th to October 7th. With competitors from Australia, Germany, New Zealand amongst others it was going to be tough but their hard work with Thai coach Sue was soon rewarded with the first bronze medal for the Ladies pairs of Suprapa and
Namthip. Then came the golds, with Suprapa gaining the Singles Ladies 50-59 range and Namthip taking the Bronze for a very comprehensive round up in their division. Then came gold to Wassapol in the mens singles and Arunee in the ladies singles both 19-29 range. In the ladies singles 40-49 range it was a clean sweep with Jutaporn taking gold and Thapanee the silver. ‘STEPS’ & 5,6,7,8 – THE TRUE STORY
This November sees the 21st anniversary of the first single release by international hit pop band ‘STEPS’. It’s no secret that the concept and development was mostly mine and over the last 21 years, people have either congratulated me or hated me on a 50/50 split. I realize they are not
to everyone’s musical taste but success speaks for itself. However, nothing is easy in the entertainment buisiness and here follows the cut down true story of how it all started. In 1996, I remembered how ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ by my former band ‘Brotherhood Of Man’ had a dance which was copied by thousands of fans and linked it all to my new ‘Line Dancing’ pop band idea so I set about trying to write what could be a definitive track and as usual with my style of writing, looked for a great title. Then I had a ‘eureka’ moment whilst playing at a songwriters showcase. It popped into my head how line dances, or in fact dances in general, were always counted in with 5,6,7,8 instead of 1,2,3,4, as most musicians would count in each other. Just had to write the rest of the song now, but I was already smelling a ‘hit’. Together with line dancing expert Steve Crosby, we placed an ad in ‘Stage’, an entertainment industry
magazine for some good looking young singer/dancers to come and audition for a new pop group. We had decided on a working name of ‘STEPS’ as it went with the line dancing idea. To my surprise, the audition room was packed full of auditionees and Steves’ wife, ‘Rodeo Ruth’, set about teaching them the basic steps to the dance we’d come up with. I videoed the candidates, looking for some star quality on the screen. It was like a forerunner of TVs’ ‘X Factor’ (I wonder where that idea came from? Mmm Simon?). Over the next couple of days, after reviewing the videos, we settled on our 3 girls and 2 boys, this male/female split arrived at because more girls line danced than boys. Also I wanted to get away from the ‘Abba’/’Bucks Fizz’/ ‘Brotherhood of Man’ line up of 2 boys and 2 girls. We were initially turned down by many labels, including ‘Simon Cowell’ at ‘BMG’, the biggest response from major labels being the song and act were too ‘cheesy’ and that the line dancing thing was just a fad that would soon pass. Plus all the pop bands around at that time were either all female, such as the ‘Spice Girls’
or boy bands such as ‘Boyzone’. Not disheartened, we kept going and Simon Cowell admitted that our song ‘5,6,7,8’, could be a hit. So offered us a one single deal for ‘5,6,7,8’. His stipulation though was that we should enter it into the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’. I immediately didn’t like that idea so turned down Simon’s offer, preferring to wait for the minimum three singles and album deal we were seeking. Just as I was discussing with Steve Crosby

Waterman’ suddenly came on the scene. I’d brushed shoulders a few times with Pete so he knew of me and my commercial credentials. However I was convinced that he, a lover of soul and R&B, would absolutely hate ‘5,6,7,8’ with its’ twangy Country guitar and line dancing association. How wrong could I be? I cowered at the back of the studio waiting for another big rejection when halfway through the second chorus he turned to us all and put his thumbs up. ‘F***ing Hit’ he triumphantly proclaimed and provided an album and three singles deal. I was later to find out that this moment saved his deal and relationship with ‘Jive Records’ which was teetering on failure. There were seven names on the contract documents with ‘STEPS’ members being Lee, H, Claire, Faye, Lisa plus myself and Steve Crosby as the sixth and seventh non performing participants and writers. At the start of November, the track was released and went straight into in the top 20. It subsequently hovered between 11 and 20 for the next 16 weeks becoming the biggest selling record of the 90s not to make the top 10. It soared to no. 1 in Australia (never saw that coming) and was featured on a plethora of Compliation CDs internationally including some big sellers. The first few months of 1998 saw my song still hovering in the charts between eleven and twenty but never actually entering the top ten. The track went on to be included in just about every party compilation globally which helped the royalties pile up considerably. 21 years later, the track, 5,6,7,8, is now a party classic and still receives a lot of play worldwide. After numerous hits and concert tours, STEPS are now one of the
