SUGGESTIONS COZY RESTAURANT This month we are delighted to describe a very pleasant dining experience at Suggestions Cosy
restaurant on the dark side, or west side now that there are street lights. Suggestions is located in a stand alone building in the dark side. It has a very swiss look and feel even though it is supposed to be “Belgian”. While we weren’t drinking beer to tonight, I could not help but notice a nice selection of Belgian white beers here. Upon entering my eye was immediately drawn to the daily specials board. I caught Hokkaido scallops with choice of three sauces and

I knew I had come to the right place. Quality scallops are a rare find in Pattaya. Our party of three was greeted by the very friendly owner Edwin. You realize in the first minute this is a man who cares about sourcing quality food and preparing it properly. Couldn’t help but notice there was CANADIAN cold

To provide a proper plating background for contrast the scallops were served on a gray slate plate. Beautiful. The scallops were moist and tender and were complimented nicely with truffle
were served on fresh steamed spinach as it should be. Next the main courses arrived. The aforementioned great but mystery vegan dish, and hearty medium rare Australian beef steak and my rare tuna steak. At this point one cannot help but notice the portions are VERY large for a fine dining continen-
water lobster as well as monk fish available this month. So we decided to first start with appetizers. Our group includes a vegan (Nils) and two normal eaters. So for appetizers we choose a delightful asparagus soup, mussels, and of course I had the Hokkaido scallops with truffle sauce. For main courses we had a beef steak, my rare tuna steak and a vegan dish that I was told was GREAT. As you can see
source and fried onions. It was actually quite a large appetizer with 3 very meaty scallops included. I thought to myself I should stop eating here. This time I spent too much time savoring my appetizer but couldn’t help but notice so were the other guests. It is a small point but important to me, the seafood
tal style restaurant. As proof of the size of the portions none of us felt we could eat a full dessert as we agreed to share and order of profiteroles with what I deemed to be a very swiss chocolate sauce. More than enough split three ways! Because Suggestions had many items that I find very difficult to
find in Pattaya I am sure to return again. Of course the fact that the prices are very reasonable for fine dining helps that decision right along. Highly recommended.

4 SISTERS SHAKING UP PATTAYA Many factors resulted in a not so good year for Pattaya businesses in 2018. The media businesses being in the middle of our community suffered a lot from the bad trends. The major share holder of the mother company of Pattaya People Media Group Mr. Niels Colov took owner the leadership of the company on 1. January 2018 when the previous management team nearly had brought it to bankruptcy. Now after 12 month of hard work and with the valuable support of long term faithful customers the financial situation in the company is now stable and positive, and we are ready to make a big push forward with the introduction of more internet based business in 2019. On new year we will make the official launch of “Pattaya People Privilege Card”, many people have already registered as “members” of PPPC for free and for an extended period the free registration will continue, also many clubs and organizations in Pattaya will be invited to regis-
ter for free and benefit from the big discounts, in most cases 50%, on many attractions in and around Pattaya, however when the extended period is over it will cost 1,000 baht to register as members of PPPC so better get it done right now. As a member of PPPC you will not only get the big discounts but also receive VIP invitations to parties and functions, also special offers from our advertisers will be given without any strings attached to the PPPC mem-
bers. The “4 Sisters” will of course be the backbone in our shake up of the media market in Pattaya. We will introduce road shows, events, join in international events and our Pattaya People FREE APP has been redesigned to make more distribution of the content of our “4 Sisters” to the millions around the world on their smart phones. We will be able to provide a low cost or actually free extra exposure to our existing advertising customers
and as such help them expand their business. The future is on-line based business so during the new year we will start various new ventures all supported by the strong promotion value of our cross media platforms. We ask the business community to join us going into the 2019 with a positive mind and strive towards success together with us. Happy New Year 2019 may all have a blessed life with good health, happiness and prosperity.

30th ANNIVERSARY In 1984 the first four students were admitted into the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities. The school was founded by the late Father Ray Brennan after seeing many disabled beggars on the street of Pattaya. He wanted to do more than just hand out money and food, so he opened the school with the aim of giving young adults living with a disability the chance to learn a trade so that they could go on and ‘earn their own rice’. Today the school has been upgraded to college status, and today celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of registration, and also recognition, by the Ministry of Education.
Students have competed against students from top universities in computer and electronics competitions, and won. Many are working is positions where they are promoting the rights of those living with disabilities. Next time you go shopping at one of Pattaya’s many department stores and supermarkets and see a person with a disability working it is highly likely they are graduates from the school. In recent years the school has reached out to young people living in the deep south of the kingdom, offering help to those injured and living with a disability in the war torn provinces, offering them
ementary and Pre-Education courses. The college will continue to educate and empower people with disabilities. Empower them to have
Since opening more than three decades ago the school has changed with the times. For many years the majority of the students had physically disabilities, very few mental disabilities were seen. Today almost half the current students are living with a mental disability, such as brain damage, and there are also students with multidisabilities, coping with a physical as well as a mental disability. Over the years the school has achieved so much to be proud of. Almost three thousand five hundred students have enrolled, and those who have graduated have gone on to live independent lives and ‘earn their own rice’.

Earlier this year the Ministry of Education upgraded the school to college status. SUCCESSFUL SOS RICE
This project has been going on ever since a small group of foreigners for more than 20 years ago met with the legendary Father Raymond Brennan, a Catholic priest who started the Pattaya
Orphanage and many other institutions for under privileged people. The foreigners wanted to help the priest and asked him what he needed the most. Father Ray answered “My children need
rice”. Later the Thai community got involved in the project and it mushroomed into what it is today. During the month of December every year collection points are set up around Pattaya at many retail store like 7-11, Tops Marked, Big C, Big C Extra, Foodland, Friendship Supermarked, Villa Marked, Central Festival Shopping Mall, Makro, Tesco Lotus, Central Marina and other places. People can buy rice and present it to the collection points. The Father Ray Foundation is taking care of 850 orphans and people with disabilities. In
one year the foundation cooks 75 tons of rice. On Tuesday 27. November a press conference took place at the foun-
dation with VIP guests attending nd each explaining the significance of this worthwhile project that this year yielded more than3 tons of rice and one million baht in cash as well as a lot of other food products.

YOUR PASSPORT
Over the years I have seen many clients who approach me about a case wherein the police have taken and are withholding their passport. One such case was with a US man who had been in a relationship with a local girl who was abusive and controlling; whenever the US
man wanted to leave her she would hurt herself in some way and then put the blame on him. This happened a few times with her later admitting that she lied to the man and her family, but the latest incident involved her going to the police. At the police station
ISSUE 609 ď Ź JANUARY 2019
she claimed that the US man had physically abused and threatened to kill her during an argument. After hearing this, the police acted and arrested the man taking him to the police station for questioning. During this process the US man’s passport was confiscated
until the case was resolved as a guarantee that he would not run away from the case. What the US man did not know was that the police have no legal right to take his passport from him, a passport is the property of its respective issuing country and when abroad it is taken care of by the embassy and the only authority high enough to order its confiscation is the Thai Provincial Court. Even when a passport is confiscated in court normally you will be able to reclaim it on bail, for example; if you are in the middle of a case and you need to leave the country the court will allow you to bail out your passport for a fee which is returned when you come back to the Kingdom. With regards to the US man, before his case goes to court and the judge orders him to turn in his passport he has every right to keep his passport in his possession, as such after contacting the embassy we were able to retrieve it from the police and return it to him fairly
quickly. OUR COMMENT: When you are in a foreign country and are not sure of its laws, it is worth a little time to do some research or look for some advice. Do what you can to protect yourself by getting some legal advice or contacting your embassy, your status as a foreigner does not mean you are treated unfairly. Your passport is your ticket around the world and it is an important document that you must have on you at all times when trav-
elling abroad, do not hand it over to anyone who does not have the right to keep it. If you are unsure of anything, wait and request legal aide who then should be able to guide you through the proper process. If you have any questions or inquiries please feel free to contact us at any time. To contact the Lawyer please call: 08-9911-1199 or email: info@pattayapeople.com

ELECTION WINNER It was in early 1948 that the first Redemptorist priests arrived into Thailand. Four priests had set sail from the United States several weeks earlier and their mission upon reaching the Kingdom of Thailand was to preach the word of God. Today there are more than fifty Redemptorist priests and broth-
ers, mostly Thai, but there are a few remaining Americans, notably Father Joe Meier, who has spent over fifty years working in the slums of Bangkok and Father Mike Shea, who has also spent more than five decades in the north of the kingdom. At their recent annual meeting of clergy members in Bangkok, Fa-
ther Michael Picharn Jaiseri C.Ss.R. was elected to the position of Provincial of the Redemptorists of Thailand. Father Michael will be known to many in Pattaya as the Vice President of the Father Ray Foundation. He is also President of the Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities and a Past
President of the Rotary Club of Pattaya City. Father Michael is also the Chairman of the annual Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the SOS Rice Appeal that takes place each year in early December. Father Michael has been elected to lead the congregation for the next four years, which means that the eight years he has spent here in Pattaya will soon come to an end. In January he will say his farewells and relocate to Bangkok, though he is sure to have a lot of happy memories from his many years here in Pattaya.

nuts can pile on the pounds. Day 10: Add Flaxseed
REVERSE HEART DISEASE IN 24 DAYS Make one simple change each day to slash your heart disease risk by 60% You know that a bad diet and too little exercise can hurt your ticker. But there are lots of sneaky sources of heart disease that you may not be aware of. Here are some you need to know about, and heart-smart steps to help you keep healthy.
Day 4: Rough Up Your Diet
Day 1: Drink Green Tea the tea into a container, add ice if you like, and sip throughout the day. Day 2: (Re) Calculate Your Fat Budget
20% should be your max. Get lots of monounsaturated and omega3 fats. Avoid saturated and trans fats. Go easy on omega-6 fats such as corn oil. Day 3: Take the Italian Cure
Studies show that the more fiber you eat, the less likely you are to have a heart attack. Load up on whole grain breads and cereals that contain whole wheat, wheat bran, and oats. Toss beans into casseroles, soups, and salads. Aim for at least 25-35 g of fiber a day
Orange juice contains folic acid that helps lower your levels of homocysteine, a heart attack risk factor. Grape juice is loaded with flavonoids and resveratrol, both potent antioxidants that may discourage red blood cells from clumping together and forming an artery-blocking clot. Have two glasses daily—one at breakfast and one at lunch. Day 7: Linger in the Produce Aisle
Flaxseed is one of the most potent sources of hearthealthy omega-3 fats. Studies indicate that adding flaxseed to your diet can reduce the development of heart disease by 46 percent while helping keep red blood cells from clumping together and forming clots that can block arteries. Sprinkle 2 Tbs flaxseed a day on your cereal or salad. Buy it preground, and keep it refrigerated. Day 11: Have a Drink
Day 5: Eat Fish Tonight
Green tea contains several powerful antioxidants that reduce cholesterol and may even lower blood pressure. To make a day’s supply, bring 20 oz water to a boil, drop in three decaffeinated green tea bags, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags, and refrigerate the tea. When cool, pour
Eat at least nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Emphasize cruciferous vegetables such as kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage, which are a gold mine of antioxidants and other heart-saving phytochemicals. (And grab apples! New research shows one a day keeps the heart doc away.)
Don’t let fat exceed 25% of your calories. If you already have heart disease, eat even less—15 to In the world of fat, olives rule. Canola oil is good, but olive oil may be better. Substitute olive oil for butter or margarine at the table, drizzle it on salads, and use it to replace vegetable oils in baking wherever possible. Buy only cold-pressed, extra virgin oil; it retains more of the olive’s hearthealthy antioxidants than other forms.
Meat’s saturated fat will clog your arteries. On the other hand, fatty fish such as salmon and anchovies are loaded with the omega3 fatty acids that will help your heart maintain a steady rhythm. Having even one fish serving a week could reduce your risk of death from a heart attack by 52%
Day 8: Go Nuts!
Research overwhelmingly shows that 1 to 3 oz of alcohol a day significantly reduce your risk of a heart attack. Unless you have a problem with alcohol or high blood pressure, you can safely have one alcoholic drink a day. (Don’t miss: 6 Sneaky Signs You Drink Too Much.) Day 12: Buy Soy
Studies have found that those who eat more than 5 oz of nuts a week are one-third less likely to have either heart disease or a heart attack. Just don’t overdo it—

Studies show that consuming soy protein helps reduce cholesterol. Experiment with soy burgers, soy cheese, soy ice cream, soy milk, and even soy lunchmeat. Careful with soy supplements, though. Research shows that taken alone, they don’t work nearly as well as when you consume whole soybeans or soy products.
tency supplement that contains a minimum of 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid, 500 mg of vitamin C, and no more than 50 mg of vitamin B6.
200 to 400 IU a day. Day 22: Grab Garlic
Day 21: Give Free Radicals a Partner
Day 13 Move! person you are, make sure you listen—and get real. Day 16: Practice Mindfulness
Studies show that exercise reduces the risk of a heart attack by up to 50%—more than the best cholesterol-lowering drug. And it doesn’t take much: just a few hours a week, according to experts. Pick an easy exercise such as walking, and begin to integrate two or three 15minute workout intervals into your day. Once your body is used to this routine, work toward the optimal amount: 45 minutes, four or five times a week. Day 14: Experiment
Day 19: Manage Your Anger
Practicing a form of meditation in which you focus awareness on the present moment and relax can reduce the effects of daily stressors. When stressful moments occur, they can be countered by simply closing your eyes and quietly focusing on your breathing for 5 to 10 minutes. (Find the best kind of meditation for your personality.) Day 17: Build a Strong Spiritual Life
The best exercise is one that you’ll continue to do. So every day, in addition to your regular workout, try something new just for fun—hitting a tennis ball against the house, shooting hoops with your kids, or dancing to a golden oldie on the radio. If you find something that you like, incorporate it into your daily workout. Day 15: Be Yourself One of the biggest causes of stress is trying to live in a way that is not consistent with who you are. Ask yourself: Am I doing what I want to do? Am I getting my needs met? Every day, run a reality check on what you’ve done. When it says that your actions aren’t true to the kind of
Strong connections to family, friends, community, and God reduce anxiety and fight depression—two factors that increase your risk of a heart attack. So first thing in the morning, make a lunch date with a good friend, tell your family that everyone needs to sit down for dinner tonight, or plan to visit your place of worship. Resolve to do these things every day.
Free radicals are maverick electrons that have been torn away from their normal molecular partners. Unfortunately, as they go zinging through your body looking for new mates, they tend to tear up your cells. But vitamin E seems to offer temporary companionship, significantly reducing the damage to your heart. Take
Just one clove a day—or 300 mg, three times daily—reduces the risk of a heart attack at least three ways: It discourages red blood cells from sticking together and blocking your arteries, it reduces arterial damage, and it discourages cholesterol from lining those arteries and making them so narrow that blockages are likely. Day 23: Increase Your Selenium
Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that reduces the tendency of the red blood cells to form life-threatening clots. It also balances the ratio between “good” and “bad” cholesterol in a way that reduces your chances of a heart attack. Take 100 mcg a day—but no more than 200 to avoid toxic effects. Day 24: Top It Off With an Aspirin Studies show that a single 81-mg “baby” aspirin a day reduces the risk of a heart attack by 30 to 50%. So unless you have stomach problems or you’re allergic to aspirin, take one tablet a day with food. If your stomach feels a bit queasy, talk to your doctor about whether enteric-coated aspirin is an option. For More information Visit:Tuesday & Wednesaday 09301730 G Building Seven Seas Condo & Resort Chaiyapruk Road Soi 3- Pattaya Monday/ Thrusday/Friday/Saturday 0900-1800 226/5, Sukhumvit Soi 22, Bangkok
Losing your temper can double your risk of a heart attack within the next 2 hours! If you lose yours, Duke psychiatrist Redford Williams, MD, suggests dousing it by asking: • Is what’s upsetting me really important? • Is what I’m thinking and feeling appropriate? • Is the situation modifiable? • Is taking action worth it? Day 20: Add Supplements
Studies indicate that those with regular spiritual practices who meet with a faith community—attending church or temple, for example—live longer, better, and are far less likely to have a heart attack. Get more involved in your religion, or develop your own traditions. Either way, sit down every day for 20 minutes, close your eyes, and focus on a particular word or phrase that you associate with something greater than yourself. Day 18: Get More People in Your Life

Take a high-potency vitamin supplement with antioxidants. Research has found that those who regularly use multivitamins may reduce their risk of heart disease by 24%. Pick out a high-po-

HUAWEI CALLS ON US, OTHERS TO SHOW PROOF OF SECURITY RISK by Joe McDonald The chairman of Huawei challenged the United States and other governments to provide evidence for claims the Chinese tech giant is a security risk as the company launched a public relations effort to defuse fears that threaten its role in next-generation communications. Talking to reporters who were invited to Huawei Technologies Ltd.’s headquarters, Ken Hu complained accusations against the biggest global maker of network gear stem from “ideology and geopolitics.” He warned excluding Huawei from fifth-generation networks in Australia and other markets would hurt consumers by raising prices and slowing innovation. Australia and New Zealand have barred Huawei in 5G networks on security grounds. They joined the United States and Taiwan, which have broader curbs on Huawei. Japan’s cybersecurity agency says suppliers including Huawei that are deemed high-risk will be excluded from government purchases. The latest curbs have had little impact on Huawei, which is the biggest global maker of network gear and a leader in 5G development. But the normally press-shy company’s decision to hold Tuesday’s event appeared to reflect concern that if restrictions spread, they might hurt Huawei’s access to a 5G market industry analysts say could be worth $20 billion a year by 2022. Hu, who appears at industry events but rarely gives interviews, talked for two hours and 20 minutes with American, European and Asian reporters. “If you have proof or evidence, it should be made known,” said Hu. “Maybe not to Huawei and maybe not to the public, but to telecom operators, because they are the ones that buy Huawei.”
Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former military engineer, rejects accusations it is controlled by the ruling Communist Party or designs equipment to facilitate eavesdropping. But foreign officials cite a Chinese law that requires companies to cooperate with intelligence agencies and

The emergence of 5G has heightened those fears. The technology is meant to support a vast expansion of telecoms networks to connect self-driving cars, factory robots, medical devices and power plants. That has prompted governments increasingly to view telecoms networks as strategic national assets. “There has never been any evidence that our equipment poses a security threat,” said Hu. He added later, “We have never accepted requests from any government to damage the networks or business of any of our customers.” Huawei is China’s first global tech

sensitivity. Hu noted a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Dec. 10 that no law requires companies to modify equipment to permit secret access. “We haven’t received any request to provide improper information,” he said. “In the future, we will also act in strict accordance with the law in dealing with similar situations.” The lack of public evidence has prompted some industry analysts to suggest the accusations might be an excuse to shield U.S. or European competitors against a successful Chinese challenger. Asked about that, Hu said reducing competition would hamper innovation and raise costs for consumers.
terday, I was on a plane” returning from Europe. Another Chinese company, ZTE Corp., was nearly forced out of business this year after it was blocked from buying U.S. technology over its exports to Iran and North Korea. Trump restored access after ZTE paid a $1 billion fine, replaced its executives and hired U.S.-selected compliance managers. Asked whether Huawei would be hurt if it faced similar curbs, Hu said he couldn’t talk about something that hadn’t happened. But he said the company has a global network of 13,000 suppliers and a “diversified supply strategy” that allowed it cope with Japan’s 2011 tsunami and other disruptions. Hu promised repeatedly to expand efforts to respond to “legitimate concerns” from regulators, telecom carriers or the public. Huawei has opened centers in Britain, Germany and Canada for governments to test its equipment and software. Its newest “security transparency center” is due to open in Belgium in the first quarter of 2019. Tuesday’s event for reporters included tours of two research-anddevelopment laboratories at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, which abuts Hong Kong, and a cybersecurity testing center at a newly built campus in Dongguan, an hour’s drive to the west. The company said it was the first time reporters had been allowed to see those facilities. The cybersecurity lab has facilities used by customers including Spain’s Telefonica to carry out their own tests on Huawei equipment and software, according to its director, Martin Wang. “We are open to any discussion with customers about how we can improve cybersecurity,” said the company’s director of cybersecurity and privacy, Sean Yang.

lion this year. The United States and other critics should disclose evidence against Huawei to make clear why they are pursuing a conflict that could have “massive repercussions” if Beijing retaliates, said Scott Kennedy, a Chinese politics specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. U.S.-Chinese relations already are strained over President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on billions of dollars of Chinese imports in a fight over complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology. “It’s long past time for those worried about Huawei to air their evidence publicly, not to satisfy China but as an obligation to the Ameri-
Hu cited what he said was a forecast by a research firm, Frontier Economics, that the cost of installing 5G wireless base stations in Australia would be 15 to 40 percent higher without competition from Huawei. “You can’t make yourself more excellent by blocking competitors from the playing field,” he said. Despite “efforts to use politics to interfere with industry growth,” Huawei has signed contracts to supply 5G equipment to 25 telecom carriers according to Hu. He said more than 10,000 5G base stations have been shipped. “We are proud to say that our customers continue to trust us,” he said. Huawei suffered another setback when its chief financial officer was arrested Dec. 1 in Canada in connection with U.S. accusations the company violated restrictions on sales of American technology to Iran. Hu said he couldn’t discuss the Iran accusations because the executive, Meng Wanzhou, is in the midst of court proceedings in Vancouver. Meng, the daughter of Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, faces possible U.S. charges of lying to a bank to conceal Huawei’s dealings with Iran. However, Hu said Huawei is “very confident in our trade compliance management.” Echoing earlier company statements, he expressed “confidence in the fairness and independence” of courts involved in Meng’s case. Asked whether Meng’s arrest made Huawei executives reluctant to leave China, Hu laughed and said, “There is no impact on our travel plans. At this time yes-

ISE HOST’S CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCHES A huge thanks to Jez Lees and Kelley Potisit from the International School of the Eastern Seaboard for an amazing day of footy, food and fun. Everything was organised and paid for including buses and food and there were plenty of helpers so that we can have a wonderful time. The score was ISE 1 and Hand to Hand 2, only winning the second game by a penalty shoot out. The scores didn’t really matter to these kids, they had such a great time. The younger teams played 10 minute rounds where they play-
ers were switched around which kept the games interesting and the children focused. This was the first ‘real’ matches that the hand to hand children had ever played and they enjoyed it immensely. After the matches were finished a lunch of pizza, fruit and water was provided so we could rest and regain our energy so that we could play on the famous ISE water slide. The children had fun sliding down together which often resulted in an interesting tangle of arms and legs at the bottom.

ISSUE 609 JANUARY 2019
BUNKER BOYS Monday, December 10th Crystal Bay 1st Tony Scambler (16) 40 points 2nd Daryl Vernon (24) 38 points 3rd Neil Carter (11) 36 points 4th Gordon Melia (20) 36 points Near pins Kob Glover, Michael Brett, Neil Carter X 2. For some reason, we had a lower than expected turnout of fifteen for today’s round at Crystal Bay, some of our locals just didn’t play, some are overseas, and tourist numbers in Pattaya are lower than in previous years. Possibly
Brexit plus an all-time low exchange rate may also have an influence. The course was surprisingly damp in parts, overnight rain may have been much heavier in the area than in Pattaya. The day was overcast with temperatures much more benign than in recent days. Despite another group checking in just before us, there was no delay and pace of play was fine. Tony Scambler produced the round of the day chipping in on the last for a birdie to record a score of forty points. Even on this
course which is generally regarded as one of the easier, this was a very good score. Second place went to Daryl Vernon on thirty-eight points, Daryl is appearing in the winners circle regularly so we may soon see a cut in his handicap. Third place with thirty-six points went to Neil Carter beating Gordon Melia on countback. Kob Glover and Michael Brett had near pins while Neil Carter took two, Neil now has a substantial lead in the number of near pins for the year. Life is full of surprises and today was no exception, back at the M Club after his fine win Tony Scambler rang the bell, could that be a first. Even more surprising John Hughes arrived at the club too late to avail of a free beverage, who would have thought?. Wednesday, December 12th Eastern Star 1st Neil Carter (11) 38 points 2nd Tony Robbins (18) 31 points 3rd Michael Brett (13) 30 points Near pins Michael Brett, & Neil Carter X 2. Since our last visit a month ago the course has deteriorated markedly, just about all tee boxes were in shabby condition, greens which
had recently been sanded unevenly were very variable in speed and made putting a bit of a lottery. Also, the new cart paths which have been completed for some time have yet to have the ground beside them restored. Another gripe for almost all golfers was the caddies who seemed disinterested and very slow. All in all, it was disappointing to see the course slide backward like this and with the higher than most green fees it no longer represents value for money. Our numbers were down again today, the lowest high season number we have seen with only eleven showing up to play. This was made worse by the early retirement of Keith Hemmings who succumb to a back strain and retired after three holes. Scores were very disappointing with only Neil Carter putting up a fight to take first place with a solid thirtyeight points. Seven points adrift Tony Robbins took second place while abysmal putting confined Michael Brett to thirty points in what otherwise could have been a decent score. Near pins went to Michael Brett and two to Neil Carter.
Friday, December 14th Greenwood A & C 1st Les Cobban (8) 35 points 2nd Michael Brett (13) 34 points 3rd Neil Griffin (25) 33 points 4th Keith Hemmings (22) 32 points Near pins Peter Allen, Neil Carter, and Michael Brett Following Wednesday’s round of low scores, there was an expectation of better today but sadly the improvement was only marginal. Given that it normally takes in the area of forty points to win at Greenwood and the course was in good condition it was a surprise to see such low scores take the winners circle. The wind did blow all day which may have adversely affected some but nevertheless one would expect higher scores. One noteworthy factor was the caddies who were of a much higher standard today. A field of eighteen was in attendance. First place went to Les Cobban with a score of thirty-five off a low handicap of eight, second went to Michael Brett on thirty-four. For much of his round Neil Griffin was on fire and looked like he would sweep all before him only to fade badly on the back nine, neverthe-

GROWLING SWAN STABLEFORD. TREASURE HILL G.C. – 17th December, 2018. “The Viper, (Stapo) makes it 2 from 2.” We set out with arted with 19 on the sheet, but ended up setting sail with 15 golfers! Well we were off to Play Treasure Hill and of course take on The Infamous Crocodile Rock. What a great course and one would have to say what a great price. This is one of the courses that I think is starting to realize that pricing is important to us and High Season is fictitious to those that live here. Treasure Hill we applaud you! The Course was in fantastic condition, as you would expect nothing other than that from this venue. Fairways were in great shape the greens played true, bunkers clean and raked and the rough well it was the rough! We went from the Yellow tees and
with the weather being on our side we were set for a good day out. (not counting ability) We would play One Flight with four placing’s, also all novelties were up for grabs! It was Steve Younger who shone at today’s event, back from Open Heart Surgery, A Hip and Knee replacement and one must not forget his shoulder reconstruction. He is now registered as Our Six Million Baht Man. All jokes aside Steve bought home the bacon with 40 points five clear of his next opponent. Second to greet the judges was Rod Weekes coming back to us in fine form. Third today and hitting a bit of a purple patch was Lorraine Percy who took that position on the podium from John Anderson (his fav course and caddy) via the count system. WINNERS from TREASURE HILL. 1st Steve Younger (14) 40 pts. 2nd Rod Weekes (18) 35 pts. 3rd Lorraine Percy (33) 34 pts.

In the photo we have from L to R; Rod Weekes, today’s winner Steve Younger and John Edwards. You may notice that 2 out of 3 are looking at the camera, the third person is checking out some eye candy! Good on you Rod! Back at the Swan we welcomed back Jack Penny, Colm Mullen and Rudy Regenass. We then wished Lorraine Percy all the best as she is having a few weeks off to fix her eye sight. Cookie watch yourself! Alex set D-For from his chain to collect for the needy of Pattaya. We give thanks to those who choose to give. The Golfers and Punters from The Growling Swan are thanked for the generous efforts! For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. CAFE KRONBORG Ty Anderson and Peter Hammond with Dave Richardson 13th December 2018 Plutaluang – Yellow Tees The Cafe Kronborg golfers played their favourite nines – North and West – and although more difficult than East and West the ex-
cellent greens always justify this choice. No monkeys- without golf clubs – today, except for one on the second tee who swiftly turned his back on us and went into the trees – he had probably seen enough after our three putting on the sloping first green. Pity he did not re-
less, he took third place with thirty-three leaving Keith Hemmings to bring up the rear with thirty-two. Near pins went to Neil Carter, as usual, ( five for the week). Peter Allen and Michael Brett. As is usually the case Peter Allen got his near pin using the driver from the tee. A shot that ran along the ground most of the way up the fairway onto the green and obligingly stopped near the pin was enough for Michael Brett to get his near pin, but the shot of the day went to Neil Griffin. On the parr five C 4, Neil hit his shot to the green into the creek in front of the green, the ball hit the wall on the green side of the creek and rebounded all the way back to land at his feet. Today we bade farewell to Gordon Melia who is returning to the UK for the festive season before returning again in January. Also on a similar journey was Keith Hemmings. We were pleased to welcome back Gerry Cooney after a long absence in the UK for shoulder surgery, Gerry is now doing physiotherapy and expects to be back on the golf course in about a month.

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Davies On Song at Burapha The Pattaya Links Golf Society played its 150th competition round of the year at Burapha on Monday, 17th December, on the A - B combination which was in its usual excellent condition with well grassed fairways and consistent greens. The weather was less overwhelming as a cooling breeze held sway throughout and scoring was generally good. The field of three dozen golfers was divided into two flights at fifteen and under. In the second flight three golfers recorded 36 points and countback was invoked, relegating Frank Riley to fourth place, behind his mate, John Coetzee and runner-up Martin Patch. The flight winner was Darren Beavers with 38 points. Perhaps Darren was still on a “high” after Newcastle United’s EPL win two days previously?
TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday Dec 18, Crystal Bay (B&C) Tom, Brad, and Karen Sparkle at Crystal Bay Happy Holidays Golfers! By the time you read this Christmas will be nearly upon you or already here. Every good golf girl or boy is hoping to find shiny new clubs, stacks of balls, or a lower handicap under the tree. Putting all shopping on hold, twenty Tropical Golfers gathered at the appropriately named BJ’s Holiday Lodge for eat and greet. Cars loaded with bags and golfers headed to Crystal Bay, singing Jingle Bells all the way. Or maybe not. This is a great layout and we like to point out the good points however this track is really deteriorating. The areas between fairways is very ordinary with tree
In the top flight fourth place went to visitor Jason Pereira on 35 points, losing third on countback to John Doyle. Second place went to George Mueller with 36 points. The winner by a margin of five points was Phil Davies whose 41 points was his best round for a while. Here was one Welshman whose game was certainly on song. Near pins : Gerner Lykke, Olivier Tahon, Darren Beavers and Paul Chesney. The consolation awards for the best front nine went to Tommy Marshall with 20 points and Michael Wright with 19 points on the back nine. trimmings from months ago lying everywhere and in a lot of places unplayable. Seems if a mower can’t get there it’s just left to become an overgrown mess of long grass and tree trimmings. But for 1080 green fee and caddie what do you expect. One begins to wonder what will become of this course if in high season little to no maintenance happens. We will be monitoring it closely. Some parts of fairways were squishy-wet while other sections brown and bare. Greens rolled true but some had areas of blight. Crystal Bay is usually described as a “scoring course” and while today’s scores were good, they were not as elevated as usual. And the winners are... the best score of the day – a most excellent 42 points. Is Tom back? John Davis (12) as usual was right in the hunt with a proud 39 points. Good scores. B-Flight (19-25): Returning Brad Robbins (21) announced his arrival in style by taking his flight with a no nonsense 40 points. Brian Gabe (19) holed a 100 yard wedge to help earn his 36 points and a place in the roll call. Great shot Brian! C-Flight (26+): Lady Luck was no luck at all as Karen Brown (34) truly earned her flight winning 35 points, a couple ahead of Gordon Clegg (28) with 33. Congrats. Best Nine (non-winners): The best “I almost had it” nine hole scores were Torsten Bischoff and Brian Parish, both with impressive 21 point nines. Safe and Happy Holidays to all!
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Tuesday 11th December we went to Greenwood with 3 groups, where we played the B & C course. The course was as usual in very good condition. It is always a real pleasure to play here. Today we welcomed Paddy’s family from Australia to play with us. We had nice sunny weather and a cool breeze. You can feel that the winter is coming and the temperatures go down a little bit. It was again Dave Smith, who showed his good form of the last weeks. Nobody could stop him and
he won with 36 stable ford points. Second was Ty Anderson with 33 stable ford points and third Neil Harvey with 32 stable ford points, beating Paddy Devereux on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Jonathan Pratt, Dave Smith and Bob Edwards. Thursday 13th December Mountain Shadow was our venue. The course was also in very good condition. The weather was sunny with a nice strong cool breeze. Today we had some who could beat Dave. The wind was strong
and it was not an easy game today. Stan Rees kept his nerves under control and won with 33 stable ford points after a strong back nine. Dave Smith was the runner up today with 31 stable ford points. ROYAL GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB BANGKOK
The Royal Golf & Country Club is the closest 18-hole standard golf course to the Bangkok’s Suvanabhumi International airport. Specifically, the golf course is located off Bangkok to Pattaya highway around 30 minutes from the main tourist and commercial areas of Bangkok or 5 minutes from the airport. Chohei Miyasawa from Japan designed the Royal course to preserve the natural environment throughout and to give golfers a scenic, yet refreshing atmosphere in which to enjoy their game. The Bangkok golf course is also surrounded by many colorful flowers and shade trees. The layout features undulating fairways and
tiered greens on nearly every hole. Lots of canals separate each hole and the golf course from the surrounding housing which is mostly owned by Thailands elite. For example, the front nice affords excellent view of 2006 Thai prime minister’s home and back yard: making a real Royal Golf’ experience. Long par 3s on the course are some of the most challenging in Bangkok, especially the 230 yard 17th, which is as difficult as they come! The 14th, a par 4 of 409 yards, requires two very long shots to reach the green in regulation. The next hole, a par 5, is famous for the narrow fairway and landing area, requiring three straight
shots to avoid the water running down the left side of the hole. Hole 16, another tricky par 4, dubbed the Mickey Mouse hole because its sand bunker, resembles the famous Disney character, has two imposing ears sticking out. The greens, in particular at Royal, are some of the best kept in Bangkok, and roll year round at over 10 on the stimpmeter. Good practice facilities with putting green, pitching green, sand bunker, and grass driving range make Royal a good place for a pre-round warm up or practice session. A spacious clubhouse is perfect after-match comforts, making a round at Royal a great way to layover in Bangkok! The Royal Golf & Country Club Bangkok Special offer !! PSC DARTS TEAM CROWNED 2018 PEA OPEN CHAMPIONS
The Pattaya Sports Club (PSC) 4man darts team was one of 96 talented outfits taking part in the 2018 Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) Darts Open held in Bangkok last month. Captained by Rolly Gabiana, the PSC team, which also featured Kenneth Madalang, Karl Webb and Bam, played with great skill and thanks to some consistent high scoring they fought their way right through to the final where they proved to be victorious and were crowned the 2018 PEA champions. The team’s great success was overseen by Paul Cornwell, So-
cial Chairman of the Pattaya Sports Club, who looked on proudly as the Pattaya quartet flew the flag for the seaside city against the nation’s top players. The second day of the 2-day tournament on October 22 saw the singles matches take place. Rolly, Kenneth, Carl and Bam joined 232 of Thailand’s best darters, all aiming for glory and the chance to be crowned this year’s PEA Open champion. In a long day of round-robin and knockout matches the Pattaya players performed admirably but slowly their numbers were whittled down as the ‘sudden

death’ rounds took effect. Rolly managed to carry the PSC emblem all the way to the final h o w e v e r, achieving a number of maximum 180 scores and high checkouts along the way. In the final Rolly proved to be unstoppable and beat his opponent Arty by a score of 3-1. Rolly, who hails from the Philippines, has been playing darts regularly in the various nightly Pattaya darts leagues for the past 2 years and in the future has his sights set on joining the professional ranks by way of the qualifying school held in the UK each year. Until then, he is happy to help his Pattaya Sports Club teammates continue their quest for more titles. The next major tournament to feature the PSC team is the Chiang Mai Darts Open on November 24-25.
MATCH REPORT: PCC V BRITISH CLUB Pattaya Cricket Club hosted the British Club on Sunday at the beautiful Thai Polo Ground for a social game of cricket that represented Jack Dunford’s 40th anniversary of his very first cricket match in Thailand. Fouteen-a-side was the format, with batsmen batting in pairs and in descending order of age, against their respective bowling pair for 4 overs each. Five runs were deducted for each wicket lost and the format meant every player batted for 4 overs and bowled 2 overs. It promised to be fun and entertaining for all, except the scorer! Needless to say it was Jack (74 years young) and Colin hastings (72) who opened the innings for the BC against the fearsome duo of Bobby Young (65 and a bit) and Richard Harvey (65 just). It was fair to say the flight and guile of the experienced bowlers proved too much for Colin who was out twice, but Jack was at his masterful best as he nudged and knurled
his way to 5 not out. A few wides meant the score was in positive territory, but not by much. As the ages decreased so the batting became more intense and the bowling more lively. With a change of innings after the first four pairs and the net score at 76 the game was deemed to have started well, mainly because there had been no injuries. PCC in response began in the most reassured fashion with Bobby and Richard looking as they had played the game forever, well they had really. Richard was particularly severe on anything short and Bobby nearly hit one off the square. For all of Jack’s experience and knowhow he and Colin could not break an amazing and enterprising opening partnership of 18 that put PCC firmly in control of the match. After 4 overs PCC were net 68 and the game was set for a thrilling finale. The BC batsmen really upped the run rate as Denzel and Dale in particular found the boundary regularly and BC completed their innings with an impressive net 142. However, the PCC batsmen were in no mood to roll over and Venky and Salman launched an assault against the BC best bowl-
ing attack to incredibly reach a net 121 with 2 pairs still to bat. Andy Emery looked in fine touch but kept the BC side interested by losing his wicket from the last ball. But Wezley and Bernard made the game safe despite some fantastic catching by Ben Eastwell and ensured PCC won back the Dunford/ Philbrook Trophy. The post match fines session included a fine (a shot of a rather disgusting spirit) to five fielders who could of all taken a catch offered by PCC batman Paul who top edged straight up to the slip cordon and no one laid a hand on it! The after match party was held at the club sponsors Retox Outback Bar where many cricketing stories of yesteryear were recounted and Jack was presented with a miniature cricket, signed and dated as a memento of a wonderful day and achievement We are all looking forward to the 50th anniversary! PCC would like to thank the club sponsors PSC, Amigo Group, Retox Outback Bar, Macallan Insurance and Aegis International and encourage anyone with a passion for the game to join the club by visiting the club website www.pattayacricketclub.com or the Facebook page.

GETTING IT OUT THERE So, you’ve written a song? It’s a lovely song with nice lyrics and a good tune. You’ve sung or performed it to your friends and family and they all like it. You’ve been to a recording studio and made a demo utilizing your friends to play on the track with everyone telling you that this song must be a hit. Now what do you do with it? If you are a singer/songwriter and aspire to being a hit artist then you already have a ‘vehicle’ for your song, namely yourself. Maybe you know of an artist that’s looking for material because they don’t write their own. The problem for any songwriter is finding a way to get your song heard by the public in such large quantities that it will make you money or, at least, famous. I just mentioned the word ‘vehicle’ and this is the term used by the music industry to describe the carrier of your song. It can be an artist, a TV show, a film or, indeed, anyone or anything that is going to utilize your creativity . If you are happy with just your friends and family hearing it then fine. However if you have larger aspirations, then more thought and work needs to be put into ‘getting it out there’.
As an ambitious artist, you may think that if a song comes from a big publishing company, or a famous songwriter, it is bound to be a Hit, right? … WRONG! No matter how successful a publisher or writer may be, not every song in their catalogues will be a Hit — and they know it. Believe me, they are saving the BIG Hits for major artists. On the flip side of that scenario, however, if you are able to identify ‘hit’ material yourself, you may find gems in unexpected places, perhaps right under your nose in your own music community. It’s up
to you to know how to choose songs that fit you and have the potential to take you to the top. Perhaps we songwriters/artists/
ISSUE 609 JANUARY 2019
musicians should take a step back and strike a more professional perspective about our ‘product’ or the songs we write and sing. If we were shoemakers, but we didn’t quite know what a handbag looked like or how to identify a ‘real handbag’, we probably wouldn’t be too successful in the handbag making business. The same is true for us in the ‘Business of Music’. We must know exactly what a ‘hit’ is before we can write one or find one that will launch and maintain our careers. One of the best ways I know to
identify the ingredients of a ‘hit’ is simply to dissect it. If you want to know what makes a clock tick, take it apart. If you want to know what makes a million selling ‘hit’, study the songs that are in heavy rotation on the radio. AND - don’t just study your favorite genre. Even if you don’t particularly like a certain style of music, there just might be something you could learn from a song that is selling millions of copies. Humble yourself and open your mind. Learn what it is that makes a song work! Success takes a lot of hard work but from my experience, the harder I worked, the luckier I got. Get it out there – NOW!
