PEPPER & SALT RESTAURANT
Today I was given the opportunity of visiting Pepper and Salt restaurant on the dark side off Khao Talo. I had previously heard good things so I was looking for-
ward to the visit. It has a reputation for great European food at reasonable prices so I had to see for myself. The owner/chef is named Eddie or “fast Eddie” as he likes to be called. He is very personable, seek him out for a chat. Upon arrival he announced he had selected some items for me to try but that I could look at the menu as well. First, let me say there is something for everyone on this menu. It offers many European, Thai, Indonesian and even Chinese

dishes. Over 40 by my count. At least a page of soups alone. We started with the Dutch classic of a big meatball served on cabbage with gravy on the side. An obviously classic staple and this was very good. The cabbage was not overcooked as it is frequently. Then they brought out a HUGE chef salad. This is clearly not a side salad but rather a meal in itself. Full Chicken breast, bacon, tomatoes etc. with a delightful dressing. I have never had one as good as this in Pattaya. Easily
shared among four people. Next came the classic Indonesian rice table. Most people are not aware that the Dutch adopted this dish and it is known as Rijsttafel or rice table. Twelve different mini dishes including two different types of satay skewers in gravy. A combination of vegetables as well as meats. It was served with sides of both rice and noodles. By far the best rice table I have had in Pattaya. We ended with their unique ribs. Quickly steamed NOT boiled so
Lastly they insisted we have dessert. (I am thinking I could roll home) nice mixture of ice cream grapes raspberries and sauce. It should be noted I could not help but notice there was masaman curry on the menu. Now understand I try this
the meat falls off the bone but is still meat. It was uniguely spicy, not Thai spice, not American spice, yet quite good. You can see from the picture of my eating friend named Colin that is was his favorite. He literally always had a rib in front of his face.

Therefor the motto of this year’s event is ‘Staying Strong’.

BEN VINKEN - THE ORIGINAL BELGIAN BEER SOMMELIER
Ben Binken is the world’s number one Beer Sommelier and on a recent visit to Pattaya, had a beer or two with our own Barry Upton on a luxury yacht moored at Ocean Marina. He was then due to do a tasting at a monastry in Bangkok, famed for their trappist craft beers. He told Barry that Craft beers in England have only one style but with Belgian beers there are many variations with trappist beers deriving from six monastaries.
Ben is always looking for colour, taste, smell and bitterness level, tasting the sugar and spice levels in the throat which makes beer tasting more complex than that for wine. For over 30 years, Ben Vinken has been a tireless champion of Belgian speciality beers: as a Beer Sommelier, beer lover and organiser of the annual Bierpassie weekend beer festival. Ben is also the author of several beer publications; two of these,
‘Trappist Beers from A to Z’ along with ‘Beer and Cheese’ are available in English. He admits that never in his long career has he witnessed the hype now surrounding Belgian beers abroad. “Nevertheless, Belgian brewers should not rest on their laurels,” is Ben’s opinion.” “They must provide a guarantee of quality and uphold our good reputation. Balance and a tradition that goes back centuries, that is what we are aiming for.” “But this should not stop us from
career as a legal consultant with Lamot, a Pils brewery in Mechelen. “But I discovered that I was better suited to sales and marketing,” he explains. In 1984 he moved to Palm Belgian Craft Brewers, where he could focus on speciality beers. These were marketed through tastings held in one café after another, events were held, the beer was served in its proper glass every single time... “We were pioneers,” Ben laughs. In 1992 Ben set out to be an inde-
being creative. Many beers have been improved through re-fermentation or the use of dry hopping. These beers have set new standards.” The dynamic attitude of the microbrewers has filtered through to the big players. In 1979 Ben Vinken started his
pendent publisher. Books about Belgian beer were few and far between. “I published Michael Jackson’s Great Beers of Belgium in three languages,” Ben explains. “It turned out to be a runaway success. Michael Jackson, the English trailblazer for beer tasting, was

proved right in the end,” Ben Vinken concludes. “As early as 1984, he predicted ‘a quiet revolution of taste’, anticipated the resurgence of artisan brewers and made an unashamed plea for ‘real ale’. Michael taught us how to name and describe the various beer tastes and how to pour the beers in the correct way.” “He also inaugurated us into the secrets of beer and food pairing. There really is nothing new under the sun.” Ben Vinken is now writing books on cigars, saying that the hand rolled ones from West Cuba are still the best where the temperature is
cooler. The Dominican Republic and Honduras also make high quality cigars.

THE MYSTERY OF BITCOIN
In recent years a thing called Bitcoin has gained enormous attention. Some see Bitcoin or the technology behind it, called Blockchain, as a release from dependence on banks and governments. Others see it as a largescale deception campaign and warn investors not to get involved. The former believed themselves right when the price of a Bitcoin skyrocketed to astronomical heights at the end of 2017 and more than increased tenfold in a very short space of time. The latter are more likely to be confirmed now that the bubble has burst and
the Bitcoin price has fallen by more than 80% in the meantime. As with everything in life, the truth lies in the middle. Starting today, we want to bring you a little more light into this new phenomenon Bitcoin and especially the Blockchain technology in a monthly column with factual arguments and information. The history of mankind shows that with the introduction of any new technology often fears, mistrust, suspicion but also hope, enthusiasm and confidence were connected. The good thing about our fast-moving times is that we don’t have to wait decades to see what
this new technology really brings or will bring us, as we did with the introduction of the railway or the Internet. So stay relaxed and at the same time curious to accompany this development. Either way there are exciting times ahead. In our next column we will deal with the history of Bitcoin and the technology behind it. Following up to this we will answer questions like: What are cryptocurrencies ? How can I buy Bitcoin ? What do I have to do to get them ? What are the best websites for staying up to date with my Bitcoin ? Which are the best applications to watch my portfolio on my cell-phone ? What are the best exchanges ? Where do I get my wallets for storing Bitcoin ? How can I use them in day to day life ? How can I exchange them into FIAT money ? What are the best methods in terms of security ? How can I make money with cryptocurrencies ? What kind of industries will benefit from the blockchain technology and how can you yourself benefit from this
technology ? We will have a look into the blockchain community and show you some very interesting projects and how you can participate in it. We also will share with you how governments and authorities feel about this new technology and which kind of restrictions and regulations are discussed. If you want to start your own research, no problem, there are many opportunities and events going on especially in South East Asia where you can meet the leading heads and biggest influencers in the Blockchain space. If you can’t wait, we recommend you get in touch with the author. He is a former banker and has more than three years of experience in Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and the Blockchain technology. He organizes weekly meetings where likeminded people come together to exchange experiences about Bitcoin, Blockchain and crypto currencies.

Once again, Pattaya Classical Music came up trumps with an amazing concert at the Diana Garden Resort. and Fritz Kreisler. The audience was thrilled by the unusual pairing and the performers were also obviously enjoying the whole experience. At times, you could be forgiven for thinking that a full string quartet was onstage as the accordion sometimes filled in for the other three parts beneath the violin. Organiser and promotor of classical music here in Pattaya Gregory Barton, was also not used to hearing a pairing such as this but agreed that a wonderful sound was produced and some fabulous music produced. DEATH PENALTY IN THAILAND
In Thailand we have a lot of criminal charges against the defendant for the death penalty, though they are mostly drug related offences regarding selling illegal substances or producing them in large amounts with intent to sell. As these are big crimes when the police come to arrest the defendant they will most likely resist arrest and try to escape often resulting in a police casualty due

to firearms and/or other weapons. Another charge that invokes the death penalty is the hiring of a gunman to commit a planned murder of an individual, in almost all of these cases if the defendant gets arrested and the police and prosecutor can get a guilty verdict from the court, then the sentence from the court will then become a sentence to kill. We understand that charges like

these are serious but if these things happen to you, your friends, family or anyone you know, there exists non-profit NGO’s that can help take care of you and provide you with help. I have come to be the lawyer of one such organization by the name of Reprieve whose aim is to use the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners facing the death penalty or being held beyond the rule of the law. An NGO like Reprieve will help you by finding a lawyer to help your case like myself and also to pay for the lawyer if they can support it. Other tasks include getting in contact with your family if you unable to because you are in jail and investigating your case to bring light to the facts and ensure a fair trial.
They help us a lot with court processes such as finding evidence for the case such as proof from a school in the defendant’s home country of good moral character or say a previous place of employment to help strengthen your case. They will also assist and find witnesses that will aid your case and they will work together with us during court procedures to find a way to fight your case if you want.
OUR COMMENT: Organizations such as Reprieve work very hard for defendants going the extra mile to secure each person’s right to a fair trial and in doing so saving lives. I have to say to everyone please don’t give up if you are charged with a death penalty crime, contact your friends, family or NGO’s like Reprieve to help take care of your case. Don’t leave it in the hands of a lawyer who sometimes doesn’t even un-
derstand one word of your language. Check, double check and triple check because you are the one who will receive the punishment. If you have your own case or any questions regarding law in Thailand please feel free to write in to us and we will answer any questions or concerns in this column. THAILAND IN 2019: THE CORONATION OF KING RAMA X WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 4 TO 6 MAY the palace said in a statement on Tuesday. His official coronation had been delayed until after a period of mourning for King Bhumibol, who reigned for seven decades and was revered as a semi-divine figure in Thailand. “I agree to accept the wishes of the late king … for the benefit of the entire Thai people,” King Maha said in December 2016 when he assumed his position after accepting an invitation from parliament to succeed his venerated father. “This royal succession highlights a desire for stability and continuity in Thailand.” His coronation will come two and a half months after Thailand’s general election on February 24, the first since 2011, and will coincide with the anniversary of Bhumibol’s coronation on May 5, 1950.
Thailand’s king is to be officially crowned in an elaborate threeday ceremony held on May 4-6, the royal palace has announced. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 66, has been serving as the constitutional monarch of the Southeast Asian nation since shortly after his fa-
ther – King Bhumibol Adulyadej – died in October 2016 at the age of 88. “His Majesty deems it fit to hold the coronation ceremony per royal traditions for the good fortune of the nation and the kingdom, to be enjoyed by the hopeful people,”

SAVE A CHILD’S EYES NEW STYLE 7/11 IN PATTAYA
Wow what a fantastic launch to our Rotary Save a Child’s Eyes project. We stumbled onto the need for glasses during our Rotary Dream Box project and thanks to Khun Bu from Pattaya Optical and so many sponsors it
has become its own project. We started the night with 60 000 baht and by the end of the evening we had 97 000 baht to spend on helping kids see. Thanks to Khun Bu from Pattaya Optical for providing quality glasses at just 700
baht a pair. Thanks to our sponsors the Loft, Irish Society of Pattaya , Pattaya Optical, Freight Plus and Wind Energy Services for their generosity. Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with us tonight.
A 7/11 convenience store has now opened in Pattaya with a difference. Shaped as an eye catching boat, the new stylish look can be found in Pattaya Tai or South Pattaya Road. Other differences from the norm feature a two level floor arrangement with a coffee bar and bakery upstairs plus a giant TV screen with a sea creature theme running on it. This is a breakthrough for the 7/ 11 chain who are obviously trying to upgrade their image and
compete with larger convenience type stores. Pattaya People Media Group
would like to welcome this new addition to the wonderful Pattaya landscape.
JERRY “LEE” CARLSON SHOW - GIGANTIC SUCCESS Swedish entertainer Jerry Carlson came to Pattaya for a New Year Tour with 10 live performances at: Linda’s Restaurant (3 days), The Loft, Sand Bar, Lucky Time Bar, Murphy’s Pub, Tulip House and Harry’s Bar. All 10 shows was totally sold out, especially at the Swedish place Harry’s Bar in Soi Diana, rumors tells us that an all time record of F & B sales of quar-
ter a million baht was reached on that day. Jerry has a big following of fans that attend all his super energetic rock and roll concert when he is in Pattaya. This time he was accompanied by Haakan Nelson on drums. During his stay here the Pattaya Expats Club honored Jerry and Haakan with Certificates of Appreciation for charity concerts in the past as
hey are generous people who like to support the less privileged in our community. In Scandinavia he has a big show called THE LEGENDS featuring impersonators of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison and Jerry as the rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis. The show performs in sold out concert halls and Jerry hope he one day can bring this big show to Asia. In the meantime he enjoys the close contact to the audience when he plays in local bars and restaurants.

The PATTAYA EXPATS CLUB is the first and largest live advice and information service for foreigners in Thailand. PEC celebrated its 17th Year of advice forums in 2018; established in March 2001 with the motto ‘Expats Helping Expats – to live safely and legally in Thailand.’ The PEC meets every Friday morning at Mercure Hotel, Pattaya 2nd Road, Soi 15 with news and guest speakers from 1130am and breakfast buffet from 9.50am. All Nationalities are Welcome. Our aim is to provide foreign visitors and residents with good quality advice to comply with the laws of the Kingdom, to make their stay here safe and to be a channel for local Thai authorities to the foreign community, plus charitable efforts to the community. The PEC became the first of its kind in Thailand, when founded in Pattaya, growing rapidly through regular weekly meetings and via thousands of subscribers to its Enewsletters it promotes Pattaya
worldwide through our website, www.pattayaexpatsclub.info. Our format has always been informal to attract a wide audience but our focus has been to give clear advice on theme’s which are important and practical to help foreigners and their families stay safely and legally in the Kingdom, to meet new friends in the community and to interact in a more culturally sensitive way with all Thais. Our lobby area has display tables from Thai companies (our Sponsors) offering our members free advice – with a Thai law firm, a Thai hospital health check desk, two Thai Insurance companies and a visa / immigration consultancy. We provide practical information on Thai Law, constant advice on applying for visa’s and keeping them up to date, how to safely and legally own a house, a car, a condominium or motorcycle. There are feature talks given by notable Thai Doctors to encourage good health and from Insurance experts to ensure foreigners have ad-

equate protection for medical needs, home contents, vehicles etc. We aim to give visitors to Pattaya of all Nationalities a better understanding of the Thai culture, so foreign residents can better integrate into their adopted second home here in Pattaya. We feel this can be of benefit to prevent crime and assist Thai authorities with an additional channel of communication for local civic news, and which will assist the tourism industry. Our club members enjoy a breakfast buffet at the Friday meetings. The featured speakers give big screen presentations from the Club laptop computer / digital projector set up. Members ask questions and receive answers from experts in their field such as real estate agents, travel agents, bankers, investment consultants, hotel owners, hospitals, school headmasters, lawyers. There are some fun items too – movie people talking about their film careers, ‘world exclusives’ of major book authors
who come to launch new novels in front of our audience, plus best beaches and islands to visit in the region. To make our live meetings far more widely received by the home expat TV audience we have a generous regular coverage given us by Pattaya People Media Group TV Channel to report the PECs weekly features. PPMG newsmagazine gives us 2 full page coverage as do local media to promote the club speakers and activities. We have cooperation of local Thai authorities to help us provide valuable information to members. We have a non-profit style 20 page Constitution document to regulate ourselves to a high standard. To report our finances legally we have a Ltd Company format transparently showing our cash handling from memberships and hotel entry tickets and sales of club products with accounts displayed monthly on our website. Perhaps the only Club in Pattaya to have a legal format entity.
Of course our advice and information format has long since been copied by newer organisations formed around Thailand and in Pattaya. Similar clubs have formed following the great success of our style of networking with expats. Among those newer advice clubs is ‘The Pattaya City Expats Club’ which incorporated itself 23 July 2003 with a Constitution supplied by the PEC. Others which have formed since the original PEC have included Dutch, French, Finnish and Scandinavian language clubs. In the PEC we have a German language, French & Finnish sister clubs. One of the PEC’s tasks, as Mother Club in Thailand for a range of expat advice clubs has been to assist new clubs around the Kingdom with model Constitution documents in Pattaya, Chiangmai, Koh Samui and Udon Thani. We formed an umbrella organisation for linked clubs called ATEC (Association of Thailand Expats Clubs.) Our aim is to continue to provide
a good and worthwhile informal service to assist foreigners and we have several Telephone Help Lines. We aim to give club members a clear understanding and awareness of their responsibilities in staying in Thailand. It has also given us, in many years operationally, opportunity to make useful donations to Thai charitable causes here in Pattaya and by our foreigners awareness programmes to be a small contribution to assist the Thai authorities to reduce and prevent crime. We hope this is a useful service to have in the region with the biggest foreign population of tourist visitors and expats. We have been consistent in these aims throughout the years and by this hope to draw attention of Thai civic leaders to our service. We hope to be of assistance to Thai authorities and to forge even better links in the future.

HEALTHY LIFE AND NUTRITION
Hello everyone ! I am very glad to present you this new section dedicated to health and wellness, especially linked to nutrition. Through the articles, we will discuss the different ways that nutrition offers us to maintain or regain excellent health, to prevent many diseases, to have more energy, to regain good mood, or simply to lose a few pounds. In this first article, I would like to introduce our company and tell you more about our health business that we are running here in Pattaya for more than 10 years. Then we will address a topic that has the wind in its sails, nutritional medicine.
Our story at a glance In 2008, my wife Manee and I founded the Nutrition Club, a health concept that I imported from Belgium where I was active in the food supplement industry since 1992. We have started to help many expats by offering nutritional check-up and diet plans with the use of food supplements. Members of various associations of Pattaya already know us very well thanks to our weekly presence at the Pattaya Expat Club for nearly 10 years, our conferences and our events organized over the years. Since 2012, we started to manufacture some products such as Kefir drinks and yogurts, then gradually we expanded our range and opened a health products
shop. Today the Nutrition Club became the Pattaya Health Club and we developed our own brand, HealtHut. We currently offer more than one hundred health products, mainly imported from Europe and we manufacture more than ten “homemade” items. All products are natural, almost all organic, so they are pesticide-free, preservative-free, gluten-free, and almost all vegetarians. In parallel, we continue our coaching activities and specific nutrition plans such as detox programs, weight control, and balanced nutrition for adults and children, etc. All these services and natural products fit perfectly into the concept of nutritional medicine, itself prescribed by nutritionists, naturopaths and doctors who
toxicity from heavy metals, fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic chemicals including pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. In addition, food additives, flavourings and colourings or particular foods themselves may lead to sensitivi-
turb our internal environment. Poor sleep and psycho-social stresses also affect and our ability to cope effectively and impact on our health. Living an optimally healthy lifestyle provides the best condi-
fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains and drinking plenty of filtered water is a good start. Foods may be depleted in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as a result of depletion in our soils, green harvesting and cold storage and all too often we consume foods that are highly processed and overcooked or of poor quality and little nutritional value. Our bodies are then affronted daily by excessive production of free radicals caused by our polluted environment and stressful lifestyles. As a result oxidative stress has now been shown to be the root cause of over 70 chronic degenerative diseases. Nutrition plays an important role in virtually every medical condition. It follows that correcting nutritional imbalances is fundamental to the prevention and treatment of many common conditions. Source: https://anpa.asn.au/nutritional-medicine/

Nutritional Medicine Nutritional Medicine is a part of the alternative medicine family. The Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association (ANPA) describes it as “a holistic approach to the interactions between nutrition and the environment on human health.” The main idea is when the body is supplied with the correct balance of foods, vitamins and minerals we remain healthy. DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:-
DO YOU REALLY NEED A DAILY MULTIVITAMIN?
Is it necessary to drink 8 glasses of water a day? And are eggs bad for your heart? You’ve heard these myths before –now get truth – Dr.Kamaljit Singh. ·Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day:- No need to count cups. Research shows people who gulp a glass of H 2O when they’re thirsty get enough to stay healthy and hydrated. Water-rich foods like soup, fruit, and vegetables and drinks like juice, tea, and coffee all help you get your fill. You might need to drink more water if your urine is dark yellow, you don’t go regularly, you’re very active, or you live in a hot climate. · Eggs Are Bad for Your Heart: -Omelet lovers, rejoice. Eating an egg or two a day doesn’t raise the risk of heart disease in healthy people. Yes, the yolks have cholesterol, but for most of us, the amount found in any one food isn’t as bad for you as the mix of fats from everything you eat. What’s more, eggs have nutrients, like omega-3s, that may lower the risk of heart disease. · Antiperspirant Causes Breast Cancer: -Don’t sweat it! Some scientists think the chemicals found in antiperspirants and deodorants can be absorbed through your underarm. The idea is they end up in breast tissue and make tumors more likely. But the National Cancer Institute says there’s no evidence connecting either product with breast cancer. ·Being Cold Gives You a Cold: -No matter what your grandma might’ve told you, spending too much time in the cold air doesn’t make you sick. One study found
that healthy men who spent several hours in temperatures just above freezing had an increase in healthy, virus-fighting activity in their immune systems. In fact, you’re more likely to get sick indoors, where germs are easily passed. ·You Need a Daily Multivitamin: -You may have heard that a multivitamin can make up for nutrients that aren’t in your diet.
ISSUE 610 FEBRUARY 2019
Researchers don’t all agree on that point. But if your doctor tells you to take vitamin, do it. And if you’re pregnant, you need to take folic acid to lower the risk of birth defects. Still, the best way to get your nutrients is to eat a diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and healthy oils. · Eat Breakfast to Lose Weight: -Eating breakfast does help some people lose weight. It can stave off hunger, and it might prevent random eating later in the day. If you’re not a breakfast fan, you can still slim down. A Cornell University study found that
the non-breakfast crowd didn’t overeat at lunch and dinner, and they ate about 400 fewer calories a day. The bottom line: Skipping breakfast may help some healthy people shed pounds. ·Green Mucus Means Infection: -The contents of your tissue can’t take the place of a lab test. Studies show that green or yellow mucus is slightly more common in certain bacterial in-
fections. But it’s not a sure sign that you have one or that you need antibiotics. A sinus infection can cause clear mucus, and a common cold can turn it green. ·Sugar Makes Kids Hyper: Sugar isn’t good for kids, but research shows the sweet stuff won’t cause them to act out, hurt their schoolwork, or make them unable to focus. Since many parents believe there’s a link, though, they expect their kids to behave badly after eating sugary food. So, they’re primed to notice it if it happens. ·A Toilet Seat Can Make You Sick: -Don’t stress if you can’t cover the seat. Toilet seats are usually pretty clean — it’s bathroom doors, door handles, and floors that tend to be covered with bugs like E. coli, nor virus (a.k.a. “stomach flu”), and the flu. Cover your hand with a paper towel before you touch doors or handles, and use hand sanitizer or wash afterward. ·Cracking Joints Causes Ar-
thritis:-The sound might annoy people around you, but that’s about all the harm it does. You may think bones or joints rub together to cause the noise, but that’s not so. It results from a gas ubble that forms between the bones and “pops.” If you enjoy doing it, keep on. Studies show it doesn’t cause or play a role in arthritis. If you feel regular or severe pain when you do it, see your doctor.

CHINA’S ECONOMY SLOWS TO WEAKEST RATE SINCE 2009

GDP growth to slow to as low as 6 per cent this year, although many argue the official figures were not to be trusted and true growth could be as low as 4 per cent. Officials from the country’s National Bureau of Statistics acknowledged the risks on Monday. “The external environment is complicated and severe, the economy still faces downward pressure,” Ning Jizhe, the statistics bureau head, told reporters, noting that China contributed 30 per cent to global economic growth last year. He also flagged more macro policy support measures to support growth. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned in its latest World Economic Outlook update that China’s slowdown was a big risk to the global economy and would hit commodity-producing nations such as Australia particularly hard. The IMF has downgraded global growth forecasts for 2019 and 2020 for the second time in three months. ‘No sign of a hard landing’
viously reported GDP growth for 2017 was 6.9 per cent, Beijing last week revised this figure down to 6.8 per cent. The annual growth rate for the fourth quarter GDP was 6.4 per cent, its slowest rate of growth since 2009. This compared to growth of 6.5 per cent in the third quarter and was in line with economists’ expectations. But investors liked slightly stronger-than expected retail sales growth of 8.2 per cent for the year, with data showing the growth of consumption in rural areas outstripped urban areas. Industrial production for December increased 5.7 per cent, and up 6.2 per cent for the year. Beijing is particularly concerned about containing unemployment

By Michael Smith Shanghai | China says the world’s second-largest economy faces further downward pressure this year after reporting the lowest rate of quarterly growth since the global financial crisis as expected following the introduction of US trade tariffs and a slowdown in domestic consumption and investment. China’s gross domestic product rose 6.4 per cent in the fourth quarter, in line with economists’ forecasts, while annual growth came in at 6.6 per cent, which was the lowest in 28 years. But markets were heartened by better-than-expected growth in retail sales and industrial output. The focus now is on what steps Chinese leaders take to stimulate the economy asgrowth moderates to as low as 6 per cent this year and whether China and Washington can agree to a permanent trade truce in the next six weeks. There is also growing concern about what China’s slowdown means for global economic growth. “The latest data suggests that economic growth remained weak at the end of 2018 but held up better than many feared, in part

adjusted income growth slowing to 6.2 per cent from 6.9 per cent in the previous quarter. The nominal growth rate of retail sales of consumer goods did slow sharply, to 2.6 per cent, but this was mainly due to the collapse in auto sales after the government lifted subsidies. In Australia, the market reaction was relatively muted for the Australian dollar and also in the equity market. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.7 per cent in early afternoon trade. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was trading 0.3 per cent higher. The release of China’s annual economic data was more closely watched by investors in Australia and around the world than usual. Concerns about China’s slowing economy and trade tensions with the United States have rattled global markets. Crude steel production rose 6.6 per cent in 2018. The growth met the Chinese government’s official target of 6.5 per cent. Beijing is expected to lower this target for the current
in their trade stand-off. China’s economy faces its toughest year in more than a decade Shanghai | China’s economy faces its toughest year in more than a decade with some economists warning true growth will fall as low as 4 per cent as deteriorating consumer confidence, a slowing manufacturing sector, and Donald Trump’s tariffs take their toll on Australia’s biggest trading partner. As China prepares to release data on Monday showing growth slowed in the fourth quarter to 6.4 per cent, even leading economists within the country warn the official GDP data will mask many of the challenges facing the world’s second-largest economy. While consensus forecasts among the major broking houses is for official growth of 6 per cent or more in 2019, forecasts from independent economists ranged as low as 4 per cent. It is believed this view of the Chinese economy is also shared at senior levels of the Australian government.

PEC Visa Advice Desk
Darren Mcgarry from Key Visa Company attends Pattaya Expats Club on the “Visa & Immigration Information Desk” with all the latest updated information to answer all Club members queries.
Friday, 8 February Darren McGarry of Key Visa
Darren McGarry of Key Visa, long term sponsor of the PEC, will discuss all matters pertaining to applying and maintaining Thai visas. For 13 years, Darren has helmed Key Visa, and is the main visa consultant as well as the driving force behind the company’s policy of doing business European style in the heart of Thailand. Darren has brought uncompromising ethics to a tainted industry, along with the policy of paying for a service only when the service has been completed and not a moment before. This practice, often promised and rarely delivered by other companies, is Darren McGarry and Key Visa Company’s standard operational procedure. Over the years, Key Visa Company has become a trusted name among the many expats living in Thailand, known for being indispensable in case of visa problems. Darren is also well known, and well liked, by Immigration and Embassy officials and earned a reputation as an expert lecturer
during his 9 year tenure as the visa and Immigration adviser to the Pattaya Expats Club. The constant changes in visa procedures and rules mean Darren’s job, the job of teaching the foreign community how to preempt difficult situations and avoid expensive mistakes, is never done. https:// www.keyvisathailand.com/ about-us/ www.facebook.comkeyvisathailand Contact Key Visa: Tel : 038 422 131 Fax: 038 412 277 Darren : 08100 45397 E-Mail: info@keyvisathailand.com Opening Hours Monday to Friday, 10am – 5pm Key Visa is situated directly opposite the car park entrance of BIG C on Sukhumvit, South Pattaya. Friday, 22 February Stuart Saunders Aid Work, Dentistry & Inventions
Stuart is back to discuss his inventions, aid work, and remind us that good dental habits can keep our smiles even brighter! Pictured above is Stuart’s ‘FlossFirst’ “credit card”, a unique product that has won international acclaim - winning Gold for the ‘Best New Health Product’ at the International Invention Exhibition & Technomart. Australian Stuart Saunders has been inventing since the early ‘60s; his first invention was a stereo crystal set, to listen to his home radio station while away at boarding school. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design at UNSW part time, on a traineeship with Leyland Australia in Sydney. Most of Stuarts inventions have been automotive, (suspensions, differentials & 4WD systems), or for the environment; sometimes both, e.g. his EV driveline which has greatly reduced weight and friction for low energy consumption, but which still makes a better riding and handling car. For ‘clean up’ there is his Credit Card Dental Floss, ’FlossFirst’, which he sees as the key to oral health; Stuart instructs students how & when to floss & brush, saying ’do this, & your teeth will last 500 years!’ This is particularly relevant to indigenous & isolated populations, due to their typical poor access to health and dentalcare. ‘FlossFirst’ won a Silver Medal for Best New Health Invention in the same exhibition, and his plan for ’Pattaya Bypass’ won a Bronze for Transportation. http://www.flossfirst.com/ Stuart can be contacted at: SDS@EsDesign.org or Floss@FlossFirst.Com Mobile: 080 0021166, Land: 038 238380 Our meeting venue is The Mercure Hotel, Pattaya 2nd Road – Soi 15. RACKETLON – FOUR RACKET SPORT SPECTACULAR
Despite Racketlon being a big hit in Europe as a four sport collective, it is relatively new to S. E. Asia. Frank Leiber is a former world champion in racket sports and in January held his second annual Racketlon international completion at the Ambassadour Hotel just outside Pattaya.
As with the Decathalon and Pentathalon, Racketlon is a series of sports played one after another, in this case, in order from the smallest bat to the largest racket. So, competitors start with table tennis and then move on after a three minute rest to badminton. Another three minute rest and
then squash followed by tennis. Each game is scored with the winner being the first to 21 points. However all points are cumulative right up to the last tennis point. The January event attracted some of Europe and Asia’s finest contendors with the final contested by 2 superfit players from

BUNKER BOYS Monday, January 14th Mountain Shadow 1st Jimmy Carr (15) 39 points 2nd Tony Scambler (18) 36 points 3rd Kob Glover (27) 34 points 4th Neil Carter (11) 33 points 5th John Jack (21) 32 points 6th Raleigh Gosney (22) 32 points Near pins Tony Scambler, Bob Cowell, Ken Elmore, Kob Glover. The biggest field this high season so far (twenty-five) for our game at the difficult Mountain Shadow course. We also welcome back today Eddie Kelly, Bob Cowell, and Gordon Melia so our numbers should be even bigger
GROWLING SWAN KING’S NAGA G.C. – 10th January, 2019. “Bernie Mahorse/Macart fires off 43 points to blitz the field” Twenty golfers took up the challenge today at King’s Naga, two buses and a few cars were required to ferry all out to the course. A word of warning for those venturing out to King’s Naga, road works are under full steam and you can be caught up for an extra half hour both in and out. A bit of an inconvenience but as most of us are retired it’s a small hiccup! Well it’s Thursday and a game of pain & suffering called golf is about to begin. The course was in good nick and offered plenty of run. Bunkers were clean and raked, Fairways tidy, but the greens I found to be a little slow. Putting close to the greens was a little difficult as the buffalo grass certainly took the speed from the ball. Although I do believe that one golfer used his putter when a meter from the green and he actually sank the putt giving him a Birdie. (Par 3) All in all if they improved the showers in the place I do believe that numbers would improve. It is priced right! Our five groups teed off about 10
over the coming weeks. A very hot day and a slow round with a few holdups along the way. For a change today we didn’t see the names of Ken Elmore or Keith Norman in the winner’s list, maybe they are keeping their powder dry for the final week of golfer of the month. Today Jimmy Carr found his best form again to take first place with a fine score of thirty-nine points. Tony Scambler despite his medical certificate for all his ailments put together a good score of thirty-six. Kob Glover took third with thirty-four with Neil Carter one point adrift in fourth. John
Jack made his debut in the winner’s circle in fifth on thirtytwo edging out Raleigh Gosney into sixth place. Near pins went to Tony Scambler, Bob Cowell, Ken Elmore, and Kob Glover. Wednesday, January 16th Royal Lakeside 1st Robby Watts (9) 39 points 2nd Les Cobban (8) 36 points 3rd Phil Mashiter (6) 35 points 4th Kob Glover (27) 34 points 5th Kevin Labar (13) 33 points Near pins Barry Gosson, Kob Glover, Robby Watts, Kevin Labar. Despite the higher than average green fees and the travel distance to the course, we managed to attract a good field of twentythree for the game at Royal Lakeside. Imagine our delight when we went to check in to be told our green fees had been paid and we should go straight to the starter on the first tee. Our joy was short lived when we found another group with a similar sounding name “The Banger Boys” were all ready to go with caddies etc. After some clarification, we had to return to check in and pay for our round, then return and take the caddies that were ready
min earlier than our allotted tee time, and can say we were not held up at all. Twenty golfers insured that we would play two flights with all 6 novelties in play. A-Flight saw Martin Kempton take the show with a good score of 39 points, second home was Takeshi Hakozaki who on the Par 4 eighth hole shot an EAGLE yes in the cup in two. Well done Takeshi! Third past the post where a group of four golfers, but unfortunately with only one place left on the podium it’s to the count back and three golfers will miss out. Ian Ward filled the last spot and the unlucky three were, The Viper Mark Stapleton, Keith Kissy Buchanan and newcomer Jon Dean. Worth a mention Buffalo Bills near hole in one probably 6mm from the hole, unlucky Bill! B-Flight saw the score of the day posted, Bernie McCart came home with an excellent score of 43 points. Leaving us this week, Colin Stielow came in second six shots behind the winner! Andrew Turtle Allen round of the placings. WINNERS FROM KING’S NAGA. A-Flight 1st Martin Kempton (11) 39 pts. 2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 36 pts. 3rd Ian Ward (12) 35 pts.
B-Flight 1st Bernie McCart (32) 43 pts. 2nd Colin Stielow (25) 37 pts. 3rd Andrew Allen (33) 36 pts. NEAR THE PIN. 5 Denis Steele. 7 Dave Maw. 12 Bill Steinmann. 16 Shane Young. LONG FIRST PUTT. 9 Peter Grey. 18 Martin Kempton. In the photo we have from L to R; Colin Stielow, Bernie McCart, Keith Buchanan with Mike Johns taking a squiz over the top. Back at the Swan we welcomed back Martin Kempton, Denis Steele, Ian Ward, Takeshi Hakozaki and new comer Jon Dean, with that unfortunately we have to say good bye to Colin Stielow leaving us to head back to Aust for a few months. Take care Colin and we certainly hope you travel safe! Once again The Viper set D-For out amongst the throng to collect for the needy of Pattaya with The Growling Swan is renowned for its generosity. A great achievement from all concerned lets continue the great work done by all, A Fantastic Effort! For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086. “TAKE IT EASY HOLE IN ONE BONUS GOES TO B3000. THIS MONTH!” “GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!”
ISSUE 610 FEBRUARY 2019
to depart with the other group and take our rightful tee time. It was unfortunate for the other group who had already waited an hour but not our mistake so off we went into the heat. Another slow round but not as bad as recent games so all in all not too bad. The course was in very nice condition as always with a slight wind blowing so no excuses for poor scores. Robby Watts blitzed the field with an excellent round of thirty-nine and will receive a cut in his handicap for his next round of one stroke. Les Cobban is again back on track and took second place with thirty-six. Phil Mashiter in his last week with us took third with thirty-five points. Kob Glover continues to build her game and took fourth place with thirty-four points, Kob is now the most improved player in the Bunker Boys against handicap. Kevin Labar rounded out the winner’s circle with a round of thirty-three. He also snared a near pin as did Kob with Robby Watts and Barry Gosson taking the other two, none of the regular suspects for near pins i.e. Neil Carter, Geoff Parker
or Jimmy Carr got a near pin today. On the way back Colin Greig was so engrossed in conversation he missed the turn to the highway and had to come back through Chon Buri. Friday, January 18th Pattavia 1st Tony Scambler (18) 40 points 2nd Ken Davidson (23) 40 points 3rd Peter Allen (29) 37 points 4th Andy Gray (29) 36 points 5th Jim Payne (33) 36 points Near pins Daryl Vernon, Neil Carter, Michael Brett. Despite the course being very crowded today’s game was played at a good pace with the lead group finished in three and a half hours. The course was in reasonable condition given that it is heavily used, but once again the greens had a few people scratching their heads, wicked slopes and fast greens make for much frustration for ordinary and even good putters. A good field of twentyfour rolled up for todays round. Today was the last game of this tour for Andy Gray and Phil Mashiter who return to the sunny UK weather.
For the second time in a month, Tony Scambler blitzed the field with forty points. Given all his ailments this was a remarkable feat as he could barely mount the stairs back to the clubhouse at the finish. Former club champion Ken Davidson is hitting good form just in time for the memorial and carded a round of forty also beaten on countback. The diminutive Peter Allen appeared at the presentation so it was clear he had a good score of thirty-seven points to take third place. Andy Gray signed off with a round of thirty-six for fourth place and generously rang the bell. In a rare visit to the Bunker Boys, Jim Payne rounded out the winner’s circle with thirty-six points. Golfers are reminded that the annual memorial competition is scheduled for Wednesday, February 6th at the Khao Kheow course with the A & B nines reserved for the competition. Any societies wishing to enter are welcome and should register at the M Club. Tony Scambler
double winner Jan Lovegreen who may soon find the dirty tricks brigade move their allegiance from Rob Brown.Watch out Jan for the return of the Italian and the bee!!
CAFE KRONBORG Navy- North and West, 17th January 2019 Yellow Tees AKITOSHI In – BROWN Off ! Cafe Kronborg golfers visited this fine golf course today and played our favourite North and West nines. Once again nothing to write about the condition of the course that has
not been said before – first-class! By arranging a Japanese incursion we were able to bring a halt – albeit only temporary – to our prolific A Flight winner Rob Brown! Akitoshi Ito, with a great score of 38 points won the A Flight by three shots from Rob Brown who dispute rumours was not crying! Our B Flight was taken out by our

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Wayne Wins a Three-Way Countback, On Friday 18th January, 2019 we already knew that Greenwood Golf Course was going to be busy for this day, with at least 3 PSC Bars all with a 10.00 am tee time, followed by various other groups. First to the starters and managers, well done to you. All three nines were used, with Links golfers starting on the “C” nine, to be followed by the “A” nine. We then proceeded to have a clear run for the entire round. The weather for the start and most of the game was just perfect for golf, with the sun behind cloud and a pleasant breeze, making very comfortable conditions. The course is looking a treat right now with the plenty of water to keep the fairways green. Some areas, perhaps, had a little too much water and were soft, with the ball picking up some mud, but had good run. The normally quick greens, at this time of year, tended to be just a tad slower, maybe they are due for a mowing.
Great conditions gave us the good scores we might have expected and gave us a thrilling three-way tie in the “A” flight. Wayne Peppernell has been in excellent form this last couple of weeks and with the more powerful finish held out in a tight countback situation. All three players had fine scores of 39 points, so Ralph McConnell then won his countback against an unlucky Mike Kaps who had his final game this trip. Top efforts from all three. Right behind them were two newcomers to Links, with 38 points each. Zac Carson won the countback from Jason Kerr. Crowded up there. “B” flight was a little more cut and dried with returning Greg Thompson scoring first up with 36 points. John Hughes was right on his tail scoring 35 points. Then came another countback as Keith Melbourne nudged out his mate, Len Jones, just. Both did well for 32 points, and Tip Briney rounded out the podium with 31. Near pins: Ralph McConnell (C3), Mike Kaps (C6), Tony Kerry (A2),
TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday, Jan 18, 2019 Greenwood CC Bob, Andre, and Gordon are Tops at Greenwood We are moving into the New Year nicely, and this is a reminder there are only 330 shopping days until Christmas. Before heading to the malls twenty five Tropical Golfers headed to Greenwood for the first time this year. Some had shiny new golf gear to break in, or maybe just break. After the usual “meet, greet, and eat” at BJ’s Lodge, the cars loaded up and the caravan to Greenwood was on its way.
We knew in advance that three golf groups where scheduled for the same time, and there was some trepidation it would turn into a chaotic mess. Greenwood staff was up the challenge however, and the well choreographed start let all groups get around without bumping into each other. Greens were in very good condition. Fairways while good overall, were a botanist’s dream with numerous kinds of grass, clover and some weeds on each one. SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Sunny week On Tuesday 15th January we went to Treasure Hill with 4 groups. It was a lovely day. The course was in very good condition, but the trees on the fairways and the greens prevented high scores. We had nice sunny weather with a nice breeze. Jonathan Pratt and Paul Davies kept each other good in balance. Both playing very well and Jonathan had huge drives today. Both ended with 36 stable ford points, but
Jonathan was the best on the back nine and won today. Third was Martin Hayes with 35 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Bob Edwards, Willem Lasonder and George Gamble.. On Thursday 17th January was our venue King’s Naga. The course was in good condition with many challenging holes. The greens were not top today and slow. The weather was sunny and not too hot. We missed the cool breeze today, but we survived after 18
holes. Jonathan Pratt confirmed his good form this week, but today was Willem Lasonder his opponent. Both ended with 37 stable ford points, but this time was Willem just 1 shot better on the count back. George Gamble became third with 33 stable ford points, beating Martin Hayes and Stan Rees on the count back. The nears to the pin were for Stan Rees (almost his second hole-inone), Paddy Devereux and Jonathan Pratt. Twelve soccer obsessed, and very lucky boys from the Father Ray Children’s Home recently took a day off from school to travel up to Bangkok to claim a prize for winning a competition. PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE GREATS
For many years now there has been a growing number of ‘tribute’ acts in the entertainment field. It started with ‘The Bootleg Beatles’ and ‘Bjorn Again’, an Australian Abba look and sound-alike
band plus there has always been a glut of ‘Elvis’ impersonators. Suddenly every major act in the Universe from Madonna (Mad-OnHer) to Oasis (No-Way-Sis) to Fleetwood Mac (Fleetwood Back) were being copied and audiences were paying good money to see what some people termed imposters. Holiday resorts like Benidorm in Spain, are now flooded with all kinds of tribute acts. Recently in Pattaya, we have been entertained by the likes of Pink Floyd, Freddie Mercury and Queen, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, the last two led by myself. As a
big fan of both of these legendary bands, I sometimes enjoy putting on my John Lennon Sgt. Peppers outfit or a Hawaiian shirt and pump out the hits I grew up with. In my opinion, the strength of a tribute act is down to the quality of the catalogue of material on offer and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of singing those 60s favourites. For the ‘serious’ musician, it’s appalling how the public are happy to watch ‘pretenders’ rather than the real deal. I believe there is a big place in the entertainment spectrum for originality and entertaining musicianship so long as the audience opens up their minds to hear something new. Before copy acts appeared, the likes of Jimi Hendryx, Keith Emerson, David Bowie and such like, pioneered the music scene and influenced the progression of popular music. All were highly entertaining in their own way without feeling the need to replicate what had gone before.
ISSUE 610 FEBRUARY 2019
As a music songwriter and producer for the best part of my professional career, I have always stood on the fence between these two extremes. On one hand, I am influenced heavily by my favourite artists but have always tried to be original as possible in my creativity. For a long period in the music business, it was almost impossible to be totally original as record company executives wanted only what was commercial and similar to the successful hits of the day. I think recently the tide has turned somewhat with the advent of the download and the subsequent lower incomes to be derived. With You Tube and streaming, it’s much easier to find a diverse range of styles from all over the world. Therefore it must be up to the young generation to try to be original, to offer up something fresh and new, but only for the love of it. Until that happens, the old songs will always be the best and it’s a tribute to the great songwriters of
the 50s, 60s and 70s, for their songs to still sound as fresh today as when they were first released. Maybe the fact that technology was nowhere near as advanced as it is now, reflects in the quality of the writing and innovative production techniques used in those
days. So, let’s all enjoy the mass of great material and variety of entertainment available to us while appreciating that not everyone will opt for the same thing…..and don’t forget the local by law that states for artists, wherever or whatever you are performing, ‘thou must sing and play Hotel California every night’!!!
