POSEIDON RESTAURANT
Finally got invited to try the monthly Italian “Creative Italian Sampler” at Poseidon Restaurant in the Jomtien Complex. First let me say it is a very nicely appointed place with a well-stocked full bar. This monthly event was sold out but they managed to seat Colin and I. The sampler consisted of 16 different items served as small por-
tions like tapas. You can order as many as you like, and can even repeat the ones you especially like. Not being shy about such things I started with the Carpaccio. When asked about the marinade all I got is it is “an old Italian recipe”. Next during the started phase went with the Parma ham and melon. Nice but then that is what I expected.
It was clear this was going to be a lengthy sitting so I decided to get my veggies with a grilled vegetable terrine with cream cheese. Not that I had been “good” I could get serious about the rest. Obviously chose the minestrone soup, which was different due to the BACON! Delicious.
The stuffed Parma chicken with tomato sauce on the side was delicious. While tempted for seconds I was only half way through... Next came a shellfish seafood filled squid bite with pesto. The bite was tasty but time to move on. A small (thank goodness) portion
of lasagna arrived. I am thinking who can stop with a small portion? The good thing about eating tapas style is you get lots of visits from the waiter, easy to say may I have another wine please?
6 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA
Next came the Roast roulade of pork that was filled with olives, tomato, and herbs with nicely seasoned baby potatoes. Yum One more fish the baby grouper served on warm black spaghetti with basil and tomato and onions
was a great ending. Thinking about desert….Hmmm Went with an Italian cheese plate with 4 types of Italian cheese and grapes with crackers. Wait I see a desert someone else has so I decided to try the Stracciatella with bourbon vanilla, and swiss chocolate homemade ice cream. While I should be done, I tell the waiter one more cheese plate please. Delivered promptly. A very nice night. Even better there was a police checkpoint on the way home but I was waved through.

BUNGEEING FOR CHARITY
Presenting the cheque to Father Peter, President of the School for People with Disabilities. After retiring as Headmistress of St. Anne’s Primary School in the Northern Ireland town of Donaghadee, Rosemary Budding didn’t do what many retirees do and relax and take it easy. Instead she travelled six thousand kilometers from home to volunteer at the Father Ray Foundation. Originally planning to stay for just six months at the Foundation, altogether Rosemary spent four years teaching English at the
Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities. Upon returning home to Donaghadee Rosemary was contemplating what to do to commemorate her seventieth birthday. An idea came to her head, an idea to raise funds for the school and for the students in Thailand she had grown so fond of. Her idea took her even further than Thailand, half way around the world to the south island of New Zealand where, with long elastic ropes tied to her legs, she jumped off a bridge and bungeed for the

BIKER FRIENDS VISITING
Members of a well known international biker group from Denmark and locally here from Pattaya came to visit the Pattaya
People Media Group Chairman to wish him a speedy recovery from his operation and stay in hospital. A great time was had with these
very good friends of the Chairman. In the evening a fantastic dinner was enjoyed in the famous
Cafe des Amis Fine Dining restaurant.
DANISH VIP GUESTS Tina and Paul Damsgaard flew in to Thailand from Bali to visit Pattaya for a day only to have a lunch together with Patsanan and Niels Colov of Pattaya People Media Group and talk about “old days”
in Denmark. The lunch took place at Suggestions Gourmet Restaurant in the Nongprue area, and the guests was really treated to very high standard food. If you have not yet visited this excellent restaurant you should make it a priority now, Regular guests says jokingly about Suggestions, that there a 3 things
to “complain” about: 1. It is a bit hard to find the restaurant, 2. The portions are very big, and 3. The
prices a a bit low. Phone: 086558-0491 (Edwin). Bon appetite.

BURAPA 22 - BIGGEST AND BEST YET
This years Burapa Bike Week was hailed by everyone who attended as the most amazing event ever staged in the Pattaya area. Over 60,000 attendees enjoyed the wonderfully decorated site at the Chayapreuk stadium and the high quality list of musical acts, appearing live, including Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (ex Guns ‘n Roses), Mud Pie South from Sweden, Goober Gun and the Stuart Craig band from the UK, George Gakis from Greece and an as-
tounding new young Thai band called the Electric Stones. There were sideshows, all kinds of specialist shops, Native Indian shows, plus a magician and all kinds of strangely dressed individuals, all helping the cause of quirkiness in the extreme. Then, of course, there was the amazing array of motor bikes on show plus vintage cars and unusual art displays. The whole event went without a hitch and as usual, showed the
world how to hold a ‘Woodstock’ style free festival where biker groups, bands of musicians and a truly international audience could mix together under a banner of peace and love. This is the 22nd consecetive year

FOREIGN PROPERTY OWNERSHIP
As a lawyer dealing with assisting foreigners to settle in the Kingdom of Thailand I always get bombarded by questions regarding foreign ownership of property in the Kingdom of Thailand. Technically according to Thai law foreigners cannot own any part of the Kingdom’s land, they can own buildings but not the land, and there are only two legal ways for foreigners, as an individual or a company to ever own land legally, the ways that foreigners can have legal ownership meaning having their name on the back of the title deed: 1) A Foreign company can own land if they have received a Board of Investment (BOI) incentive, but there are many aspects need to be taken into account such as; not every type of business can receive BOI incentives, not all BOI incentives allow for land ownership, the business has to comply with Thai law and BOI regulations otherwise the incentive can be revoked at any given time if the rules and regulation are not followed, also when
ISSUE 611 MARCH 2019
the business is closed or the BOI incentive have been revoked the land is required to be sold within a period of no less than 180 days and not more than one year to Thai individual or company. 2) Foreigners as an individual can legally own a maximum of one rai of land (1,600 square meters) for residential purposes only if they bring in to the country forty million (40,000,000.00) Thai Baht (approximately 1.3 million US dollars) to invest in specific government approved Thai bonds for a period of no less than five years. This is according to the Land Code Amendment Act (No. 8) BE 2542. With this act permission of the Ministry must be obtained and if the rules are not complied with, such as removal of the bonds before the investment terms is over. The land is required to be sold within the period of no less than 180 days and not more than one year, or the land can be disposed of by the Ministry. What I have mention above is something that not a every for-
eigner can relate to, even though by Thai Law foreigners cannot own land there are ways that they can make use or have control of the land legally. There are gener-
ally three ways for foreigner to make use or control the land legally in Thailand which are: (1) Setting up a Thai company with the minimum of fifty-one percent Thai shareholders and maximum of forty-nine percent foreign shareholders to hold the land and building ownership. Having ownership of the land in the company name can be beneficial especially when the land is to be sold to another foreigner as there is no need to transfer the land at the Land
Department, and only the director(s) and shareholder(s) are required to be transferred from the seller to the buyer. But there are also some disadvantages of owning a company such as the required yearly auditing and tax payment, which can be bothersome. (2) Put the land in a Thai spouse, partner or friend’s name and make a thirty year lease agreement to lease the land from them, while having the building put in the foreigner’s name. Due to the lease period being more than three years, by law the lease is required to be registered at the land department and put on the back of the title deed. A general lease agreement at the land office can be used or one can be drafted by lawyer to include additional clauses and conditions, this process should take no longer than one day at the land department. Advantages of a land lease
is that there is no yearly auditing to be done, but instead having the use of the land indefinitely there is a thirty years limit, however the lease can be inherited but only up until the end of the lease period. (3) Put the land in a Thai spouse, partner or friend’s name and register Usufractuary giving you full use of the land for the period of your natural life. Usufractuary registration is done at the land department and it is similar to a lease registration along with similar benefits the same as as a thirty year lease agreement. In regards to a foreigner owning the building, by law the building can be considered a separate entity to the land making it moveable property which a foreigner can have ownership of. The registration of building ownership is done at the District Office, before the building ownership can be registered the petitioner is required to submit a newspaper announcement for a period of thirty days to give notice for any objection of ownership, if no objection is raised
the building ownership can be registered. Lawyer comment: We will always recommend anyone looking to purchase a property to contact a lawyer, don’t do it by yourself or believe some Thai person who says that it is easy. A lot of people are cheated in this type of transaction and have lost a lot of money as well as many a property. By protecting yourself you are ensuring you have the best possible chance to secure a new property safely and with no problems down the line. The lawyer fee for a service like this will consist of two things; the first a sales and purchase contract and secondly for when you have the property transferred to your name and you receive the title deed in your hand. Then and only then would you have to make the final payment, if you have any questions or queries about Thai law, please feel free to contact us at any time. MEETING THE LOCALS
it was announced that the students at the Foundation would be giving them a few lessons. The laughing stopped when they realised they would be playing basketball at the Technological College for People with Disabilities, and they would be playing while sitting in a wheelchair. Once again the local students won. Being away from their own children can be difficult for the sailors, male and female, so their visit to the Father Ray Day Care Center brought smiles to everyone’s faces. You could see the joy in the faces of the visitors, it must have made them think of their own children, and how they were missing them. The toddlers were a bit ner-
The aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis sailed into Pattaya waters recently carrying several thousand military personnel who were due to take part in the annual Cobra Gold Military Exercises. For the US Navy personnel on board the ship it means a time of sacrifice, being away from family and loved ones and also working in an environment that can be unpredictable at times. Coming to Thailand and being part
of the Cobra Gold Exercises gives them exposure to another culture and a different way of life than what they are used to at home and on board ship. One group from the ship recently visited the Father Ray Foundation where they spent a morning not only meeting the children and students, but also having a lot of fun. They played soccer at the Father Ray School for Children with Special Needs, and while they played

DETOXIFICATION
Why do we need to detoxify our body? Facts Much of the food we eat contains pesticides, herbicides, dyes, preservatives, flavourings, stabilizers, processing chemicals, artificial growth hormones, antibiotics and even tranquilizers (found in meat). On top of that, most conventionally packaged foods have been over-processed and therefore devitalized of innate nutritional value. When the body is
overloaded with these poisons, the detoxifying organs, such as the liver, kidney and skin, are compromised. When this happens, the immune system is weakened, other systems don’t function properly, and disease can occur. Consequences It’s well-known that a variety of health problems stem from poor digestive health. Stomach pains, abdominal cramps, chronic fatigue, constipation, low energy, headaches and allergic reactions
can all be traced back partially to problems with waste elimination. An impacted bowel can easily cause sluggishness, irritation, irritability, low energy, “brain fog” and changes in someone’s appetite. That’s because unreleased food and waste particles can cause mucus and bacteria to ferment and form in the colon, which might result in “toxins” being released back into the bloodstream when they’re circulated. Failing to have regular bowel movements also poses the risk for problems absorbing nutrients properly, which can lead to low energy and other complications. Solution To prevent disease from gaining a foothold in your body, it is important to stop taking in toxins
Colon Cleanse
and remove those already stored in your body (called detoxification). So in Healthut we have prepared a “7 Days Complete Detox Program” that consists in 3 main steps: 1. Preparing your body before the cleanse (3 days) This step is very important in order to prepare your body for a period of fasting, especially for people who use to eat processed or junk food, refined sugars and who consume alcohol regularly. So during these 3 days, eat only organic and plant-based foods as much as possible. Drink some fresh carrot/apple/beet juice, along with our herbal supplement program Our preparation program contains specific supplements such as Superfoods smoothies, Fibres and Probiotic beverages.
are these specific products:
Toxins Removal We use specific components (Hydrated Bentonite clay and Psyllium Husk) that work together synergistically to quickly and efficiently pull out the toxins.
Disease almost always originates in the colon, because when it is overloaded with toxins on a regular basis, those toxins seep into the bloodstream and lymph, eventually settling into weaker areas of the body. Cleansing your colon isn’t that difficult, but it does require some effort.
3. Preparing your body to get back on solid food (1-3 days) This step is similar to the step 1 in order to ease your body to get back on solid food. It last one to three days
Herbal Cleansers What to Expect This herbal Cleanser breaks up the fecal matter, and prepares the way for the bentonite and psyllium, ensuring that the mucoid
If you follow the cleanse as outlined above, you’ll feel much lighter (energetically) and have
2. Fasting (3 days) Indeed to stop taking in toxins and allows an efficient detoxification, fasting is the key! The benefits of fasting are well-known for our general health, but if we want to detoxify our body correctly, or to remove out parasites, fasting is a necessarily step. However, some specific herbal mixtures that do not affect fasting process are allowed and included in our program. Those will help you to feed your body at a cellular level, bringing essential micro-nutrients that we need to maintain a good energy level. And the best part is that you will not feel hungry! Here

more energy afterwards. Your digestive system will be able to absorb more nutrients. The “transit time” of food moving through your intestines will shorten. You will have begun the process of removing disease-causing encrustations from your bowels. Your intestines will begin to regain their normal healthy state. The result? A vibrant health! DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:SIGNS OF POOR CIRCULATION Poor circulation can cause all sorts of issues, from brittle nails to erectile dysfunction. Here’s what you can do about it- Dr.Kamaljit Singh. • Why You Need Good Blood Flow: -It’s hard to believe, but your body holds about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Along with your heart and other muscles, they make up your circulatory system. This network of roadways carries blood to every corner of your body. But when your circulation is poor, it slows or blocks the blood flow. That means the cells in your body can’t get all the oxygen and nutrients they need.
• Signs of Poor Circulation: -When your limbs can’t get enough blood, your hands or feet may feel cold or numb. If you’re light-skinned, your legs might get a blue tinge. Poor circulation also can dry your skin, turn your nails brittle, and make your hair fall out, especially on your feet and legs. Some men may have trouble getting or keeping an erection. And if you have diabetes, your scrapes, sores, or wounds tend to heal slower. • Snuff out Tobacco: -Nicotine is the active ingredient in cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco. It harms the walls of your arteries and thickens your blood so much, it can’t get through. If you smoke, quit. It can be hard to stick with it, but your pharmacy or doctor’s office can help. • Control Your Blood Pressure: -If it’s too high, it can cause arteriosclerosis, a condition that hardens your arteries and can help choke off blood flow. Aim for 120 over 80 or less, but ask your doctor about the best numbers for your age and health. Check your reading at least once a month. You can buy a home blood pressure monitor or use a kiosk at your pharmacy. • Gulp It Down: -Blood is about half water. So you need to stay hydrated to keep it moving. Aim for 8 glasses of water a day. You’ll need to drink more if you exercise or if it’s hot outside.
• Relax and Twist: -Yoga is a low-impact exercise that can jump-start your blood flow. When you move, it brings oxygen to your cells. When you twist, it sends blood to your organs. And upside-down positions shift blood from the bottom half of your body up to your heart and brain. • Hit the Wall (in a Good Way): Not a yogi? When your ankles or feet swell, try the legs-up-the-wall yoga pose. Also called viparita karani, it’s an easy way to send your blood in the other direction. Lie on the floor or on a yoga mat, with your left or right shoulder close to the wall. Turn your body so you can put your feet up, and scooch your bottom against the wall. Stretch your arms out on the floor with palms down for balance. • Pump It Up: -Aerobic means “with oxygen.” So when you run, bike, walk, swim, and do similar exercises, you take in more oxygen and move it to your muscles. This gets your blood pumping, makes your heart stronger, and lowers your blood pressure. Set a goal to exercise for 30 minutes, 5 to 7 days a week. Break it up into small chunks if needed. If you walk, know that moderate to intense speeds — at least 3 miles an hour — offer the best health benefits.
• Eat More Plants and Less Meat: Let’s face it: There’s no downside to a balanced diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Stay away from saturated fats that can be found in red meat, chicken, cheese, and other animal sources. Steer clear of too much salt. That will help keep your weight in a healthy range and your cholesterol and blood pressure in check — and your arteries clear. • Sip or Soak: -It’s a temporary fix, but a bath is a great way to kickstart your circulation. Warm water makes your arteries and veins open a bit wider, letting more blood through. Hot water or tea does the trick as well. • Brush Your Body, Not Just Your Hair: -Sweep your blood in the right direction. Take a body brush with stiff, flat bristles and stroke on your dry skin. Start with your feet and work your way up, using long motions on your legs and arms. Make circles on your belly and lower back. Dry brushing also gets rid of dry skin. Do it every day, right before your shower. For More Details Visit/Contact us: Email: info@drkamalholistic.com Mobile: (+66)869032543.
• Cop A Squat: -This form of strength training not only gets your blood pumping, it also helps lower your blood sugar and helps with back pain. Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms at your sides. Now slowly bend at your hips and knees, but keep your back straight, like you’re sitting in a chair. As you return to the starting position, bend your arms for balance. • Compress Your Socks: -Put your wardrobe to work. Compression socks put a bit of squeeze on your legs so your blood doesn’t hang around too long. Instead, it’ll move back up to your heart. Ask your doctor which length and amount of pressure are best for you.
• Stand Up at Your Desk: -Sitting for hours at a time isn’t great for your circulation or your back. It weakens leg muscles and slows the blood flow in your legs, which could cause a clot. If you’re a desk jockey at work, consider a standing desk instead. It may take a little while to get used to, but getting on your feet works the valves in your leg veins, sending blood up to your heart.

GETTING A BRITISH PASSPORT FOR YOUR THAI CHILD phy shop who are experienced in taking passport photos for babies (if the child is very young) as the photos have to match the guidelines 100%. The passport application form must also be countersigned by someone who has known the family for 2 years, if they are from the EU they should also supply a copy of the data page of their passport. If the Mother is Thai, then the documents she needs to supply are her Birth Certificate, Thai Identity Card and house registration (Tabien Baan) as well as her passport if she has one and any marriage/divorce or change of name certificates. The Father (British Citizen) needs
As a British Citizen when you have a baby with a foreign partner, your baby is also entitled to a British Passport. There are some countries which don’t allow dual nationality but Thailand and UK both allow their citizens to be dual passport holders. So, in most cases your baby will be eligible for a British passport. There is quite a lot of paperwork to be collated so as soon as you find out your partner is pregnant start finding out the documents you need as some things may need to be sent from overseas or copies obtained. You must supply two color photographs of the baby and it is best to use a professional photogra-
to supply his passport and the long version of his Birth Certificate (the one with his parents names on). If the father was born after 01/01/1983 he will also need to supply a copy of his parents birth certificates and their marriage certificate if they were married. If both parents are British Citizens then they would both need to supply these documents. If the child already has a Thai or other nationality passport then you will need to supply that also. Along with the babies original birth certificate and completed application form. There are some exceptions in which your child may not qualify
for a British passport including if you were also born overseas. If this is the case, then please get further advice before deciding not
to apply as a British passport will be very helpful for your child’s future. If you would like to apply for a
British passport for your Thai child then please contact Darren at info@keyvisathailand.com
ESSENTIAL EXPAT TIPS FOR A FIRST BRITISH PASSPORT FOR FULFILLING LIFE IN THAILAND CHILD BORN IN THAILAND When you first come to Thailand and experience the sun, sand and other things that Pattaya and Thailand are famous for, life can seem like one long holiday. Those of us who have a few years here under our belt know this can be very far from reality. There are a few simple measures which you should take to ensure that your life here is as enjoyable as possible and you don’t need to keep looking over your shoulder and worrying about money for emergencies. Take out a health insurance policy Over recent years it has become possible to pay health insurance in monthly installments, previously this option wasn’t available and as many Thais and foreigners didn’t have 30,000 THB+ to part with in one lump sum they would choose to go without health insurance. Needless to say this is not a wise choice unless you have sufficient funds to cover your own medical
expenses which many older expats who face high insurance costs choose to do. There are a wide range of insurance companies to choose from and with the option of monthly installments, health insurance should be affordable for everyone. Have a second visa option Thai visa rules can and do change frequently, what was acceptable last year may not be acceptable in years to come. If you have built a life here and maybe bought a home or started a family then it is unwise to rely on just one option for renewing your visa extension. If you are working here, you most likely have a Non B visa dependant on your job. You should understand that if you are married to a Thai national or have children with a Thai national then you also have the option of extending your visa based on supporting your wife or family. If you have a retirement visa and are

married to a Thai n ational you can always change from a retirement visa to a marriage visa if your income suddenly wasn’t enough to meet the requirements. Start thinking about your second visa option before you need to. Learn some Thai Not everyone is going to become an expert in Thai language but learning some basic Thai will make your life here much more fulfilling. You will gain more respect from the locals if they see that you are making an effort to blend into Thai culture by learning to communicate. It also means that you don’t need to rely on Thai partners or friends to help go about your everyday business and give you more of an independent life. Thailand is a fantastic place to live as long as you are sensible and take responsibility for your future here just like you would do at home!

PEC Meeting Programme – Fridays, 01st-29th March 2019 Friday, 8 March Sam Hunting Already 12 US Democrats Running for US President in 2020!
Coming from the great state of Maine, Sam has been writing about and following the endless ins and outs of American politics for years, and has shared many interesting observations with us during his previous talks. With so many characters in the current American political pie, and a plethora of Democratic and even a couple of Republicans running for the highest office in 2020, can anyone cover them all? If anyone can, it is Sam, so come hear his in-depth insights about the United States’ partisan politics, and ask any questions you might have about “The Land of the Free”. Friday, 15 March Tom Coulter Insights into Pattaya Police Procedures, Foreign Police Volunteers Update, and Liaising with US Embassy & NCIS.
Back by popular acclaim, Tom is an engaging and compelling speaker, with gold dust insights into policing policies and methods. He will update us on law enforcement - how both the police and foreign police volunteers work. This talk includes FPVs liaison with the US Embassy & NCIS (Navy Criminal Investigation Service) with anecdotes on February shore leave of thousands of US Marines to Fun Town. Tom Coulter had a distinguished career in the British army in the Ulster Defense Regiment, and in policing with the Royal Ulster Constabulary. He also worked

20 years as a private detective in Northern Ireland. His field of expertise before coming to Thailand 15 years ago was in anti-terrorism. Tom joined the Foreign Police Volunteers 12 years ago and has held the position of their Operations Manager for 7 years, responsible for a team of 60 police assistants, as they are now called. Tom will also discuss some expat misperceptions of the Royal Thai Police force. After working with them for over 12 years, Tom has a fair understanding of police operations. This is an ideal opportunity for the foreign community to gain knowledge about the practical aspects of police methods assisting and keeping the community safe in Pattaya. Historically most of the activities of the FPV have been based in Walking Street, the heart of Pattaya’s night life, where staff assist the visiting public with general inquiries and work with Tourist Police duty officers to resolve incidents such as drunken behaviour or breaches of public disorder. However, their duties include other tasks throughout the city and beyond, many in the day time as well as the evening. If you would like to join the FPV Foreign Police Volunteers, please contact FPV Operations Manager Tom Coulter 087-063-7378 Friday, 22 March Khun Wongsatorn Kitkasetkun, AIA Insurance. ‘A sustainable solution for the future of food’ as this company’s website informs. Their Director for Asia, Stuart Prentice has been working in South East Asia for the last 5 years on various alternative investments, particularly in the agricultural sector. His introduction to hydroponics and aquaponics four years ago led to exploring links between this sector and the food safety and security issues that people face all over the world. This talk will focus around these food security and safety issues (regional/global) and how aquaponics is a realistic solution towards solving them. ‘Midas Aquaponics’ is a commercial venture so Stuart may also explain how individual investors can make a positive contribution to these issues “while generating a passive, hassle free income.” Check out their fascinating website: https:// midasaquaponics.com/ Our meeting venue is The Mercure Hotel, Pattaya 2nd Road – Soi 15. ISSUE 611 MARCH 2019
BUNKER BOYS Monday, February 11tth Soi Dao 1st Alan Sullivan 40 points 2nd Richard Mohns 37 points 3rd Neil Carter 36 points Winning team Paul Smith team With the cancellation of next weeks Kabin Buri trip a small group organised by Keith Norman grew into a much bigger event with a total of twenty-four golfers plus some partners making the trip up Sukhumvit to the beautiful Soi Dao course for two rounds of golf. As always the course was in pristine condition, the weather was beau-
tiful, so all in all perfect conditions for golf. The lowest six handicapped players were selected as captains and they, in turn, picked three playing partners in a draw. Prizes were on offer for the best three individual scores plus the winning team. On what is his favorite course Alan Sullivan produced the round of the day with a well compiled forty points, not surprisingly Alan was also on the winning team. Second place went to Richard Mohns with thirty-seven points with Neil Carter third on thirty-six points. The winning team was the Paul Smith team which
was comprised of Alan Sullivan, Daryl Vernon and Geoff Cox. Tuesday, February 12th Soi Dao 1st Roger Touhy 35 points 2nd Colin Greig 33 points 3rd Paul Smith 32 points 4th Les Cobban 31 points 5th Tony Robbins 30 points Near pins Tony Robbins, Neil Carter, Jimmy Carr, and Michael Brett The second day of competition got off to a bad start as Robby Watts must have eaten a bad prawn and suffered a gastric upset so was unable to participate. We abandoned the team competition and instead played individual. Misfortune befell Kate Oatway during the round as she fell into a trench, luckily she suffered no injury, just embarrassment and a bit of mud and water. Monkeys were everywhere on the course and raided a few carts, luckily nothing of value went missing, only a few bananas. There was no sign of elephants this time around. Alan Sullivan was unable to repeat the heroics of yesterday and didn’t figure in the scoring. Today scoring was more modest with Roger Touhy carrying the day on thirtyfive points. Second, went to Colin Greig on thirty-three, a further
point back Paul Smith took third with Les Cobban in fourth and Tony Robbins rounding out the scoring in fifth place with thirty points. Near pins went to Tony Robbins, Neil Carter, Jimmy Carr, and Michael Brett. Special thanks go to Keith Norman for organising and running the event. Wednesday, February 13th Bangpra 1st Eddie Bielby (18) 37 points 2nd Tony Robbins (21) 36 points 3rd Dave Maw (19) 35 points 4th Jim Bracket (7) 32 points Near pins Colin Greig, Neil Carter, and Tom McMurray X 2 With several staying on in Chantaburi to climb Khao Khitchakut numbers were down to sixteen for today’s round at Bangpra. The course was in poor condition, the temperature was high and the pace of play was ok. The course has deteriorated markedly compared to last time we played it and would definitely benefit from some ground staff attention and some rain. The bunkers were particularly poor with very little sand and caddies with no rakes. This was a big change from our last visit when we thought the course was back to its best condition again. Uncharacteristic poor putting from
Tony Robbins (three putts on sixteen and seventeen) allowed Eddie Bielby to sneak through to first place on thirty-seven points with Tony finishing on thirty-six. Dave Maw was third on thirty-five points and Jim Bracket rounded out the winner’s list on thirty-two. Near pins went to Colin Greig, Neil Carter, and two to Tom McMurray. Friday, February 15th Treasure Hill 1st John Hughes (20) 40 points 2nd Robbie Watts (9) 36 points 3rd Kob Glover (27) 33 points 4th Nial Glover (17) 32 points 5th Raleigh Gosney ( 22) 32 points 6th Colin Greig (10) 32 points Near pins Colin Greig, Jimmy Carr, Robbie Watts, Neil Carter. The last game ever for the Bunker Boys from the M Club was sufficient to lure the biggest field of the year, (thirty) out to play the Treasure Hill Course, even P J Redmond made his long-awaited return to the game. This is one of the few courses that is staying in good condition despite high season traffic and lack of rain, a credit to the ground staff and caddies. Despite being crowded the pace of play was ok and our lead group finished within four hours which is acceptable. Confidence is an essential element
2nd Bill Wilkinson (14) 36 pts. 3rd Dave Maw (19) 34 pts. NEAR THE PIN. A3 Shane Young. A5 Shane Young. B3 Dave (Is there any) Maw. B8 Dave (Is there any) Maw. LONG FIRST PUTT. 9 Kae Dayton. 18 Mikito Homma.
GROWLING SWAN 18th February 2019 “Welcome back Kae & Roy Dayton, Happy Anniversary.” We had fourteen golfers out for the day traveling to Khao Kheow a very popular course indeed. We have been trying to get on for the last few months but sad to say always booked out. Desperation comes into play so we took a tee time of 11.20 so at the very least we get to play this course. So it’s off to K.K for what we would expect to be a good game of golf. Well the only disappointment we suffered was the late tee time (which we were aware of) and that related to a late finish. Also the course being as popular as it is this meant that the days play was slower than what we would expect. Well after all is said and done there was not one complaint regarding the condition of the course, all were saying that it was in real good nick, Fairways mowed and tidy , greens ran true and bunkers were clean and raked as well.
ISSUE 611 MARCH 2019
All in all the opportunity for some good scores one would think, or was it! There appeared to be more people playing today, generally speaking we see very few on the course but today was the exception, we actually got held up on a few occasions! We were playing only the One Flight with all novelties in play. We attacked the course from the yellow (& Red) tees. We were playing courses A & B. It was to be Kae Daytons day, we have not seen the Dayton’s for some time but it was obvious that Kae had not forgotten her way around a golf course. She returned with a very good score of thirty seven. Second past the post (only 1 shot from the pace) Bill Wilkinson. Then rounding off the placing’s was Dave (Is there any) Maw. Out of the fourteen golfers that played nine golfers shot Thirty Points or more! Not too bad. WINNERS from KHAO KHEOW. 1st Kae Dayton (21) 37pts.
In the photo we have from Roy & Kae Dayton not just celebrating Kae’s win but also their Wedding Anniversary. Back at the Swan we welcomed back Kae & Roy Dayton. Sadly we then said goodbye to Colm Lawlor who is leaving us today and heading back to Bright Sunny Ireland. Good luck mate travel safe and we hope to see you real soon. Dobbsy set D-For from his chain to collect for the needy of Pattaya. We give thanks to those who choose to give. The Golfers and Punters from The Growling Swan are thanked for the generous efforts! For serious golfing with a dash of fun and compulsory sledging, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086. “TAKE IT EASY HOLE IN ONE BONUS GOES TO B3500 THIS MONTH! GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!’
CAFE KRONBORG Played Pattavia on Monday 18th February, where the course was in good condition with receptive greens and fringes that were not watered to within an inch of their life, making it a pleasant change to be able to bump and run onto the greens. The pace of the greens was not too fast, about right for Pattavia, although they are always tricky and attention to grain and slope is necessary. Back in the clubhouse the scores were pretty good with more than half the field managing 30 points or better. With reduced numbers of players there were only 3 places on the podium for each flight. Two people managed to beat their handicap to win their respective flights and B flight had a real tussle with 3 players on 35 points fighting for second and third places. There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 23 and the B flight 24 and above. The A Flight winner was Ty Anderson with a sterling 37 points, Ty being a very steady
player and no stranger to the top spot. Ty once again pipped Richard Kubicki who came second with 36 points. Ty making this a bit of a habit, maybe they just like the same courses. Richard should have done better starting with 5 pars and ending with 4 pars, but unfortunately the middle left a bit to be desired. Third place was decided on a close countback with 2 players having 31 points. Peter Bygballe took third place with 15 points on the back and 10 points on the last 6 holes and Rob Brown narrowly lost out, with 9 points on the last 6 holes. Peter winning his second countback in a row. In B Flight the winner was the in form Jan Lovgreen with the score of the day 38 points, Jan’s third victory in a row. At the moment it seems all Jan needs to do is turn up and he wins, Jan not playing last Thursday. Second and Third place were hotly contested with 3 players on 35 points vying for the 2 spots. The countbacks were straightforward though, coming in a strong second was Birgit Jorgensen with an impressive 20
of good sporting performance and this was on display today when John Hughes declared “when I want to win I can” and duly went on to shoot forty points and take first place. Also in a random act of kindness, John donated his winnings to the delinquent fund so free drinks for everyone. Robbie Watts returned to form and took second place with a solid thirty-six points. Strife in the Glover household tonight as Kob beat husband Nial for third place. Nial, Raleigh Gosney, and Colin Greig all finished with thirty-two and were placed accordingly on countback. Near pins went to Neil Carter, Jimmy Carr, Robbie Watts, and Colin Greig. To mark our last game from the M Club a party was held after the presentations with roast pig and chips on offer. Several non-playing members were in attendance such as Peter Hapgood and Alan Freeman. A small presentation of crystal was made to Neil and Yaya and they leave for Canada shortly with young Jack and hopefully some fond memories of their time with the Bunker Boys. Our next game on Monday 18th will be from Woody’s Bar in Soi Skaw Beach, the venue is Crystal Bay.
points on the back. Third was Peter Hammond with a solid countback of 18 points, Peter’s score could have been so much better had a few more putts dropped for him. Gordon Clegg who had a magnificent 22 points on the front lost out with a disappointing 13 points on the back. A fun day was had by all and plenty of drinking water was the order of the day as the sun was relentless, only hiding behind a small cloud for a brief moment. LINKS GOLF SOCIETY No More Bridesmaid For Masa On Wednesday 20th February 2019 Due to a mix-up in bookings we were dispappointed to miss out on our trip to Khao Kheow in January, but we made up for it today. Thirty nine golfers took to the course, after one no-show, and relished the decision to play from the yellow tees. Weather started hot, still, and uncomfortable, but eventually some cloud cover and a wisp of breeze gave some respite. We were told the day before that the course is not in good condition. On any day we can get differing versions of that subject, depending on the circumstances of the commentator. Although not in the pristine condition as at the start of the high season, probably due to heavy use and lack of rain, our group decided conditions were very good. Fairways, although drying somewhat are grassed and neatly mown. The greens are in excellent condition and mostly quite quick after being lightly sanded. The tee areas have
TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday, Feb 12, 2019 Bangpakong Rob, Tom, Carole, and Don Win on Tiger Tee Tuesday! This Tuesday the Tropical Golfers really broke convention and tried something different. As a fun experiment this Tuesday golfers could elect to play off the back black (Tiger) tees, or take things as usual. Bangpakong is an excellent choice for this variation as it’s a bit more forgiving. The Tiger Tee Champion was also presented with a 750 ml bottle of Vintage 2019 premium (Pattaya Moet) Spy Pink Sparkling Wine. Playing at a mere 7140 yards it’s not just a test of distance but also managing your handicap. Interesting some golfers with handicaps of 28 decided to get in the spirit, man up and have a go. Mostly it was “Let’s give it a try” for the fun of it. Nice to mix things up same

not come up as well after a renovation, not a disaster, but a little disappointing. Two flights today with the cut at 19 and under. Masa Takano has been the “bridesmaid” many times on this trip. He has had some excellent scores which deserved a Green Jacket, but somehow managed to be the second best score. Today, just before heading home and back to work, he got his wish. With a nice 39 points he took out the “A” flight and the Jacket. Well done.. Dave Hewson has been on the podium a bit and with his lowly handicap held second spot with 37 points and Chris Barker, another regular place getter, was third on 35 points. Derek Phillips and Mike Ehlert went to a countback on 34 points resulting in Derek getting fourth spot and Mike fifth. A three way tie had to go to countback to split them in “B” flight. Vic Barton won out to take first place from Bryan Barrell who, in turn, beat John Anderson into third. Gordon Loviolette with 31 points
old same old gets a bit boring. Were all retired or here on holidays so let’s have some fun. Nineteen golfers came out, and 10 took up the Tiger Tee Challenge. Prizes and placings were also different with litre bottles of Jack Daniels, Chivas Regal and Johnnie Walker Black up for grabs. With a maximum of 5 players in each flight there were 12 prizes spread over 19 players. Bangpakong was in its usual excellent condition, and for all the fairway woods hit this day it was a big help. Winning scores were divided into two flights, two for the Tiger Teams and two for those taking the familiar route. Each flight had two winners plus a single “Best 9” score winner. Lots to report so let’s get to it. A-Flight Tiger Tees (0-13): Rob Brown (5) was the Tiger Tee Champion today, hardly noticing the extra yards as he earned his

Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT On Tuesday 12th February we went to Mountain Shadow with 3 groups. It was a nice day with sun, clouds and a breeze. The course was in good condition and we enjoyed to play there. There were 3 players in the same flight who stayed close together and made it an exciting game. The decision fell on the last hole again. Despite a good par of Ty Anderson was the 1 pointer of Joop Bijsterbosch enough to become the winner with 36 stable ford points. Ty Anderson was second
with 35 stable ford points and for Neil Harvey was the pressure to high on the last hole with no score. He was third with 34 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Stan Rees and Dave Smith. On Thursday 14th February was our venue King’s Naga. The course was not in good condition with too long grass on the fairways and slow greens. We had nice weather sun with clouds and not too much wind. We could feel that the winter is leaving, because it is getting much warmer. We were
lucky with a nice breeze. Willem Lasonder was in good form and won with 39 stable ford points. Second was Paddy Devereux with 33 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were a problem today. Only on the 4th Par-3 shot Jonathan Pratt on the green. Siam Country Resort Accommodation - Restaurant - Bar Siam Country Road, Soi Polo 1, 39 Moo 9 Pong, Banglamung. 33 points! Richard Kubicki (10) held on to take second with his 30 points. The best nine in that flight went to Landis Brooks with 14 points. B-Flight Tiger Tees (14-29): Tom Herrington (14) took his flight honors with a long hitting 32 points and was 2nd overall in the Tiger Tee Challenge, followed by Andre Van Dyk (17) with 29. Yes, it was long! Fred Tam had the best nonwinning nine hole score with 15 points. C-Flight (21-24): Carole Kubicki (23) bounced back after losing a record 4 countbacks over the last 2 games, easily taking her flight with an excellent 35 points. Mick Coghlan (29) won 2nd with his distant 29 points, but it was enough. The best nine score for this flight went to Joe Sparwirth with 17. D-Flight (25+): Con Carmody (26) conquered his flight a fine 33 points, just ahead of Graham Buckingham (25) with 32. Best nine here went to Barry Elphick with 14. Prizes for flight winners was also something new, with each given a game show choice of “take the envelope or the bag”? Some agonized quite a while over the decision, and great fun was had by all. Our next Challenge will be Front Tee Friday playing off the whites at Pleasant Valley in March.

168th PSC MONTHLY TOURNAMENT
The PSC Season Opener on Valentine’s Day was a 4 persons Scramble held on the South and East nines at Plutaluang on Thursday 14th Feb. 84 players signed up to play but unfortunately due to work commitments and illness, the field was reduced to 76, which was still a very satisfactory turnout. The course was in fairly good condition, although the fairways were a bit dry and hard in places, with quite a bit of run for a change but that is to be expected at this time of the year. The tees and greens were also very acceptable. Check In was smooth, with Tim and Nigel taking care of PSC reception and of course the Navy staff; we were all away on schedule without any fuss thanks to not only the course staff but also the excellent co-operation of the players with Paul taking care of the South Course start and Jack on the East Course. A couple of groups turned up at the wrong start but they could hardly be to blame as one or two of the caddies did not seem to know which was South and which was East. Talking of which, standing on the first hole on East looking straight
at the sun pointing down the fairway; that’s North said one of the players, not in this hemisphere it isn’t, Jack replied; so I know where you are from! By all reports and looking at the scores, the East Course was generally tougher than South but the South was still a good test of golf. The dual venue presentation did not go as smoothly as the test transmissions; the Kull bar being treated to a view of Eddie Beilby’s legs instead of Jack; due to the camera deciding to change from back to front but the principal, with a little more practice, will work towards helping this great Pattaya/Darkside divide. Our thanks to the Kull Bar for hosting on the Darkside and supplying a few free nibbles and to Peter, owner of the Classroom, for allowing us to use their stage and facilities and to both venues supplying cool refreshments at happy hour prices. Finally, my apologies for forgetting to invite all you golfers sitting outside at the Classroom but I was very conscious that Barry Upton was looking to set up all his equipment as he was live on stage immediately after and we were running almost 40 minutes
late. Result:1 st – Martin Cooke, Nicholas Townrow, Craig Maldon & Phil Stringer (Team H’cap 8.62) with a net score of 56.38 2nd – Russell Exley, Maurice Roberts, Pete Seil & Phil Davies (Team H’cap 4.00)) with a net score of 57.00 3 rd – Rolf Sjoberg, Lennart Olsson, Gerald Sweetman & Mikael Andersson (Team H’cap
6.28) with a net score of 57.72 4 th – Duangden Galer, Chop Daprakhon, Somchit Kanokhong & Rotjana Neal (Team H’cap 5.12) with a net score of 57.88 5th – Keith Allen, Richard Holt, Dave Stockman & Paul Hack (Team Handicap 4.83) with a net score of 58.17 The next PSC Tournament will be the Charity Classic Open on the 6th March at Khao Kheow, which is a 2 ball better ball event with
the first tee at 8.06am; followed by an evening buffet at the wonderful Thai Garden Resort, also featuring their live resident band. That should hopefully all kick off around 6 – 6.30pm, aiming for the presentation of prizes and raffle at about 8pm. THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
Every year, there’s an international TV program which has one of the biggest audiences of the year – worldwide! The Eurovision Song Contest is a bit like Marmite or Somtam, you either love it or hate it. The contest has been broadcast every year for over sixty years, since its inauguration in 1956, and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most watched non-sporting events, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 and 600 million internationally. Eurovision has also been broadcast outside Europe to several countries that do not compete, such as the USA and China. An exception was made in 2015, when Australia was allowed to compete as a guest entrant as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the event. It seems Aussies are massive fans of the event. There have been a number of Eurovision artists and groups whose careers were directly launched into the spotlight following their win. Notable examples were ABBA, who won the contest for Sweden in 1974 with their song “Waterloo”, and went on to become one of the most successful bands of all time, and the French
ISSUE 611 MARCH 2019
Canadian singer Cé l ine Dion, who won the contest for Switzerland in 1988 with “Ne partez pas sans moi”, which subsequently helped launch her international career. Not to mention Brotherhood Of Man… (ok..later). Ireland holds the record for the highest number of wins, having won the contest seven times—including four times in five years in ‘92, ‘93, ‘94 and ‘96. Sweden is second with six wins. France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom are joint third with
five wins. The United Kingdom holds the record for the highest number of runner-up placings, coming in second on no less than 15 occasions as of 2015. The last time the UK won it was
nearly 20 years ago with Katrina and her Waves singing ‘Love Shine A Light’. I myself have serious Eurovision credentials after being a member of Brotherhood Of Man who won in 1976 with the, to date, biggest ever selling winning song after topping the charts in 36 countries with ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ and being a finalist personally as a writer in the Song For Europe ‘83. I also musically directed 1982 winners Bucks Fizz for a short while. Also, I was invited to join as guest performers one night in a spoof Eurovision theatre show called ‘Eurobeat’. It was one of the funniest shows ever and my appearance as a UK judge was a memorable one. As far as the actual Eurovision, I love the spectacle of the event plus a chance to see how different countries approach the writing and presentation of their entries which is sometimes hilarious. It’s always fun to try to pick the winner. however, after the early 80s and the advent of ‘gimmicks’, arguably started by Bucks Fizz, the actual song was
not the most important ingredient to bring on a win. In the old days, it was a thumping ‘Boom A Bang’ style of song which titillated the senses of Europe, but in recent years it’s been lots of drums and dance rythums that have been the most successful. Love it or hate it, the contest is a great way for a songwriter to earn some quick money with numerous plays on TV worldwide which will bring in large amounts of performance royalties plus a successful performing artist can gain so much from the exposure. I learned from my Brotherhood of Man colleagues that the UK’s BBC TV producer, who was travelling to the Hague with them in ’76, stated that 2nd will do. Why? Because the winning country has to host the next years’ event costing far more than if the show is taken from another country’s broadcaster. However, with tactical and political voting by many countries, it’s probably never going to happen for the U.K. again. No matter, it will be fun to watch as always. Last year’s winner was Netta Barzilai from Israel and so, this year’s event will be held in Tel Aviv. ‘Mussel Tov’.
