When you enter it is a veritable oasis in the city of Pattaya. Set around one of the biggest resort pools in Pattaya, this buffet offers and incredibly variety of choices. By my count over 50 items of appetizers, main

courses, salads, soups and of course many more deserts to try. At just 499 Baht, it is a great value. Even better buy 6 get one free and old coupons still work!!! Plenty of choices for vegans as well. Every night offers a different buffet. Monday: Italian Buffet Tuesday: BBQ

Wednesday: Roasted Duck Thursday: German Buffet with Roasted Pig Friday: Asian Specialities Saturday: International Foods Sunday: Steaks and Skewers We visited on a Friday night and they were kind enough to add the roasted duck to the Asian specialties. So many choices from Korea, Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. The two white fish offerings had delicious sauces. The beef bulgogi and chicken rending side by side were quite tasty. Of course had the roasted duck as a soup as a rare treat. There were a variety of

pastas and veggies that were looking great but I had to save room for desert. Had pork tonktsu, red curry, seamed fish in saffron sauce, and of course Thai chili fish. After all this I paid a visit to the deserts selection. Two flavors of ice cream, strawberry and pear pies, chocolate cake but skipped the bother of making a crepe. They have a roving three piece band and when they visited our table all we could think of to ask for was elvis’ blue suede shoes and La Bamba. Credible job, YOU come bettered prepared for requests! Best value in Pattaya!

eral businesses would help financially to make these a reality. The club was shocked when over 800 students requested what most of

us would consider as needs not wants. Requests for shoes, uniforms, stationary and glasses began to flood in, with 73 students requesting glasses in the first 2 months of the project. In 2019 we already have 72 children requesting glasses and we still have another 6 local Thai school yet to assess the needs. The process involves asking the students and teachers to identify those who potentially need glasses. These children are then given a preliminary eye test using a simple eye chart by the Hand to Hand Foundation. These results are then passed onto Dr. Bu from Pattaya Optical who assesses which students need further examination. These children receive letters requesting their

parents to take them to the Pattaya Optical shop where a thorough examination is done by fully trained optometrists. Those students who would benefit from glasses are then placed on a list of needy students which is considered by the ‘Save A Child’s Eyes’ project. Each pair costs 700 baht which is approximately ¼ of the cost of the glasses. An evening of food, fun and entertainment was held at the Loft Pub in January where over 100 000 baht was raised to purchase glasses through the ‘Save a Child’s Eyes’ project. If you would like to know more about the project or contribute please contact Margie at handtohandpattaya@yahoo.com.

NEW BUSINESS SURGE New Business Registrations Surge as 2019 Begins The Director-General of the Department of Business Development, Mr Wuti Kraiweeraphan, revealed an extreme growth in new businesses for January in Thailand, compared to the previous month and the same month last year. Factors that Mr. Wuti accounted for this were investment promotion by the Thai government, expanding influence of

online trade, and increased need for logistics support. More New Business Registrations, Less Business Dissolutions In January 2019, 7,311 new companies were registered, compared to 4,102 in December 2018, up 78%. When compared to the 6,965 registrations in January 2018, the increase was 5%, but still significant overall. More importantly, the number of dissolutions decreased from 5,511 in

December 2018 to only 1,401 in January. The 75% decrease is a positive indication for the investment environment in Thailand. The EEC Leads in New Business Registrations Much of the increase in new businesses is located in the Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC, and

geoned beyond Bangkok, with a healthy chunk coming from foreign investment from Japan, Singapore, and China. Although these regions have seen elevated capital investment, doubling from the previous month, there has been an overall decrease countrywide. Nevertheless, registered capital is only one economic indicator, and it cannot be overshadowed by the rise in total businesses established across Thailand. Transportation and Logistics Move into the Top Three With the expansion of investment across the EEC and SEC, it makes sense that the top three sectors for new business registrations in

ing factor for the increase in these sectors. B-Accounting Can Support Your Business in Thailand With such an optimistic start to 2019, having more businesses operating in Thailand does mean increased competition among all players. So, the Department of Business Development predicts that the total number of business registrations in Thailand for 2019 will be about the same as 2018 at about 70,000. Nevertheless, this will not stop government investment promotion and incentives to encourage growth across all sectors, as there are many factors, globally and locally, that will affect whether a business is es-

Thailand were general construction, real estate, and transportation and logistics. Construction and real estate were already in the top two, but transportation and logistics enters the top three for the first time, bumping down restaurant and food service business registrations. Furthermore, the EEC itself saw mainly service, wholesale and retail trade, and production operations established, as well as warehousing and logistics businesses. Mr. Wuti explained that the growth of online business, which has led to a greater demand for such services, as a driv-

TRADEMARK IN THAILAND

When looking to submit an application to register a trademark we will always have the chance to check first if there are trademarks that are similar to ours. The registration officer at the Intellectual Property Department will check your trademark application to see if it is valid, this process can take up to but no more than one year if it is successful. A more realistic time frame is around three months

for approval; this can be hastened by sending our staff three days to a week to help check with the Intellectual Property Department. The way we do this is constantly trying to find similar trademarks focusing on the appropriate fields; for example if we are trying to register a trademark for a jewelry product, we will try to find other similar trademarks. But on our experience similar trademarks are

usually in unrelated fields of business and as such we can argue that as they are unrelated it should be approved. If our application is found to be the same or too similar to another trademark then the registration officer will order the application to be rejected as per section 12 of Thai Trademark Law. If we disagree with the verdict of the officer then we have the right to appeal the decision for up to thirty days, starting from the date that you receive the letter from the registry officer. Sometimes we find that the name we plan to register for our trademark is similar to the name of a type of trademark, for example having the brand name as Rolex and the type or model name as Viva Dolce. The trademark we are trying to register is only Viva Dolce and thus it is considered similar and can be rejected, what we must do is appeal and then explain to the officer the difference and how they are not the same which should en-

able it to be passed. Sometimes the wording on a trademark is considered a common word and you cannot register the trademark without allowing other parties to also use those words. An easy example is Pizza Hut, with both words considered common they have to give consent for other parties to use these words, which is why you will always see other names associated with pizza such as Pizza Company or Pizza Mania. Whenever you wish you to register a trademark

it is always best to check beforehand to ease the process, an easy way is to hire a lawyer to check for you if there are any similar trademarks. Don’t think that the process can be done easily and by anyone, you may have to wait a long time, many even years and then you may still not be successful and get the trademark papers in your hands granting you full ownership. LAWYER COMMENT: I recommend that for a service like this you should always use profession-

als please hire people that have experience in this filed as it requires knowledge of special laws. By doing this you will save yourself a lot of problems as well as a lot of time and money. This field of law requires specialist’s information and experience, by having that at your advantage you will not find yourself in the waiting list for long. If you have any questions of queries feel free to contact us. To contact the Lawyer please call: 08-9911-1199 or email: info@pattayapeople.com

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY PARADE Again this year the Irish community and the Father Ray Foundation supported by Pattaya City Hall and many other organizations and businesses organized the very popular “St. Patrick’s Day Parade” in Pattaya on St. Patrick’s Day Sunday 17. March. The Guest of honor was the Irish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand His Excellency Tony Cottee and Deputy Mayor Ronnakit Eakasing representing Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplome. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade started in 2011 by the Irish community, led by Mr. Derrick Kane, an Irish expat and a regular fixture in the Pattaya community. The goal has always been to showcase the Irish culture and have a good time doing it. Since the first year Father Ray

Foundation has been its’ partner spreading the Irish spirit, all for the good cause of helping the needy of Pattaya. All the proceeds from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade go towards caring for and edu-

cating over 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities. Each year the celebration grows, attracting more parade goers, floats, marching bands and crowds revelling in the

fun. Over the last 7 years, over 5.5 million baht has been raised for Father Ray Foundation. The Irish Society of Pattaya plans on making the coming year’s parades bigger and better than ever.

NEW MAN IN TOWN

This year we have several changes to the management of the Foundation, including a new President. Father Paul Sukhum will be taking on the position of President

of the Father Ray Foundation from Father Peter, who has been with us for the past eight years. Father Peter is not moving too far, he’s staying in Pattaya, and his new

office is just across the road. He will now be President of the Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities, overseeing all our projects which are help-

ing and supporting people with disabilities. There is also a new priest overseeing the children’s projects, the Children’s Home, the Children’s Village and the Day Care

Center. Father Prasit is his name, and we hope he is ready to be the father of several hundred children. All three priests have known each other for many years as they were

all classmates when they were young boys in the seminary. Welcome also to Father Thanu, who will be in charge of all the finances and accounts.

SOULED OUT The Pattaya Soul Club that was founded 8 years ago on 9. March again organized a wonderful evening with lots of “Northern Soul music” and all the tunes from the Motown era. The venue this time was the Miami Club on Pattaya Walking Street. A SUPER BREAD IS BORN! On Saturday, March 2, we attended the launch of the first organic and gluten-free bread available in Thailand! This Super bread is developed by HealtHut and it is made by the bakery of the Baraquda M Gallery by Sofitel. It is also on the terrace of the roof top bar of the hotel that the event was organized. HealtHut, founded by Pascal and Manee Deville, is a leading company in the field of nutrition. It offers health services and organic and natural products. By the time, HealtHut has also developed its own products range such as kefir drinks or healthy snacks. The gluten-free organic bread is the latest addition to the Healthut’s “Signature” range. According to Pascal, there is a real demand on the part of the public to obtain gluten-free products, without pesticides, whose origin is natural (nonGMO), but also to obtain products that contain more essential nutrients to the body. After the welcome drink, which

consisted of a cocktail of Superfood and water kefir, the guests were able to taste this bread in different ways such as with vegan cheese, kefir cheese, bruschetta, chocolate paste, etc. This bread is really delicious, dense and tender at the same time. A single slice provides close to 4g of fiber and 2g of protein! Other recipes were in the spotlight, such as chocolate protein balls, granola premium, chocolate fondue with fresh fruit, flaxseed chips, and of course probiotic drinks such as milk and water kefir. A lovely,

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:HEART SYMPTOMS YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE

Chest pain aren’t the only sign of heart trouble, see what an unusual fatigue, swollen feet, and even coughing might mean- Dr. Kamaljit Singh.

heart conditions could also be the culprit. Nausea and lack of appetite can also be signs of trouble with your ticker. · Sweating and Trouble

·Chest Pain: -This is the most common sign of a heart attack, but it’s not always a crushing, sudden pain. It could be more of an uncomfortable feeling — like squeezing or heaviness. You might mistake it for heartburn. It may last for more than a few minutes or go away and come back. ·Arm or Back Pain: - Men typically feel it in the left arm, but women may hurt in both. Your arms could feel heavy or “useless.” It could be a sign of angina or a heart attack. Pain may start in your chest, then move to your upper or lower back. Be suspicious if the pain comes out of nowhere or wakes you up at night and doesn’t seem linked to a particular joint or muscle. ·Neck or Jaw Pain: -You can feel pain above the shoulders when you’re having a heart attack. Your lower jaw on one or both sides may hurt or feel tight. Your neck may ache, or you could have a choking or burning feeling in your throat. ·Unusual Fatigue: -Everybody’s busy, so it’s normal to feel tired once in a while. But it’s a red flag for heart attack if you suddenly get wiped out at times you usually wouldn’t. Maybe you’re extra worn out after your typical exercise routine or you’re exhausted just walking to the bathroom. You also might feel drained but still find it hard to sleep. ·Fainting and Nausea: -You may feel like you’re going to pass out. Fainting happens when your blood pressure is low and your heart isn’t pumping the right amount of oxygen to your brain. It might be because you’re overheating, but

Breathing: -If you’re having a heart attack, you may break out in a sweat even if you’re not pushing yourself hard. You could feel cold and clammy. You may be short of breath, like you’ve run a marathon, even if you haven’t moved off your couch. When you lie down, it may be even harder to breathe. ·Coughing and Wheezing: Shortness of breath with a regular cough and wheeze can be signs of heart failure. That’s when your heart doesn’t pump well enough to supply your body with all the blood and oxygen it needs. When you have heart failure, blood and fluids can back up into your lungs. You may have a hard time breathing or hear a rattling sound when you inhale. You might cough up pinkish mucus. ·Swelling: -You could have it in your feet, ankles, legs, or stom-

ISSUE 612  APRIL 2019

ach if you have heart failure. You may notice that your shoes feel tight. As blood flow out of your heart slows down, blood going back to it through the veins can back up. That causes fluid to collect in spots that it shouldn’t. Your kidneys can’t get rid of water and salt, which leads to more swelling. · Trouble Getting Around: When you have heart failure, your body moves blood and the oxygen it carries away from areas that aren’t as important, like your limbs, and sends it to the brain and heart. That makes moving around harder. Regular activities, like walking the dog or going up and down stairs, may be hard to do. As your heart gets weaker, simply getting dressed or walking across the room can tire you out. ·Rapid Heart Rate: -With heart failure, your ticker may beat fast to make up for its lack of pumping power. You may feel like your heart is racing. ·Irregular Heartbeat: -A heart rhythm disorder like atrial fibrillation (A Fib) can cause your ticker to beat fast and out of sync. Some people describe the feeling as a flutter or like a fish is flopping around inside their chest. ·Loud Snoring: -If it’s happening every night, you could have sleep apnea. That’s a condition which causes pauses in your breathing while you sleep. It’s

linked to atrial fibrillation and may raise your risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. If you don’t get treatment for your sleep apnea, you may have a higher chance of life-threatening heart trouble. ·Erectile Dysfunction (ED): -If you have this problem often, it could be a sign that you have heart disease. Blood vessels in your penis may be clogged with plaque, just like vessels around your heart can get blocked. Without good

blood flow, it’s hard to get and keep an erection. Talk to your doctor if you have ED to figure out what’s going on. · When to Get Emergency Help: · Get medical help right away if you think that you or someone you’re with has any of the symptoms of a heart attack. Quick treatment can cut down the chances of damage to your heart. Call Emergency Help if you have: i. Pain, pressure, or squeezing in

your chest ii. Pain or discomfort that spreads to your shoulders, back, neck, or arms iii. Shortness of breath iv. Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting v. EXPAT TIPS : ADVICE-PASSPORT RENEWAL PASSPORT VALIDITY REQUIREMENTS FOR BRITISH CITIZENS ENTERING THAILAND

Life as an expat in Thailand can be a lot of fun and mostly enjoyable, until you forget to do something important such as renewing your passport in plenty of time. These days most passports are valid for 10 years so it is understandable how people often forget to renew but when living in a foreign country, it is imperative that you don’t forget or you could have a big and expensive problem. If you live in Thailand and don’t travel often, the expiry date on your passport can easily slip your mind and you can find yourself with just a very short time left or worst case scenario you could be here in Thailand with an expired passport. There are a few key reminders which should help to jog your memory. For example Immigration will not allow you to renew your visa past your current passport expiry date. A lot of expats who are planning to live permanently in Thailand will

renew their passport not long before leaving their home country, so if your time here is approaching 8 or 9 years be sure to check

your passport expiry date. Every time you book a trip anywhere or need a copy of your passport for some reason don’t forget to check the expiry date. Time has a habit of running away with us and it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Why you need to renew your passport early #1 There are many countries which will not allow you to enter if your passport has less than 6 months validity. #2 You may face issues renewing your Thai visa if you have less than a year remaining on your current

passport. #3 Peak times such as the approach to summer holidays can often cause delays in passport renewal times and you don’t want to be stuck waiting if you really need your passport. #4 Peace of mind - knowing there is only a few months left on your passport is a worry which can easily be avoided by taking the initiative to renew when there is at least a year left. Another concern which expats often forget is how many pages remain in their passport. Don’t let your remaining pages get down to just 2 or 3, in case you need to make an urgent trip. A re-entry permit and an exit stamp can easily eat up 2 pages of your passport. And last but not least always keep an up to date copy of your passport with your most recent visa stamp and 90 day report in case of losing your passport. If you are a British citizen in Thailand, Key Visa can help you with renewing your passport or replacing a lost passport.

GETTING A TOURIST VISA FOR YOUR THAI PARTNER TO VISIT YOUR HOME COUNTRY

collecting your documentary evidence now. One of the main criteria that the entry clearance will look for is proof of a genuine relationship, so prepare as many documents to help with this as you can.

It is fast approaching the time of year when we start thinking about Christmas and spending time with our nearest and dearest. Many expats in Thailand choose to head home for the holidays

and plan to take their partners with them. If you are planning to take your Thai partner back to your home country for a visit within the next few months then you need to start

by email info@keyvisathailand.com for information on how to do this. If you are in another country and looking to come back to Thailand t h e n your options a r e slightly different. If you are not in the UK then you will either need to renew your British passport in the country you are already in or return to the UK and renew it there. If you are renewing your passport in the UK, there are two different fast track options. You can use the 1 week fast track service by calling and booking an appointment at a passport office then taking your completed renewal form and documentation along to an appointment. This option is available for both adult and child renewals. Or you can use the premium 1 day renewal service which can be booked and paid for online. The

earliest you can get an appointment is 2 days after you book online and you will get your passport at your appointment. You can only use the premium 1

call/text message proof of contact. If you have a contract phone in Thailand then your provider may be able to ask your telephone provider for an itemised bill. If you use Facebook Messenger or Whatsapp or LINE app to contact your partner then you can check the information on our website for details of how to download the https:// messages www.keyvisathailand.com/howto-prove-your-relationship/ Your partner should also supply details of any land or business he/ she owns in Thailand or if they have a regular job confirmation from their employer that their job

will be kept open for them on their return. If you are living together in Thailand it may be slightly easier to convince the entry clearance officer of intent to return but this is not always the case so make sure that you have enough documentary proof also. If you are living overseas and your partner is living in Thailand, then you will need to provide evidence of your previous meetings and contact when you are overseas. Again, you can use the information on our website to help to prove that you are in a genuine relationship. If you met your partner online,

then the situation is more complicated and we recommend that you contact the Key Visa office for advice. Spending Christmas or any time of year back in your home country with your Thai partner is a great way to grow your relationship, whether or not you intend to live there full time. Being in a different country shows a different side of people’s characters which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. It is best to find out early how well your Thai partner copes with travelling and adapts to spending time in a different culture.

When you are travelling to another country most people think that as long as their passport is valid for the duration of the trip then this should be sufficient. But with many countries this is not the case. Thailand for one, requires that you have at least six months remaining on your current passport when you enter the country. This won’t be mentioned when you buy your ticket but you may not be allowed to board the plane in your home country and most likely won’t be allowed to enter Thailand if you have less than 6 months remaining on your current passport. If you find this out after you have bought your ticket but before you are due to travel then consider yourself fortunate to have bought some time. If you are already in Thailand and are planning to travel out and return then you will need to postpone your trip until after you have renewed your passport. Renewing a British passport in Thailand currently takes around 3 weeks and can be done from anywhere in Thailand without travelling to Bangkok. Simply contact Darren

BUNKER BOYS Monday, March 11th Greenwood B & C 1st Mike Lloyd (18) Net 68 2nd Ken Davidson (23) 70 3rd Robby Watts (8 ) Net 72 Team prize Raleigh Gosney & Ken Davidson 66 points Near pins Robby Watts, Geoff Parker X 2 Sports day pricing was the first nice surprise for the Bunker Boys today making the round less than one thousand baht green/caddie fee. The second surprise was to find such an excellent course deserted, we virtually had the place to ourselves so a nice casual round with no delays was had. The weather was hot and steamy so sunscreen and hydration were a priority. We were meant to play medal but for reason known only to Jimmy Carr we ended up playing three different games all at the same time, medal, stableford, and two ball multiplier, the big surprise was that some groups didn’t play sixes as well. Having promised to deliver on every occasion since he arrived Mike Lloyd finally did the business today taking first place with an excellent score of net sixty-eight. Mike has started well every time he played only to fade away, today he carried through all the way

to the end. Ken Davidson was second with net seventy, whilst Robby Watts rounded out the scoring with seventy-two. Raleigh Gosney and Ken Davidson took out the team multiplier with sixty-six points. Only three of the four near pins were won with Robby Watts taking one and Geoff Parker taking two. Today was the last game for our former leader Neil Carter who departs back to his native Canada on Wednesday to start a new life with wife Yaya and son Jack, we wish them all well and look forward to seeing them back in Thailand with a bunch of Canadian golfers sometime in the not too distant future. Wednesday, March 13th Khao Kheow B & C 1st Geoff Parker (16) 33 points 2nd Robby Watts (8) 33 points 3rd Keith Norman(13) 32 points Near pins Robby Watts, Michael Brett, and Mike Lloyd X 2 Having enjoyed a deserted course on Monday we found ourselves in a log jam today at Khao Kheow. Two other societies were out before us with one on each of the starting holes so nothing for it but to wait patiently till they had hit off and our turn eventually came. Despite being so busy the speed of play was surprisingly good with

no further hold-ups and the round completed in four hours. Once again the temperature was blisteringly hot, even a strong breeze, particularly on the C nine failed to moderate the temperature so fatigue became prevalent as the round progressed. As a consequence, the scoring was on the very low side with nobody registering a decent score. Geoff Parker and Robby Watts finished with thirty-three points each with Geoff taking first on countback. Keith Norman took third a point back as well as winning all three sixes in his group. Despite not living up to the high standard he set on Monday, Mike Lloyd managed two near pins with Robby Watts and Michael Brett taking the remaining two. The island hole proved less of a problem than normal today with just about everyone managing to hit the putting surface. Overall the greens were very slippery today with few managing to hold approach shots on the putting surface and many failing to come to terms with the speed, three puts were the order of the day. Friday, March 15th Bangpakong Riverside Country Club. 1st Keith Norman (13) 39 points 2nd Geoff Parker (16) 38 points 3rd Keith Smithson (30) 35 points Near pins, Keith Smithson, Mike Lloyd, and Keith Norman X 2. Another windy day for our last game of the week at Bangpakong Riverside Country Club. As expected for low season the pace of play was fine except on a few occasions golfers had to wait for caddies to arrive at their ball. As the grass is spongy caddies understandably use the cart paths to go from one shot to the next which slows play a quite a bit and frustrates players, today the caddies seemed particularly slow which was a surprise at this course as they are normally of a high standard. It seems the new

rules changes designed to speed up play are not having the desired effect. Keith Norman continues to perform with great consistency taking first place once again with a fine round of thirty-nine. Keith had a red hot putter today and knocked them from all distances proving again if there was ever

any doubt about it if you cant put you can’t win at golf. He also won all three sixes in his group for the second day running. Geoff Parker is also now starting to play like the golfer we know he is and took second place with thirty-eight points. Keith Smithson rounded out the winner’s circle with a score of thirty-five in third place.

Near pins went to Keith Smithson, Mike Lloyd and two to Keith Norman. Daryl Vernon has featured in the shot of the day on a few occasions, today was the opposite when he failed to make it to the ladies tee with his first drive. After a brief illness, John Hughes is rumored to make a return next week.

GROWLING SWAN STABLEFORD. SILKY OAK G.C. – 11th March, 2019. “You can Book this one up Steve Younger to good on the day.” Probably our lowest starting lineup ever! And I am not suggesting Morals I mean numbers, six yes 6 only! So off to Silky Oak we go could have taken a picnic lunch we had that much, and there were few others on the course that day as well. Such a spot on golf course it is such a shame as I believe that this course deserves better. Course was in great nick, as you would expect. Did not receive one complaint regarding the condition of the course. Fairways mowed and tidy, greens ran true and bunkers were clean and raked as

well. All in all the opportunity for some good scores one would think, or was it! With only the dirty half dozen we voted and played First past the post and were playing for the 6 novelties. TODAY’s WINNER from SILKY OAK. 1st Steve Younger NEAR THE PIN. 3 Steve Younger. 8 Casa Rifkin. 14 Casa Rifkin. 16 Steve Younger. LONG FIRST PUTT. 9 D-For. 18 Steve Younger. In the photo we have from L to R; today’s winner Steve Younger (centre) the Colonel (on the Left) and Peter Grey.. Back at the Swan we welcomed back Brendan Cope who we have not seen for a few weeks. And

no farewells as far as I was aware. If we ever forget you in the “Welcomes or Farewells it will be an oversight and not a deliberate move! D-For had a day off. The Golfers and Punters from The Growling Swan are thanked for the generous efforts! For serious golfing with a dash of fun and compulsory sledging, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086. “TAKE IT EASY HOLE IN ONE BONUS GOES TO B3000 THIS MONTH! GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!’

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Phil Still on A High On Monday 18th March, 2019 Bangpakong Riverside Golf Club welcomed the Pattaya Links Golf Society on Monday, 18th March when the group arrived to play a stableford competition in two flights, divided at eighteen and under. The weather was hot and, surprisingly for the course, the day started off still and very humid. The wind was to get up on the back nine however, and would cause problems, swirling around the flat riverside track. Conditions kept scores at a moderate level, with one exception, as did the fairways which were soft and the greens were more grainy than usual. In the second flight third place went to the elder statesman Barry Oats who finished on 35 points, one behind the leaders who were subjected to countback to decide the winner. John Chelo’s smile was broad as it was announced he had nudged Richard Dobson into second place.

In the top flight third place went to Chris Barker on countback with 37 points, Stu Thompson being the unlucky golfer to lose out. Derek Phillips took second with 38 points and Phil Davies was still on a “high” after the weekend which saw his beloved Wales win the Grand Slam in rugby on Saturday. He powered his way to forty-two points with very few putts, nailing everything within six to eight feet. Near pins went to Barry Horman (4), Darren Beavers (7), Pete Seil (13) and Richard Dobson (16). The best front nine (non winners) was recorded by Stu Thompson (19 points) and Connie Walsh took the award for the best back nine (non winners) with 20 points. At the other end of the leaderboard Barry Horman wore the “wig” yet again, a fine way to finish his stay, whilst a measly nine points on the back nine gave Masa Sugaya the “silly hat” award. The presentation ended with brandy all round as Dave Heyes celebrated his birthday in a most generous fashion and even the

day’s hero Mr Phil could not resist the spirit of the occasion as he indulged for a very rare time. It had been a magical couple of days for the winner of the Green Jacket. “A” Flight (0-18) 1st Place – Phil Davies (12 ) -42 pts 2nd Place – Derek Phillips (18) -38 pts 3rd Place – Chris Barker (11) - 37 pts c/back “B” Flight (19+) 1st Place – John Chelo (19) - 36 pts c/back 2nd Place – Richard Dobson (26) – 36 pts 3rd Place – Barry Oats (28) - 35 pts Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday, 19 March, 2019 Bangpakong Riverside Country Club David Bailey rips Bangpakong apart with 45 points. It’s still high season for golf, and a good crowd of players met at BJ’s Holiday Lodge before making the trek up the 7. Bangpakong Riverside was in typically great condition. The Tropical golfers rang up some good scores, despite breezy conditions, and fairways that didn’t yield much roll. David Bailey had the score of the day with a fine, 45 points. In Tuesday’s results, we had a

total field of 27 players, with sixteen winners, spread over four flights. The top spot in A flight (0 –12) went to Landis Brooks’ 38 points from his handicap of 5. Second went to Bill Steinman (12), also with 38 points, but losing on count back. Third was John Davis (12) with 37 points. Rob Brown had the top nine hole score among non placers with 20 points. In the B flight, (13 – 19) Alan Sullivan (14), was first with 41 points. Brian Parish (13), second with 37, and Andre Van Dyk (16), third with 32 points. Bob Britton had the top nine hole score with

19 points. In the C flight (20 - 24), David Bailey (23), was first with 45 points. Walter Baechli (22) was second with 38 and Graham Buckingham (23) claimed third with 36 points. Kae Dayton had the best nine score with 18 points. In the D flight (25 and up), Roy Dayton (28), was first with 38 points. Karen Brown (31) was second, with 33 points. Henry Wong (28), third with 32 points, on count back over Barry Elphick. Barry did, however, have the best nine hole score with 18 points. Congratulations to all the winners.

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT On Tuesday 12th March we went with 3 groups to Greenwood, where we played the B & C course. It was a beautiful day with a clear blue sky and a nice breeze. The course was as usual in good shape. The greens were a little bit slow, but fair. The fairways were good and dry, so we got some extra meters roll out. Dave Smith was in good form today. He played a solid round and won with 38 stable ford points. Second became Ian Waddell on his last round before going back to Qatar. He beats Willem Lasonder on the count back with 36 stable ford points. The par-3’s were a big problem today. Only 1 near pin for

Jonathan Pratt on the last par-3. Thursday 14th March was our venue Mountain Shadow. It was again a beautiful day with a clear blue sky, sun and a strong breeze. The course was in good condition, but already too dry on some spots. We had good scores today. Ty Anderson played a very consistent round and won with 40 stable ford points. He had some fabulous chip-ins into the hole and against the pin. He won with 40 stable ford points. Jonathan Pratt became second with 37 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Ty Anderson, Jonathan Pratt and Dave Smith (2x). Siam Country Resort Accom-

BILLABONG WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13TH GREEN VALLEY STABLEFORD There is one thing you can guarantee with Thai ladies, they will never miss an opportunity to celebrate something –or anything come to think about it –they are very good at it and that is what was happening when we returned to the Billabong for it was Miss Paer’s birthday today and we were assailed with a wall of excitement from the party in the ladies room. Unfortunately her happy day was not reflected in her golf today but she was not alone for the overall scores were

not overly impressive. Perhaps it was the strong breeze or furry greens. Miss Porn (20) occupied 4th place with 32 points pipped at the post by Miss Thip (15) having one point more for 3rd place. Miss Sasicha (21) had a mixed bag on the back nine not being able to match the 20 points she had on the front, missing out on 1st place by a whisker on 34 points the same score as Miss May (11) surprisingly having a double bogey on the 15th hole par 3 but a better back nine put her into 1st place. Three players in the men’s competition left the rest of the field well behind today all three on 37 points 3 points clear

36 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

of 4 th place Jeff North (10). Selwyn Wegner (14) had a great front nine with seven pars dropping shots on only 2 holes for 22 points but his ball decided not to co-operate after the turn and his 15 points was one short of Barry Copeskate (13) who had 21 points on the front nine but his 16 points had him in 2nd place. Fittingly, Lloyd Shuttleworth (4) who leaves for an extended trip and his last game for a while, recorded a gross 75 which included 11 pars and 2 birdies for 1st place. Only three 2s going to Sandy Chapo and 2 to Lloyd. William

CAFE KRONBORG AT PLUTALUANG 18TH MAR 2019 Cafe Kronborg played Plutaluang East and South on Monday 18th March, which we haven’t played for some time and it soon became apparent why West and North is the favoured of the two courses. The condition of the fairways was as expected, not good, not bad, but with some muddy tight lies depending where your ball finished. Some of the greens were having work done to them with unplayable areas which were unmarked. The rest of the putting surfaces were extremely tricky with the back 9 being a tad faster than the front. The grass is very grainy on these 18 and the slower 9 seemed to grab the ball and threw it off line if it wasn’t hit hard. A far cry from the true running greens of West and North. All that being said, the low season green fee was a bargain and somewhat made up for occasional rough area. Back in the clubhouse the scores were as expected, except for one

person who we think may have played a different 18 holes. Only he and he alone managed to beat his handicap with no-one else even close to matching theirs. There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 23 and the B flight 24 and above. The A Flight winner and master of East and South was Ty Anderson with an incredible 43 points, 24 of which coming on the front 9. This was a gross 77 off the stick, an exceptional day on an easy course, but nothing short of miraculous on these 18. Apparently his putter was glowing red when he came off the front nine. Second and third places were decided on countback with 2 mere mortals having 33 points, a full ten points behind Ty. Taking second place was Arne Max Pedersen with 18 points on the back and third was Richard Kubicki faltering on the back with 15 points. Arne once again scoring well and Richard showing signs of his swing changes starting to work. In B Flight the winner was Jan

Lovgreen with 33 points, another mortal persons’ score. Jan returning to the podium after unusually missing out last Thursday. Second was Kurt Sandgaard with 31 points, Kurt having his second 2nd placing in a row. In third place was Peter Hammond with 30 points. Peter being another podium regular this season, finding the magic touch after a tough season last year. As the group was smaller due to the imminent end of the season, there were no near pins or long putts today. R & CK A Flight (0-23) 1st Ty Anderson (12) 43 points 2nd Arne Max Pedersen (23) 33 points (Countback 18 points) 3rd Richard Kubicki (11) 33 points (Countback 15 points) B Flight (24 & Above) 1st Jan Lovgreen (24) 33 points 2nd Kurt Sandgaard (33) 31 points 3rd Peter Hammond (30) 30 points

Tim, Nigel and Ing from the PSC office were at the course early to prepare for registration of the 85 players. As usual the course was in fine condition, the weather hot – but dry, and with the very helpful club house staff we were all set for a good day. The tee-times ran reasonably smoothly with Tim, the starter on ‘B’ and Jack the starter on ‘A’ but perhaps we at the PSC did not make it clear enough, that A was the first and B was the tenth, we will correct that next time. The traffic from Pattaya was exceptionally slow causing a slight delay but it’s the “no shows” no phone-call, which can mess up a pairs event like this. Please, if you sign up to play and can’t make it, let us know as soon as possible, thanks! However, with a few players patience and co-operation, we got in all sorted and everyone away on time. The Golf Hub sponsored the near pin competition on the island B8 green, as well as providing us with 2 very able ladies who orches-

trated a “keep you ball on the green” fun game. If your ball did not go in the water, your ticket went into a raffle, drawn in the evening. If it did go in, you could have another go at a price! Great idea and very good for the charities. All the other par 3’s were also sponsored, two of them by Tyrone’s TPR Golf Academy at Siam Country Club. Other sponsors for the day include:- Chris Dodd, Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, Casa Pascal Restaurant, The Classroom, Walter Baechli, 4 golfers from The Kronberg, Diana Garden Resort, Roman Golf Shop, Avani Hotel, Sinco, The Sportsman Pub & Restaurant, Mediterranean Garden Resort and of course many of the local golf courses; including Khao Kheow, Phoenix Gold, Eastern Star, Soi Dao, Pattana, Pattaya Country Club and last but not least Angkor Golf in Siem Reap. The evening festivities started at 6pm, with the excellent choice of buffet food provided by the wonderful Thai Garden Resort. After most of the 85 guests had finished eating, the resident band moved away and Nigel called everyone to order and introduced the 2019 PSC Golf Chairman Jack Moseley. However, a surprise visitor to the evening was Peter Malhotra, the

PSC President and Jack passed the microphone to Peter for a few welcoming words. (He got in the picture though as any good publisher should!) Jack expressed his appreciation for those taking part today with a special mention of the many generous sponsors. He also thanked Tim, Nigel, Ing and all the PSC office staff, for all the good work they did in staging this event. He went also to welcome the Japanese contingent, ten of them, the many new faces to Pattaya & to Pattaya Sports Club and of course the long-standing members. from left:- Peter LeNoury, Jack and Eddie Beilby It was then back to Nigel to announce the winners: however, it was last year’s runners up, (definitely not new faces) who got over the line first by just one shot. After an indifferent but solid front nine, Eddie got his act together on the back half to produce his ‘A’ game, helping him and Peter post, not only the best score of the day (46 points) but also the first score of the day; first off on course A and round in under 4 hours! The full result as below:1. Eddie Beilby and Peter LeNoury 46 points 2. Fumio Kakegawa and Satosi Kawakami 45 points (CB)

3. Lance Nomeland and Brenton Shaw 45 points (CB6) 4. Ning Neal and Onsee Lakda 45 points 5. Karen and Robert Brown 44 points (CB) 6. Chop Daprakhon and Galer Duangden 44 points Unfortunately, the ‘near pin’ result is incomplete, as someone decided to ‘kamoy’ our pin markers. We were left with only one on B8 and none on A3, so those prizes will be carried over to our next

event at Bangpra. The near pins which remained were won by:On A5 Mikael Anderson & Albert Bruce On B3 Andy Spence & Ning Neal On B8 Noksa Amphai. The next PSC golf event is the annual Club Championship, to be held at Bangpra on 2nd and 4th April. The first round is medal (stroke-play) for all divisions before putting the leaders into a second day of medal and the remain-

der into a ‘plate’ competition, playing stableford, having had their first day’s score converted to points. The evening event, remains undecided, depending on numbers:either the Barracuda on The Mercure. Finally, thanks to you all for your support and also to the many who expressed their appreciation for a fine day.

RAIN NEVER STOPPED PLAY

It was the wettest day of the year so far when the boys at the Father Ray Children’s Home welcomed the under-16 football team

from Burapha Phatthanasert International School. Younger teams from the Home and the School had met previously

at a tournament where both teams, after losing several matches, were playing not to be named the worst performing team of the competition. No sooner had the whistle been blown to start the match when the rain started to pour, and the downpour continued until well after the match was over. There was a lot of talent on both sides, including one Burapha player who is a member of the Thailand national under-15 side. After two halves the final score was 7-6 to the visitors, but with the promise of a return match the boys from the Children’s Home are hoping that the next game will go in their favour.

THE ELECTRIC GUITAR – WELL, I NEVER KNEW!

The sexiest instrument on the planet, by far, is the Electric Guitar. It has been a massive part of popular music culture for many decades now and is such a versatile instrument, familiar to just about everyone. I, like most enthusiastic guitar players, have a large collection, some of which are there only to be looked at and admired. There is actually a formula for guitar players to decide how many guitars you actually need. This is… how many guitars you already have + 1. For my 49 years of playing all sorts and makes of electric guitar, the Gibson Les Paul and an almost overused Fender Stratocaster are my ‘go to’ favourites. However, until recently, I never knew that Leo Fender didn’t know how to play guitar. The inventor of the famous guitar brand, which includes the Telecaster and Stratocaster models (favored by Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, among many others), never learned how to play his own instrument. Fender began as an accountant with a knack for repairing radios, later turning that hobby into a full-time electronics operation. The highly versatile Tele-

caster, which he developed in 1950, became the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar. The Telecaster was originally named the Broadcaster but there was already a drum set with the same name. There was a period during which there was no name for the guitar and Fender produced guitars with no name on the headstock. These “Nocasaters” are

pretty valuable as they are prized collector items. George Delmetia Beauchamp is just as important as Leo Fender and Les Paul. His name may not ring a bell, but Beauchamp designed the first fully functional guitar pickup and secured a US patent for the electric guitar in 1937. The pickup, which converts string vibrations into amplifiable electrical signals, makes an electric guitar work. Without one, there is no electric guitar. Beauchamp was also a founder of the popular Rickenbacker guitar brand alongside his friend and business partner Adolph Rickenbacker. Rickenbackers were often seen in use by both John Lennon and George Harrison in the era of the Beatles, also a ‘go to’ guitar for the classic rock sound of bands such as the Who and The Byrds.

first rock record with guitar feedback. 1964’s ‘I Feel Fine’ has a sound at the start that was accidentally discovered by the band and put to use on the single, thanks to their open-minded producer George Martin. The highest price paid for an electric guitar at an auction was $959,500 in 2004 for Eric Clapton’s ‘Blackie’ Stratocaster. That is a lot of guitar lessons! The Fender factory keeps busy. They produce nearly 90,000 strings a day. This is about 20,000 miles per year which is enough to circle the globe. They also make about 950 guitar necks per day! Some years they produce over 250,000 guitars. Banjos, mandolins and violins are also made there.

In 1950, Leo Fender tested the strength and durability of the guitar necks by balancing the neck between two chairs and standing on it! Jimi Hendrix’s tombstone has a Fender Stratocaster carved into it. Les Paul was in a car accident in 1948 and he asked the doctor to set his arm permanently in a guitar playing position. Oh yes….the electric guitar has been an important part of most people’s lives over the last 60 years in one form or another. Long may it continue to be so.

Hawaii was key in the development of the electric guitar. There was a giant Hawaiian craze in the 1910s and 1920s, with a rise in

popularity of the island’s sounds and culture (as often seen in movies). Integral to Hawaiian music is the Hawaiian-style steel guitar, which most of early electric guitar development modeled itself after. The first electric guitar was made out of cast aluminum. Hitting the market in 1932, the A-25 was also called the “Frying Pan”. The Beatles made the very
