SANDBAR - BY THE SEA
Mark your calendar now!! Wednesday is Tapas night at Sandbar - By the Sea at the newly renovated Dong Tharn Beach. Great parking, sea breezes blowing right into the restaurant makes for a very pleasant environment. Get this… the whole buffet is priced at just 270 Baht! We were a party of four with Niels and his wife and my
ventional salads and fresh cut veggies made a good starting point. There was baked broccoli with abundant cheese, stuffed baked tomatoes, stuffed eggplant, as well as spiced baked potatoes. A variety of mains were offered from chicken satay, bite sized
choose from. Black forest and coconut crème won the day for me. Fresh fruits of watermelon, pineapple, papaya and mango for those trying to resist the cake. I am on a perpetual diet so I normally limit myself to just one plate at a buffet, but this time I lost
meat balls and chicken nuggets, even ham and cheese sandwiches. There was plenty of vegan choices to satisfy those in need as well. There was even deep dish pepperoni pizza offered! Of course, never being one to deny a cake couldn’t help but notice there were several to
count and had two plates. I got to enjoy the best Cappucino I have had in months as we enjoyed listening to a very good 3 person band. Very highly recommended for your Wenesday night out. Did I mention it was just 270 baht? By Nick Athens

SONGKRAN PATTAYA STYLE
Songkran is the Thai New Year. Songkran is 13. April every year, but the holiday period extends from 14 to 15 April. In 2019, the holiday was observed 12–16 April as 13. April fell on a Saturday. The word “Songkran” comes from a Sanskrit word for “astrological passage”, meaning transformation or change. The term was borrowed from Makar Sankranti, the name of a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart and with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia, in keeping with the Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar. In Thailand, New Year is now officially celebrated on 1. January, Songkran was the official New Year until 1888, when it was switched to a fixed date of 1. April.
Then in 1940, this date was shifted to 1. January. The traditional Thai New Year Songkran was transformed into a national
holiday. In Pattaya Songkran is officially celebrated on 19. April, but the whole city is literally transformed
to a water-war-zone by foreigners, who have misunderstood the true meaning of Songkran assisted by local Thais mostly from the bar staff who take this opportunity to get drunk and behave out of control, from 13. April until 19. April making many foreigners both locals and tourists leave the city and as such badly hurt the local economy. Over the years this truth has been presented to the local authorities and some measures from the police to stop the worst abuse has been applied. However the best solution would be to implement an only one day Songkran “celebration” under the motto: “Songkran is OK - but only for one day”. Pattaya People Media Group marked the Songkran with a “Rotnarm-dam-hua” ceremony in the office building keeping with Thai tradition.

STAYING SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS 2
In last week’s article we spoke a lot about traffic accidents here in Thailand and how they are usually handled, this week will be about the legal side of such incidents and their possible effects. Going on from our last article a traffic accident will result in two legal cases; one a civil case and the other a criminal one. The civil case is regarding all the damages incurred such as vehicle damage and any injuries to the other party that may have been inflicted. All of the costs of vehicle repairs and medical bills will have to be paid
ISSUE 613 MAY 2019
back to the other party by order of the court. They do not consider that this is innocent or guilty but will call it negligence and will order the party charged to pay for these things. If the other party has insurance then the insurance company will pay for the costs first and will then charge you later plus the interest. If the other party does not have insurance then they can appoint a lawyer to sue the party at fault directly for the damages to vehicle and any injuries. They will also have the chance to submit a
criminal case, either through the police, public prosecutor or directly from a lawyer under their employ. Here in Thailand cases like these will usually be compromised at the police station and also at the court. If you are at fault and you agree to pay for the damages incurred and the other party is happy with the sum of money offered then the case will be withdrawn out of the court system. As per our experience many foreigners will ask the same question “why do we have to compromise? It is not fair on us”, I think of it in another way. If you are the one who is negligent and at fault then it is a good chance to finish the case, rather than having to deal with a criminal charge you will have the chance to erase the record for good. I understand that Thai law is very different to many other countries laws especially those of the United States, UK or Australia, but you should also understand the situation of the driving and drivers here. The
majority of drivers don’t respect traffic laws and regulations; they don’t even protect themselves by wearing a safety helmet or seatbelts. When an accident occurs and there are other factors such the other driver not wearing a seatbelt, then even if you are the negligent part you will not be entirely at fault as those aspects are also factored in. Some causes of death may come from a botched
operation or a lethal infection resulting from bad antiseptic, but quite often people die from the condition of the road and not through human error only. When there are rules and laws, you should always pay close attention to ensure that you will not be at fault for anything if an accident occurs. These rules and regulations are for the safety of the public and also to guarantee that any injured or wronged party is prop-
erly compensated. But if you have the chance then there are ways to gain benefits from this system that will help you in the long run. Our firm is willing to answer every mail that you send to us, we love to give proper advice to anyone who needs it. If you have any questions or queries then please feel free to contact us. APRIL AT THE TEMPLE As the temperature rose and the country enjoyed the Songkran festivities there were many young Thai boys who spent their school holidays and the month of April at a local temple. It is a tradition that goes back many years, and generations of Thai boys and young men have spent time ordained as novice monks. Twenty boys from the Father Ray Children’s Village were ordained at their local temple, a beautiful building facing Lake Mabprachan. During their time at the temple the novice monks must follow strict rules. However, as they are so young they only have to follow ten rules, including no lying, not killing any living thing, wearing perfume or sleeping on a comfortable bed! But the most difficult rule which most boys find difficult to follow is not being allowed to eat past noon, which is not as easy as you may think.
EDUCATION IS EVERYTHING
Two people, one man and one young lady, one from Thailand and the other from Myanmar. They have never met each other, and are now unlikely to do so. They have very little in common, and yet they have both lived at and been educated by the Father Ray Foundation, and this week they both graduated. Boong has lived at the Father Ray Children’s Home since she was eleven years of age. Her story is common with many children who arrive at the Home; from a poor family, left in the care of a relative who eventually brought her to the charity in Nongprue. Thian came from Myanmar to study English at the Technological College for People with Disabilities. Contracting polio at an early age left him dependent on a wheelchair, but having a disability never stopped Thian thinking about his future. Boong studied Tourism at university in Chachoengsao and is now

working for a local cable TV company. Meanwhile Thian will be returning home to Myanmar and plans to work improving the lives of people with disabilities in his hometown. Any charity can open its doors and offer a bed and a meal to someone in need. But what they really need is the opportunity to be educated so that they can improve their own lives. This is what the Father Ray Foundation does. It has schools for blind children, those with Special Needs and the Technological College. There are currently twenty three residents from the Children’s Home and Children’s Village studying at university, while a further thirty four have received scholarships to a private fee paying school; costing the Foundation not a single baht.

STRETCHING FOR A LIFETIME
– the benefits of stretching after spinal fusion surgery, chronic low back pain, or back surgery.
061 130 8550 Supine Lumbar Flexion is the right choice after your low back surgery. You should start with gentle back flexion daily exercises from your doctor or physical therapist. Start as soon as you feel well enough to move and after the healing process has occurred. Back flexion exercises can help safely stretch your low back muscles. They can also be used to gently stretch the scar tissue in your low back from the surgical If you suffer from chronic low back pain or have had back surgery, start by walking (the lowest impact for weight) with intensive, but guided stretching. This helps to improve blood flow throughout your body, will bring in oxygen and nutrients o your spinal muscles and tissues as they heal after surgery, Walking with guided daily stretching or (bi-weekly intensive stretching) also helps to improve your cardiovascular health, keeping your heart and lungs Walking is a great low-impact exercise because it
avoids unwanted motion to the spine and actually aides in bone fusion (growth). So yes, you can still be a very active person after spinal fusion surgery! You should know though, that your spine may feel stiffer after your surgery and even after your fusion heals. 5 of the most important benefits of stretching are: Reduced muscle tension, Increased range of movement in the joints, enhanced muscular coordination, improves your posture, reduce stress and body aches. Stretching is the deliberate lengthening of muscles in order to increase muscle flexibility and joint range of motion. Stretching activities are an important part of any exercise or rehabilitation program. They help warm the body up prior to activity, thus decreasing the risk of injury as well as muscle soreness. NOT JUST A NUMBER Thailand has, apparently, one of the highest rates of road deaths in the world. According to WHO, the World Health Organization, there are more than 24,000 road deaths in Thailand each year, or sixty six each day, and 48 of these deaths are a result of accidents involving motorbikes. Each year as we near Songkran the table showing the number of deaths, injuries, and accidents is printed in national newspapers and on social media. But to most readers these are just numbers that have no affect on our daily lives. And then one day you receive news and the statistics become a reality. Early one recent morning we received the news that one young man from the Father Ray Children’s Home had been involved in a fatal road accident.
Traveling along Thepprasit Road, riding a motorbike with his girlfriend sitting behind him, they were hit by a speeding motorbike, coming down the wrong side of the road and the Korean driver was drunk, several times over the legal alcohol limit. When the news reached the Children’s Home there was disbelief. No one wanted to belief the news, nineteen year old Pam was part of the family, even though he had left one year earlier to go and work. But you have to believe it, no one jokes about things like that, you just wish it wasn’t true. He was seven years of age when he first came to Pattaya with his two elder brothers. Their mother had recently died, and their father was unable to give his boys what they needed so he brought them to Pattaya, and then he himself died a few months later
For eleven years Pam lived at the Children’s Home, and although he had two brothers and his parents were dead, he was part of a bigger family and there were many adults he called mum and dad. That family came back together at Wat Sutthiwat temple in Nongprue. Friends and former residents of the Home, some who traveled from all over the country to be together and say farewell to their brother. No longer are the figures and statistics just a number, one of those numbers is Pam. Nineteen years of age, a life ended too early. Sixty six deaths a day, and yet you just never know how close to home any of them will be.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH MODERN WHEAT? ucts, all my problems has disappeared instantly. So I thought maybe I got coeliac disease, but my health check proved that I don’t have any problem with gluten. Then, I discovered the main cause was not gluten itself but what we call “Modern Wheat”.
For 10,000 years, we cultivated wheat, stored it, milled it and consumed it. The system worked, and it nourished civilization. Then, in the industrial era, we changed things.
How an ancient food staple became toxic junk food Once we’ve launched our Organic Gluten Free Bread recently, some of our members asked me “What’s wrong with modern wheat?” I effectively noticed than
since I leave in Thailand I got many digestive issues without finding the cause. I never thought the problem can be my regular consumption of bread, pasta or pizza, as I used to eat them for 40 years in Europe! But when I stopped to eat wheat flour prod-
First we invented mechanical technologies to turn wheat into barren white flour. Then, we invented chemical and genetic technologies to make it resistant to pests, drought and blight and easier to harvest, dramatically increasing yield per acre. And, while we were tweaking genetics, we also figured out how to increase glutens for better “baking properties” (fluffier results). Put another way:
We have mutant seeds, grown in synthetic soil, bathed in chemicals. They’re deconstructed, pulverized to fine dust, bleached and chemically treated to create a barren industrial filler that no other creature on the planet will eat. And we wonder why it might be making us sick?
Sadly, it’s not easy. The reality for the health-conscious consumer is that almost all supermarket flour is made from industrial modern wheat, and almost all of it is made with industrial processing. Many people think “I just need to buy the healthy “whole wheat” flour. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. “whole wheat” is nothing more than white flour with some bran added back in. It’s processed on the same mills, in the same way. And other than that extra bit of fibre, it’s the same barren industrial filler. There’s nothing “whole” about it.
Most whole grain products have actually been pulverized into very fine flour, which tends to raise blood sugars rapidly and can cause all sorts of problems down t h e line.
3 ) Wheat c o n tains s u b stances that “steal” nutrients from the body
brain, such as schizophrenia, cerebellar ataxia, autism and epilepsy.
5) Wheat may be addictive The digestive products of gluten may be able to stimulate opioid receptors and contribute to addiction. However, this needs to be studied more before we can make any conclusions.
6) Whole wheat drastically raises small, dense LDL cholesterol Elevated levels of LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol are associated with a greater risk of heart disease.
Wheat contains a substance called phytic acid, which can reduce absorption of important minerals. It may also cause people to burn through their Vitamin D
So, what can we do about it?
There is mounting evidence that a significant percentage of the population may be “sensitive” to gluten. Gluten sensitivity can cause various adverse effects.
stores faster, contributing to deficiency.
2) Wheat spikes blood sugar rapidly
Being sensitive to gluten is associated with many disorders of the
available, such as coconut, quinoa, buckwheat, flaxseed flours… Most of them contains even more nutrients than wheat and are totally safe. Unfortunately, you’ll have to make it by yourself as it is very difficult to find wheat free products in Thailand. Today, we have this “Super Bread” that contains gluten free flour only, no yeast and no egg in the recipe. If you like noodles, you can also use the “Pad Thai”, made with rice flour. Unfortunately, if you like pizza, it will be a challenge for you to find wheat free pizza…
Fortunately there are many alternative to wheat, thanks to these non-harmful and gluten free flour
Here are 6 potential problems with whole wheat.
1) Wheat is loaded with gluten
4) Wheat consumption is associated with several brain diseases

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:WHAT YOUR FEET SAYS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH?
Cold feet, misshapen nails, swelling, and numbness can be warning signs of condition that requires treatment. Here is what to watch for and when to call a doctor-Dr.Kamaljit Singh.
ally don’t lead to other health concerns. Raynaud’s may also be related to rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s disease, or thyroid problems. ·Heel Pain: -The most common
by heart disease, liver and digestive disorders, or certain infections. Sometimes, clubbing runs in families without any underlying disease. Swollen Feet ·This is usually a temporary nui-
·Cold Feet, Many Culprits: -If your toes are always cold, one reason could be poor blood flow — a circulatory problem sometimes linked to smoking, high blood pressure, or heart disease. The nerve damage of uncontrolled diabetes can also make your feet feel cold. Other possible causes include hypothyroidism and anemia. A doctor can look for any underlying problems — or let you know that you simply have cold feet. · Foot Pain: -When feet ache after a long day, you might just curse your shoes. After all, eight out of 10 women say their shoes hurt. But pain that’s not due to sky-high heels may come from a stress fracture, a small crack in a bone. One possible cause: Exercise that was too intense, particularly high-impact sports like basketball and distance running. Also, weakened bones due to osteoporosis increase the risk. ·Red, White, and Blue Toes: -Raynaud’s disease can cause toes to turn white, then bluish, and then redden again and return to their natural tone. The cause is a sudden narrowing of the arteries, called vasospasms. Stress or changes in temperature can trigger vasospasms, which usu-
cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, inflammation where this long ligament attaches to the heel bone. The pain may be sharpest when you first wake up and put pressure on the foot. Arthritis, excessive exercise, and poorly fitting shoes also can cause heel pain, as can tendonitis. Less common causes include a bone spur on the bottom of the heel, a bone infection, tumor, or fracture. ·Dragging Your Feet: -Sometimes the first sign of a problem is a change in the way you walk — a wider gait or slight foot dragging. The cause may be the slow loss of normal sensation in your feet, brought on by peripheral nerve damage. About 30% of these cases are linked to diabetes. Nerve damage also can be due to infection, vitamin deficiency, and alcoholism. In many cases, no one knows what caused the nerve damage. Other possible causes for foot dragging include problems with the brain, spinal cord, or muscles. ·Clubbed Toes: -In clubbing, the shape of the toes (and often the fingers) changes. The nails are more rounded on top and curve downward. Lung disease is the most common underlying cause, but it also can be caused
sance caused by standing too long or a long flight — especially if you are pregnant. In contrast, feet that stay swollen can be a sign of a serious medical condition. The cause may be poor circulation, a problem with the lymphatic system, or a blood clot. A kidney disorder or underactive thyroid can also cause swelling. If you have persistent swelling of your feet, see a physician. ·Swollen Feet: -This is usually a temporary nuisance caused by standing too long or a long flight — especially if you are pregnant. ·Burning Feet: -A burning sensation in the feet is common among diabetics with peripheral nerve damage. It can also be caused by a vitamin B deficiency, athlete’s foot, chronic kidney disease, poor circulation in the legs and feet (peripheral arterial disease), or hypothyroidism. ·Sores That Don’t Heal: -Foot
ISSUE 613 MAY 2019
sores that will not heal are a major warning sign for diabetes. Diabetes can impair sensation in the feet, circulation, and normal wound healing, so even a blister can become a troublesome wound. Those sores also are prone to infection. Diabetics should wash and dry their feet and check them for any wounds every day. Slow-healing of sores also can be caused by poor circulation from conditions such as peripheral artery disease. ·Pain in the Big Toe: -Gout is a notorious cause of sudden pain in the big toe joint, along with redness and swelling (seen here). Osteoarthritis is another culprit that causes pain and swelling. If the joint is rigid, it may be hallux rigidus, a complication of arthritis where a bone spur develops. Finally, turf toe is an ailment of athletes, particularly those who play on hard surfaces. It’s caused by an injury to ligaments surrounding the joint. · Pain in the Smaller Toes: -If you feel like you’re walking on a marble, or if pain burns in the ball of your foot and radiates to the toes, you may have Morton’s neuroma, a thickening of tissue around a nerve, usually between the third and fourth toes. It is eight to 10 times more common in women than in men. It is caused by injury or too much pressure on the toes. ·Itchy Feet: -Itchy, scaly skin may be athlete’s foot, a common fungal infection. A reaction to chemicals or skin care products — called contact dermatitis — can cause itching, too, along with redness and dry patches. If the skin on itchy feet is thick and pimplelike, it may be psoriasis, an overreaction of the immune system. Medicated creams can relieve the symptoms. ·Claw Toe: -This foot deformity can be caused by shoes that are tight and pinch your toes or by a disease that damages nerves, such as diabetes, alcoholism, or other neurological disorder. Your toes will be bent upward as they extend from the ball of the foot, then downward from the middle joint, resembling a claw. They may respond to stretching and
exercises of the toes or you may need special shoes or even surgery. · Foot Spasms: -A sudden, sharp pain in the foot is the hallmark of a muscle spasm or cramp, which can last many minutes. Overwork and muscle fatigue are common causes. Other causes include poor circulation, dehydration, or imbalances in potassium, magnesium, calcium, or vitamin D levels in the body. The changing hormone levels of pregnancy or thyroid disorders may play a role. If spasms are frequent or severe, see a doctor. Strengthening exercises can help with muscle fatigue. ·Dark Spot on the Foot: -We associate skin cancer with the sun, so we’re not as likely to check our feet for unusual spots. However, a melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, can develop in areas that are not regularly exposed to the sun. Melanoma can even appear beneath the nail, where it might look like a black spot. ·Yellow Toenails: -Your toenails tell a lot about your overall health. A fungal infection often causes thickened yellow toenails. Thick, yellow nails also can be a sign of an underlying disease, including lymphedema (swelling related to the lymphatic system), lung problems, psoriasis, or rheumatoid arthritis.
· Spoon-shaped Toenails: Sometimes an injury to the nail or frequent exposure to petroleum-based solvents can create a concave, spoon-like shape. However, iron deficiency also can cause this unusual shape. ·White Nails: -Injury to the nail or illness anywhere in the body can cause white areas in the nails. If part or all of a nail separates from the nail bed (shown here), it can appear white — and may be due to an injury, nail infection, or psoriasis. If the nail is intact and most of it is white, it can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition including liver disease, congestive heart failure, or kidney disease. Talk with your health care team about any concerns. ·Pitting of the Nails: - Pitting, or punctured-looking depressions in the surface of the nail, is caused by a disruption in the growth of the nail at the nail plate. It affects as many as half of people with psoriasis.

REGISTERING YOUR ADDRESS WITH RELOCATING BACK TO THE UK FROM THAILAND YOUR LOCAL IMMIGRATION OFFICE sponsibility lies with the property owner and they will be the one’s who get fined if it is not done. There is a choice of three documents which can be provided by the householder:
It is a requirement of law that is now being enforced at pretty much all immigration offices across the country that house owners must report the presence of any foreigners staying at the property at the local immigration office within 24 hours of their arrival. Some people think that filling in an arrival card on the plane is sufficient, however this is not the case. If you are staying at a hotel or guesthouse, don’t worry this will be taken care of for you. If you are staying in a short or long term rental property this will also usually be taken care of for you, however this should not be taken for granted. It is always better to check, if you are renting a prop-
erty via an agent you can check with them and they will most likely have a procedure already in place. But if you are renting privately from a landlord they may not be aware or may not be happy about having to do this as it has been known for some private landlords not to declare the rental income for tax purposes. On a side note, this can sometimes also be an issue if you require rental receipts. Technically, it is the householders responsibility to declare the foreigners residing at the property and ignorance of this law will not carry any weight with immigration officials. If you have a rental contract you can be classed as the householder and can register any foreigners residing at your address, however the primary re-
A copy of the householders’ house registration document or Tabian Baan A copy of the householders’ ID card A copy of a rental agreement Please note that these rules also apply if you have family or friends visiting from overseas. These rules have been applicable for a number of years and work along with the hotel act of 2005 but have only begun to be enforced recently. A fine of 2,000 THB is payable if you do not register aliens residing at your property within 24 hours of their arrival. The form required to notify foreigners residing at the property is form ™ 30, officially you are required to re-register if you leave the country and return, however many immigration offices do not enforce this if you are returning to the same address.
SECOND BRITISH PASSPORT A little known fact by British citizens is that in certain circumstances it is possible to obtain a second British passport if you can prove that you need to travel a lot and this is restricted by only holding one passport.
If you are a frequent traveller who often needs to apply for many different country visas (usually you need to be employed by an international company) then it is pos-
sible to obtain a second British passport.
The benefits of this are being able to travel on your second passport while your first passport is held at an embassy during a visa application. If you only have one passport then you cannot travel while your visa application is being processed. However, a second passport re-

However, there are times and circumstances when some expats decide to return ‘home’ for whatever reason. This can be due to financial constraints, when you are living on a fixed income fluctuations in the exchange rate can cause serious problems with monthly budgeting. Ill health is another concern for elderly expats who may find it difficult to get health insurance. If this is the case, you should be aware that you may not always be immediately entitled to health care in your home country upon arrival. Particularly in countries like the UK where healthcare is free, there are a number of restrictions for people who have been out of the country for longer than 6 months. If you are diagnosed with a serious illness, it is much better to consider heading home sooner rather than later as medically assisted travel can be very expensive and run into multiple tens of thousands of pounds. On a brighter note, some expats decide to head home due to inport, it will have a unique passport number, expiry date and photo. The application is treated as a first passport application so you need to supply proof of citizenship in the same way that you did when you applied for your very first passport. You will need to have your application verified by a British Citizen of good standing who has known you for at least two years and a letter on headed notepaper from your employer explaining why you need a second British passport.
creased employment opportunities in their motherland. Not everyone is able to easily find fruitful labour here in Thailand and even foreigners past retirement age can sometimes return home and find a new position fairly easily. If you are planning to head back to the UK from Thailand and wish to take your Thai partner with you, there are a number of regulations which need to be followed. Usually, you will need to have secured employment in the UK already or have an income of at least £18,600 per annum. If you don’t have this kind of income but you have savings of at least £62,500 this can be used instead. Most foreigners returning to the UK choose to go first and setup a home and find a job and then apply for their partners visa. As long as you meet the criteria for a UK settlement visa

Professor ANDY BARRACLOUGH: “Recent media reports have highlighted the very negative impacts of failure to vaccinate, with major outbreaks of measles and other ‘almost forgotten’ diseases, ranging from North America through Europe to New Zealand. But do these incidents of ‘childhood illnesses’ have any relevance for the mature Pattaya Expat? Surely at 50 years old and more, you have either already had all the childhood illnesses you are ever going to catch, or already been vaccinated against them? All this talk of the need for vaccinations in later life is just a con trick to extract ever more money from a cash strapped community? Unfortunately the situation is not that straightforward. Far less well reported in the media are the outbreaks of measles and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in older adults, giving lie to the label of ‘childhood diseases’; but amidst the media hype of new PEC Members Lucky Draw

PEC Meeting Programme – Fridays, 03rd-31st May 2019 vaccine developments for malaria, Dengue, and even claims for some forms of cancer – what is a sensible approach ? In a country where road traffic accidents rank amongst the leading causes of death – do I really need to be worried about vaccinations? Most high income country Health Authorities have now developed a ‘risk management’ approach to their recommendations of vaccinations for ‘Seniors’. Using such an approach – and always in consultation with a licensed medical practitioner to consider your specific health condition – it’s quite possible to make sensible – and very cost effective - decisions on an appropriate vaccination programme for later life which is largely based on your life style and activity level. Elephant Trekking in rural border areas, or bar hopping in Soi Buakhow - there is a suitable approach for each.” In his ‘day job’ Andy is the Emeritus Professor of Public Health, and Director of Training, at the Empower School of Health, a World Health Organization cooperating centre. For many years his main focus has been the effective management of pharmaceuticals and medical commodities, and the development of new medicines and vaccines for neglected tropical diseases. In his role as Professor at the Empower School of Health, he has authored and continues to present a number of World Health Organization Certified Courses, and in conjunction with Kent State University, USA, on-line post graduate courses in Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Quality Assurance of Medicines and Medical Commodities. He has conducted vaccinations from the foothills of Everest in Nepal, to the deepest diamond mines in Botswana, and witnessed firsthand, the devastating effects of lack of vaccination, and so holds very strident views on the value of vaccinations. More recently, he was part of the team undertaking Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Assessments, and Vaccine Provision in over 90 countries. As he approaches 70, he continues to believe that he can fully

Martin Sagesser returns with a ‘Club Members’ experience of cancer treatment & associated lifestyle tips. Martin had a form colon cancer needing a range of treatments in his native Switzerland including radiotherapy and with chemotherapy in tablet and liquid form. He will outline what to do if you experience unusual symptoms including acute tiredness, persistent diarrhea, headaches, unusual blood cell test results and pressure in the chest. He will also cover lifestyle and complimentary therapy tips for expats in recovery, Thai products, food supplements for improving blood circulation plus avoiding fats and sugars. Martin is a Swiss and German citizen, an electrical engineer who progressed to the world of Information Technology, attending the Software School of Switzerland in Berne. He honed skills in High Definition technology, working as a software engineer / programmer at Novartis (where he over-
saw some 8,000 work stations) and at UBS. Martin may be contacted at: swissnet24@usa.com Mobile: 098-921-1022 or 095-736-4968 Friday, 17 May Layla Aukes Acting in Thai Film & TV Productions Layla will discuss her experiences as a talent involved in Thai Film,
TV, print and billboard productions. She has been active in the industry in Los Angeles since 1975, and picked it up again here in Thailand after retirement in 2006. Layla has enjoyed cameos in such movies as ‘Hangover 2’, ‘I Am Fine’, and ‘Miss Saigon’. Layla will tell us about the steps involved for those interested to contact Casting Agents via her Facebook talent group, where the new film and TV project openings are posted. People get the impression that this is a very glamorous existence, but in fact, it is a lot of hard, long effort with modest monetary compensation, but plenty of social compensation! Layla finds many similarities between her previous career as a cabin crew member for airline KLM and being involved with movie and television commercial projects, as they are all short term commitments. Each flight is a quick adventure with a new group of people, and so is every movie production with a new cast and crew. Both involve waiting and waiting for the production to get going, then everyone disperses after completion, perhaps never to see each other again. Come to the Club on Friday 17th May to enjoy insights from Layla how to get involved as a mature expat in Thai TV commercials - plus film set stories which will entertain you. https://www.facebook.com/ groups/TalentThailand/ https://www.facebook.com/ lela.aukes/videos/ 10155357740382237/ Contact: Mobile: 086 984 9700 lelaaukes@gmail.com

Friday, 24 May Ernest Maude, Hong Kong
An economics graduate from Bristol, England, Andrew Eden first joined the Insurance industry then to Lloyds Bank. Given the opportunity of opening offshore financial services in the Channel Islands for Lloyds Bank International, he embraced the world of offshore financial services. His Lloyds Bank career peaked as Head Office Manager for Lloyds Expatriate, Black Horse Agencies & Forces Liaison (Pall Mall). Andrew was head-hunted to run the investment division of Friends Provident International based out of Hong Kong. 25 years ago he established Ernest Maude (which is his Mother’s & Father’s middle names) in Hong Kong and he has been specialising in wealth management and developing the use of property in particular as a way of improving capital growth and latterly increasing net income in retirement. As our PEC guest speaker and as Managing Director of Ernest Maude Co he writes “From our website (http:// www.ernestmaude.com/ index.html) you will see that we cover a multitude of disciplines which most expats need to consider at some point. I will be very happy to provide a brief overview on each topic and perhaps focus on ‘increasing retirement income using high yield investment property opportunities’ (not based in Thailand).” “We keep things simple and only use mainstream products, all of which are easily verifiable via the internet or through other professionals (such as our recommended qualified practicing lawyers and accountants). I know that there will be something of interest to all your members”. “One of the newer phrases to find its way into the vocabulary of today’s more progressive financial planners is ‘holistic financial planning’. As In the field of medicine, holistic is becoming important. So what does it mean and why now? Also is this newer type of all-inclusive financial planning something that you can benefit from? In broader terms, holistic financial planning identifies and takes into consideration the entirety of a client’s financial situation both present and on into the future. When the client receives completely inclusive or complete holistic advice, they are far better
able to make decisions that ensure that their total objectives are more realistically obtained. From Wills, Insurance to Pensions, Property, Investments, Taxation & Trusts, Ernest Maude can take you through this journey to help you integrate all these in such a way so as to maximise your returns without having to compromise at all on any of your security. BUNKER BOYS Wednesday, April 10th Greenwood B & C 1st Dave Stockman (8) 36 points 2nd Ross Schiffte (18) 35 points 3rd Jimmy Carr (18) 33 points Near pins Les Cobban, Ross Schiffte, & Michael Brett Today at Greenwood we were allocated the B and C nines and we found the course in the best condition ever, it was a credit to the management and ground staff. Fairways were freshly mown, bunkers were immaculately raked and greens ran true without being too fast. As we appeared to be the only ones on the course we got our round completed in a timely manner without anyone to hold us up and we managed to avoid the usual monsoon season afternoon storm which hit about fifteen minutes after we got in the clubhouse. Most courses are now seeing the benefit of recent rain so golfing conditions are at their best. Today we had two more departures with Ken Hopkins returning to the UK and Tony Robbins going on an extended holiday. Today we were pleased to welcome Dave Stockman to our ranks and he duly did a smash and grab taking first place with a round of thirty-six. Ross Schiffte took second place one adrift with Jimmy
Carr in third place on thirty-three points. Three of the four near pins were won with one each to Ross Schiffte, Les Cobban, and Michael Brett. Friday, April 12th Khao Kheow A & B 1st Ross Schiffte (18) 35 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (18) 35 points 3r Dave Ashman (21) 32 points Near pins Ross Schifte, Jimmy Carr, Dave Ashman, Steve Morrison. We were allocated A and B nine on a day that was too hot for Neil Griffin to indulge in a beer, on the front nine at least, he did, however, make up for it on the back nine. It was also a day when we used umbrellas to shade from the sun on the front nine and the rain on the back nine. Despite the sky being generally all blue one dark cloud appeared above us on the back nine and unloaded upon us requiring a twenty-minute stoppage in play. The course was busier than any we have been to lately and was in excellent condition. Apart from the rain, there were no other holdups in play. Scores were mediocre at best with nobody excelling. All four players in our second group visited the water on the A 7 hole. Geoff Parker is rumored to have visited parts of the course never before seen.
In a day of peculiar play, Neil Griffin in his last game, for now, used his driver on all the par threes regardless of length from tee to green. Dave Ashman won all three sixes in his group. Ross Schiffte claimed first place with a score of thirty-five points beating Jimmy Carr on countback, Dave Ashman took third with thirty-two points. In only his second game with us Australian Steve Morrison collected a near pin and enjoyed his time with the Bunker Boys, oue resident entertainment guru Jimmy may have had something to do with that. Ross Schiffte, Jimmy Carr and Dave Ashman took the other three near pins. Tuesday, April 16th Khao Yai Trip Forest Hills 1st Richard Fearby (2) 36 points 2nd Les Cobban (7) 34 points 3rd Barry Wellings (4) 33 points Near pins Barry Wellings, Richard Fearby, Ross Schiffte, Michael Brett One of the great joys of golf is away trips and the opportunity to play different courses and on the first day of our SongkranTrip to Khao Yai, we hit a beauty. Forest Hills also known as Sir James was a terrific layout with a different challenge on every hole. For the most part, the course was in fine condition but the greens which had recently been cored but not sanded were a real challenge, slow and bumpy and not mowed lately, it was like putting on flypaper and nobody seemed to be able to master the speed. The bunkers were also in need of attention, despite that the course presented an enjoyable experience for everybody, but the state of the greens and bunkers was reflected in the below average scoring. The one to handle the challenge best was a newbie to the Bunker Boys Richard Fearby who took the honors with Thirty-six points Second went to Les Cobban who always seems to be in the frame and another

newbie Barry Wellings took third with thirty-three points. Both our new players are very low handicap golfers and handled the conditions best apart from Les. Near pins also went to the newbies with Ross Schiffte and Michael Brett taking the other two. On the way back to Pak Chong we hadn’t factored in the heavy traffic southbound on the highway and no option to make a right turn. With all the U-turns closed due to a traffic contra-flow in operation, we had to drive about thirty kilometers south before we found an open Uturn so we could get back to Pak Chong, something to factor into planning our return trip. Wednesday, April 17th Khao Yai Country Club 1st Gerry Cooney (19) 40 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (18) 38 points 3rd Geoff Parker (15) 38 points Near pins Geoff Parker, Barry Wellings, and Michael Brett X 2. If we thought yesterday was good today was on another level, the course was in beautiful condition, fairways well grassed and lush, and greens that were much easier to putt on than yesterday with even roll and good speed. Everywhere you looked around the course the scenery was breathtaking. With a green and caddie fee of six hundred and fifty baht, it was remarkable value for a course of this quality. Our ranks were swelled today with the late arrival of Gerry Cooney and Stuart Brown so the competition for places was keener than ever and this was reflected in the scoring. Michael Brett on thirty-seven and Stuart Brown with thirty-eight didn’t even make it into the winner’s circle. After a couple of warm-up games with indifferent scores, Gerry Cooner stormed back to his best taking first place with a fine round of forty points. Jimmy Carr and Geoff Parker had to be separated on countback finishing second and third respectively on thirty-eight points. Near pins went to Barry Wellings and
Geoff Parker with Michael Brett taking a pair. Richard Fearby off a two handicap looked like taking the course apart with twenty-two points on the front nine only to unravel on the back with a couple of visits to the water. We did get a little rain on the seventeenth which only held us up for about ten minutes. Thursday, April 18th Kirimaya 1st Barry Wellings (4) 38 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (18) 36 points 3rd Les Cobban (7) 32 points Near pins Ross Schiffte, Barry Wellings X 3 Following the relatively wide open fairways of Khao Yai Country Club yesterday, today we had to contend with one of the most intimidating courses on our trip so far. There were a number of challenging carries, and anywhere off the fairway was big trouble, correct club selection was required at all times as well as being straight. Just to add a bit of extra spice to the game the wind was strong at times. For such a highly rated course it was in less than ideal condition, in particular, the greens were looking shabby and without attention soon they will deteriorate very quickly. Another Pattaya group were out ahead of us so we teed off on the tenth and were lucky to finish before a storm hit, it had been threatening for some time but luckily just when it seemed most menacing it moved away and we completed the round dry. Despite the difficulty of the course, some relished the challenge none more than our winner Barry Wellings with a great score of thirty-eight points. Barry also nailed three near pins all of which he converted into birdies. Jimmy Carr took second place with thirtysix points with Les Cobban in third on thirty-two. Ross Schiffte took the fourth near pin. Richard Fearby gave an exhibition of magnificent driving, extremely long and straight and was on just about every green
in regulation or less, but was once again was let down by some indifferent putting, not converting any and even throwing in a bogey or two. Had he putted like Barry he would have been well below scratch for the round. Friday, April 19th Bonanza 1st Les Cobban (7) 40 points 2nd Stuart Brown (10) 37 points 3rd Barry Wellings (4) 36 points Near pins Barry Wellings, Ross Schiffte, Richard Fearby, Les Cobban. Today we were due to play the Seve Ballesteros designed Mountain Creek course. This is a course viewed with great trepidation by many golfers, some have even vowed to never play it again, so when we heard that Bonanza was in great condition and we could secure a ten thirty tee off time we jumped at the opportunity. As it turned out the course was in fine condition except for the greens which were surprisingly slow even though they didn’t look that way. We had the course to ourselves so there was no pressure despite our lead group being particularly slow. At various times one or more from this group were offline and spent much time looking for balls. Another challenge was a lack of English by the caddies who were unable to communicate hidden hazards to players which contributed to the problem Les Cobban who had a good week finished it in fine style taking first place with forty points, Les also generously rang the bell back at the hotel, it’s not true what they say about Scotsmen, at least some of them. Stuart Brown in only his second game of the trip took second place with a solid thirty-seven points and Barry Wellings who also had a good week finished third with thirty-six. Near pins went to Ross Schiffte, Barry Wellings, Richard Fearby, and Les Cobban. Richard Fearby Barry Wellings

ISSUE 613 MAY 2019
LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Laem Chabang…C+A...Monday April 22,2019 Pete’s Green Jacket in Absentia Can a golf course be described as being in perfect condition? According to many of our twenty six players who teed off at Laem Chabang today, it was very near just that. The first two greens seemed to have had a sprinkling of sand recently, which resulted in them not being as smooth as the other sixteen which were perfect. The fairways are immaculate and easy to hit from, and the rough was not too much bother. As always check-in staff and starters are efficient and the special Monday price of 2059 bht all in made a great day for all. Scores today were much lower than at our last visit here. Maybe this had something to do with starting on the difficult, watery, C nine? The “A” flight provided the top scores with Pete Seil having an excellent round off his new handicap of 5 making 37 points to take the win and the “Green Jacket” for best score of the day. George Mueller is never very far
away from the placings and he, off his new handicap of 14, had an even round of 36 points, one ahead of Kevin LaBar who is becoming quite consistent of late. The “B” flight saw the successful return to Links of Masa Okada, whose 35 points held out another consistent player in Mike Tottenham on 34 points. Regular, and always welcome visitor to Links is the much travelled Walter Baechli, who took out third place with a handy 33 points. Near Pins: Nigel Harrison (C5), John Harrison (C8),Tip Briney (A2), Pete Seil (A7). “A” flight 1st Place - Pete Seil (5) - 37 pts 2nd Place - George Mueller (14 ) 36 pts 3rd Place - Kevin LaBar (12) - 35 pts “B”’ flight 1st Place - Masa Okada (23 ) - 35 pts 2nd Place – Mike Tottenham (18) 34 pts 3rd Place - Walter Baechli (20) 33 pts Best Front Nine ( non winners) – Derek Phillips – 17 pts
Best Back Nine ( non winners) Maurice Roberts – 19 pts c/back Maurice asked me to mention the weather on this day. It was Hot, Damn Hot, as it has been in Thailand for a couple of weeks now. All we ask is for some relief from this energy sapping heat. It was a race for the bottom, or the lowest scores, and good “ol” Tip Briney managed 4 points on the C nine enabling him to keep his favourite “silly hat”. Tip was beaten for “wig” for the overall lowest score by Stan Stewart, but it was close. Pete Seil didn’t make it back to the Bar for the photo, but we found one from an earlier Green Jacket win. The other photo is the dynamic duo, Tip Briney and Stan Stewart. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a day of golf.
TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Thursday, April 11, Greenwood CC – St Steve and Dave Smiling at Greenwood In our last outing before the Songkran break, the Tropical Golfers paid a visit to Greenwood CC. This is a popular stop on the tour, and twenty intrepid souls showed up for the challenge. Despite the heat most were planing to walk based on a confusing memo issued by Greenwood that most interpreted to mean only Caddies can drive carts – yet the golfer is still responsible for any damage.
When we got to the course we were greeted with a better worded notice that only the driver is responsible, and carts were on special for 200 bt. At that price and the heat, even hard core walkers were riding along.
the results were quite noticeable. Dave Cooper again won his flight with the high score of the day, and big hitting Steve Trulove took AFlight honors. Poor Paul Weatherley went from outright winner to third on countback by hitting the wrong ball on the 17th fairway. Don’t take the Caddies word for it! A-Flight (0-17): Steve Trulove (33), Andre Van Dyk (33), PAul Weatherley (33), Gerd Reidler (32). B-Flight (18+): Dave Cooper (44), Don Carmody (43), Barry Elphick (41), Roy Dayton (37)
ISSUE 613 MAY 2019
Assigned the B+C nines we were off right on time. The course was in its usually very good condition, with the better nod to the “B” side as “C” is weedy in spots. Greens were good. Experimenting with a two tee format, the A-Flight went off the yellow tees, while the B-Flight went off the whites, and
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Songkran week Many of our group left the city for Songkran or went back to their home country but the diehards stayed and played golf. On Tuesday 16th April we went to Pleasant Valley 2 groups. The course was in reasonable condition, with as always too many wet spots in the fairways. It was warm sunny day and we enjoyed the game. Paul Davies was again the man today. Last week he produced the second time a “40” and today 39 stable ford points were enough for the win. Second was Dave Smith with 37 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Paddy Devereux, Mike James and
Dave Smith. On Thursday 18th April was our venue Treasure Hill. The course was in very good condition with nice fairways and perfect teeboxes. But the course is always a challenge with all the trees on the fairways. We started with warm sunny weather, but after noon the weather changed and dark clouds came up. BILLABONG WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10TH GREEN VALLEY, STABLEFORD The rainy season decided to pay Pattaya a visit a little early this year flooding many areas causing chaos in town, but the rain did not travel as far as Rayong and Green Valley for the grass is in serious need of some refreshment for many areas are brown and bare of any grass. It might help if all the sprinkler heads were working as they were designed so to do. In the men’s competition Wayne Cotterell (13) had a good front nine with 20 points but a serious blip on the way home with only 4 points in 5 holes earned him only 15 points and 35
overall for 4th place. Something remarkable happened with Charlie (22) for he only had 11 points on the front nine. What happened on the 10th tee one can only guess for he had 6 pars thereafter and 25 points over the nine holes and 36 points for 3rdplace. The Billabong Champion, Auke Engelkes (12) can blame too many 1 pointers for his 37 points missing out on top spot by 1 point behind Jeff North who started with a birdie for 4 points followed by 2 others going out for 21 points and 38 in total to occupy 1st place. Many ladies were not in attendance today possibly travelling for Songkran but Miss Nu (16) won today with 32 points

with Miss Sasicha (21) in 2nd with 28 points. Only two 2s today going to Selwyn Wegner and Steve Wattons. William
GROWLING SWAN STABLEFORD. KHAO KHEOW G.C. – 11th April, 2019. “Viva LaFrance Patrick Poussier at the top of his game.” “TAKE IT EASY HOLE IN ONE BONUS GOES TO B4500 THIS MONTH!” With one late pull out we were traveling to Khao Kheow with seventeen golfers. A very popular golf course indeed. We have been trying to get on for the last few months but sad to say always booked out, and now that pricing is better it may be harder if crowds suddenly appear. So it’s off to K.K for what we would expect to be a good game of golf. Well after all is said and done there was not one complaint regarding the condition of the course, all were saying that it was in real good nick, Fairways mowed and tidy , greens ran true, but a little on the quick side. Bunkers were clean and raked as well. All in all the opportunity for some good scores one would think, or was it! Two buses and a couple of cars were enough to get us there, with few people on the course we did
not suffer any holdups at all. We were playing only the One Flight with all novelties in play. We attacked the course from the yellow tees and were playing courses A & B. It was to be Patrick Poussier that stole the show with his 43 points he certainly made the most of his day. Following two shots behind was Rod Weekes playing in his last game before heading back to Aust. Third past the post was ever green Steve Younger with Mark Stapleton and Paz needing to be separated by the count back system. It was Stapo that got the nod and taking 4th place with Paz getting 5th. WINNERS from KHAO KHEOW. 1st Patrick Poussier (27) 43 pts. 2nd Rod Weekes (19) 41 pts. 3rd Steve Younger (12) 36 pts. 4th Mark Stapleton (18) 34 pts. 5th Paz (18) 34 pts. NEAR THE PIN. A3 Jacpot. A5 Keith Buchanan. B3 Keith Buchanan. B8 Bill Steinmann. LONG FIRST PUTT. A9 Jackpot. B9 Travis Richards. In the photo we have today’s winner Patrick Poussier and Rod
Weekes. Back at the Swan we welcomed back Travis Richards, Noel Handley and JJ Harney, then our English contingent. Jag, Jus, Paz, Jack, Adz, Darsh & Dal. We then wished the English contingent a fond farewell also Rod Weekes is leaving us and heading back to Aussie. We wish you all safe travels and hope that we see yoy all again real soon. Alex set D-For from his chain to collect for the needy of Pattaya. We give thanks to those who choose to give. The Golfers and Punters from The Growling Swan are thanked for the generous efforts! PRIME MINISTER MESSAGE ON YOGA In his address to the gathering, Modi said yoga has emerged as a unifying force against “subversive elements” that are trying to divide society, “These elements create walls among societies and nations, affecting the people’s moral
while adding to the troubles in their already stressful lives,” he said. “It is in this scenario that yoga emerges as a factor that not only heals societies and nations but also bring them together.” The Prime Minister began his speech with a few words on Uttarakhand, which he hailed as “the land of the gods.” “It is a matter of great fortune that this yoga day function is being organized in the very land from where the Ganga originates, the land that attracted the likes of Adi Shankaracharya and Swami Vivekanand,” he said. He went on to assert that concerted celebrations of yoga have strengthened global ties. “The world has embraced yoga, and glimpses of this can be seen in that way the International Day of Yoga is being celebrated every year. From Tokyo to Toronto, from Stockholm to Sao Paulo, yoga has become a positive influence for millions.” he said.

ORCHESTRA PROTOCOL Being a big fan of orchestras and the amazing sound produced by so many individual instruments in strict harmony with each other, the element that always fascinates me is the discipline and etiquette that is essential for a top performance. For instance, it is impossible to be a left handed string player. You will never see a violin, viola, cello, or any bowed instrument played left handed. Why? This is because all the bows must point in the same direction to avoid clashing. Aha, you never thought of that did you? I recently spotted the lead violinist
of a Symphony Orchestra break a string. In an instant, he swapped instruments with the violinist next to him leaving them to try to play with three strings only. Protocol/ etiquette. There are many reasons why the way a pop or rock band playing together is far removed from the classical musician’s style although many a guitarist, drummer or vocalist could learn a lot from some of the do’s and don’ts that I’ve assembled here. For instance: Arrive in plenty of time, at least 15 minutes before rehearsals and learn your material thoroughly. Be kind to your neighbouring musician at all times Check with your stand partner that you’re both sitting comfortably and able to see the music clearly. Watch the section leader carefully for bowings, length of notes, style of bowing, etc.. If you have a question, you ask the section leader and not raise your hand to pose questions to the conductor. If the leader of your section can’t answer your question he or she should pose the question to the conductor. Be sure you can clearly see the conductor. Count the notes and bars carefully. Listen, not just to your own part,

but to everything else that is going on around you. Be respectful of other people’s space. Don´t talk or whisper if the conductor is talking or rehearsing other sections and you´re not playing. Play with confidence and don’t be ashamed of messing up, keep your cool and be aware of what’s going on.
etly until all others are done. Do not practice while others are tuning. Tune quietly and not loudly. Begin by tuning your note of A until everyone has done so then proceed to tune the rest of your instrument. Don’t practice loudly before rehearsal so that everyone can hear how great you are. Many will hate you immediately. Look over your
not directly in the line of sight of your partner. They need to see the notes on the music sheet. Try to always have your instrument in top condition, carrying an extra set of strings and be sure your bow hair is in good condition. Keep your focus up by sleeping well the night before a performance, and eating right. Bananas are good for nerves if you get ner-
Observe dynamics, i.e. soft or loud, especially extreme soft dynamics otherwise you might stick out and destroy the effect for the whole section.
It’s better to follow your section, even if your leader is wrong, than to strike out on your own if he or she has entered at the wrong spot. Hopefully you have a good leader who isn’t wrong very often, preferably, never. No matter how tempted you may
part and practice softly instead of showing off or do some quiet warm-ups. Play scales, arpeggios, your part, or whatever you need to play to feel ready. Don’t text or surf your phone (or any other electronic mobile device) when the conductor is working with another section. Instead, pay attention to what he/she is telling the other section. Bring cough drops in case you or someone else has a coughing attack. If you must choose between getting all the notes, or getting the beats, choose the beats. If you have to completely fake a section, get the bowings in sync with your section at the very least. Know which notes and exposed sections exist for your part and learn them to the best of your ability. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or ask questions. Don’t be the loudest player in the
vous before a concert, though if you don’t have a solo there’s not really much reason to feel nervous. Your colleagues are all there and you have nothing to fear if you know your parts inside out. For women - be careful what kind of skirts you choose if you’re more comfortable sitting with your legs apart to play. If you can’t play your part learn how to air-bow (i.e., look like you are playing when you’re not – when the going is too tough) because one person playing wrong is still heard under ten playing correctly. Even some professional orchestral musicians fake things from time to time. Last but not least, whether in a pop/rock/jazz band or a full orchestra, smile and have fun. The audience will always be responsive to a great attitude.
be to take your finger and “thump” on an instrument in the percussion section, don’t. In fact, refrain from walking through the percussion set up at all. Keep your ears and eyes open and your mouth shut. When the oboe plays 440 Hz at the beginning of rehearsal or after a break, stop what you are doing and be silent. He/she is setting the tuning tone. Tune only when it is your section’s turn to tune. When you are done tuning sit qui-
group unless asked for. Arrogance wins no friends. A pleasant attitude makes for a player that others want to have around. Do not wear perfume/cologne, or at least limit the amount. Some people are allergic. Make sure your case is properly stored. Do not handle other people’s instruments unless they offer you. Play with both your feet on the floor and never crossed. Make sure that your violin/viola is
