PATTAYA PEOPLE TELEVISION – 25 HOURS A DAY
PPTV has so many features to try and schedule in to our 24 hours a day TV output, that plans are now being made to increase the timeline to 25 hours a day. There are a few technical issues to overcome but it’s thought that if we can reduce each hour to 57.6 minutes, then the 25 hour dream is a possibility. People Television is continuing to entertain and inform the Ex Pat community of Pattaya with fun items and important information and is constantly being updated to provide a revised schedule.
Coming up in July is the new condensed format focusing on essential information for Ex Pats in Pattaya such as Darren McGarry from Key Visa who is featured every month with the latest important visa info. The very popular ‘Yoga Pose Of The Day’ series, with instructions from guru Diana Mountanous, will continue with excercises and postures intended to help health and flexibility. Strike a pose and get fit! Plus the weekly ‘Pattaya Ex Pats Club’ TV feature is included with interesting and, sometimes, vital information from the interesting guest speakers that appear there every week. Barry Upton is always out and about gathering interesting items from Pattaya and beyond. This month features his film of the 2019 Pattaya Bikini Beach Race plus an interview with the Sergio, the owner of the amazing ‘Bacco Beach’ Italian restaurant in Na Jomtien. If you have any ideas for features or can recommend interesting people for Barry to chat to for his ‘Pattaya Stories’ series or any other new features, please contact Pattaya People Media Group by e-mailing to info@pattayapeople.com. BEST JAPANESE IN THAILAND It has been a while, but as I recall this restaurant put the “show” in dinner and a show. BENIHANA was just voted best Japanese restaurant in Thailand for the second year in a row by Thailand Tatler magazine! This is not your typical steak and shrimp Tepenyaki restaurant, as it offers a wide variety of premium selections as well as pages of high end sushi rolls and sashimi. I came to explore all that BENIHANA had become. Regular readers know I am a bottomless pit for sushi
rolls and desert cakes, this time I will not disappoint. Located at the Royal Garden Shopping Mall on the third floor, it seemed like one should have cocktails on the patio overlooking the beach. And so that was done. A great way to settle in and get started looking at all the menu choices. I advised my group that I would finish all sushi rolls so feel free to try something new. As a result I got to enjoy an Angry Tuna roll, a Hamachi Beach roll, the Zen Gar-
den, an obvious CA roll, the FAT DUCK roll with foie gras, two other rolls I couldn’t find pictures of in the menu. Only the Godzilla Roll (Wagyu beef) escaped uneaten. As is usual for me I had to request extra ginger and wasabi to wash it all down. It was promptly delivered. This was considered my appetizer and I will say it worked. We settle into ordering KOBE beef, Hokkaido scallops, Snow fish, and Tiger Prawns for the main course. As an American I am aware of American restaurants who claim Kobe beef but do not have certificates of proof. As a result, before ordering I got to see the certificate. This is a good restaurant. Note: Wagyu is not even close to Kobe.

So our servers promptly deliver the salad with ginger sauce, miso soup with onion and edamame. Our chef arrives and begins showing off. After a bit of bell ringing and catching containers in his hat he actually starts cooking. First comes the mixed vegetables. He slices the onions and carefully stacks the rings into a tower. You know what is coming… a fire volcano. Being bold I of course don’t lean back and get my eyebrows flame trimmed for free. Or at least my forehead gets warm. Our chef is named Shake (he claimed it is pronounced like the wine sake, but I kept singing the song shake, shake, shake, and he obliged. From spinning eggs on a spatula, he successfully split four in a row into a bowl to prep for the shrimp fried rice. He had a shill at the end of the table from the company and he could throw shrimp into his mouth every time. I, of course, missed every one. Next comes Tiger prawns. You know I am a cold water lobster kind of guy but these come darn close in taste and texture. A couple seared pieces of snowfish goes with it. Now beautiful large white Hokkaido scallops quickly seared and made to dance on the hot griddle and served, delicious. Now of course the main event the Kobe beef. WE all make it easy medium rare. I am pleased to report no guest dipped it in any sauce, delicious on its own. I would have freaked. Couldn’t help but notice they have a Tomahawk steak as well. Next time. In keeping with my tradition I ate 4 cakes for desert. A chocolate brownie, blueberry cheesecake, a strawberry/blue berry meringue and a Japanese desert called a flaming banana combo. It was all big fun 2 hours flew by... By Nick Athens

ENVELOPES FULL OF CASH
Twenty six young toddlers recently attended their graduation ceremony at Father Ray Day Care Center. They are now old enough to enter kindergarten classes at their local school and not only did they receive their graduation certificates, the were also presented with gifts and an envelope containing cash. Each morning around fifty young children arrive at the Day Care Center. First thing they do is have breakfast as there are many families who will have no food at home. They after singing the national anthem and raising the flag of Thailand they spend the day learning, mostly through play. Apart from breakfast the Center also provides lunch, and the cook also makes sure the kids get a big dose of healthy vitamin C as she squeezes the oranges herself. All this costs just twenty Baht each day, and a percentage of that twenty Baht is saved and presented back to the children at the graduation ceremony. The children all arrived at the graduation ceremony in their new school uniforms. Buying shirts or
blouses, skirts and shorts, socks, underwear, shoes and a sports kit, any parent will agree can become quite expensive. The money they receive back, that small percentage of all the twenty Bahts, covers the cost of the uniforms, meaning the parents are not struggling to find money they don’t really have.

THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA 9
ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY
When Father Ray Brennan, founder of several projects for the underprivileged here in Pattaya, passed away in 2003, many said that the work he started would not continue without him. Some said that without Father Ray there could be no Father Ray Foundation. But in 2003 the Foundation was taking care of and educating several hundred children and stu-
dents, they would still need a home, a safe place to life and an education. Most of the success of the Foundation which continued after the passing of Father Ray was down to Brother Denis Gervais, who, following his retirement from IBM, spent twenty five years devising, designing, training and putting into operation systems that that improved the way the accounting,
purchasing and administration departments worked. When Brother Denis passed away in June 2018 he left an organization that today cares for and educates 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities and could rival a similar organization in the West for the way it is run and managed. On the morning of Sunday 9th June, on what would have been
his 74th birthday, a memorial mass to commemorate the first anniversary of his death was held at the small chapel that Father Ray had built in the 1980’s on the grounds of the Father Ray Foundation. The children sang as loud as they could and remembered ‘Brudder’, as they called him, before walking 450 meters up to St. Nikolaus Church where they laid flowers on his grave, said a prayer and sang a few more songs.

SEPTEMBER IN JUNE In May 2017 Alcazar Theater was the venue for one of the most remarkable theater performances Pattaya has ever seen. Performing art students from Brigham Young University in the United States took the audience on a journey around the world through dance. There were traditional dance performances from countries in Eastern Europe and to Mexico, Ireland to Spain and also to Bollywood and Broadway. This year eight performers from BYU arrived in Pattaya on their grand tour of China and South East Asia. The eight members of the acapella singing group, Vocal Point, performed for four hundred children and students at the Father Ray Foundation, using no instruments, though one member
of the group was one of the most talented beat boxers the children have ever heard. They sang many songs which saw the kids on their feet and dancing along to the music. Michael Jackson’s Thriller, September by Earth Wind & Fire and the Theme from Jaws were just three of the numbers they performed, and the reaction they received from the

audience was, in their opinion, the best they have received so far on their tour. Once the show was finished there was a rush to the stage for photographs, selfies and autographs; the singers spent more time posing for photos and signing their name than they did singing. But it was a great show, one the children loved.

BEWARE OF SNATCHERS Recently this month I came upon the case involving two foreigners, the first man was approached by a stranger on the street asking for help. The stranger had a one hundred USD bank note in his hand and wanted to know how much it would cost to convert it to Thai baht, to which the foreigner replied that with the exchange rate at around thirty three baht to the dollar it should be

around three thousand plus Thai baht. The stranger then asked the first man to show him what the Thai bank notes looked like as he was new to the country and was not sure. Thinking he could help this stranger out the man pulled out his wallet and from that he produced three thousand baht bank notes to show the stranger. The stranger thanked him and asked him what about a five hun-
dred baht note; could he have a look at that? While the first man was digging in his pockets for a five hundred bank note the stranger snatched thirty thousand baht from the first man’s wallet and ran away as quickly as he could. After his initial shock the victim started chasing after the thief who had stolen his money and had gotten a head start. Luckily for him a passerby who had witnessed the incident somehow managed to slow down the thief and also helped to apprehend him with the help of the victim. After the victim had taken his money back the thief was taken to the police station by the victim and the passerby. Thai criminal law section 336 states that snatching is a crime punishable by imprisonment of two to seven years and/or a fine of
not more of ten thousand baht. If in the act of committing the crime of snatching the victim is injured or dies then the punishment is increased accordingly, in the case of injury is a punishment of not more than ten years and/or fine of no more than twenty thousand baht and death is a sentence not more than fifteen years and/or a fine of no more than thirty thousand baht. OUR COMMENT: At the moment
there are a lot about foreigners who try to cheat and steal from each other. For example: the credit card gangsters, ATM gangsters, boiler room operations, illegal call centers; thus stories like the one above can be closer to you than you think. Because of this you have to be extremely careful about your life, the stranger that you do not know can end up doing something that can hurt you, cause you to lose money or ben-
efits. Anything that does not go through the correct process you have to count that it can be fake and try to not involve yourself with those things. If you want to exchange money go to a bank not a grey or black market money exchanger. If you have any questions or inquiries please feel free to contact us at any time. NOW APPROACHING THE HALF MILLION We all know that going to school/ college is where we build the foundation which helps to determine where we are going for the rest of our lives. Success at school is helped if the student is happy being a student and that depends on the facilities and friends that we make. When you look at the schools in Pattaya and, having visited most of them, you come away impressed with the excellent facilities that the students enjoy. Good sporting facilities, sports equipment, computers and good surroundings all to help the students in their studies. But venture a little further away from the centre and the facilities are not in the same league, Wat Weruwanaram School is but one example. A school that is in need of financial help to develop the

STUDENT EXCHANGE There was a lot of travelling between schools last week when Year 6 students from Regents School visited the School for the Blind, and students from the Father Ray Foundation made the journey to Regents. Over three mornings, twenty Year 6 students arrived at the School for the Blind in Naklua for a morning of new experiences. They walked around the school, met students in their classrooms and watched as they did their lessons. The same lessons as they do at Regents, but done a little
much that some asked if they could go again, every day! They danced, they sang and played instruments, a full day of fun. The toddlers from the Father Ray Day Care Center are regular visitors to Regents and it is good to see all the children learn and play together. Local Thai children and making new farang friends, and Regents has such a wonderful play room that it is often difficult getting the children to leave. On the final day of the week the blind students arrived at Regents where they were met by the Year differently in Naklua. The visitors were taught the correct way to guide a blind person, before donning a blindfold and having their friends guide them around the school; you need to have a friend you can trust. They also learned how to use a white cane, a tool that is recognized the world over, and while the Regents students may never need to use one they experienced what it was like to try and get from one place to another without seeing where they were going. Writing Braille was another skill they learned, with their eyes open, but reading all the little bumps on a piece of paper will take much longer to learn. The children from the Father Ray School for Children with Special Needs spent a day at Regents in the music and drama department, and they loved it. They liked it so

one realize that no matter where we come from, what we may or may not have, or what our ability or disability is, we are all the same and children never see the differences.

THE BODY IS ABOUT 70% WATER. WHAT IS YOUR FUEL?
Let’s start by saying that any water, even the worse, is far healthier than any fizzy drink or, yes, any kind of wine or beer. Actually there is nothing better than water! Safe but “dead” water The challenge with many water filtration systems, such as distillation and reverse osmosis (RO), is that they effectively remove most toxic elements and also many useful and beneficial elements, such as oxygen, hydrogen and minerals. Many bottled water companies have opted for simpler RO sys-

tems, which are operated on municipal water sources, then treated with trace amounts of ozone to provide sterilization. The finished water product in many cases is devoid of the necessary levels of elements needed to support life. One of these elements is hydrogen, so let’s see how it is important to our body.
What is “Hydrogen-Rich-Water”? “Hydrogen-Rich Water” or hydrogenated water contains active hydrogen ions that act as powerful antioxidants in your body. The ions help eliminate oxygen free radicals that contribute to the development of illness and ultimately are responsible for the aging process. Our body takes in the H2 and convert it into hydrogen anions, H-. or commonly termed as active hydrogen. Active Hydrogen is a powerful antioxidant as it is able to remove the

Hydrogen and Studies Hydrogen gas has been demonstrated in OVER 1,100 peer-reviewed studies to exert powerful therapeutic benefits for over 170 health conditions. And infusing hydrogen gas into drinking water is the most convenient method to consistently get the benefits. Recent evidence has shown that hydrogen is a potent antioxidative, antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory agent and so may have potential medical applications in cells, tissues and organs. There are several methods to administer hydrogen, such as inhalation of hydrogen gas, aerosol inhalation of a hydrogen-rich solution, drinking hydrogen dissolved in water, injecting hydrogen-rich saline (HRS) and taking a hydrogen bath. Drinking hydrogen solution (saline/pure water/ other solutions saturated with hydrogen) may be more practical in daily life and more suitable for daily consumption.

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:UNEXPECTED HEART ATTACK TRIGGERS You know some things, like obesity, can make more likely. But these lesser known triggers (including getting out of bed)may surprise youDr.Kamaljit Singh.
• Lack of Sleep: -You’ll feel grumpy and tired if you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, but it can raise your risk of a heart attack, too. In one study, researchers found that people who usually slept fewer than 6 hours a night were twice as likely to have a heart attack as those who slept 6 to 8. Doctors aren’t sure exactly why this is, but they do know that losing sleep can raise your blood pressure and lead to inflammation. Neither of those is good for your heart. • Migraine Headaches: -People who get these are more likely to have a heart attack later in life than those who don’t. And ones that include auras — strange sights, sounds, or feelings that start before the headache hits — seem to have a stronger link to heart problems. • Cold Weather: -It’s a shock to the system. Being outside in the winter months can cause your arteries to narrow, making it harder for blood to reach your heart. On top of that, your heart has to work harder to keep your body warm. If you’re concerned about it, play it smart in cold temperatures, and limit heavy physical activity, like snow shoveling. • Air Pollution and Car Exhaust: -Heart attacks are more common when air pollution levels are high. People who breathe dirty air on a regular basis are more likely to have clogged arteries and heart disease. Sitting in traffic may be especially dangerous, because it can combine car fumes with anger or frustration. • A Big, Heavy Meal: -Think twice before going back for seconds or thirds — it may hurt more than your waistline. When you eat large amounts of food in one sitting, it leads to higher levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine in your body. That can raise your blood pressure and heart rate, and it may trigger heart attacks in some people. Very fatty meals can also cause a sudden jump in a kind of fat in your blood, and that may temporarily damage some blood vessels as well.
ISSUE 615 JULY 2019
• Strong Emotions, Negative or Positive: -Anger, grief, and stress are known triggers of heart problems, but joyful events can sometimes lead to a heart attack as well. It can be triggered by the kind of emotions that go along with a surprise birthday party, a wedding, or the birth of a grandchild.
• Sex: -Like many forms of exercise, sexual activity has been linked to an increase in heart attack risk. But it’s a very small one, especially if you’re physically fit and in good health. For most people, sex can and should be an important — and healthy — part of life. But talk to your doctor if you have concerns.
• Sudden or Intense Exertion: -Getting in shape will protect your heart in the long run, but doing too much could be dangerous. About 6% of heart attacks are triggered by extreme physical effort. And while you’ve probably heard that exercise is a good way to relieve stress, it’s especially important not to overdo it when you’re angry or upset.
• Spectator Sports: -Playing sports can possibly trigger a heart attack — and watching them can, too. In 2006, heart attacks in Germany spiked during the national team’s World Cup soccer games. And after the 1980 Super Bowl, fatal heart attacks were up in Los Angeles after the Rams lost. But they were down after the 1984 Super Bowl, when the L.A. Raiders won.
• A Cold or the Flu: -When your immune system fights off a bug, it can cause inflammation that can damage your heart and arteries. In one study, people with respiratory infections were twice as likely to have a heart attack. But their risk level went back to normal after they’d been clear of the infection a few weeks. Heart attack rates are also higher during flu outbreaks — another good reason to get your flu shot. • Asthma: -Your chances of having a heart attack go up about 70% if you have this lung disease. Even if you use an inhaler to keep it under control, your risk is still higher than normal. Because of your asthma, you also may tend to ignore chest tightness, which can be an early sign of a heart attack. Doctors don’t know if breathing problems trigger heart attacks or if they simply have a common cause: inflammation.
• Alcohol:-A drink a day seems to help protect your heart against disease, but heavy drinking may do just the opposite. Over time, that can raise your blood pressure, increase certain kinds of bad cholesterol, and lead to weight gain — all of which can hurt your heart. There also can be short-term consequences: A single night of binge drinking can raise your risk of heart attack over the next week, according to one study. • Coffee: -Just like alcohol, coffee has its pluses and minuses. Caffeine makes your blood pressure go up for a short time, and that can trigger an attack, especially if you don’t drink it regularly or are at risk for other reasons. Overall, though, coffee seems to be good for your heart. People who have 3 to 5 cups a day tend to have less plaque in their arteries — and that’s a good thing.
• Getting Out of Bed in the Morning: -Heart attacks are more common in the morning. Your brain floods your body with hormones to help you wake up, and that puts some extra stress on your heart. You may also be dehydrated after a long sleep, which can make your heart work harder, too. • Disasters, Natural or Manmade; -Studies have shown that heart attack rates go up after major disasters like earthquakes or terrorist attacks. And not just immediately following them, but even up to a few years later. You may not be able to avoid these kinds of situations, but you can do things to manage your stress afterward, like make sure you get enough rest and exercise.

There is quite a lot of paperwork to be collated so as soon as you find out your partner is pregnant start finding out the documents you need as some things may need to be sent from overseas or copies obtained. You must supply two color photographs of the baby and it is best to use a professional photography shop who are experienced in taking passport photos for babies (if the child is very young) as the pho-
tos have to match the guidelines 100%. The passport application form must also be countersigned by someone who has known the family for 2 years, if they are from the EU they should also supply a copy of the data page of their passport. If the Mother is Thai, then the documents she needs to supply are her Birth Certificate, Thai Identity Card and house registration (Tabien Baan) as well as her passport if she has one and any marriage/divorce or change of name certificates. The Father (British Citizen) needs to supply his passport and the long version of his Birth Certificate (the one with his parents names on). If the father was born after 01/ 01/1983 he will also need to supply a copy of his parents birth cer-
tificates and their marriage certificate if they were married. If both parents are British Citizens then they would both need to supply these documents. If the child already has a Thai or other nationality passport then you will need to supply that also. Along with the babies original birth certificate and completed application form. There are some exceptions in which your child may not qualify for a British passport including if you were also born overseas. If this is the case, then please get further advice before deciding not to apply as a British passport will be very helpful for your child’s future. If you would like to apply for a British passport for your Thai child then please contact Darren at info@keyvisathailand.com

lar dates and meetups and phone call/text message proof of contact. If you have a contract phone in Thailand then your provider may be able to ask your telephone provider for an itemised bill. If you use Facebook Messenger or Whatsapp or LINE app to contact your partner then you can check the information on our website for details of how to download the messages https:// www.keyvisathailand.com/howto-prove-your-relationship/ Your partner should also supply details of any land or business he/ she owns in Thailand or if they have a regular job confirmation from their employer that their job will be kept open for them on their return. If you are living together in Thailand it may be slightly easier to convince the entry clearance officer of intent to return but this is not always the case so make sure that you have enough documentary proof also.
If you are living overseas and your partner is living in Thailand, then you will need to provide evidence of your previous meetings and contact when you are overseas. Again, you can use the information on our website to help to prove that you are in a genuine relationship. If you met your partner online, then the situation is more complicated and we recommend that you contact the Key Visa office for advice. Spending Christmas or any time of year back in your home country with your Thai partner is a great way to grow your relationship, whether or not you intend to live there full time. Being in a different country shows a different side of people’s characters which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. It is best to find out early how well your Thai partner copes with travelling and adapts to spending time in a different culture.
your death and so your loved ones do not have to face a long court battle to take control of your estate. - Proof of life document, when you are living overseas your pension provider may require proof that you are still alive. This usually comes in the form of a letter which needs to be signed by someone in an official position. Darren at Key Visa is able to sign this document for you. - Australian visas for your Thai wife, if you would like to take your wife or girlfriend on holiday or to live in Australia. Key Visa can help you to apply for tourist, provisional marriage, married and civil partner visas. - UK visas for your Thai wife, if
you would like to take your wife or girlfriend on holiday or to live in the UK. Key Visa can help you to apply for tourist, fiancee or settlement visas. - Visas for Ireland, Key Visa can help Thai nationals to apply for tourist and long stay visas in Ireland. They can also arrange legal marriage in Thailand for Irish citizens which is more complicated than many other nationalities and deal with Irish passport renewals. If you have a problem in Thailand that has not been listed above or any visa related questions, Darren’s door is open from 10am - 5pm, Monday - Friday, or you can call 038 422 131 to speak with him or his staff.

It is fast approaching the time of year when we start thinking about Christmas and spending time with our nearest and dearest. Many expats in Thailand choose to head home for the holidays and plan to take their partners with them. If you are planning to take your Thai partner back to your home country for a visit within the next few months then you need to start collecting your documentary evidence now. One of the main criteria that the entry clearance will look for is proof of a genuine relationship, so prepare as many documents to help with this as you can. If you live in Thailand together you can provide joint rental agreements, or your name listed in a yellow tabian baan at your partners home, correspondence for you both going to the same address, photos together at your home. This is an ideal opportunity for the expat community to gain knowledge about the practical aspects of police methods assisting and keeping the community safe in Pattaya. Tom is an engaging speaker, with gold dust insights into policing policies and methods. He will update us on law enforcement - how both the police and foreign police volunteers work. Historically most activities of the FPV have been based in Walking Street, the heart of Pattaya’s night life, where staff assist the visiting public with general inquiries and work with Tourist Police duty officers to resolve incidents such as drunken behaviour or breaches of public disorder. However, their duties include other tasks throughout the city and beyond, many in the day time as well as the evening. BUNKER BOYS Monday, June 17th Emerald 1st Roger Miles (5) 37 points 2nd Mike Lloyd (19) 36 points 3rd Sean Murphy (20) 35 points Near pins, Dave Ashman, Jimmy Carr, Roger Miles,& Michael Brett. As is often the case in monsoon season grey skies and the prospect of rain are ever-present as it was again today for our game at Emerald. By the time we reached the course, there was optimism that we might get in a dry round as the skies didn’t look as threat-
ening. Sports Day special pricing of eleven hundred and fifty baht all in represents great value and attracted out a field of fourteen. The course itself was in decent condition but a couple of greens were a bit shabby and in need of remediation. With the course virtually empty and nobody on the first tee, our four groups got away to an early start. By the time our last fourball reached the sixth tee, there were a few drops of rain which turned into a downpour by the time they had completed their putting, requiring a half hour break
for shelter. After that play continued on to the tenth tee when the rain reappeared with greater intensity and for longer requiring a second break in what became a very crowded drinks station. At this stage, some began to lose interest and two of our Aussie mates decided to pull up stumps. Some thought the Aussies were made of sterner stuff than that, while others thought a hot shower and a cold beer looked like a great option. One Aussie who didn’t quit was Roger Miles who gave an exhibition of quality golf tee to green and took first place with thirty-seven, a fine score under the conditions off a low handicap. Mike Lloyd had a solid round of thirty-six to take second place while once again Sean Murphy showing great consistency was in the winners circle taking third place with thirty-five points. The usual suspects were in the frame for the near pins with one each to Jimmy Carr, Roger Miles, Dave Ashman, and Michael Brett. The shot of the day went to Jimmy Carr on the par five eighteenth. In the address position to play his third to the green, Jimmy

was advised to check his ball only to find it was indeed someone else’s ball. When he finally found the correct ball he proceeded to chip it straight into the hole for an eagle from about eighty yards out, “lucks a fortune” Wednesday, June 19th Green Valley 1st Jimmy Carr (17) 38 points 2nd Sean Murphy (20) 37 points 3rd Geoff Parker (16) 35 points. Near pins Jimmy Carr X 2, Les Cobban X 2. Back to millionaire golf today with a round at a quality course with low season pricing in place and nobody else to be seen.. Once again four groups played the round in under three and a half hours. The course continues to improve from a recent roasting in hot weather and is almost back to its best again, but for some particular reason, the greens were unbelievably slow and a few players never really got to grips with them. Mild weather with overcast skies kept playing conditions comfortable as the rain stayed away. Despite a few notable absentees including Mike Lloyd missing his last game of this tour due to an ankle
injury we managed to assemble four groups. In the first group, there was a ding dong battle between Stuart Brown and Les Cobban with words of encouragement regularly exchanged between them with the expectation that one of them would take the days honors. As it turned out Les shaded Stuart by one point with neither making it into the winner’s circle, Les being beaten by an improving Geoff Parker on countback to take third place. Second place once again went to Sean Murphy on thirtyseven points a miraculous recovery having only scored two points from the first four holes. Top position went to Jimmy Carr who looks back in form again after a short lull. The near pin competition was hotly contested with Les Cobban putting his name on all four flags with the expectation that he might join the exclusive “all four club” as all his shots had a real chance of standing, however, Jimmy Carr had other ideas and stole two of them. At this stage in the race for a golfer of the month, it looks like the wily Irishman Sean Murphy is going to take the chocolates unless someone makes a late run of very good scores. Friday, June 21st Pattavia 1st Geoff Cox (17) 39 points 2nd Jimmy Carr ((17) 37 points 3rd Les Cobban (6) 34 points 4th Phil Moore (15) 34 points Near pins Geoff Cox, Phil Moore Les Cobban, Craig Dows. The Pattavia course was in fine condition for today’s round, in par-
ticular, the greens were excellent running fast and true. Nobody in front of us again so a round completed in three and a half hours which is how it should be. Today was the last game for a bunch of Melbourninans before returning to Oz over the weekend, also last game for Dave Ashman returning to Sweden after a flying visit to fix a roof problem after a tree fell on his house. A field of fifteen which included the late arriving and grumpy Geoff Cox who forgot we were departing early and had to be cajoled to playing. Luckily for him as he seems to thrive on adversity and went on to shoot the round of the day with a top score of thirty-nine points. Of all the Bunker Boys Geoff seems to have a real handle on the mental side of the game and plays the game one shot at a time, and rarely lets anything distract him from the task at hand. Once again Jimmy Carr continuing a good run of form took second place with thirty-seven points, when Jimmy strikes form he seems to hold it better than most and has now leapfrogged Sean into the lead in the race for golfer of the month. Les Cobban took third place with thirty-four, and Phil Moore rounded out the scoring also with thirty-four points missing out on countback. Most of the rest of the field were grouped together on thirty-four, thirty-three and thirty-two. Near pins went to Les Cox, Phil Moore, Les Cobban, and Craig Dows. In last weeks report, we shortchanged Craig leaving the s off his name. Roger Miles, Geoff Cox

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Sharp Cuts Pattaya Down to Size On Friday, 21st June The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited Pattaya Country Club to play a stableford competition in two flights, cut at seventeen and under. A few scattered clouds scudded across the sky on a hot day which saw the return of some old friends, notably Dave Arataki, making a return after five months out recuperating from some serious medical issues. The course was full as the group started on the tenth with dry fairways and consistent greens, which were just a tad slow. Good progress was made however. The second flight saw France’s Serge Straeten mark his return with a third place finish of 34 points, only one behind the consistent Irishman Donal McGuigan on 35. The flight winner was Tip Briney with another very solid round of 38 points. His secret? Leave the woods at home, trust the irons and hit the greens!
In the top flight third place went to Adam Barton on countback with 34 points, one point adrift of runner-up Colm O’Donovan who was resurgent following the “wig” award last time out. The flight winner was American Mark Sharp whose 41 points marked his best round with the group as he blunted the opposition in an otherwise tight flight. Near pins went to Petur Petursson (5), Bill Stewart (7), Kym Richardson (12) and Derek Phillips (16). Best nine consolation awards went to Warren Gallop whose 21 points then saw him retire sick before starting the back nine, which was won by Kevin LaBar with 29 points. “A” Flight (0-17) 1st Place – Mark Sharp (15) - 41 pts 2nd Place – Colm O’Donovan (17) - 35 pts 3rd Place – Adam Barton (17) - 34 pts c/back “B” Flight (18+) 1st Place – Tip Briney (28) - 38 pts
2nd Place – Donal McGuigan (19) – 35 pts 3rd Place – Serge Straeten ( 24) 34 pts Once again the “silly hat” went to a golfer who had not signed up for the day, Kevin McEntee, and serves as a friendly reminder that places are in great demand with the group and someone, someday, will be hugely disappointed with no name on the start list. The “wig” was worn by Stu Brown who has enjoyed the ultimate highs and inevitable lows this trip. It may have been the traditional longest day of the year but it was nevertheless enjoyable at Pattaya CC. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play ,Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.
BILLABONG WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12TH GREEN VALLEY STABLEFORD Some bunkers were flooded following heavy rain yesterday, Tuesday, and there are positive signs that the course is improving but there are still some large areas where the grass has disappeared and one would suggest that if the greens staff are waiting for the grass to grow they will be waiting a long time. These areas will need to be re-turfed before the course reverts to its
previous pristine condition. Only 6 groups today with many using there rain checks obtained from last week’s washout at Laem Chabang. In the ladies competition, it was great to welcome back Miss Sa (21) following a lengthy layoff due to ill health with a creditable 34 points , which could have been better had she not blobbed the last hole. In 2nd place was Miss Ta (23) with 37 points who had a very steady round with only one double bogey on the way home. But Miss Porn (22) made a return to form
with 40 points with only two 1 pointers in the 18 holes but a birdie on the par five 7th helped to keep the score moving. Selwyn Wegner (15) won a countback to occupy 3rd place with 35 points mainly due to a depression between the 10th and 13th holes with only 4 points. William Macey (22) was going well until the 10th which yielded no points and a double on the last hole for a total of 37 points to let in Jeff North (10) with 38 points to win the day. For the 2nd week running, there were no 2s.

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Neil Harvey and Stan Rees in balance On Tuesday 18th November we went to Pattana, where we played the B & C course. The course was in very good condition. We had nice weather and enjoyed our competition. Nevertheless the good conditions we had not top scores, because is long and not easy. We had an exciting battle between Stan Rees and Neil Harvey. They kept each other good in balance, but Stan beat Neil with 35 stable ford points on the count back. Third was Jonathan Pratt with 31 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were for Stan
Rees and John Feeney. On Thursday 20th June our venue was Pattaya country club. The course was in good condition with some wet spots due to the rain. The greens were true. ther match being played Sunday morning to see the top eight teams advance to the Classic Cup main trophy knock out stage with the next eight teams competing for the Mini Classic Cup. The weather although hot was tempered by some cloud cover and with no rain forecast the tournament got off to a good start. Played on both the new artificial green and also the grass green, the qualifying matches
required a particular skill to adjust to the different playing surfaces, which were played on alternately and on which the bowls travelled at far differing speeds. With a few surprises en-route, which saw some of the favourites fail to qualify for the main trophy knockout the tournament progressed to the quarter final eliminations with six out of the top eight places being occupied by Thai teams. This bodes well for Thailand national squad who were using the tournament as an opportunity to gain experience of different greens before travelling to Australia to compete in the Asia Pacific Championships and later
in the year to the Philippines for the SEA games. The Semi-finals and Finals of both the Classic Cup and Mini Classic Cup were played on the grass surface with the standard of play and tension escalating as the matches became even more competitive (if that was possible). Ultimately it was one of the Thai National sides Team TNN; Kunanon Poungsiri (Tong), Saman Phonlangoen (March), Sonti Mana (Ti) that took the coveted Classic Cup Trophy and 25,00 baht prize Runners Up were Team Paradise; Sukum Moongchomklang, Poonsak Tongsri, Phitaya Sarapol having to settle for individual trophies’ and 12,000 baht which in
itself was no small return for a fun filled two days of top level lawn bowls. The winners of the Mini Classic Cup were Team Aussie Poms; consisting of Anthony & Michelle Griffiths and John Underwood. With Team Jane’s Boys; (Chenchira Duanghayap (Jane), Pongwit Kaeaopas (Hut), Don
Pritchard taking second spot. After a hard fought two day of bowls played in a great spirit and with a fun presentation buffet and party the biggest winner over the weekend was the game of Lawn Bowls. The next competition is a Pairs
tournament on June 15th/16thth everyone is welcome to participate or spectate. For a more social game the Retreat is Open 7 days a week 10001800 (Call 0995454272 for details).
A turnout of 48 bowlers both expat and Thai for this annual event which boasted excellent trophies and a prize fund of 50,000baht, guaranteed that this would be a hard fought event. Saturday saw the Teams play 3 matches of 14 ends with a fur-

10 GUITAR TIPS FOR LEARNERS
Take a look at the greatest guitarists who ever lived: Masters like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton, Hendrix, B.B. King, Jimmy Page... and almost anyone else you can think of...What do they all have in common? NONE of them had access to thousands of websites, books, DVDS, software, and videos... nor did they need to. Your first job as a guitarist is to figure out how to properly “train your hands” to play the type
of music you want to play. Practice a few things for short amounts of time and repeat enough times without exceeding your body’s ability. 1. Avoid The Left-Hand Death Grip When you first start playing, straight away you’ll discover that pressing the strings against the fret board is hard work, hurts your fingers and makes your wrist
ache. The natural way to combat this is by hooking your thumb over the top of the fret board to get leverage, which inadvertently causes you to press the strings more with the flat pad of your finger (where your fingerprint is) rather than the actual fingertip. This is sometimes called the “death grip”, because you do end up with a fairly fierce grip on your neck and it restricts the reach of your fingers. The proper technique is to have your thumb on the back of the guitar’s neck. This forces your hand to use the fingertips,
ISSUE 615 JULY 2019
which is far better and more accurate when it comes to playing just the notes you want without accidentally muting adjacent strings. 2. Practice Sitting Down & Standing Up Things are hard enough as it is without expecting you to waltz around the room while you’re playing. The important thing is one day you’ll be standing up in front of crowd. Playing with your guitar slung across your shoulder is a very different posture to sitting down. On a chair, you tend to hunch over and try to see what your hands are doing. Then, when you’re standing up, everything changes. You’ll find it much harder to see your left hand, for a start. Make sure you have a good guitar strap, adjust it to a comfortable length (forget slinging it down around your knees — looks cool, but it’s a bad playing position) and regularly practice playing while you’re standing up. 3. No Need For Speed Don’t ever bother trying to learn how to play fast. Really, don’t do it. Good technique is about accurate fingering and hitting the right notes every time, especially when it comes to scales and playing tricky bar chords. Concentrate on precise fingering. The truth is, learn to play properly and speed will happen all by itself. The biggest obstacle to fast playing is poor technique. Learn good technique and fast fingering will be a chucked-in-for-free bonus. Always take your time and play slowly. 4. Always Use Correct Fingering Over the centuries of guitar playing the experts have long figured out the best way to play certain chords and scales, meaning which fingers should be playing certain notes on the fret board. Occasionally, you might discover an easier way of playing these. Don’t be tempted. Correct fingering isn’t just about playing that chord or scale properly. Adding variations is considered too, such as sevenths and ninths, and your custom style of fingering a chord might prove that those variations can’t be played. Pay careful attention to the correct fingering of a chord and your hand’s position on the fret board for scales. 5. Silent Rehearsing You want to watch your favourite TV show when you’re supposed to be rehearsing? Don’t panic, a lot can be achieved by holding your
guitar and constantly swapping from one chord to another or playing scales without plucking the strings with your right hand. What
you’re doing is still training your left hand to play. It’s all solid practice. Good technique is locked-in habits when you’re playing. With your thumb on the back of the neck, remember? 6. Use A Smartphone Metronome. Playing to a click track is really hard at first, but the advantages later on are immeasurable. Your sense of rhythm and timing will get an early boost, if you try using a beat generator soon in your career. However, make sure you set the beats-per-minute (BPM) to something very slow. The idea is to get used to playing in time and at a steady tempo, but don’t rush this at the expense of learning technique. 7. Don’t Shy Away From Difficult Chords If anything, you should seek out these difficult bits and spend more time and energy on perfecting tricky chords, otherwise, you’ll find them a mental barrier to your playing. 8. Be Disciplined With Your Practice Nothing beats regularly putting your hands on the guitar and practicing. Even if it’s just for ten minutes a day when you’re otherwise too busy. Good technique comes from your mind and your fingers
The other side of the equation is not to push yourself too hard in the beginning. When your muscles start to creak and the fingertips are stinging, take a break and relax for a while. You can easily strain something and do damage to tendons and ligaments if you ignore the danger signs that you need a rest. 10. hand technique is often ignored in the effort to get those fingers on your left hand doing the correct thing. Don’t forget that learning how to play the guitar is a twohanded deal. Good luck if you’re starting out and I hope these tips can help you be the next Clapton.
remembering how it’s all supposed to work, particularly when it comes to those tricky fingerings. Try to set aside some time every day and develop good playing habits. 9. Give Yourself A Break and Listen to Music
