Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere? No 3. What surprised you most about Pattaya? Compared to Belgium where everything is strictly regu-

Friends are in Pattaya for a holiday - what must they absolutely see or do? Depending the profile of friends, I’ll suggest them to discover all the main things that made Thailand, and especially Pattaya a unique destination. Starting by Thai food of course, then Thai culture and Thai crafting, temples and monuments. For entertainment, I’ll just show them one of the numerous web page or

Pascal Deville, born in Belgium in 1964, has studied physical education and social sciences in college but at the age of 19, he started his business life in an insurance company where he became one of the top best salesmen in Belgium after few months. Then he was asked to become a sales trainer and coach in several companies and he was involved in different businesses such as merger and acquisition, telecommunications, and lately into the health market where he has developed a large network in the food supplement company. That last business became a passion for him and in 2002 he dedicated all his time to help people to get a healthier life thanks to a better nutrition. DANISH DELIGHT Review Of the “Favoritten” (The Favorite) Danish Restaurant For a change of pace from all the normal dishes, this month we went to the FAVORITTEN. Located on Soi Buakhao down by the market, same side of the street. Well since this is Danish, I started with an obligatory Carlsberg. Refreshing change from all my regular local beers to say the least. If you aren’t familiar with Danish food let me explain why this has to be in two parts. Lunch and dinners. Candidly lunches are more interesting as dinners are Scan-

dinavian and so when I do that review it will depend on execution more than menu. Savory is the word that comes to mind with Danish food. The Danish however are famous for their open face sandwiches for lunch. Known as “smoerrebroed” for open faced sandwich this gets adapted to Smorgasbord. When eating lunches the flavors are very distinctive so you should try one sandwich flavor at a time. Sometimes my American counterparts mix it all together into a big sandwich. Don’t do that, you will corrupt the flavors. Danish don’t have a need for lots of spicy seasonings but rely on strong flavors from aged cheeses, and fish and meats.

I started with a herring in curry sauce, topped with tomatoes, lettuce and onion on black bread it was surprisingly delicious. I picked out some herring to taste

You may know it as schnapps. Next we had a dish called falling star or stjerneskud. It was a symphony of seafood, a deep fried fish fillet on white bread with

it separately and somehow it alone was delicious and fresh. I ended this course with the obligatory appetizer of Danish aquavit.

toppings of mayonnaise, fresh vegetables, prawns and caviar. Next came a delicious rare roast beef with pickled mayo, fried on-

ions and fresh grated horseradish! I asked if we could try their “best selling” open faced sandwich. It turned out to be called the “vegetarians nightcap”. Near as I could tell it was called “Dyrlaegens Natmad”. It was a combination of pork and a pate for taste, very savory. As Favoritten also serve delicious Thai food we had a sea food SOM TAM which was excellent and not too spicy. Of course how could one pass up a smoked salmon salad? A large bowl, at this point I could not finish so took some home for midnight snack. So time for desert and tonight I feared I would fail my readers and only be able to eat just one desert. So I opted for Danish pancakes (thick crepes) with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. If you get tired of same old stuff, try a lunch of 1-2 open sandwiches here. Phone: 089-545-7487. personally took care of these 300 “guests” and managed to make them smile and laugh the entire day. As per Mr. Pisters: “I find it essential that the family members of our team are aware where their husband or wife, father or mother spends their days of working, be it cooking, making rooms, or serving guests at the Thai Garden Resort. The family members must have the opportunity to see and experience where the parents work and in what environment they make their living. We regard ourselves as one big family since our team members are the ones

who contribute to the success of the hotel and to the satisfaction of our clients.” Since fun and games also makes one hungry, a sumptuous buffet was prepared with all the goodies children like the most. TOURISM CONFIDENCE INDEX Bangkok – The quarterly Thailand Tourism Confidence Index of 600 tourism operators was steady at 100 in the second quarter of 2019 and stood at 100 as predicted in the previous quarter. The projection of the Thailand Tourism Confidence Index for the third quarter of 2019 is also set at 100. The survey is a collaboration between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics and divided into six parts. These include an overview of Thai tourism, confidence index of tourism operators, testimonials from domestic and international tourists, tourism situation during key festivals, international tourist arrival projections, and recommendations for future ac-

tion. The index ratings have a range of between 0 to 200: over 100 means better than the normal situation; 100 means normal; and below 100 means worse than normal. The second quarter index survey was carried out in May 2019 using a database of over 600 tourism operators as well as government officials from related agencies. It also interviewed 350 international and 350 domestic tourists, respectively. The findings in the second quarter of 2019 highlighted both the micro and macro factors affecting Thailand’s tourism industry: the slowdown of the world economy as well as Thailand’s economic stagnation; the Thai government’s stimulus and tax reduction scheme; extension on

the visa-arrival fee waiver for citizens of 20 nations for another six months until October 2019, and the strength of the Thai Baht to a weakening US dollar combined with rising inflation. Both tourism operators and tourists agreed that Bangkok and Chiang Mai are facing over tourism issues that are impacting the destinations, whilst they pointed to Phuket as a destination that can still handle more tourists. The Index forecasts that Thailand will welcome 9.7 million international tourists (up 7.06% year-onyear) in the third quarter of 2019. It projects that total arrivals will reach 40.06 million international tourists for all of 2019, up 4.65% over 2018.

MARITAL ASSETS In cases of divorce we are always asked about marital assets, all property obtained after the initial marriage registration is counted as marital assets. This is not all cut and dry and there are exceptions to this such as in the example below. A foreign man who has

married a Thai woman and has settled down here started up a company. In this company he holds forty nine percent of the shares with the other fifty one percent being held by a Thai national with no relation to him. His wife does not hold any shares,

does not hold a position in the company and is not on the company registry and thus is not in any way involved. We will discuss what will happen to the company and its assets in the case of a divorce between the two parties. If it is just the company it will be

difficult for the spouse to take anything, but if that company has any assets such as the land and house it will be a more complicated process. If the opposing side declares that property to be a part of the marital assets, then they are required to prove it in court. If they are able to prove this then the other party is eligible for fifty percent of the property. In the event they cannot prove this, then as the property is the asset of a company which is a third party that is not involved in the divorce proceedings and as such cannot be claimed as a marital asset. Normally when you purchase the land and house you will take residence there, because of this it will be easy to prove that the property is used by both parties and is a marital asset. Quite often when taking up residence the spouses name will be listed on the house certificate that shows the owner of the house, this proves that she is living or has lived in that property. If you have used the companies name as the owner of the property and it is listed in the blue house certificate book then you can still pro-

ISSUE 617  SEPTEMBER 2019

tect yourself from losing in the case of a divorce. Another factor to account for is witness testimonies by neighbours or guards if any which can also prove that the property is a marital asset and not a place of business. In final if you have put the property in your company’s name it will seem that you have tried to avoid the law as you cannot own land in Thailand, you will still be able to fight the case but it will be more difficult. Lawyer comment: In the facts of the case it is not difficult to prove what belongs to whom and whose name it is under, I understand that the name of the asset is under the name of the company. Most would think that the company is similar to the juristic person and it does not concern in any way to the spouse but actually it does and it is difficult to run away from that fact. If you want to win the case one way of do this is by having the Thai shareholder that you use in the company come to fight the case for their portion of the company. If you do this then the spouse will not have the chance to obtain

those assets, though you have to be very careful not to commit perjury in front of the judge and the court as it is a serious offense and you should never lie. Before you try to hide or protect anything you should always make sure that it is very difficult to prove and it is reasonable to be true to the words that you declare in court, when the facts come to light you will have to take responsibility for any actions. There is a proverb in the legal world that starts “ Always go to court with free hands” the meaning of this is that you have to tell the truth and prove you side by bringing witness and basing your argument on fact. The judge will always be the one who considers the law and applies it to your case and as such will always try to be fair in the eyes of the law. If you have your own case or any questions regarding law in Thailand please feel free to write in to us and we will answer any questions or concerns in this column. A GAME NOT MANY HAVE HEARD OF ing accidents, and there are those from rural Thailand and from Cambodia who are victims of landmines. Other players were born with lower limb deformities,

There can not be many people living in Thailand today who have not watched a game of volleyball, almost a national sport along with soccer and ta-kraw. But how many have ever watched, or even heard of sitting volleyball? It is a game played by people with disabilities, and was introduced into the Paralympics in 1980. Thailand has never qualified for the Paralympics, but it recently hosted an international friendly competition inviting teams from Malaysia, Cambodia, and they played at the Technological College for People with Disabili-

all three teams will meet again in January next year when they participate in the 2020 ASEAN Paragames which will be taking place in the Philippines. While the

recent competition may have been friendly, at the January competition there will be eleven teams competing and the rivalry will be fierce.

ties here in Pattaya. Rules of sitting volleyball are based on the regular rules for standing volleyball, except the court is smaller, the net much lower and players must have at least one buttock on the court whenever they make contact with the ball. Easier said than done, especially when the ball is out of reach and if only you could lift up one inch you would have the ball. But rules and rules and the two umpires ensure the rules are strictly followed. Almost half the players are missing a limb due to traffic or farm-

PSC MONTHLY TOURNAMENT THURSDAY AUGUST 15TH 169th PSC MEMBERS TOURNAMENT Parichat International Golf Links may not be every golfer’s cup of tea as it is a tricky test of golf for the individual and has one or two quirky holes but it is an excellent venue for a 4 person Texas scramble (Ambrose for the Aussies)! A very satisfactory turnout for the time of year, given the low number of visitors, no doubt being affected by the depressed foreign exchange rates which are also changing the playing habits of many the farangs who live here. Whereas previously many were playing three times a week, there are an increasing number reducing the amount of golf they play or are looking for the less expensive courses.

The 31 players were welcomed at the clubhouse by Tim and Nigel for a first tee time of 9.10am. and apart from a slight scare when a six ball was lined up outside just before our scheduled start everything at check-in went smoothly enough; helped after a few words from Jack persuaded the starter to move them to the tenth tee. The weather was ideal; sunny with some clouds but with a good breeze keeping the temperature very comfortable, paving the way for some very pleasant golfing conditions. Jack, was on the first tee as usual, getting the first group away slightly early, with everyone away by about ten past ten. There were no delays and generally a good pace of play was seen through-

out, most groups finishing in a little over four hours. Jack met up with his old Outback partner Bob at The Billabong on the Darkside for the presentation, courtesy of owner Sandy; where it was great to see so many of the players come back to enjoy a couple beers, a few stories with good friends and some good food. The prize giving went ahead shortly after 3.30pm, with Nigel doing the usual opening speech, thankyous and introductions before handing over to Jack, the PSC Golf Chairman for a few words about future events; which included a possible change of date and format at Eastern Star next

month, full details to be made available shortly and reminders about the Soi Dao trip in October (7th – 9th), with the first closing date for your secured reservation being 7th September. Nigel then announced the results with Vice President Tim Knight presenting the prizes, and Jack taking the photos. The winning team, comprising of Gareth, Bob, Simon & Richard were probably the red hot favourites but after seeing them all miss the fairway on the first hole, there was some doubt but with a couple of eagles and a birdie on the last, they just squeezed home by 0.2 of a shot, with 55.5.

Full Result 1st Gareth Gill, Bob Newell, Simon Philbrook & Richard Holt 55.5 (H’cap 4.5) 2nd Gerald Sweetnam, Michael Anderson, Khalifa Nasser & Don Sinclair 55.7 (H’cap 6.3) 3rd Dick Warberg, John Pierrel, Brian Gabe & Henry Wong 57.2 (H’cap 8.8) Note Parichat has undergone some surprising changes since it was opened in 2014; and although the

concept plan is not fully available, the work done to date under the relatively new management, has shown a distinct improvement to the course and facilities. Priced sensibly with a PSC member card at 1400 Baht inclusive of everything Mon to Fri except holidays, it’s well worth another look for the sceptics and gets even better on a Mon & Weds Sport Day for everyone at just 1250 Baht. INTERNATIONAL OPEN TRIPLES 2019

In terms of entrants, the RBSC Invitational two bowls triples competition in Bangkok is the biggest on the bowling calendar. This year saw a record 84 teams entering this prestigious event, a 5day competition from the 9th to the 13th of July. The teams came from all over Asia, with entrants from, China, Hong Kong, Malay-

sia, Philippians, Vietnam and of course, Thailand. Thailand’s representatives, included teams from the RBSC club which also featured some of the Thai international team who recently returned from the Asian games in Australia. The Retreat Pattaya had three teams, the Retreat Red, the Retreat Green and

the Retreat Blue. The Green team(John Parkinson, Darren Chatwin and Chris Bailey) were looking to go one better than the previous year when they were narrowly beaten by Malaysia’s international team in the final. The Red team(Colin Brocklehurst, Alan Austin and Kyle Smith) full of experience and expectation and the Blue Team (Willian Bone, Aaron James New and Peter Barnes) all having played in the event before. After a grueling four days, 62 of the teams were eliminated. Unfortunately, our Blue team fell at that hurdle. But as the event was split into the main event(16) and the plate event(16) the Retreat managed to get the other two teams into the last 16 of the main event. The Red team, despite a sterling effort, fell at this hurdle, leaving the Green team to fly the flag as they eased their way into

the quarter final, a match beamed live on Facebook. From an initial 84 teams, to find yourself in the quarter finals would be a great achievement, but the Green team were not planning on stopping there. Two victories later, they found themselves, for the second year running, in the main final, but this time to face local favorites RBSC A. A final that ebbed and flowed with some top-quality bowls from all players, there could only be one winner. And despite the Retreat Green’s valiant attempt to land the spoils, they were to fall short again, being on the wrong end of an 19-18 score line. A few days after the event finished, the Retreat was happy to welcome over thirty bowlers from Honk Kong, who, having use d the facility before were keen to add this trip to their itinerary. A competition was organized, which

included Retreat regulars and our guests. Although we ran a competition, the intensity of Bangkok disappeared and everyone was able to relax, enjoy the bowls, the first-class food as well as a dip in the pool. Looking for something new? Lawn bowls is a game that almost anyone can play. It’s fun, is a great form of exercise and the camaraderie and banter has to

seen to be believed. Anyone interested in giving it a try join us at the Retreat Lawn Bowls Club in Nong Prue (Soi 87 off Sukhumvit) 15 minutes outside of Pattaya We are open seven days a week 1000- 1800. We cater for all standards of bowlers and free tuition is available. Just turn up or call 0995454272 for more details. We look forward to seeing you.

IF OUR GUT IS OUR SECOND BRAIN, WE SHOULD FEED IT CLEVERLY

Your digestive system is where it all begins. You won’t produce energy, have a balanced mood, or fight illness if you can’t digest, break down, and absorb nutrients. Here is our Second Brain! Nearly 100 trillion bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms compose your gut microbiome, and advancing science has made it clear that these organisms play a major role in your mental and physical health.  The human gut has 200 million neurons and produces 95 percent 

of your body’s serotonin, a brain chemical associated with emotional well-being.  Your immune system is educated based on the information received from your gut bacteria.  Exposure to a wide variety of bacteria helps your immune system stay alert and optimizes its function. There are many simple things you can do to keep your digestive system healthy, such as following a clean diet with Probiotic, Enzymes, Therapeutic Herbs and obviously Fibers. Today, we’ll focus on fiber!

What exactly is fiber?

quickly.”

Fiber is the element in plants (like fruits, vegetables and whole grains) that our bodies do not digest. Fiber is different from most foods that we eat in that, unlike most foods which are absorbed and digested, fiber is not absorbed or digested. It actually passes quickly through your digestive tract, mostly intact, and it is not broken down like other foods. The fact that fiber is mostly left intact is a good thing as it creates bulk which aids in moving stool and harmful carcinogens through the digestive tract.

Public health guidelines from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advise Americans to eat between 20 and 30 grams of fi-

whole grains. Whole grains are not the best source of fiber, as they contain anti-nutrients and glutinous, “binding” proteins. Instead, focus on eating more

can also use a rich fiber-rich supplement such as Psyllium Husk. It provides almost 10 gr of soluble fiber per serving ! When you think of all the health benefits, plus the added bonus that

There are two kinds of fiber: soluble and insoluble. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Soluble fiber dissolves with water and creates a gel-like substance that helps to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels.” Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, “absorbs water which adds bulk to your digestive tract and helps to move things through ber a day, but most adults don’t even eat half that much. Why fiber is so important ? Because fiber helps to move stool through your digestive tract and colon, it actually helps to prevent colon cancer as it keeps your colon clean and healthy. Other health benefits of fiber include reducing the incidence of heart disease, lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose levels and inflammation, and even weight loss. Fiber can help with weight loss because it creates a fullness within your intestines that helps you to eat less.

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:LOVE YOUR LIVER

that can gum up the tiny blood vessels inside the organ, either over time or all at once (if you take a lot). Other herbs like Atractylis gummifera, Camellia sinensis, celandine, chaparral, germander, and pennyroyal oil (used in tea) can also cause liver problems

You can damage your liver with more than just alcohol. Here’s what to do (and what to avoid) to help keep this vital organ HealthyDr.Kamaljit Singh. Drink Coffee: -People who drink a few cups of coffee a day may be less likely to get liver diseases including cancer and scarring (fibrosis, cirrhosis). It might even slow those conditions in some people who have them. Filtered, instant, and espresso all seem to work. Still, helpful as coffee may be, it can’t take the place of a balanced diet, a healthy weight, plenty of water, and regular exercise for a healthy liver. Don’t Overdo Acetaminophen: -It’s in more than 600 meds, including many cold and flu drugs. Most adults shouldn’t get more than 4,000 milligrams per day. More could hurt your liver. Try not to take more than one product with acetaminophen per day, and never take more than what the package instructions recommend. Practice Safe Sex: -You want to protect yourself and your partner from conditions that can spread through sex, including many that could eventually hurt your liver. One, hepatitis C, infects it directly and can do serious harm over time. Most people don’t notice they have it until many years later when much of the damage has been done. Your doctor can test to see if you have it. Take Your Meds Right: -Though acetaminophen is the most common medication that can harm your liver, other meds can do that, too — especially if you don’t take them as directed. It may also depend on your genes, other prescriptions, and your food. Speak to your doctor if you’re tired, nauseous, or itchy or you notice yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice) after you start a new medicine. Statins for high cholesterol and certain antibiotics (amoxicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin) are some examples Check on Your Supplements: -They cause almost a quarter of all liver damage. Herbs like borage, comfrey, gromwell, and coltsfoot have “pyrrolizidine alkaloids”

ISSUE 617  SEPTEMBER 2019

Skip Herbal Liver Remedies: Common liver remedies like milk thistle, turmeric, and astragalus don’t have much research behind them. Colloidal silver, sometimes used (with little scientific support) for hepatitis C, can cause irreversible side effects like turning your skin blue. Tell your doctor about all pills, herbs, and supplements you take. First, to check on the safety of each item, but also because of how they might interact with each other. Drink Only in Moderation: When you drink, your liver stops doing other things so it can break down the alcohol and remove it from your blood. If you overdo it — more than a drink a day for women, two a day for men — it’s really hard on the organ and could hurt it. Over time, this often leads to “fatty liver,” an early sign of disease. It also might cause bad bacteria to grow in your gut that can travel to your liver and cause damage. Eat the Rainbow: -That means fruits and vegetables from all the colors of the rainbow, which helps ensure you get all the nutrients and fiber you need. Avoid refined carbs like doughnuts and white bread in favor of whole-grain rice, breads, and cereals. A bit of meat, dairy, and fat can also help. But not too much, and look for “good” (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) fats from seeds, nuts, fish, and vegetable oils.

if your BMI doesn’t change, exercise is likely to help. Why? Because it improves how your insulin works and burns triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood. Avoid Toxins: -These might be chemicals in cleaning products, spray cans, insecticides, and other household items. They could hurt cells in your liver if you touch, absorb, or breathe in too much of them. You can protect yourself if you wear a mask and goggles and open the windows when you use them. Watch Out for Needle Risks: If you or someone you know has ever injected illegal drugs, you should get tested for hepatitis C, which can spread through blood. The same is true if you’ve had an accidental needle stick. A blood test can let you know if you’ve ever had the hepatitis C virus. Get Vaccinated: -You can get it for hepatitis A and hepatitis B, but not for hepatitis C. A lot of kids have been vaccinated, but many adults haven’t. Talk to your doctor about whether you need it. ‘It might be especially important if your immune system is weak or your liver already shows some damage For More Details Contact: Mobile (+66) 869032543, (+91) 9803044056 (India) Email: info@drkamalholistic.com Web: www.drkamalholistic.com

Keep a Healthy Body Weight: -That means working to keep a body mass index (BMI) of between 18 and 25. There are online tools to help you figure out your number. Exercise and a well-balanced diet are the best way to help maintain a good-for-you weight and lower your chances of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Your doctor can help you set a weight goal that will help keep your whole body well over the long term. Wash Your Hands: -It’s a simple, easy way to keep germs away that could infect your liver. Just a little soap and warm water will do. It’s especially important right before you prepare food and right after you change a diaper or go to the bathroom. You can spread hepatitis A in particular when you touch food or water with contaminated hands Exercise Regularly: -It can help keep your BMI at the right level, which could protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. ISSUE 617  SEPTEMBER 2019

WHY IS THE BAHT SO STRONG? You may have noticed that you’re getting a lot more Dollars, Pounds, Euros and Yen for your Baht nowadays. Here are some reasons why. Like any other markets, forex fluctuates to an extent that it’s easy for people to identify the trends they want to believe in. When it comes to the Baht, though, it’s pretty clear that it has consistently become stronger over the last four years.

and Thailand has high household debt. Political reasons Perceived political stability under the military government is another reason. More recently the gap between the unelected and elected government provided a prime opportunity for speculators to buy the Baht on the reasoning (correct or otherwise) that firm policy towards the Baht would be lacking until a new government

with one of the largest current account surpluses. It just so happened that other factors supported the Thai Baht at that time (as they still do now) and since then the Thai Baht has reigned as a safe-haven. This will continue until Thailand’s economic numbers deteriorate markedly; a political crisis develops; or another country somehow manages to improve on Thailand’s statistics, which will be difficult considering the world appears to be slid-

underachievement. The surplus is also due to Thailand continuing to have sunset industries and ba-

The Bank of Thailand (BoT), however, appears to fluctuate between tracking other currencies,

sic agricultural exports but the former will eventually deteriorate, as more and more sunset industries such as textiles shift production to cheaper production bases. Higher value goods tend to use less local raw material content thus reducing the surplus.

such as the US Dollar or the Chinese Yuan. It’s difficult to judge if this tactic is successful. It may well be that the BoT has been caught out and allowed the THB to get too strong. On the other hand, it could be that it has made a smart move, in that a strong Baht suggests relative liquidity: partly because of the structurally suppressed demand, the excess capacity and the lack of investment opportunities. It’s not clear as to whether Thailand actually has a Finance Ministry and a monetary policy conducting this, however. If it does, I’m not sure how we could describe its current and expected future stance vis-à-vis other central banks. One pet theory of mine is that Thailand could also be trying to conduct diplomatic financial policy – Vietnam has been an obvious beneficiary from the Sino-US trade tantrum and has found itself in the White House’s sights – it may be that Thai policy makers feel that a strong Baht might help avoid the worst of this kind of scrutiny. At the time of writing, the Thai baht is outperforming the Chinese Yuan and today, Monday 5th August, the Chinese Yuan weakened to more than CNY7 to USD1, amid trade tensions. But guess what? The Thai Baht strengthened slightly to the USD which is probably a reflection of the natural state of the THB at this time in

line with CNY? Probably not.

Foreign direct investment has been on the rise for the last two years and, with the US-China trade war, there is the potential for this to increase as international firms relocate their supply chain from China and Chinese investors both avoid tariffs and rising labour and production costs.

Structural reasons The main structural factors which have been strengthening the Baht for the last 5 years include a high current surplus, limited foreign borrowing by Thai corporations and relatively low public debt to GDP. As a result, the country has also seen a rise in USD reserves posted by Thai banks; largely from exports and tourism revenues. It is possible that demographics are also assisting in a limited capacity; although this is rather confined to the wealthier top few percent rather than the whole country, simply because not all older people are able to save,

is in place. Safe-haven status The herd impact of investors today has meant that trends become reasons in themselves until they’re no longer true. Thailand is grouped as an emerging market (EM) and money designated for EMs is seen as having to stick in them. There should be at least one currency of choice for when a crisis occurs: a safe-haven amongst EM currencies. Last year when we saw the run on the Turkish Lira, Indonesian Rupiah and other countries with deficits, speculators went overweight on Thai Baht as the EM designate

Added to that, while global growth has slowed, Thailand’s economy has been developing further in recent years, even if only on a headline basis, which is enough to satisfy the speculators – don’t forget much of the money flowing in is from so-called hot money – i.e. currency that moves quickly between financial markets – and not because of serious fundamental believers in Thailand! This is partly because Thailand’s current account balance has been positive for the last six years and partly down to previous economic

A weakening economic condition (partly due to the strong Baht) or likelihood of political instability will also prompt sellers in Baht. We suspect that the Thai currency has probably reached it’s peak, or at least very close to it.

ing down the economic tube.

Furthermore, Thailand’s foreign exchange reserves have risen by around 35% since 2016 and the annual number of tourists continues to increase: by 54% between 2014 and 2018. These factors fuel domestic demand, thus boost the Baht. The strong currency has attracted even more hot money, as well as simultaneously consolidating the situation.

Measures To curb hot money, and thus weaken the Baht, the BoT lowered the cap, in late July, on the outstanding balance of a nonresident account from THB 300m per person to THB200m. A couple of weeks earlier, it announced it was tapering THB60 billion out of its July issuance of 3, 6 and 12month bonds (the instruments speculators use to play the Thai Baht) and the government is believed to be considering a capital gains tax. History shows that a capital gains tax on Thai sovereign debt will begin to weaken the Thai Baht.

However, most people don’t give it much thought since the Bible has fallen out of mainstream thought, many in the world hold other beliefs and about half have no religious convictions at all. But without the Bible would a member of the human race encounter evidences on Earth that argue for if not the necessity of a final judgment but at least the need for it. Our guest speaker, a familiar face, Roger Fox will provide a three pronged non biblical argument for all to consider. It could be enlightening but certainly entertaining. Roger has often spoke on travel subjects, military and flying, and sometimes religious topics. He is an excellent and entertaining speaker, not to be missed. BUNKER BOYS Monday, August 5th Bangpra 1st Daryl Vernon (25) 38 points 2nd Tony Robbins (21) 37 points 3rd Robby Watts (8) 34 points Near pins Sam Gersholm, Jimmy Carr & Michael Brett After several months away The Bunker Boys made a return visit to Bangpra where we found the it surprisingly busy for low season. The course was in nice condition, in particular, the greens were at their speedy best. Caddies who didn’t have a customer were out on the course weeding and cleaning up leaves so maintenance is being carried out very well. The weather was hot and overcast with a good breeze blowing. A round of two halves for our winner today, Daryl Vernon has a massive twenty-five on the front nine which included a wipe, the back nine was a more modest thirteen so the question remains, which is the real Daryl?. Second place went to Tony Robbins who is now consistently returning good scores, Tony knocked in putts from everywhere except the last where he missed a tiddler which would have won him the game with the better back nine. Robby Watts came third after a mixed day with the putter, some excellent, some not so. Last week Robby was going to throw his putter away so maybe it’s not the putter after all. Back at Woody’s the real Daryl stood up and rang the bell, the first

time we have heard, it, previously there had been many silent rings so we wondered if indeed there was a striker in the bell. Near pins to Sam Gersholm, Jimmy Carr and Michael Brett. It seems we have a few scientists in our ranks, last week Keith Hemmings managed to bounce his ball from one lilypad to another across the water at Treasure Hill and onto the fairway, today Jimmy Carr managed a similar feat on the seventeenth minus waterlilies, Barnes Wallis would have been impressed. Wednesday, August 7th Pattavia 1st Les Cobban (7) 71 Net 2nd Tony Robbins (21) 71 Net 3rd Robby Watts (8) 73 Net Near pins Stuart Brown, Jimmy Carr, Tony Robbins,& Michael Brett Our first medal round of the month was played at the Pattavia course where heavy overnight rain freshened up the course nicely. Underfoot was damp enough to prevent much run on the fairways but not enough to require pick, clean, and place. Also, balls pitched and stopped quickly on the greens with big divets common, nevertheless they were still a bit slick when putting. Just about all of the caddies were male and were excellent, many of them low handicap golfers themselves. Today’s scoring was overall of a high standard, nothing like medal format to sharpen the focus. Les Cobban and Tony Robbins both finished on net seventy-one with Les

having a superior back nine to take first place. Robby Watts also had an excellent round and put himself in several birdie positions only to have a mediocre day with the putter again, this putter is causing Robby grief as some of his puts were top shelf and others forgettable, perhaps it’s not the putter after all but the person using it. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Stuart Brown, Tony Robbins and Michael Brett, Robby won all his sixes. Friday, August 9th Pattaya Country Club. 1st Tony Robbins (21) 35 points 2nd Michael Brett (15) 33 points 3rd Robby Watts (8) 32 points Near pins Robby Watts, Jimmy Carr, Stuart Brown, & Michael Brett. It seems we are in a windy weather pattern lately, every time we play the wind is up, sometimes quite strong as well as it was again today. To add even more difficulty today the blue tees were back at the black in many cases making the course extremely long. Under the circumstances, scoring was as good as could reasonably be expected. A pleasant surprise today with the arrival of Raleigh Gosney for a fiveweek stint, we also had a rare visit by Kevin LeBar and the return of Geoff Parker after a month in Cambodia. Possibly a record quick round today completed in about three hours and fifteen minutes. Following four consecutive rounds of thirty-seven points and not winning any of them today Tony Robbins had his first win of the year with thirty-five points. Second place went to Michael Brett with thirty-three points, in a position to challenge for a win until a

wipe on the seventeenth, in fact, five players went in the water on this hole also not scoring. Nobody had ever seen the tee so far back on this hole before. Third place went to Robby Watts foe the third time this week with thirty-two points. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, as usual, Robby Watts, Stuart Brown, and Michael Brett, Jimmy’s on the sixteenth was a whisker from an ace. Monday, August 12th Pattana Sport and Country Club B & A. 1st Geoffrey Parker (17) 36 points 2nd Raleigh Gosney (21) 35 points 3rd Wan Miller (20) 35 points Near pins Jimmy Carr &Evan Miller X 2. The Pattana course management generously agreed to keep our normal pricing despite it being a National Holiday in celebration of the Queens birthday. As might be expected for a holiday the course was busy, still, we played at a decent pace with no holdups. A grey overcast blustery cool day for the first game of the week at Pattana where we were allocated the B & A nines. Rain threatened for most of the day but the strong wind kept it away till the par six when we got hit with a squally shower with very strong wind, luckily it passed quickly and we completed the round without any further rain problems. On that par six, the wind was directly in our faces so no getting on the green in three and a par was a good result. A months break from golf must have benefited Geoff Parker as he came back to form today taking first place with thirty-six albeit off a generous handicap of seventeen. Raleigh Gosney who only played two games of golf

since his last visit also found good form with a score of thirty-five to edge out Wan Miller on countback. Near pins went to Wan’s lesser half Evan who took two with Jimmy Carr getting his usual one. Hard luck story of the day went to Tony Robbins who had at least five puts sit on the edge of the hole with none dropping in, sometimes it’s just not your day. Wednesday, August 14th Greenvalley 1st Michael Brett (15) 41 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (14) 38 points 3rd Daryl Vernon (25) 37 points Near pins Stuart Brown, Les Cobban, & Robby Watts X 2. In preparation for next weeks Singha Championship the Greenvalley course was competition ready and in beautiful condition, with the exception of a couple of bare areas on one or two fairways, a legacy of a recent dry spell. A nice mild day but once again strong wind blowing, instead of a wet monsoon season we seem to be getting a windy season. Overall conditions for golf were excellent and this was reflected in the scores returned, seven golfers had scores of thirty-six or better. Both Les Cobban and Peter Allen had twenty-one points on the front nine only to fade out on the back, Les had a mixed round with three birdies and two wipes. Four players were locked on thirty-seven points with Daryl Vernon emerging with the best back nine to take third place. A return to form saw Jimmy Carr take second with thirty-eight points and the winner with forty-one points was Michael Brett. Near pins went to Les Cobban and Stuart Brown with Robby Watts taking two. Today

was the first time since we had Greenvalley on our low season roster that local member Stuart Brown didn’t appear in the winner’s circle. Friday, August 16th Greenwood B & C 1st Daryl Vernon (25) 38 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (14) 34 points 3rd Robby Watts (7) 34 points Near Pins Daryl Vernon. Some of the most pleasant conditions for golf anyone could wish for were enjoyed by all today, mild temperatures with a slight breeze blowing. Rain threatened on the back nine but luckily stayed away. The course was as usual in great condition but if rain doesn’t come soon it will deteriorate in the coming high season, the water catchment areas are very low. Since his return from a two-month break in the UK, Daryl Vernon is on fire with booming drives and solid putting, he scored thirty-eight points to take first place and put him in contention for the golfer of the month, a cut in handicap may be just around the corner. Jimmy Carr continues to perform solidly and took second place with thirtyfour points beating Robby Watts into third place on countback. Remarkably in a rare occurrence, only one near pin was won, again Daryl was Johnny on the spot to take it on the second par three. Next week the bunker Boys are on the road with their annual trip to Hua Hin where the rain has been tumbling down lately, we hope it’s done by the time we get there. We are pleased to report that one of our regular visitors from the U.K. Keith Smithson put together a remarkable round of forty-five points off a handicap of I believe two, a splendid achievement, perhaps the senior’s circuit beckons!.

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Johnno Rises From The Ashes On Wednesday 21st August, 2019 at Royal Lakeside, John Anderson’s golf game was, to borrow a phrase from a former Australian Prime Minister, “ dead, buried and cremated”. A regular caddie suggested he take a couple of months off to re-group. It hasn’t been that long yet, but what was needed was a confidence booster, and what better place than Royal Lakeside Golf Course with it’s lush fairways, where the ball sits up begging to be hit, greens that are first class and run exactly as they should, and weather that provided some breeze to make conditions quite comfortable. It was just what the doctor ordered, a small step but an impressive one of 44 stableford points, his best ever points score. Confidence somewhat restored, a win and a long awaited next Green Jacket. But enough about me, there were another twenty golfers out there and some very good scores were

turned in, as we would expect at this course. Bill Copeland has been showing good form recently and made a credible 38 points to take a clear second spot. Then, on 37 points, a countback was needed, once again, to decide third and fourth places. John Pierrel, who is always near the leaders somewhere, got the decision by a whisker over Chris Barker. Excellent scores from both.. Then followed three players with 36 points, very handy on another day and another course, but, unfortunately, missing out here. Near Pins: Paul Smith (3) + (15) Takeshi Hakozaki (6), Dave Hewson (12), Winners at Royal Lakeside 1st Place – John Anderson (31) – 44 pts 2nd Place - Bill Copeland (13) – 38 pts 3rd Place - John Pierrel (12) – 37 pts c/back 4th Place - Chris Barker (12) – 37 pts Best Front Nine ( non winners) –

Nils-Peter Kristensen – 19 pts c/ back Best Back Nine ( non winners) George Mueller – 20 pts It’s a bit rough when 11 points on a nine wins the “silly hat” for lowest nine hole score, and there were two contenders. After a countback it was Greg Smith going from Green Jacket two days ago to a Green Hat today. Tony Manners watched as the scores came in so was already prepared to receive the “wig” as the lowest overall score. Not a big group today, but everyone had an enjoyable day out, and why wouldn’t you at this very fine Royal Lakeside Golf Course.? Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.

BILLABONG WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21ST EASTERN STAR STABLEFORD Due to Green Valley being occupied by the Singha Championship this week, the Billabong regulars played at Easter Star which I have not done for a long time and I was surprised at the changes that have been made to the changing rooms. New lockers and new showers are superb with room to

move around and to be able to change in comfort. The course was in excellent condition with greens that were, unusually, fast but Eastern Star is not an easy course and with a boisterous wind accompanying our every move, why is the wind always in your faces and not at your back, there was danger lurking along every fairway. As a result the scores were not overly impressive for 3rd place was occupied by Lloyd

Shuttleworth (5) on 34 points mainly due to four 1 pointers on the front nine. Eddie Bielby (18) had 22 points on the way out but, for some reason, the brakes went on and blobs on the 10th and 18th holes kept his score to 37 points and 2nd place. George Way (23) had only 2 points from the 8th hole to the 11th but from the 12th the wind caught his sails and he finished with 22 points on the way home and a total of 38 points.

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Patrick Devereux to an outrageous score at The Emerald On Tuesday 6th August we went to Pattavia. For one of our drivers turned the short cut out to a long way. Anyway we arrived all and had a nice day. The weather was good, however the rain in the morning scared some players. The course was in very good condition. It was an enjoyable day. It was again Dave Smith, who showed a consistent game. Nobody good follow him and he won with 40 stable ford points. The nears to the pin were Dave Smith and Paddy Devereux. Thursday 8th August we went to The Emerald. It was a cloudy day

and we felt some raindrops, but the weather was good. We had also a nice breeze. The course was in good condition. It promised again a day with good scores. It was the day of Patrick Devereux. He played a strong game and was super concentrated. The result was that he won with 48 stable ford points. The second best score in the history of our society. On distance became Dave Smith second with 34 stable ford points, beating Neil Harvey on the count back. The near pins were for Robin, Patrick and Stephen. GROWLING SWAN Played out of “Bogey’s Bar & Grill.” “SPAGONI’S DAY” “4 Ball Better Ball”. PLUTALUANG G.C. 15th of AUGUST, 2019. “THE BIG MAN WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD OF THE TURN OUT IN HIS HONOR!” To start this report I would like to thank the people that took time to Travel from Aust. To be here for this game; Paula & David Kinnane (Tony’s

Daughter), Tony Campbell, Aaron Shorten, Wayne Johnston, Mike MacGregor, Jennifer & Mick Seaton, Jason Grainger, Mike Maceknie and Monty Richardson who did not travel that far but joined us on the day! Well there is a lot that I can say but I guess the thing that pleases me the most was the turn out today to celebrate the Life of Tony Olcorn! This is an annual event and looking at the numbers it will continue on, support for this day has been excellent from both Australia and of course Thailand. We had 28 golfers sign up for today’s competition! How nice it is, on waking this morning there was not a cloud in the sky, given the recent rains we have been experiencing it was a relief that today’s event will not be rain

interrupted. The course was priced well as it always is, the course was in good condition fairways were clean and mowed, bunkers were not in too bad a shape and the greens were a little on the slow side. So the only thing that can go against us is ability. This course like most courses in the region is suffering from the lack of rain. It was a surprise to us all that “The Lighthouse Hole”, well you could actually walk from the tee box to the green, unbelievable! As today’s event was a 4 Ball better Ball, we were able to field seven groups of 4 26 men and 2 women which was good to see. We went from the front tees (women from the red tees) All rules were explained and we were all set for a good day. The Groups were as Follows;

Group 1 Peter McDonald Capt, Wan Mukmal, Ron Gillett and Tony Campbell. Group 2 Paul hack Capt, Denis Steele,Kevin Smith and Wayne Johnston. Group 3 Jayson Schembri Capt, Stu Rifkin, Aaron Shorten and Andrew Allen. Group 4 Steve Younger Capt, Rocky Lawson, Bernie McCart, and Monty Richardson. Group 5 Nat Rukkid Capt, David Kinnane, Jason Grainger and Dick Braimbridge. Group 6 Martin Kempton Capt, Brad Todd, Shane Young and Peter Grey. Group 7 Mark Stapleton Capt, Greg Proctor, Rob Cross and Paul Jackson. Well the handicappers got it right, as you will see by the scores there was not a great deal in it.

Unfortunately all those that were welcomed were leaving us except for Aaron Shorten and of course Monty Richardson. To all those traveling we wish you all safe travels and hope that its not too long till you visit us again! Safe travels! D-For was set free by Alex and the punters and players at Bogeys Bar and Grill were generous as always with their contributions towards the needy in Pattaya. All are thanked for this. PSC MEMBER’S TOURNAMENT RESULTS AT LAEM CHABANG MONDAY 15TH JULY 168th PSC MEMBERS TOURNAMENT The renowned Laem Chabang, designed by Jack Nicklaus was the course selected by Jack, the PSC Golf Chairman, for this month’s competition which was a two person better ball played on the A and B nines. The first tee time was 8.36, with 99 golfers scheduled to play from many of the PSC golfing member groups. Tim and Nigel manned the registration desk from about 7.30am and congratulations to all of you, as everyone who had signed up, turned up. How much easier does that make running a tournament when there are no no-shows. Complementing the day was beautiful weather and all was set for a great day’s golf. We were a little late teeing off on A, not helped by a group immediately in front of us ambling along as we stood watching one of them hit the ball about 10 yards, thinking this could be a dreadfully slow day. However, the marshals were quickly on it either moving them along or shifting them to another hole, as Jack took care of the start with all 25 groups streaming off the tee around 7 minutes late through-

out the whole tournament. By all reports, the course was in excellent condition, reflected by the excellent scores that were returned. The presentation at Links Bar in Soi Bukhaow, started a little later than originally scheduled, at around 6.20pm but no-one seemed to mind as Phil and Maurice kindly provided an excellent Lasagna and chips for all. When all had eaten, drank and reviewed their day, it was time for the winners to be announced. Nigel called order and expressed the appreciation of all for the generosity of Phil and Maurice and the introduced Golf Chair Jack Moseley. Jack likewise thanked all concerned including the PSC Staff who assisted in the preparation of the scorecards. The handicaps are published around three o’clock every Saturday afternoon and

being quite unusual for the PSC to hold a tournament on a Monday left very little time for everything to be completed; so well done girls and Tim for getting the job done. Jack also appreciated the support from the golfers, expressed his enthusiasm for the new PSC committee and commented that the future of the PSC is looking good. Before handing the microphone back to Nigel to announce the winners, he reminded the golfers that they were all winners today, as the PSC contributed 259 Baht to every green fee, thus answer-

Nigel then announced the winners; Vice President, Tim Knight managed the prizes and Treasurer, John Player presented them. 6th John Harrison (17) & David Arataki (23) 46pts (c/b 22) 5 th Kevin Labar (12) & Paul Lanzetta (7) 47pts 4th Maurice Roberts (12) & Derek Phillips (15) 48pts (c/b even to last hole, won on 17th) 3 rd Daniel Grob (11) & Urs Wandeler (11) 48pts 2nd Timo Kyte (17) & Andrew

4K HOME CINEMA

Having a home cinema system with big sound, has been available for many years now. The feeling of being in a movie theatre but with all the home comforts is one of life’s pure joys. Today, the sheer quality on offer is astounding, so I thought it might be good to bring everyone up to speed with the latest technology. There are many components to building your own home theater system. Let’s start with a projector. For a picture as you see at the cinema you’ll need to get one that’s capable of 4K resolution. When we talk about 4K for projectors there are generally 2 specs: 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 pixels. The more pixels, the more vivid the picture contents are. Other than resolution, the technology that’s used inside your projector to produce the picture is important too. DLP is the leading projection display technology on the market. The DLP chip uses a technology called pixel-shifting, which can achieve true 4K resolution with 8.3 million distinct pixels. That is to say, a DLP 4K projector can bring you a cinema quality experience with true and accurate color and depth.

Another key piece to your home theater experience is the source, or what you’re watching. The best picture right now comes from 4K Blu-ray discs using a 4K Blu-ray player. While you may be familiar with Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray discs have started making their way on the

market and offer improved picture quality if you have the right setup to take advantage of it, meaning, a projector capable of 4K, a Blu-ray player capable of playing 4K, and a 4K Blu-ray disc. So, what is true 4K? According to CTA (Consumers Technology Association), 4K UHD must deliver 8.3 million distinct pixels on the screen, which is four

• 4K-Enhancement Technology can only produce 4.1 million pixels by doubling the native 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, achieving less than half of the required 8.3 million pixels for true 4K resolution. What do you need in order to enjoy 4K HDR? • 4K Blu-ray player • BenQ 4K HDR projector • 4K movies or 4K videos (4K UHD

tem, the projector, and the HDMI cables used must be compatible

times the resolution of Full HD 1080p. What is XPR Technology? DLP XPR Technology is Texas Instrument’s pixel-shifting technology that helps projectors to achieve true 4K resolution with 8.3 million distinct pixels. What is the difference between XPR Technology and 4K-Enhancement Technology? Although both XPR Technology for DLP projectors and 4K-Enhancement Technology for other projector mechanisms are pixelshifting technologies, the results they produce are completely different. • XPR Technology produces 8.3 million distinct pixels regardless

Blu-ray sets come with two discs: one 1080p disc and one 4K UHD disc. Be sure to use the 4K UHD disc.) • HDMI 2.0 cable connected to HDMI1 port What’s HDCP 2.2? Is HDCP 2.2 compatibility important? HDCP 2.2 is a copy-protection file format, and all common Blu-ray

with HDCP 2.2. Also, an internet connection speed of at least 25 megabits per second is strongly recommended for an optimal 4K streaming experience. Furthermore, for 4K 60fps video contents, a 4K 60Hz-compatible HDMI cable is also required. Follow these guidelines and a whole new world of quality en-

of the DMD chip’s number of native pixels. In addition to doubling the 0.66" DMD’s 2716 x 1528 pixels, XPR also perfectly quadruples the 0.47" DMD chip’s 1920 x 1080 pixels to generate true 4K 8.3 million pixels with lightning-fast pixel shifting speed.

discs are protected by HDCP 2.2. For those who want to enjoy a smooth Blu-ray disc viewing experience without any hindrance, all the DVD players, amplifiers, projectors and HDMI cables employed should be checked for compatibilities with HDCP 2.2 decryption, so as to ensure the Blu-ray discs to be played properly. Can I stream 4K Netflix content with BenQ’s 4K projectors? Yes. However, as explained in the question above, since 4K Netflix files are also protected by HDCP 2.2, meaning that for all the Netflix packages you’ve subscribed to, the audiovisual sys-
