A neW stArt My struggle as a diabetic athlete (more on this in the next issue) was the reason behind the creation of Multisport magazine. Patrick Joson is a very dear friend who I entrusted the reins of this magazine with from its inconspicuous start more than 3 years ago to the pervasive and influential stature that it finds itself the local multisport industry today. A big ThAnK YOu to the guy who made it happen! Patrick will continue to be involved as editor-at-large (i.e., content contributor, resident brainstormer, and Multisport mag’s goodwill ambassador) as he takes on more responsibilities in his flourishing business as a multisport coach (he’s the only certified POSE running instructor in the Philippines, by the way!). We’ll still see Patrick regularly in his monthly column in the magazine, and regularly as coach in Multisport events. For this issue, a team of business executives and entrepreneurs share how they achieve work-life balance. Team PLDT’s bunch of highly driven and motivated class acts show us how the multisport lifestyle aids and fuels them in attaining their personal and professional success (p. 12-14). We tried to make this issue as “womanly” as possible, so we complement the Team PLDT story with a feature on beauty, brains and brawn: Doray Ellis, rizzo Tangan, Keshia Fule, Bea Puno, Kim Kilgroe, and Bea Azcuna—women athletes who represent the age spectrum of women who have made a dent in the Philippine triathlon scene (p. 8-9). We also feature the all-women cycling team Team David Salon (p. 02), the inspiring 3isgreaterthan1 girl friends Monica Torres, LC Langit, and Kim Mangrobang (p. 04), and the indispensable wisdom of Coach Ani De Leon-Brown (p. 04).

ormed in 2005, Team David Salon (TDS) is one of the longest existing cycling teams in the country and has been rocking the world of triathlon through their passion, commitment, humility, and team spirit for seven years now. A brainchild of Bing Alto with the help of Team Captain/Manager Kaye Lopez, TDS (consisting of founding member Marita Lucas and team members Carmela Seriña, nina Dacanay, Joyette Jopson, gidget Fernandez) continues to inspire and empower other female athletes to join and win in triathlon.

How was the team formed? team david salon: The team was formed in 2005. The formation of the team was the brainchild of Bing Alto, with the help of Kaye Lopez. They joined forces in the hope of finding corporate sponsors who would be interested in supporting a team of female athletes in pursuing their passion for multisport. They were fortunate enough to have found their multisport godfather in David Charlton, CEO of David’s Salon Institute. How does one become a member of your team? tds: We try to keep the team at more or less 10 members per year and have only one prerequisite: we only invite female athletes into the team. We take pride in being the only all-female multisport team in the country so we’ve decided to keep it that way. If she has passion and commitment for our sport plus a pleasing personality that jives with ours, then we decide as a team to offer the slot to her.

How do members of your team balance work and play? tds: Balancing work and play is a skill that we’ve all had to learn but at the end of the day, it is this symbiotic relationship between our job or profession and our sport that makes it all work. Just as we make work an inevitable part of our day, our passion for cycling and multisport compels us to allot time for training, whether individually or as a team, even if it means waking up extra early or using our lunch break to go to the gym. Time management is the key to living the kind of life that we choose to live.

What do you find most challenging as a team and how do you overcome it? tds: Managing differences in opinion is a challenge when you’re part of a team composed of incredibly intelligent and headstrong women. It is also difficult to get the team to train together due to work and family commitments as well as differences in fitness levels, athletic goals, and geographic locations. But at the end of the day, David Charlton’s passion for empowering women through fitness and his compassion for us as friends is the glue that keeps us together despite all odds.

What was the most memorable race you’ve ever joined? tds: Most of us enjoy doing the team time trials the most since it’s probably the only race format wherein we actually stay together and work as a team. The stronger riders take longer pulls and motivate the rest of the team to hang on even when it hurts. It’s a true test of teamwork and selflessness.

What are your tips to other aspiring cyclists, especially women? tds: Find your passion and pursue it. Seek guidance from knowledgeable and credible coaches and/or athletes. Set realistic goals and be patient with your progress. Stay positive and celebrate even the minutest victories to boost your confidence and keep you going.

T

he mad rush to cover miles to become Ironmen and Ironwomen makes us forget that triathlon involves a set of unique skills in each discipline of swim, bike, run, and even in transitions. Wisdom behind every workout must be of equal importance. For swimming, it is important to know the skills of buoyancy, streamlining and hip rotation. On the other hand, body position and cadence are skills needed for both cycling and running. All movements are based on the science of physics bounded by gravity, governed by newton’s laws of inertia. Knowing why and how we move in relation to our physical limitations makes us efficient. This method was developed by Dr. nicolas romanov back in 70’s which he called the "Pose Method." Dr. romanov states that our body goes through positions that react to gravity. Our job is to manage and to harness its force to make us more efficient. Whatever technique or method you use, it is important that you are consistent and precise in order to reap the rewards of whatever it promises. THE POWER OF THREE TRIATHLETE GIRL FRIENDS ON INSPIRING, ENCOURAGING,

AND SUPPORTING ASPIRING ATHLETES THROUGH THEIR GROUP 3ISGREATHERTHAN1 BY MINERVA MICIANO

T

hey say three's a crowd—but for LC Langit, Monica Torres, and Kim Mangrobang, this number defines multisport and, in friendship, their eponymous group, 3isgreaterthan1. Motivated to inspire multisport beginners, the trio try their best to share tips and personal experiences through social media and blogs. Having started from zero themselves, LC, Monica, and Kim have always believed it’s possible to start from nothing and achieve something great in the end. This has been proven by their individual achievements in swimming, biking, running, and most, in building friendships in the circle of triathlon.

How was ‘3isgreatherthan1’ formed? 3>1: In 2011, we witnessed the incredible growth of triathlon and endurance sports in the country. We then created together what was uniquely ours and would allow us to interact with the multisport community. Why ‘3isgreatherthan1’? 3>1: We wanted a name that signifies

what set us apart from other athletes/ bloggers. 3isgreaterthan1 symbolizes us as the top three Pinay triathletes who are also good friends. ‘3’ also refers to the three disciplines of triathlon–swim, bike and run.

What made you decide to put up a blog? 3>1: With several multisport events being held every weekend, and the growing awareness and support from the media, corporate sponsors and the general public, we started receiving a lot of recognition and messages of support and admiration through Facebook and other social media. Serious athletes, weekend warriors, and even total strangers started coming up to us at events, so we decided to create the appropriate medium for us to interact with the multisport community and share our stories with them.

What keeps your friendship aside from your passion in sports? 3>1: We share the same fun-loving and energetic spirits. We love going out together, watching movies, shopping and eating! Although we live far apart (Kim lives in Sta. Rosa, LC in Makati, and Monica in Quezon City), we communicate every day. We often have our complaints, but we're just always positive and supportive to one another. Aside from ‘3isgreatherthan1’s main goal to inspire, what other objectives does your group serve to one another and to other people? 3>1: We aim to inform. We post articles, videos and personal experiences about training and racing that newbies and veterans alike can learn from. We also post about events and activities that we support and want people to join. We have 2-3 promos/contests every month with free shoes, products, and race entry fees as prizes to encourage people to train and race!

ANI KARINA DE LEON-BROWN How long have you been coaching? ANI DE LEON-BROWN: I’ve been

coaching swim, bike, and run for 10 years. I’ve been into triathlon for almost 15 years now, on and off. How do you motivate your students? ADLB: I remind them of their goals, and

make up new ones for them when they have achieved the previous one. I have been prescribing the same things since I started coaching: passion for the sport, hard work, and smarts. An athlete who is successful will always stay motivated. Lay out the best possible plan for you to achieve your goal and stick to it. What are your tips for athletes who are just starting out? ADLB: Hire a good coach who knows

what he/ she is doing. Stick to your plan but know when to be flexible. Learn how to listen to your body and embrace the good (albeit sometimes painful) changes it is going through. The amount of energy you put into training is directly proportional to your success. In your opinion, what makes a good student/athlete? ADLB: I do not have a particular

formula or template which I give to every single athlete of mine to follow—everyone has a different style which will work for them. But we have to work together well as athlete and coach to determine what that is, exactly. You may reach Coach Ani De LeonBrown at coachani@gmail.com, www. anikarina.com, https://twitter.com/ anikarina, http://www.facebook. com/AniDeLeonBrown and through The Next Step Triathlon Camp Series Facebook page.

AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME MEET THESE WOMEN

MA. BEATRIZ AZCUNA, 41 Curiosity is what turned Bea Azcuna into an athlete. For her, defining the strength and capabilities of her body are just two of the things that she prioritizes. During the time that the running craze was still on, she joined runs week after week and that has been keeping her going ever since. Being into sports is not new for Azcuna as she has always been active since she was a kid. As she grew older, she continued engaging in different aerobic classes as well as water sports like scuba diving. From there, Azcuna realized that she would, inevitably, get into running and biking. Part of the discipline of an athlete is going to bed and waking up at a specific time. This only meant one thing to Azcuna: “[There has been] no more night life for me ever since I started training to run and bike. I must sleep for at least eight hours to be able to get up and start my workouts early,” Azcuna shares. As a personal motivation, she always remembers the words of her personal trainer, Jillian Michaels: “Transformation is not a future event. It is a present activity.” She believes that the mind is a very powerful thing. It can make or break a person depending on what he or she decides on. As for Azcuna, she decides to move forward and prove that she is an elite athlete that will not let any pain or discomfort deter her from training and forging towards victory.

TRIATHLETES WHO ROCK BY CHESMER MELISSA FORLALES

I

n all sports, discipline is an important factor. One should have discipline in order to perform well. An athlete should be able to balance work and play so he/she could reach his/her desired goal. In the world of triathlon, women are slowly emerging into the limelight and conquering the stage. It is not just men who rock—women are starting to get their share of the fame as well. Of course, women should not be underestimated. Aspiring female athletes in triathlon are champions in their own right mainly because of the tailor-fit training that they work with. What makes women stand out in this field is their perseverance and their ability to inspire beginners. It is not always easy, but they have to start somewhere. Through time and effort, six of these women emerged as the best among the rest and they continuously move male athletes with their beauty, grace, endurance, and strength.

For Doray Ellis, triathlon is the perfect sports for her because she finds it more challenging than the rest. If other sports let you focus on one discipline, triathlon lets you focus on three. For one, it is not easy to maintain one discipline, let alone three. And this makes athletes like Ellis commendable. According to Ellis, when you are a triathlete, your schedule is more hectic but this has not stopped her from excelling in everything that she does. And one important principle that she lives by, goes like this: “Train hard, race harder, party hardest.” She explains that it is essential to always listen to your body. If you feel that you are not in good shape for it, skip training and rest.

www.facebook.com/kimkilgroe

Kim KilGroE, 22 Kim Kilgroe is one of the youngest women athletes who rock in the game of triathlon. She started training three months ago and has been unstoppable ever since. “Compared to the controlled environment of an indoor track competition, there are so many more factors in tri. not only are there actually three separate disciplines to consider with regards to the athlete’s skill levels. There is really no knowing how the race is going to be for a certain day. That unexpectedness is exciting.” Kilgroe shares. For her, there are just two things to choose from when you are in triathlon–it is suffering the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret. As an athlete, Kilgroe’s goal is to exceed her own personal and mental limits. With this, she is not just challenging competitors, she s also out there challenging herself.

rizzo Tangan can’t even remember a time when she was not into sports. She explains that it is time management that brought her to where she is now. Apart from this, she also shares that her motivation for running the race with life is her kids. Tangan wants to set a good example for them. She basically tries to go for her personal best everytime and she is having fun doing it. Probably the greatest challenge that she is facing is finding the time and the technique to be better in her game. “ It is the biggest-and-forever challenge. And the ubiquitous and everylasting solution is: JuST KEEP TrYInG.”

Bea Puno looked at running as a form of exercise. never had she imagined that this would go on as something serious. Crossing the finish line seems like a drug for her, as she always feels exhilarated after every race. She says that she is different from all the other athletes because she always tries to compete with herself and not others. Training with Coach Patrick Joson, Puno was never pushed to the point of injury. She picks up scientific reason from everything that Coach Joson teaches. This is the reason why she is where she is now. “remember to get a good coach and stick to the training,” Puno says. After all, all it would take is discipline to make everything look so effortless. And compared to men? Women may not be as strong as men but they have the ability to outlast them.

Being inclined to sports since she was a kid led Keshia Fule to be an athlete. She admits that most of her days are allotted for training in order to achieve her goal of beating her own records or doing better than what she did in her last race. Fule thinks that though all athletes are unique and different in their own way, they have the same aspirations and goals in their respective sports. All it takes to be different is the amount of passion or drive that brings a person to achieve his or her goal. She believes that her journey is always the destination and this reminds her not to take any of her training process for granted. “I should take in, enjoy and appreciate each and every moment of my life”, Fule said.

What aRe the most common tRiathlon-Related injuRies? dr. gar eufemio: most triathletes suffer the chronic type of injuries, as well as overuse or over-training injuries. each component of a triathlon tends to put a certain body part at risk. for swimming, we see more shoulder and upper back problems; for biking and swimming, concerns are usually the legs and the lower back.

M

arathon training shouldn’t be such a big problem for people especially for women. In fact, women athletes are usually much better in distance/ultra distance running because of their superior resistance to fatigue, their tenacity to endure pain, and their higher body fat levels that are needed for distance running. One thing you have to keep in mind, though, when you decide to do a marathon is commitment. You have to commit to the training, the discipline of logging in the miles, and keep focused on all the positive benefits this will bring to your whole being. Below is a basic guide on how beginners, especially women, can train for a marathon and still have a life.

hoW can an athlete avoid injuRies? ge: proper understanding of stretching and warming up is needed and is an important part of every training. Learn the basics from the experts. use proper equipment (not necessarily the most expensive), and give importance to hydration and nutrition. do not overdo it, and give your body enough time to recover.

ON PREGNANCY

ON DIET/NUTRITION

 The menstrual cycle of women may affect certain physiological functions during running. running may reduce the duration of the menstrual cycle and it may also prevent ovulation.

 have a balanced diet. women are likely to sweat more than men, so drinking a lot of water is advised.

 On the other hand, running can definitely improve the blood flow to the fetus, thus enabling moms to have a healthier baby.  Babies of mothers who have been fit and have been consistently working out before and during their pregnancies were healthier, and weighed heavier.  Training program for pregnant women should be monitored regularly and should be done in an appropriate level to avoid any discomfort or difficulty.  pregnant women who are physically active have lower risks for hypertension.

 avoid cigarette smoking, consumption of carbonated drinks, and alcoholic beverages. These will increase your chances of being calcium and irondeficient hence, weakening your whole body.

ON TRAINING can give you more speed and strength without the side effects of taking chemical drugs.

 Training consistently (3-4x a week) can definitely make your first marathon experience a very pleasant one.

 Training in the morning is advised since it is safer for women to run in the daylight and allows them to focus on other things the rest of the day.

 start thinking of doing a marathon if you have 1-2 years of consistent running on your “running resume.”

 doing strength training will help strengthen bones and eliminate the chances of stress fractures and low bone density.

 alternate moderate/hard days with easy or rest days so you can recover faster.  running fast will burn more calories however running slow still burns more calories than most non-running activities.

he most common excuse that people give for not exercising is that they just can’t find the time. But these high-octane triathletes of Team PlDT smash that excuse to bits. Not only do they manage to train for their grueling competitions, but they also find time to meet the demands of top-tier corporate jobs or manage their own businesses. on top of that, they also find time to spend quality time with their families, keeping the latter their top priority. 12

Every single one of these triathletes train for a minimum of ten hours during the work week, and can log in as many as 15 hours at the height of training for a competition; that’s not even including the long ride, swim, or run that they do on the weekends. So how do they do it?

It’s certainly not by going without sleep, as team member Bobby Go will tell you. Aside from being the owner of G-Stop, a sports store that caters mainly to women, Bobby is also the father of three, and as full as his days may be, he is no stranger to working after hours. A self-confessed netizen

(slang for “avid internet user”), there was once a time when he thought that he could work and surf the web until 1 am and still compete the next day. “Maybe I was still cocky back then,” he recounts. “But I thought I could do it. I was okay through the [swim and the cycling events], but by the run,

“one thing that you have to understand is that this isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. so we have to learn to make use of the tools available to us and make them work to our advantage.” I [was having a hard time].” So now he makes sure he gets enough rest to face the rigors of daily training, especially for competitions. But that doesn’t mean he’s resigned to staying offline. he still uses the web a lot, taking advantage of technologies that help him manage his stores and stay on top of things, especially when he’s out of the country. Ed Francisco, on the other hand, stays connected all the time. A fan of multitasking, he admits to checking for voice messages or answering email even while on the treadmill at home. he’s also a heavy user of technology, and whenever possible, his smart phone goes wherever he does. “One thing that you have to understand is that this isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. So we have to learn to make use of the tools

available to us and make them work to our advantage,” says Ed. Amazingly, on top of being a triathlete, Ed, who’s also the President of the Management Association of the Philippines and President of BDO Capital and Investment Corporation, the investment banking arm of BDO unibank, clocks in 10-14 hours of training a week while juggling his civic, professional, and social duties, all while keeping his 6am to 11pm schedule. On the other hand, “team mother” Ting Joson takes her involvement in the sport one step further by introducing her eight-year-old daughter, Isabella, to triathlon. According to Ting, Isabella loves training and shows signs of becoming a great athlete in her own right. Because of this, Ting, with the approval of the team

sponsors, formed PLDT Tykes through which her daughter can enjoy the companionship and camaraderie of other sports-minded kids. This spitfire of a mom is the COO of Armortech International Transporter Corp. a member of the Women’s Committee of the Asian Triathlon Confederation (ASTC) and a race organizer. But as most mothers do, she knows when to disconnect and make time for herself by engaging in triathlon. She knows that the time she spends on the sport she loves enables her to be good to herself, makes her more efficient at her job, and better equips her to be a good mother. a challenge. Just like the rest of the team, this father of two believes in institutionalizing a healthy lifestyle, and advocates healthy eating as well. having to divide his time between his clients, his family, his love for diving, triathlon, and travel, Martin’s day is stretched indeed but he manages it with efficiency—it is, after all, a challenge in itself. “It’s all about discipline,” he states. “It’s about taking charge of your day and making good choices.” Together with triathlon veterans Peter Gonzalez and raul Cuevas who rack up more than a decade of triathlon experience, all the 45 members of Team PLDT agree: the key to balancing work and play is plain and simple—discipline. It’s the core of every athlete’s training, and the secret to being able to accomplish everything you need to do in 24 hours without having to compromise excessively.

LocAL triAthLetes rock subit 2012 BY LIAnnE BArBIETO

05.5-6.2012

On May 5-6, 2012, over 800 triathletes convened at the Subic Bay Freeport to participate in one of the most highly anticipated triathlon events of the year, the 19th edition of the K-Swiss ITu Subic Bay International Triathlon (Subit). Thousands more showed up to enjoy a day outdoors and to cheer on their friends, family, and loved ones competing in what has become the longestrunning triathlon event in the country. The first day of the triathlon saw spectacular performances from China’s Bai Faquan, Philippines’ nikko huelgas and John Lee Chicano, Malaysia’s Shimri Lim, and Japan’s Eri Kawashima, all of whom were strong contenders to top their ranks. nikko huelgas, the Philippines’ top male triathlete bagged the gold medal for the under-23 Elite class. Things may have looked bleak for a while as the 20-year old huelgas struggled in the swim, but he more than made up for it in the bike and run, snatching victory from his top challengers, teammate John Lee Chicano and

Multisport June 2012_060712.indd 20

Malaysian Shimri Lim. huelgas was timed at 2:01:41 in the 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run. Chicano, coming in fresh from a two-month training stint in Australia, was clocked in at 2:04:05, while Lim came in third at a very respectable 2:08:32. The day, however, belonged to the 26-year-old Chinese national Faquan, who finished the race in one hour, 50 minutes and 12 seconds and was a scant 24 seconds ahead of his fiercest challenger, Ireland’s Benjamin Shaw (1:50:36). Shane Barrie of Australia Barrie settled for third (1:52:09) after an unfortunate fifteen-second penalty, while Mehdi Essadiq of Morocco (1:52:52) and Christopher Felgate of Zimbabwe (1:53:26) completed the top five finishers in the overall male division. Japan’s Eri Kawashima meanwhile built a comfortable lead after the swim leg and padded her advantage with more than five minutes after the bike to turn the run leg into her victory run. The Japanese triathlete won by a minute and 22 seconds over 19

years old Grace Musgrove of Australia (2:06:55 vs 2:08:17). China’s Wang Yi took the bronze medal (2:10:48) while Macau’s hoi Long (2:10:53) and Zhang Yi (2:11:19) also from China rounded out the top five women’s division finishers. hong Kong bets also made their presence felt by sweeping the junior elite titles raced in the spring distance (750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run) with Mitchell More Sam (1:04:08) and Long Ching Chan (1:12:24) bagging the gold medals. Filipino bet Sixto Louie Lalanto (36:03) and Zoe Bowden of Malaysia (40:24) ruled the 13-15 mini-sprint category to complete the day’s results. During the second day of competition, Cagayan de Oro triathlete neil Catiil bagged the gold medal in the 2529 age group, completing the 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run race in two hours, 16 minutes and 38 seconds. Despite undergoing therapy for an existing back problem, August Benedicto came in second at 2: 20:37.

2 Much to his credit, he recorded the best bike split for the event: 1:08:50. In third place was national coach George vilog at 2:24:15, although he bagged the gold medal for his age group. Former top female duathlon Monica Torres relied on her strong performance in the bike and run leg to dominate the distaff side that attracted 24 lady triathletes. Torres anchored her solid performance with the best bike and run splits at 1:17:38 and 44:12 to highlight the fastest time among the female competitors at 2:31:41. She won the gold medal in the 25-29 class. Sandra Araullo-Gonzales, former SEAG silver medalist took second at 2:35:07 while Doray Ellis claimed the third spot at 2:41:44. Araullo-Gonzales and Ellis bagged the gold medals in the 30-34 and 40-44 age divisions. Other winners in the different age group categories were Eduardo Pertierra (male 18-19); Mervin Santiago and Kim Kilgroe (male/female 20-24); Jeff valdez (male

Although most participants were there for the love of the sport, there were prizes offered up for those who would distinguish themselves in the competition. Title sponsor K-SWISS put up prizes such as shoes, trisuits, and an all-expenses paid trip to the hong Kong ITu Triathlon Asian Cup event for the top male and female standard distance age-group finishers. Specially crafted medals were made for the Top 5 finishers of the standard distance age group categories and the Top 3 finishers in the sprint distance categories, as well as Team relay Category winners. Gift certificates were awarded to age-group winners. Age-groupers who registered the best swim time, best bike time, and best run time will be awarded with gift certificates plus cash prizes.

There was even a special award for participants who didn’t mind a little light ribbing at their weight. The “heaviest Finisher” was awarded to the heaviest male and female participants who finished the race. All winners also won free entry to the 2013 Subit. Finally, the event’s major sponsor, Century Tuna, donated cash prizes in the amount of P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000 for the Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female winners of the Century Tuna Supertribods search. Best of all, nobody went home empty-handed after all that hard work–all race finishers received Century Tuna beach towels and K-SWISS event shirts. Subit 2012 was presented by Century Tuna and organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TrAP) in cooperation with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Other sponsors included K-Swiss (title sponsor), Speedo, David’s Salon, Fitness First, Travelers hotel, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Gatorade, Standard Insurance, SM City Olongapo, harbor Point, Ayala Malls, and the Philippine Sports Commission.

EVENTS IBERET ACTIVE MULTISPORT 101 CAMP (LEG 1: RUNNING AND LEG 2: BIKING) 04.21.12 • 05.12.12

MultiSport Philippines, together with Iberet Active, the multivitamin that helps you be your multiBEST everyday, teamed-up once again to cater to the country’s multisport community. Iberet Active MultiSport 101 Camp—a six-leg swim, bike, and run clinic—kicked-off last April 21, 2012 at the Bonifacio High Street with a running clinic led by Coach Jojo Macalintal, an International Triathlon Union II Certified triathlon coach and head coach of TriMac Coaching. Along with award-winning triathlete, Monica Torres, Coach Jojo Macalintal shared the prime essentials of running—from proper stretching techniques to winning running forms. With a series of drills, the participants’ speed, coordination, and agility were put to the test, making them better runners at the end of the day. This event was followed by a biking clinic held last May 12, 2012 led by Coach Patrick Joson, Level 2 International Triathlon Union and a certified Pose Method coach. Patrick Joson laid down the fundamentals of biking including proper stretching, poses, and an array of biking techniques. With stationary bikes provided at the venue, all participants had the chance to apply key moves that are more than enough to boost their biking skills. Attended by hundreds of multisport enthusiasts who left with a new set of running and biking essentials, Iberet Active MultiSport 101 Camp’s first couple of clinics were sure hits to those who yearn to improve and even perfect their running and biking prowess.

sics, one of the leading shoe brands around the globe, has signed on to be the primary sponsor of the rising teams Scott-Soleus-MultiSport and Triabetics. Members of the team recently visited Asics shop at Greenbelt 3 on May 2, 2012 for their shoe fitting after the meet-and-greet with their sponsors held at the Hinge Inquirer Publications office in Makati City. Both teams were grateful and excited to wear one of the greatest running shoes in the country as they win races in upcoming events.

TEAM SSM MEMBER KESHIA FULE PLACES 2ND IN 20-24 AGE GROUP CATEGORY IN SUBIT

T

eam Scott-Soleus-MultiSport member Keshia Fule finished 2nd place in the Subic International Triathlon (SuBIT) event held on May 5-6, 2012 in Subic Bay.Fule, 24, shares that the uphill part in the bike leg posed a challenge to her during the race, and her preparation wasn’t enough to overcome this harder part of the competition. But despite those challenges, she still managed to finish the race and rank in her age group. “Finishing the race was enough to make me feel happy and proud of what I’ve just accomplished. You wouldn’t really know how you fared after crossing the finish line and I’m not really the one to assume either where I ranked, so finishing (and getting my projected time) was already such an accomplishment. When I guaranteed my win in my age group later on, it was just an icing on top of the cake!” she shared.

TEAM TRIABETICS SHARES AWARENESS ON DIET, EXERCISE, AND AMPALAYA PLUS PROGRAM BY MINERVA MICIANO

T

agged as credible advocates of diabetes awareness and prevention, the Philippine Diabetic Athletes’ Team Triabetics staged to be one of the reliable endorsers of Ampalaya Plus’ Corporate Social Responsibility project, the Early Diabetes Awareness, as part of the brand’s 10th year celebration in the industry. According to the Founder of Ampalaya Plus, Mr. Benson Sian, the commercial intends to inform the public about diabetes and impose the people’s responsibility to take care of their health. “Each member of Triabetics Team represents individual triumph in overcoming his or her personal battle against diabetes in pursuit of a better and healthier quality of life,” he said. The recently released TV advertisement highlights the story of Mr. Poch Bermudez, triathlete, diabetic, and President/Publisher of Hinge Inquirer Publications. “Poch’s story is something that many people can relate to. and unmindful of his health situation until he was diagnosed to be diabetic at 31 years old and weighing 280 lbs., Poch’s struggle to regain his health and his transformation from an unhealthy 280-lb. person to his current fit 180 lbs triathlete body is nothing short of inspirational,” shared Mr. Sian. Ampalaya Plus is a unique product formulated to help control blood

sugar, which contains Ampalaya, Banaba and Luyang Dilaw. “Amplaya Plus is an effective supplement for a diabetic like me. I’m happy with the commercial and I’m very glad to be part of it because it creates awareness on how to prevent or control diabetes not only for those who have diabetes but also among their families, friends, and relatives,”
