FROM THE EDITOR

It is with the utmost excitement that I welcome you to our first digital edition. Since the re-launch of our new website in July of last year, our traffic has grown exponentially and the response from you has been overwhelming. Some additional positive changes include the increased exposure to the brand and significant growth as it pertains to our international reach. Thus, we sought out to find ways to make Munaluchi Bride more accessible to a wider audience. So we took on the task of jumping into the digital arena...and here we are. I am so pleased to be able to share true love stories and stylish inspiration not just twice a year, but six times a year. Starting now, you can find all of the things you have grown to love about Munaluchi and more in quarterly digital issues which will be released in-between our bi-annual print editions . Also, in the coming weeks, you’ll be able to enjoy a copy of Munaluchi right from your iPHONE, iPAD, or Android devices. The debut Winter 2012 issue is all about you - the bride. After all, it’s because of you that we are here, ready and willing to provide the most modern and stylish wedding resource we can. In this issue, we had the extreme pleasure of working with Janie Medley from The Bride’s Cafe, and her Dream Team, Amelia Johnson, Dana FitzGerald, and Moya Minns. The floral shoot (page 14 - Oh Happy Day) they put together is nothing short of inspirational. I am truly inspired by the work they do and can guarantee that you too will be inspired. In the feature, you will find the most crafty and stylish ways to decorate and entertain. Aside from the inspiration you are sure to find in “Oh Happy Day,” this issue is packed with some of the most stunning fusion and destination weddings showcasing true and unconditional love. And as always, we present you with our favorite fashion finds from some of the most sought after bridal designers + expert advice from wedding industry professionals. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we do, and are truly excited about this new experience we have created just for you. As you browse through the pages, may you be inspired.

We wanted both bridesmaids to wear a grey dress, same color palette but a different style. I love to see bridesmaids reflect “their style” in the dress they choose...especially, since each of the ladies have a different body type. Since both of the bridesmaids’ dresses have flower details, I thought it would be so perfect to have both of them carry small bouquets of ranunculus. This bouquet is made with peach ranunculus and lamb’s ear. So perfect with the dress, don’t you think!”

The details were such a key factor to this shoot and we wanted the table to reflect a lovely lunch at the bride’s home with her two best girlfriends. TOP TIPS FOR BRIDAL GOWN SHOPPING Know your body type. Take time to research the shape of your body and what silouette is most flattering. Make sure you research details such as bodice shapes and fabric manipulations that are flattering or avoidable for you personal body shape. Bring shoes that you would consider wearing. Depending on the heel height, the feel of the dress will be different. When choosing shoes, keep in mind that they will be worn throughout ceremony and reception. Know the venue and wedding theme. You don’t want to buy a gown with a cathedral train and later decide on a beach wedding.
55
Do not forget alterations. Know your budget and stick to it but make sure to calculate alterations in your final budgeted cost. Bring a married friend. Previous brides tend to not have the fairy-tale goggles on but understand this special time for you. They have the best advice and patience. Always remember to have fun and enjoy the experience!

J’Antae Hall and Emmanuel Eloundou met in the Windy City, Chicago, and realized that they shared many things in common. Soon, they realized that the wind was blowing them toward something deeper and more meaningful than a good friendship: the warm winds of love had arrived and there was no escape. This couple had the most innovative wedding ever. Instead of opting for the usual wedding announcements, they decided to craft a unique surprise for their guests. Emmanuel invited their family and friends to what was ostensibly a surprise birthday party for J’Antae. They would soon understand that the joke was on them when they realized that they were witnessing a wedding between the two individuals they had come to celebrate. This innovative, South Beach style wedding party is truly one of a kind. www.munaluchibridal.com . DIGITAL.WINTER 2012

FROM THE BRIDE: “The decor concept was based on a South Beach-style white party with a heavy focus on LED lighting, acrylic and mirrored furnishings, vibrant colors and an extreme attention to detail (including uplit place settings, polished coconuts and neon LED straws to hold the frozen beverages). { began with a “Miami Minis” themed cocktail hour, featuring miniature appetizers and cocktails. The event then progressed into the follow-up segment, which included the surprise nuptials, not to mention the groom’s self-designed and styled orange tuxedo with a built-in vest and white trim, and the my vibrant-print gown and custom jewelry. The remainder of the evening included a blend of southwww.munaluchibridal.com . DIGITAL.WINTER 2012
ern and Cameroonian foods, a baked-to-order brownie-a-la-mode bar, plentiful cocktails and a jam-packed dance floor. Some of the key challenges to producing the event included keeping the true nature of the occasion a secret among friends and family, producing a wonderful experience within only 3 weeks (the wedding was expedited to accommodate an immediate family member’s international travel plans) and constantly reminding vendors that the desired outcome of the decor and overall experience was to be one synonymous with a party vibe rather than the more traditional wedding expectations.”

You don’t get that deja vu feeling often. You know, that feeling you have that you’ve seen someone somewhere before or that they’ve been a part of your life in some way. So, when that happens, the feeling is very memorable. Kristi Bivins and Joaquin Keller felt exactly that way when their eyes connected at an Xavier University reunion party. They later realized that their paths had, indeed, crossed - they had both been students at Xavier who occasionally saw each other around campus but never spoke. That would soon be ancient history where these two were concerned. Upon meeting each other, they never stopped speaking, visiting, walking, spending time, and finding love with each other. Their love came full circle when Joaquin surprised Kristi with more than just gifts and a party for her 31st birthday: he went down on one knee and asked the woman he knew he couldn’t live without to be his wife. Enjoy this breathtaking wedding full of the most beautiful cascading flowers you’ve ever seen. DIGITAL.WINTER.2012

FROM THE BRIDE “When I began planning my wedding, I knew I wanted a wedding based on elegance and romance. My main focus was to ensure that 10-15 years from now when we look at our wedding pictures I wanted them to be timeless. Having the wedding at the Botantical Gardens at City Park New Orleans, LA would allow me to do just that. The location was beautiful on its own! The ceremony was held in the Rose Garden and I wanted to capture the feel and look of the rose garden inside the reception. I wanted my guests to feel as if they were having a romantic dinner by candlelight with a loved one. I wanted to capture the love that Joaquin and I have for one another and share that with our guests. Somewhere down the line I knew I couldn't do it alone. I enlisted the help from Kandice Webster of Posh Productions, LLC. I saw her previous work and knew that she would be able to capture my vision for the wedding. Kandice helped me realize that there needed to be focal points for the ceremony and the reception. With the ceremony being in the garden, nature itself would be the focal point. Kandice met with my orist, Bella Blooms, www.munaluchibridal.com . DIGITAL.WINTER 2012
72
and they both ensured that we captured the moment of being in the rose garden. With nature itself being so beautful, it was agreed that we didn't want to take away from that aspect. With the wedding being at sunset, the park still had lighting from its annual celebration of "Christmas in the Oaks" . Along with a string quartet, this all added a special touch for the ceremony! In regards to the reception, the building (The Pavilion of the Two Sisters) was a beautiful structure on its own. I didn't want to take away from the structure, but to only enhance it. The pavilion is a large open room with concrete flooring with all windows from floor to ceiling on each side. This was the blank canvas I was looking for to create my picturesque wedding. The focal point of the reception was going to be the head table. That was going to be the show stopper for everyone! I knew that in the end, I wanted flowers, flowers and more flowers. Kandice ensured me that I was going to get just that - a floral romantic theme. It was my vision to have floral arrangements on the cocktail and reserved tables consisting of pink and ivory roses, hydrangeas, and dendrobium orchids. The head tables would consist of the same floral arrangements, but to get the romantic feel, the florist chose black magic roses placed in mirror boxes. This really provided the WOW factor. The florist did that and more to capture the romantic, elegant theme. The head table was situated in the middle of the room, allowing
DIGITAL.WINTER.2012

73
guests to view the table from each side. The head table consisted of the tall 9 light candlelabras, black magic roses in mirror boxes, tall cloud like floral arrangements, crystal clear candleholders and linens from Nuage Designs. I was so happy to have Z Gallerie nearby for the detailed items on the head table! The table was set for a romantic dinner. The only issue was how to accomodate the overflow of guests and still incorporate the romantic theme. Kandice worked feverishly on getting a tent to accomodate the overflow of guests. We were able to place the overflow of tables and guests into a tented area with its own bar and lighting from a crystal chandelier. The perfect touch for an evening wedding! As for the cake, I didn't want the cake to overshadow the floral theme. I wanted flowers along my cake; therefore, a basic ivory cake provided the canvas for the flowers. Considering I love flowers, it was only right to make the base of the cake full of roses. Besides, Royal Cakery is the best baker in the New Orleans area and we knew the taste of the cake would speak volumes! Cutting the cake to James Taylor "How Sweet It Is" set the tone for the delicious cake! A live band played nothing but old school R&B and guests never left the dance floor, providing for a beautiful evening!”

Jocelyn had her commitment to Frederick tested even before they said their “I do’s”, when they realized that he needed to have a kidney transplant. Throughout his kidney transplant and recovery, Jocelyn stayed by her man’s side, proving that “in sickness and in health” were not just lip service - at least to her. Frederick thought so, too, and proposed to Jocelyn soon after his recovery.

FROM THE BRIDE:
“When it came to planning the details of the wedding, we both agreed on two things: we wanted an intimate and relaxing day filled with personal touches, and we wanted to get married on October 28, 2011, which was exactly five years after we began our partnership. A destination wedding seemed like the perfect solution. After a scouting trip to Maui a year before the wedding, we both decided it was the perfect location because of its beauty, relaxing environment and incredible locals. My mother thankfully supervised the travel portion, and she www.munaluchibridal.com . DIGITAL.WINTER 2012

couldn’t have done a more incredible job. We wanted our styles and unique sense of perspective to be reflected in all aspects of our special day. The wedding aesthetic is really an artful blend of my more artistic bohemian edge and the groom’s more understated and traditional style. Being an live event producer by trade myself, I led the charge in creating the overall design for our wedding. I selected colors of corals, salmons, peaches and soft pinks with soft green accents that reminded me of a sunset and the natural scenery in Paradise. These colors would naturally complete the scenery of Hawaii without competing against it. The overall design concept reflected an organic take on Hawaiian chic. From the invitations to the wedding reception, the wedding displayed a theme of hanging orchids that truly felt tropical, unconventional and romantic. We selected an amazing team of vendors that perfectly completed our vision. I wanted a lot of very original ideas in my wedding so a lot of items, from my headpiece, veil and bracelet to my bridesmaids dresses that were designed and sewn and invitations, were custom designed.

For five days, 60 guests enjoyed wedding festivities ranging from a welcome dinner luau to tours and excursions. On the day of the wedding, we joined in union at Molokini Lookout, a secluded and intimate location with amazing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, mountains and neighboring island Molokai. The cocktail hour and reception continued on the lanai at sunset overlooking the water at Mala Restaurant at the Marriott Wailea. Guests enjoyed five signature drinks, including a specially made “Something Blue”, named after my favorite book The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. The guests danced into the wee hours of the night and participated in signing pieces of fabric for us to sew into a quilt following the wedding. The photographer, James Rubio, really captured the authenticity of the wedding moments in such a creative way. He truly created artwork out of our memories. The day really exceeded our wildest dreams. It honestly was the best week of our lives. “

THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS:
“For both of us, it was my walk down the aisle. For me, to see the look of love in the eyes of my guests and to look straight ahead and see the emotion from my best friend and know that we’re about to be married and to see my grandfather standing there to marry us with the Pacific ocean surrounding us and the most incredible sky, I couldn’t have asked for a better moment. One of my best friends sang the Dorothy Dandridge version of “That’s All” to a harp as I walked down the aisle on my daddy’s arm. It couldn’t have been a better moment. Frederick said that seeing me in that moment brought forth every emotion possible and he couldn’t continue his happiness.” - JOCELYN

{LOVE BIRDS} “Frederick said he loves my smile and bright personality most. My positivity, optimism, and sense of humor drew him to me because I was such a bright light in his life”. -FREDERICK
“He has the most integrity and honesty of anyone I know. His word means so much, and I can always trust him to tell it like it is which is such a rare quality in people. That’s why he is my best friend.” -JOCELYN

Natalie Crawford and Donald Beamer had a “Love Jones kinda meeting: they met at an open mic performance and love, somehow, opened the way. Natalie went to the open mic with a male friend who could have been easily mistaken for her boyfriend. In spite of this pretend obstacle, Donald was a go-getter - he liked what he saw and he was going to introduce himself to her, no matter what. That introduction led to a Facebook communication and, eventually, an absolutely committed association with each other that has grown from strength to strength. “It worked well for us to take our pictures in advance of the ceremony. I know the old adage about it being bad luck, but when you really assess where this tradition came from, you will see that it was born from arranged marriages, not reflective of today’s dynamic. Moreover, it allows you to get some high quality photos and not be rushed trying to fit this in after the ceremony and before the reception.” - Ambra

“We had a unique color palette – lavender with pops of red, and our wedding planner pulled it off perfectly. There were touches of real lavender in my bouquet, the boutonniere, and tied to the name cards for our guests. The linens were perfect shades of lavender and huge red roses adorned centerpieces of hydrangeas and lavender on tables with modern china. I loved the glamour and simplicity of it all.”

“Our event had several touches of various cultures we had visited while we were dating…and of course we jumped the broom. We wrote our vows on papyrus paper because according to ancient Egyptian history, papyrus can never be destroyed. Therefore, the commitment that we made to each other would last forever. Our signature drink was a drink we enjoyed while visiting Kenya called the Dawa. In Ki-swahili, Dawa means love potion. Finally, for our guest favors, we made candles with lotus flower oil which we purchased in Egypt where the lotus flower represents life, rebirth and creation.” -NataLie & doNaLd

When you’ve got a man down on both knees, you know he is so completely into you that he realizes how much he needs to have you in his life. George Bibb was so excited to ask Stacie Trott to be his forever-woman that he went down on both knees and, of course, she said, “Yes.” Then, again, with a relationship that has spanned a decade, George knew exactly what sort of woman Stacie was; he wasn’t going to let her go.

A wedding with an Indian proposal venue, a Jamaican bride, a Ghanaian groom, and a Mexican destination is a vision of true cultural fusion. Shari-Ann Harris and Kofi Sasu first locked eyes while studying at Rutgers University in Camden. Unfortunately, they were already in relationships with other people. However, their friendship with each other grew steadily. When their previous relationships had reached their respective ends and after much prayer and reflection, Shari-Ann and Kofi decided to take a leap of faith by beginning to date in 2009. It has proved to be a perfect fit! Shari-Ann and Kofi had a beautifully intimate ceremony with just twelve very special guests in attendance. From that day until the end, their lives will be an intimate ceremony centered around a party of two. DIGITAL.WINTER 2012

“
Our wedding incorporated aspects of Kofi’s Ghanaian culture. We had a minor theme of the Adinkra symbol, the “gye nyame”, which means “Without/Except God.” We placed this symbol in our passport invitations as a background, as a topper on our cake, and Kofi wore an outfit for the TTD [trash the dress] that had the symbol on it. Kofi’s parents wore traditional West African attire in our wedding colors. They looked incredible! Our wedding was very international iN a sense. I am from Jamaica, Kofi is from Ghana, my dress was from Spain, my wedding belt was from Israel, the videographers and my veil were from Canada, and the wedding itself was in Mexico. We never planned it. It just worked out that way! -SHARI-ANNE

Everything is a Remix: Why YOU Must Transform Wedding Culture a photo-essay by PARRIS WHITTINGHAM
Stephen Amritraj isn’t used to wearing a kurti. Although its easy to detect his Indian ancestry, Stephen himself was born in America and raised Catholic. Traditional Indian tunics simply aren’t part of his wardrobe. With support from fashion stylist Niki Hall (African American) and Indian luxury retailer exclusively.in, a charming ensemble has been paired for the occasion.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING By contrast, Uma (Stephen’s wife) was raised Hindu (also speaks the language) she travels frequently to India and moves fluidly between Eastern and Western traditions. Presently, she’s comfortably perched in a desk chair as Brandy Gomez (African American) and Melissa Paldino (Italian American) style her make-up and hair. In a few moments, she’ll emerge from a dressing room donning a custom blouse stitched together from several vintage Saris. To the untrained eye, this scene appears both normal and mildly uneventful. Look again and behold history in the making.
EVERYTHING IS A REMIX Unlike your parents generation, cultural diversity goes beyond the Black and White; its a full spectrum of browns, cremes, chocolates and caramels. Musically, its the fact that our generation was raised with hip hop; a culture where Everything is a Remix. Romantically, it's the likelihood that you’ve have dated someone outside of your culture. Professionally, its the chance that you earn as much as (or more than) he does. Historically, its the fact that you’re over 21 yet unmarried and that was unthinkable for a healthy women a mere two generations ago. YOUR REMARKABLE LOVE STORY Right now, you are among the most diverse, educated, politically progressive and socially connected women in history. Your passion for adventure, travel, art, history and career development are unlike anything the world (or your parents) have ever witnessed. Your willingness to create a more empowering and purposeful wedding celebration is exactly what our culture needs. Most importantly, this commitment will strengthen you, your relationship and family in ways you cannot possibly imagine.

We’re a husband and wife team who fell in love behind the lens. We went to the same college, and we were both photographers working independently, but it wasn’t until we photographed a music artist together that we realized how well we worked as a team... and we’ve been shooting together ever since! Somewhere along the way, we got married and decided to combine our different styles into something fun and creative. Ivy Weddings was the result of our desire to offer modern, personalized, and fun photojournalistic coverage to couples who love being in love. Our work has been featured on Essence. com, Munaluchi, Style Me Pretty, The Bride’s Cafe, Brooklyn Bride, and more. We’re based in Dallas but we love to travel, so drop us a line - we can’t wait to hear about your wedding! mattandivy@gmail.com 214.514.6122
