the Harvard Dimension What started over 75 years ago as a simulation of the League of Nations, Harvard Model United Nations today is the product of years of gradual refinement. Founded in 1953 when the Harvard student group that had been simulating the League of Nations since the 1920s decided to start a new simulation that reflects the new organization established at the end of World War II, making it one of the oldest Model United Nations simulations in the world. An initiative of The Harvard International Relations Council which is one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious student organizations in the world, hosts over 6000 high school students annually from around the world who attend the HMUN conferences held in USA, China and India.
True to the spirit of the United Nations, founded in 1945, HMUN strives to foster a constructive forum for open dialogue on complex global issues. HMUN emphasises on the in-depth examination and resolution of pressing issues such as international peace & security and economic & global progress. During the conference, students learn the importance of balancing national interests with the needs of the international community, while also learning about the powers and limitations of international negotiation. Delegates preserve their countries’ national policy while negotiating in the face of other, sometimes conflicting, international policies. The ratification of the UN Charter, October 24, 1945.

Substantive
excellence The staff of HMUN India is carefully selected to include knowledgeable and dedicated directors from the Boston conference and our sister college conference, Harvard National Model United Nations. Each of the study guides is carefully crafted for its respective committee and reflects a thorough research. The directors are highly committed to the ideals of HMUN India and the broader educational mission of Model United Nations, which results in well-run and focused committees. Delegates take back a new-found passion for international relations and greater awareness of issues that dominate the world. HMUN India 2016 will simulate 15 dynamic committees fostering meaningful deliberations over some of the most relevant topics today: the future of State boundaries in the Middle East in the Disarmament and International Security Committee, Rights of asylum in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Committee or the topic of Income inequality in Europe in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, among others. The Historical committees enable delegates to step back in time and revisit revolutionary discussions that took place in the world. HMUN India also simulates the Press Corps where delegates put on the hats of journalists representing some of the biggest news networks such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, BBC, The Times of India, investigating the latest developments in the Model world and crises affecting journalism in South Asia.

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL MESSAGE TO HARVARD MODEL UNITED NATIONS INDIA
You meet at a time of great challenge and transition. Our world faces an increasingly complex set of realities, from rising joblessness to growing inequality to the increasing dangers of climate change. Many people are disillusioned with the established order; there is distrust in institutions; and a general sense that the playing field is tilted in favor of entrenched interests and elites. We need to forge a common agenda that can help ensure that future generations grow up in a world of sustainable peace, prosperity, freedom and justice. To help build this future, I have set out an action agenda that focuses on five imperatives: first, sustainable development; second, preventing conflicts, damage from disasters and human rights abuses; third, building a more secure world; fourth, supporting countries in transition; and fifth, working with and for women and youth. The world’s young people have a crucial role to play across our agenda. You are part of the largest generation of young people our world has ever known – and in our times, we have seen young people turn the tide of history. I am counting on your continued leadership and engagement. By participating in this Model United Nations, you will hone your negotiating skills and gain insights into what it takes to achieve consensus and progress. Armed with these assets, you can mobilize and engage on the major issues of our day. From raising awareness through Facebook and Twitter, to joining forces in other ways with like-minded students from around the world, you can make your voices heard and drive political and social change. This is an era of great uncertainty, but also one of profound opportunity for individuals to make a difference. The human family now has seven billion members. Please help us build the future we want. I wish you great success at this Model UN, and I hope the experience will inspire you to support the United Nations and our global work for peace, justice, human rights and sustainable development for years to come.
- Ban Ki-Moon

To help track progress towards these commitments, a set of time-bound and quantified goals and targets called the Sustainable Development Goals were developed, these goals include reducing income poverty, hunger, disease, environmental degradation and gender discrimination, and are critical benchmarks to building a better world.
