It is our pleasure to invite you to The Ivy League Model United Nations Conference India, co-hosted by the International Affairs Association of the University of Pennsylvania, and MUNCafe. The University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League Institution and the oldest University in the United States. It is home to the number one ranked Wharton School of Business amongst other award winning schools and programs. The Ivy League Model United Nations Conference is one of the most reputed high school conferences in the United States bringing together over 3000 delegates from across the globe and is a unique academic, social and cultural experience. We are excited to bring this experience to India this year in what will be one of the largest and most enriching Model United Nations symposiums. This year’s conference will take place from November 26th to November 29th at the Kempinski Ambience Hotel, New Delhi. ILMUNC India will bring together over 1000 delegates in 8 distinct committees. We are pleased to announce our association with MUNCafe for ILMUNC India this year. MUNCafe brings with it years of experience in facilitating high quality Model UN experiences through its various International programs, training modules and conferences. Together, we’ve envisioned a conference that will provide an enriching experience for our delegates that will better them professionally and personally. This will be facilitated through numerous colleges and career fairs, personal mentoring sessions with current students and alumni, keynote speeches from prominent members of society and, of course, enthralling social events. A large part of what makes ILMUNC India so incredible is the commitment of its amazing staff. These leaders flying in from the University of Pennsylvania have a diverse range of majors, interests, classes, and schools – from International Relations to Finance and Biochemistry to Computer Science - and will act as mentors to all our delegates. At ILMUNC we believe in providing a complete professional experience. The ILMUNC India team is continuously searching for ways to make the conference more engaging for our delegates. We are proud to announce technological advancement in the MUN circuit including a groundbreaking mobile application. We are also proud to announce the concept of dynamic background guides as a supplement to traditional research material. These guides will allow constant access and interaction for our delegates, ensuring that they have the best possible understanding of the topics being discussed. Our delegates are the most integral part of our story and we’d like to once again thank you for choosing to be a part of the next chapter of ILMUNC India 2015. We are certain that you will walk away from this conference with memories that you will cherish for a long time to come. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments between now and the conference, we encourage you to reach out to us at info@ilmunc-india.com. We cannot wait to host you and your school in Delhi this November! Warm Regards,

Santosh Vallabhaneni Secretary-General ILMUNC India

Ivy League Model United Nations India 2015 is co-hosted by The University of Pennsylvania’s International Affairs Association and MUNCafé.

The United Nations The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 following the Second World War to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and enjoys extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

Model United Nations Model United Nations, popularly referred to as MUN or Model UN, is an academic simulation of the largest international organization in the world - United Nations & its various organs. In this unique simulation students assume the role of international diplomats & representatives of different countries in various UN organs like UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, WTO, UN Security council among others. The intense discussions, informed deliberations and unyielding negotiations culminate in many structured resolutions being voted upon by the participants, employing the procedures and protocols as the UN itself. The aim of a MUN is to develop universally acceptable proposals to solve some of the pressing global issues including poverty, health, energy & education, conflict, wildlife & conservation, climate change, imbalanced trade among others. Students shape the foreign policy of their countries, lobby their ideas, draft resolutions addressing various topics, and deliver speeches that could shift the stage of Model United Nations - all while standing in the shoes of the highest ranking diplomats from every country. There are hundreds of thousands of students who participate in conferences every year and ILMUNC is at the forefront.

Scale & Global Impact What originally started in 1920 as a simulation of The League of Nations, MUN today has been widely accepted as a powerful experiential learning tool across the spectrum of educational institutions. It is estimated that over 2.6 mn students from over 100 countries participate in MUN conferences of varying sizes and impact. The USA alone accounts for 60% of this number although MUN popularity as an educational tool is rapidly developing in other countries including India, China, Brazil & South-East Asia

MUN was a great eye-opener! It was unique to discuss important global issues from so many different standpoints. Sometimes we take an idea for granted and never look at the inconvenient flip side. It is all about that. The best part is that I got to interact & build a network of so many students of my age from across the world

The MUN ADVANTAGE SKILL DEVELOPMENT A MUN engagement helps a student develop a variety of skills which are useful for them throughout their lives. • •

RESEARCH Students learn how to conduct formal research, scrutinize official websites, read charters, international documents, etc. on a wide variety of topics PUBLIC SPEAKING MUN conferences provide students the opportunity to talk and deliver persuasive speeches in front of large audiences, bettering their pub lic speaking ability. DEBATING Students continuously engage in intel lectually stimulating conversation on controversial topics which allows them to voice their opinions and debate with their peers. WRITING SKILLS Throughout the course of the conference, students write resolutions that are often on par with actual international resolutions that are passed in the United Nations. TEAMWORK AND LEADERSHIP Students form blocs of countries which work together to formulate resolutions. These blocs require students to practically demonstrate their leadership skills and their teamwork. CRITICAL THINKING Students are often put through emergency situations throughout the simulation that require immediate response from them as diplomats.

ASSIMILATION OF KNOWLEDGE Students directly engage with diplomacy, international relations and discuss topics of prime importance in today’s world even as they develop an extensive knowledge about these topics and can draw upon this in day-to-day discussions. A GLOBAL, DIVERSE PLATFORM Conferences such as ILMUNC converge thousands of students from across the world providing them with an opportunity to interact. They often walk away from these conferences having made friends in various continents and learning about their way of life. Different people tend to have completely different perspectives on issues and it is indeed miraculous to observe how students bounce ideas off of each other and learn from their differences. FUTURE IMPACT A MUN experience is a truly a pre-professional activity recognised by various Ivy League Universities, Intergovernmental Organisations, Not-for-profits and many Multinational companies across the world.

The Indian Dimension Converging World’s Youth Leaders in the World’s Largest Democracy In our eyes, the ILMUNC India has the potential to transcend the impact of just another learning experience for students. We believe it can have a much wider & deeper impact. For us, it converges the future generations from across the World in this very country whose success will be crucial for everyone especially to all those who believe in Democratic Principles, Human Rights and Free & Fair Trade. There are very few places on this planet where the interplay between paradoxes presents itself as a perfect backdrop for an animated, argumentative conference by young people with an agenda to discuss, deliberate and solve some of the pressing issues affecting the World today. The conference city, New Delhi is one of the oldest capital cities in the world, steeped in centuries of cultural tapestry. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world with some of the most modern urban infrastructure even as it proudly houses India’s rich heritage in some of the finest museums, bazaars, eateries and shops.

The Grand Stage: The Kempenski, New Delhi ILMUNC India 2015 will be held at the Kempinski Ambience, New Delhi. This State-of-the-Art Hotel & Convention centre is conveniently located just 19 kilometres from Connaught Place, 17 kilometres from Chandni Chowk market and a 40 minute drive from the Indira Gandhi International Airport making it easily accessible by all means of transport. A Residential Conference For the first time, we are excited to announce that ILMUNC India will be a residential conference. The main objective is to ensure a high quality and holistic experience for our delegates even as this ensures the safety and security of all delegates. Also, by staying together, students are surrounded by their peers from numerous countries and cities around the world and engage with them even outside the committee rooms and the formal agenda. Students can thoroughly enjoy the social events and also partake in a special crisis committee session that ILMUNC India holds. We believe that delegates’ experiences at ILMUNC are defined just as much by their time outside of committee as it time in committee.

The delegate fest is a great way for delegates to unwind in the evening after a long day of debate. The delegate fest is themed differently every year and could include a cultural fair, live music, carnival style games, and much more. The theme will be released closer to the conference and will definitely get delegates excited for this night of fun and entertainment.

The Delegate Dance When the final session on the penultimate day comes to a close, ILMUNC India’s delegate dance is an event that delegates always look forward to. The event always receives excellent reviews due to its energetic atmosphere, a professional DJ, and state-of-the-art lighting and sound. There’s no better way to wrap up one’s final night at ILMUNC India than at our delegate dance!

Technological Innovation At ILMUNC India we strive to use technology to run a more efficient & memorable conference. ILMUNC India staff will employ a wide range of multimedia & technological platforms for enhancing the delegate & faculty experience in various areas including registration, training & preparation, calendar management & updates and crisis simulations. This year we have introduced a groundbreaking smartphone application for delegates and faculty advisers to have as an additional resource for the conference. ILMUNC India will also be introducing dynamic background guides that will act as a supplement to traditional background guides, allowing delegates to gather more information via multiple mediums, engage with their fellow delegates before and during conference, and receive updates in the weeks preceding the conference. The Conference Committees General Assemblies The General Assembly—the principal organ mentioned in the United Nations Charter—is the main deliberative, policymaking, and representative body of the United Nations. The General Assembly committees will be the largest at ILMUNC India and will give delegates the ability to debate traditional global issues in a larger democratic forum. This year, three of our hallmark General Assembly committees will be represented, and will address some of the most critical issues on the international agenda that span the entire spectrum of international relations.

1.DISARMAMENT & INTERNATIONAL SECURITY(DISEC) Topic A: Fourth Generation Warfare in the Middle East Topic B: Emerging Technologies’ Impact on Arms Trade

2.SPECIAL POLITICAL & DECOLONISATION (SPECPOL) Topic A: Territorial Integrity of the Former Soviet Republics Topic B: Maritime Dispute

3.LEGAL

Topic A: Diplomatic & Consular Mission Security Topic B: War Ethics of Drones

Specialized Agencies Specialized Agencies give delegates a chance to debate in a setting that is different from the General Assemblies committees. These committees deal with niche topics and are often set up by other UN bodies. The specialized agencies will be mid-sized committees at ILMUNC India.

4.HISTORICAL UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES ( HISTORICAL UNHCR) Topic A: Caravan of Death (Pinochet’s Chile) Topic B: Khmer Rouge

5.UNITED NATIONS OFFICE ON DRUGS AND CRIME ( UNODC) Topic A: A Drug Cartel Topic B: Police Response to Violence

Crisis Simulations Crisis committees are the smallest and most experienced committees at ILMUNC India. These committees usually simulate special committees and bodies that are not traditionally represented in the United Nations. These committees have a ‘crisis element’ where delegates are able to interact with the outside world to further their agendas. These committees have dedicated staff that reply to delegates notes and further the committee agenda through continuous crisis updates. These committees may be set in the past or the future. We are proud to announce some of the most exciting and innovative crisis committees at ILMUNC India this year.

6.CONSTELLIS & SYRIAN GOVERNMENT 2020 7.RECONSTRUCTING RUSSIA 1991 8.SECURITY COUNCIL Topic A: Limiting Military Intervention in sensitive Geo-political countries Topic B: Reforms of the United Nations Security Council
