History reflects past events and plays an integral part in our lives, which includes parks and recreation. It is incredible to understand the vision of individuals who valued open space, nature, parks, facilities, and programs more than 70 years ago in Mundelein. Mundelein Park & Recreation District was formed in 1954, and we are excited to celebrate 70 years of memories with the Mundelein Community. The fall brochure features a variety of historical photos and facts coordinated by our talented staff, Christa Lawrence and Debbie Engdahl. I want to thank Christa and Debbie for spending extra time researching, organizing, and sharing photos and history on “Throwback Thursdays” and within this brochure.
The District has evolved, adding parks, buildings, facilities, and natural areas. Parks and recreation provide many benefits to the community, and I am grateful for past staff and boards who made bold decisions to grow and enhance the district-wide park system. Mundelein Park & Recreation District has over 34 parks, multiple facilities, and numerous programs and services. I believe that this is one of the premier park and recreation agencies in the State of Illinois.
The Salski Family has spent 16 years enjoying Mundelein parks, facilities, programs, and services. When we moved to Mundelein, we witnessed growth, transformation, and innovation happening right before our eyes. Likewise, the District has grown, evolving to meet the needs and trends while honoring our history of “Connecting Our Community.” I am grateful to the Board for allowing our staff and me to lead the District and continue the legacy of creating memories.
Honoring those who have contributed so much to our growth is important. In July, the Board unanimously approved renaming Dunbar Recreation Center after Kevin M. Dolan, who passed away in October 2023. The facility will henceforth be referred to as the Kevin M. Dolan Recreation Center (or Dolan Recreation Center). Kevin was a Mundelein Park & Recreation District Commissioner for over 26 years. His passion for Parks and Recreation was reflected in his leadership as Commissioner and his roles with the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD). His leadership influenced the awarding of grants, large park and facility construction projects, intergovernmental agreements, fiscal responsibility, staff and board development, and much more. Kevin’s exceptional volunteerism has benefited our community. His impact will be felt for the next 70 years and beyond.
Our Mission Mundelein Park & Recreation District is committed to connecting the community with safe and quality recreation through diverse programs, facilities and open space.

The Park District was established September 15, 1954. Results of original election on the issue whether or not to establish the District, votes were 432 Yes, 201 No.
The Chalet, (originally called The Shelter), opens as a warming center. It was constructed as a 40’ x 28’ A–Frame building. Estimated to cost $4,000. The Lions Club donated $2,500 for the shelter–house’s construction, and a group of Army–corps engineers participated in the construction of the Chalet, helping with the building process and overview. In the 1980’s, the District built an addition, using the building for rentals and programming. It was demolished in 2017 to make way for the Dolan (formerly Dunbar) Recreation Center.
A groundbreaking ceremony is held on September 15, 1966 for the Kracklauer Building (Kracklauer Dance Studio). This building served as administrative offices until the late 1990’s when offices were moved to Mundelein Community Center.
The name Mundelein Community Park District is changed to Mundelein Park & Recreation District.
The outdoor pool at Mundelein High School opens. This was a collaborative effort between the High School and the Park District. It remained in use until Barefoot Bay opened in 2006.
The District leases the garage property at 418 N. Morris for a teen center. It was being used as a warming center for an outdoor ice rink. The teen center included activities like dancing, ping pong, ice skating and socializing with friends. The teenagers raised money for the monthy $200 lease through candy sales and other special activities.
Mundelein Park & Recreation District purchases most of Diamond Lake for $23,000.
Two donated houses were stacked on top of each other to create the Kracklauer Community House (also referred to as the Green House). One house was a Model Farm house donated when the Tullamore Subdivision was built. The other was donated by Jewel–Osco. The cost of building the rec center was $4,000.
Mundelein Park & Recreation District opens a public beach on Diamond Lake.
The District purchases the land where Diamond Lake Beach sits. The Mundelein Fire Department burns down existing buildings on beach property to make way for a new recreational building.
Diamond Lake Recreation Center is completed and opened to the public. The picnic area was added in 1981. Season passes were metal tags that had to be sewn on the bathing suit.
The Fort Hill Heritage Museum (renamed the Mundelein Heritage Museum in 2020) is moved to its present location at 601 E. Noel Drive and opens on July 4, 1986. The Museum features Historical artifacts from Mundelein’s past. It is a piece of history itself being repurposed from an old Soo Line train Depot in Mundelein. The depot was relocated over the course of two days starting on August 1, 1983. The building was divided into two sections, approximately 50 feet each. Roughly 30 ft of the building was removed as the entire building would not fit on the available space at the new site. The move cost $16,000 not counting extensive renovations.
The Regent Center is constructed. The facility was an intergenerational space which housed Big & Little Child Development Center and the Mundelein Senior Center. When Big & Little later moved to the Mundelein Community Center in 1997, the area was used for Learning Center Preschool. Today, active adults enjoy the recreational activities offered at the Regent Center. It is available for rentals.
The Regent Center
On May 1, 1993, Steeple Chase Golf Club opens to the public. This award–winning course was built on 200 acres of rolling countryside with 30 acres of lakes. Located in the Steeple Chase Golf Club is the Grill Room, a full–service restaurant and bar, year–round simulators, and Pro Shop stocked with top quality merchandise. In 1993, the weekday resident rate was $18.
The groundbreaking for Mundelein Community Center is held on June 3, 1996 and it opened to the public In December 1997. The building was constructed to address the growing needs of the community. Inside the Center was Park View Fitness, exercise studio, indoor track, a double gymnasium, Big & Little Child Development Center, and several multi–purpose rooms. The funding for the project came primarily from developer donations and revenues from Steeple Chase Golf Club.
In December 2000, the indoor pool opens at Mundelein Community Center. This pool is used for swim lessons, adult water aerobic classes and lap swim.
The Spray Park opens for free while Barefoot Bay Family Aquatic Center is constructed.
Located in Keith Mione Community Park, Barefoot Bay Family Aquatic Center opens in 2006. Barefoot Bay boasts a zero–depth main pool, tot pool, dive well, lazy river and three water slides. Barefoot Bay averages over 38,000 visitors annually.
Dolan Recreation Center (Formerly Dunbar Recreation Center) opens. In 2018, Dunbar Recreation Center was constructed due to an IDNR PARC Grant. The facility includes a gymnasium, dance/exercise room, general room space and full kitchen. The Dolan Recreation Center has rental spaces available. Several District events are held here. Before and after school care and camps utilize the general room space extensively.
A groundbreaking for an Inclusive Space at Kracklauer Park is held on June 19, 2024. This park renovation will include an All–Inclusive Playground plus additional

Betsey Means as Jane Addams (Ages 50+)
Jane Addams was a crusader for social justice, a dedicated American who devoted her life to caring for the underprivileged and oppressed and fighting for the rights of workers, women, and children. In 1887, on one of her many trips to Europe, she observed the social experimentations at Toynbee Hall in London; this led to her decision to establish a similar center in Chicago, where she could put her principles into action. Chicago's Hull House would later become known as one of the most famous settlement houses in America. Addams is considered by many a pioneer in the field of modern social work. In 1931 she was co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Lunch will include Broasted Chicken, Baked Mostaccioli, and Salad catered by Emils of Mundelein.

This great holiday tour starts with a late afternoon departure as we are off to dinner at the landmark White Fence Farm Restaurant for its proclaimed “World’s Greatest Chicken”. Beautifully decorated for the holidays, the restaurant has served travelers on what was once old historic US Route 66 since 1926. The famous chicken is pressure-cooked thoroughly before being flash-fried for only three minutes and is delivered immediately to your table, always hot, golden, crispy, and delicious, along with their famous relishes, corn fritters, mashed potatoes, and gravy. A special holiday treat is then in store for you at Morton Arboretum’s, “Illumination Tree Lights at the Arboretum.” Illumination is a spectacular holiday lights display using amazing new technology. Early evening, walk along a paved path to see the beautiful Christmas lights glowing with dazzling LED lights in the trees. You will not only see them but interact with them as well! You can hug a tree to make it glow brighter, sing to a tree to watch it change color, and swipe your hand to make it do both. The Mundelein Parks Foundation encourages health and recreation for the community through funding efforts that help promote and enhance facilities, services, programs, parks and special projects. We are a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization governed by an independent, voluntary board.
The foundation seeks to strengthen community and family ties with a self–generating funding source. Our goal is to help park users and lovers become park givers and stewards. When you invest in the parks, you are investing in the quality of life of the Mundelein community.
Offer program scholarships to financially disadvantaged Mundelein Park & Recreation District residents so they can learn new skills and enhance their quality of life.
Support the preservation of land and open space and the improvement of facilities and parks.
Assist with funding capital development projects as we build an even better park district.
Preserve our past with a donation to Mundelein Heritage Museum. Funds will be used for educational program expansion, local historical preservation, and museum enhancements.
