Message from Marissa

Dear Regent Center Members,

Fall is my favorite season and I’m excited for all of the fun events, programs, and trips we have planned. A few to note that are just around the corner: Wandering Tree Estates in Barrington, Betsey Means as Jane Addams, and Senior Homecoming at the Libertyville Senior Center. Please note the deadlines for each of these programs. They are a vital part of the planning and execution, so make sure to register in a timely manner. I am also excited to introduce Pilates to our exercise schedule. This class will involve getting down on the ground, which is a vital skill as you age, so don’t be afraid to attend this class and strengthen your core.

Athens and the Greek Islands, Montreal and Quebec City Christmas, and Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights are all closed and on a waitlist basis. Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria is open for another two months, but several aspects of this trip are sold out such as business class flights, single rooms, and the trip extension in Vienna. We have just started selling Yellowstone and the Wild West, and I am now advertising Italy’s Amalfi Coast. I’m in the process of scheduling our informational meetings about both of those trips and will have that information out to everyone shortly.

Lastly, I want to thank Sue Poletto and congratulate her on her retirement from Mundelein Park and Recreation District. She will still assist us with our day trips, but you won’t see her bright face in the office regularly anymore. Sue has been a vital team member at the Park District for over 15 years. She has worked at Steeple Chase Golf Course, Park View Fitness Center, Barefoot Bay concession stand, and then finally the Regent Center. The Park District truly wouldn’t be the same without her.

Stay well, Marissa Moravec

I & M Canal

Friday, October 11, 8:15 am–4:15 pm

Cost: $110 member/$130 nonmember

Prog: 0052.23.3

Registration Deadline: September 15

Visit two of North Central Illinois’ most unique attractions, the Westclox Museum, the LaSalle Canal Boar, and the Lock 16 Visitor’s Center in LaSalle, IL. The Lock 16 Visitor’s Center features exhibits and multimedia about the historic Illinois and Michigan Canal. The Canal, a 96-mile hand-dug waterway, connected the Illinois River with Lake Michigan and opened in 1848. Next attend a Mule Tending 101 class where you will learn about the care and feeding of Larry & Mo, the mules who pull the LaSalle Canal boat, plus a little history of these animals on the I & M Canal during the 19th century. Then enjoy a boat ride on the replica 1800s canal boat pulled by the mules we learned about on the I & M Canal. On this relaxing ride, guides dressed in canal-era uniforms tell the story of how the Canal changed Illinois history. A great lunch is planned at the Lock 16 Café.

Illumination & White Fence Farm

Wednesday, December 4, 3–9 am

Cost: $130 member/$155 nonmember

Prog: 0053.23.3

Registration Deadline: November 4

This great holiday tour starts with a late afternoon departure as we are off to dinner at the landmark White Fence Farm Restaurant for its proclaimed “World’s Greatest Chicken”. Beautifully decorated for the holidays, the restaurant has served travelers on what was once old historic US Route 66 since 1926. The famous chicken is pressure-cooked thoroughly before being flash-fried for only three minutes and is delivered immediately to your table, always hot, golden, crispy, and delicious, along with their famous relishes, corn fritters, mashed potatoes, and gravy. A special holiday treat is then in store for you at Morton Arboretum’s, “Illumination Tree Lights at the Arboretum.” Illumination is a spectacular holiday lights display using amazing new technology. Early evening, walk along a paved path to see the beautiful Christmas lights glowing with dazzling LED lights in the trees. You will not only see them but interact with them as well! You can hug a tree to make it glow brighter, sing to a tree to watch it change color, and swipe your hand to make it do both. Enjoy a cozy fire and some hot chocolate and stop in at the Visitor’s Center to see other themed displays. Please note this trip does require about 1 mile of walking.

Jane Addams was a crusader for social justice, a dedicated American who devoted her life to caring for the underprivileged and oppressed and fighting for the rights of workers, women, and children. In 1887, on one of her many trips to Europe, she observed the social experimentations at Toynbee Hall in London; this led to her decision to establish a similar center in Chicago, where she could put her principles into action. Chicago's Hull House would later become known as one of the most famous settlement houses in America. Addams is considered by many a pioneer in the field of modern social work. In 1931 she was co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Lunch will include Broasted Chicken, Baked Mostaccioli, and Salad catered by Emils of Mundelein.

These Precious Days: Essays by Ann Patchett

At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce

her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both.

It is human nature to dwell on what isn’t going right rather than what is. This stress can take years off of your healthy life. Spend an hour each week at the Regent Center in a formal setting, thinking about three good things about your day. Then take those skills and journal at home about three good things that happened to you that day. It may be a person you’re grateful for, something you learned, the sun shining, or your community at the Regent Center! The fee includes the price of your gratitude journal materials.
