VULCANO The Icona Vulcano embodies the best in Italian design and engineering. Set up by Claudio Lombardi and his team to a very usable 680 horsepower through a short gear semi-automated paddle shift gearbox from MODENA, all encased in a beautiful design featuring voluptuous and harmonious shapes, this is the car which brings together the Beauty and the Beast.

GENESIS

INSPIRATION From the mesmerising molten lava and ferocious power of Mount Vesuvius to the frightening velocity of a stealth bomber and the sculptural curves of Zaha Hadid’s architectural masterpieces, the Icona Vulcano was inspired by symbols of power and beauty, both man-made and created by Mother Nature.

INSPIRATION Inspired by advanced architecture such as works by Zaha Hadid and Asymtote, the formal language draws also from advanced design airplanes, very suited to the hypercar ergonomics.

GENESIS

SKETCHES The Vulcano uses a consistent theme of dynamic triangles set in horizontal symmetry, reminiscent of the ICONA logo, which balance the dynamism of the volume. To connect the features and divide each part, tight lines complement the voluptuous shape, enhancing the car’s sensual power.

MODEL The right balance between aggressive power and harmonious beauty was truly resolved in the clay model process. After many weeks of Âź scale clay model development, the model was further refined in 3D with the inclusion of prefeasibility checks, including ergonomy, crash tests and aerodynamics.

INTERIOR Concept Made principally from carbon fibre and black alcantara and with fully adjustable leather bucket seats, the high tech interior has a race inspired feel. The interior design is driver-oriented, with functions such as GPS, radio and car diagnostics combined in a single large touchscreen, while all elements in the overall design have been integrated in a sophisticated and refined way.

“The most challenging design issue was how to balance power and beauty. We found the right balance by looking for the greatest simplicity. - Samuel Chuffart, Icona Deisgn Director

This is a brand new car. As in, brand new. It’s the first model to come from Icona – not to be confused with those fine purveyors of chilli sauce, Encona – which is a company specialising in the thing we admire most here at Top Gear. Poweeerrr. - Top Gear

“A Sculptured Missile! Ondulating curves, a tapered silhouette, and tormented plastic: this signorina in a dress of fire isn’t given to discretion. There is a never-ending hood and generously scooped-out shark’s mouth, and the passenger compartment sits firmly on the rear axle and its sculptured hips. This new arrival is banking on a figure as flattering as it is convincing.” - Auto Journal France

TITANIUM: A WORLD FIRST This one-off creation from Italian designhouse Icona is a world first with its unique titanium and carbon fiber body. The naked titanium body is a sculpture revealing its one thousand hours of hand crafted work in the most pure form. The Vulcano’s strongly sculpted body side and voluptuous shapes evacuate the hot air from the engine and reduce air turbulence generated by the wheels. “Inspiration for the Vulcano came from the world’s fastest plane, the Blackbird SR-71, whose sharp and dramatic silhouette complementary its sensual surface transitions was key to the styling of the Vulcano.” - Icona design director Samuel Chuffart

35

SUPERCAR MASTERMIND The Vulcano Titanium was built by Cecomp, an Italian coachbuilder with a long and glorious history. The powertrain is the work of Claudio Lombardi, ex- Scuderia Ferrari director and mastermind of numerous world champion cars. Also key was Mario Cavagnero, the man behind the Lancia Racing team and father of the engine of many championship-winning cars, such as the famous Lancia Integrale and 037, as well as the complete Peugeot T16 family. In his words, “A champion car is made from drivability, how well a man can feel the machine and the real performance comes with the art of bringing the optimum amount of power to the wheels.

36

BUILD The Icona Vulcano was coachbuilt by CECOMP, founding partner of ICONA and one of the global leaders in modelling and prototyping in the automotive industry. For over thirty years, CECOMP has been giving shape to ideas developed by designers, style centres and research and development institutes for vehicle manufacturers worldwide. CECOMP is involved in all stages of the vehicle life cycle: style development, prototype build, preindustrialization and industrialization, from the Ferrari 575M SuperAmerica to the latest BMW Coupe Zagato and the production of the Bollore electric car.

The carbon fiber seats are the latest design made by the supercar reference name SABELT, Torino. The one off interior trim is made using the best Alcatara and leather from Poltrona Frau. The meticulous workmanship comes from D’Arras, a company which works only for the most demanding customers of rare cars and are able to combine the most high-tech machine work with traditional hand skills.

BUILD The Vulcano (volcano in Italian) has a midfront engine calibrated for homologated road and race use with an optimum balance of usability and efficiency. Able to be tuned to well over 1000 horsepower should the owner demand it, the optmized 670 horsepower and 840 N/m of its supercharged V8 is sourced from the record-beating ZR1 and is coupled with a paddleshift close ratio gearbox from Automac Modena, allowing 0 to 60 miles/ hr in 2.8 seconds and 200 km/ hr in 8.8 seconds. With its bare handcrafted titanium body, this beautiful and voluptuous 350 km/hr hypercar definitely brings together the Beauty and the Beast!.

AERODYNAMICS Vulcano has been subjected to long hours of aerodynamic studies in computer simulation. To optimize the car’s handling capability as well as its high speed capability a twin layered diffuser as well as a retractable rear wing complete the race capability set up.

ICONA Icona is an Italian design house with offices in Torino, Italy and Shanghai. The company was founded in 2010 by Teresio Gigi Gaudio, former CEO of Stile Bertone, together with Cecomp and Tecnocad, two hugely experienced and highly respected prototype and engineering companies also based in Torino. Samuel Chuffart, Icona’s design director, is a former designer at Nissan Infinity and Jaguar Land Rover Group. Most recently chief designer at Stile Bertone, he is responsible for the new design language of sensual shapes and sharp lines which received international acclaim on the Vulcano and its predecessor, the Icona Fuselage, a showcar presented in Shanghai in 2011. In 2012, Icona began its collaboration with Claudio Lombardi, former Scuderia Ferrari director and founder of the company AIPA, which creates race cars and develops engines for the most prestigious names in the car industry. Under the direction of Mr. Lombardi, AIPA also benefits from Italtecnica founder Mario Cavagnero’s expertise in combustion engine development. Whether developing the Maserati MC-12 engine, or testing engines for General Motors, AIPA’s team excels. They have been entrusted with the development of scores of race cars, many that have gone on to become legends: the Lancia Delta Integrale, the Peugeot 205 and 405 T16, to name but a few. For more than 25 years, Italtecnica has collaborated with the major design houses, principally with Pininfarina, for the construction of “One Off” cars for clients such as the Sultan of Brunei, and for the transformation of individual Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, etc
