MENSAGEM Promover o livre acesso à cultura é valorizar a essência do ser humano, aquilo que nos dis ngue e que nos une, a capacidade cria va de reinventar a realidade através de diferentes perspe vas numa linguagem universal de tolerância: a arte! É esta riqueza, esta diversidade que engrandece o Ciclo de Exposições para 2020 patente nos 3 espaços de exposição, sob coordenação da Câmara Municipal de São Brás de Alportel, e que abre livremente as suas portas ao longo do ano. Os espaços de cultura, a Galeria Municipal, o Centro de Artes e O cios e o Centro Museológico de Alportel, renascem com exposições de colecionismo, pintura, escultura, cerâmica, fotografia, reciclagem de móveis, ferro forjado, madeira, entre muitos outros materiais que ganham forma pela mão de ar stas locais, regionais e do mundo. No úl mo mês do ano, a Galeria Municipal abre portas à solidariedade, reservando nesta edição uma exposição de escultura sobre o património cultural do Algarve, pela mão dos utentes da Associação de Saúde Mental do Algarve. Neste âmbito, felicito todos os ar stas que dão vida a este novo ciclo de exposições e que promovem a consciência cívica e a inclusão através da criação ar s ca. MESSAGE Promoting free access to culture equates to enhancing the essence of what it means to be human, what distinguishes us and unites us, the creative capacity to reinvent reality through different perspectives in a universal language of tolerance: art! It is this richness, this diversity that aggrandises the Cycle of Exhibitions for 2020; coordinated by São Brás de Alportel Municipal Council, it will occupy three exhibition spaces and will be freely open to the public throughout the year. These cultural spaces – the Municipal Gallery, the Centro de Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts Centre) and Alportel Museum Centre – will come alive with exhibitions of collections, paintings, sculptures, photography, recycled furniture, wrought iron, wood and many other materials, all shaped by the hand of local, regional and international artists. In December, the Municipal Gallery opens its doors to charity; in this edition, space will be reserved for an exhibition of sculpture focusing on the Algarve's cultural heritage and created by the members of the Algarve Mental Health Association. As such, I would like to congratulate all of the artists who will bring this new exhibition cycle to life and who promote civic awareness and inclusion through artistic creation. O CORREIO NO ALGARVE BREVE ABORDAGEM HISTÓRICA ATRAVÉS DO COLECIONISMO THE POSTAL SERVICE IN THE ALGARVE: A Brief History Through Collecting
AMIGOS DA FILATELIA 01 FEVEREIRO 29 FEBRUARY Este ano, comemoram-se os 500 anos da criação dos correios em Portugal. Uma data assinalada em vários países europeus com a emissão de selos EUROPA denominadas “Rotas postais antigas”. Os Amigos da Filatelia trazem a São Brás de Alportel uma exposição de colecionismo que tem por base estes dois temas. No Algarve, o documento mais antigo, relativo aos correios, data de 4 de novembro de 1702. Desde então, muito se passou, estando o Correio extremamente associado à história da maioria das localidades algarvias. Estas e outras curiosidades são reveladas nesta exposição. This year is the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese Post Office. A date commemorated in a number of European countries by the stamp issue EUROPE named “Ancient postal routes”. Os Amigos da Filatelia will be exhibiting some of the items in their collections that relate to the two themes. In the Algarve, the oldest document relating to the postal service dates from 4 November 1702. Much has happened in the interim and there is now a strong connection between the Post Office and the history of most places in the Algarve. These and other interesting facts will be revealed at this exhibition.

HORTENSE LÓIOS E DUDA DIAS 03 MARÇO 31 MARCH Hortense Lóios e Duda Dias, licenciadas, em Filologia Românica e em Sociologia, respetivamente, dedicam grande parte da sua vida aos hobbies da pintura e fotografia. Aperfeiçoaram estas artes através de formação constante com professores da região. Têm percorrido o país onde têm encontrado recantos e pormenores que revelam a alma portuguesa. Janelas, portas e postigos da nossa terra motivaram a reunião das artistas que decidiram eternizar através da pintura e da escultura os seus pormenores que, em determinados momentos, lhes suscitaram curiosidade sobre o mistério e a história que encerram. Hortense Lóios and Duda Dias, graduates in Romance Philology and Sociology, respectively, devote a large part of their time to their hobbies of painting and photography. They have perfected their skills by training constantly with instructors from the region. They have travelled all over the country to find special places and details that reveal the Portuguese soul. Windows, doors and wicket doors from around our land brought the artists together and they decided to record them for posterity by painting and sculpting the details that aroused their curiosity about the mysteries and history within.

DOIS ARTISTAS, DUAS TÉCNICAS TWO ARTISTS, TWO TECHNICS Tapeçaria e Pintura /Tapestry and Painting
FRANÇOISE DEVROEDE & RAYMOND PARFAIT 02 ABRIL 30 APRIL A artista belga Françoise Devroede faz parte de uma nova geração de artistas dedicados à criação de tapeçarias de alto liço, que perpetuam esta arte que notabilizou a Flandres desde a Idade Média. As suas tapeçarias, clássicas ao nível dos materiais e da tecelagem, são decididamente contemporâneas no seu design. O jogo de formas, curvas, cores e reflexos transcende a realidade objetiva conferindo-lhe mistério. Raymond Parfait nasceu na Alemanha. Ao longo da sua vida conciliou uma carreira na indústria biomédica com a pintura e a cerâmica. Fascinado pelas luzes, cores, paisagens e pela arquitetura tradicional do Algarve, escolheu imortalizá-las através da suas aguarelas, retratos e pinturas a óleo. Françoise Devroede belongs to a new generation of artists devoted to the creation of high-warp tapestries, who perpetuate this art that made Flanders famous in the Middle Ages. Her tapestries, while the materials and weaving are classical, the design is decidedly contemporary. The game of shapes, curves, colours and reflections transcends objective reality, giving it a mysterious quality. Raymond Parfait was born in Germany. He painted and created ceramic art alongside his career in the biomedical industry. Fascinated by the lights, colours, landscapes and traditional architecture of the Algarve, he decided to immortalize them in his water colours, portraits and oil paintings.

Reaproveitar e restaurar peças de mobiliário antigo e dar-lhe um toque especial que as torna únicas é uma paixão de Tânia Lourenço, responsável pelo projeto ColorStory que está sedeado na vila de São Brás de Alportel. Nesta exposição vai ter oportunidade de conhecer peças únicas e trabalhadas com o toque, a sensibilidade e mestria da artista que as concebe como se cada peça fosse … uma História de cor! Recycling and restoring old pieces of furniture and giving them a special touch that makes them unique is Tânia Lourenço's passion. She is in charge of the ColorStory project, which is based in the town of São Brás de Alportel. This exhibition will let you discover unique pieces that have been worked on with the touch, sensitivity and mastery of an artist who has designed them as though each one were... a Story of Colour!

VÍTOR LOURENÇO E JOSÉ MANUEL BELCHIOR 01 JUNHO > JULHO 30 JUNE > JULY Os dois colecionadores apresentam aquilo que dispõem de mais relevante, deixando em aberto muito do que há sobre São Brás de Alportel, das suas gentes e memórias, um filão infindável, em parte explorando, em grande parte, talvez, por desvendar. Esta exposição apresenta fragmentos que fazem sentido na interpretação e conhecimento do presente que, por sua vez, será história no futuro. Perpetuar parte do puzzle destas memórias foi intenção destes colecionadores, são-brasenses de nascimento, aqui vividos e que alimentam a certeza de que, futuramente, outros cuidarão de algumas preciosidades que o destino e a curiosidade trouxeram à sua guarda. Here, the two collectors present their most significant pieces, leaving much of what there is about São Brás de Alportel, its people and its memories open, a never-ending source, partly explored and, perhaps, mostly still to be revealed. This exhibition presents fragments that make sense in the interpretation and knowledge of the present, which, in turn, will be history in the future. Perpetuating part of the puzzle of these memories is the aim of these collectors who were born and bred here in São Brás and who nurture the certainty that, in the future, others will take care of the some of the treasures that are in their safekeeping through fate and curiosity. 10

01 AGOSTO 31 AUGUST Esta exposição coletiva de cerâmica contemporânea de autor pretende divulgar a cerâmica artística contemporânea, dando a conhecer que uma cerâmica com preocupações de ordem ética, estética, cultural, didática e a pluralidade no campo da criação. As obras expostas pretendem contribuir, para o entendimento da “cerâmica de autor” e promover a cerâmica contemporânea, com a presença de artistas nacionais e internacionais, desenvolver laços entre criadores e público. The aim of this group exhibition of contemporary signature ceramics is to draw attention to contemporary artistic ceramics, and to let people see work that is done with concern for ethics, aesthetics, culture, didactics and plurality in the field of creativity. The works on display are intended to help visitors understand the concept of “signature ceramics”, promote contemporary ceramics and, thanks to the presence of Portuguese and international artists, forge bonds between the creators and the public.

BEN HELMINK, GUIDA VAZ, ELSA REVEZ e ALBERTO COUDEL 02 SETEMBRO 30 SEPTEMBER Nesta exposição coletiva podemos conhecer trabalhos de Ben Helmink, Guida Vaz, Elsa Revez e de Alberto Coudel. Ben Helmink apresenta-nos trabalhos de pinturas a óleo, acrílico com areia e xisto. Guida Vaz expõe as suas pinturas a óleo, bem como Elsa Revez, que para além das pinturas a óleo apresenta obras em acrílico. A escultura também está presente nesta exposição através das mãos de Alberto Coudel, que utiliza materiais naturais para desenvolver os seus trabalhos. ART mo SPHERE é uma inspiração do pintor William Turner, paisagens com uma atmosfera do tempo. This group exhibition lets us discover works by Ben Helmink, Guida Vaz, Elsa Revez and Alberto Coudel. Ben Helmink's works include oil paintings, acrylic with sand and schist. Guida Vaz exhibits her oil paintings, as does Elsa Revez, who also has works on acrylic on display. There are sculptures on display too; they are the work of Alberto Coudel, who uses natural materials to create his pieces. Featuring works with an atmosphere of time, ART mo SPHERE is inspired by the painter William Turner. 12

ANA MARTINS E JOÃO CUSTÓDIO 02 OUTUBRO 15 OCTOBER Uma exposição que nasceu de troncos de árvores cortadas na limpeza de terrenos e de tábuas encontradas à beira-mar e de barcos velhos, móveis antigos, portas e até de janelas ganharam nova vida e são apresentados nesta exposição de trabalhos de Ana Martins e João Custódio. Dos troncos surgem esculturas e de tábuas surgem pinturas. Ana Martins, natural do Algarve, autodidata, tem como inspiração a Ria formosa e o Burro, sempre presente nas suas exposições, enquanto João Custódio, também algarvio, cresceu ao lado do avô, Calafate de profissão. Brincou com as suas ferramentas em pedaços de madeira. Experiências presentes nos trabalhos agora patentes em São Brás de Alportel. An exhibition of works made from the trunks of trees cut down during land-clearing operations and from bits of wood found on the seashore and from old boats, old furniture, doors and even windows. All are given new life and are presented in this exhibition of work by Ana Martins and João Custódio. The trunks are carved to make sculptures and the bits of wood are used to make paintings. Ana Martins, a self-taught artist from the Algarve, takes her inspiration from the Ria Formosa and from donkeys, both of which always feature in her exhibitions. João Custódio, also from the Algarve, grew up alongside his grandfather, a caulker by profession. As a child, he would play with his tools on pieces of wood. Experiences that are in evidence in the works he now exhibits here in São Brás de Alportel. 13

YVONNE ROTGANS 17 OUTUBRO 31 OCTOBER Nascida na Holanda e residente no Algarve desde 2001, Yvonne Rotgans tem participado em numerosas exposições de arte, em locais variados como cafés, galerias e museus. A sua arte, um cruzamento entre pintura e colagem, gira em torno do conceito de detalhes … aqueles debaixo da superfície ou escondidos à vista desarmada. Isso é conseguido sobrepondo fundos com animais, pessoas e elementos do fantástico, com o objetivo de criar um sentimento de felicidade. "Eu amo pintar seres vivos, pessoas, animais. Todos os dias estamos rodeados de beleza, mas para vê-la precisamos de prestar atenção. Eu gosto de colocar imagens realísticas em cenários imaginários para estimular a imaginação do espetador". "A minha inspiração é tirada de elementos culturais da Holanda, das Caraíbas e de Portugal". Dutch by birth and an Algarve resident since 2001, Yvonne Rotgans has participated in numerous art exhibitions in such varied venues as cafés, galleries and museums. Her art, a cross between painting and collage, focuses on the concept of details... those below the surface or hidden from the naked eye. She does this by overlaying backgrounds with animals, peoples and fantasy elements, with the aim of creating a sentiment of happiness. “I love painting living beings, people, animals. Every day, we are surrounded by beauty, but to see it we need to pay attention. I like placing realistic images in imaginary scenarios to stimulate the spectator's imagination”. “My inspiration comes from cultural elements from the Netherlands, the Caribbean and Portugal”. 14

03 DEZEMBRO 31 DECEMBER Esta exposição de escultura de utentes da Associação de Saúde Mental do Algarve (ASMAL) remete-nos para o património cultural do Algarve, através da recriação em escultura de lendas do Algarve. O público é convidado a apreciar esculturas feitas a partir de materiais improváveis, reutilizáveis ou reciclados. A exposição Magia das Origens é composta por esculturas de dimensões variadas alusivas a lendas algarvias, tais como a Lenda de Cacela Velha (Vila Real de Santo António) a Lenda do Carvoeiro (Lagoa), a Lenda das Amendoeiras, a Lenda da Moura Floripes (Olhão) e a Lenda da Senhora dos Mártires (Castro Marim). This exhibition of sculptures by the members of the Algarve Mental Health Association (ASMAL) focuses on the Algarve's cultural heritage through the sculptural recreation of the region's legends. The public are invited to admire sculptures made from unlikely, reusable or recycled materials. The Magic of Origins exhibition comprises of sculptures of various sizes relating to Algarve legends, for instance the Legend of Cacela Velha (Vila Real de Santo António); the Legend of Carvoeiro (Lagoa); the Legend of the Almond Trees and the Legend the Moor Floripes (Olhão); and the Legend of the Lady of Martyrs (Castro Marim).

17 JANEIRO > MARÇO 31 JANUARY > MARCH Francisco Eugénio representa a quarta geração de uma família de oleiros. Desde pequeno, sempre de olho no trabalho do pai, Francisco com a sua perseverança, errou vezes sem conta, até conseguir. Sozinho, soube acompanhar os tempos. Elevou a Olaria, inovando-a, sem cortar as raízes tradicionais e funcionais do passado, lança perspetivas estéticas sobre o futuro. Fez do Oficio a sua profissão, como uma ponte entre o passado e o futuro. Francisco relembra sempre as manilhas e enfusas de outrora, sem nunca se negar a novas propostas funcionais e estéticas de designers, com quem trabalha em parceria, encarando-as sempre como novos desafios. Francisco Eugénio is the fourth generation of a family of potters. As a young child, and always with his eye on his father, Francisco would persevere, working through his many mistakes, until finally succeeding. Working alone, he has been able to keep up with the times. He has enhanced the Olaria (potter's workshop), injecting innovation but without cutting off the traditional and functional roots of the past, and has set aesthetic sights on the future. He has made the craft his profession, like a bridge between past and future. Francisco always remembers the elbow pipes and water jugs of yesteryear but never turns down the new functional and aesthetic proposals brought to him by the designers with whom he works in partnership. A editora de vídeo, Cecília Santos é natural da Argentina mas tem na decoração e na reciclagem de móveis a sua grande paixão. A marca Core d'core nasceu há um ano fruto desse interesse. Podemos encontrar os trabalhos de Cecília Santos no seu ateliê, instalado no Sítio do Alportel. Nesta exposição podemos encontrar diferentes itens de decoração encantadores e móveis de madeira feitos a mão. Video editor Cecília Santos comes from Argentina and her great passion lies in decorating and in recycling furniture. A year ago, this interest gave rise to the brand Core d'core. Cecília's work can be viewed at her atelier, in Sítio de Alportel. The exhibition features various delightful decorative pieces and hand-made wooden furniture.

Instalações interactivas de Boris Chimp 504 Arte Digital O Museu ZerO apresenta instalações interativas do artista algarvio Miguel Neto dentro do projeto Boris Chimp 504 (que partilha com Rodrigo Carvalho), que nos levam a viajar pelo espaço e territórios de vivência quotidiana. Minimal Republics of Ruben Martin de Lucas Photography For the first time in southern Portugal, the Zer0 Museum is exhibiting digital photographs by the promising young Spanish artist, under the cycle “The map and the territory”, which leads us to reflect on the concept of territories, peoples and borders, and on the precariousness and meaning of their existence. Interactive Installations of Boris Chimp 504 Digital Art The ZerO Museum presents interactive installations of the Algarve artist Miguel Neto from the Project Boris Chimp 504 (shared with Rodrigo Carvalho), that lead us to travel through space and territories of everyday experiences. 20

ANTÓNIO LUZ E JOSÉ VENCESLAU 02 OUTUBRO > DEZEMBRO 31 OCTOBER > DECTEMBER Natural de São Brás de Alportel, António Luz começou a sua carreira como marceneiro aos 11 anos. Mais tarde, foi empresário na área da carpintaria e móveis de cozinha. A globalização, a concorrência e a crise económica levaram-no em 2008 a reinventar-se dedicandose a criar e produzir manualmente originais trabalhos a partir da cortiça. A valorização da cortiça e do artesanato aliada ao design e à utilidade estão presentes em cada peça. José Venceslau é um artesão profissional autor e criador de brinquedos e profissional em gesso criativo. Nesta exposição apresenta um lote de brinquedos e miniaturas construídos totalmente a partir de madeiras reutilizadas. Peças funcionais e criativas criadas a partir de técnicas ancestrais. Born in São Brás de Alportel, António Luz began his career as a joiner at the tender age of eleven. Later, he had his own carpentry and kitchen furniture business. The combination of globalisation, competition and the economic crisis led him to rethink his professional life in 2008 and he began making original handcrafted items from cork. The excellence of the cork and the craftsmanship combines with attractive design and functionality in each piece. José Venceslau is a professional artisan who designs and creates toys, and a professional in the art of decorative plasterwork. This exhibition features a series of toys and miniatures made entirely of recycled wood. Functional and creative pieces made using ancient techniques. 21

A empresa são-brasense “Terracota do Algarve” apresenta nesta exposição o processo de fabrico de produtos tradicionais do Algarve em terracota, nomeadamente o Ladrilho de Santa Catarina, o Tijolo Burro, a Telha Santa Catarina e outros pavimentos e revestimentos em terracota manual. Da extração da argila à preparação da pasta, da crivagem da cinza à modelagem da terracota até à secagem e a preparação para a cozedura e o desenfornar dos produtos, são muitos os processos que ficará a conhecer nesta exposição. “Terracota do Algarve”, a company from São Brás, presents its traditional manufacturing processes in this exhibition, showing visitors how various traditional earthenware products from the Algarve are made, including various types of tiles and bricks, as well as other handcrafted earthenware floor coverings and coatings. From the extraction of the clay and the preparation of the paste, to the sifting of the ashes and the shaping of the terracotta, as well as drying, preparing for firing and removing the pieces from kiln, there are many different processes to learn about at this exhibition.

Natural de Faro, José Moreno nasceu em 1950. Começou a trabalhar o ferro com apenas 14 anos de idade. A serralharia foi sempre a sua profissão e sua grande paixão. Foi esse amor ao trabalhar do ferro que o fez começar a fazer trabalhos de serralharia artística nos tempos livres, tornando-se no seu grande hobbie. Atualmente, o artesão participa em diversas feiras e já realizou uma exposição no Museu do Traje, onde apresenta os seus trabalhos criativos. Nesta exposição podemos conhecer magníficas peças, fruto da sua imaginação. José Moreno was born in Faro in 1950. He began working with iron when he was just 14 years old. Metalwork has always been his profession and his great passion. It was this love for metalworking that prompted him to make artistic creations in his spare time and it became his favourite hobby. Nowadays he can often be found at fairs and has organised an exhibition at the Costume Museum, where he displays his creative pieces. At this exhibition you can admire a number of his magnificent creations.

FERNANDO GANHÃO 03 AGOSTO > OUTUBRO 31 AUGUST > OCTOBER Nesta que é a primeira exposição de Fernando Ganhão, podemos conhecer a sua arte e os trabalhos produzidos através de raízes e troncos, provenientes de buscas que faz pelo campo, sendo a maioria de oliveira, mas também alfarrobeira, medronheiro azinho e sobro. Natural de Alte, onde vive atualmente, Fernando Ganhão foi para carpinteiro aos 15 anos. Ofício a que se dedicou até 2010, altura em que a crise e a falta de trabalho o fizeram olhar para a natureza como uma alternativa. “Num passeio pelo campo, olhei para uma raiz linda e imaginei dali uma mesa”. Essa peça foi vendida, logo que a concluiu, e decidiu dedicar-se ao artesanato. Atualmente, participa em eventos como a Feira da Serra de São Brás de Alportel, Fatacil, diversas feiras de Loulé e ainda em Cacela Velha. This is Fernando Ganhão's first exhibition and it will let us discover his art and the pieces he crafts from roots and trunks. He forages in the countryside to gather his materials, mostly consisting of olive wood, as well as some carob, strawberry tree, holm oak and cork oak. Born in Alte, where he currently lives, Fernando Ganhão became a carpenter at the age of fifteen. He devoted himself to his trade until 2010, at which time the economic crisis and lack of work led him to look to nature as an alternative. “I was out walking in the countryside and I saw a lovely root and I could see it as a table in my mind's eye”. The piece was sold as soon as he finished it and he decided to become an artisan. These days, he can be found at events such as the Feira da Serra in São Brás de Alportel, Fatacil, and various fairs in Loulé and Cacela Velha. 25
