Cria vidade, arte e novos desafios de cor, ritmo e perspe vas é o que reservam as diversas a vidades e exposições da Galeria Municipal, o Centro de Artes e O cios e o Centro Museológico do Alportel, a todos aqueles que durante o ano de 2017 visitarem estes espaços. A exemplo dos anos transatos, a autarquia continua a valorizar a cultura e a dar oportunidade aos artistas do concelho, da região e de outras procedências que optaram por expor as suas obras em São Brás de Alportel! Esta é também uma forma de contribuir para a riqueza e fortalecimento da identidade da comunidade, para a partilha de novos olhares sobre o mundo e a vida e de desafiar à reflexão e ao exercício de uma cidadania mais criativa. Creativity, art and new challenges in terms of colour, rhythm and perspectives; these are the things that the various activities and exhibitions organised by the Municipal Gallery, the Centre for Arts and Crafts and the Alportel Museum have in store for anyone who plans to visit these facilities in 2017. As in previous years, the local council will continue to enhance and value culture, and to give artists from the municipality, region and even farther afield the opportunity to exhibit their works in São Brás de Alportel. This is also a way of helping to enhance and strengthen the community's sense of identity, fostering the sharing of new perspectives on the world and on life, and challenging reflection and the exercising of more creative citizenship. We are always delighted to receive so many requests to use our spaces as venues for such initiatives and it would be remiss of me not to thank everyone who has chosen our facilities as a platform to share their work. I wish everyone great success in expressing themselves, whether they are directing their attention outwardly or inwardly. Enjoy this opportunity to make art a part of your life! ELSA REVEZ Natural de Vila Nova de Cacela, e atualmente a residir em Almancil, Elsa Revez remete para o seu ambiente familiar, os valores e a simplicidade que definem a sua personalidade e os seus interesses. Por força do destino, um dia sentiu uma imensa vontade de pintar um quadro, algo que não fazia há anos. Reconhece que foi uma experiência libertadora ver a sua mão a deslizar pela tela quase que de forma automática, desenhando as emoções que estava a sentir naquele momento. Originally from Vila Nova de Cacela and currently living in Almancil, Elsa Revez says that her family environment, values and simplicity define her personality and interests. As fate would have it, one day she felt a huge desire to paint a picture, something she had not done for years. She acknowledges that it was a liberating experience to see her hand glide over the canvas almost of its own will, portraying the emotions she was feeling at that precise moment.

JOÃO GOMES João Gomes nasceu no Alentejo mas veio muito cedo para o Algarve, onde reside atualmente. Desde muito cedo sentiu o “apelo das artes”, tendo dedicado a sua vida a cultivar essa paixão, um romance que somou, até aos dias de hoje, mais de trinta anos. Com criatividade quanto baste, não se fica só pela pintura, fazendo incursões na escultura, artesanato e também na escrita. Prova do tempo que dedica às letras está nos quatro livros que o artista publicou. João Gomes was born in the Alentejo but moved to the Algarve, where he now lives, at a very young age. He felt the “appeal of the arts” very early on and has dedicated his life to nurturing this passion – a romance which has so far lasted more than thirty years. His creativity knows no bounds and he has explored not only painting but also sculpting, handicrafts and writing. Indeed, the four books he has published so far bear witness to the time the artist has devoted to the written word.

Faro Friends of Philately Com o objetivo de divulgar e promover a atividade do colecionismo, os Amigos da Filatelia apresentam uma exposição que aborda diferentes conteúdos históricos, quer seja pelas relíquias que se podem observar, peças de colecionismo raras e antiguidades, quer seja pelo alinhamento das coleções apresentadas. Nesta exposição o visitante entra numa viagem onde poderá recordar determinados fatos históricos contados através das coleções filatélicas, de numismática, de postais ou de miniaturas. With the aim of divulging and promoting collecting as an activity, the Friends of Philately are presenting an exhibition that encompasses different historical contents. The exhibition features not only rare collectors' items and antiques but also focuses on the historical alignment of the collections presented. Visitors to the exhibition will find themselves transported on a journey through various historical moments, retold by the collections of stamps, coins, postcards and miniatures.

“SÍRIA :: SYRIA”

Textos de / Texts by ÁLVARO FIGUEIREDO Fotografia de / Photography by PEDRO BARROS A exposição visa dar a conhecer um novo olhar sobre a República Árabe Síria, país de grande diversidade cultural, com uma longa e complexa história milenar e cidades que são Património Mundial, como Damasco e Aleppo, entre outras referências. Por outro lado, a exposição reflete sobre a vida na Síria, presente nas suas gentes e costumes onde a hospitalidade não é apenas uma tradição ancestral mas também um dever sagrado. Álvaro Figueiredo é especialista em Arqueologia do Próximo e Médio Oriente Antigo, e Pedro Barros é arqueólogo. This exhibition aims to give people a new perspective of the Arab Republic of Syria, a country of considerable cultural diversity, with an ancient and complex history and World Heritage cities ,such as Damascus and Aleppo, among other monuments. At the same time, the exhibition reflects on life in Syria, and on the people and customs of this country where hospitality is not merely an ancient tradition but also a sacred duty. Álvaro Figueiredo specialises in Ancient Near- and MiddleEastern Archaeology , and Pedro Barros is an archaeologist. GALERIA MUNICIPAL 9

TELMA VERÍSSIMO No Algarve existe um património natural e cultural em risco. A desertificação do interior algarvio é um problema crescente com causas múltiplas provocadas por alterações ambientais e pela ação humana. A biodiversidade fragiliza-se. O ciclo da água sofre alterações. A agricultura é afetada. O risco de incêndios aumenta. A fuga para o litoral à procura de condições de vida melhores, o envelhecimento da população e o desaparecimento de serviços essenciais nas povoações mais pequenas são fenómenos difíceis de inverter. Um documentário fotográfico sobre o fenómeno da desertificação e despovoamento que afeta o Algarve. Some of the Algarve's natural and cultural heritage is at risk. Desertification and depopulation in the inland areas of the Algarve is a growing problem with many causes including climate change and human factors. The biodiversity is becoming fragile. The cycle of water is changing. Agriculture is being affected. The risk of fires is growing. The outflow of people moving to the coastal areas in search of better living conditions, the ageing of the population and the disappearance of essential services in the smallest villages are phenomena that are difficult to reverse. SANDRA LOBO / RAQUEL LOBO Fotografar é desenhar com luz, “uma luz que nunca se apaga”, e à qual a dupla de fotógrafas gosta de chamar EVERLIGHT. A fotografia foi uma descoberta que cresceu com talento e amor e com o incentivo de amigos, que viriam a ser também os seus primeiros clientes. Com formação em artes e design e adicionando muita imaginação, Raquel e Sandra iniciaram uma aventura no mundo do registo para a eternidade! O seu trabalho é genuíno, retrata pessoas, momentos, emoções, enfim… retrata vidas! Photography is drawing with light, “a light that never goes out”, and which the duo of photographers likes to call EVERLIGHT. Photography was a discovery that grew with talent and love and with the encouragement of friends, who would later become their first customers. With training in art and design, and a generous dose of imagination thrown in, Raquel and Sandra embarked upon an adventure in the world of everlasting memories. Their work is genuine; it portrays people, moments, emotions... put simply, it portrays lives! GALERIA MUNICIPAL 11

MARIA HORTENSE SUSANO HENRIQUE MARTINS SILVA Licenciada em Filologia Românica, Maria Hortense dedicou grande parte da sua vida ao ensino. Foi a mudança para o Algarve, em 1985, que despertou em si a necessidade de se expressar através da arte. Henrique Silva reconhece que as artes plásticas bailavam-lhe na mente, e no ano de 1985 começou a pintar, timidamente, num estilo misterioso, revelando alguma inquietude. Como habitante do barrocal, escolheu as pedras para serem trabalhadas e transformadas em formas que tocam o público. Hoje gosta de trabalhar com o calcário ou o mármore com a mestria que já lhe reconhecemos. A graduate in Romance Philology, Maria Hortense dedicated a large part of her life to teaching. It was when she moved to the Algarve in 1985 that she began to feel the need to express herself through art. Henrique Silva realised that art was lurking in his mind and he began painting in 1985, timidly and in a mysterious style, revealing a certain uneasiness. Living, as he did, in the transitional area known as the barrocal, he chose the stones he would work on and turn into forms that would touch the public. Today, he enjoys working with limestone or marble, with all the mastery we have come to expect of him. 12 GALERIA MUNICIPAL

JANE PAGE / LUCIA MINDER Jane Page pintou durante toda a sua vida que foi trilhada por entre muitos 'ismos' bem conhecidos na História de Arte: Impressionismo, Pontilhismo, Fauvismo, Realismo e Surrealismo. Nesta exposição decidiu utilizar tantos estilos quanto possível para que a exposição ficasse mais interessante para o espectador. Desde a sua juventude que Lucia é fascinada pela argila e desde então, tem-se desafiado a entendê-la, tanto na sua diversidade como nos seus limites. Esta exposição é uma seção transversal do seu trabalho com peças ironicamente amorosas, alegres e ambíguas. Jane Page has been an artist for her whole life and her career has been punctuated with some of the best-known styles in art history: Impressionism, Pointillism, Fauvism, Realism and Surrealism. For this exhibition, she decided to use as many styles as possible to make it all the more interesting for spectators. Lucia has been fascinated by clay from a very early age. Since then, she has challenged herself to understand it, in terms of its diversity but also its limits. This exhibition is a transversal section of their work with ironically loving, cheerful and ambiguous pieces. GALERIA MUNICIPAL 13

MARIA PIRES FERREIRA Maria Pires Ferreira é natural de Alhos-Vedros. Teve formação de Pintura a óleo entre 2008 e 2016 através da St. Petersburg Art School - DinRic. Ao longo dos últimos oito anos tem participado em inúmeras exposições coletivas de pintura em diferentes espaços e galerias. Desde 2014 que a artista faz parte do atelier artístico da Galeria DinRic, sob a orientação da pintora Dinara Dindarova. Maria Pires Ferreira comes from Alhos-Vedros. She studied painting in oils from 2008 to 2016 through the St. Petersburg Art School - DinRic. Over the last eight years she has taken part in numerous group exhibitions of paintings in different spaces and galleries. Since 2014, she has been part of the artistic workshop at the DinRic Gallery under the supervision of artist Dinara Dindarova.

JOKE VAN DER STEEN Joke nasceu na Holanda e dedicou-se à pintura depois de criar seus filhos. Em 2001 tornou-se estudante a tempo parcial numa academia de Arte, nos Países Baixos e, desde então desenvolveu a sua técnica sob a influência de diferentes artistas. Quando se reformou decidiu ocupar o tempo livre a participar em workshops e foi desenvolvendo uma visão realista para um estilo mais abstrato. Com esta exposição o visitante vive a sensação de sonhar nas fantasias do olhar colorido de Joke. Joke is from Holland and she began painting after she raised her children. From 2001 she studied several years part-time at an art school in Holland and since then she developed her technique under the influence of various artists. When she retired, she decided to devote her spare time to participating in workshops and gradually transformed a realist vision into a more abstract style. Visitors to this exhibition will be able to experience the sensation of dreaming in the fantasies created by Joke's colorful outlook.

NATACHA NOWACK e as crianças da Associação Jovens e Natureza and the children from Youth and Nature Associa on A Associação Jovens e Natureza, JNC, sediada em São Brás de Alportel apresenta a sua primeira exposição ao público. As crianças do mundo e da associação JNC apresentam uma exposição fotográfica e de pintura subordinada ao tema "Paz no Mundo". O objetivo será partilhar valores tais como o amor, a paz, a tolerância e o respeito pelas diferenças, através da criatividade dos mais pequenos. Em julho de 2016, a JNC deu às crianças a oportunidade de expressar sentimentos e perspetivas sobre um mundo melhor dando agora a conhecer esses trabalhos ao público. The Youth and Nature Association (JNC), based in São Brás de Alportel, is presenting its first public exhibition. The children of the world and from the JNC association are presenting an exhibition of photography and paintings on the theme of “Peace in the World”. The aim is to share values such as love, peace, tolerance and respect for differences through the little ones' creativity. In July 216, the JNC gave groups of children the opportunity to express their feelings and perspectives about a better world and these are the works which will now be going on display to the public. ANTÓNIO LUZ Desde as peças mais tradicionais à evolução e transformação desta nobre matéria-prima, António Luz é um artesão em plena expansão, que revela mestria nas mãos e no saber. Perspicaz e eterno enamorado pela cortiça, este sãobrasense despertou para a vertente criativa da cortiça há décadas, um processo de metamorfose progressiva que se mantém até aos dias de hoje. Nas suas mãos a cortiça ganha novas formas aliadas a projetos de design arrojados e hoje continua a reinventar as potencialidades e possíveis aplicações deste produto ecológico e sustentável. From the most traditional pieces to the evolution and transformation of this noble raw material, António Luz is a craftsman who is coming increasingly to the fore, revealing his mastery both in his skilful hands and in his knowledge. Perspicacious and with an enduring love for cork, this artist from São Brás became interested in the creative aspect of cork decades ago, a progressive metamorphosis that remains ongoing to this day. In his hands, cork takes on new forms combined with bold, modern design projects that reinvent the potential and possible uses of this ecological and sustainable product. 17 GALERIA MUNICIPAL

ASMAL (Associação de Saúde Mental do Algarve / Algarve Mental Health Associa on ) Esta mostra resulta de uma parceria com o Cerro da Vila Vilamoura World, o Museu Municipal de Faro e o Palácio da Galeria de Tavira e é composta por quadros em tapeçaria, pintura e técnica mista da autoria de pessoas que frequentam o Fórum Sócio Ocupacional de Faro. Os trabalhos apresentados tiveram como fonte de inspiração as peças museológicas e detalhes existentes nos referidos museus e zona histórica envolvente. A ASMAL pretende, com esta mostra, enaltecer as potencialidades das pessoas com doença mental. This exhibition is the result of a project brought about in partnership between the Palácio da Galeria in Tavira, Cerro da Vila - Vilamoura World and Faro Municipal Museum. Items on display include tapestries, paintings and mixed techniques created by people with mental health problems who attend the Fórum Sócio Ocupacional in Faro. Their works were inspired by pieces on display in the various museums mentioned and in the surrounding historical zone. ASMAL hopes to spotlight and praise the potential of people with mental health issues through this exhibition. 18 GALERIA MUNICIPAL

ANA NOBRE Enquadrados no desenquadramento das gentes, os costumes acabam por fazer parte de nós. (...) Neste sentido, “Gentes & Costumes”, vem assim desafiar o nosso “Eu” a questionar-se: Serei eu fruto do costume ou serei eu a sua origem? Serei um sonho ou uma profissão? Quem sou eu e o que realmente me toca a alma? As cores vivas e a ironia dos traços induzem estas questões de uma forma fácil e divertida deixando que os inconscientes sorrisos despertem uma resposta imediata. Texto de Marta Vieira. No matter how much we feel as outsiders of this society tradition is always a dreat part of us. (...) In this way, "Gentes & Costumes" (People & Traditions), presents itself as a challlenge to our "self" and brings along the questions: Am I the origin of tradition or am I only its creation? Am I a dream or a Job? Who am I and what really touches my soul? Very lightly and having fun, the bright colours and the irony of the lines will drive us to this questions, letting the answers be owned only by the provocated subconscious smiles. SÍLVIA GRANJA O Infinito desde as antigas civilizações que tem a sua importância. Perdurar no tempo e não perspetivar horizontes, geometricamente falando... Aqui a artista procura encontrar pontos de fugas e linhas do horizonte. É este o mote e a razão de expressão que se revelam nesta mostra de trabalhos da arquiteta Sílvia Granja, que reflete e lança o debate sobre um tema tão… infinito. The Infinite has been important ever since the dawn of time. It perdures and knows no geometrical horizons... Here the artist seeks vanishing points and horizon lines. This is the motto and the expressive reason revealed in this exhibition of work by architect Sílvia Granja, an exhibition that reflects and relaunches the debate about a topic which is so... infinite. Exhibition of works using paint on acrylic and infinite mixed techniques.

ANABELA CONCEIÇÃO Maria Brás procura com esta proposta, o encontro com um espaço em que através de alminhas e calvários se revelam a memória, a saudade e a proteção do ente querido. Uma exposição que é ao mesmo tempo, a interpretação ao pequeno património, e em que a invocação e o evocado partilham quase sempre a mesma ausência. Com origens orgulhosamente serranas, mas de vivência citadina, a autora desde sempre aprendeu a olhar ao que é nosso, como lhe dizia o avô paterno. With this exhibition, Maria Brás is seeking an encounter with a space in which memory, longing and the protection of loved ones are revealed through shrines and crosses. An exhibition that is simultaneously an interpretation of small heritage and in which the invocation and the evoked almost always share the same absence. Proud of her upland origins but with the experience of a city-dweller, the artist always learned that she should look at what is ours, as her paternal grandfather used to tell her. RUTE GUERREIRO Nesta nova exposição, entre temas variados, Rute Guerreiro irá explorar em conjunto com as técnicas de óleo e têmpera, a aplicação de folha de ouro e a pintura em ambas as faces da tela. Natural de Lisboa, a artista dedica-se à pintura de forma autodidata desde 1985. Estudou Conservação e Restauro de Pintura de Cavalete em 2001 e procura aplicar os conhecimentos adquiridos às suas peças. Mais tarde desenvolveu alguns conhecimentos técnicos com o pintor Francisco José Santos e, posteriormente, com o pintor Hirondino Pedro Duarte. In this new exhibition, Rute Guerreiro explores a variety of topics including a combination of oil and tempera, the application of gold leaf and painting on both sides of the canvas. Born in Lisbon, the artist has been devoting her time to selftaught painting since 1985. She studied Conservation and Restoration of Easel Painting in 2001 and seeks to apply this knowledge in her work. Later, she gained a range of technical knowledge with artist Francisco José Santos and, subsequently, with artist Hirondino Pedro Duarte.

JÚLIA MARTINS Emigrou ainda jovem para a Austrália onde permaneceu alguns anos, lutando por uma vida melhor. Depois de regressar a Portugal foi motivada pelos seus filhos a aventurar-se no mundo da pintura. Ingressou numa escola, mas foi a sua habilidade e curiosidade de querer saber sempre mais que a lançou nesta área. Em pequena aprendeu a bordar, mais tarde a costurar e, com mais tempo livre, descobriu a pintura. Encontra inspiração nas obras de William Turner e John Constable e nas suas pinturas tenta ser o mais natural e fiel possível ao modelo original. Júlia Martins emigrated to Australia while still young and remained there for several years, striving for a better life. After she returned to Portugal, her children encouraged her to take her first steps in the world of painting. She took lessons at a school but it was her skill and eagerness always to know more that really served as her springboard. As a child, she learned embroidery and later sewing, and with more free time on her hands, she discovered painting. She takes inspiration from the works of William Turner and John Constable and tries to be as natural and faithful to the original model as she can in her paintings.

SOFIA PINTO CORREIA Sofia Pinto Correia faz criação de peças representativas, mediante pesquisas sobre testemunhos da oralidade, das lendas de mouras encantadas portuguesas, da cultura do sagrado, do feminino e da sua representação num contexto estético. Esta mostra reflete o resultado de um projeto que começou em 2014, envolvendo a criação de peças figurativas, representativas das lendas de Mouras Encantadas existentes no território português, no contexto do património cultural imaterial. Nos seus trabalhos a artista cria visualmente a representação física e material do feminino ancestral. Sofia Pinto Correia creates representative pieces based on her research into oral traditions, legends of enchanted and beautiful moors in Portugal, the culture of the sacred, of femininity and their representation in an aesthetic context. This exhibition is the result of a project that began in 2014, involving the creation of figurative pieces, representing the legends of enchanted and beautiful moors found across Portugal, in the context of intangible culture. JOSÉ VENCESLAU Esta exposição apresenta um lote de brinquedos e miniaturas totalmente construídos em madeira. São peças funcionais, criativas, desenvolvidas a partir de técnicas ancestrais usadas pelos nossos antepassados e transportadas para os dias de hoje. Os modelos criados pelo artesão baseiam-se em construções contemporâneas, sendo um produto natural e biodegradável, que tenta combater a utilização do plástico. As madeiras utilizadas são provenientes da reutilização de materiais. José Venceslau é artesão, autor e construtor de brinquedos e profissional de arte em gesso decorativo. This exhibition features a series of toys and miniatures made entirely of wood. They are functional and creative pieces that have been designed using ancient techniques passed down from generation to generation and still used today. The models created by the artisan are based on contemporary constructions and, since they are made from natural, biodegradable materials, they take a stance against the use of plastic. NATACHA NOWACK Natacha Nowack viaja muito pelo mundo e procura reportar as suas viagens de forma original em fotografia para poder, posteriormente passar uma mensagem de Amor a todos. "Amor Portugal" é uma exposição fotográfica que tem como objetivo partilhar imagens de todo o país, com registos efetuados entre o verão 2013 e a primavera de 2017, passando às pessoas uma perspetiva positiva e linda de um lugar ainda bem preservado. Algumas fotografias são ilustradas com pinturas ou poemas de alguns artistas amigos de Natacha. Natacha Nowack travels extensively around the world and tries to report back on her travels through original photography, with the ultimate aim of passing on a message of Love to everyone. “Love Portugal” is an exhibition of photography that aims to share images of the entire country that were taken between summer 2013 and spring 2017. The intention is to give people a positive and beautiful perspective of a place which is still well-preserved. ANA MERCÊS SOTA Artista plástica autodidata, Ana Sota nasceu em Albufeira. Ao longo do seu percurso frequentou vários cursos de gravura, desenho e pintura em Macau, na China, e também em Varese, Itália. Tem realizado diversas exposições individuais e coletivas e integrou alguns grupos de associações de pintores da região da Lombardia, em Itália. A artista gosta do jogo entre o brilhante e o opaco e de utilizar cores fortes. Explora muito o monocromático e gosta de despertar emoções. Tem obras em diversas coleções particulares em diversos países do mundo. Self-taught artist Ana Sota comes from Albufeira. Over the course of her career she has taken various courses in engraving, drawing and painting in Macau, China and the Italian city of Varese. She has staged various individual exhibitions and taken part in a number of group exhibitions. She has been also been involved in various painters' associations in the Italian region of Lombardy. Ana Sota enjoys the play between shine and opaqueness and likes to use vivid colours. She explores the use of single colours extensively and likes to awaken people's emotions. Her works can be found in private collections around the world.
