AUDIENCE,
Ever since it opened its doors, Müpa Budapest has considered establishing ties between European and world culture and that of Hungary to be one of its key tasks. It is always a matter of pride when our performers are able to demonstrate they have a rightful place among the world’s leading artists, and it fills us with joy that this will once again be the case in the new season. Seasoned creators are joined by promising talents, young people who have become or may develop into global stars before our eyes.
The events of recent years have fundamentally reshaped the way we look at the world around us, and it was also inevitable that the role of culture would be transformed: Although the multitude of stimuli we are barraged with provides all manner of competition to our enjoyment of culture, this has simultaneously led to those occasions when we are able to savour quality time together becoming all the more valuable. It is precisely for this reason that, as the country’s leading cultural institution, we believe it to be particularly important to offer our audiences programmes that not only provide an opportunity to unwind, but also enrich them with experiences that replenish the heart and the soul.
We put together the programme for the first half of the 2024/25 season with this guiding principle in
mind: conductors and ensembles will once again be arriving from the vanguard of classical music, the much lauded stars of world music will bring melodies from distant lands, bands from the Hungarian pop scene will conceive productions expressly for the Müpa Budapest stage, and fans of dance and contemporary circus will also have plenty to choose from. We are greatly honoured that the outstanding figures in Hungarian music choose to celebrate their significant anniversaries with us.
In the new season, we will again be drawing attention to the artists of the season, who may perform in different styles but are considered to be among the best, by both fellow musicians and the public. Barnabás Kelemen practically grew up with Müpa Budapest in turning from talented youth to world-famous violinist, while Ferenc Snétberger took to the Müpa stage with his highly characteristic sound from the first moment on. In the months to come, we find ourselves in the fortunate position of being able to meet them both on several occasions. At Müpa Budapest, we have been working from the very start to ensure everyone, regardless of their age and interests, will find something to suit them on our programme calendar, and we hope they will continue to do so in the new season.

This publication was compiled from the entire selection of musical and literary events we have on offer for the first half of the 2024/25 season, along with the concerts of the artists of the season, our dance and contemporary circus productions, film screenings, and family and youth series. Although we have once again decided not to organise our programmes into season ticket subscriptions, we have sorted them according to genres and formations in the same way as before, to ensure everyone can easily find the programmes that appeal to them.

FERENC SNÉTBERGER
From Hungary to the world
Ferenc Snétberger, jazz guitarist, composer and champion of musical talent
It would be hard to heap too much praise on Ferenc Snétberger. This reserved and humble artist is one of Hungary’s most influential jazz musicians. As a guitarist, he belongs in the same company as two other internationally recognised Hungarian virtuosos of the instrument, Attila Zoller and Gábor Szabó. Much like his compatriots, who moved to America, he made a name for himself in the course of a long period abroad, having lived in Berlin since 1988. Born into a musical Sinti Roma family in Salgótarján in 1957, Snétberger is set apart from his fellow artists on one hand by an outlook that goes beyond the horizons of jazz, and on the other by a sense of social responsibility that is reflected in his eclectic music.
Upon completion of his studies at the Béla Bartók Conservatory, Ferenc Snétberger first established himself as part of Trio Stendhal with saxophonist László Dés and percussionist Kornél Horváth, before continuing his international career as a jazz guitarist in the bands of Markus Stockhausen, James Moody and Bobby McFerrin, among others. In addition to his free improvisations, his classical compositions are also considered to be of great worth, such as In Memory of My People a three-movement guitar concerto written to mark the 50th anniversary of the Holocaust.
In parallel to his own career, he always supported young artists. In 2011, he founded the Snétberger Music Talent Centre close to Lake Balaton in Felsőörs, where talented children from underprivileged backgrounds can learn classical music, new music or jazz free of charge for four years.
Ferenc Snétberger has received multiple accolades for his contributions to art and society, including the Liszt Award, the Kossuth Prize and, in 2020, the German Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

BARNABÁS KELEMEN
I don’t even remember how long I have known Barnabás Kelemen for. It must be decades. I have always been astonished by the fire emanating from his violin, that he is not afraid to take risks and that he can channel his entire being into music. It was at the Liszt Academy that I was first able to teach him and his wife, Kati Kokas, and one of my dearest memories of recent years was the opportunity to work on the Bartók string quartets with their wonderful four-piece ensemble. I am grateful to them for these hours spent together. Barnabás appears to be the soloist type, but he is a born chamber musician who knows full well that making music is not defined by four

On the second weekend of November, in the Festival Theatre, we will once again get the chance to meet Europe’s ‘rising stars’, representing the kind of novelty – in this case including young, talented and boldly experimental performing artists bringing imaginative and engagingly compiled programmes – that the receptive Müpa Budapest audience have grown accustomed to. This series launched by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) presents the stars of the not-so-distant future – this year a French/Dutch violist, a Portuguese clarinettist, a British trumpeter, a French string quartet, a Luxembourgish cellist and an Austrian pianist – for whom renowned female composers have created new musical works, four of which will be receiving their world premieres here at Müpa Budapest.

BRIDGING EUROPE 2024 BUDAPEST– BRUSSELS
“European culture has always drawn strength from the mutual influences of the peoples that live and create together here. For our culture to be reborn on the basis of these traditions requires us to pursue dialogue and to meet with each other. This is what the Bridging Europe festival is all about.”
(Csaba Káel)
“When we took on membership of the European family, we decided to be part of a single community. This is not a forum for selfish nations to bicker and haggle with one another, but a family of nations based on mutual respect and love. We must do something to ensure this!” (Iván Fischer)
The joint festival of Müpa Budapest and the Budapest Festival Orchestra always lends an exciting flavour to the start of the new season: besides classical concerts, it also features jazz, pop and world music, as well as film screenings. At the centre of each instalment over the years of this event series launched in 2013 has been a country or group of countries with a rich and diverse culture and significant musical traditions – as a country’s music says a great deal about its inhabitants. In 2021, the concept behind the festival was changed: although the focus remains on Europe, within this context we now partner each year with another city known as a bastion of culture. There is a symbolic reason why the choice fell on the Belgian capital this year: Hungary is slated to take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Belgium this summer, so we are building a bridge between Budapest and Brussels at the September festival, offering several productions in both Budapest and Brussels that feature major artists from both cities joining forces.

Gift vouchers are valid for at least six months and may only be used to purchase tickets for Müpa Budapest’s own productions and within the time limit indicated on them.
DYNAMIC PRICING
Dynamic pricing allows ticket prices to change according to supply and demand. Therefore, while prices might rise within a specified limit for some performances, you will also be able to purchase tickets for other productions at a lower price. Prices vary between the minimum and maximum values published on the website and in print based on a set algorithm.

In the case of our programmes taking place in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall that are interrupted by an intermission, you can order and pay for the refreshments at a separate cashier desk that opens one hour before the performances.
